Traffic laws enforced REPORTER

O

VER the last month, the Municipality has held more than 21 roadblocks across Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch.

Safety and Security Member of Mayoral Committee, Councillor John Best, said the main purpose of the increased visibility was to curb lawlessness by assessing vehicle roadworthiness, checking for outstanding arrest warrants and fines, and driving under the influence of alcohol,

amongst others. “We had 48 officers on duty during the law enforcement operation and just for Friday, we managed to pull over more than 1 000 vehicles. “Although our focus is not on generating income, we would like to encourage motorists to pay their outstanding fines and ensure that they are obeying traffic laws to avoid getting fined in the first place.” Last Friday a total of 128 cases were recorded of which 23 warrants of arrest were executed and a total amount of R33 500 received at the road-

block between 11am and 1:50pm. “To steer clear of being held up at roadblocks, residents are encouraged to also pay their fines through the municipality’s website by following a few easy steps,” Councillor Best added. How to pay your traffic fines from the NMBM website: 1. Connect to the NMBM website (www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za). 2. Click on anyone of the following links on the website (Residents, business, visitors or council).

3. Click on eServices and select Pay my Fines. 4. Alternatively go directly to the following URL (www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za/Council.aspx?pageID=191). 5. A user name and password is required to log in to the Pay My Fine website. First time users need to register first. 6. If one is already registered, log in to the website and perform the transaction. Please note that one is required to register on the Pay My Fines website before traffic fines can be viewed or paid on the site.

Bay residents in frank discussions for the IDP REPORTER THERE were frank discussions at the third Integrated Development Plan (IDP) session of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality last week, said Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. An atmosphere of constructive suggestions and frank discussions by residents and political leadership alike made for a beneficial third IDP and Budget Participation session at the Newton Park Library this evening, he said. Opening the meeting on behalf of Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, Speaker of Council Jonathan Lawack said redress and delivery must find expression in the Nelson Mandela

Bay Municipality’s five-year Integrated Development Plan. “Our painful past has resulted in polarisation, disunity and segregation. We need to make a concerted effort to unite our people to ensure social cohesion. Our painful past has resulted in inequalities and imbalances which need to be redressed. “The third pillar is part of our strength which needs to be tapped and that is our diversity. “Our different cultures, languages and backgrounds provide excellent opportunities to augment each other and to complement each other as well,” said Lawack. He added that the challenges facing the metro included infrastructure maintenance. He said the IDP for the next five years would have

to address that. “A total of 42% of the water from our dams is lost as a result of unaccounted for water before it reaches our houses. Our infrastructure is old and antiquated and needs to be replaced. “Electrical losses are a huge headache and together with water losses we are annually losing hundreds of millions of rands,” Lawack said, adding that under development in mostly the black residential areas needed to be addressed in the IDP. “Unemployment makes up 36%, of which the youth represents a large percentage,” Lawack added. Suggestions from residents included improved spending in poorer areas, infrastructure development to enhance traffic flow, ac-

celerated human settlements delivery and recycling, amongst others. The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Human Settlements, Nqaba Banga, said the municipality is in the process to computerize the housing waiting list to ensure that beneficiaries will be able to follow the progress of delivery through a transparent process. The MMC for Budget and Treasury Retief Odendaal presented the Budget at the meeting and the MMC for Infrastructure and Engineering, Annette Lovemore, dealt with issues pertaining to infrastructure and water augmentation. The last meeting for the week took place at the Jeff Masemola Hall in Uitenhage on Friday, September 22.

Buddy is Woensdagoggend omstreeks 04:50 by die Bay worldmuseumkompleks gesteel. FOTO’S: WERNER HILLS

Bayworld se kontaknommer is 041 584 0650. X1RT667R-PX210916

ANIKA DE BEER THE Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, located in Central, Port Elizabeth, is looking for new members to join their choir. The Cathedral, which celebrated its 191st birthday on September 11, recently appointed a new choir director, Akhona Nkumanda, and is looking to add some new vocal talent to the choir. Nkumanda is a music teacher at Westering High School and the musical genius behind the revival of the Ipi Tombi production that took place at the Savoy Theatre in August. “He has brought a new energy and enthusi-

asm to our choir performances,” said Patty Bosman, a member of St Mary’s. The Cathedral Choir is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music and, as such, is exposed to numerous opportunities of training and massed choral performances, including the Christmas Songs of Praise with Richard Cock. St Mary’s is looking for new members of all ages to join the choir. Anyone with an interest in music is welcome to join. The choir meets for rehearsals on Friday evenings and sings in services on Sundays starting at 9:30am. For more info, contact The Very Reverend Sharon Nell on 082 743 1675 or stmarychurch@telkomsa.net.

