Help needed with oiled penguins CARALEE DORFLING

T

HE battle continues to ease Algoa Bay’s oiled African penguins of their fate, and the public is being asked to assist in the rehabilitation process of this critically endangered species. So far 137 African penguins have been taken in for rehabilitation. The oil pollution is, according to indications, due to an oil transfer from one ship to another on Sunday, August 14, near the Coega harbour. Zolile Nqayi, spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Affairs, said the investigation into the cause and nature of the oil pollution is still ongoing. Capt. Neville Noble of SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) on Monday said that they are investigating the possibility of a second oil spill which was apparently caused by a passing ship just off Algoa Bay, on Wednesday, August 17. More details regarding this would be made available during the course of the week. SANParks rangers on Algoa Bay’s Bird Island worked tirelessly over the weekend to catch all

the oiled penguins so that the seabirds could be rehabilitated, said Fayroush Ludick, regional spokesperson for SANParks. Even members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) went out to the Port Elizabeth Islands Group (St Croix, Jaheel and Brenton) to help with the rescue. With their help, another 47 oiled penguins, including 15 chicks, could be taken for rehabilitation. The smeared penguins were taken to the South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) in Port Elizabeth and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in St Francis respectively. The NSRI has appealed to the community to donate towels and newspapers at these centres. Juanita Raath, SANCCOB rehabilitation coordinator, said the newspapers and towels are indispensable aids in the rehabilitation process. “Both are used to drying off the birds after the wash, then making a bed for each bird and it is also useful to wipe the excess fish off the birds’ beaks.” The penguins’ den is cleaned three times a day to avoid diseases and newspapers are then used up very quickly. BE HAPPY, YES U CAN HE IS BACK AFTER 5 YEARS OF SEPARATION

My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Ligan and Miss Jessica looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Ligan and Miss Jessica performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled! Like me, all clients I have been referring to him always got GUARANTEED RESULTS in a few days. Help needed with oiled penguins Continued from page 1 Raath said any volunteer who is willing to transport stock between Port Elizabeth and St Francis or help with washing penguins can contact the centre at 042 298 0160. Kevin Kelly of Xtreme Projects, which has been contracted to clean up the oil after the incident, said the sea appeared to be clean. Kelly, who was also involved in the storage of the stranded Costa Concordia off the coast of the island of Giglio in Italy, said the cleaning process kept his team busy for about eight hours. “It (the cleaning process) took about eight hours and the last few days we flew over the area to make sure everything is clean and it looks like everything is clean in the sea.” ; One of the rescued penguins.

EXPRESS INDABA INCORPORATED INTO PE EXPRESS

Port Elizabeth Express GROWS again PORT Elizabeth Express, the biggest free local newspaper in the Eastern Cape, will from September 6 this year grow again – to a whopping 120 000 copies. This follows exactly a year after the newspaper grew from 90 000 copies to 100 000 copies being distributed weekly. “This confirms what we said a year ago at the announcement of the increase to 100 000 copies – that the demand from our readers for more copies to be printed proves that print is indeed not a dying breed if a publication, while changing with the times, remains indispensable for both its readers and advertisers,” said Bettie Giliomee, regional editor of EP Media. In order to achieve this growth, the Express Indaba, a sister publication of PE Express of which 20 000 copies are distributed in some of the city’s major townships, will be incorporated

into the PE Express. The full version of the PE Express, including adverts and news, will now be distributed in the Express Indaba areas. The 20 000 newspapers distributed in these areas will, however, feature special pages to accommodate advertisers who only advertised in the Indaba and who would like to continue to do so. These pages will have local news to cater specifically for readers in these areas. According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of EP Media and Die Burger, the change in strategy was partly due to the fact that many Indaba readers, wanted the full PE Express and its advertising too. PE Express is a publication of EP Media which has a footprint throughout the Eastern Cape with 8 titles publishing 310 000 free copies on a weekly basis.

The newspaper has also embraced the digital era with a big social media following due to breaking news of local interest being covered minute by minute as and when it happens. Its stories can also be read on the popular News 24 website. . The expansion of PE Express to 120 000 copies on September 6, was announced to clients at a breakfast held at Elizabeth Place in Newton Park last Friday. To see the photos of the event, visit PE Express Newspaper’s Facebook page. ; At the client breakfast were, from left, Tasmia Ismail, General Manager EP Media, Megan Capoto and Nqobile Majozi of The Boardwalk Hotel, Convention Centre and Spa.

