building project that is expected to generate millions of rands, many job opportunities and breathe new life into the Port Elizabeth suburb of Fairview, will open its light industrial hub soon. The Fairview Business Park, developed by the Fairview Property Company, recently completed construction of a 12.5 hectare development, which comprises 40 light industrial properties and one commercial property. “About ten plots were sold in the first phase,” said John Mowbray, chairman of the property company. “It can be used for office buildings, light industry, shops and warehouses.” Mowbray said the Port Elizabeth business community has reacted positively to the development, with many businesses already having snapped up property here. “However, none of the buyers have started with construction on their new properties. The project will be completed in phases, which will take years.” In the next phases another 36 hectares will be used for commercial and housing projects. The latter will include about 700 plots for housing, Mow-

bray added. Before this phase, they’ll have to complete the roadworks around the business park. “We did a traffic impact assessment. Arising out of the assessment, we are working on considerable improvements along Circular Drive and Willow Road,” said Mowbray. “These roadworks will be completed by the end of August.” The development has already cost R50 million, but it will bring a series of benefits to the residents of Fairview, said Mowbray. “Our development has improved the roads and is going to lead to job creation, both in the building phase and through people being employed in the businesses that occupy the land. It will also result in an increase of rates flowing back to the metro.” Even the residents who returned to Fairview after they were removed from the neighbourhood during Apartheid will benefit from the development. “Our land does not form part of the restitution land, but our development will go a long way in providing potential employment opportunities for people who have moved back to Fairview. ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL MOTORISTS using the busy Luneville Road in Lorraine can in the near future enjoy a safer route owing to a bus embayment being erected in Luneville Avenue, directly across Bordeaux Avenue. Ward 8 DA Councillor Gustav Rautenbach says this intersection has proven to be a popular stop for buses and taxis, but the fact that there was no official stop has caused major traffic problems. “There was no place for a bus or taxi to pull off the street and park for commuters to get on and off, so they stopped in the busy street - causing traffic to come to a standstill. This was also very dangerous for the large number of scholars and domestic workers who use this as an assembly point to wait for buses and taxis.” Work on the bus embayment started last week and should be completed within four weeks. “Not only will this embayment ensure the safety of motorists and commuters but the project has also created jobs for four people,” said Rautenbach. “All four of the workers are from within the community, and two are women. We always aim to employ people from the community in projects such as these. It is also very important to me to empower women.” The estimated cost of the construction of the bus bay is R120 000.

Runners finish comrades to help toddler walk CANDICE BEZUIDENHOUT THANKS to three very brave Samaritans who completed the Comrades Marathon the past weekend and managed to raise about R13 000 as a result, little Gracen Wallace from Lorrainemight be able to walk one of these days. “Gracey”, as she is lovingly called by her parents, is the only person in South Africa and one of only 15 people in the world who suffer from the very rare Chromosome17p13.3 syndrome. At first glance, it is hard to believe that the energetic two-year-old girl with the wide blue eyes can neither walk nor talk. However, when you look closely and see the braces clamped around her tiny legs and listen to her making whimpering baby sounds, you start to realise that she is indeed very sick. Chromosome17p13.3 is a syndrome in which there is an extra chromosome on chromosome 17. It affects a person’s brain and muscles and leads to very slow development. “At the moment her brain is like that of a sixmonth old baby, instead of a toddler who turns three in just four months,” says Leandri Wallace, Gracen’s mother. “The doctors told us that her brain waves are slower and since the syndrome also affects her muscles, she cannot walk or crawl and has regular seizures. She recently had to be rushed to hospital on a ventilator because the seizures had cut off all