Baking bread blindfolded for World Retina Week

We would like to hear from our readers. Send your letters to The Editor to PO Box 525, Port Elizabeth 6000. You can also e-mail your letter to express@media24.com

REPORTER RETINA South Africa held a workshop on Friday, September 23, in celebration of World Retina Week which took place from September 18 to 24. During the workshop visually challenged people were introduced to new gardening and baking skills. They were taught how to plant an herb box, grow their own herbs and, if they wish, how to use the herbs for cooking purposes. Several journalists were invited to take part in the workshop and had to complete their tasks while blindfolded. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce blind and partially blind people to new skills that could ultimately give them a potential income. Under the watchful eye of creative landscape designer, Allan Haschick, the participants first cut their herbs before adding them to bread dough, making foccacia bread. During his presentation, Haschick provided the participants with several helpful tips on growing their own herbs: )Herbs have a special liking for the sun and will not grow to their full potential if they are placed in the shade. )Most of the herbs mentioned grow in the Mediterranean region,

Noluthando Mlakalaka (left) with her husband, Witness Mlakalaka, placing their cut herbs on the bread dough. PHOTO:ANIKA DE BEER which has a very dry climate. Thus, herbs only need to be watered once or twice a week. )Several of Haschick’s tips included recycling. For instance, it is very easy to make markers for different herbs using the lid of an ice cream tub. Simply cut out different shapes to differentiate between herbs. )Another creative idea was to use a two litre milk bottle as a watering can by making a few holes in the lid. The bottle has a handle and can easily be used to water one’s herbs. )When asked how a blind person

can differentiate between the herbs and weeds, Haschick advised them to place an old piece of carpet around the herb plant. This would allow water to seep through, but not weeds as they cannot penetrate the material. Haschick later taught the participants how to plant their herbs in the bottom half of a two litre coke bottle. The workshop proved to be very insightful, according to Gail Cillie, Chairperson of Retina SA Eastern Cape. They now have several new exciting ideas for projects to work on in the future.

Christian College learners raise flour babies ANIKA DE BEER HIGHER Ground Christian College, a small Christian school located in North End, Port Elizabeth, started a project to teach their learners about the responsibilities of teenage pregnancies. The programme is part of this year’s curriculum and requires Grade 10 learners to carry a flour sack baby with them for three weeks and to treat it as one would a real baby. “We are an un; Siphamandla Swartbooi (Gr10) proudly poses with his flour sack baby, ‘Ace’.

derprivileged school and would like to stop the abuse and neglect of children,” said Heloise Sequeira, project coordinator. Higher Ground is only a few years old and has a total of 257 learners. They currently teach children from pre-primary to grade 10, adding another grade every year until they reach matric. The grade 10 class con-

sists of six learners, of which only one is a boy. This is the first year that the school is doing the project and principal Mafani is planning on making it an annual thing. “The children need to understand that having a child is a big responsibility. They cannot do what they want to when they have someone to look after. They are putting their whole future on hold,” she said. When asked if they would do the project again given the opportunity, the teenagers all gave a resounding no. They all agreed that it sounded fun at first, but it turned out to be very hard work. The project is to last for three weeks, starting on September 7, and by the one-week mark they had all had about enough of taking care of a baby, even a fake one. “When my teacher told us about this project I was thinking about the nice things that my baby was going to wear. As the weeks went by, I started to get irritated,” said Uviwe

PHOTOS:ANIKA DE BEER Qolohle. “What I learned from this project is that when you are a teen parent, you have a big responsibility.” The project also proved to be quite embarrassing for the learners, who had to take it with them to the shop, on the taxi and everywhere else they

went, causing people to comment or laugh at them. “Having a baby was fun, but at the same time it was hard and embarrassing, because I had to carry it everywhere I went and treat it as if it were a real baby,” said Siphamandla Swartbooi.

