Bay’s own waterfront step closer REPORTER

T

HE Bay is a step closer to having its own waterfront with Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) Port of Port Elizabeth signing its first long-term leisure and recreational tenant lease in the Baakens River Precinct, marking a milestone in plans to develop a future waterfront precinct at the harbour. The 15-year lease agreement with black economic empowered entity Lebolog (Pty) Ltd has led to the establishment of the new Shisa African Restaurant, which is located in the vicinity of the Baakens Street which is one of the finest pieces of real estate in the Port. The venue was officially unveiled on Friday, September 2, 2016, although trading began on Women’s Day in August. Port Elizabeth Port Manager, Rajesh Dana, said, “The signing of this lease takes the port further along on its journey of evolving into a ‘Smart People’s Port’ with improved community access and recreational activities. “We look forward to attracting a variety of tenants into this precinct in order to promote recreation, tourism and leisure activities in the Port. In the future the Port’s Marina Development project – stretching from the Baakens River to Dom Pedro Jetty - will provide opportunities for expansion and growth for businesses,” he added. Lebolog (Pty) Ltd – owned by husband and wife team, Sibusiso and Zoliswa Nkosi – has owned and managed successful shisa nyama restaurants and events in Cape Town over the last few years. Having identified this niche market, they were inspired to create a similar experience in Nelson Mandela Bay by establishing Shi-

sa African Restaurant. Co-founder Zoliswa Majodina Nkosi said, “Our primary aim is to simultaneously uplift the image of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Port of Port Elizabeth by contributing to and being a part of the much anticipated Port Elizabeth Waterfront. “We also aim to create a leisure and relaxation venue away from home by combining African cuisine with the traditional South African shisa nyama experience, accompanied by entertainment from local Marimba and live jazz bands. Patrons can expect a unique and enjoyable atmosphere suitable for anybody from fun-loving families, professionals, tourists and students, across all colours and creeds.” “We have created 24 job opportunities for the Nelson Mandela Bay community and also contributed to the Eastern Cape arts and culture community by soliciting the melodies of local Marimba and Jazz bands,” she said. Those popping in at Shisa African Restaurant can expect a family-friendly menu comprising traditional dishes like umleqwa (fresh farm chicken), ulusu (tripe), idombolo (steamed bread) and umngqusho (samp and beans), alongside sophisticated seafood dishes and kiddies’ meals. Dana said, the future marina development is envisaged as an integral part of the harbour’s development and would link up with the Mandela Bay Development Agency’s plans to develop the city’s Baakens River for leisure and recreational purposes. These plans are also anchored by Transnet’s concept of a “people centric port”, which aims to accommodate the diverse people of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro both culturally and economically.

Accommodation establishments encouraged to be graded ROSLYN BAATJIES THE benefits of the grading of tourist accommodation in the Eastern Cape was outlined last Wednesday by Michael Mbuyah, the new provincial assessor of the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA).

WE WANT YOU TO COME AND

FOR US THIS SEASON Woolworths is looking for vibrant, enthusiastic and people-oriented individuals to step into any of these positions, between November 2016 to January 2017 at our Port Elizabeth stores.

• TILL OPERATORS • SALES ASSISTANTS • REPLENISHERS To qualify, you will need • Grade 11 or higher • English proficiency • Good numerical skills • Willingness to work shifts, overtime and public holidays • Relevant experience (advantageous). TO APPLY, SMS PE to 45554. • • •

“People think that grading accommodation means giving it a star award, but it is so much more than that,” Mbuyah said. “To grade accommodation means that a standard is set. It means that you add value to your business.” Mbuyah said that the TGCSA is in service of the tourism industry and will ensure that the accommodation is graded, because it makes business sense. “By becoming a member of the grading council, your accommodation is marketed to an international audience through the council’s website. Additionally, the graded accommodations can use the logo of the grading council on their stationery. They also receive a certificate and plate, which indicates what star the accommodation was awarded,” Mbuyah said. These accommodations are also listed on the South African Tourism website. “What owners of tourist accommodations should keep in mind, is that government and state officials may not stay overnight in ungraded accommodation. The government is a big client and, if you are graded, you stand a chance of getting business from the government.” He added that accredited assessors are linked to specific accommodations and that product owners in the hospitality industry can choose one that they are comfortable with. An additional free service to graded institutions is free legal services, Mbuyah added.

SMS cost R1.50 each. Applications may require up to 8 SMS. Personal Information you provide will only be used for recruitment and/or employment purposes.