her oxygen,” she added. Gracen also struggles to eat and sleep. “She does not sleep at all during the day. There are times when you can see that she is very tired, but it’s not possible for her to just fall asleep.” When Gracen was diagnosed just after birth, her parents had a difficult time accepting the diagnosis. “It hit us really hard. But even though our situation is very challenging, we have learned to accept it,” says Brent Wallace, Gracen’s father. “She is all we have and all we know and in spite of her limitations caused by her condition, she loves being outside, listening to music and playing in water,” says her mother. Through her fighting spirit Gracen has also managed to touch the lives of others. A local veterinarian, Dr Hilda Meyer, who is also a family friend, along with two others, Chanelle Rood and Elnastien Kotze, were inspired by Gracen’s story and completed the 89km Comrades Marathon that took place on Sunday to help her parents raise funds. “We are absolutely ecstatic about the outcome of the fundraiser and we are very blessed to now have enough money for a walker. “Hilda decided to help us as she knows the strain that Gracey’s illness is taking on us financially. I recently started working half-days to that I could take care of my daughter,” she added. Before opening the salon, Clark, who has been in hairdressing for 13 years, worked at a marketing company in Port Elizabeth and is also known for organising the Cancer Shavathon, one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. “I always try to stay on top of what’s happening internationally. A NON-PROFIT organisation that wants to empower young people in Port Elizabeth, has launched the Early Bird community project to motivate pupils in the northern suburbs. The Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR) recently launched the programme to raise awareness among families, community members and the Department of Education about the need of early intervention relating to the youth. The organisation chose Bertram Senior Secondary School in the northern suburbs as the first school to benefit from the programme. Life orientation periods were used during this past month to presentment the programme.The youth programme was held last month during the life orientation period at Bertram Senior Secondary School. After the month-long programme a celebration day was held on May 27, to celebrate how far they have come and to receive feedback from the school. As a non-profit organisation, CMR renders a complete social service to all communities in order to empower them socially, emotionally and economically, irrespective of race, age, gender or association. Their expectation is to rebuild and restore the moral values within the community. CMR has been successfully involved in supporting various communities with aid through preventative intervention programmes. Their main focus is to recognise by means of early intervention programmes, the most prevalent prob-

Social worker and member of the CMR, Loretta Adams, said, “As one of the social workers who are responsible for the northern areas, we have started with programmes targeting pupils in all grades. “In order not to disturb the class schedules, we had the programmes during their life orientation periods seeing that its aim is to raise awareness of the current situation in the community. “The programmes have had a positive outcome. Pupils have been informed about the effects as well as the consequences of drug use and gang violence.”

Adams added that part of the content of their recent programme was to inform the youth about the dangers of cigarettes, hookah pipes and other substances that often contain poisons similar to those found in domestic cleaning products, rat and insect poison, nail polish remover, brake fluid, benzene, moth balls and lighter gas. Adams said that they are planning to continue this initiative in the community. “At CMR, we specialise in serving and protecting while offering a professional service to our children and families at risk. We believe in preventative services before the child is exposed to the Children’s Act and moves into the system,” Adams said.

Maar voordat Jessica oor dié moontlikheid begin droom, fokus sy op dié maand lange oefenkamp waaroor “spookstories” in fietsrykringe vertel word. “Die oefenkamp is blykbaar die breekpunt vir meeste jong fietsrymeisies,” sê Jessica. “Ek het gehoor die vlak en intensiteit van oefening wat tydens daardie oefenkamp plaasvind, is amper wreedaardig.” Tog is Jessica “opgewonde” om saam met die bestes ter wêreld bloed te sweet. “Ek weet dit gaan moeilik wees. My afrigter, Gerhard Meyer, het my reeds geestelik daarop voorberei, maar ek is baie opgewonde. “Al wat my nog pla, is gerugte dat Engels nie ’n eerste of tweede taal daar is nie. Maar ek is seker ek sal verstaan wanneer ek op my fiets moet klim en oefen,” het Jessica geskerts. Haar beste tyd op ’n 200 m-baan is 11.12 sekondes. “Nog ver van wat ek my beste wil hê,” sê sy vinnig. Met die hoop om haar bene vir die langer afstande op die baan te versterk, bestee sy minstens

