PE, airport, Uitenhage renamed? T

HE Friendly City might have a new name by the end of the year. Applications for the names of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and even Port Elizabeth airport to be changed, have been submitted to the Eastern Cape geographical names committee, Zukile Jodwana, a member of the committee, confirmed. Among the suggestions for new names are Gqeberha for Port Elizabeth, and Garden Town or Qhagqiwa for Uitenhage. The Port Elizabeth

International Airport could also be renamed the Sipho Hashe Airport. These names will, however, not immediately appear on road signs and maps, Jodwana explained. “This is a lengthy process and can take up to six months. “We have received the application, but now we have to hold public meetings in the communities where residents can voice their opinions and air their grievances,” he said.

“Then we must make a recommendation to the national committee, which in turn must submit its recommendations to the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.” This process will only begin after the municipal elections of August 3, Jodwana said. “With the municipal election around the corner, everyone will be occupied with it and we will not stand in the way of that. “The public meetings will be arranged after the election.”

) Gqeberha is the old name for Walmer from which the word Kabega was derived. Uitenhage was formerly known among isiXhosa speaking people as Qhagqiwa and Port Elizabeth as iBhayi and/or Cacadu. Sipho Hashe was one of the PEBCO Three who along with Qaqawuli Godolozi and Champion Galela, were kidnapped at the Port Elizabeth Airport in 1985 by Apartheid-era security police after which they were murdered by them. – ODETTE KEMP

Municipality to take over metro’s Old Age Homes THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will take the metro’s Old Age Homes under its wing and make sure that the city’s elderly are taken care of. This was said by Executive Mayor, Danny Jordaan, while addressing about 500 elderly people at the Feathermakert Hall during a celebration ceremony to mark the official transfer of Old Age Homes to the municipality on Friday. Old Age Homes have in the past been run by Non-Governmental Organisations. When Jordaan took office last year, the poor conditions of the Old Age Homes were one of the issues he raised. He committed to deal with this issue as a priority. Part of this commitment was to transfer these homes to the municipality with the intention of improving their conditions and the well-being of the elderly. Under the municipality’s Human Settlements Directorate renovation work had already started at some of these homes with the assistance of other government departments, NGOs and private sector, specifically the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and the Community Chest.

Among the problems identified during the assessment processes were: leaking roofs, exposed electrical wires, non-functional geysers and inadequate perimeter fencing, blocked drainage facilities and infrastructure problems. The Directorate prioritised the fencing of perimeters and the renovation of the two burnt down units at Adcock Homes. Hygiene and sanitation products have already been delivered to the homes. Four cleaning staff members will be allocated to each and every home to ensure that the facilities are clean at all times. Small toilets will be attached to the units of the elderly, which will prevent them from walking long distances to use the existing semidetached toilet system. Application forms and new lease agreements will be distributed to the residents of the homes, ensuring that the agreement will be kept strictly between the residents and the municipality, when it comes to payment of rental and queries. One of the elderly, Peter Johnson from Elizabeth Stuurman Old Age Homes, said, “I feel very pleased that the Municipality will be taking over

the management of our homes. For years we’ve had conflict with the way things were being run and the tension it has brought amongst residents. I can only wait and hope for the best. I am grateful to Danny Jordaan for his way of dealing with our matters.” Brenda Plaatjies from Bethelsdorp Old Aged Home also expressed her gratitude. “We are looking forward to the new plans and everything the Mayor shared with us today. Recently we had a big burglary at our homes where valuable items were stolen out of a few residents’ units. This was because we had no securities. So we are looking forward to having securities 24/7.” The Executive Mayor promised to visit the Old Age Homes on a regular basis to assess the work that is being done. “This celebration today is not the last day that you see and interact with me. More intimate interaction at your homes where you stay will continue with me and our leadership collective. We will work together to bring back the dignity that you have lost through years of ill treatment and lack of compassion that you have received,” said Jordaan. – REPORTER

