WARD 8 DA Councillor Gustav Rautenbach together with the residents of Kastello Estate Complex have been campaigning since 2006 to have the road in front of the complex in Mirecourt Road, Lorraine, tarred. According to residents, the gravel Mirecourt Road has become a nightmare to use due to the deterioration by wear and tear especially during rainy conditions. The residents of the complex share this road with the PE Riding Club, which is situated opposite the complex. Now, a new road, which extends from Montmedy to the entrance of the complex, is being built parallel to the gravel road. The new road is expected to be complete by
the end of July and the estimated cost is R950 000. “The appointed contractor is Kayelihle Trading and the Municipality’s Road and Stormwater department is overseeing the work. This project has provided work opportunities for two people from the ward,” Rautenbach said. “I also some time ago requested street lights be put up in this road as the area around the complex is extremely dark at night making residents feel unsafe, but have been told by the municipality that street lights could not be put up until the road is done. “The area will require four to five street lights. So now that the road is being built, there cannot be anymore excuses,” said Rautenbach.

Dog owner takes lead in charity walk REPORTER A LOCAL “Paws for a Cause” charity walk has helped raise much needed funds for animal shelters in and around Nelson Mandela Bay. Paws for a Cause in Port Elizabeth was founded by Traci Vink when she noticed the constant need for food and donations for animal societies in the Eastern Cape. Her charity walks take place every three months and all proceeds go to various animal shelters in the Bay. “We average about 50 people and about 120 odd dogs. These walks are for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL), East Cape Horse Care Unit, Port Elizabeth Animal Rescue and Motherwell Pet Movement. These charities are close to my heart,” Vink said. “At my Paws for a Cause walks we have catering, super lucky draws, a professional photographer and ablutions. The venues are not in public places, so folks can enjoy the walk and
dogs can have fun without the public in the way.” Vink added that her next Paws for a Cause walk is in aid of the Port Elizabeth Animal Rescue in August at Fairview Racecourse. The last charity walk for the year is in November and all proceeds will go to the Motherwell Pet Movement. “Rescue Dogs Rule are my monthly small walks and there are about 15 people and about 30 dogs. There is no entry fee like my Paws for a Cause walks but I ask for donations of items animal shelters are in need of. I have had three of these walks so far.” Linda-Louise Swain of the AACL said, “It is always so gratifying when someone approaches you and says they will do a fund-raiser for the AACL. “Traci held the first of the Paws for a Cause walks for 2016 in February. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League was the grateful recipient of 367.5kg of animal food, as well as donations for seven sterilisations performed at a mini-spayathon.
Traci Vink with her three dogs at a Paws for a Cause walk. PHOTO:SUPPLIED “The Animal Anti-Cruelty League would like to thank her and all those who participated for making a difference to those who cannot speak for themselves,” Swain said. Joshua given wings to fly REPORTER
Little Joshua Stuart (5) with mom Carmen and dad Dorian. PHOTO:
OFTEN we have to face challenges and it is tough, but we always learn something from them. Those are the sentiments Carmen Stuart lives by. Her son Joshua (5) was born with Craniosynostosis - a condition in which one or more of the fibrous sutures in an infant skull prematurely fuses by turning into bone (ossification); thereby changing the growth pattern of the skull. Because the skull cannot expand perpendicular to the fused suture, it compensates by growing more in the direction parallel to the closed sutures. Sometimes the resulting growth pattern provides the necessary space for the growing brain, but results in an abnormal head shape and abnormal facial features. “When Joshua was 6 months we had to go to Tygerberg Hospital Cape Town for a medical procedure to open up the closed fibrous sutures. Due to a few mix-ups the travel arrangements made by the hospital were not in place. We had to be in Cape Town on the Monday, and by the Friday we still did not know how we were going to get to Cape Town,” said Carmen. After an unpleasant trip in a taxi to Cape Town, Joshua had a very successful operation. At Tygerberg Hospital Carmen was introduced to the Wings & Wishes organisation who assisted with their transport home. Wings & Wishes is a Port Elizabeth-based non-profit organization dedicated to transporting critically ill children to receive the life-saving

medical treatment. At the age of 3 Joshua had to return to Tygerberg Hospital for a follow-up operation. This time, all the travel arrangements were taken care of by Wings & Wishes. “It was as if a big load was lifted off my shoulders because my husband and I are both unemployed and we had no other means to get our son to Cape Town,” said Carmen. “We are so grateful to Wings & Wishes and their donors. Joshua needs to go for annual check-ups and Wings & Wishes assists with all our travel arrangements,” Dorian, Joshua’s father, said. Ouers van leerlinge in Chatty en omliggende woonbuurte word aangemoedig om hul kinders vir dié projek te registreer. Dr. Veonna Goliath, die projekbestuurder, sê die projek is die geesteskind van ouderling Ben Jacobs. Jacobs is in Februarie vanjaar oorlede.