400 km per week op haar fiets. Dit is ook dié toewyding wat haar in Maart ’n silwermedalje op die Suid-Afrikaanse fietsry-kampioenskapsbyeenkoms besorg het. Jessica en Jennifer Abbott van Gauteng is die enigste twee SuidAfrikaanse baanfietsryers wat ’n uitnodiging na die kamp ontvang het. Die kamp word met deelname aan die UCI-kampioenskapsbyeenkoms tussen 20 en 24 Julie afgesluit. “As die keurders van die kamp besluit ek is goed genoeg, sal ek moontlik langer aanbly en ’n plek in die Statebondspele- of Olimpiese Spele-span van 2020 hê,” het Jessica gesê.

FOCUS ON CHILD PROTECTION WEEK: 29 May - 5 June

Uviwe: Champions of children's rights since 1917 REPORTER UVIWE, previously known as PE Child Line, is a registered non-profit (003-620) child protection organisation situated in Port Elizabeth. Their primary focus is the protection of children’s rights and to unlock young people’s full potential to become economically active citizens. According to Candice Botha, who does Marketing and Fundraising Support for Uviwe, they embrace an integrated model that focuses holistically on child protection, victim empowerment, early childhood development and youth development programmes. “Uviwe’s Service pillars are agents of hope; champions of children’s rights; building sustainable partnerships and empowering communities,” said Botha. They protect children through their support programmes and services to child victims of crime such as rape and abuse. The organisation specialises in child abuse crisis management and their criteria are open to children of abuse, neglect and abandonment. Uviwe currently oversees six Early Childhood Development centres in the northern areas, rendering childhood development pro-

grammes to children from 18 months to 5 years old. They have a longstanding track record with assisting Ubuntu (neighbourhood) crèches with capacity building, training on child care and protection. Uviwe has been involved in the training of 306 unregistered, backyard (Ubuntu) crèches. Their training focuses on child protection, domestic violence and family issues. “The organisation’s mission remains building communities fit to raise every one of its children. Our family reunification, foster care services and positive parenting programmes for families and parents of children ensure that the child is protected in their home environment,” said Botha. Child abuse often goes unreported; therefore, the organisation provides the option of remaining anonymous when reporting a case of suspected abuse, in an attempt to encourage people to report child abuse. Uviwe Child and Youth Services rely on funding, donations and sponsorships to continue to render services to vulnerable children in the Metro. Hamilton conquers rain in Monaco GP AS if a race around the confined streets of Monte Carlo isn’t a big enough challenge, the rain that came down made sure that it was emphatically more demanding. Daniel Ricciardo started the Monaco GP from his first career pole position and would’ve felt he had half the job done. As the race got underway behind the safety-car there was no perilous side-by-side running into turn one with Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes or the fear of pushing slightly over the limit into a barrier. When racing did get underway Ricciardo quickly carved out a ten second lead to second placed Rosberg with Hamilton close behind in third. As the circuit started to dry Ricciardo dived into the pitlane for a set of intermediate tyres but the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton stayed out. It was this stint, on the full wet tyre, that won Lewis Hamilton the Monaco Grand Prix. But for Hamilton to take his first victory of the season, a lot of things had to go his way. First championship leader and teammate Nico Rosberg had to move over and let him by and this move revealed some of Rosberg’s character. Regardless of his pace, as the championship leader, there couldn’t have been