Michael Mbuyah, the new Provincial Assessor for the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA). PHOTO: ROSLYN BAATJIES Grading also makes excellent business sense. “A graded accommodation business gets so many more guests. It means that more job opportunities are created and the unemployment problem addressed. “Guests who get value for their money in a graded place help to build consumer confidence. They will, at the next opportunity, stay at the same place,” Mbuyah explained. The cost of grading depends on the number of rooms in a tourist accommodation. The monthly membership fees vary from R2 057 to about R10 300, depending on the size of the accommodation. ) The TGCSA was created in 2000 by Valli Moosa, former Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

IPTS to be operational soon ROSLYN BAATJIES THE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) will be fully operational in the near future, the mayoral committee member for roads and transport, Rano Kayser, said on Thursday. Kayser made the announcement at the Bay’s oldest and only steel bridge of over 135 years old, in Swartkops as part of the launch of his 100-day plan for the directorate. “If conditions permit, and statutory obligations are met, I’m committed to roll the IPTS out soon. “Rest assured that we will take our communities into our confidence, as well, to remind them that this system belongs to them,” said Kayser. He added that commuter forums will be the real drivers of Libongelethu, the public transport agency. “IPTS will go back to where it belongs: to the people. We spent more than R2.5 billion in road infrastructure for IPTS. It is important that we as the new government will not make the same

mistakes as our predecessors.” According to him, the municipality will in the Transport Month of October secure the IPTS lanes creating serious traffic hazards, especially in Govan Mbeki Avenue. “Taxis, motorists and truck drivers currently use the lanes to circumvent the traffic. This leads to unnecessary road rage and accidents. I commit myself to secure the lanes from October 1. It will only be used when the bus service is rolled out,” Kayser added. Over the next 100 days there will be a hive of activity with the resurfacing and resealing of roads such as William Moffett, Dibanisa, Burman, Old Grahamstown Road, Kabega Road Bridge, Aalwyn Drive, Kruis and R334, Cape, Tyinira, Jongilanga, Woodlands, Burt, Mitchell, Tyityaba, Nkhukhama, Ntshembe, Nikiwe, Sisulu, Lingwa and Brittlewood. Furthermore, faded road signs, vandalised street names and fences along roads will also receive attention, Kayser said. In addition, 192 workers of the expanded public works programme will be appointed to help clean stormwater drains and open ditches.

Rano Kayser, mayoral committee member for roads and transport, on Thursday outlined his 100day plan for transport and the IPTS in the metro. To his right is Councillor Kabelo Mogatosi.

– CARA-LEE DORFLING

Community policing Sentrum vir fisiek gestremde kinders in outreach for a safer Bethelsdorp moet ander heenkome vind Deal Party area ROSLYN BAATJIES

REPORTER MEMBERS of the SAPS and local private security companies joined forces for a visible policing event recently, in a move they hope will encourage local businesses and residents to support community policing efforts. Joint roadblocks were set up on major roadways leading into the Deal Party area on August 26, and were manned by members of the SAPS’s Airwing, Mounted, and Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding Services Units. They were supported by armed response officers from ADT Security. “We hoped this show of force would send a message to criminals that law enforcement and security role players were watching them, and that local business owners would also become involved in uniting with us in the fight against crime,” said Captain Sandra Janse van

Rensburg, media liaison for Mount Road SAPS. The joint exercise was arranged after a request from Deal Party Sector Policing to address the increase of criminal activity in the area. These activities include hijacking, armed robberies, and business robberies, as well as house burglaries. “The increase in these activities called for action from the role players and a show of force was conducted as a result,” said Shawn Swiegelaar, ADT’s Community Development Manager in Port Elizabeth. “ADT is delighted to have been involved in this initiative as we believe that one of the main solutions to counter criminal activity is community involvement and collaboration among all stakeholders. “This is a clear indication of the teamwork and synergy that exist among all the role players and we are satisfied with the impact which it made in the area,” said Swiegelaar.

Die skade, herstelwerk uitgesluit, be-

Music scholarship Concert at NMMU REPORTER NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Music De-

partment will be hosting the Charles Bryars Scholarship Concert on September 20 in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium.