Valley Market supports the community REPORTER THE organisers of the Valley Market in Port Elizabeth have teamed up with SPAR Eastern Cape to support local entrepreneurs and charities. The popular market, which celebrated its one-year anniversary in May, is held on the first Saturday of every month at the old Tramways building just outside the harbour. Organiser Elaine Watson said the market, which has seen an average of 2 500 visitors and around 50 stalls, was excited to have SPAR EC on board as a sponsor. “I think it’s amazing that SPAR are part-
nering with us to give exposure to local food producers. The whole idea of the market is about being better together.” She said the market promoted the trade of artisanal food and crafts that were unique, locally produced and high quality, and therefore supported local entrepreneurs. “We’re all here doing something really awesome for our city,” said Watson. SPAR EC’s marketing director Abri Swart said they were excited to be part of the community initiative. “We want to support local entrepreneurs and grow our suppliers,” he said. “We hope to find a vendor that we can mentor and grow into possibly becoming one of our list-
ed suppliers.” Swart said the idea would be to assist the entrepreneur in possibly distributing his or her product throughout the region. He noted that the Valley Market also supported a local charity called Love Story, which was founded in 2012 by Watson and her husband to meet the needs of destitute people in PE.
According to Watson, the organisation ran feeding schemes, distributed clothing and worked in hospitals and the market’s gate takings went towards supporting these activities. Swart and Watson encouraged the public to attend the market to engage with their community while enjoying good food for a good cause.

HERBALIST STOP CRYING, STOP WORRYING BECAUSE WITH MAMA SAMANTHA ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
My name is Sanirisiwe 30 yrs old, testifing about the miracles that MAMASAMANTHAperformed in my life. I am one of the people who lost a lot of money to the so called doc-tors but when I read the testimony Larry wrote about MAMA SAMANTHA. I decided to try again called MAMA SAMANTHA and she told me all be fine with me if only I believe in her. My life was a mess, I had a lot of debts, working for 5years with no money that time my boyfriend had left me she used a crystal ball eye and gave me a magic ring which helped me. My boyfriend came back and now I am financially stable, my court cases were dismissed and I live happily now. CAN PAY AFTER JOB IS DONE Cell 063 800 8531 X1RFDNNM-PX080616
A SPECIAL PRAYER OF SUCCESS Before I met this powerful spiritual LADY AMELIA happiness was rare in my family. My life was filled with cheating, sick kids and bad luck. I tried many healers and remedies but all failed. I saw a testimony on local TV about and old couple, LADY AMELIA had united. I paid R200 consultation. She accurately read my fortune and told me my problems and showed me my enemies in water.
She performed a one day special prayer for me.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper will join experienced colleague Zanele Vimbela in the Proteas squad for the three-match SPAR international series in Durban from June 17 to 19. In addition, NMMU’s Melodine Jacobs has been named in the SA U21 squad to face their Welsh counterparts as part of the SPAR Challenge. The U21 sides will play the main curtain-raisers on each day. The 27-year-old Vimbela, also a goalkeeper, made her debut for the Proteas at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Now she and Steyn will form a key element of the Proteas’ defensive strategy against Wales. Steyn, who grew up in Roodepoort in Johannesburg, is a new addition to the NMMU netball community, having only linked up with the varsity this year.