ASANDA Mchunu, a local teenager, was crowned the new Miss Teen Commonwealth SA last weekend in Pretoria. She beat 29 other girls from all over the country for the title. Mchunu won a R15 000 cash prize as well as other prizes from the competition sponsors and will be the new representative for a few brands. She does not know as yet what she wants to do with the money, but plans to keep it as a safety net in the meantime. “It will come in handy; it might not be next week or next month or even next year but sometime it will,” she said. Mchunu was previously crowned Miss Junior Teen South Africa in 2014 and has participated in several charity projects and events. She plans to use her new title to keep doing charity work and build on what she has already achieved. “To me, winning this title does not mean I get to change what I was doing before. It just means more consistency. Now I will carry on the work I started with the Human Dignity Centre, M.T.R. Smit Children’s Haven and Rolemodels Imfundo Foundation. However, I am looking into starting my own charity organisation,” she said. Mchunu added that she chose these charities because they deal specifically with children and that the best way to make a difference was to start with them. She is currently a first-year Media, Communication and Culture student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). “It is clearly evident that my passion lies in Media and people.” Mchunu said that her new title is not meant for her alone. “This title is not just for me, it’s for every-

Vistarus celebrates 18 years of changing lives Bryan Prins with his youngest son, 18-month-old Theo Prins, at the Vistarus Mission Centre in Sydenham.

ANIKA DE BEER VISTARUS Mission Station in Sydenham officially celebrated its 18th year of service to the Eastern Cape community on Friday. Vistarus is a family-run organisation dedicated to getting homeless and troubled people off the street. On July 8 1998, Kobus and Lynette Jacobs started this life-changing centre and since then they have sold most of their earthly belongings to keep it afloat. Lynette Jacobs said that they had no idea what they were doing when they started on this journey and learned most of what they know through various mistakes until things evolved into the smooth-running system they have today. “God told us to love these people. And that is exactly what we are doing here,” she added. On average they house about 80 children at any given time and provide housing for more than 400 people. Vistarus is actually a community within a community. It has its own little tuck shop, a playground for the children and several fundraising projects

in progress. They even have a doctor who comes in once a week for those who need medical assistance or advice. The centre rents out apartments to people with jobs on the outside and provides a home to the homeless and destitute. For those who cannot pay their own way, there is a programme they must take part in, in order to stay at the centre. “Every new person is interviewed by Kobus to get a feel for their circumstances so we know what to do with them next,” said Nadia Jacobs, public relations officer for Vistarus. The programme lasts for at least three months, during which addicts, alcoholics and abuse victims must attend church and counselling, and adhere to several rules before graduating. The programme is mandatory for both adults and children. They each get a set of clothes, shoes and other essentials when they arrive for which they are responsible. They are eventually placed into the work programme at the centre. The various jobs on offer at the centre include working in the laundry room, the kitchen, the library, the wood work shop and the Plastic Plant owned

by the centre. There is also a crèche where people can leave their children in the morning before going to work. The biggest project currently running at the centre is the recycling project, with more than 60 people working in it. It provides the bulk of the centre’s income. Most of the essential supplies at the centre such as clothes and food come from sponsors. Woolworths has been the centre’s biggest food supplier since 2007. “The majority of the guys that come in are very malnourished and thin. That is why the good meals are so important,” said Steven Bolhuis, who recently joined the centre as a mission worker. The centre cooks more than 20 000 meals every month and uses about 40 loaves of bread every day. The centre has started a few new projects recently such as a solar panel project and a safe house for babies called Hope Baby Safe Home where they wish to provide shelter for children being placed in the foster care system. Westering High presents ‘Ipi Ntombi’ Musical NCEBA DLADLA

Westering High cast members and directors meet original Ipi Ntombi cast member and choreographer Andy Chabeli (seated right). They are teachers, anti-clockwise, Akhona Nkumanda, Amanda Engelbrecht and Lizel Feltham.

