WILL A 60% CHANCE OF RAIN IMPACT ON VOTER TURNOUT TODAY?
The Battle for the Bay is on Danny Jordaan (ANC)
Athol Trollip (DA)
vvss ROSLYN BAATJIES
A since 1994.
T 7am today 4 669 voting stations in 715 wards will open across the Eastern Cape for 12 hours of voting in what many say are the most hotly contested elections
In Nelson Mandela Bay a total of 19 parties will be contesting in the elections. Only seven of these will be contesting in all 60 wards of the metro. And while all eyes are on the big battle between current executive mayor Danny Jordaan, of the ANC, and the DA’s mayoral candidate Athol Trollip, some experts say, that with the support for the ANC and DA being very close in the Bay, the battle could be very dependent on which way the undecided vot-
ers decide to cast their vote, if at all. With a weather forecast of a 60% chance of rain for today, voter turnout could also have a huge impact on the final result. The latest Ipsos poll by the eNCA television channel issued last week, indicated that support for the DA in Nelson Mandela Bay had grown by 2 per cent to 44%, while support for the ANC had also grown by two percentage points to 30%. Support for the EFF was stable at 6%. The ANC, however, had the biggest negative sentiment (50%), followed by the EFF (43%), while the DA had the best positive sentiment (60%). According to the poll it is expected that around 90% of the registered voters will be voting. The Ipsos poll comprises 2 500 people in the metro of whom 500 are phoned weekly for a 5-minute interview.
And while both the DA and ANC have pulled out all the stops bringing the big cannon in for the battle of the Bay, the smaller parties are also confident that they will be able to win at least 70% of the seats. Mongameli Bobani of the UDM is confident that he will be the next mayor of the metro and that his party will win 70% of the metro council’s 120 seats. “We are going to win and the ANC will have to share with the DA,” said Bobani. The United Front of the Eastern Cape (UFEC) is also convinced that they will have good results in the election. Mkhuseli Mtsila, UFEC spokesperson, said their target is 30 seats. “We are aiming at 30 seats; 15 ward councillors and 15 councillors on the proportional list. Prof. Joleen Steyn-Kotze, political analyst
of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, told Llewellyn Prince of Die Burger, that it will be about the bread and butter issues for voters and that the undecided voters could be a determining factor in the metro which has in the past years been in an administrative crisis and where factionalism in the ANC has impeded service delivery. She said the high unemployment rate, lack of housing and high crime rate will also play a major role in how voters will vote. Steyn-Kotze said that Danny Jordaan has in the past year “tried to put a clean administration in place”. “The question is, however, if this is enough to win back the trust of alienated ANC voters and to win over new voters for the ANC,” said Steyn-Kotze.

BE HAPPY, YES U CAN HE IS BACK AFTER 5 YEARS OF SEPARATION
My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Ligan and Miss Jessica looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Ligan and Miss Jessica performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled! Like me, all clients I have been referring to him always got GUARANTEED RESULTS in a few days.

According to Steyn-Kotze, the DA has conducted an aggressive campaign from day one. “The question is whether the DA will be able to pull support from the traditional ANC support base.

Who are Danny and Athol? But who are the two central figures in the battle for Nelson Mandela Bay? Athol Trollip (52) was the sixth generation of the Trollip family who farmed on the family farm Mount Prospect outside of Bedford. He entered the world of politics in 1995 for the first time. Trollip, who grew up on the back of a Xhosa woman and who started speaking Xhosa and English at the same time, was chosen for the Amathole District Municipality in 1995. He was elected in 1999 as the Democratic Alliance’s provincial chairper-
son and joined the Eastern Cape legislature a year later. In 2002 he was chosen as the provincial leader and after 10 years in the legislature, he was elected as a member of parliament. He became the party’s leader in parliament and in 2012 lost this position to Lindiwe Mazibuko. In 2013 he returned to the party in the Eastern Cape and worked for the DA in their successful 2014 elections. Danny Jordaan (64), the ANC’s mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay, comes from a poor family who had to make use of the bucket system. He experienced two forced removals due to the Group Areas Act. The Fifa boss is one of seven sons and was born in North End. The family was later forced to move to Korsten and then to Bethelsdorp where there was no electricity or sanitation in their home.
After completing matric, Jordaan attended the University of the Western Cape where he, in the early 1970s, joined the South African Students’ Organisation (Saso) – an organisation which was started by Steve Biko. He then got involved in anti-apartheid activities. Jordaan also became a member of the United Democratic Front and after Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 he became chairman of the ANC in the Bay’s northern areas. After the elections in 1994 he was elected as a member of parliament, a position he held until 1997. After completing his studies, he returned to Port Elizabeth and worked as teacher at the Arcadia Secondary School. Thereafter he worked at Dower College for 20 years. .
Hoe minder kinders in skole, hoe minder onderwysers word in ’n provinsie benodig.