Tax on soft drinks seen as threat to jobs and economy COCA-COLA Beverages Africa Chairperson, Phil Gutsche, at a press conference, recently called on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape Government to assist the beverage industry in opposing National Treasury’s proposed tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). According to Gutsche, the tax threatens thousands of livelihoods and economic growth in the province and the city. South African Treasury on July 8 published a policy paper on a proposed 20% tax on sugarsweetened beverages (SSBs) to take effect April 2017. Gutsche was supported in this call by Steven Dondolo, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa shareholder; The Beverages Association of South Africa (BevSA); Little Green Beverages of Buffalo City; and Twizza Softdrinks from Queenstown. “Our industry supports the livelihoods of 14 000 people in this city and many more in the province. Nationally we support more than 200 000 jobs. If this tax proceeds, we stand to lose 60 000 jobs in our industry. More than 5 000 livelihoods will be affected in Nelson Mandela Bay alone,” Gutsche said. The beverage industry’s contribution to the economy has increased much faster in real terms since 2008 (258% increase), than overall GDP (which grew by only 43% over the same period). The poor will also carry a disproportionate burden, but will receive little benefit. For example, Mexico’s tax on SSBs resulted in a reduction of only 17kj of a daily intake of more than 12000kj. “The poor will therefore literally become poorer and not thinner as a result of this proposed tax,” Gutsche said. Gutsche was supported in this view by BevSA Executive Director Mapule Ncanywa, who em-

phasised that 97% of South Africa’s obesity problems had nothing to do with sugar-sweetened beverages, as they accounted for only 3% of daily kilojoule intake. “There are better ways to achieve the government’s goals,” Ncanywa said. Voluntary reformulation, packaging, labeling and other targeted commitments, already adopted in South Africa, will result in a greater impact on tackling obesity than the anticipated reduction of only 37 kilojoules a day because of a tax. Randall Dayce, plant manager at Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa in Nelson Mandela Bay, indicated that already, taxes on average accounted for 25% of the purchase price of soft drinks. He and smaller bottlers Twizza and Little Green Beverages also reported that the tax would have significant implications for employment and growth prospects in the communities where they operated and in the province. On behalf of its Refreshhh brand Little Green Beverages Director Glenn Sheppard stated that they would have to reconsider a significant investment in the extension of their Buffalo City plant, which would have added an additional 70 direct jobs, and that they would have to cut back marketing spend nationally by approximately R50m. Twizza Financial Director Nico de Jager said that even in a small town like Queenstown, the proposed tax could wreak havoc, making up to 815 people dependent on the state for their income and sustenance. “Our Provincial and City governments should be very engaged on the matter through Cabinet, the so-called MinMec meetings and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) to appeal to National Treasury to reconsider this harmful proposed tax,” Gutsche said. – REPORTER

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 2016

PE women conquer Kilimanjaro From left are Mary-Anne Stott, and sisters-in-law Sandy and Lynne Zoetmulder. They went on the journey of a lifetime, hiking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Fort D' Acre is a one of a kind unique game reserve situated at the mouth of the Great Fish River. We offer the ultimate experience of viewing game against the backdrop of the beach and ocean.

PHOTO:SUPPLIED

NINE months of training and perseverance paid off for three local women when they reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on Friday. Sisters-in-law Lynne and Sandy Zoetmulder joined their niece, Mary-Anne Stott, on this expedition after months of preparation. They set off on their adventure on August 13 and returned, tired and victorious, on August 21 after a six-day hike to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain. Their training included walking up and down Target Kloof in Walmer with their entire hiking kit, teaming up with two other friends and forming a running team and several other exercises. Local restaurant owner, Sandy Zoetmulder, said that it was one of those bucket list moments. “About nine months ago Mary-Anne mentioned that she was keen to climb Mount Kilimanjaro after having already completed two Ironman races. Lynne and I jumped at the opportunity to join her without even knowing whether something like this was possible for me.” Sandy was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia about 4 years ago and had to undergo double hip reconstruction. Sandy, who is a mother of two, didn’t believe she’d be in a position to consider an adventure of this nature.

We offer luxurious accommodation, in a sea facing Lodge which has spectacular ocean views from each suite. Game Drives into the reserve offer close up views of multiple species including Giraffe, Cape Buffalo, Burchells Zebra, Wildebeest and many antelope species, to name a few. We are conveniently situated only 25km outside of the coastal town of Port Alfred, 180km from Port Elizabeth Airport & approx. 110km from East London. For further information please contact Nicole on 082 092 3035. Email:escape@fortdacre.com www.fortdacre.com

“It was about 100km of walking. Some of the routes were quite tough and steeper than they looked.” Sandy added that the 100km was divided up between the days and the shortest distance they travelled in a day was 5km. It took them 7 hours to complete, due to the altitude. “It was the first time I have ever slept in a tent. It really takes a toll on you,” she says. The rucksacks they had to carry up the mountain, were only allowed to weigh 15kg or less, but even that proved to be quite heavy at times. “By the fifth day, we got the hang of it, and by then we only had one more day to go,” Sandy adds. “When we got to the peak, it was amazing and really cold. We were essentially standing on the highest point in Africa and we could not see anything, just a white blanket hanging over the earth. It was both beautiful and eerie at the same time.” According to Sandy, coming back down the mountain was almost harder than going up. “Coming down was gruelling. All preparation was essentially just for going up the mountain, but they do not prepare you for when you are coming down. It happened so fast. “Nine months of planning and training paid off. It was absolutely worth it. I do not regret a single step,” she concludes. – REPORTER

‘MISHANDEL, MISBRUIK, MISKEN - JOEY HAARHOFF WAS MY MA’

Skrywer vertel dogter se riller storie

AS SEEN ON TV

PE’s Bevin has heart set on ‘Idols’ glory ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL “I KNEW I only had this one chance. That I couldn’t afford to return home emptyhanded.” This was what motivated young Bevin Samuels (19) from Gelvandale, who is the Eastern’s Cape latest hope to finally bring the Idols crown to the province. He is currently in the Idols Top 37. The song he sang at the Idols audition was “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy, featuring Bruno Mars - a song which he chose at the last minute. “I had rehearsed other songs, but when I got to the audition I decided to go with ‘Billionaire’ because I thought it would suit me better, being young and wanting to be successful.”

