Correction: Fairview hub opens An error was made in the article “Fairview hub opens”, published in last week’s PE Express. In the article, the chairman of the Fairview Property Company, John Mowbray, was misquoted as saying ten plots have been sold in the first phase of the project. Several plots have been sold in the first phase, with ten plots still available for sale. PE Express apologises for the error.

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) commemorates World Blood Donor Day on June 14. This is an international day of recognition of blood donors globally. The theme for World Blood Donor Day this year is “Blood connects us all”. In the face of major communicable disease epidemics South Africa has maintained a high degree of blood safety and a reliable supply of blood countrywide. This is largely because it follows key recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) on good blood service management: reliance on unpaid voluntary donors, universal testing of donated blood, and reduction of unnecessary transfusions.
SANBS is yielding positive results across these areas:
•It is one of the 65 countries in the world that gets
100 percent of its blood from voluntary donors who are not remunerated. The WHO has a target that by 2020 all countries will adopt this model. •SANBS works closely with healthcare workers who do transfusions at health facilities to heighten awareness about the correct use of blood thus reducing wastage of this precious resource. •To keep blood safe SANBS tests every single unit of blood collected daily for pathogens that cause HIV, Hepatitis B and C and syphilis which are highly prevalent in the country. South Africa is one of few middle-income countries that run nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) which detects the pathogens responsible for these epidemics by significantly reducing the length of the window period.
This is an investment that has given many accident victims, people suffering from blood-related diseases and mothers in la-
bour, the opportunity to live healthy lives. Today SANBS has over 400 000 donors on its database and the number is growing. “SANBS is also getting younger as we are seeing the proportion of donations from our youth increase. We have invested in taking a targeted approach to donor education and community support that moves beyond the need for blood as medical response but also a unifying act of love and care,” said SANBS communications manager, Vanessa Raju. World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated in Port Elizabeth on June 11 at Baywest Mall, Centre Court in association with Algoa FM. For more info on how to become a blood donor visit www.sanbs.org. – REPORTER

My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Ligan and Miss Jessica looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Ligan and Miss Jessica performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled! Siya Mhlaluka, General Manager of TPT’s Eastern Cape Port Terminals, believes that strong leadership is necessary to maintain the Eastern Cape Terminal’s high productivity standards. “The EC Terminals’ Management Team has complete confidence in the capabilities of the leadership now in place. Thabatha joined TPT in 2009 at NCT as a Planning Technician and she has been instrumental in the start-up and growth of the terminal to date. She has worked in a planning and logistics environment contributing to the performance success of the terminal, in particular with a focus on customer service and operational KPIs. Over five tons of clothing collected for the needy REPORTER WHAT started out as a humble campaign by a local retailer to collect some clothing items for the needy turned into a project of epic proportions, with the total collection of clothing, shoes and blankets tipping the scale at well over the five-ton mark. Rafi Sevilya, owner of Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses, came upon the idea to get the involvement of local schools to aid him in the campaign. The goal was to bring in 1 000kg of clothing. However, the staff at Rafi’s have been bowled over by the support this initiative has received and have watched as quadruple that amount has been delivered to the shop in Cape Road. The incentive presented to the schools was that the one which brought in the most donations would win two Bosch front-load washing machines - one to keep and one to donate to charity. “We had a giant cardboard washing machine especially made for the front of the store to house all the donations,” Sevilya
said. “This was soon too small to accommodate all the donations we received. “Due to the overwhelming success of this project I would like to run it annually.” All clothing has been handed over to the Love Story NPO, which serves the destitute in PE through feeding schemes, clothing distribution and other community upliftment projects. From there the clothing will be distributed to projects such as Human Heart Services in Motherwell, Greenapple Creche in KwaZakhele, Love Story City Feed, Walmer Angels Project, Sinukulwazi in Veeplaas, Sinethemba Creche in Walmer, Likusasa Lomama in KwaDwesi, City Lights Church for the Pop Up Street Store, MES Shelter in Korsten, Bet Sheekoom, Kleinskool Initiative and Ou Apostoliese Kerk. The schools involved in the clothing collection were Alexander Road High, Westering Primary, Herbert Hurd Primary, Theodor Herzl Primary/High, DF Malherbe High, Greenwood Primary, Newton Park Primary, Grey Junior, Clarendon Park and Collegiate High School.