“It was kind of unexpected,” said the visual arts student after learning of her inclusion. “I have worked hard towards it, although this year my motto was just to enjoy my netball, to give it everything I can and to embrace the whole game. “When they announced the team I was very surprised, but now it’s a huge learning curve with Norma Plummer being here.” Plummer underlined her credentials when she coached Australia to World Cup titles in 2007 and 2011. She took over the coaching of the South African team last year, but only had six weeks to prepare them for the World Cup in Sydney. While looking forward to working under her, Steyn paid tribute to Madibaz coach Lana Krige, who has helped her develop her game. “Lana is a fantastic coach. She is a defender coach who has helped me so much and now everything is coming together.” Having been born and bred in Gauteng, Steyn said she was enjoying the change of environment in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“In Pretoria everyone is on their own mission, but here everyone is more chilled. I love the ocean and it’s so amazing to travel to class and to see the ocean right there. “When I’m not studying or playing netball I’m out there surfing.” Ranked fifth in the world, three places higher than Wales, South Africa should have an advantage going into the series. They have not lost in 11 matches against the Welsh, but Vimbela said they would not be taking anything for granted. “Despite the slight difference in the rankings, we know it’s going to be a tough series and we certainly will not be taking them lightly. “We have been working hard and know we will have to be at our best against Wales.” The other new caps in the 14-member squad are shooters Siggie Burger and Renske Stoltz. Proteas captain Maryka Holtzhausen said they were all exciting players. “It is always good to have new faces in the squad and these three have slotted in well. They certainly bring excitement to the team.”

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
Ford’s Everest conquers all types of jungle SMART-looking SUV’s and 4x4s conquering the concrete jungle, climbing the odd pavement here and there when parking is at a premium, instead of kicking up dust and climbing mountains, have become the norm. Ford has, however, recently launched its all-new Everest which has had a comprehensive revamp inside and out. And the Everest is a 4x4 which you can really climb mountains with – should you wish to – in style. It offers the practicality that one would get from its Ranger bakkie origins: enough seats for seven grown-ups – yes grown-ups - and the convenience of Ford’s latest smart technology. While being built on the platform of its bakkie brother, the Everest has been adapted to such an extent that one hardly notices its bakkie origins – both in looks and drive. To make you feel that you are not driving a bakkie, the Everest has its own rear suspension and off-road setup. The model range in South Africa offers one engine and one gearbox (6-speed automatic) with two spec levels – the XLT and the topspec Limited. Both are 4x4’s. The 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel from the Ranger is used, but it has received some efficiency upgrades. Its price could however present a big mountain to climb. The Everest, whose main competitor is the newly upgraded Toyota Fortuner, is priced at R634 900 for the XLT (the model test driven) and R698 900 for the Limited. The new Toyota Fortuner’s 4x4 models are priced between R582 800 and R646 100.
The new look is a total revamp and looks much better than its boxy, bulky predecessor.
Exterior The Everest is based on the chassis of the Ranger bakkie. It is a big vehicle and high. Fortunately it has running boards to help one get in and out.
Features Even the lower spec XLT-model is comprehensively packaged with impressive features, including the innovative new Terrain Management System.
Interior The Everest’s biggest selling point must be the fact that it is a full seven-seater for adults. Two averaged sized adults will have enough leg and headroom in the backrow. Apart from the luxury of space, the Everest also has leather seats and high comfort levels in a stylish package. It is one of the most technologically advanced SUVs on the market. The dashboard is dominated by the modern-looking Ford Sync 2 infotainment system with touchscreen. Comfort features include controls on the steering wheel for the audio/infotainment system. Sync2 recognises voice commands to control the car’s entertainment system, climate control and connected mobile devices. It has an eight-inch touchscreen which is quite easy to navigate – even by those, such as me, who are technologically challenged and leave it up to our children to connect the phones, etc. The interior is cleverly designed for practicality (and keeping all 7 occupants happy) with more than 30 stowage spaces and multiple power outlets. It has standard folding second and thirdrow seating which offers flexible seating and cargo arrangements. In the high-spec Everest Limited, the thirdrow seats feature a power-fold function, a powered tailgate and an optional dual-panel moon roof.