Eastern Cape positioned as energy manufacturing hub REPORTER A GROWING number of manufacturing opportunities are being created and sustained in the Eastern Cape due to the installation of power generation facilities ranging from wind farms to renewable energy and nuclear power. This according to Sandisiwe Ncemane, Coega Development Corporation (CDC) Business Development Project Manager – Energy Projects. She says that within the borders of the Eastern Cape, the CDC has identified eight wind farms, five existing and planned hydro power facilities, two open gas cycle turbines, two proposed biofuel plants, and one proposed nuclear plant at Thuyspunt, some 80 kilometres from the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). “The Coega IDZ has the space and the infrastructure to support nuclear, conventional and renewable energy projects,” Ncemane says. Furthermore, the localisation of manufacturing and maintenance is being supported by the CDC through six value offerings. The key value offerings identified by the CDC include nuclear component and advanced manufacturing, engaging with the industry, supplier development, human capital solution, labour management and infrastructure pro-
gramme implementation. One of the most important of the “value offerings” is ensuring that the Eastern Cape is represented in the relevant energy committees. According to Ncemane, the CDC is a member of the Nuclear Industry Association of South Africa, and plays a leading and proactive role in nuclear together with private and public sector institutions. Furthermore, the CDC has identified energy manufacturing sites with close proximity to the Port of Ngqura and a nuclear logistics network. Existing facilities will help the Coega IDZ attract manufacturers by providing economies of scale. For example, the DCD Wind tower facility in the Coega IDZ has an 80-ton crane which could be used to move other energy and advanced manufacturing–related components. “In addition, the CDC has identified sites for the potential establishment of nuclear fuel cycle production facilities, which could include recycling of spent nuclear fuel,” Ncemane adds. New entrants into the supply of components and services for the nuclear, renewable and conventional power plants are being supported by the CDC, which is already supporting new entrants into the manufacturing sector, in particular those which are black- and
women-owned enterprises. “The CDC has a proven track record in assisting with the commercialisation of newly developed home grown patents and technology, ensuring technology transfer,” she says. Skills are being identified and developed through the organisation’s systems for registering work-seekers and competency-based recruitment functionality. According to Ncemane, some 85% of the people trained through programmes facilitated by the CDC often find sustainable employment. The CDC also helps companies with the recruitment and management of staff, based on a Zone Labour Agreement which ensures fair and equal treatment of workers throughout the Coega IDZ. CDC project managers and engineers work closely with the port, rail and road agencies to ensure that there is logistics infrastructure to support the growth of power-based manufacturing and services in the IDZ.

“The magnitude of the Thyspunt project is underpinned by the socioeconomic spin-offs which, when translated to numbers give a clearer picture of what to expect on the ground. A typical nuclear plant, the size of that proposed for Thyspunt, will use 523 560 cubic metres of concrete, 66 000 tons of steel, 70 kilometres of piping, 480 kilometres of electric wiring and 130 000 electrical components,” adds Ncemane. “Potentially, 23 000 formal sector jobs will be created during the construction phase, which normally takes between five and seven years. These numbers are based on the normalised averages from analyses of the economic and employment impact of the construction of 23 nuclear plants in the USA and are calculated per megawatt of installed capacity. “Without any doubt the Eastern Cape – and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in particular – is on the brink of a power-driven industrial boom,” said Ncemane.