WESTERING High School will present a South African Musical Ipi Ntombi at the Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale from 3 to 6 August. Admission is R50 for adults and R30 for pensioners and learners. To ensure that the school presents the best quality production with its multitalented learners, the school acquired the services of one of the original cast members, Andy Chabeli, to assist with the choreography and fine tuning of both song and presentation. Westering High has been staging productions once every two years. “We do these kind of productions once in two years because of the immense talent that we have at Westering High School,” said Production Manager Lizel Feltham. Feltham said Ipi Ntombi was a special request from headmaster Steward Hayward who as a young man saw the original production in 1974 when it premiered. “That first production left a lasting impres-

sion on me,” Steward agreed. “Furthermore, we felt that this multilingual and multicultural musical production Ipi Ntombi could work well in exposing our own multilingual and multicultural learners in this

day and age,” Feltham said. This production, however, was not smooth sailing all the time, according to Feltham. She said, “When you buy the rights to do any other production you usually get lots of infor-

mation and materials. This was not the case with Ipi Ntombi. “But luckily, we’ve got a very able production team made up of (Eddie) Leroux and (John) Allen taking charge of music and (Amanda) Engelbrecht and Coetzee on vocal directions.” With this team, including Sibabalwe Ngewu doing choreography and their “secret weapon” Akhona Nkumanda – the director, Westering High School is bound to present the best production ever, believes Feltham. “I feel very special being a member of the cast,” said Masande Nkangana in Grade 11. Sinovuyo Blackie, also in Grade 11, likes the storyline. She said, “I like the storyline and being in this production. It’s an honour, as not everybody made it through auditions.” “I’m impressed with what I saw. These kids are really talented. There’s little touch-ups that I need to do,” said Chabeli in his first visit to the school two weeks back. He promised to come-back next week to deal with other issues like costumes so that the cast looks almost exactly like the original.

REPORTER ONE of Nelson Mandela Bay’s most popular comedians, Roland Gaspar, is galvanising an ensemble of well-known local comedians to help put smiles on more children’s faces with his Humour with a Heart Comedy Fest at The Boardwalk Amphitheatre on July 29. Proceeds generated from the event will be donated to the Smile Foundation which works together with the country’s Academic Hospitals to put the smile back onto children’s faces with free corrective facial reconstructive surgery and treatments. “Comedy fans can have a great laugh with some of Port Elizabeth’s awesome comedic talent, and help put smiles on the faces of children who are unable to smile. It’s a great event with an excellent cause,” says Vuyiswa King, Events and Entertainment Manager at The Boardwalk. Gaspar has been a professional comedian since winning Barry Hilton’s Take a Chance Gameshow in 2005. He has since been seen in comedy-themed TV ads for Isuzu, Makro, MiWay, GetBucks and many more. His voice has also been heard on radio ads across the city and the nation, and he has performed with many of the biggest names in SA comedy. Amongst the comedians joining him for the Humour with a Heart Comedy Fest are Niqui Cloete-Barrass and Annaline Stiglingh, fresh from the successful run of their comic-cabaret show The Midlife Chronicles: Defying Gravity. They will be sharing their comedic and vocal talents with hilarious results. Also in the mix is “Big Pete” Moss, who will be adding some musical mirth to the show. Tickets to the show are available at Computicket at R100 per person.

Morningside High School gets back on track ANIKA DE BEER MORNINGSIDE High School held a ‘Youth Celebration’ on June 23 in an effort to inspire the learners in sport with the support of a few external coaches. The event was dedicated entirely to team building among sports teams. Under the watchful eyes of Siyanda Jemsana, his people and Onke Sotyato, owner of Unearth Entertainment, the learners were led through a programme containing ‘icebreakers’, a lesson called “Who am I”, the various stages of team building, communications and a number of games played outside. Jemsana, the owner of Afrotangible Entertainment and Arts, said their aim was to get kids looking forward to playing sport. They want the learners to play at least two sports a year, one in the winter and another during the summer. “It is very important for kids to play sport,” said Jemsana, who is a basketball player and former Morningside High learner. He added that the event was to promote sport and to get learners who are not academically gifted to understand that they stand a chance at winning a scholarship if they are good at sport. “Most parents can’t afford to send their kids to university after high school,” he said. This is a very common concern among parents. There were many basic sports that were previously not available at the school due to a lack of coaches. This caused many learners to lose interest in the sports programme at the school.