The change in song choice paid off, with all four judges giving him the nod to go through to the next round. “Calling my mom, Benita January, with the news that I had received the Golden Ticket was even better than when I received my matric results last year,” said Bevin. He has been singing from a young age but only started taking it seriously in high school. In Grade 9 he and two other learners started a boy band, whereafter he was recruited by a group called The Gentlemen, of which he was the lead singer. Shortly after that he went solo, and that was when his good friend and former Idols contestant, Alton Zackay, encouraged him to enter the competition. “We talked about it for a while and he asked why don’t I try out for Idols, but I

wanted to finish school first.” This former Chapman High School learner finally decided to take the plunge this year and audition for Idols after thinking about it for two years. The journey hasn’t been easy - after a lone bus trip to Cape Town he nearly missed his audition because the train to the venue was delayed. “It motivated me even more to give my all when I sang. Then the judges gave me positive feedback, which was really great.” He knew that the notorious Theatre Week round that followed would be tough, but nothing could have prepared him for how brutal the group rounds were. “It was very difficult. Two of my group members didn’t make it through. It was disappointing because we practised until 4am and I stayed up until 6am, making sure I would remem-

ber the words to the song. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but I was hoping that at least one of us would make it through.” He added that behind the scenes everyone was very emotional, and most of them had lost their voices due to stress. Bevin will be in the line-up at a concert this weekend which will feature artists such as Alton Zackay, Enrico Damons, Junant, Stone Sisters and Peace Finders. The show takes place at the Gelvandale Community Hall on Friday, August 26, at 7pm. Tickets are R50 for adults, R20 for children aged 5-13 and free for children under 5. For tickets and more info call Zaakira Allen on 076 531 6269. ) To see if Bevin makes it to the Idols Top 16, tune into Mzansi Magic (Dstv channel 161) this Sunday at 5:30pm.

Squash legend Angela Difford dies REPORTER LOCAL squash legend, Angela Difford (91) passed away last week Thursday after being admitted to hospital with broken neck vertebrae after a fall at home. Her funeral service was held at the St John’s Anglican Church in Walmer, yesterday morning. Difford, who is well-known for her work in the development of squash in the province, was a former South African squash player and national selector. She was still actively involved in coaching. EP Squash said on their facebook page that Difford was a pioneer for squash in

the province who shaped and developed players of all ages and colours. In a post on Squash SA’s website she was described as “An extra special person who has left an impression on each and everyone one and lived life to the full and gave her heart to squash. “On Friday she drove the development players to Uitenhage and on Monday was still coaching at 91.” Squash SA also awarded her recently at their annual awards ceremony with the Ina Ackermann Memorial award for her contribution to women’s squash, as well as the Merit Award which is given to an administrator who has served the game with distinction at club, provincial or national level.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 2016

Students put theory to charitable use A GROUP of Public Relations first year students at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) were tasked to initiate a PR campaign, with a fictitious company, to help a charity organisation by putting what they learned in class to good use in practice. The group, which named themselves Queen Kode Media & Events, will on August 29 hold a Women’s Gala dinner to celebrate women and the end of its successful campaign. “We have been working with Bet Sheekoom, a PE based NGO that houses women in crisis. Throughout our campaign we have been trying to raise funds for them, not only in the form of monetary donations but also with household

items that are used by the women on a daily basis. “The vision we had when starting the campaign was to empower women to be independent by encouraging female entrepreneurship,” said Lunga Majola, a member of the group. Lucia Mtshake, who was recently elected to head the Businesswomen’s Association Youth Outreach Initiative portfolio for this year, will be the main speaker at the gala dinner. Other speakers will include representatives from the NMMU SRC and the PR students’ sponsors will be in attendance. The event will be held at the Vice Chancellor’s Lounge NMMU on South Campus from 7pm until 9pm. Tickets are available at R100 per person. For more info, contact Shannon Smith on 073 934 2522.

Local lifesaving club recruits learners ANIKA DE BEER

) S – Stick your hand up and wave for help when you are in trouble.