In 2011 Jason was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in his right femur. The tumour was 17cm long. He was rushed to Cape Town for a biopsy and to have limb salvage surgery by a specialist orthopaedic surgeon. This was followed by months of chemotherapy and a number of blood transfusions and platelets and blood tests. “Over the following four years we had to constantly fly to Cape Town for checkups, which often resulted in necessary surgery. Jason had to have 15 surgeries over this period. He had to have many MRI’s, CT scans, x-rays and blood tests over this period between PE and Cape Town,” said Jason’s mother, Jenny. After being in remission for four years, Jason relapsed. The cancer had returned in both his right ankle and left shoulder. Both had to be replaced in Cape Town. “After these surgeries, Jason tried to live a normal life.

After a month, during another scan, they found the cancer had returned in both his left hip and right knee. Jason had to have more replacements. His femur had already had plates, screws and implants to keep the thin fibula from breaking and to grow onto the remaining bone – this had to be replaced again, due to the tumour being behind the titanium in his knee.” Jason’s new femur/knee implant had to be custom made, which extended from his knee right up past his femur bone. Again, his femur and knee had to be cut open again. On a further scan, they then found 6 tumours in his lungs. “Medically, there are no more treatments available for Jason, other than a low dose of chemo for maintenance and perhaps a bit of radiation if necessary.” The family’s medical costs are very high and a fundraiser in the form of a Music Trivia is being held to assist them financially. The Music Trivia will be held at the Union Cricket Club, on Friday, June 17 at 6:30pm at R80 per person. For bookings and more info call the event organiser Laurika Roberts on 084 724 1264.

Chapter ending: NMB librarian retires after 44 years SASHIKA PILLAY LONGTIME Nelson Mandela Bay librarian, Mariam Jordaan (65), is retiring after more than four decades of overseeing library services. Jordaan, who currently resides in Parkside, started helping out at the Korsten Library as a temporary library assistant in 1969, shortly after completing her matric. “I wasn’t accepted in the field I wanted to study. While I was at home, a friend asked if I could help at the library because she was unable to. I decided this is what I wanted to do.” Jordaan said that after completing her librarian diploma at the University of Western Cape (UWC), she later studied part time and graduated with a BA degree at NMMU while working as a librarian and raising three children with her husband. “I have worked at the Korsten, West End and Gelvandale libraries and from 2004, I was ap-
pointed as the manager of libraries branch services and stationed at Brister House. “I can’t believe how time has passed. Things have really changed and one needs to be flexible when it comes to a changing work environment. “Being a librarian has been very satisfying, especially at a public library where you get to serve the community. You see the gratitude, how grateful someone is because you have helped them. Working with different age groups can be challenging but I enjoyed my work.” She leaves behind what she described as an “excellent team”, one that will be remembered. “You can never complete your work entirely on your own. It takes teamwork. Don’t underestimate the contribution of others; they all play an important role in our library. I have always had good relationships with those I have worked with,” she said. Jordaan, an avid reader, has read too many books to choose a favourite but she enjoys reading books by South African authors such as
Riana Scheepers and Rayda Jacobs. “What I will miss the most about my work is the stimulation - there is always something happening. I have worked with people all my life and I will miss that. I used to be shy and introverted but through working at the library I have become extroverted.” Jordaan mentioned that although libraries are changing, the community still relies on public libraries. “Libraries have changed over the years but people still make use of them. The resources in libraries were limited back then. We didn’t have a photostat machine or computers. There is more happening now than there was 40 years ago,” she said. “The majority of the community I deal with are disadvantaged. Their homes are small; they need space to study and have group discussions. We also now have Wi-Fi available. I don’t think the internet can replace the use of actual books,” Jordaan said.