“We started rugby three months ago. There was no rugby team at the school,” Jemsana said. They started the u16 team. The school currently offers netball, hockey, soccer, rugby, basketball and tennis. New sports include table tennis and swimming, and a cricket team is in the making. A rowing club is in the pipeline for next year. On the academic side of things, the school is also forming a debate team and looking into the possibility of spelling bees for high school. A recent article in the Business Day Live states that about 60% of children in South Africa cannot read at even a basic level at the end of Grade 4. Jemsana said that this is a problem

for the Morningside learners as well. “Oftentimes, the answer is correct, but the spelling is wrong. You cannot really give them a mark.” The spelling bees are an attempt at addressing this problem. Twice a week the learners only go home at 3pm, when things like the debate team are introduced to them. “We get more involved with the school on a one-on-one basis.” According to Jemsana, the principal, Saraswathi Pather, is trying very hard to change the school for the better. “We even introduced tablets this year.” He added that they are considering getting the entire school involved in an event like the Youth Celebration for Mandela Day.

They equipped and empowered them with the resources needed to become social entrepreneurs and take their business to the next level. Organiser Ryan Le Roux says that this is an example of the innovation the market is using to turn profit into purpose. Phumla Dyafta and her team were invited to sell their surplus vegetables at the Valley Market recently as part of the market’s goal to give previously disadvantaged people an opportunity to be involved in business. The ladies arrived with heads of cabbage and bunches of carrots and spinach. They had woken up early on Saturday morning to pick the vegetables as they wanted them to be as fresh as possible - by 11am they had sold out completely. Likusasa Lomama consists of 35 backyard

vegetable gardens planted by families in Kwadwesi. The aim is for the produce from these gardens to supply the Community Soup Kitchen with enough vegetables to serve the needy in the neighbourhood. Currently it serves over 100 men, women and children every day. The project was started in 2012 by a group of ladies who needed to feed their families. Due to the need in the community they soon started a soup kitchen in a garage for two days a week. Anyone was welcome to their soup provided they start a vegetable garden in their back yards, as well to assist the soup kitchen. The Likusasa ladies will be back in full force at the next SPAR Valley Market on August 6 with many more fresh vegetables to sell. SPAR Eastern Cape is excited to be a part of this community initiative in supporting local entrepreneurs. Their aim is to grow local suppliers with the hope of finding a vendor that can be mentored and grown into possibly one of their listed suppliers.

Youth Employment summit to be held REPORTER THE Youth Employment Enterprise and Skills Summit (YEESS) is a social impact initiative of CS Innovations and its partners to address critical youth employment enterprise and skills solutions. YEESS is an Eastern Cape Youth Activation Project that addresses youth unemployment and discouraged youth in the age group 18 to 35 to become actors and not spectators. The two-day event is set to take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on July 20 and 21. This project comprises three components running parallel to one another over the two days: • YEESS solutions driven summit is a conference that will feature influential speakers and practitioners such as Dr Bridgette Gasa, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at The Elilox, Khaya Matiso, Principal at PE College of Education, and the sponsor of the YEESS Summit, brainstorming solutions to the youth challenge. • The YEESS Inspire event will bring together some of the Nelson Mandela Bay and SA’s top successful youth entrepreneurs such as Thabang Mabuza, Founder and Chief Resource Officer at Ulwazi Resource Consulting and Yusuf Randera Reece, Co-

founder and CEO of Awethu Projects, sharing their stories of struggle and success and learnings and, more importantly, how these things can inspire you. There are only 200 seats to be filled. • YEESS Job Exhibition is a platform for youth that are unemployed and would like to increase their chances of getting employed by getting access to free training on job readiness, preparatory interviews, CV support, job search essentials, and get ready to kick-start your perfect job or future career. All companies are invited to participate in the Expo as either exhibitors, to offer mock interviews for the youth, or offer training. Applications will be available at all Municipal public libraries. • The YEESS Business Idea Competition is open for youth aged 18-35 years from the NMB Metro only and applications open July 25. The shortlisted Top 100 best business ideas will be selected and successful entrants will receive advanced entrepreneurship training and enterprise readiness support and stand the chance to pitch their ideas for funding and technical support partners including mentorship. The competition closes on August 15. For more info, contact Kayleen Lottering, at 041 364 1856 or info@yeess.co.za