THE Seagulls Surf Lifesaving Club, located in Humewood, recently launched The School Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Programme in an effort to get young people interested and involved in lifesaving. According to club member, Roland Jerling, lifesavers are a dying breed and they need to do something to get kids interested in the sport again. To this end, the Seagulls Surf Lifesaving Club launched the programme on August 17 at Die Heuwel Primary School in Hillside, where the team spoke to the about 150 grade 7 learners. The club will be running the programme in 52 schools in the Northern suburbs of Port Elizabeth, visiting a different school every day of the week. The programme consists of two separate aspects: the theoretical phase, which is split into two groups, namely Lifesaving Events and Water Safety; and the practical phase, which will take place during the swimming season. “Lifesaving is not just about saving lives. It is also a sport. It’s about having fun,” said Kirsten Ingram to the grade 7 learners. The Seagulls taught the learners that lifesaving is not simply sitting on a beach or poolside and waiting for trouble to rear its head. There are several competitions that lifesavers participate in, with events involving running on the beach, paddling in the ocean and dragging people to shore. Lifesavers can also get an international certificate, which means that they are qualified to work anywhere in the world. As part of the water safety aspect of the programme, the Seagulls provided the children with many helpful tips on safe swimming in the ocean.

Kelly Oliphant (12) in grade 7C of Die Heuwel Primary School at the launch of the Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Programme.

The children were taught the FLAGS system to make it easy to remember the safety tips: ) F – Find the red-and-yellow flags placed in the water. They signify the safest swimming area. ) L – Look at the safety signs posted on the beach. They identify potential dangers and report daily conditions. ) A – Ask a life guard for some advice – especially when you are going surfing. The weather and water conditions can change very quickly. ) G – Get a friend to swim with you. No matter how strong a swimmer you are, the buddy system can save your life. Parents should also always supervise their children.

Additional tips include: ) Never swim with your eyes closed you could slam your head into a boulder or wander too far from shore. ) Never swim on an unpatrolled beach. There will be no one to help you if you get into trouble. ) As soon as you get to the beach, look for the lifesaver(s). They always wear red and yellow uniforms. ) Memorize the necessary emergency numbers: 112 for emergency services on a cellphone and 10177 from a landline. ) When the wind is blowing into the ocean, it is the best time to go swimming. This will ensure big waves, but the current will push in the opposite direction of the wind, which means that you will not get dragged too deeply into the water. ) Be careful when the wind is blowing out of the sea, though. This is the optimal time for riptides to form, especially with strong winds and a low tide. ) Should you get caught in a riptide, it is very important to avoid panicking. Do not swim against the current. Rather swim to the sides where there are weaker spots and you can escape. ) Do not let the waves push you underwater. Rather go down on your own to avoid getting turned around or swallowing water. These tips are not only useful to children, but to the public in general. Despite several daunting scenarios mentioned in Water Safety, the learners are very excited to start putting their new knowledge to good use. Once the swimming season starts, they will take those interested out into the ocean to put the tips to good use, since the majority of the schools in the Northern Area do not have swimming pools.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 2016

PE’s own Facebook Rap competition is back ANIKA DE BEER PE’s own rapping competition, PEGotBars, is back again with its second instalment and scouting for more local talent. Hein Bosman, producer and PEGotBars host, officially relaunched PEGotBars2 on August 15 and the competition is open to anyone who loves to rap. PEGotBars was created to give exposure to local talent by using a social media platform. Contestants must choose between two beats produced by Bosman and record a rap in studio within an hour. The songs are mixed and mastered and then uploaded to SoundCloud where listeners vote for their favourite by “liking” the song. The song that has the most “likes” by the cut-off date, wins. The artist then gets to release the track as his own. The first competition, which ran from May 16 to July 21, saw Scott Geduld, also

known as ScottyG, winning the title. Scotty G is currently working on his first album, entitled “Face of the Moon”. Bosman said, “I was not surprised that a very cool track came out of the competition. It’s why I hosted the competition in the first place, because I knew the talent existed in PE and, if it was given the platform, it would produce.” Bosman was overwhelmed by the community’s involvement in the first competition. “People were sharing the posts to listen to the tracks that were produced from the competition and seemed invested and interested, which is exactly what I wanted. “I want the competition to grow with each iteration until it reaches a point where each competition produces a track that gets played on radio.” Interested parties can listen to the two new beats at www.soundcloud.com/pegotbars/ sets/pegotbars2-beats. For more info contact Hein Bosman at 076 712 4824 or heineken@axxess.co.za.

Plenty on offer on Little Theatre stage REPORTER 2016 is the year for thought-provoking, evocative material from Pemads Little Theatre, which allows directors, actors and audiences to experience a taste of Grahamstown Festivallike productions. Earlier this year the Fiona Coyne Double Bill - As the Koekie Crumbles/Careful, directed by Linda-Louise Swain, played to critical acclaim and audiences can now look forward to another artistically-evocative production, running at Pemads Little Theatre from August 24 to August 28. Proof, by David Auburn, will be in the hands of Pemads committee member and director, Jamie-Lee Reynolds, with Amy Huntly in the lead role of Catherine, and Pemads stalwart, Mark Farrow, as her late father, Robert. Erin Palmer and Tim Collier will fill the cast complement. In 2001, Proof won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama and the Tony award for Best Play and in 2005, a movie version starred Sir Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow as the troubled

