Warm hearts nourish bodies on Mandela Day
SPAR Eastern Cape joined Love Story to celebrate Mandela Day by assisting the less fortunate on July 18. In a first for the company, the City Feed lunch initiative was launched in Fleming Street in the Port Elizabeth city centre when about 200 homeless people were provided with a hot meal. SPAR was introduced to the concept by Elaine Watson of Love Story, an organisation which has set up feeding schemes in the city centre each day of the week. Read more on page 20. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
NMMU APPROVED TO BECOME 10TH SCHOOL IN COUNTRY
Medical School at NMMU N REPORTER
MMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz has announced that the Government has given formal approval for the establishment of South Africa’s 10th Medical School at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth.
The momentous decision comes after years of campaigning by the University for the creation of a second medical school in the Eastern Cape Province, in addition to
the existing one based at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Mthatha. “For the city and region, and indeed the country, it is a truly historic decision, after many years of clamouring by parents, students, doctors and other healthcare professionals in the province. So this is absolutely fantastic news,” says Swartz. The University received the news on July 6, when the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, requested NMMU to both proceed with creating a new medical school by 2020 and to expand its existing portfolio of health sciences programmes in ten different health profession-
al categories. This follows years of lobbying. “We assembled an expert group, consulted widely with health care professionals, looked at international best practices, and developed a 10-year Master Plan, entitled ‘Blueprint for a medical degree: transforming health science education to support equity in health’,” says Swartz. The Master Plan proposes “radical intervention to improve access, relevance, quality and transformative graduate attributes with a strong focus on increasing access to rural and poor youth linked to community and local economic development.”
South Africa compares unfavourably with other middle-income countries in terms of medical doctors per 1000 population. In 2008, South Africa had 0.9 medical professionals per 1 000 population compared with Brazil at 1.9, Mexico 1.8, the UK 2.47 and Australia 2.3. The United Kingdom has 120 000 doctors for a population of 60 million; South Africa, with a population over 50 million, only has approximately 27 000 doctors, according to the World Health Organization. Correction: Fairview Hospital IN last week’s edition, in the article “Fairview Hospital delayed”, it was stated that the hospital is expected to be a day hospital, which is incorrect. “The Origin Health Fairview Hospital will be a general acute care hospital providing a full range of services. The hospital will have six surgical theatres, medi-
cal wards, an intensive care unit, high care unit, maternity unit, maternity unit, neonatal unit, paediatric unit, an accident and emergency unit and a day hospital facility,” said Tanya Venter, PR and Marketing Coordinator for Origin Health. The PE Express unreservedly apologise for the error.

Continued from page 1 The country currently trains 1 200 to 1 300 medical doctors a year and needs to at least double up its numbers. The Eastern Cape, with a population of 6.56 million is faced with huge health care and socio-economic challenges, with only one medical school located in Mthatha at WSU, which has an annual intake of around 150 students and graduating about 100 doctors and a small number of specialists each year. According to NMMU Council Chair, Judge Ronnie Pillay, “the decision is long overdue. We have been sending our school-leavers for medical training, at great cost, to other provinces for decades now, while NMMU has modern infrastructure, a strong health sciences faculty, plenty of land, in a city with highly skilled medical professionals, a sophisticated private sector, three major public hospitals, with one (Dora Nginza) originally built to accommodate a future medical training facility. “This has long been Council’s dream, and I want to applaud all Council members for being so steadfast in pursuing this goal. I am also confident the medical fraternity will support and participate in this exciting development.” Dr Nzimande has also requested his counterpart, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, the Minister of Health, to seek the desired policy directive from the National Health Council to commence preparation of the clinical training platforms that will be required to support a medical school
at NMMU. In an early indication of its support, the Department of Higher Education in 2014 provided R72.3m over three years to NMMU to set up, among other things, new pre-medical programmes to allow for multi-entry-options towards the MBChB degree. These students may then qualify for thirdyear MBChB enrolment in 2020, which is also the target year for intake of NMMU’s first year school-leavers for the same degree. Starting with an initial total intake of 50, the numbers will grow incrementally to 200 undergraduate students, as well as starting to introduce medical specialist training programmes. Prof Vic Exner, Executive Dean of Health Sciences, said, “the past four and a half years have been most exciting and challenging, transforming and re-aligning existing faculty structures and programmes, crafting new offerings, and promoting a bio-psycho-social approach to South Africa’s healthcare and lifestyle management challenges. “Strong, rigorous clinical training is indispensable, but so too is the need for models to transcend the limits of traditional approaches, and the exploration of holistic healthcare strategies that will embed medical training in wider human capabilities required for a healthy and prosperous nationhood to emerge.”
NMMU nursing students, along with all other students within its Faculty of Health Sciences, undertake internships throughout the community as part of their curriculum.

Daarna is Esquire Technologies, ’n rekenaarwinkel in Newtonpark, Saterdag beroof.
Binnelandse sake bly langer oop vir ID’s
“Drie mans, waarvan een gewapen is, het kort na 12:00 ingekom en die werknemer aan diens gedreig.” Volgens Labans het die boewe met kontant en rekenaartoerusting gevlug. ’n Vrou (30) is skaars ’n uur later in haar huis in Jacksonville beroof.

EC voters urged to exercise their right next Wednesday NCEBA DLADLA LEGISLATURE speaker Noxolo Kiviet said having analysed the previous voting patterns with the IEC and seeing how low the turn-out was in some areas of the Eastern Cape, they decided to go around the province encouraging registered voters to go out and vote next Wednesday, August 3. The IEC has also been conducting voter education campaigns throughout the province.
Kiviet said that in some areas, turnout was as low as 40 per cent in the previous elections. “As the institution, we cannot allow that 40% of voters decide who to rule municipalities. Those who won would be governing on behalf of the minority and that is not what democracy requires,” the legislature speaker said. According to the IEC, by the 1st of June this year, 3 337 532 people had registered to vote. This number was made up of 1 908 575 females and 1 428 957 males. The age group that

BE HAPPY, YES U CAN HE IS BACK AFTER 5 YEARS OF SEPARATION
My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Ligan and Miss Jessica looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Ligan and Miss Jessica performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled!