“It is has been a privilege to see people who directly benefit from this massive initiative being the ones taking power into their own hands,” said Brett Marshall, Fundraising Manager of the Association of Persons with Disabilities (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay. The APD is an NGO that owns Ability, the clothing manufacturing factory in Nelson Mandela Bay, which was started as a fundraising concept to create employment for persons with disabilities. The teams consist of persons with disabilities who have been trained on-site to produce the items from scratch. “As a person with a disability myself, it is great to know I am taking part in something that will eventually benefit others with disabilities and for that I thank Casual Day,” said Doris Sonjica, seamstress at the Ability Workshop. Ability manufactured the burgundy coloured T-shirts and buckets hats, which have the 2016 Casual Day theme, “Up Your Game”, printed on

Subcontractors are required for the following subcontracts: 2 x General Maintenance Contracts throughout the route.

them. By wearing the merchandise, people can show off their support whilst contributing to the cause. “We are always grateful to our community members who donate and “sport” their support for the campaign by wearing the t-shirts and official stickers on Casual Day. This has sustained the campaign for 22 years, making a difference to many other beneficiaries who support persons with disabilities,” said Marshall. The apparel is currently being distributed nationwide to NGO’s where community members can donate and get their official 2016 Casual Day merchandise. Casual Day is an annual fund-raising campaign aimed at supporting persons with disabilities in South Africa. “We were happy to receive and agree to APD’s proposal as they are a reputable manufacturer but also one that shares the same goals and values of the Casual Day project,” said Therina Wentzel, National Director of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South African (NCPPDSA), the founders of Casual Day. Casual Day will be celebrated on September 2 this year throughout the country. For more info, visit www.casualday.co.za.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

Ford’s Figo now available in sedan and newlook hatch WHEN the first Ford Figo came out in SA, I liked the performance and features of the car, but it lacked that certain “je ne sais quoi” that its competitors, such as the Chevrolet Spark, had as far as exterior looks went. Which is strange, considering how good Ford’s Fiesta and Focus feature in the design stakes. Ford has, however, redeemed itself with its relaunch in mid-October last year of the Figo – offering it for the first time in hatch and sedan versions. And in my opinion the dynamic, sporty-looking hatch version is a vast improvement on the first model, while the sedan version could still do with a little more oomph. The new Figo is available in three specification levels, i.e the Ambiente, Trend and highest spec Titanium. One has the choice between 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, as well as manual and PowerShift Auto transmission options. Express on Wheels recently took two of the new Ford Figo models on the mom’s taxi route for a week – the Ford Figo Sedan 1.5 litre petrol PowerShift (Auto) transmission in the high spec Titanium version (retailing at R209 900) and the diesel hatchback with manual transmission, the 1.5 TDCi Trend (retailing at R203 900). Exterior With the all-new Ford Figo, the designers incorporated Ford’s Kinetic 2.0 design language, as seen in the likes of the latest Ford Fusion and Focus. The five-door hatch incorporates a rising roofline with a sporty spoiler and good looking tailgate with a dynamic looking design. The sedan version has a more conservative styling and is more rounded at the back for a bigger boot. Interior The interior is also completely new and boasts some innovative smart features, which (depending on model) include a new devicedocking station, Bluetooth with Voice Activation, the programmable MyKey® function, as well as electronic automatic temperature control. The all-new Figo has 20 smart storage spaces and convenience features which include a large glove box that is big enough to fit a laptop. The Sedan offers up to 445 litres of luggage space in the boot with fold-down rear seats increasing its loading capacity and versatility. The seat-backs of the all-new Hatch (Trend

and Titanium) have a 60/40 split for greater flexibility.

of torque and its combined cycle fuel consumption is stated as 5.6L/100km.

Smart technology The all-new Figo features impressive smart technologies that help people to integrate their car into their digital lives. MyFord Dock® is a first-in-class feature and standard in the Ambiente and Trend spec vehicles. This allows mobile phones, MP3 players and satellite navigation systems to be mounted and charged and to be integrated into the car’s entertainment system. Ford’s SYNC® integrated multimedia and connectivity system is standard equipment in the top of the range Figo Titanium. SYNC® lets drivers interact hands-free with their mobile devices and entertainment system with voice commands. On the Ambiente and Trend models, a standard four-speaker audio system is provided that includes a radio/CD unit with MP3-compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, as well as USB and Aux inputs. The Titanium further gains remote audio controls on the steering wheel. The all-new Figo Titanium also features Ford’s MyKey® with which owners can set sensible restrictions for drivers with less experience.