REPORTER THE Electoral Commission of South Africa and Accenture has launched a mobile application designed to provide voters with the electoral information ahead of the Municipal Elections taking place on August 3. Through the application, voters will be able to view their registration details and status, voting stations information, and navigate to their voting stations and view the results live during the elections. They will also be able to apply for a special vote and view application status, view their registered home addresses, celebrate their votes, share key election moments, view their candidates, set the notification preferences for results, read news and information on the election processes as they happen, and view their ward councillors. They will be able to view the Electoral Commission’s contact information and address, report the voting station issues, and follow the Electoral Com-
mission’s social media feeds on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with developments as they happen. The application is available to download on Google Play and App Store. “We are thrilled to introduce the mobile application together with Accenture Digital, one of Accenture’s business units. The application will make the voting information and process accessible to all voters, especially young people who will be taking part in the Municipal Elections for the first time this year,” said Dr Nomsa Masuku‚ Deputy Chief Electoral Officer for Outreach at the Electoral Commission. According to Libisi Maphanga, Chief Information Officer at the Electoral Commission, Statistics South Africa’s latest General Household Survey shows an increase in the number of South Africans accessing the Internet with the main driver being smartphones penetration, which stands at over 40%. “As a result of this growing trend, South Africans are demanding easy and personalised experiences whenev-
er they need them and in real time. I’m pleased to proclaim that we are now able to put voters first and provide them with these experiences,” he said. “At Accenture, we help Governments, State Owned Enterprises, Chapter 9 Institutions and private sector companies to leverage digital technologies and innovation to improve citizen and customer experiences,” said Livingstone Chilwane, Health and Public Services Managing Director at Accenture. “The Digital evolution is exposing customer-centricity and it is time to truly put the citizen experiences at the heart of the organisation. “Consumers are more demanding than before. Their expectations are a moving target. Building out the digital ecosystem to engage with citizens and consumers, is the primary vehicle to deal with this moving target. “This application is a great example of a progressive organisation, like the Electoral Commission, doing just that,” added Willie Schoeman, Managing Director Technology at Accenture.

REPORTER THE South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) would like to advise motorists that resurfacing will commence during the day on the East Bound carriage way (towards Grahamstown) tomorrow, Thursday August 4, between the Bramlin and William
Moffett interchanges. Reduced speed limits of 60km/h will be enforced. There will be no resurfacing on the East Bound carriage way until today between the Bramlin and Cape Road interchange but there will be lane restrictions in place, thus single lane traffic. However a single lane will be
open to traffic on the N2 at Bramlin Road off-ramp to Samantha Way. “Motorists are asked to adhere to the speed limit to keep workers safe, plan their trips accordingly and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL Southern Region’s Regional Manager.