Metro to hold Cultural Arts Festival this week NCEBA DLADLA
“Economic growth is paramount if the metro municipality wants to fulfil the mandate of bringing a better life for all the residents,” he said. He added that had Grahamstown not started the Festival that now was making millions of rands for the GDP, we would not be talking about it. The same, he said, was the case with the Kirkwood Biltong Festival and the Cape Town Jazz Festival. Arts and Recreation Executive Director Noxolo Nqwazi said 60% of the budget was spent on the youth – viewed in the metro as the vulnerable sector, and 95% of the total budget would be paid to local artists and SMMEs. Residents would be able to enjoy 34 performances of all music genres, dance forms, comedy, poetry and visual arts among others. From this year onwards, Nqwazi said, the winter season in the metro municipality would never be seen as a dead-end. She said it was time for the people of the metro to light it up and attract investment through its creative industries.
NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality will hold the inaugural Mandela Bay Cultural Festival from Friday this week. The R5 million four-day festival, aimed at exposing the immense arts and cultural talents of the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay, will take place at different venues including Vuyisile Mini Square, PE Opera House, Athenaeum, Rooftop, the Art Galleries and local museums. “We’re holding the Mandela Cultural Arts Festival during Mandela Month, giving the youth an opportunity to use their talents in line with the creative economy pillar that we’ve identified for economic development,” said executive mayor Dr Danny Jordaan at the launch of the festival last week. He added that the festival had been planned for the past three years, and was not an election ploy as others would like to believe.

Driving this much anticipated event are former captain, eighth man and EP player Calvin van Appel and team mate Leon Ferreira who also played for EP. “This is the first-ever reunion of the club and we would like it to be an annual event,” said Van Appel. Well-known referees from the heydays of local rugby have been invited to the reunion. These include Jap Claassen, Laury Marx, Jimmy Smith-Belton, Herman Koornhof, Mike Callaghan and Morris Miltz. “I think it is about time to pull their legs and corner them about some of the arguable referee decisions they have made,” said Van Appel jokingly. Ferreira has been hard at work to compile a spectacular slide show of the hundreds of photos portraying the action of those days which will be shown on big screen. The club was established during 1928 and an old dirt track near the railway station, was used as their initial rugby field. Soon afterwards a new field was acquired in Lower Drostdy Street. The club progressed from strength to strength with the best years during the 1970s when OC scooped all the local prestige cups like the Birch Cup, Grand Challenge Cup (1972, 1976 & 1979), Dewar Shield as well as the Oosterlig Cup. A total of 35 OC players have during the period of 1949 to 1986 played for EP. In those days the highlight on the sporting calendar was the annual clash between Old Collegians and Swifts Rugby Club, which was supported by thousands of spectators.
Came the 1990s, social and economic transformation hit the town and it was said that “Uitenhage is too big for one club and too small for two clubs.” Thus OC and Swifts amalgamated becoming the Uitenhage Rugby Club. “This should never have happened. It was a huge mistake and the end of good competitive rugby,” said Van Appel. Reunion & steak evening All former players (with their spouses) and supporters are invited to the reunion. It will be held on October 7th in the form of a steak evening at Barkly Street Theatre at 18:00 for 18:30. Tickets are limited and cost only R85 per person which includes a healthy meal. ) To book your seat contact Calvin van Appel on 082 572 8085 or Leon Ferreira on 082 460 8919 or 041 992 3605.

New library for Adolph Schauder learners REPORTER NELSON Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. With this in mind, and in celebrating Mandela Day last week, General Motors South Africa (GMSA) ploughed its efforts into education initiatives at the Adolph Schauder Primary School in Schauderville. As the beneficiary of the company’s 2016 Adopt-a-School programme, Adolph Schauder Primary School was abuzz for 67 Minutes for Mandela activities. GMSA executives, employees and retirees rolled up their sleeves to unveil new facilities whilst also serving a nourishing cup of soup and teaching Grade R’s arts and crafts. The school now boasts a brand-new library fully stocked with books donated by Oxford Books and GMSA employees, a vegetable garden cultivated by GMSA’s retirees and refurbished ablution facilities. GMSA Corporate Communications and PR
Manager, Gishma Johnson, said the company’s corporate social responsibility is aimed at sustainable projects that improve the quality of education. It is therefore no surprise that the company spent Mandela Day at Adolph Schauder Primary School. “67 Minutes for Mandela gave us an opportunity to involve our employees and their families in the projects and to witness the initiatives already undertaken by the company in the school. This year so far more than 100 employees and their families generously volunteered their time at the school,” said Johnson. Adolph Schauder Primary School Principal, Thomas Matthews, said the school community was extremely grateful for having been adopted by GMSA this year. “The renovations and improvements instil a sense of value and pride into our learners and teachers. GMSA’s generous efforts will have a huge positive impact on many learners who will pass through the school in years to come,” said Matthews. Officially unveiling the new library at Adolph Schauder Primary School on Mandela Day were, from left, Pamela Mbusi, District Education Officer from the Department of Education, Thomas Matthews, School Principal and Gishma Johnson, General Motors South Africa’s Corporate Communications and PR Manager. Tube of Hope for Sunflower Day REPORTER A NEW era has dawned for The Sunflower Fund, bringing with it fresh and exciting new transformations. Along with the new tagline “Hope begins with you”, the organisation has given National Bandana Day a complete facelift. The Sunflower Fund, a South African Non-Profit Company (NPC), together with key sponsor, Pick n Pay, have announced a brand-new campaign, called “Sunflower Day”, which will be celebrated annually on the third Friday of September. The campaign will run from August to the end of September, with the highlight being “Sunflower Day”, which will take
place on September 16 this year. The organisation’s iconic bandana has also undergone a significant change. Earlier this month, they unveiled their new commemorative product, known as the Tube of Hope - Tope, a revitalised version of the bandana, reflecting the renewed enthusiasm and excitement for their mission of increasing the number of stem cell donors in South Africa. With its unique design, the Tube of Hope - Tope is an affordable, multi-purpose article of clothing that can be worn as a headband, mask, scarf, cap or arm-band. Being broadly versatile, it may be used in a wide variety of sports or outdoor activities and will be available in 6 eyecatching colours. The Tope offers practical functionality
for the entire family. It also gives wearers the opportunity to show their support for this important cause. It will be available in a children’s size at R20 each and an adults’ size at R25 each and will go on sale at Pick n Pay stores nationwide, Round Table and several other retailers, including the online store, Zando, in August. Everyone is asked to join in and celebrate Sunflower Day, with the campaign being launched on August 7. For more information or to register, contact The Sunflower Fund on their toll-free number 080 012 1082.