Safety features include seven airbags, driver assist technologies such as an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Roll Stability Control, cruise control, as well as rear park assist with rear view camera. The XLT has 18-inch alloy wheels and running boards as standard. The Limited model has a few extra premium features such as power-fold third row seats and powered tailgate, plus driver aids such as Active Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto High Beam Control, Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist. Active Park Assist on the Everest Limited enables drivers to parallel park hands-free. Also fitted are two USB ports, an SD card slot and Aux input plus a total of four 12V sockets. Exterior enhancements on the Limited model include 20-inch alloy wheels, high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and LED daytime running lights. Ride Both models are powered by the latest-generation 3.2-litre five-cylinder Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel engine which produces 147kW of power matched to 470Nm of torque. Yes, it is big and bulky and it will never handle quite like a car, (as more compact SUV’s do) but Ford has done a lot to remove the bakkie feel from the Everest. Its suspension is one example of this – and one could feel that on the speed humps on my daily commute. It definitely deals better with those than a bakkie does. On the open road is doesn’t feel floaty or sluggish at all. And once I got used to its big dimensions, parking it was actually not so bad. Part of the bakkie feel being taken out of the
The Ford Everest’s new look is a total revamp and looks much better than its boxy and bulky predecessor. PHOTO: SUPPLIED equation is owing to the six-speed automatic transmission. It shifts smoothly and is surprisingly quick to respond when you put foot to the pedal. The transmission features the added benefit of a Sport mode, as well as a Manual mode for improved control. Road noise is also minimal thanks to Ford’s Active Noise Cancellation technology. The 4x4 aspect The Everest offers an intelligent fourwheel drive and an advanced Terrain Management System to help navigate challenging terrain. This system gives drivers four settings – Normal, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand and Rock. This alters the vehicle’s throttle response, transmission, intelligent four-wheel drive system and traction control as the circumstances require. For extreme off-road environments, drivers can manually lock the transfer case in low-range four-wheel drive mode for increased control.

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO
Tense Newlands reverberates with drama IT’S a rare occurrence when you are able to judge six international rugby sides – one after the other – on the same day. It happened last weekend and it said quite a few things about the teams concerned – good, bad and indifferent. The teams in question were: All Blacks 39, Wales 21; England 39, Australia 28; Ireland 26, Springboks 20. New Zealand were always considered too strong for Wales, and so it proved in Auckland. Indeed, on this showing the Welsh on the day were easily the weakest of the six. “I couldn’t have asked for better,” said All Black coach, Steve Hansen. “We’ve got several new youngsters in
now. New captain, new vice-captain.” What must have pleased Hansen most was the manner in which his team performed in spite of the loss of stars of the past: captain Richie McCaw, flyhalf Dan Carter and the centre pairing of Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith. Across the ocean in Australia, England continued to show new coach, Eddie Jones, what they are made of with their first-ever win in Brisbane, taking a 1-0 lead in their three-match series against the Wallabies. The tourists have never scored more points (39-28) against the Wallabies. It was in many ways a commanding per-
formance, which is certain to give the tourists much hope of a clean sweep in the remaining Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. Under coach, Eddie Jones, England have now racked up seven wins in seven Tests. South African fans no doubt were bitterly disappointed in the result against Ireland. Somehow the Springboks never managed to get going at Newlands in Cape Town, a favourite venue, of course, where the South Africans have played some of their finest rugby. At halftime, with the score standing at 13all, one could already sense an air of desperation about the Springboks. Defeat was lurking; things were not going well – and so it proved, the Irish having the better of it, looking the more polished of the two teams. No doubt new coach, Allister Coetzee, will be in for a torrid week of criticism as he prepares his team for the second Test at Jo’burg’s Ellis Park. It was a match full of drama, overflowing with tension – and full marks to the Irish for a well-deserved win. For the Irish it was
a match the players involved will remember for a lifetime. This despite Ireland playing with only 14 men for most of the game when South African born CJ Stander was red-carded for a dangerous tackle on Pat Lambie in the 23rd minute as the flyhalf executed a neat kick ahead. More drama was to follow when Ireland were reduced to just 13 men when outside centre Robbie Henshaw was yellow-carded for a late tackle on – irony of ironies – the Boks replacement flyhalf, Elton Jantjies. Not many of the Springboks produced their best performances. Indeed the home team was guilty of many mistakes and coach Coetzee will be faced with a trying week to set the many errors of Newlands to rights. It was a match of continuous drama. No sooner had one error been set to rights than another would pop up. It was that sort of match. What does Coetzee do next? He surely faces a busy week. Can the Boks bounce back? Why not? What they need more than anything is belief in themselves.