Senior citizens share memories The South End Museum recently launched the “Searching for Memories” project aimed at celebrating the Bay’s senior citizens. Various oldage home groups have been invited to the museum. They will be entertained with a breakfast and asked to reveal their experi ence of forced removals, or any other experience of significance through oral history interviews. Last week’s group were senior citizens from the Malabar community (pictured here). The South End Museum Trust plans on having these programmes on an annual basis. The programme will continue until July 14. For more info, contact the museum on 041 582 3325. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Budding filmmaker second in global competition REPORTER
Hassim’s short movie titled “Karma”, was inspired by hearing about situations where a grandfather is rejected by his son and left in an old age home. Thaaqib Adams who also attends Nizamiye Al-Azhar Institute was the scriptwriter. “The short movie is about a father who through the innocence of his son, realises how badly he has been treating his own father,” Hassim said. The short movie was filmed at various places in Port Elizabeth including Al Badr Arabians farm in Sardinia bay, Nizamiye Al-Azhar Institute and the Boardwalk hotel. “I thought the competition would be challenging but it turned out to be easy and enjoyable. The judges were friendly and gave useful advice. Hassim’s short movie can be viewed on YouTube, titled Karma Infomatrix 2016. When Hassim is not behind the camera, he enjoys playing sport, reading, watching movies and editing clips. He added that if provided with the opportunity, he would enter more filming competitions. “I am very grateful for this opportunity given to me by the school, teachers’ support and the support of my friends. This wouldn’t have been as successful without their support and encouragement.” Hassim’s teacher, Fatih Baltan, said the school is very proud of Hassim’s achievement. This is not the first time a pupil from Nizamiye Al-Azhar Institute has taken a top position in a filmmaking competition. Last year, Naeem Ally, who was in grade 11 at the time, achieved third place in the 2015 Infomatrix.

Muhammed Yaseen Moosa Hassim, a Grade 8 pupil from Nizamiye Al-Azhar Institute, represented South Africa in this year’s Infomatrix, an International Informatics Project Competition. The talented 13-year-old, who recently achieved second place in the competition, said the experience has been life-changing and surreal. “It feels surreal. All the other projects were so good, I didn’t know what to expect.” “It has been a wonderful, life-changing experience, one of the best experiences I’ve had.” Hassim added that during the competition process, there were thousands of applicants but only about 300 were selected to compete in the finals. There were also various competition categories including programming, robotics, hardware control, computer art, and short movies. Infomatrix is an annual International Informatics Project Competition with the aim of encouraging young people to apply their imagination, their passion, and their creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world today. This year’s short movie topic was “justice”, where participants had a time limit of three to seven minutes to capture a short movie that highlighted the topic in a unique way. STOP CRYING, STOP WORRYING BECAUSE WITH MAMA SAMANTHA ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
My name is Sanirisiwe 30 yrs old, testifing about the miracles that MAMASAMANTHAperformed in my life. I am one of the people who lost a lot of money to the so called doc-tors but when I read the testimony Larry wrote about MAMA SAMANTHA. I decided to try again called MAMA SAMANTHA and she told me all be fine with me if only I believe in her. My life was a mess, I had a lot of debts, working for 5years with no money that time my boyfriend had left me she used a crystal ball eye and gave me a magic ring which helped me. My boyfriend came back and now I am financially stable, my court cases were dismissed and I live happily now. CAN PAY AFTER JOB IS DONE Cell 063 800 8531 X1RFDNNM-PX080616