Vintage Minis have made their way to online classifieds REPORTER MOST everyone has experienced the craziness of Stickeez from Pick ‘n Pay, and now, the latest collectable craze is miniature model grocery items received when you spend R150 or more at participating Checkers stores. The full Checkers Mini collection includes 29 of South Africa’s most recognised grocery item brands, such as All Gold tomato sauce, Albany superior white bread and Clover fresh milk, and has a prize incentive of R10 000 if you are one of the first 25 school learners to complete the entire collection. Although aimed at kids, adults can’t help but boast on their social platforms about their latest additions to their very own Little Shop. Claire Cobbledick, Head of Marketing for Gumtree SA, says that after the PnP Stickeez craze, where people were selling their units on Gumtree for R10 each, the team immediately trawled the site to see if any Minis had popped up yet. “But instead, our search led us to a vintage collection of mini products from a seller located in Port Elizabeth,” she continues. The owner of these nostalgic bottles, boxes and tubes and a regular Gumtree seller, Lindsay Steyn, actually doesn’t know much about them though as they were among many items in a huge assortment of things inherited earlier this year. Steyn thought that a fan that might be collecting them would see her ad and hopefully snatch them up. Very similar to the Checkers minis, just a bit more “vintage” and
rustic – the collection includes iconic brands of yesteryear such as Post Toasties, Three Stars Safety Matches and Wheatalin Puffed Wheat and can be viewed on Gumtree. “South Africans love South African iconic products and Checkers has hit the nail on the head with their newest campaign. They’ve managed to find a way for a kid’s collectable craze (which could be the cause of a few tantrums) to be bearable”, Cobbledick continues
“How awesome would it be to show off your 10-, 20- or 30-year old minis alongside your brand new ones?” These international brands are now mostly discontinued, but were extremely popular back in their day. Post Toasties were introduced in 1904 and discontinued in 2006, while Swedish made Three Stars Matches, which is now a collector’s item, are sold for up to R93 per box on Gumtree’s parent company eBay.
= Forming part of the current popular mini object craze, these vintage mini objects are being sold online by Lindsay Steyn.

SPAR shares the love on Mandela Day REPORTER SPAR Eastern Cape continued their commitment of giving back to the community when they joined Love Story to celebrate Mandela Day by assisting the less fortunate on July 18. In a first for the company, the City Feed lunch initiative was launched in Fleming Street in the Port Elizabeth city centre when about 200 homeless people were provided with a hot meal. SPAR was introduced to the concept by Elaine Watson of Love Story, an organisation
which has set up feeding schemes in the city centre each day of the week. “We were looking for an initiative whereby our SPAR ambassadors could get involved and assist in making a meaningful contribution to the community,” said SPAR EC sponsorship controller Roseann Shadrach. “The City Feed made perfect sense as we could assist in the preparation of the meals, as well as serve the homeless people in our city centre. “We felt that by helping the homeless we could ensure that they not only received a hot meal, but also had some of their dignity restored.”
The ingredients for the food, which ranged from peanut butter sandwiches to chicken stew, as well as cupcakes for dessert, were all provided by SPAR EC, with the staff of Love Story preparing the meals. Staff members from both organisations assisted in serving the meals, which were much appreciated by the homeless. Gelvandale’s Daryleen Adolf was overwhelmed at the opportunity to receive some sort of nourishment. “We have to say thank you to SPAR for giving this food,” she said. “Mandela Day is a very good day to give to people and to do great things for other peo-
ple. So thank you.” Liezel Filles, also from Gelvandale, was equally grateful. Shadrach said the concept was “a huge success” and was not just about fulfilling an initiative for Mandela Day. “We are always exploring new avenues to get involved within our community as we believe it is important to give back to those who support us. It was both a humbling experience and a pleasure to be able to serve food and beverages to the less fortunate. We were reminded to count our many blessings and to have a heart of servitude towards our fellow man,” she said.

Greyvensteins Givers Gain aiming to raise R2 million for charity MORE than R1,7 million has been raised for Port Elizabeth charities through the Greyvensteins Givers Gain campaign since its inception in 2013. The campaign, an ongoing charity drive which raises money for nine NPOs (non-profit organisations) through various events, was conceptualised by Greyvensteins Attorneys, a member of the Phatshoane Henny Group, the largest association of law firms in South Africa. A significant portion of this derives from local estate agencies, says Greyvensteins director and campaign coordinator Cor van Deventer. “We took a decision as law firm that it was time to give back to the community and to help the less fortunate by joining hands with the real estate sector,” explains Van Deventer about the philanthropic programme, which is designed around a year of fund-raising and time spent helping to improve the lives of the less fortunate. The efforts of participating agencies are recognized at the end-of-year Greyvensteins Givers Gain Gala. The campaign has “adopted” nine NPOs, which are shared by participating estate agencies. Among them are:
) Lake Farm Centre, a residential facility caring for intellectually disabled adults who live in home units and work in protective workshops; ) Missionvale Care Centre, which provides health, educational and social care services to impoverished residents; ) MTR Children’s Haven, an orphanage currently providing accommodation for 100 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years; ) Quest School for Learners with Autism, the only school for learners with Autism in the Eastern Cape; ) And the Rape Crisis Centre, which provides psychiatric, psychological support and counselling for victims of sexual and/or physical violence as well as community training;
According to Van Deventer, the Greyvensteins Givers Gain campaign is supported by over 200 individual estate agents. Now in its fourth year, it raises funds that help pay for day-to-day running expenses, food, property and vehicle maintenance, rates and taxes, and equipment. Events organised by Greyvensteins to promote the campaign include its well-attended monthly Property Forums, which feature celebrity guest speakers and industry specialists while simultaneously providing a platform on which to promote the campaign and keep participants up to date on its progress.
The annual Greyvensteins Potjiekos Competition, which takes place at the popular Friday night Sherwood Market, pits estate agency against agency in a friendly quest to cook up a prize-winning storm. Other events include the Greyvensteins Relay Race around St George’s Park in April. This is followed by the Greyvensteins Amazing Race, a “fun and educational event for a good cause”. Individually, agencies organise their own fundraising and publicity events, which take many forms. The annual Lake Farm Fun Day is the brainchild of Pam Golding Properties PE. Residents are treated to goodie bags, lunch, a laugh-aminute softball match and an afternoon of dancing. PGP PE is also a sponsor of the annual Lake Farm Run, and it organises product collections for the centre’s bakery in support of the Lake Farm Coffee Shop. IPC leads the way in terms of fundraising, having collected over R300 000 for its charity, the Quest School for Autism, through golf days, wine tastings, raffles, auctions and music trivia evenings. IPC manager Jeanne Willemstein says the money they’ve raised has contributed to the purchase of a bus and repairs to another bus that was involved in an accident, and paid for vital therapists’ kits. Second place belongs to Remax Independent Properties, which has raised more than R200 000 for the MTR Smit Children’s Home. Broker/owner Kobie Potgieter says, “We believe that giving starts the receiving process and it has been our experience that our agents get so much out of assisting and giving back to the community and in particular MTR.” Funds raised by her team have contributed to the day-to-day running of the facility, she says. “We alternate our support efforts for MTR. One year we concentrate on raising funds and the alternate year we plan and hold a fun day for the children, for example a fashion show where they keep the clothes that they modelled or a carnival day for them to enjoy. We also buy Christmas gifts for all the children,” she adds. “Givers Gain has grown from something small to a massive campaign very quickly. We started with a goal to raise R1 million and we’re now well on track to reach R2 million in half the time,” says Van Deventer. – REPORTER