father and daughter. Proof is a drama that plays out after the death of Robert, a man in his fifties, who was a mathematical genius and professor at the University of Chicago. His daughter, Catherine, had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Now his ex-graduate student, Hal, discovers a paradigmshifting proof about prime numbers in Robert’s office. The title Proof refers both to that proof and to the play’s central question: Can Catherine prove the proof’s authorship? She finds herself in a relationship with Hal and at loggerheads with her cool and collected sister, Claire. The play explores Catherine’s fear of following in her father’s footsteps, both mathematically and mentally and her desperate attempts to stay in control. Proof will run at the Pemads Little Theatre from August 24 to August 27 at 7:30pm, with a 2:30pm matinée on August 27 and 28. Tickets cost R70 per person and are available through Computicket and at the door prior to each performance.

ADVERTORIAL: SPAR WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY

Week 2 rolls out SEVERAL senior staff members from various prominent Nelson Mandela Bay companies seated themselves in unfamiliar territory as part of the Wheelchair Wednesday campaign. Being a so-called able bodied person, spending 4 hours in a wheelchair carrying out everyday tasks was a much bigger challenge than most of the participants expected. “Overall this has been a challenging experience. I have a new sense of respect for people who have to face these challenges on a daily basis. I am grateful to have had this opportunity and to be part of this initiative,” said Fatima Khan of Mazars. “The gradient of the ramp from our car park to the office was really easy to negotiate,” said Fatima. She found the staff of a popular fast food chain to be extremely helpful and the stair-lift to the first floor eating area very convenient. Well-known Algoa FM radio presenter Lee Duru took part and had this to say: “Four hours spent in a wheelchair and I’m done with my tasks. But the sad part is my experiences don’t come close to what people with disabilities who are mobility impaired deal with on a daily basis. This was an eye-opening and insightful experience for me. Thank you to SPAR Eastern Cape and the Association for Persons with Disabilities for granting me

this opportunity which has broadened my horizons on a personal level.” Lee found drawing money from an ATM in a mall to be a daunting experience with all three ATMs on offer being designed for persons who can stand up straight. “In the wheelchair my privacy relating to my PIN and my security was severely compromised,” said Lee. Wheelchair Wednesday aims to bring about a change in people’s mindset regarding accessibility for persons with physical disabilities. It is the hope of The Association For Persons With Disabilities in the metro that this will continue to result in decision makers bringing about structural changes in public facilities allowing mobility impaired people the independence that they deserve. Another major aspect of the 5week project is the handing over of 130 wheelchairs at the close of the campaign. Participating companies pay a fee which covers the cost of purchasing these wheelchairs. “I recall doing my 4 hours in the wheelchair at the inaugural launch during 2012,” said APD Board Member Selwyn Willis. Willis went on to say, “Nelson Mandela Bay can be proud of APD’s ability to initiate this lifechanging project which is the first and the biggest NGO-based project of its kind in the country.”

Testimony for KING LWASA My Names is Charniel Johanes

from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 2016

MOTORING 21

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

Honda CRV: big in stance, big on features IN the fiercely competitive SUV market, Honda is packing a punch with its CR-V range – which offers high specs in even the bottom of the range models for those who like to own an SUV with plenty of comfort features while having to consider the budget. The range, which has models priced from R388 200 to R608 400, also caters for those who love high-tech features and can afford it. The CR-V was upgraded in the middle of last year. The improvements range from a bolder exterior design, to enhanced levels of standard equipment and improved ride with lower noise levels. Express on Wheels spent a week with the automatic version of the entry-level CR-V (priced from R403 600) and took it on the mom’s taxi route as well as a daytrip to Grahamstown for a school sports day. Even this bottom-of-the range model is loaded with features and is a big car, with big features for those without the big budget. Let’s face it – many people who would like to buy an SUV cannot afford the top of the range models - and while all the high-tech features offered in these top of the range models are “nice” to have, they certainly are not a necessity.

position. To ensure that gear changing is still done comfortably, the gear lever is positioned high up. This positioning of the gear lever also creates a lot of space between the driver and passenger seat for clever storage spaces in the centre armrest. The handbrake is also a foot brake – so this doesn’t take up space there either. The footbrake did, however, take some time to get used to. Fortunately – with the CR-V automatic model being equipped with hill start assist there was no rollback when stopping on inclines, so the foot handbrake only had to be used when parking the car. In the back there is also ample leg and headroom for the passengers – who have a fold-down armrest with cupholders at their disposal. Seats can be folded down using one hand only. The boot is a decent size and its floor is protected with a durable material which can simply be wiped down in case of spills. Adding to this practicality in the boot are plenty of clever little storage spaces for smaller article that you don’t want rolling around. There is also a bootcover to hide your cargo.

Exterior: Changes to the exterior have given it a bolder look. The changes to the front and rear bumpers have resulted in a shape that is slightly wider and longer than that of the previous model. In my opinion the CR-V has a look that would appeal to both men and women – it stands out in the parking lot with its big frame but it is not too bulky or muscular. Modern touches to the front include LED daytime running lights and prominent fog lights.