The six finalists in line for the Charles Bryars Scholarship will compete against each other in a concert on September 20. They are, from left, Chadley Johonson, Arnu Oelofse, Mieke Struwig, Tiago Vital, Evan Perkins and Carolyn Rossouw. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Auditions took place at the end of August and the finalists chosen will stage their performances at the concert, after which the overall winners will be selected and announced. The six finalists are Carolyn Rossouw on the recorder, Mieke Struwig with the clarinet, Chadley Johnson with his trombone, Tiago Vital on the tuba, Evan Perkins playing the piano and Arnu Oelofse on the organ. Arnu Oelofse will be performing at the Dutch Reformed Church in Summerstrand at 6:30pm on the same evening as the concert, which will take place at 7:30 at the NMMU South Campus Auditorium. Entry to the concert is R40 per adult, R20 per pensioner and R10 per student or scholar. For more info, contact Nicky Bosman on 041 504 4235.

ADVERTORIAL: SPAR WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY

Wheelchair Wednesday comes to a close Mr South Africa Armand du Plessis and Wayne Hart of Algoa FM fame were suddenly way out of their comfort zone. The two popular personalities cut a nervous picture waiting to be issued with their final instructions before setting out on their four-hour stint in a wheelchair. The reason for this is the Spar Wheelchair Wednesday challenge. The project slogan says it all: “Spend 4 hours in a wheelchair and change a life.” A total of 260 corporate high fliers and celebrities have, over the past five weeks, experienced the challenges related to making use of a wheelchair to get around. They pay an entrance fee and get to hand the wheelchair that they use during the fourhour challenge, over to a needy beneficiary. The beneficiaries are carefully screened by the APD Nelson Man-

dela Bay Social Work Team to ensure that they fulfil the necessary criteria required, both physical and financial. Spar Wheelchair Wednesday runs for five weeks of every year and is now in its final week. On Tuesday, September 20, 130 needy beneficiaries will receive their brand new wheelchairs. The handover ceremony takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “We are proud to announce that during the five years of Spar Wheelchair Wednesday’s existence, we have handed over 500 wheelchairs to Nelson Mandela Bay residents. We consider this to be life-changing and we salute business Nelson Mandela Bay for their ongoing support,” said director of APD Nelson Mandela Bay, Brian Bezuidenhout. “This project, supported by Spar Eastern Cape, is unique to South Africa and by far the biggest NGO wheelchair donation drive in the

country. The awareness regarding the need for universal accessibility in our city has grown phenomenally recently and we welcome the public announcement from our local tourism authorities to make this a priority.” The project serves four important purposes:

) Awareness: The four hours in the wheelchair is an unforgettable experience that changes mindsets forever. Over five years some 1000 participants of Spar Wheelchair Wednesday have been exposed to wheelchair related matters. ) Community Support: The project has resulted in 500 wheelchairs being donated to needy people over the last 5 years. ) Improving Accessibility: The vast improvements brought about in many local structures and the mindfulness of our local citizens to simple matters, like the importance

of reserving disabled parking bays for mobility impaired people is encouraging. ) Fund raising: APD Nelson Mandela Bay provides job creation opportunities for some 100 people with disabilities at their workshops in Paterson Road, North End. With no assistance from local or national government and with running costs in access of R500 000 per month, they need to reach out to business and individuals to help keep the doors open. “We are truly proud to be associated with such an amazing project. As a corporate, we don’t support this initiative to tick a box. We support Wheelchair Wednesday and APD Nelson Mandela Bay because we care, and we can see the difference that it makes in the lives of needy people within the region that Spar Eastern Cape serves,” said Roseanne Shadrach, Sponsorship Controller, Spar Eastern Cape.

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life,

My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Formula 1: Off to spectacular Singapore THE Formula 1 paddock leaves Europe behind as it sets off the final push for the 2016 season. First on the flyaway schedule is the Marina Bay Circuit in Singapore. As the first ever night race on the calendar the 2008 debut of the Singapore Grand Prix will forever be shrouded in controversy. It was during this Grand Prix that the infamous “crashgate” scandal was born as Renault ordered then driver Nelson Piquet Jr to deliberately crash in aid of teammate Fernando Alonso.

Luckily this incident didn’t mar the reputation of the Singapore GP which has become a favourite on the calendar for drivers and fans. For fans the spectacular vista of Singapore presents a cosmopolitan destination while the novelty of a night race hasn’t yet worn off. The light skimming across the sculpted bodywork of a Formula 1 car continues to be one of the most visceral experiences of the year. For the drivers, the Marina Bay Circuit is as demanding a track as they are likely to face in the entire sea-

son. In layman’s terms this circuit would be described as busy. Throughout just five kilometres drivers are bombarded with 23 corners with barriers and walls lying in wait to punish the smallest of errors. The level of concentration required is second to none, along with the added factor of weather conditions. Though they are supremely fit athletes, drivers easily point out that the level of concentration required and the humidity make Singapore the most physically demanding race of