Most of them thought that having a baby would be easy, but it turned out to be the complete opposite. The project turned out to be quite successful as they all agreed that they would wait until finishing school and finding a job before they think about having children.

Bay duo brews up craft beer and food fest REPORTER CRAFT beer enthusiasts will have the chance to enjoy some never-before-tasted microbrewery brands when the inaugural Craft Brew and Food Fest comes to Port Elizabeth on October 14 and 15. The two-day festival will give the PE public the opportunity to taste more than 20 different craft beer brands and boutique wines from across the country, paired with expertly prepared foods to fit each style. Organiser Elsje Smuts, who is the

driving force behind the successful Christmas in the Home seasonal market, has been busy behind the scenes to create what she describes as “a unique taste experience.” According to Smuts, the festival will be all about “enjoying fine craft beer and artisanal food with family and friends in a relaxed environment.” Jonathan Roche, technical partner to Smuts on the craft brew side, said craft beer was currently one of the fastest growing sectors in the food and beverage industry worldwide. “South Africa has over 800 craft

beer brands and we hope to bring many of these great brands to PE over time,” said Roche. “We want to take people on a journey through craft beer as it evolves over time.” He said beer lovers could look forward to tasting both familiar and new craft beers and ciders as they explored and compared a wide range of beer styles. For PE’s foodie set, Smuts said the focus would be as much on the food as the beer. “The beauty of this event is having an equivalent range and selection of culinary delights on equal

standing with the beer,” she added. She said recognised and amateur chefs and bakers would create food and delicacies closely linked to each craft beer category or style. The festival will be held in the former Valley Market venue in Baakens Valley, on the corner of Alabaster and Lower Valley Roads. For more info, contact Elsje Smuts on 082 873 7663. Von Memerty brings ‘Keyboard Killers’ to PE Renowned entertainer, Ian von Memerty, is bringing his latest show, Keyboard Killers, to Port Elizabeth. PHOTO:CLINT LEE MULLER

IAN von Memerty is currently touring South Africa and will be bringing his piano, singing and entertainment skills to Port Elizabeth with his latest show, “Keyboard Killers”. Inspired by some piano greats, Ian von Memerty’s “Keyboard Killers” brings the magic of Freddy Mercury, John Legend, Cole Porter, Billy Joel, and many more to stages across the country. “I wanted to write a show that is great entertainment and would really test my versatility as a pianist, singer and entertainer,” said Von Memerty. The first production taking place in PE will be a fundraiser for The Igazi Foundation – a blood bank and cancer and bone marrow chari-

ty which operates out of local hospitals. Von Memerty and his wife, Vivienne, have had three children, two of whom were diagnosed with Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome (or MPS 6), a genetic metabolic disease. Their oldest child, Valeska, lost her life to the disease at the tender age of five. “The work of the charity obviously resonated with me, with my two children having had three bone marrow transplants between them,” he said about the fundraiser for The Igazi Foudation. Von Memerty will be bringing his tour to PE from tonight, September 28 to October 1 at the Opera House.Tickets to the shows are available at Computicket from R120 to R150.– ANIKA DE BEER

ronment, the social worker investigates the case and finds a permanent placement for the baby. “We provide everything for the babies during their stay with us. It is most rewarding to know that our home has been part of the life stories of many little faces; we treasure the memories of each one of those little hearts and all of our lives have been changed because of them.” The age categories are 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months and 19-24 months. All the ages are based on the baby’s age as at October 29. The top 10 finalists per age category will be chosen by a panel of judges, made up of key sponsors, media partners and centre management. On Wednesday, October 26, the top 40 finalists’ photographs will be published in PE Express. The 40 finalists and their moms and dads need to be available for a short “meet and greet” with the judges on Tuesday, October 25. Specific times will be scheduled with the parents. Thereafter, the top three entrants per age cate-