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 8 JUNE 2016
EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
Isuzu double cabs tested as mom’s taxis ISUZU launched in the last quarter of last year an enhanced and expanded KB range which includes three new models and an upgraded 250 DTEQ engine – bringing the total number of models in the range to 18. Express on Wheels recently spent time with two of the upgraded and new models: the KB250 LE Double Cab (manual) and KB300 LX Double Cab 4x4 (automatic). The double cabs retail from R344 400 in the KB250 range and from R486 900 in the KB300 range. The new models are the all-new KB300 LX 4x4 Double Cab Automatic, the KB250 Fleetside 4x2 Double Cab and the KB250 Fleetside 4x2 Extended Cab. While the KB250 has been equipped with an upgraded 250DTEQ engine, the KB300 has been enhanced with a new infotainment and navigation system which includes a touchscreen and rear camera – a necessity in my opinion for any bakkie used on a school run. Much is being done by all the bakkie manufacturers to ensure that their vehicles have the practicality a bakkie offers but has a car-like feel and ride – and that is exactly what the top of the range KB300 LX Double Cab 4x4 offers. Not to mention the fact that it is equipped with an automatic transmission that takes away the biggest gripe
I have with bakkies – changing those stubborn gears. While the KB 300 LX 4x4 double cab automatic is a completely new model, the other LX models have all been updated with new comfort and convenience features for the double and extended cab derivatives. These include a touch screen infotainment system with satellite navigation, internet, WiFi, and smartphone integration. The screen acts as the display when browsing, or using the DVD player. It also integrates with the Rear Park Assist reversing camera. Keyless entry with a Start/Stop ignition button is standard on all double cab LX-models while leather is available as an option. The KB 300 is available in manual or auto and in 4x2 or 4x4. The 5-speed automatic transmission on the top of the range KB300, has manual gear control if the driver wants to change gears personally. The 3.0-litre DTEQ turbocharged diesel delivers 130kW and 380Nm. The combined cycle fuel consumption is given as 7.9 litres per 100 km for the 4x4 double cab and extended cab models. The fuel consumption of the single cab 4x2 is given as of 7.7/100 km, with the 4x4 version 8/100 km. KB250 Fleetside Double Cab The Fleetside models are the workhorses in the range to attract business
users. While frills are secondary to these buyers, the new Fleetside models do get useful features such as a radio/CD with Bluetooth enabled sound system for easy phone integration. The KB250 Double Cab is powered by an upgraded, high output version of the 2.5-litre DTEQ common-rail direct injection turbodiesel rated at 100kW and 320Nm. According to Isuzu this upgraded engine has a 20 percent increase in torque at 1 200 rpm and a much wider power band compared to its predecessor. Upgraded safety features All LE, LX models and the two new Fleetside models boast an electronic stability control (ESC). All, but a pair of base specification single cabs, are equipped with ESC. The KB range has a full-house of the safety features not so long ago associated with luxury performance cars. As well as the new stability/traction control pairing, ABS, EBD and EBA are standard on all models with the exception of 2.5 LEED (Low pressure turbo) models. The verdict after test driving it: KB250 LE Double Cab: It very much sounds like a bakkie, and as much as improvements have been done to the interior it still looks
The totally new Isuzu KB 300 LX 4x4 auto double cab. like the workhorse it is. Some of the comfort features I like are the electric windows and controls for the audio system on the steering wheel in the model test driven. The layout of the audio system on the dashboard is simple and easy to operate. Legroom is also good for the passengers in the back. Unfortunately the KB250 only comes in a manual transmission. But I must admit that much has been done to make changing gears in the Isuzu a lot easier on the arms. It offers a solid drive and it wasn’t as “floaty” on the open road as I would have expected. And considering that the test drive was done mostly on the mom’s taxi route scattered with speedhumps and traffic circles and tight parking spaces at the shopping centre, I found the Isuzu dealing in quite a dignified way with the obstacles of the concrete jungle.