IEC say they are ready for the elections in EC REPORTER TODAY, in the Eastern Cape Province, 4 669 voting stations in 715 wards opened at 7am and will close at 7pm. The voting hours have been shortened compared to National Elections because voter participation data from previous elections shows that fewer than 1% of voters cast their ballot after 7pm. Currently, the province sits at 3.3 million registered voters since the proclamation of Local Government Elections 2016. In the 2011 Municipal Elections the registered voters in the province were 3.1 million and since the 2000 elections, there has been an increase of 31.85% of registered voters. A total of 4 699 Presiding Officers, 4 802 Deputy Presiding Officers, 717 Area Managers and 18 666 Elections Staff has been recruited and trained to manage these elections. “The election staff at the voting stations have been trained to perform their duties with diligence, commitment and responsibility. It has also been emphasised that they should treat the electorate with respect and dignity - to practise impartiality and most importantly to manage the elections guided only by the legislation,” said Thamsanqa Mraji, Eastern Cape Provincial Electoral Officer. This year, there are 3 municipalities with mobile voting stations, namely the Sakhisizwe, Camdeboo and Amahlathi Municipalities. A total of 40 Parties and 166 Independents will be contesting the Municipal Elections in the Eastern Cape. The Buffalo City Metro has the shortest PR ballot paper compared to other metros countrywide with only 12 parties contesting the Elections. 19 Parties in the Nelson Mandela Metro will be contesting in these elections. Provincial candidates stand at 8 493, which is made up of 4 057 PR Candidates; 4 270 Ward Candidates and 166 Independents. There has been an increase since the 2011 Municipal Elections as the figure then was only 7 239. In this province, 71 111 voters have been approved for Special Votes while 46 881 will be visited at home and 24 230 will be able to visit voting stations on the Special Votes Days on August 1 and 2. “On security matters, to keep peace, law and order, the South African Police Service will deploy at least 2 SAPS members to all voting stations. On Special Vote Days, the SAPS have
committed to their members patrolling and accompanying election staff during home visits,” said Mraji. The IEC working together with SAPS regarding security also prioritised the voting stations that challenged the two Registration Weekend Events. “In terms of the Election Timetable the province is ready for Municipal Elections 2016,” Mraji adds. The Provincial Results Operations Centre is based at the ICC hotel in East London and was officially launched on July 31.
There are three types of ballots involved in the municipal elections and they are colour coded:
Ward Ballot Paper - this ballot will have a grey/white background and every voter will receive a ward ballot paper. Council PR Ballot Paper - this ballot will have a yellow background and every municipality will receive a Council Ballot Paper. Thirdly, a District Council PR Ballot Paper - this ballot will have a green background and every voter in a local municipality will also receive one.
Should a voter not appear on the voters’ roll for the voting district where they applied to register to vote, and have a barcode sticker in their identity document that was provided to them by the IEC when they applied to register to vote, they will be required to complete an MEC 7 form and will then vote normally,” Mraji said. Voters who were given a separate receipt of registration when they registered using a smartcard should bring this receipt with them. A voter does not need an address to vote in this election. In its ruling on June 14 of this year, the Constitutional Court ruled that the requirement that the voters’ roll contain addresses for voters was suspended for 2016 Municipal Elections. The Constitutional Court ruled that for all future elections the voters’ roll must contain the addresses of voters where these are reasonably and objectively available. “Subsequent to the Constitutional Court, the IEC is to ask all voters who visit a voting station on Election Day to fill out an address capture form if they don’t have an address on the voters’ roll. This will not affect the voting process,” Mraji said. Only after voting, will the voter be asked to complete an address form. Voters do not need a proof of address to vote, but they do need to be in possession of a valid official South African ID document, such as a green barcoded ID book, a Smartcard or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate. Local matric girls who attended their matric dance can now start entering our competition and stand a chance to win fabulous prizes. We don’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet, but there are some great prizes up for grabs this year. This year we are again looking for the matric girl who has the complete look to become our third Miss Matric Dance. Entrants will be judged on their overall look – including the dress, hair, make-up and accessories – so be sure to send a photo where the judges can clearly get the complete picture. A panel of judges will choose nine (9) finalists at the end of the competition. The judges will also choose 10 wildcard entries and the public will have to vote for their favourite wildcard, who will make up the 10th finalist for this year’s Miss Matric Dance. To enter matric girls must upload their matric dance photo on our Miss Matric Dance competition page, which can be found on our Facebook page (PE Express Newspaper). At the top of the page, click on the Miss Matric Dance tab, which will take you to the entry form where you can upload your photo and details. Ipi Ntombi musical not to be missed NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape Arts and Cultural Music lovers should come in droves to watch Westering High School’s presentation of the South African Musical “Ipi Ntombi” which is staged at the Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale from today, Wednesday 3, to Saturday 6 August.