Test drive of the Figo 1.5 TDCi Trend hatch The diesel models are powered by a 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi engine that develops 74kW and 215Nm with the average fuel consumption stated as 4.1L/100km. It has a five-speed manual gearbox. I liked the new hatch shape with its sporty look and while you will not often equate a sporty looking car with a diesel engine, this engine performs very well with impressive fuel consumption figures. The diesel engine is a bit loud when starting the car, but once it gets going and out on the open road the engine sound is hardly noticeable. The new instrument cluster design is an improvement on the old look. The hatch offers very adequate boot space and the number and placement of storage compartments is quite nifty.

Safety It features a minimum of dual front airbags on the lower spec models, while the Titanium version has six airbags – including side and curtain airbags. There are ABS brakes across the range, plus Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist on the top derivatives. This holds the vehicle for up to three seconds as the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the accelerator. The test drives: Figo 1.5 litre petrol PowerShift Titanium Sedan This is the highest spec petrol version of the all-new Figo featuring an auto transmission and retailing at R203 900. The sedan’s exterior is a bit too conservatively styled to my taste and doesn’t look as attractive as the new hatch model – but sedans are by nature probably supposed to look more practical than sporty. And the practicability of its big boot space makes up for this. The interior boasts bits and pieces from the Fiesta and other Ford models and is quite roomy with ample legroom. It is a basic car

but has handy gadgets such as Ford Sync, steering wheel controls and USB ports, electric windows and nice storage spaces. The automatic transmission is a bonus for me. While you will always have a bit of a problem with a heavy foot on the accelerator when you are driving a car with a smallish engine coupled to an automatic transmission, the Figo’s advanced 6-speed PowerShift Auto trans- Prices: The prices for the hatch models range from mission is quite capable and willing. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Hamilton scores 4th British win THE notoriously unpredictable British weather was surprisingly docile right up until ten minutes before the start of the British Grand Prix. As the rain came down the Silverstone circuit race director Charlie Whiting declared that the race would start behind the safety car. Although safety is of paramount importance the safety-car start deprived everyone of the battle, into turn one, between the frontrow starting Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The safety-car pulled into the pitlane after five laps with most of the field switching to intermediate tyres while Hamilton continued to build a gap to second-placed Rosberg. Hamilton, Rosberg and the two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo had not swopped their wet tyres for intermediates. They would have been at a disadvantage to those behind were it not for Pascal Wehrlein who aquaplaned his Manor into the gravel trap and out of the race on lap seven – resulting in the virtual safety-car being brought out. As the race settled after the first round of

stops, Hamilton comfortably led the way from his teammate. On occasion Rosberg threatened to close the gap to Hamilton, but never followed through. He also had to deal with a spirited Max Verstappen snapping at his heels. After a few laps of hounding Rosberg, the 18-year-old Verstappen pulled off a stunningly brave move around the outside of Chapel to take second place. The season still has some way to go but this overtaking move will take some beating. As the circuit continued to dry, the next round of stops saw everyone switch to dry medium compound tyres. Behind Hamilton, Rosberg, and Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo was running a very distant fourth with Sergio Perez and Kimi Raikkonen even further behind. Despite no rain falling, the circuit was slow to dry and several drivers, including race leader Hamilton, had several off track moments. Though it would take some time, Rosberg eventually found a way to pass Verstappen. He closed the gap to Hamilton from eight to six seconds but never truly looked likely to threaten the lead of the race. Hamilton was masterful in the wet conditions just as in 2008, which to date is arguably his best Grand Prix win. While Ricciardo drove an uninspiring race to fourth, Ferrari’s newly re-signed Kimi Raikkonen was able to close down a substantial gap to Perez for fifth. Perez finished sixth ahead of Force India teammate Nico Hulkenberg in seventh and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz in eighth.