gory will be announced at the final prize-giving on Saturday, October 29, at 10am in Walmer Park’s promotional arena, where they will be awarded their titles and prizes. Winners not present at the prize-giving at 10am will be disqualified. All of the top 40 babies stand a chance of winning fantastic prizes from the sponsors – which are Dischem, the Baby Gym, Toddlers Workshop, Edubaby, Francarlo Designer Goldsmith, Kodak Express, Debbie Louw Photography, Edgars, Pick n Pay, Baby Builders, Circular Health, Rain, Dulce café, Capitec Bank and Happy Little Humans. Only photos taken by Debbie Louw at the incentre studio will be eligible for entry. Parents can collect their babies’ photos from Kodak Express Walmer Park from November 2, and not before. Record return for Wheelchair Wednesday REPORTER AS Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip committed himself to a Wheelchair Wednesday exercise, SPAR Eastern Cape and the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD) announced a record handover of wheelchairs recently. In its fifth year, the APD initiative, backed by SPAR Eastern Cape, saw enough funds raised to provide 152 wheelchairs for those in need, bringing the overall total to 521 chairs since the project was first launched in 2011. Wheelchair Wednesday traditionally takes place in August and sees celebrities and company representatives spending four hours in a wheelchair at a shopping centre to experience the challenges faced by those with disabilities. They were tasked with completing simple daily chores, such as using an automatic teller machine, buying groceries and visiting a coffee shop, to better understand the real-life challenges faced by people with disabilities. At a function hosted by Access Management at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, SPAR Eastern Cape promotions and advertising manager, Wendy Westraadt, said the project was “something which touched out hearts.” The executive mayor was equally humbled by the occasion. Welcomed as one of the VIPs, Trollip said afterwards, “The real VIPs are the people who go out of their way to assist people who can’t help themselves. “I know we have to do a lot more in government to take care of people with disabilities. And that’s not to take care of them in a patronising way, but to make them feel part of society. “I have now committed myself to a

Besides assisting those in need, Westraadt said SPAR’s involvement was also focused on making sure their stores provided a comfortable shopping experience for those in wheelchairs. APD executive director Brian Bez-

uidenhout said they were delighted at achieving their target of raising funds for at least 150 wheelchairs. “This year has been absolutely amazing. Last year we handed out 120 and this time we set ourselves the target of achieving 150 wheelchairs,” he said. Bezuidenhout said there were an estimated 100 000 people with disabilities in Nelson Mandela Bay. “About 10 percent of those are wheelchair users and I can tell you half of them don’t have wheelchairs. “The corporates have been amazing, with a lot of repeat supporters, as well as new people coming on board. And that’s why it is growing each year,” he concluded.

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life,

My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2016

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

Here, there and everywhere GIVE the man a break. Admittedly things don’t exactly look too bright for the Springboks at this stage. The latest word in sports journalism – as regards Test rugby as presently played by the Springboks – is covered by the somewhat awkward word, “underperformance”. That’s a full sixteen letters, in case you would like to know. It’s not just awkward; it’s a word that new Springbok coach, Allister Coetzee, has been saddled with at almost every turn since taking over the thankless task of coaching the Boks. Admittedly, things don’t exactly look bright at this stage. The Boks have so far played seven Tests and lost four. If those are not problems enough, take into account, too, that former president, Oregon Hoskins, just some weeks back plunged the South African Rugby Union (SARU) into further turmoil by handing in his resignation as SA rugby boss after a career that admittedly has had its ups and down, but wasn’t all doom and gloom – where it is now badly stuck as a

handful of men wage war in attempts to gain its control. To make matters worse SARU’s current chief officer, Jurie Roux, presently is not exactly a knight in shining armour with allegations of misappropriation of funds during his time as the game’s top official at the University of Stellenbosch. It’s apparent, too, that SARU’s general manager of high performance and highly regarded former Springbok captain, Rassie Erasmus, clearly saw where things were heading when he resigned some months ago and left for Ireland to further his career. But let’s look on the bright side. It’s not all gloom. Coach Coetzee isn’t by any means having a joy ride. Far from it. But it’s far too early yet to assess his ability to make a success of the heavy demands of this new job. For a start a major step forward for Coetzee, despite having much of the management staff thrust upon him, is the appointment of Matthew Proudfoot. So give the man a chance. He’s rugby-bred