The performance of “Ipi Ntombi” was a special request from headmaster Steward Hayward who as a young man saw the original production in 1974 when it premiered. “That first production left a lasting impression on me,” Hayward said. The story, penned by mother and daughter Bertha Egnos and Gail Lakiar, and premiered in 1974 is about a man leaving his spouse in the village to search for work in the place of gold. His darling follows him and they get married. When they return home the war erupts. This production has historical links with the province of the Eastern Cape. One of the original actors was Queenstown-born Margaret Mcingana who was otherwise known as Margaret Singana. The South African Music Award (SAMA) winner, better known as Lady Africa who is known for songs like “Hamba Bhekile” and “Mama Thembu’s
Wedding” shone after participating in the production that toured overseas. To ensure that the school presents the best quality production with its multitalented learners, they brought in one of the original cast members, Andy Chabeli from the Free State, to assist with the choreography and fine tuning of both song and presentation, including costume. Chabeli brought with him good memories of the city from the days he came here as a 23-year-old artist. “This city reminds me of old friends like Norman Ntshinga, (rugby great and actress) Thoko Ntshinga’s father, Fats Bookholane (actor), Ben Nomoyi (filmmaker and producer), members of the Serpent players and Oscar winners (Drs John Kani, Winston Ntshona and Athol Fugard),” said Chabeli about the great thespians of the city. The learners are assisted by an able production team of teachers with sound musical interpretation and stage presence. Lizel Feltham is the production manager and the production team is made up of Eddie Leroux and John Allen (music), Amanda Engelbrecht and Elbe Coetzee on vocal directions, Sibabalwe Ngewu (choreography) and Akhona Nkumanda as the director. Admission is R50 for adults and R30 for learners and pensioners.

Queen of the Marimba coming to the Bay COMBINING the scintillating sounds of winds and brass and the woody warmth of the marimba is definitely something not to be missed. The NMMU Wind Symphony presents “Marimba and Winds” conducted by Gareth Williams and featuring South Africa’s foremost classical marimbist, Magda de Vries. “As part of the wind symphony’s vision to engage students with professional musicians in a performance environment, we have been working on the concept with Magda for more than a year,” says Williams. The marimba is known as the “queen of mallet percussion”, but this could aptly describe Magda de Vries as well. Her graceful flair on stage and spontaneous enthusiasm and passion for music both on and off the stage make her one of South Africa’s most remarkable artists. Born in Nelson Mandela Bay and bringing with her extensive national and international performance experience, Magda has won numerous prestigious competitions both locally and abroad. Most recently she was nominated for a Kanna Award for Best Classical Music performance at the KKNK. Magda will perform among oth-

From the beautifully visceral melodies, through to a playful animated character in movement two, to driving ragtime rhythms in the finale - the piece explores intimately the entire sonic range of the marimba. The concert programme also includes Danzon No. 2 by Marquez, Holst’s First Suite for Military Band, with Mieke Struwig as clarinet soloist, and Persis by James L. Hosay, as well as a few surprise items. The wind symphony boasts some of SA’s finest young wind players, many of whom recently performed with the SA National Youth Orchestra in Cape Town, as well as taking part in ensembles and orchestras at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. “We are truly excited about this concert,” says Williams. “We have collaborated with Magda since 2010 and finally managed to find the right time for this piece. The audience can look forward to seeing a world class soloist perform in her hometown too, which is a treat not to be missed.” The performance will take place on August 14 at 3pm in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at the door at R50 for adults and R30 for pensioners, students and scholars. For more info call 041 504 4235 or email nbosman@nmmu.ac.za

PE’s Miss Earth finalist a champion for recycling PORT Elizabeth local, Adria van der Merwe, is one of the Miss Earth South Africa 2016 Regional Finalists. The Miss Earth South Africa campaign for 2016 is #WasteStopsWithME and the objective is to create an understanding of the problem and to highlight the importance of each individual’s impact. Van der Merwe is doing her Waste Project at Seyisi Primary School in KwaZakhele. Here, she teaches the children about the need for recycling and what waste consists of. She also teaches them that they can upcycle certain items from waste and create something new and exciting out of it. As a demonstration, she created pencil holders out of tins. Van der Merwe is currently a final year music student at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and a part-time modelling teacher at Extreme Models and Beauty. “I have entered the Miss Earth South Afri-
ca programme because I feel as though on such a prestigious platform I could definitely make a difference in the world. The environment is so important and we are busy destroying our planet. Our current generation has to stand together to make sure that we have a good and healthy planet for our future generations to live in,” said Van der Merwe. Recently, all of the finalists came together at Tsogo Sun Gold Reef City Theme Park in Johannesburg. The participants took part in an experiential tour of the Pikitup Southdale Depot so as to allow for a deeper understanding of waste and the journey of waste. Following this, they went on a tour of Johannesburg CBD, where the team was able to see hijacked buildings, illegal dumping, informal recycling depots and the challenges of waste. The Miss Earth South Africa 2016 winner will be announced September 8 at the Monte Casino Ballroom in Sandton. – REPORTER