Model range The revised Honda CR-V range consists of six models offering four trim levels and two engine choices (2.0 and 2.4 litre), as well as manual and automatic transmissions. Even the entry-level Comfort version gets features such as a six-speaker sound system with USB connection, electric windows and mirrors, dual-zone automatic air conditioner, cruise control and rear parking sensors. The Elegance version comes with leather trim, electric-adjustable, heated front seats, adjustable armrests and the 7-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system. There are also retractable side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera linked to the touchscreen display. Executive models have 18-inch alloys and high-intensity discharge headlights with active cornering lights, a sunroof, smart entry and keyless stop-start. The new range-topping Exclusive has in addition features such as adaptive cruise control,

Interior: One of the stand-out features of the interior is the spaciousness. The simplicity of the layout of the dashboard and instrument panel gives it an understated and uncluttered look, while the many stowage spaces give it practicality in bucket loads. Controls on the steering wheel help one to have the audio system as well as trip computer info at one’s finger tips. Women, especially, will like the high seating

Changes to the exterior have given the Honda CR-V a bolder look and it is slightly wider and longer than the previous model. PHOTO:SUPPLIED lane assistance and collision-mitigation braking. Ride: While not the smallest car around, it certainly does have a car-like ride with the added advantage of its high seating position. Clever design has also resulted in good all round visibility. According to Honda, the CR-V’s suspension has been upgraded as well as the steering for sharper turning and manoeuvrability. The noise insulation is very good. The CR-V offers a smooth ride with great handling and precise steering. On the trip to Grahamstown, the automatic gearbox was at times a bit of a challenge while trying to overtake on the uphills. Overall, however, on the day-to-day commute and straights the gear transitions were smooth and the ride fuss-free and enjoyable. The CR-V features an Econ mode, which helps to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Honda states the 2,0-litre engine’s combined cycle fuel consumption is 7,7 litres/100 km for the manual transmission version and 7,6 litres/100 km for the automatic version. During the road test the CR-V realised fuel consumption figures of 9.7 litres/100km on average on the open road on the Grahamstown trip, while the fuel consumption after a week of driving in town was 10.7 litres/100km.

Safety and security Standard across all models are ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), emergency stop light system, front and rear fog lamps and LED daytime running lights are also standard, while the automatic transmission models also have Hill Start Assist (HSA). The flagship 2.4 Exclusive also adds Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) to the already extensive list. Security features include an alarm/immobiliser, remote central locking, automatic speedsensitive door locking and selective unlocking, keyless tailgate unlocking and a lockable glove compartment. Price: Prices include a three-year/100 000 km warranty, while a five-year/90 000 km service plan is included. A one-year AA roadside assistance package is also included. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

IT is almost as if it’s scripted that Formula 1 returns after its summer break to the greatest circuit in the world. Belgium’s majestic Spa-Francorchamps is set in all of its famed glory to host the 13th round of the 2016 season. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Spa is often rated as one of the most popular races by fans. The circuit, 7.004 km in length, boasts several overtaking opportunities, significant elevations changes, and a bevy of challenging corners. It provides an equally stern test to the cars as it demands an efficient aero package through its high-speed corners, and good power output and delivery for its long straights and climbs. It’s not just a great circuit on paper either. Since its first race in 1950, Spa has delivered victors, moments, and memories that will last forever: from Mika Hakkinen’s stunning pass, for the lead, on Michael Schumacher and backmarker Ricardo Zonta in 2000, to Kimi Raikkonen’s 2004 win from tenth on the grid, to Mark Webber’s spine-tingling 2011 overtake of Fernando Alonso around the outside into Eau Rouge. In 2016 another chapter is ready to be written into the glorious history of this mythical circuit. Mercedes start the weekend as favourites but it’s not a given that they’ll dominate the 44 laps on Sunday. The tyres selected by the sharp end of the grid have revealed quite a big disparity between the front running teams. Mercedes have chosen the conservative route on tyre selection, as each of their drivers will have only four sets of the red-walled supersoft tyre. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Vettel and Raikkonen have opted for seven sets a piece of the supersoft tyre. Ferrari has shown a prefer-

ence for the supersoft tyre throughout the first half of the season, which could have factored into their decision making. The cooler temperatures and difficulty in heating the tyre to their operating temperatures would have been another consideration for Ferrari. As fascinating as the tyre strategy could turn out this weekend, it may not play out at all. This circuit, situated in the foothills of the Ardennes Mountains, is notorious for its changeable and unpredictable weather. Add to this the vastness of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, it often results in rain at one end of the track while sunshine dominates the other half. There is also the possibility that Hamilton could be out of the equation, at least in the first part of the race. The unreliability that dogged his early season means that Hamilton, already on his fifth engine element, is close to incurring a grid penalty. A sixth engine would mean a painful ten place grid penalty. However, it would make sense to take it at this circuit as overtaking opportunities are plenty. Ferrari hasn’t had the season that they and most expected them to have. Nevertheless, team principal Maurizio Arrivebene has confirmed that there will be another engine upgrade but has not confirmed whether it will be forthcoming in Belgium or Italy. They do have Raikkonen in their arsenal who has been dubbed The King of Spa. But before the summer break they had clearly fallen behind Red Bull. This next round of the 2016 F1 season has everything going for it. The best drivers in the world sweeping through Eau Rouge, Pouhon, and Blanchimont on the greatest circuit ever built will be surely a match made in Formula 1 heaven.