LAST year 2.28 million cases of diabetes were reported in South Africa – it is estimated that between 4 to 6 million people in SA have diabetes and that most of them are unaware that they have the condition. If this statistic does not shock you, maybe this statement will: type 2 diabetes has emerged as the new “paediatric disorder”. The estimated diabetes prevalence in South Africa is now above 8%, yet the country’s health system, geared to treating infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis, is struggling to keep up. There are two types of diabetes, of which type 1 cannot be prevented. It is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Type 2 diabetes means the body is not responding correctly to insulin. This is caused mainly by obesity and being unfit. Type 2 diabetes is now emerging in teenagers and even children under the age of 10. The prevention of type 2 diabetes starts with acknowledging that you are in a high risk group and getting tested annually. Lifestyle and type 2 diabetes are closely linked. To highlight diabetes in our community, the Port Elizabeth branch of Diabetes South Africa will be hosting their annual fundraising and awareness walk on Saturday, July 23, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The 2016 Refreshhh Sugar Free Global Diabetes Walk offers local communities the opportunity to come and get their blood glucose levels tested (free of charge) and join others on an untimed walk around the North End Lake and stadium precinct. The first 500 people to register for the Refreshhh Sugar Free Global Diabetes Walk will each receive a goody bag and t-shirt whilst all finishers will get a 2 litre Refreshhh Sugar Free cooldrink, finishers medal and stand a chance at winning some fantastic lucky draw prizes. Come and step out and be active on July 23 and let’s create awareness to the threat of diabetes and the need for regular testing and a healthy lifestyle which reduces the consumption of sugar, processed and convenience foods. The walk will start at 9am on July 23 with the prize giving taking place at 11am or earlier if the last participants are done. Entries for the Global Diabetes Walk are available at Toby’s Caltex (8th Avenue Walmer), Brian Bands Sports (Newton Park), News Cafe (Boardwalk) or from the Zsports Offices at North End Lake. Discounted entries are offered online on www.zsports.co.za/GlobalWalk. Exhibitors, various testing facilities and food vendors will be available on the morning of the walk.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Mercedes masters Montreal strategy AS the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix developed, Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel found themselves in front of an open goal. But a dubious strategy call saw the Italian team score an own goal instead. From third on the grid Vettel rocketed into the lead of the race leaving the two Mercedes to bang wheels into turn two. Here Nico Rosberg got off worse and dropped down to tenth by the end of the first lap. Vettel looked to have a solid grip on the race and was comfortably holding off the secondplace Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton. But Vettel had committed to a two-stop strategy and dived into the pits on lap eleven. Hamilton continued to lead until he pitted for soft tyres on lap 24. It brought him out in second place and eleven seconds behind Vettel where he simply bided his time with the knowledge that the Ferrari had a second-stop to make. Vettel’s second stop on lap 37 had him rejoining roughly eight seconds behind Hamilton. Despite being able to reduce the gap to about four seconds, Vettel was nailed into second place as Hamilton ran his one-stop strategy to completion. At teams like Mercedes and Ferrari nearly six hundred people attempt to combine the best of their abilities to put two cars onto the track. One of these people has the job of chief race strategist. This is the person who makes the call on when to pit and what tyres to run during a stint. It’s not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination. It’s trying to make the right call under extreme pressure in the fastest sport in the world. But this high-speed game of chess demands absolute precision and anything less is catastrophic. Without some unreliability or a bit of argybargy between its two drivers Mercedes has proven near impossible to beat over the last