through and through . . . and Rome after all truly wasn’t built in just a day. Looking at the Rugby Currie Cup last weekend at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth the EP Kings, after a first 20-minute period in which they fought bravely to be just 0-7 behind against the Golden Lions, it all fell apart as the Jo’burg team took complete control to win 71-7. The Lions, earning five points from their 11try victory are now set for a crucial league game against the Sharks. A win for the Lions would put them in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, on the cricket front in the oneoff ODI match against Ireland in Benoni on Sunday the Proteas were altogether too strong for the visitors, scoring 355 to win by 206 runs. Opening batsmen, Temba Bavuma (113) and partner Quinton de Kock (82), were top scorers for the South Africans, the latter joining a small elite number to score a century on debut at this level. Bavuma was dropped on the second ball of the first over.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Malaysian GP: Mercedes vs Ferrari? USUALLY by this stage of a Formula 1 season the Malaysian Grand Prix had long since played its part in the championship as the second round of the year. However, in 2016 the dazzling challenge that is the Sepang International circuit hosts the 16th round of the championship. The Grand Prix circuit, just outside of the Kuala Lumpur city centre, was designed by F1’s favourite architect Herman Tilke and made its debut in 1999. Of the current crop of drivers Sebastian Vettel is the most prolific in Malaysia with four wins, while Ferrari is the most successful constructor with seven victories. The 5.5 kilometres of the Sepang circuit is one of the most technical on the calendar, which will highlight or expose aspects of a Formula 1 car. The long straits either side of the enormous main grandstand are a test for the combustion engine and present genuine overtaking opportunities. The flowing and twisting complex of corners in sector two will provide the biggest test on a car’s aerodynamic competence. In other words it’s a circuit tailor made to highlight the best of what Mercedes has to offer. Despite this, since the start of the Mercedes era they took only one victory, in 2014, and have, surprisingly, not dictated proceedings here.

In 2015 Sebastian Vettel took his first win for Ferrari in Malaysia and underlined an incredible turnaround for the Italian team. 2016 hasn’t been an extension of last year, however, as the Italian team has failed to build on the solid foundation of 2015. Nevertheless, the team and its drivers have the potential to deliver this weekend. Ferrari are expected to bring several new aerodynamic parts to Malaysia in the hope of improving on downforce and in the hope of challenging Mercedes this weekend. The other team in the equation is Red Bull Racing but it is likely, at least initially, to be a weekend of damage limitation for Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen. The Sepang circuit, with its long straits, is not a Red Bull friendly one but it isn’t only pace which can determine the outcome of the race. The weather, although forecast to be hot, has a tendency to produce random thunderstorms which could impact on the result. Nico Rosberg has forced the momentum in the race for the driver’s title firmly towards himself with several stunning results, including a victory two weeks ago in Singapore. In contrast, Lewis Hamilton looked decidedly off-colour in Singapore. For once it is Lewis Hamilton in the unaccustomed position of needing to deliver in order to inject some energy into his bid for a fourth world title.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN

Wheelchair Wednesday peaks at 500 wheelchairs in just five years T

he Wheelchair Wednesday campaign, an initiative spearheaded by die Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD), has taken Nelson Mandela Bay by storm since its humble beginnings in July 2012. On Tuesday 20 September 2016 newly elected executive mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip, gave his stamp of approval when 152 wheelchairs were handed to persons with physical disabilities at an illustrious handing over ceremony held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Over the past five weeks the Wheelchair Wednesday Campaign challenged 260 corporate high fliers and celebrities to get around in a wheelchair for four hours and perform various tasks. Particants paid an entrance fee for a chance to hand over the wheelchair that they had used during the four hour challenge to a needy beneficiary. The beneficiaries were carefully screened by the APD Nelson Mandela Bay’s social work team, ensuring compliance to the necessary physical and financial cri-

The function was hosted by the Access Management team at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “This project is really close to our hearts,” said Wendy Westraadt, Spar Eastern Cape promotions and advertising manager, who represented the main sponsor. Welcomed as a VIP guest, executive mayor Trollip was equally

humbled by the occasion, praising the actual heroes of the campaign. “The real VIPs are those who go out of their way to assist others who can’t help themselves.” The mayor conceded that the government should do much more for persons with physical challenges, without being patronising, but on an equal basis in relation to all the country’s citizens.