The intervention was deemed necessary after delivery and supply chain analysis in the Metro by the Council, Provincial and National Governments re]LHSLK KLLW YVV[LK Z`Z[LTPJ JOHSSLUNLZ HɈLJ[PUN [OL ZTVV[O Y\UUPUN VM [OL Human Settlements Department in the Metro. The Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu, MEC for Human Settlements in the Eastern Cape Helen Sauls-August and the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Councillor Danny Jordaan signed an implementation protocol authorising the Housing Development Agency (HDA) to undertake the work on behalf of the three spheres of government.
What were the challenges? The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, supported by a technical team from the National Department of Human Settlements, the Provincial Department of Human Settlements, the HDA, the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) and the National Urban Reconstruction and Housing Agency (NURCHA) agreed to focus on the following challenges: à ® à ® à ®

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
We test Europe’s Car of the Year the new Opel Astra on and off the track THE first time I experienced the new Opel Astra was on the Aldo Scribante race track in Port Elizabeth with former South African motorsport racing champion Tschops Sipuka behind the wheel. This was part of an advance driving workshop by General Motors South Africa’s (GMSA) Women’s Council for female employees and female media members where Tschops gave advice on safe braking distances, tyre care and defensive driving. So, to put it mildly, the performance this hatchback is able to deliver was experienced first hand – and it’s not often that one gets to experience the test models on a racing track, with an expert driver behind the wheel. I then also got the opportunity to test the new Astra, which is the 2016 European Car of the Year, on the mom’s taxi route for a week for this week’s Express on Wheels. The test vehicle was the 1.4 T Sport with automatic transmission which retails at R374 000. The new Opel Astra, which was launched in SA in April, is available in a choice of three engines, manual and automatic gearboxes, and boasts class leading advanced driver assistance and safety systems. Opel says they have designed and engineered the new Astra, which is a little bit smaller from the outside than its predecessor, around four principles: efficiency, design, connectivity, and advance driver assistance and safety technology. Exterior The new Astra is more compact than before being 5cm shorter and a little bit lower in roofheight. Some aerodynamic improvements have been made to create a more athletic and agile look. Interior Despite its smaller outer dimensions, the clever designers at Opel have managed to increase
the interior space of the new Opel Astra. They have created more front headroom and rear legroom – and while the boot is a bit smaller than that of its predecessor – it is still more than adequate for a hatchback family car. One of the highlights of the new Astra is the fact that is it equipped with Opel’s award-winning IntelliLink system. The system comprises a touch screen with satellite navigation and an advanced infotainment interface. It offers Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, audio streaming, aux and USB ports. Sports models are equipped with electrically adjusted, heated front and rear leather seats. Ride The new Astra is offered with a choice of three state-of-the-art light and efficient turbo charged petrol engines – the 1.0 turbo, 1.4 turbo, and 1.6 turbo ECOTEC engines. As far as gearboxes go, it is available in five- and six-speed manual gearboxes, as well as a six-speed automatic transmission (for models with the 1.4 turbocharged engine). The automatic gearbox of the test model offered smooth transitions, but it does take away from the “sporty” drive that one would associate with a model with the name “Sport” in it. But, in my opinion, the automatic transmission still beats a sporty drive hands down, on the mom’s taxi route – and the car looks sporty that’s good enough for me as I hardly ever have the opportunity between speedbumps and traffic circles to test the vehicle’s 0 – 100km hours acceleration capabilities. The engine is, however, very willing and lively when you do open it up on the highway. It handles wonderfully and feels surefooted. Experiencing it around the corners of Aldo Scribante with Tschops behind the wheel, I can attest to its great roadholding capabilities when cornering – as there were times that I felt I was going to fall out of the door from the front passenger seat side – yet - the car remained on track
New Opel Astra has an athletic and agile look. PHOTOS:SUPPLIED and unflustered. Thanks to the Astra’s range of three turbocharged and direct injection ECOTEC engines, and the use of features like Start/Stop across the range, fuel efficiency is also quite impressive. The fuel consumption for the models in the range is stated between 4.3 litres/100 km and 6.1 litres per 100 km depending on the engine. Technology One of the reasons why the Astra is wearing the Europe Car of the year crown is its high tech equipment, not only for infotainment and performance but also for safety. The new Astra is available with the latest generation Opel Eye front camera whose functions include monitoring the IntelliLux LED Matrix System, Traffic Sign Assist (TSA); Lane Departure Warning (LDW) with Lane Keep Assist (LKA); Following Distance Indication (FDI); Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Low Speed Collision Mitigation Braking (LSCMB). Safety features include Active Emergency Braking which uses various inputs (such as camera sensor, brake pressure, vehicle speed) to calculate the probability of a frontal collision. Before the active emergency braking applies, the driver is warned by the forward collision alert. The New Astra is also available with Advanced Park Assist, with ultrasonic front and