PE’s own geek convention back again REPORTER LOVERS of geek and popular culture will have the opportunity to celebrate and interact with each other at the Con.ect convention this weekend. Con.ect 2016 will be taking place on July 30 and 31 at the NMMU Vodacom Indoor Sports Centre. Con.ect is a Port Elizabeth-based Non-
Profit Company (NPC) that hosts this yearly convention with the aim of creating a space in which like-minded people can gather with one another and share their passions, and to create a space where these genres can grow to a degree that will allow Port Elizabeth to become a focal point of popular culture within the country. Con.ect was created in 2014 by Jessi Ochse and Kayleigh Moss from Resonance Cosplay in Port Elizabeth in order to test the
waters. The response was greater than expected and so Con.ect was re-launched at a larger venue in 2015 in order to cater to the many pop culture fans who wished to attend the convention. Con.ect is run exclusively by volunteers, who are primarily students and professionals. They are drawn together by their passion for popular culture and gaming.
No other conventions of this nature have been hosted in Port Elizabeth or the Eastern Cape, which makes it unique. Con.ect 2015 attracted vendors from across South Africa and approximately 700 entry tickets were sold over the course of the convention. This event saw a 500% increase in attendance from 2014. At least 1000 people are expected to attend this year. For more info go to http://con-ect.co.za.

Local talent to join The Soil on stage REPORTER
The Soil, from left, are Luphindo Ngxanga, Theo Matshoba (who stood in for vocalist Buhle Mda for six months) and Ntsika Ngxanga. Buhle will be making an official comeback and both ladies will be on the tour.
THIS year The Soil, the most soughtafter a capella group, is on the road with the #Experience TheSoil National Tour and they are coming to Port Elizabeth. In 2013 Native Rhythms took The Soil on a nation-wide tour which started Campus Tour. The popularity of the tour soon gave birth to The Reflections Tour in 2014 and was subsequently followed by The Nostalgic Moments in 2015 taking from their award-winning and platinum selling album. The Soil invites interested vocalists who will be carefully selected to post their videos on Facebook singing their songs and for The Soil fans to decide and choose the one they believe is the best fitted to open for the group. The winner(s) will share the stage with The Soil and also get a chance to collaborate with the group on one song. Above all, each city and event will have a local act selected to join in the #ExperienceTheSoil Tour. The competition is now open to all Eastern Cape artists who want to join The Soil at the Orient Theatre in East London on August 5 and Feather Market Hall in Port Elizabeth on August 6. “Eastern Cape has two shows because Bloemfontein sold out in no time and so many people missed out on the opportunity to see us in that particular province. We listen to the masses and we will visit East London and Port Elizabeth…and who knows, we might just go back to Free State,” stated the group.

The Eastern Cape leg of the tour is also a special moment as Buhle, the group’s female vocalist will be making an official comeback. Theo Matshoba has been filling in for her for the past 6 months while she was on a sabbatical break. Both ladies will be on the tour and Theo resumes the role of being the face of the #ExperienceTheSoil tour. The whole tour is about giving new talent an opportunity to get into the in-
dustry and perform with a world-renowned group, which is what Theo did for 6 months. As part of the initiative, The Soil is giving 50 people an opportunity to attend a workshop that will take place at Feather Market Hall on August 6. Workshops will run from 2pm until 3pm and will include tips on songwriting, stage-performance, branding and basic experience as artists in South Africa and abroad.
These workshops are free to the first 50 people to register on The Soil’s Facebook page and they get complimentary tickets to attend the Port Elizabeth Show. Both the PE and East London shows will start at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at Computicket at R150 per person and at the door for R180. For further enquiries, contact Velile on 011 447 5199 or Velile@nativerhythms.co.za.

Kasi Craft Beer launched in Nelson Mandela Bay REPORTER Kasi Craft Beer has recently been launched in Port Elizabeth.
A CELEBRATION took place in Nelson Mandela Bay after months of hard work turned creative ideas between two local entrepreneurs into a potential thriving business. Kasi Craft Beer was launched by Siyabulela Mandla, of the 469 Bar Lounge, and Karl Schlaphoff, of the Dockside Brewery. The collaboration showcases not only the great business minds but also the diversity of craft beer culture in Nelson Mandela Bay. The collaboration has brought a unique and authentic flavour to the forefront. The launch incorporated the story and viewing at Dockside Brewery where Kasi Craft Beer is brewed, which was then followed by a tour ending at the 469 Bar and Lounge in Motherwell. Here patrons were welcomed by an infusion of music from the decks and African drums. All this was accompanied by traditional African cuisine and Kasi Craft beer. Township tourism contributes a large portion to the unique attractiveness of a destination and the Kasi Craft local brew to be enjoyed at a local establishment adds great options to township tours. In addition, the process of the craft beer being brewed can be toured at Dockside Brewery who have moved to their exciting new premises at The Grand Hotel. “From humble beginnings I am proud to be the first to lead the way in a Kasi Craft beer brewed in Nelson Mandela Bay showing that great ideas and hard work pays off. I hope to entertain many locals and visitors at 460 Bar-Lounge in the near future,” Mandla shares. CEO of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Mandlakazi Skefile, says, “We are excited to collaborate with the