the year. It’s not a dawdle for the cars either. The nature of this street circuit demands a high downforce setup and it’s tough on brakes too. Here horsepower isn’t as important as a good chassis, which will bring more teams into the mix for the ultimate prize on Sunday. Twelve months ago Mercedes arrived at the Singapore Grand Prix with the expectation of fighting it out for the front row and ultimately the win. This expectation was completely decimated as both Hamilton and Rosberg struggled through the weekend. While Hamilton eventually retired from the race, Rosberg could only manage a distant fourth. At the time several conspiracy theories swirled around Mercedes’ sudden loss of pace but in reality it was a change in tyre pressures that

stumped Hamilton and Rosberg twelve months ago. While the team is likely to have solved this issue for 2016, victory this weekend isn’t a done deal. The biggest challenge for the top step of the podium is sure to come from Red Bull. The Austrian team should excel this weekend given its aerodynamic prowess. Ferrari too will have an eye on a better performance, as it was Sebastian Vettel who won the 2015 Singapore GP. However, despite the fact that Vettel is a bit of a Singapore specialist the 2016 Ferrari isn’t quite the car the team delivered last year. Mercedes has utterly dominated the 2016 season but despite this, and however preposterous it may appear, Red Bull will be the team to beat this weekend.

Strong finish gives Madibaz EP hockey title THE Mecer NMMU-Madibaz men’s hockey team dominated the final stretch of their programme to regain the Eastern Province premier league title in a thrilling finish to the competition. After struggling with injuries for most of the season, the Madibaz won three of their last four games in August to pip defending champions Lakeside Cavaliers by one point for the title. In doing so, the varsity outfit were crowned champions again after also winning the title from 2011 to 2014. Crucially, said Coach Cheslyn Gie, they defeated Rhodes 7-1 in their final fixture, earning a bonus point to put some pressure on Lakeside Cavaliers. “That meant Lakeside Cavaliers had to win their last match to win the league,” he said. The champions, however, went

down 3-2 to Gelvan Hurricanes in that game to finish on 34 points, compared to NMMU’s 35. “The final result between Lakeside Cavaliers and Gelvan Hurricanes was a surprise but not a huge one,” said Gie. “Gelvan defeated us 3-2 three weeks prior to that and we knew they had the ability to spring a surprise. “Also, under the coaching of exNMMU player Nathan Kops, they have improved throughout the season and have played with a good structure.” Gie praised the Madibaz squad for their dedication in what he called a “very satisfying win in an injury-riddled season”. Gie added that their success would not have been possible without the support of their sponsors. “It’s tough to get sponsorships in

Tremble: now for the All Blacks Sharks showed the quality one expects of toplevel sides. Indeed, they looked no better than second rate at their international and inter-provincial, level. Rugby matches are not won or lost purely on systematic figures, but it is indicative of the generally low standard produced by both teams in the Brisbane Test when one compares some of its statistics. Here are some: Carries – Wallabies 114, Boks 105; Clean Breaks – Wallabies 7, Boks 6; Passers – Wallabies 133, Boks 109; Offloads Wallabies 12, Boks 9; Tackles – Wallabies 98, Boks 97; Line-outs won – Wallabies 13, Boks 15; Overall possession – Wallabies 51%, Boks 49%. Yes, in many ways these statistics show how close the contest was. They also show that by and large the Australians were slightly the better side. How sad that a Test that had the Springboks leading 14-3 after just 16 minutes should have let so much slip that at the halfway mark they led by just a single point (1413)! Already the cracks were showing in this error-ridden Springbok performance. Another of the Bok shortcomings lay in an apparent belief that the team could steamroll

their way through the opposition by sheer force when a little finesse such as a sidestep at the right moment might well have opened up a gap or two. As it was, the two tries the visitors grabbed so early in the Test came from opposition errors that Warren Whiteley and Johan Goosen joyfully pounced upon. Very few of the Springboks lived up to their reputation. One of the few was the hard-working, dependable No 8 Whiteley; surely captaincy material for the future. Immediate, perhaps? With no better than a 50 percent record from six matches, Bok coach Allister Coetzee needs

his team to do a lot better than the played-sixwon-three record it is presently saddled with as they ready themselves to take on the mighty All Blacks in Christchurch this weekend. Here are just two improvements. PieterSteph du Toit, playing off the bench, deserves a start in the second row with Eben Etzebeth to improve the all-round strength of the scrum. Bring Morné Steyn back at flyhalf. The veteran still has plenty of rugby in him. Coming down a step to the Currie Cup game at Kings Park, the Sharks losing 30-38 to the Cheetahs were no better than mediocre, even if for the moment they are top of the Cup log.