Madibaz athletes shine at Cucsa Games REPORTER MADIBAZ athletes Cherise Sims, Garth Ellis and Divan Manuel won three silvers and a bronze medal at the Confederation of Universities and College Sports Association Games (Cucsa) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, recently. Sims, who grew up in East London, surpassed her own expectations by winning silver in the 5 000m and bronze in the 800m. Ellis and Manuel collected silvers in the high and long jump respectively. The 23-year-old Sims was forced to focus on the 5 000m after her main event, the 3 000m steeplechase, was cancelled. She also entered the 800m, which she hadn’t run since high school. In the 5 000m the part-time business management student found herself in second place with three laps to go, but unfortunately failed to catch the leader. An even bigger surprise came in the unplanned middle-distance event in which she set up her podium position with a strong final 200m. More than the medals, the NMMU athlete said she enjoyed meeting like-minded athletes

and representing her country. “The whole experience of putting on that kit that says ‘South Africa’ and actually representing your country was special.” Sims is impressive off the track as well, cramming her studies and athletics training in with her physiotherapy job at Dora Nginza Hospital. She said perseverance was key, but she was also appreciative of the support from the university that allowed her to travel to meets. Manuel, who started out as a cross-country runner in the Boland, set several personal bests this season. He credits much of his success to his Bestmed Madibaz Athletics Club coach Jenny Kingwill and said he found the Games challenging as she was in Italy preparing his occasional training partner, Rushwahl Samaai, for Rio. Although it was hard to cope with studies, training and travelling, he said his

lecturers were very supportive. Ellis, a Port Elizabethan, was hoping for gold but the human movement science student said he was more than happy with his runner-up spot. “It was quite a long season for me,” said the 24-year-old first year homeopathic student, who has his sights set on the Word Student Games in Taipei next year. “But I just continued with the same training,” which, he explained, consisted of technique, speed and strength work as well as plyometrics.“You don’t change a winning recipe.”

ZSPORTS WORLD: MICHAEL ZOETMULDER

Record attendance expected at Night Relay finale THE last of the 2016 Town Lodge Business Night Relay events will be taking place on Tuesday, August 30, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, starting at 6pm. Nelson Mandela Bay’s unique Business Night Relay has been well supported this winter and will be looking for a record attendance of running and walking teams come Tuesday evening. No other event in the country offers such a fun corporate team building opportunity in the settings of an iconic 2010 legacy stadium. This will be the final opportunity to get your company, social or sports teams together in teams of 5 runners or 3 walkers to come and take part in this event which sees all participants completing a fast 3.5km secure route within the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium premises. Gates open from 4pm for late registration and the collection of teams’ batons and race numbers. Racing kicks off at 6pm and is followed by the popular prize giving at 8pm offering over R20 000 in lucky draw prizes including R1 000 cash, a R3 500 pair of Asics running shoes and accommodation at any countrywide Town Lodge.

The 2016 Town Lodge Business Night Relay is enjoying the second year of a 3-year sponsorship deal with the City Lodge Hotels Group and is hosted by Access Management at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. This year’s support sponsors are BOS Sport, Caltex Eastern Cape, Oracle Media for the social media support, Quality on Demand Management for the lighting, ESS Medical for all the medical support, Dynamic Express Services and Atlas Security. Registration for the final round is possible and available on www.NightRelay.co.za. The cost is R500 per running team of 5 or R300 per walking team of 3. Online registration portal offers both Card and EFT payment options. Train race heading for a sellout The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race has received an above average number of entries at this early stage and would appear to be on track for a sell-out of 300 teams and a train packed with over 700 spectators. The Train Race, a unique Man vs Machine fun Duathlon style relay race for Teams of 5 runners and 1 MTB cyclist or Individuals, takes place in Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday

2nd October against a Metrorail Rail run by PRASA between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage Stations. Limited to just 300 teams, the race could well see a sell-out before the end of September and local companies and schools are encouraged to secure their entries soonest. To assist, the organisers are calling for the details of one team representative and team name(s) at this stage so that companies, schools, club or social teams are able to book their spots without having had the chance to finalise their team composition. The introduction of the MTB leg between Swartkops and Perseverance has proven to be a great success and ensures a further 30% of the race route is alongside the railway tracks and in sight of the train. The 38kms of the race are broken into 6 stages with each stage ending at a sponsored change over area with no fewer than 6 water tables along the route. Stage 1 is a flat 5km run from PE Station to the Caltex change over point opposite Sydenham Station; stage 2 is the shortest leg at 3.5kms and takes runners to the Discovery Consulting Services change over in Deal Par-