business owners to market their products that will entertain both tourists and locals as this adds value to the tourism offering of the destination. “Township tourism has enormous potential to stimulate local economy and we congratulate the entrepreneurs for recognizing and harness-
ing the opportunity in the destination.” Dockside Brewery spokesperson, Jane Schlaphoff, confirmed, “We are enjoying the collaboration where we are creating a beer for the people by the people. We made a beer, listened to the feedback and then we launched Kasi Craft.”
Young talent can now audition for Clover Showtime Awards Revue REPORTER AUDITIONS for the 2017 edition of Nelson Mandela Bay’s top annual family show, the Clover Showtime Awards young talent development revue, will be held at the Charlo Primary School Hall on August 6 and 7. The show, titled “A Grand Night for Singing”, will run, as was the case last year, in the Little Theatre from Monday, January 23, to Sat-
urday, January 28, next year with all performances in theatre seating style. It will be presented in collaboration with the PE Musical and Dramatic Society. The Junior Clover Awards Ceremonies will be on January 23 for high schools and on January 25 for primary schools, with the main awards ceremony taking place on January 27. All ceremonies will begin at 7pm. Rehearsals will start in early Oc-
tober of this year, concurrent with the week of the school holidays and continue over all subsequent weekend afternoons, until December, then cease for resumption on January 3. This revue, as the previous ones, has been devised and written by executive producer Bob Eveleigh, who created the Showtime concept 26 years ago while he was the Arts Editor of the Evening and Weekend Post, who is once more joined by the same production team as 2016’s
The Pleasure of Your Company. The team will be seeking a fully multicultural core cast of ten performers, essentially within the usual Showtime development ages of 14 to 22 years, with as many singers, actors and dancers as possible included, as well as a dance troupe of ten, who will be required to sing in ensemble numbers in the show. The combined song-books encompass standards like “Bewitched”, “Blue Moon”, “Thou Swell” and hits from stage musi-
cals like “Oklahoma!”, “Carousel”, “The King and I”, “Me and Juliet” and “The Sound of Music”. On August 6, starting at 1:30pm, auditions will commence for singers and actors. On August 7, from 2:30pm, they will return, together with specialist dancers for the movement and dance try-outs. For further info about the show and auditions, contact Bob Eveleigh on 083 452 7556 or e-mail beveleigh@centrestage.co.za.
World première of ‘His Day is Done’ staged in Bay GIVING voice to the many musical languages of our world is quite an easy task if we treat each as separatist, purist or in isolation. But what happens when we merge and bridge gaps between them? When classical meets jazz, and Africa meets the Americas; orchestral meets jazz, solo meets choir - harmonies collide and resolve - then we have something exciting, something new, something as diverse as humanity itself. “His Day is Done”, composed and conducted by Prof Ed Sarath, does exactly that. The work, with music by Sarath and the words of a poem by Maya Angelou dedicated to Nelson Mandela, will receive its world première right here in Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday, August 7, at 3pm in the NMMU
South Campus Auditorium. The 75-piece ensemble will showcase many the of the Bay’s foremost teachers, performers, and community musicians alongside the NMMU Symphony Orchestra. Prof Sarath is Director for the Centre for World Music Performance Studies as well as the Programme in Creativity and Consciousness Studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA. As a teacher, scholar, composer, performer, recording artist and speaker, he is an ardent advocator for diversity in music education as a tool for social justice and social cohesion. “I look forward to sharing this music as a means of forwarding Angelou’s and Mandela’s message—and that of all the world’s peace emissa-
ries—at this moment in human history when the need for unifying and uplifting voices has never been more urgent,” he said. The prelude to “His Day is Done” will feature Prof Ed Sarath with the 2Tone band and trombonist, Kyle du Preez, in exploring South African Jazz. The music will include pieces by the former NMMU Jazz Lecturer, Errol Cuddumbey, as well as numerous other well-known SA jazz composers. Tickets cost R50 for adults and R30 for pensioners and scholars and are available at the NMMU Music Department. For more details, contact Nicky on 041 504 4235 or Gareth on 079 246 8199. – REPORTER

McKay’s Mighty Minnie makes tracks REPORTER TRACY McKay has joined the motor-racing world once again after a 20 year break behind the wheel of her ‘Mighty Minnie’. She used to race Regional Clubman Saloons from early 1992 to 1997, when she won the class D Championship in her 1600cc Golf. McKay stopped racing when she qualified as an Industrial Engineer. “But my interest in motorsports has been there since a very young age. When my mother met my father he was racing stock cars in Natal, and I attended my first race meeting when I was 3 months old,” she said. Her father and her boyfriend, Deon, were the deciding factors that started her racing again. “We attended a race meeting last year as spectators. The two of them got to talking about if they built a car it would be a Mini, because my father did his mechanic apprenticeship on Minis and owned a few Minis, and the first car Deon owned was a Mini,” McKay said. Her daughter, Tamryn, named her new racing vehicle the ‘Mighty Minnie’. She finished last in each heat in Round 4, but this has not discouraged her from going back. “Someone has to be last, right? But I went out and had a jol! It was so much fun being on the track again, competing in the Historics and Classics Club championship,” she said. Her advice for someone who wants to take up a new challenge? “Just go for it. If it is what you really want to do, focus on your goal with determination and drive. We are masters of our own destiny and only you can make it happen.” Tracy will be in action at the next Regional Race Day at Aldo Scribante on July 30. Tracy McKay (insert) is back in the racing game after 20 years with her new ‘Mighty Minnie’.

STOP CRYING, STOP WORRYING BECAUSE WITH MAMA SAMANTHA ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
My name is Sanirisiwe 30 yrs old, testifing about the miracles that MAMASAMANTHAperformed in my life. I am one of the people who lost a lot of money to the so called doc-tors but when I read the testimony Larry wrote about MAMA SAMANTHA. I decided to try again called MAMA SAMANTHA and she told me all be fine with me if only I believe in her. My life was a mess, I had a lot of debts, working for 5years with no money that time my boyfriend had left me she used a crystal ball eye and gave me a magic ring which helped me. My boyfriend came back and now I am financially stable, my court cases were dismissed and I live happily now. CAN PAY AFTER JOB IS DONE Cell 063 800 8531 X1RFDNNM-PX080616
A SPECIAL PRAYER OF SUCCESS Before I met this powerful spiritual LADY AMELIA happiness was rare in my family. My life was filled with cheating, sick kids and bad luck. I tried many healers and remedies but all failed. I saw a testimony on local TV about and old couple, LADY AMELIA had united. I paid R200 consultation. She accurately read my fortune and told me my problems and showed me my enemies in water.
She performed a one day special prayer for me.
Reliable and prompt service
She cleansed me, united me with my husband, gave me a special ring for luck and love crystals. Today I have a big business and my son enjoys a promotion. Thanks LADY AMELIA for fixing my marriage, luck, protecting me from my enemies, health and solving sexual problems. She saved my son from drugs and alcohol.