SPRINGBOKS and Sharks are two very different beasts. The former are four-legged fellows of the wild known for “their ability”, says the Oxford Dictionary, “to burst forth from soil or root or stem...” Sharks on the other hand are” large, voracious fish”. They can also be “extortioners or swindlers”. In rugby terms neither of these two names fitted South African teams parading their wares last weekend; the first-named in far-off Brisbane, Australia, and the latter at Durban’s Kings Park in the Currie Cup. The Springboks, losing 23-17 to Australia’s national team looked nothing like their namesakes of the wild, yet a converted try worth seven points would have given the South Africans a 24-23 victory. No doubt rugby orientated families throughout the country were holding their breath around their TV sets last Saturday, telling themselves, “It’s possible, we can do it!” But in both cases it was not to be. Certainly, the Boks didn’t deserve victory, nor did the Sharks at home against the Free State Cheetahs. Nor would the Boks have deserved it. Let’s be honest: neither the Boks nor the

Urban run gives city, charity new lease on life MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE Nelson Mandela Bay leg of the Urban Run South Africa event this past weekend raised just over R150 000 for charity thanks to the most generous donations of the participants who took part in this unique charity initiative to highlight urban renewal in local cities. The city became alive this weekend as over 700 runners and Mountain Bike riders tackled the city for charity whilst raising funds for Cleary Estate Cheshire Home and the Reach for a Dream Foundation. This annual event is hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) with proceeds from the KFC Rotary Kids Zone and Castle Lite Beer Garden going to the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise. A fanfare of activity on the Donkin Reserve greeted participants and spectators as local entertainer Gino Fabbri warmed up the masses before the participants lined up behind a group of traditional African dancers. Executive Mayor Athol Trollip fired the starting gun. Sunday’s race took the participants through 8.5km of the historic city centre with participants having to tackle no fewer than 24 obstacles with 5 Powerade drink

stations on hand. As the participants left the Donkin Reserve they went through a foam tunnel, then onto the new home of Masterton’s Coffee, through Donkin Village and back onto the Donkin for the Cerebos slip and slide and the SkipGo obstacle before header through Dockside Brewery and the refurbished Grand Hotel. They also passed the magnificent athenaeum and had an exciting climb into Fort Frederick before a steep climb down into the lower Baakens valley with stunning views of the harbour where the National Ports Authority (NPA) had arranged for a tub to be positioned with water cannons spraying. At the bottom participants got to enjoy ice cold slush puppies before negotiating the Party Design maze. From there it was onto what proved to be the toughest and one of the most popular obstacles, the Bo’s Plant Hire monkey bars across the freezing cold Baakens River. Along the river banks runners had to attempt a fun pouring obstacle with Caltex Eastern Cape before climbing over a massive low bed truck from Crash Trucks and then on through the quickly changing area of Chicky’s Yard housing Richmond Hill

School teams urged to take on the train THE 2016 Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race takes place on Sunday, October 2 and local schools are encouraged to secure their entries soonest before the race sells out. This unique biathlon style relay race against a Metrorail Train is unique to the metro and the only event of its kind in SA. Teams comprising five runners and one mountain bike rider will challenge for line honours and floating trophies at the event which

will see hundreds of teams competing against a train over the 38km distance between PE and Uitenhage Stations. The categories of entry include school teams, social teams, club teams and corporate teams with hospitality and t-shirt packages on offer. Spectator tickets for the train, at R60 per ticket for the return trip, are selling fast. For more info see www.trainrace.co.za or contact Michelle on 041 484 7860.

Brewery before heading back along the river and through the Tramways building and home of the MBDA. Then the runners went through the sections of the event which were voted most popular on the day. Second best obstacle was the Nutritech section which saw runners going through the ruins of St Peter’s Anglican church and St Mary’s cemetery before heading into the harbour where the NPA had arranged an assortment of obstacles winning themselves the Best Obstacle floating trophy. After the harbour the runners went through the Old Post Office managed by Gimco, through the Feathermarket Hall and the Opera House before finishing back on the Donkin. With over R150 000 raised for charity this weekend, top collectors Amanda de Ridder (R9 500), Lyndon Bagley (R6 060) and Annelize van Niekerk (R5 555) were rewarded with great prizes with Amanda getting the Philanthropist floating trophy. Action pictures and videos from the event are available on the Urban Run facebook page with results from the weekend available on the event website www.urbanrun.co.za.