Simenya’s class shines through SO the Rio Olympics have run to a close decorated by an abundance of new records in the Games themselves and the usual showering of world best performances as well. South Africa won 10 medals including two Gold – Caster Simenya (800 metres) and Wayde van Niekerk (400 m). Chad le Clos had to bow to America’s Michael Phelps and settle twice for second place to his US superior. Van Niekerk is a family boy, which is why he wanted them intimately involved with his Games performance in Rio. For him it was a special joy, and it paid off in spades for him in no uncertain terms. Simenya’s performance, too, was extraspecial, a perfectly judged race. The way she waited and then with a burst of real pace and style took over the lead for this handsome win must have made up in great measure for all the talk and unhappy drama that have followed the young star, who surely in the years ahead will continue to garner even greater honours. Hopefully the outside world outside athletics will give her the chance she deserves to show what she is capable of. In this sort of form she will surely run and win many more middle-distance victories and her legend is sure to live on. Enough for now. At Durban’s Kingsmead, in the first of a three-Test series against New Zealand, play was abandoned without play on Sunday’s third day due to a heavily wet outfield. Hashim Amla, with his usual stylish stroke play, scored a typically stylish 53 in 79 minutes in South Africa’s 263 all out . Temba Bavuma, with a nicely struck 46, and Quinton de Kock, 33, both looked set for more runs when risky shots got the better of them. Kagiso Rabada, 32 not out, was the only other batsman who looked capable of more when he ran out of partners. Dale Steyn looked to be back to something like his best form, taking both Kiwi wickets to fall for just 15 runs. Rugby followers had their hearts in their mouths at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. It looked seriously like this international against Argentina was going to be a repeat of a year ago when the Pumas scored a humbling 37-25 victory over the Springboks in Durban. With just 10 minutes remaining and the Boks seemingly on the verge of defeat, only two moments of brilliance, inspired by late

changes, gave the Boks a new lease of life, as tries by Johan Goosen and Warren Whiteley saved the day. This was definitely not the ideal start to the international season the Boks and new coach, Allister Coetzee, were looking for. One of the few to show real class for the Boks was scrumhalf Faf de Klerk, whose

ty just passed New Brighton Station; stage 3 is a 4.5km run through to the Town Lodge change over area on the Strand in Swartkops before the MTB Cyclists take over for stage 4 to cycle to Perseverance. Stage 5 is a mixture of trail and road running to take teams to the Bidvest Car Rental change over stage at Despatch Station before the final runner takes over to complete an 8km run to the Uitenhage Station which will feature a festival of activity including a Kids’ Play Zone, Castle Lite Beer Garden and supplied braai facilities (regret no open fires permitted by teams or visitors). Further information, team registration and Spectator train tickets are all available on www.TrainRace.co.za. Over 80% of the allocated 700 train tickets have already been sold and soonest purchase at R60 per person is recommended to avoid disappointment. The Train Race, backed by Powerade, Dynamic Express Services, the Kelston Motor Group and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, supports local charity Love Story, the Redhouse Benevolent Society and the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise.

work rate on attack and defence was out of the top drawer. The Springboks at the weekend travelled to Salta, Argentina, for the return Rugby Championship game and will need a much improved showing if they hope for another victory over the Pumas. The standard they produced was simply not good enough.

schools spread across five regions. The players are excited as SPAR has extended their sponsorship to next year. Collegiate coach Andrew Beynon said they had thoroughly enjoyed the competition. “We have had a long season and Saturday was quite tough, playing five matches in the end, but it was a lovely way to end the season.” The concept was started in KwaZulu-Natal by former SA women’s team manager Les Galloway, who is now the Challenge’s national director. She said the inaugural Eastern Cape tournament had been “an overwhelming success”. “It has worked from a player’s point of view where they enjoyed interaction with teams they don’t normally play. “Then you come into a final like today which sees sides from Border, EP and South Western Districts all competing against each other.” Galloway was confident the tournament would grow in the future. “This was the first year and nobody really knew what it was about. Now that they’ve heard about it, I know more teams will want to be involved.” Regional tournament director Peter Wilson

COLLEGIATE was crowned the inaugural champions in the SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge when they defeated Hudson Park in an exciting final at Woodridge on August 13. In a day of entertaining hockey, which saw five teams vying for the honours, PE Coastal winners Collegiate and East London Coastal champions Hudson Park qualified for the final. Even though Hudson Park lost their final match against EL Inland champions Kingsridge 2-0, they had done enough to contest the title match. The final, played over 15 minutes in each half, was a thrilling encounter, with both sides having their chances to break the deadlock before it ended 0-0 after full-time. This resulted in a three-player shoot-out which Collegiate took 3-1 after Hudson Park missed their second shot at a goal. The miss gave the PE team a 2-1 advantage and when they slotted their third goal they took an unassailable lead. The inaugural tournament involved about 50