Test driving one of only fifty: The Opel Adam S
The ADAM S is designed with performance in mind, and the external styling is not only aimed at aesthetics but also benefiting performance. I HAVE been test driving vehicles for almost 10 years – and I cannot recall ever driving one of which there are only 50 being sold in the country. So I was quite privileged to spend a week with the sassy, sporty Opel Adam S and it was a week spent trying – very hard – not to break any laws for speed violations. So while I could not enjoy the delightful run it makes from 0 to 100km in 8.5 seconds, or see if it can actually reach the top speed of 210km/h, on any part of my mom’s taxi route, I could experience some of it while taking it out on the highway – and what a joy to hear the roar of pleasure the Adam S generates when you put your foot to the pedal. In February Opel introduced the range-topping Adam S to South Africa. It completes the Adam line-up and is aimed at attracting young buyers who want a compact car with a performance-oriented personality. Exterior The test vehicle’s racy form was complemented by its red colour with red-stitched leather accents all over the interior. Not to mention the red calipers clearly visible between the spokes of the 18-inch ‘Propeller’ wheels. The Adam S is available in three distinctive ‘Twisted’ colour combos: Saturday White Fever, Shiny Rock and Red ‘n’ Roll. The first two have contrasting red roof and pillars, while the last has a slate grey upper section. The Adam S is designed with performance in mind, and the external styling is not only aimed at aesthetics but also benefiting performance. While the roof-coloured rear wing is not only aesthetically creating the sporty look, it is also functional as it adds 100 Newtons of rear downforce at speed (according to Opel). A deeper front spoiler performs a similar role to the wing, adding downforce as speed increases to maintain the front/rear aerodynamic balance. Performance tyres measuring 225/35/18 are fitted to the Adam S. Interior Having given it the mom’s taxi route test, I simply cannot not speak about the boot and cupholders. The boot is surprisingly spacious – not roomy – but big enough for four grocery bags and a school bag or two - at a push.
The back-seat passengers may not have a lot of legroom but even they have cupholders cleverly incorporated in the frame of the seat. What fascinated me was the fact that even though this car is not your typical mom’s taxi (being a three-door sporty car), there was ISOFIX Child Seat Anchorage on the back seat for children’s car seats. Most noticeable, and something that the real sporty car enthusiast will enjoy are the Recaro sport seats, which not only look sporty, but hug the occupants all the way from the lower thighs to the shoulders and help them to stay in position when the Adam S gets driven enthusiastically. Standard equipment includes climate control, height and reach adjustable steering column, power windows, cruise control and a split/foldable rear seat for added practicality. Smart technology such as Advanced Park Assist, Side Blind Spot Alert, Intellilink and Siri Eyes Free are some of the technologically advanced features that one would rarely find in a small car. Engine The aim of this column is not to go too much under the bonnet – if at all. But the type of person who is interested in this type of a car would like to know the specifics under the bonnet so, for their benefit, I will give the info as supplied by Opel on these technicalities. According to Opel, with 110kW and 220Nm delivered by its turbocharged 1,4-litre Ecotec engine, and an unladen mass of 1 178kg, the Adam S delivers specific output exceeding 74 kW/litre. The Adam S also has a stiffer front anti-roll bar and springs for improved driving dynamics. In addition, Opel has upgraded the brakes to the same specification as the previous-generation Corsa OPC - this means front discs measuring 308mm in diameter, grabbed by calipers with increased pad area. The torsion beam rear axle has also been made more rigid, which along with the uprated springs provides sharper handling. With a wheelbase of just 2 311mm, the Adam has always been exceptionally agile, but the Adam S changes direction almost telepathically. The powerplant boasts a host of high-tech features to achieve its 110kW/220Nm headline numbers, yet at the same time returns

fuel consumption figures of just 5.9 litres/100 km with CO2 emissions of just 139 grams/km. The engine meets stringent Euro 6 emission standards, and is equipped with Stop/Start Eco setting. The Opel Adam S reaches 100km/h in 8.5 seconds and will continue on to 210km/h. But it also impresses with great elasticity: it makes the transition for 80 to 120km/h in fifth gear in just 7.9 seconds. For the ultimate in feel and feedback, the S allows the driver to deactivate the Electronic Stability Programme at the press of a button for even more spirited driving in, say, a circuit environment.
– once we all got inside. The high-tech features and sound system are great for those for whom in-car entertainment is important, not to mention the hightech safety features, which often make me wonder how many years are we away from cars driving themselves without the driver having to think about anything other than putting his foot on the accelerator. And for those who like the thrill of a car which moves and roars when you put your foot to the pedal, this car is certainly a delight and will never be dull to drive – even on the mom’s taxi route.
And in my own words . . . It is a fun, funky and sporty car to drive and despite being a bit cramped for a mom and two children with plenty of school bags – and the inconvenience of only being a three-door, we enjoyed every minute of riding in this car
As part of Opel’s Complete Care package Adam S comes with a standard five-year or 120 000km warranty, roadside assistance, and three-year or 60 000km service plan. The Opel Adam S will cost you R330 000 (Launch price in February 2016)