an argument against Rosberg if he didn’t move out of the way for his biggest rival. By giving way to Hamilton he showed himself to be a team man. Still victory seemed a long shot away as Ricciardo closed right onto the back of Hamilton on his quicker intermediate tyres. Each driver would have to make one more stop for slick tyres. However, as the Australian dived into the pits for dry tyres, a communication error resulted in the team not beingready for him. A thirteen-second pitstop for Ricciardo meant Hamilton squeezed into the lead of the race. Although demoralized, Ricciardo refused to give up and hounded Hamilton for as long as possible. Nevertheless, the Australian was unable to take back the lead of the race and finished second. Not too far behind Force India’s Sergio Perez drove a stellar race to hold off the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel for third. Ferrari’s Monaco experience was an unforgettable one as Kimi Raikkonen retired early on after touching the barrier in the hairpin and getting stuck on his own front-wing. Fernando Alonso showed his class with a fine fifth place finish for McLaren on their 50th anniversary. The opportunistic Nico Hulkenberg

snatched sixth place from Nico Rosberg into the final corner on the last lap of the race. Rosberg, running with suspected glazed brakes, finished seventh ahead of Carlos Sainz in eighth, Jenson Button in ninth, and the Williams of Felipe Massa in tenth. The race was interrupted by several virtual safety car periods as drivers fell victim to the difficult conditions and notoriously tight circuit. Renault’s Jolyon Palmer crashed in the start/finish straight while Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat took out teammate Kevin Magnussen. Max Verstappen was well on his way to recovering from a pitlane start but stuck his Red Bull into the barrier on lap 34. To add insult to a serious lack of pace Marcus Ericsson attempted a bizarre move on his Sauber teammate Felipe Nasr into the final corner that ended in a double retirement for the team. Some stars had to align for Hamilton’s first win of the 2016 season. But it was his masterfully controlled stint on a drying track with worn wet-weather tyres that sealed the deal. A car as dominant as the 2016 Mercedes often disguises a driver’s skill. But on this day not even this could overshadow Hamilton’s near impeccable feel and talent for driving an F1 car.

Ford’s Ranger is bagging the awards FORD released its new Ranger at the end of last year, just a few months before the February launch of one of its biggest competitors, the Toyota Hilux. And the competition is stiff, with the Ranger bagging many prestige local awards in recent months,while the Hilux topped the sales in March and April. Ford’s Ranger and Everest were recently announced as winners in the 2016 Drive Out/WegRy 4x4 of the Year Awards. In these awards the New Ford Ranger was announced Double Cab of the Year with the all-new Ford Everest taking top award for the SUV segment. This follows close on the heels of the Ranger being named one of Car Magazine’s Best Buys for 2016 winning the best double cab bakkie title for a fifth year in a row. The generous size of the Ranger’s cabin, high specification level, refinement and ride comfort, as well as the rugged looks and performance, were all praised by the Car editorial team. To realise how popular double cabs have become as a family vehicle, you just have to go on any school run, rugby or festival day and see how many double cabs are parked there in the middle of the concrete jungle. They’re used on the school run, office run, for holidays and have become the family car for many. And to accommodate those who like to drive a bakkie, without feeling that they are driving a bakkie, the new Ranger is laden with comfort and convenience features, not to mention the fact that the test model had an automatic transmission – making up for what I believe the worst thing about driving a bakkie is – changing those gears. And then there is the rear camera – which (in my opinion) should be compulsory for all bakkies used on the school run. The refreshed line-up of Rangers, which have been available in SA since November last year, comprises 33 models including Single Cab, Super Cab, Double Cab and Wildtrak. The new Ranger is produced at Ford’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria and exported to 148 markets in Africa and Europe. model was the double cab variety. Ford have given the new Ranger a bolder, more modern look. It has a strong new trapezoidal grille, which connects seamlessly with the chiselled projector headlamps. For those who like to drive on the wildside the Ranger has 800mm water wading depth and 230mm of ground clearance. Interior With the interior Ford has gone to a lot of trouble with high tech features to give it a carlike feel. These include the Ford Sync 2 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen (on the higher spec models). SYNC®2, the latest generation of Ford’s incar connectivity system, is standard on the new Ranger XLT and Wildtrak models. Using natural voice commands, the driver can control the car’s climate controls, entertainment system and phone functions. The new Ranger also features a 240-volt power socket that can be used to power your laptop or cellphone. The Ranger line-up features Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and ABS as standard features on all but the Base model (where ABS is an option). In addition, the top-specification new Ranger Wildtrak offers a wide range of first-in-class driver aids including Lane Keeping Alert and Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Driver Impairment Monitor, as well as Front and Rear Park Assist. The Wildtrak can be specified in 3.2 TDCi 4x2 manual or automatic, or the range-topping 4x4 Automatic. Engine The Ranger range is powered by the latestgeneration Duratorq TDCi engine and Duratec petrol engine. Ford engineers fine-tuned the suspension of the new version for additional comfort and better handling. One of the other ways of taking the bakkie out of a bakkie for the way it is used these days, the Ranger has an electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system. This allows for light and manageable steering for low-speed manoeuvring – very useful in shopping centre parking lots and tight spaces on the school run – while out on the open road and at higher speed the