rear sensors and Rear View Camera. The new generation Advanced Park Assist identifies suitable parking spaces and automatically parks the vehicle, without the driver touching the wheel. The driver just controls acceleration, deceleration and gear shifting. IntelliLux LED matrix lighting, is also a first in this segment for safer night time driving. Standard safety features include ABS (Antilock Braking System) and Traction Control, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Cornering Brake Control, Torque Vectoring by Brakes (ensures more agility and that the understeer tendency of the car is reduced and the car stays more neutral, even at a higher curve speed), Cornering Torque Control, Electronic Drag Torque Control, Brake Assist System (supports the driver in emergency braking situations by ensuring full master cylinder brake pressure is applied), Hydraulic Brake Assist Fade and Brake Disc Cleaning (which periodically removes contamination by applying very light pressure to the pads so they contact the discs without generating any noticeable brake torque.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Hamilton surges; Rosberg falters Max Verstappen. For several fleeting moments it appeared that Rosberg would have the pace to recover to second place. But the afternoon went horribly pear-shaped for the Merc driver. In an attempt to overtake Verstappen, he tried an Austria-esque move, which, again, didn’t pan out. It resulted in a 5-second penalty and despite being in the cockpit of the most dominant car on the grid, Rosberg slunk home in fourth place. After the Russian Grand Prix, Rosberg had a 43-point lead over Hamilton. But now we’ve seen a 62-point swing in Hamilton’s favour. There’s
THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO
Lions’ roar too much for Kiwis IT has probably – almost certainly – already happened. One of the stars of the Lions’ now somewhat famous 42-30 Ellis Park victory over New Zealand’s Highlanders last weekend is likely to be on the bench in the South African team for this Saturday’s Super Rugby final against the Hurricanes. We’re talking here, of course, of young Ruan Ackermann, son of coach Johan Ackermann, after his sterling performance at No. 8 in the Johannesburg semifinal, not being chosen. But how could it be otherwise? Room has to be found for captain, Warren Whiteley, who was unable to take his place at the back of the scrum due to injury from which he has now recovered. This, of course, has nothing to do with the father-son relationship between the Lions coach and the fast maturing young newcomer now playing anchor to the scrum at the Jo’burgbased club. Indeed, what a favourable position
to be placed in: the inspirational captain, Whiteley, once more fit and ready to take his place at No. 8 and Ruan Ackermann standing by if needed! What a game it was at Ellis Park last Saturday. Not many gave the Lions a chance of reaching this year’s Super Rugby final. They had, after all, first to dispatch the defending champions. But this they accomplished in fine style. Yes, they had in consecutive weeks beaten two of New Zealand’s top sides – first the Crusaders, then the Highlanders. ‘However, surely this time they would fall? But coach Ackermann’s men had different ideas, the entire team from No. 1 to 15 producing a feat that most bookmakers would have been happy to bet against. If they were good in the fortnight that preceded last Saturday’s match, they were superb in this testing Ellis Park battle. This was the dress-
only so many times you can accept losing points to a teammate before it becomes awkward. Yes, there is still half a season to go but this dramatic swing in points will do nothing to quell the questions over Rosberg’s psychological make-up. Red Bull Racing completed a satisfactory day at the office with their first double podium since the 2015 Hungarian GP. Ricciardo led home teammate Verstappen and ensured that Red Bull head into the month-long break ahead of Ferrari in the constructor’s standings. With 5th and 6th for Sebastian Vettel and Kimi
ing room message Ackermann sent his team out on: “You can do it, boys. Believe in yourselves – that’s what you guys must do!” He repeated the message at halftime when the Lions led 17-6. No one did better than Elton Jantjies whose contribution, as he led from the front, included a try, four conversions and three penalties. No surprise that the tough little flyhalf, with newly-cut hairstyle, also picked up the Man of the Match award. But he was just one of many who, for most of the match, had the New Zealanders in a tizzy. Indeed, without taking away anything from the visitors, one got the feeling the final score would have reflected an even wider winning margin if the local side had not, understandably, relaxed their pressure on the scoreboard accelerator when leading 42-16 with just seven minutes left on the clock. After all there was no chance of the New Zealanders catching them with just seven minutes remaining. There’s little doubt that this feeling by the Lions that they’d arrived safely at a winning destination, encouraged them to allow first Waisake Naholo and then replacement Joe Wheeler to score tries in quick succession, both converted by Lima
ALGOA STEEL
Sopoaga. Tactically and operating with great verve no one did better than Jantjies whose partnership with Faf de Klerk at halfback these days is consistently reaching new heights. This in turn enabled the entire backline, including fullback Andries Coetzee to function at top level, while the pack as a whole was nearly always one step ahead of their opponents. Indeed one had the feeling the New Zealanders were at times somewhat bewildered – as though they had not been properly briefed as to their opponents’ excellence.