two years. So when the opportunity arises to do just that it has to be snapped up. While the circumstances may be different from the opening round of the season in Australia the result in Canada is the same – Ferrari find themselves in the lead of the race and surrender the initiative without rhyme or reason. Although Sebastian Vettel is refusing to blame the team for the strategy, the reality is that Ferrari’s call handed Lewis Hamilton victory on a silver platter. Most galling of all is the fact that Vettel had the pace to beat Hamilton on track. More than 40 seconds behind Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas also made the best of a one-stop strategy to secure third and the ninth podium of his career. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen drove a brilliantly defensive final stint to hold off Nico Rosberg for fourth. The second Merc of Rosberg finished fifth after spinning ahead of the final chicane in an unsuccessful attempt to pass Verstappen. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen took a disappointing sixth place in a race where he was constantly asked to “take it easy” and save fuel. Daniel Ricciardo completed a fairly lacklustre run into seventh ahead of Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg in eighth. Carlos Sainz delivered a stunning drive from 20th on the grid to ninth by the chequered flag. Sergio Perez wrapped up the final point in tenth for Force India. McLaren’s Fernando Alonso ran a 55-lap stint on the soft tyre but ultimately finished eleventh while teammate Jenson Button retired early on with a suspected engine fire. As Formula 1 heads to Azerbaijan for the inaugural race in Baku this weekend, Hamilton dedicated his fifth win in Canada to the great Muhammad Ali. A resurgent Hamilton leaves Montreal nine points behind Nico Rosberg and with a definite and ominous spring in his step.

Bay ready to host prestige polocrosse events REPORTER
sending a Vets team to do battle with a South African Vets line up,” Low Ah Kee said. She added that they are very proud of the brother and sister duo, Shane and Tayla Mansfield, who play for PE and who will represent South Africa in the U/21 division. “It’s a wonderful achievement and they follow in the footsteps of their parents, John and Leigh Mansfield, who achieved Springbok Colours, John being one of the rare few to attain a 10-handicap. “As a club we are working hard to ensure these tournaments will be memorable and successful events. There will be various food vendors attending and wonderful kiddie entertainment, including a jumping castle and pony rides. “Polocrosse is a thrilling sport partnering horse and human. It requires lightning fast reflexes, as well as stamina. It is exhilarating to play, just as exciting to watch and whether an equine enthusiast or not, the skill required from both player and steed is easy to admire. “South Africa is currently Polocrosse World Cup Champions, having successfully defended their 2011 World Cup title last year at the Shongweni Sports Club in Kwa-Zulu Natal. A feat we are all very proud of,” Low Ah Kee said.
PORT Elizabeth will host two auspicious polocrosse events next month as the PE Polocrosse Club in Kragga Kamma Road won the bids to present both the Interprovincial Polocrosse Tournament and an international tournament. The Interprovincial Tournament is first up and will take place from July 1 to 3. The tournament is set to lure top players from five provinces as it is a selection tournament. Any player hoping to take part in an international tournament next year, will have to prove his or her mettle to fulfil the criteria if hoping to be selected. PE Polocrosse member, Nadine Low Ah Kee, said they also hoping to see in action one or two of the only three 10-handicap players who should ensure some fast and furious action. “The international tournament will take place on July 15, 16 and 17. We are incredibly excited about this tournament as the last time PE hosted an international event was in 1993. “Top Australian junior polocrosse players will travel to PE to take on the cream of our SA Junior crop in the U/16 and U/21 age groups. Adding to the action, Zambia will be