I would, however, have liked a rear camera to be available on this model too. KB300 LX 4x4 Double Cab Auto (Price: R563 500) After the practicality-focused KB 250, the KB300’s luxury and comfort features were quite pleasing. It is a diesel bakkie and sounds like a diesel bakkie when the ignition is turned on, but once it gets going the noise levels are impressively low. There is enough room in the back for the kids and their bags and I liked the high seating position, the keyless entry with stop /start button and controls for the audio system on the steering wheel. I did enjoy the automatic gearbox and found the ride and gear shifting smooth – even on the mom’s taxi route with lots of stopping and going, slowing down and speeding up.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Montreal will test Mercedes THE St Lawrence Seaway is transformed this weekend into the seventh round of the 2016 F1 season as it hosts the famed Canadian Grand Prix. Named after one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, the circuit Gilles Villeneuve has a distinct street-like feel thanks to the close proximity of the barriers. Its long straights, with a top speed of 330 kph, make it a highly power sensitive circuit with a heavy focus on braking performance. “The track is quite special as it has a lot of long straights and then slow corners with low grip so we have to find the right balance with our setup. You’re very close to the walls so there is a special feeling to drive there,” says Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. The track surface, rarely used throughout the year, is relatively green but grip ramps up exponentially as the weekend progresses. Coupled with variable weather conditions, which often tend to the cooler end of the spectrum, it makes getting the tyres to their prime operating temperature tricky. In terms of tyre strategy Pirelli has made the soft, supersoft, and ultrasoft compound available. In particular, the Renault and
Haas F1 Team will be worth keeping an eye on as neither pair of drivers has chosen a single set of the red-walled supersoft tyre. Occasionally the lack of proper overtaking opportunity can turn the race in a procession. However, it has delivered several dramatic and memorable races over the years. As if perfectly scripted, the first race in 1978 was won by Gilles Villeneuve in a Ferrari. Throughout the years that followed, Ferrari’s love affair with the Montreal circuit deepened. With seven victories Michael Schumacher holds the record for the most Canadian GP victories while Ferrari and McLaren boast thirteen wins each as constructors. In 2015 Lewis Hamilton led home teammate Nico Rosberg for a Mercedes one-two. However, it wasn’t a straightforward victory for the championship winning team. Twelve months ago sky-high brake temperatures plagued the pair throughout the race and required drastic management. In 2014 the failure of the brake-by-wire system forced Hamilton into retirement and Rosberg on to the defensive, which allowed Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to take his first
Grand Prix win. This year the competition appears a bit closer to the Silver Arrows. In Spain and Monaco, circuits that share several similarities with Canada, Red Bull showed their competitiveness. Add to the fact that the Renault upgrade should come into its own around this track and Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen should be more than a nuisance to Mercedes this weekend. It isn’t just Red Bull snapping at Mercedes’ heels either. Ferrari will be the first to admit that their season hasn’t quite gone to plan. Mistakes and unreliability have cost the Italian team a slew of points in the first few races of 2016 but they’re not letting up any time soon. This weekend Ferrari is expected to run a new rear suspension in the hopes of improving downforce as well as other aerodynamic upgrades. They are also introducing a new Shell fuel and a new turbo, which is expected to yield more hybrid power and improve reliability. Mercedes are far from sitting ducks and will, just like the others, continue to push ahead. But they’re under a bit more pressure than they’re used to.

McGrath wins first winter series THE first round of the inaugural Endurade Winter Series Triathlon took place on Sunday morning in absolutely perfect conditions at Port Elizabeth’s Pollok Beach. With 7 events taking place at the same time and the Something Good beach cleanup, the beachfront was abuzz with activity. Twenty-two-year-old Travis McGrath took full advantage of the flat sea and windless conditions to power to a commanding 2-minute 43 second lead to win the inaugural Winter Triathlon in a time of 1 minute 1 second from 2015 About IT Triathlon Summer Series champion, Keegan Cooke, with Jared Jordan in third place. In the ladies’ race it was an extremely close race between Robyn Furstenburg and Lindie Steyn with Furstenburg winning by just 3 seconds and Candice Steyn being placed third on the morning. Racing in the sprint distance duathlon was equally tight with Ross Helliwell claiming the win in just 1 hour ahead of Louis Dupper and Warren Pavis whilst Neylese Donaldson took the ladies’ duathlon title ahead of Liesel Kilian.
Young 13-year-old Andrew Bosch won the Mini Duathlon ahead of Gordon Swans and Marcelle Meyer, whilst Josh Hufkie, Neal Marais and Reghardt Klinkenburg took the top 3 podium positions in the Boys’ Triathlon with Ania van der Merwe, Jayden Swans and Anabella van Wyk filling the top 3 positions of the podium in the Girls’ Triathlon. Jarryd Cooke won the 750m Ocean Swim from Josh McGrath and Graeme Renard with Mary-Anne Stott winning the ladies’ Ocean Swim from Jill McLellan whilst 9year-old Tristan Marais won the 5km Fun Run. Ryder Swans was second in the 5km Run with Hunter Swans in third place whilst Bella Archibald won the ladies’ 5km Fun Run from Ursula Momberg and Liezel Wait. In the Kids’ 1.25km fun run it was Jayson Archibald who crossed the line first ahead of Daniel Richter and Vaclav Horak whilst Kaitlyn Richter won the little girls’ run from Kayleigh Marais.