“I have now committed myself to a Wheelchair Wednesday next year, because I think it’s important for people who are able-bodied to understand how difficult it is to live in society if you are disabled,” he concluded. Brian Bezuidenhout, executive director of APD, was extremely happy about the success of the campaign. “We are proud to announce

that during the five years of Spar Wheelchair Wednesday’s existence, we have handed over 500 wheelchairs to Nelson Mandela Bay residents. “We consider this to be lifechanging and we salute businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay for their ongoing support. “This project, supported by Spar Eastern Cape, is unique to South Africa and by far the biggest NGO wheelchair donation drive in the country. The awareness regarding the need for universal accessibility in our city has grown phenomenally recently and we welcome the public announcement from our local tourism authorities to make this a priority,” he said with pride. The APD is proud of the success of the Wheelchair Wednesday campaign and especially its partnership with Spar.

The project serves four important purposes:

. Awareness: The four hours in the wheelchair is an unforgettable experience that changes mindsets forever. Over five years more than 1 000 participants of

Woensdag 28 September 2016 Advertensie

A visually moved Spar Eastern Cape promotions and advertising manager, Wendy Westraadt, thanked everyone present. Spar Wheelchair Wednesday have been exposed to wheelchair-related matters and have developed a better understanding of the challenges that people with physical disabilities face daily. Many of the participants are using their individual platforms to raise awareness for the physically challenged and especially those in wheelchairs. . Community support: The project has resulted in 500 wheelchairs being donated to physically needy people over the past five years. This in turn has a positive impact on the individual’s

ability to become more mobile in order to improve the economic situation of the person who is wheelchair-bound. . Improving accessibility: The vast improvements brought about in many local structures and the mindfulness of our local citizens to simple matters, like the importance of reserving parking bays for mobility impaired people, is encouraging. . Fundraising: APD Nelson Mandela Bay provides job creation opportunities for approximately 100 people with disabilities at their workshops in Paterson

Recipients were carefully screened by APD social workers. Road in North End. With no assistance from local or national government and with running costs in excess of R500 000 per month, they need to reach out to businesses and individuals to help keep the doors open. The sponsorship of Spar Eastern Cape over the last years has played a major role in ensuring the success of the campaign.

The last five weeks saw five Spar supermarkets as the launch pad from where over 200 participants were taken to perform their prescribed tasks in a wheelchair for four hours. Roseann Shadrach, sponsorship controller of Spar Eastern Cape, reiteratered the corporate’s support of this worthy cause. “We are truly proud to be asso-

ciated with such an amazing project. As a corporate, we don’t support this initiative just to tick a box. “We support Wheelchair Wednesday and APD Nelson Mandela Bay because we care, and we can see the difference that it makes in the lives of needy people within the region that Spar Eastern Cape serves,” she said.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET?

Is it your house or perhaps your car? It's neither of these really. Your most valuable asset is you and your ability to earn an income during your working career. But have you ever stopped to think about what would happen if you suddenly lost your ability to earn an income because you were disabled, whether it was temporary or permanent? How would you pay your bond, school fees, groceries, car instalments?

We see true transformation as having a measurable impact on people’s lives, and extending for generations to come. It’s about making a difference in our communities and contributing to the growth of the economy. Roseann Shadrack, sponsorship controller of Spar Eastern Cape.

How can you protect your income? Many South Africans protect their families and their assets with life cover, but don't protect themselves and their lifestyles against events that can leave you unable to earn an income. But with GREENLIGHT disability cover from Old Mutual, we make sure that your life continues and your income is secured. You can insure up to 100% of your income with Old Mutual's GREENLIGHT Disability Cover.

2015 X TOUGH, BUT WORTH IT!

Participants share impressions of their wheelchair experience

W

hat makes Wheelchair Wednesday unique is that participants are required to spend four hours in a wheelchair performing various prescribed tasks to get a feel of what it must be like to be wheelchair-bound and still do daily chores, do shopping or drive a car, among many other everyday tasks. “The beauty of this project is that we continue to get reports back from participants confirming the fact that Spar Wheelchair Wednesday is changing the way people see and think about mobility impaired people, in this case, more specifically people who use wheelchairs,” says Brian Bezuidenhout, executive director of the Association for Persons

with Physical Disabilities. Participants ranged from radio personalities to professionals from various corporates in Nelson Mandela Bay, and even Mr South Africa, Armand du Plessis. Feedback from participants who took part in the 2015 campaign was constructive and largely positive. Taryn Ross from SJM Flex SA reflected on her experiences and had this to say: “It was an awesome experience to take part and to see how a person with a disability has so many challenges that people don’t realise. It was extremely difficult to do even basic things for yourself. “There needs to be more awareness raised on what changes are needed in shopping centres,