EPAS ensures precise steering. Ford’s 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi five-cylinder diesel engine tops the range. According to Ford, the upgrades include a new exhaust gas recirculation system that helps improve fuel efficiency by up to 18 percent, while still producing 147kW of power and 470Nm of torque. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder Duratorq TDCi has also been upgraded for better performance and efficiency. The peak outputs of the high-power derivative climb from 110kW on the previous model, to 118kW while torque is boosted by 10Nm to 385Nm. An economical mid-power 2.2 Duratorq TDCi engine is also available in certain models, producing 88kW and 285Nm. The new Ranger is also available with Ford’s 2.5-litre Duratec petrol engine, providing 122kW of power and 226Nm of torque. Depending on model derivative, the new Ranger is equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, or a five-speed manual on the mid-output diesel and petrol versions.

The prices for the New Ranger double cabs range from R290 900 to R597 900. The vehicle test driven was the 3.2 TDCi XLT 4X4 Automatic which retails for R567 900. Will I buy one if I could afford it? I still prefer SUV’s - so I would rather go for the 7-seater Ford Everest - which is the

Extreme Festival at Aldo Scribante Circuit ALDO Scribante Race Circuit will once again be holding the annual Extreme Festival on Saturday, June 4. The festival will feature the Engen VW Cup, Red Square Kawasaki ZX10, V8 Masters, Super Cars, PSP, 600, Unlimited, Historic Bikes and the Regional Modifieds. Local motorcycle riders and the regional saloon drivers will be keen to share the track with the national racers. Round 3 of the Engen VW Cup will feature current overall leader and also leader in the juniors, Keagan Masters, Christopher Shorter, sponsored by Payen, in second place and the current leader in the Masters and third in the championship, Trevor Bland. The Pepper racing team of Shaun La Reservee, Brad Beningfield and Daniel Duminy will also be looking for good results after their good form at Killarney. The Red Square Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup are celebrating their tenth year and will have

Class A, B and C competing. Super Cars consisting of three classes of gold, silver and bronze will see the likes of Darren Winterboer, Willem van der Westhuizen and Dawie Olivier. On the local scene, the PSP, 600, Unlimited and Historic Bikes as well as the various classes of the Regional Modified Saloons will compete. There will be a kiddies corner as well as vehicle and bike displays and a sound off. Food and refreshments will be on sale. Tickets cost R80 per person and free entry to children 12 and under. Bulk tickets are available at R60 for 10 or more. Gates open at 8.00am and racing starts at 10.00am. The Endurade Winter Series Triathlon offers 7 events each taking place at the same time. These include a Sprint Distance Triathlon (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km Run), Sprint Distance Duathlon (2.5km run, 20km cycle, 5km Run), Mini Duathlon (1.25km,10km cycle, 2.5km), Kids Duathlon (1.25km run, 5km cycle, 1.25km run), 750m Ocean Swim, 5km Fun Run, 1.25km Fun Run for kids.