The interior reflects the fact that sportiness is part of the DNA of the Adam S.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
We test the Mazda CX5 THE SUV market is certainly booming all over the world and in South Africa, and customers are faced with many models to choose from with all the manufacturers having one or even two to three models on offer in this competitive market. Mazda last year launched its refreshed midsize SUV, the CX-5 in South Africa. And with a range of models from R350 500 to R513 700 there is surely a CX-5 to suit many tastes and pockets. Mazda’s trump card is that even the cheapest model in the range boast quite a lot of luxury specs as standard and cannot be regarded as an entry level SUV at all. The model test driven for this week’s Express on Wheels was, however, the highest spec model in the range – the Mazda CX-5 2.2 DE Akera AWD – a diesel model with automatic transmission selling for R513 700. While this may seem pretty steep, it still offers good value for money, compared to some of its competitors. But I would however strongly suggest that prospective buyers do have a look at the entry models in this range with their pretty nifty high specs.
Design The new look of the CX-5 is very attractive and will appeal to both female and male buyers – as it doesn’t have too much of a muscular look with its pretty curves in all the right places. On the Individual and Akera models, newgeneration adaptive LED headlamps and gunmetal 19-inch alloy wheels are introduced and with its bold grille it exudes a premium look.
Interior Inside the CX-5, one of the most noteable upgrades is the high-tech full-colour MZD Connect infotainment system. Satellite navigation is standard on the Individual and Akera models and optional on Active and Dynamic models. The touchscreen had me baffled at first, since it did not seem to work at times and the audio system could only be adjusted with the joystick or steering wheel controls. We soon realised that the touchscreen only works when the car is stationary – probably as a safety precaution.
The interior is stylish and leaves one with a feeling of luxury and supreme comfort. For those who need to be connected at all times there are two USBs and an auxiliary jack in an open stowage space underneath the centre console. Another upgrade is an electronic parking brake which replaces the conventional handbrake. Other high spec features that are standard on the top of the range models are, amongst others, keyless entry, full leather and heated seats, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, climate and cruise control, automatic lights and wipers, a self-dipping rear-view mirror, parking sensors and a reverse-view camera. Mazda has also introduced a new stop/ start system as standard across the range, as well as the Smart Idle Stop System (SISS). According to Mazda, the stop/start system saves up to 10% on fuel consumption in heavy traffic and urban areas. Although I was very hesitant at first about using the stop/start system, it was so quick to respond and reliable that I soon got used to it. Driving my first car in my varsity days, a VW Jumbo Golf with a throttle, and many stalls at traffic intersections struggling to get my cold car started, with traffic backing up behind me, has made me rather averse to having the engine switch off when stopping. So, in the beginning I found myself holding my breath to see if the Mazda CX-5 would actually start again as quickly as I needed it to – and it did not disappoint. I also soon learnt that by simply lifting my foot slightly of the brake – just a little bit and just before I knew I would need to get going – the car started again. And you don’t have to worry about the vehicle rolling backwards with your foot not fully on the brake as there is no roll-back thanks to the Hill Launch Assist. A bit of technical info is that Mazda says the CX-5’s stop/start system is unique in that it doesn’t rely on the engine to restart via the same process as when you start the car up. SISS restarts the engine through combustion. Mazda’s system injects fuel directly into the cylinder while the engine is stopped and ignites it to generate downward piston force
The Mazda CX-5. INSERT: Inside the CX-5, one of the most noteable upgrades is the high-tech full-colour MZD Connect infotainment system. when you remove your foot from the brake. Its boot capacity of 403 litres is adequate for a family vehicle and there is good rear legroom. The fact that the rear backrest can split and be folded forward in a 40/20/40 configuration offers a lot of versatility as it not only allows for the loading of wide, bulky objects, but will allow two passengers to sit on either side of a long object.
Driving I liked the performance of this car and the overall handling and agility. We took it out on the open road to Port Alfred for a day trip and the CX 5 offered a comfortable, surefooted ride, with plenty of power for overtaking. It’s also the perfect vehicle to drive with on Port Alfred’s shockingly bad roads. The steering wheel, apart from offering the convenience of controls for the audio system, also has a nice feel between the fingers. Only disappointment was the rather high fuel consumption of 9.3L per 100km (over a period of a week with both open road and town driving), which is rather thirsty for a diesel vehicle which was not even driven enthusiastically. Mazda, however, claims an average fuel consumption of 5.9 L/100 km. The 2.2-litre 4-cylinder SkyActiv-D engine is quite refined and not as hard on the ears
as diesel engines are known to be. It produces 129 kW and 420 Nm (at 2 000 rpm) and is wellmatched to the six-speed transmission, which changes very smoothly, even when putting one’s foot down to overtake on the open road. The model line-up features 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, as well as two versions of the 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. It offers both manual and automatic transmissions. A safety measure on the high spec Individual and Akera models includes Lane Keep Assist (LKA) which operates at speeds over 65km/h. It has six built-in SRS airbags, including front, side (front) and curtain (front and rear). Other safety features include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) incorporating Traction Control System (TCS), ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Lewis Hamilton, HungaroKing THE Hungarian Grand Prix marked the theore-tical midpoint of the 2016 season. Yet, after ten races, a singular point was all that divided Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in the championship fight. Throughout the weekend’s practice sessions and qualifying it was Rosberg who looked most comfortable. But it wasn’t long before Hamilton got the drop on his pole-starting teammate and seized the lead of the race. Although it was as dominant a drive from Hamilton he always maintained a big enough gap to Rosberg to ensure his fifth win around the Hungaroring.
The Silver Arrows held a distinct pace advantage over the rest and were hardly challenged by third placed Daniel Ricciardo. The Red Bull driver threatened Rosberg’s second place by momentarily closing the gap to 4.5 seconds in the second half of the race but couldn’t make any further impression. The embattled Ferraris ran better in race trim but still fell short of reaching the podium. Sebastian Vettel, who started fifth, closed to within half a second of Ricciardo as the race drew to its ends but was unable to overtake on the notoriously difficult Hungaroring. Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen were
embroiled in a fight for fifth towards the end of the race. Verstappen managed to hold off Raikkonen who started 14th after a timing error on Saturday. However, the manner in which Verstappen defended his position was questionable, at best. In trying to keep Raikkonen at bay Verstappen changed direction twice which is prohibited under FIA regulations. While stewards saw no cause for investigation the young Red Bull driver’s actions was met with scorn on social media. Raikkonen eventually brought the Ferrari home in sixth and set the fastest lap of the race.
Although a fair distance adrift Fernando Alonso scored some points for the McLaren in a legitimate seventh place ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Toro Rosso and the Williams of Valterri Bottas. The final point went to a rather anonymous Nico Hulkenberg as the only retirement of the day came in the form of Jenson Button whose McLaren suffered an oil leak. Lewis Hamilton landed a hammer blow as he not only secured a fifth win at the Hungaroring but with it took over the lead in the driver’s championship. By successfully overcoming a 43- point deficit it also strikes a significant psychological blow to Nico Rosberg. Remarkably, the battle for championship glory is far from over and has all the possibility of turning on its head once more as ten races still remain on the 2016 calendar.