AT the end of the Saturday qualifying session Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg was on top of the world after delivering a stunning lap, for pole, under extreme pressure. But the German’s euphoria on home soil was short lived as teammate Lewis Hamilton rocketed into the lead of the race right from the start. Hamilton went on to taste the sweet success of victory at the German Grand Prix while teammate Rosberg stumbled at home. Not only did Rosberg fall behind his teammate but also both Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and
Raikkonen, Ferrari have big concerns heading into the summer break and are now behind Red Bull not only on points but also in terms of raw pace. Nico Hulkenberg delivered the best Force India could hope for with seventh place while drive of the day belongs to McLaren driver Jenson Button in eighth. The Brit out-performed his highly acclaimed teammate Fernando Alonso who finished twelfth. It was easy to discern the great spirit of the two McLaren drivers from the radio comms between them and their pitwall. It hasn’t been easy for these two champions to endure this car but it does reveal a great deal of their passion for racing for still being as spirited as ever behind the wheel. Hamilton now leads the driver’s standings by 19 points. There is no doubt that Rosberg is a talented driver but the questions and doubts about his mental strength will be raised once more.

race honours. A mix of age groups is enjoying the mini Duathlon which offers a great introduction in the sport. Fifteen-year-old Dewald Klinkerburg got the better of dad, Pieter, last month with Marcelle Meyer grabbing third place and looking to build on that this month. In the girls’ mini Duathlon it was Micha Swans from 12-year-old Jayde Swans with Lauryn Swans in third place. The Kids’ Duathlon hasn’t been that well attended with just 11year-old Reghardt Klinkenburg and 10-year-old Josh Hufkie contesting it last month. Equally shy on entries has been the ocean swim discipline with just a handful each month but great performances from Aidan Baker and Lea Steyn last month. The 5km Beach Run is always great fun and was hotly contested last month by 9-year-old Tristan Marais with the top 4 placings all under the age of 12 years. In the kids’ 1.25km beach run, 4-year-old Kayleigh Marais and 9-year-old Jayson Archibald were the winners last month and look forward to keen participation in this discipline again. After Sunday there will be just one more Endurade Winter Series event (Sunday, September 4) before the Series makes way for Season 12 of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series which starts on Sunday, October 16, and remains Africa’s largest family beach event attracting hundreds of participants on alternate Sunday mornings to Hobie Beach. For further information see online www.zsports.co.za/winterseries with all first time participants required to register ahead of Sunday morning.