Sebastian Vettel completed a miserable day for Ferrari in ninth. The German driver started the race in eleventh after suffering yet another five-place gearbox penalty. Though there was nothing deliberate about it, he was slapped with a 5-second penalty for forcing Felipe Massa off the tack. The penalty didn’t affect his final position in the race. The second Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat scored the final point in tenth. Controversy enveloped the Mercedes team as Rosberg ran into gearbox problems late in the race. The pitwall gave instruction on which setting to change and coached Rosberg to shift through seventh gear. By telling the driver to shift through the gear, the team breached the driver communication rule, which prohibits the team from giving instructions to fix a performance issue. Nearly four hours after the race the stewards imposed a ten-second penalty on Rosberg, which dropped him to third in the race classification. Mercedes has stated their intent to appeal the decision. A new precedent was set as it’s the first instance where a penalty had to be imposed for the breach of driver communication rules. However, a ten-second penalty isn’t much of a deterrent if the alternative is retirement. Nico Rosberg started the season with four consecutive wins but has only claimed victory in one of the last six races. Add to this that a fourth win on home soil has put Hamilton only one point adrift of the championship lead and it appears as if the Brit is gaining an ominous momentum.

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

Sport – you just have to love it

You have to forgive Serena. This was after winning her 22nd major title, which took her level with Steffi Graf’s Open era record. The victory moved Serena to say: “Number 22 is awesome. Centre court feels like home!” What a match – it brought the best out too, in Angelique. “Serena, you deserve it,” she said. “You are a great champion, a great person.” Doesn’t that make you feel good? Sends a shivery feeling down your spine – not to mention the match between Scotland’s Andy Murray and Canada’s Milos Raonic in the men’s singles final. Andy Murray, who has won the Wimbledon singles title before, did it again, sobbing with joy at beating Raonic in straight sets, despite the belief that Scots are generally unemotional types. But that’s Andy, a true sportsman: proud of his achievement but humble in his attainment thereof. Up the Scots! There was plenty of excitement on the rugby field too. Did the irony of the Sharks 26-10 Super Rugby victory over the Cheetahs at Durban’s Kings Park strike you as odd? It looked for a while as though Sharks coach, Gary Gold, might grow a permanent frown across his troubled forehead as the lads from Bloem took an early 7-0 lead. Somehow the KZN boys hung on in a strangely stop-start game in which the Chee-

tahs often looked the better side. But give the Natalians their due, they stuck to their guns with brave defence from forwards and backs alike, and gradually the tide began to turn. The turning point, with flyhalf Garth April providing 14 points with the boot, came from an unstoppable try by JP Pietersen. As hard as the Free Starters kept trying, this was the crucial turning point, even though the Sharks’ over-eagerness through three crucial knock-ons, cost them three tries in the match’s final quarter, a possible 21 points more. Referee Stewart Berry might have awarded a penalty try against the Sharks at a crucial stage of the first half. Would it have made a difference? Who knows? Unlikely somehow, judging by the manner in which, as the game drew to its close, the Durban team produced impenetrable defence. The Sharks now need to put away the Sunwolves at Kings Park, while the Bulls face the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next Saturday – crucial matches both, though the Durban side have a two-point advantage over their rivals going into the final round-robin weekend of the competition. Finally, over the next several weeks some mostly unintended humour from sports greats of the past. First the great Springbok forward, Boy Louw, seeing a Wallaby for the first time in Australia: “Jeez, okes, looks at that big mice!” And while refereeing a club game in Stellenbosch, after a complaint by the opposing team captain: “That was never a try, Oom Boy.” Louw’s crisp reply: “If you looks in the Argus tonight you’ll see it was a try!” Watch out for these, there are plenty more!

THIS year’s Refreshhh Global Diabetes Walk will be taking place on Saturday, July 23, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium starting at 9am. Whilst only 2 million cases of diabetes are reported in South Africa, it is estimated that between 4 to 6 million people in SA may be living with diabetes. Internationally run events like the Global Diabetes Walk are aimed at highlighting Diabetes and helping people become aware of this killer illness. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 which cannot be prevented and Type 2 diabetes which is caused by the body not responding correctly to insulin. Type 2 Diabetes is caused mainly by obesity and being unfit and, whilst once a disease of the elderly, it’s now starting to emerge in teenagers and even children under the age of 10. The prevention of type 2 diabetes starts with acknowledging that you are in a high risk group and getting tested annually. Lifestyle and type 2 diabetes are closely linked. To highlight diabetes in our community, the PE branch of Diabetes SA host this annual fundraising and awareness walk sponsored by Refreshhh Sugar Free. Exhibitors and free blood glucose testing will be on offer before the social untimed 5km walk around the North End Lake and stadium precinct. Free T-shirts and goody bags are available to the first 500 people to enter whilst medals and a 2 litre Refreshhh Sugar Free drink are given to all finishers. Online registration is R50, manual entry at News Café Boardwalk, or Brian Bands Sports is R60 and/or on the morning of the event. This is a pet friendly walk with a R10 per pet on a leash entry fee with the first 50 pets each getting their own goody bag from Montego Pet Nutrition. See www.zsports.co.za/GlobalWalk for further information and online registration.