2012 X A GREAT START

The wheels started rolling for 50 chairs T

he Wheelchair Wednesday campaign was launched by die Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD) Nelson Mandela Bay for the first time in July 2012. The objective of the campaign was to raise sufficient funds in order to provide wheelchairs to persons with physical disabilities, and to raise awareness among businesses with regard to easier accessibility for people in wheelchairs. The first sponsor that partnered with APD on the campaign was ABay. The aim in 2012 was to get 50 corporate participants and their 50 assistants from within Nelson Mandela Bay to practically learn about the challenges that mobility impaired people face and the opportunities that existed to rectify them. Able-bodied participants were required to spend four hours in a wheelchair while performing various tasks at a specific location. In doing so, participants developed better understanding of what the many challenges for persons with physical disabilities were on a daily basis. During that year 50 needy children received free wheelchairs and more than R300 000 was raised to cover the running costs at the APD

Day Care Centre on the outskirts of Motherwell, where APD took care of 29 children with disabilities. The handover ceremony was held on 6 August at the Red Location Museum in Port Elizabeth. School principals and occupational therapists from various special needs schools within Nelson Mandela Bay were requested to identify 50 needy and suitable recipients for the 50 wheelchairs on offer. The children with their teachers and headmasters were initially given a guided tour through the museum. This was followed by lunch in the form of a “happy box” which included a hamburger, sweets and fruit juice. Personalised certificates, which included a photo of the recipient, were printed and framed. These certificates were ceremoniously handed over to the relevant donors. After the succesful campaign in 2012, the APD organising committee commented: “The ABay Wheelchair Wednesday campaign has exceeded our wildest expectations. The fact that we could start a unique ground- and barrier-breaking initiative that was taken seriously by business at large in our city, was refreshing.

Happy children with their wheels and certificates.

MW Wheels SA (Pty) Ltd We would like to thank Iwan Wiid and Dave Munn for participating in Spars Annual Wheelchair Wednesday. Your effort on behalf of MW Wheels in this worthwhile charitable event is noteworthy. Wheelchair Wednesday was initiated in response to the growing need for wheelchair accessibility in the built environment (specifically in places of employment) and greater understanding of people with disabilities in business surroundings. Business leaders who spend a few hours in someone else’s shoes (so to speak!) automatically experience life from a different perspective, bringing home the unique challenges faced by wheelchair users daily.

CHANGING LIVES

It is APD magic that makes the wheels go round in Port Elizabeth T

he Association for Persons with Disabilities, Nelson Mandela Bay, was established in 1940 and is a non-profit organisation (NGO) located at 55 Paterson Road, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This NGO inspires change by sharing the stories of the people they serve. APD was established to promote the advancement of persons with disabilities and to help them attain a maximum level of independence and integration into the community. Their vision is for Nelson Mandela Bay to be the most accessible, inclusive and disabilityfriendly metro in South Africa. Two of the main centres of empowerment that APD prides themselves in, are the Ability Wear Job Creation Centre and the Ability Industrial Job Creation Centre.

signer. And the rest is history! Today I draw and grade my own patterns and assist in preparing new custom designs. I am excited about my future and continue to set new boundaries for myself and others that will follow.” Craig Meyer (physically disabled): “I started working at APD about three years ago as manager of the stores and packing department after initially struggling to get a post there. I had previously worked at several companies, but never found my ‘home’. At APD I learned what it is to be really happy in your work place. Here we show love and support to each other. My life has improved a lot because of APD. I want to thank my managers for the opportunity and for believing in me.”

Success stories

Liezl Leslie (hearing impaired): “I feel proud of myself at what I’ve achieved so far as a junior pattern maker. It has given my self-esteem a boost. I started working at APD in the Ability Industrial Job Creation Centre doing basic packing and sorting work. I then moved to the Ability Wear Job Creation Centre as a sewing trainee. Initially I started on a production line, but struggled to cope with the speed due to limited function in my hands. The sewing manager recommended pattern making because of my natural creativity. I was then appointed as a junior pattern assistant to the qualified senior de-