REPORTER SOUTH African fuel users are set to reap a welcome benefit courtesy of Rand strength and oil weakness in the wake of the United Kingdom’s vote to exit the European Union. This is according to the Automobile Association (AA) which was commenting on unaudited mid-month data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF). “After initially weakening in the wake of the UK referendum result in late June, the Rand has since strength-

ened steadily,” the AA said. “At the same time, international petroleum prices have retreated on concerns over economic uncertainty following the vote. As a result, fuel prices are showing favourable gains.” The mid-month data sees petrol poised for a drop of up to 83 cents a litre, with diesel set for a reduction of 45 cents and illuminating paraffin around 42 cents a litre down. “Despite this positive picture, predicting the likely position at the end of July remains complex,” the Associa-
tion commented. “The underlying trend has been towards higher fuel prices over the past months as the Rand weakened and international oil prices climbed. It is not yet clear what effect recent events will have on this trend, and it would be premature to assume it has been disrupted.” the AA commented. “Accordingly, we advise motorists to maintain a conservative approach, and not take on additional expenses in the expectation of sustained fuel price drops,” the Association concluded.

At last – Lions show they can roar! THE best kind of rugby match is one that keeps spectators on edge with seesaw movement almost to the very death. Such was the Super Rugby game that kept a wildly excited Ellis Park crowd for three-quarters and more of the Lions’ 42-25 defeat of New Zealand’s Crusaders last weekend. It wasn’t clinical but it came at times close to being so – a cut and thrust affair that has donated coach Johan Ackermann’s lads a strong chance of taking yet another step forward – at home ground Ellis Park, what’s more – in the Super Rugby semi-finals this coming weekend. It’s a chance that may well put them in this year’s Super Rugby final. What an incredible seesaw battle it was! Unbelievably the game’s second minute had not yet reached completion before the Lions were on the scoreboard. In the sixth minute they were taking another chunk out of it with flyhalf Elton Jantjies supplying the conversion to give the home-side a 12-0 lead, and then 15-0 with a penalty in the 14th minute. Then at last the Crusaders got on the board with a penalty and a converted try to close the gap. But not content, on the very point of the whistle signalling halftime, the Lions’ Malcolm Marx scored and again Jantjies supplied the conversion bonus. Halftime 22-10. At 28-20 it seemed to be all over bar the shouting. But no, not content with things as they stood, Jantjies sends over a perfect drop-goal. But the Crusaders come hammering back; in fact, for a considerable period of the second half Crusaders began to play with vigour that had the Lions defending desperately. With 20 minutes remaining – miraculously, it seems – the Crusaders are back in the game with the home-side’s lead reduced to 28-20. Anybody’s game!
S P F
But somehow from the very depth of their despair the Lions began once more to roar. This was it. Somehow managing to put an end to a period of poor, sloppy defence, the Lions came roaring back with two fine tries. The first came from Ruan Combrinck, closely followed by a Ross Cronje touchdown. The smile on Ackermann’s face said it all. They were home and dry now, heading for the home straight and a memorable 42-25 victory. At the other end of the scale, the Sharks flattered only to deceive. When last did a team in any major tournament fail to score a single point at its quarterfinal stage? Be that as it may, the team’s fearsome black and white emblem must surely be blushing at its ineptitude this year. Having snuck into this year’s Super Rugby showpiece through the backdoor, so to speak, their muddled – indeed, feeble – effort in going down 41-0 to the Hurricanes in Wellington could only be described as a catastrophe. Everything went wrong almost from kickoff. Ironic indeed that it should follow an avowed intention this very week to put KZN rugby back on the map. Even more ironic that this fiasco should coincide with the return to rugby of Gary Teichman, who is set to take over the coaching reins. It’s a mammoth task even for one as talented and dedicated as the former Springbok captain. A mammoth task awaits the great No 8, but if there’s one person who can put the province’s rugby wrongs to rights it could be Teichman – not only a gentleman but a rugby scholar to boot. So here’s the line-up for a tantalising weekend ahead: Lions v Highlanders at Ellis Park; Hurricanes v Chiefs in Wellington. Good luck to the four of them! Weird quotes? You’ll have to wait till next week!

Charity inner city obstacle race excites MICHAEL ZOETMULDER PRE-REGISTRATION for the 2016 edition of the Urban Run – Nelson Mandela Bay has been very impressive ahead of this unique Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) backed charity obstacle run through the heart of the Port Elizabeth CBD. The event is expected to raise over R150 000 for the Northern Area’s Cleary Estate Cheshire Home and the Reach for a Dream Foundation as close on 1 000 participants will be expected to Tackle the City on Saturday, September 10 (Kids Urban Run and MTB Race), and Sunday, September 11 (adult MTB). This unique event was started in 2011 as a means of bringing communities back to the CBD to witness Urban Renewal and raise money for charity in a fun obstacle run through the city. To date the Urban Run participants have raised over R800 000 for charity and this year the Urban
Run event also took place in East London. Children between the ages of 6-12 years get to tackle a 3km Urban Run route from the Donkin Reserve with around 6 obstacles whilst those 13 years and older tackle an 8km urban route with over 15 obstacles which will see them running past, through, under and over some of the CBD’s historic and newly revamped areas. A 15-20km MTB route through the CBD is also being planned for this year’s event. As is a tradition of the Urban Run, all participants are required to raise a minimum of R100 for charity with the highest fundraisers being in line for some awesome prizes this year. Four Batches separate the participants: Dawlers (R100-R149 raised), Rustlers (R150-R249), Beseechers (R250-R499) and Altruists (R500+) with each receiving an increasingly impressive goody bag and this being their start batch on race day (see website for details). Those qualifying as Altruists this year will receive entry into the Tavcor Auto Sales VIP Zone over race weekend with free snacks, drinks and sports massages. See www.urbanrun.co.za for online registration and other information on how to be a part of this fun event backed by the MBDA and a host of obstacle and water point sponsors with entertainment sponsored by Caltex Eastern Cape. Some of last year’s Urban Run participants get to grips with one of the obstacles.

Join in the foolishness of a winter MTB race CYCLING enthusiasts looking to have some fun on their mountain bikes this winter should not miss the Foolish Frenzy Day/ Night MTB Race on August 30. The race will take place at Norm Hudlin in Kragga Kamma. Riders can enter solo or in a relay team and are challenged to see who can complete the most laps in 4 hours. For the balloon lap, each rider gets a balloon to attach to their bikes. Those who complete the lap without the balloon popping, gets a bonus lap added to their total. This race is a great opportunity to train for
the Trans Baviaans and is also spectator friendly, offering a bonfire for non-competitors to relax around. There will be beverages and food for sale at the venue. Riders are required to bring their bike likes as the race will take place from 4pm to 8pm – with two hours of daylight and two hours of night. Registration will commence at 2:30pm and entry costs R140 per rider. Entry forms are available online. For more info, go to www.mountainevents.co.za/ events/12.