Madibaz surfers make USSA team REPORTER NMMU students Dane Cox and Dane van Greunen surfed their way into the University Sport South Africa (USSA) team after impressing in the annual championships at Victoria Bay, near George, last month. The Billabong Madibaz team ended third in the men’s event and fourth in the women’s contest for a third place in the overall team standings. However, there was some joy when Van Greunen and Cox were named in the USSA men’s team. The 20-year-old Van Greunen was selected for the third straight year, which delighted the third-year marketing student. “It was an honour to be selected for the third Billabong Madibaz surfer Dane van Greunen has been included in the USSA men’s team after the PHOTO:CHRISTO ZIETSMAN year running,” said Van Greunen, who attend- annual varsity championships. ed Grey Junior and Pearson High. “To be included with some great names of the sport is al- mation that he could compete with the best of “It was my sixth USSA tournament and the ways a job well done. the country’s surfers. competition is always very stiff.” “The level of surfing is always high and with “Making the team again this year showed me Van Greunen, who lives in Summerstrand, surfers like Shaun Joubert taking part there is I could still compete at a high level,” said Cox. not far from Port Elizabeth’s famous Pipe surfno room for error.” “Although I was disappointed on the day with ing spot, paid tribute to his parents and the varFor the 24-year-old Cox, who was educated at my result, I realise now that things don’t always sity for their support. He added, though, that he would like to see greater investment in the sport. “I just want to take this opportunity to stress the need for sponsorship in the surf industry. “Competing or qualifying for the World Tour is extremely expensive and almost impossible for many young surfers. “Unless there is government intervention or support from the corporate world, many surfers are simply not able to pursue their dreams.” Cox said he had made many close friends during his surfing days at NMMU, who had helped him develop a competitive edge. “I believe all the competitive surfing I’ve done over the years has left a competitive streak in me and I aim to pursue this competitive attitude in the work place next year and in the years to come.”

Volkswagen Rally action headed to the Eastern Cape THE 34th annual VW Rally will take place this Friday and Saturday in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage areas. This is round four of the national rally championship season and will include a regional contingent of competitors as well. The Volkswagen Rally is the highlight of the Eastern Cape motorsport calendar. The 2016 event includes 12 stages of competition which are spread over the two days – with a total stage distance of nearly 190 km. It is going to be a tough challenge for the competitors as the Volkswagen Rally has an unforgiving nature for any team that is even slightly under-prepared. “The Volkswagen Rally covers a variety of terrain types,” say route directors, Joe and Rikus Fourie. “It isn’t going to be an easy rally, but it certainly is going to be interesting and the teams will know they’ve just finished a round of the national championship by the time they are done.” The Auto Pavilion in Uitenhage will feature

as the traditional start for the rally and provide a chance for the rally fans to meet the teams and see the cars up close before the action begins. This will take place this Friday while the overnight parc ferme for the event is Bay West Mall – it is also the location for the restart of the Volkswagen Rally on Saturday morning. The event will start at 1.45 pm on Friday when the competitors will pull off from Auto Pavilion

and head to stage one at Jachtvlakte. “Some of the 2016 route spectators and competitors will have seen before, but there are a few new challenges to consider,” says Fourie. “The Bay West Mall stage is a new one – and that will be the highlight to end the first day of the event.” “We’ve tried to make the VW Rally an easy one for the spectators to follow and also keep the sta-

ges close to areas where rally fans can access good vantage points – as well as using areas where the rally cars will run multiple times.” A Volkswagen Rally spectator guide will be available online and at the Volkswagen dealerships in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro before the event gets underway. There will also be spectator guides available at the Auto Pavilion start on Friday. – REPORTER
