First ever Wingfling in Bay REPORTER

T

HE Wing Riders of South Africa motorcycle club will be having their annual Wingfling event in Port Elizabeth for the first time ever. Every year, the Wing Riders have an event called Wing Fling, where the Wing

Riders have a bike rally that lasts a full week. This year, the Wingfling organizers have chosen Port Elizabeth as their venue. The pristine machines will start making their way into town from Friday, October 7. During the Wingfling a number of entertainment- and charity drives take place that coincide with the event and this year the

South African National Blood Service and The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) are getting on board. The Wing Riders club consists of members throughout South Africa and Swaziland. To become a member of the club, one needs to own a Honda Goldwing motorcycle. “The Honda Goldwing Touring motorcy-

cle is regarded as the best touring motorcycle in the world. It is equipped with a comfy heated seat, speed cruise, CD player and radio, just to mention some of the features,” said Deon van Tonder, the Wing Fling 2016 PE event coordinator and a member of the Wing Riders of South Africa club. Barricades erected to stop illegal use of IPTS lanes ROSLYN BAATJIES ON the eve of national transport month, yellow barriers were last week erected in Nelson Mandela Bay metro’s IPTS lanes in Stanford Road to prevent motorists from using them illegally. Rano Kayser, mayoral committee member for Roads and Transport, committed himself early last month to address the illegal use of these lanes in his first 100 days in the portfolio. “Taxis, motorists and truck drivers now use the lanes to circumvent the traffic. This leads to unnecessary road rage and accidents. We want to prevent it. “They will only be used when the bus service is rolled out,” said Kayser. He added that the ro-

ads will be maintained so that they are in good condition when the IPTS buses started running. “We have received only positive feedback from the public about the barriers. They are happy that order has been restored on the roads. “I also use Stanford Road on a daily basis and experience the flow of traffic with all the other motorists who are in a hurry to get to their destinations in the mornings. When a taxi or car in an unauthorized lane pushes in front of you, unnecessary frustration is caused,” said Kayser. The barricades were erected from the Cleary Park Shopping Centre to the Stanford Road and Chase Street intersection. According to Kayser, the IPTS will be in operation in April next year with the route from Cleary Park to the Port Elizabeth city centre and the Nelson Mandela University being the first.

CARALEE DORFLING A NEW emergency department that was under construction at the Dora Nginza Hospital in Port Elizabeth, will probably have to be rebuilt after fire damage. The new wing at the hospital that serves, among others, New Brighton and Zwide, was set alight by angry residents last Wednesday. According to Police spokesperson Captain André Beetge, locals had taken their grievances about the appointment of non-local workers to the building site of the new wing and set the wood framework of the unfinished building on fire. Beetge said the fire quickly got out of control because of the strong winds that fanned the flames. Siyanda Manana, provincial spokesperson for the Department of Health, visited the scene last Thursday. The building is part of a R99 million project which was estimated to be

completed in the next 20 months. “There is extensive damage and it seems that the work may have to be redone,” Manana said. He said a meeting between the department and contractor would be called at a later stage and then a meeting with the local residents would also be held. “The incident is shocking. The new building was intended to help the local residents, but now it seems to be them that are breaking down the building. Discussions should be held with the residents, and the police should prosecute those who are responsible.” At the time of going to print, no one had been arrested for arson. “It is also not clear how many people set the building on fire. Everyone dispersed quickly when the fire got out of control and had already gone when police and firefighters arrived at the scene,” said Beetge. “The police are still investigating the incident.”

The Grootboom Hope Foundation, which runs a feeding scheme and daycare centre from two containers in Timothy Valley, was the target of two break-ins in the same week. He and his wife, Cynthia, had been struggling with break-ins at the soup kitchen for some time, but this was the first time they had been the target twice in one week. The soup kitchen feeds about 600 people per day, and runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. First ever Wingfling in Bay Continued from page 1 The Wing Riders will have a Concourse Competition in the Baywest Mall on Sunday, October 9, in the Food Court from 9am. The SA National Blood Service will be alongside the riders and every blood donor can take a selfie with the Goldwing motorcycles. They will also receive a discounted printout of the selfie. As some of the Wing Riders travel a great distance to be at the event, the club has arranged some much needed entertainment for them. On Saturday, October 8, Gino Fabbri will be providing some comic relief at the Summerstrand Hotel, while on Thursday, October 13, the Centrestage Band will be perform-

ing the “Take Back Time” show. Tickets for these shows can be purchased from the event organisers. According to Van Tonder, the Honda Goldwings are known for their spectacular light show event, which will take place on the evening of October 11 along Marine Drive towards the Boardwalk from 8pm. The Wing Riders also have a couple of outruns planned for the week, including a Volkswagen factory tour, a trip to the Airforce Museum and a day trip to SANCCOB, where the release of penguins can be witnessed. For more info and to join the Goldwing members on their events, contact Deon on 082 566 0416 or search “Wingfling 2016 Port Elizabeth” on Facebook.

Local teen raises almost R100 000 for cancer patient

Students to host event for CANSA REPORTER A GROUP of first-year students studying towards a National Diploma (NDip) in Public Relations Management at NMMU are hosting a special event for CANSA this Friday. The students have been assigned with the task of organising an event under a fictitious company. The event will be assessed with the marks going towards their end-of-year mark for Public Relations 1 their major. “We named ourselves Evoke Events and we are organising an event in conjunction with SABC in aid of the CANSA association where we will be having activities, such as a shave-a-thon and spray-a-thon,” explained Wanda Dlambulo, one of theteam members.

“The event will be split into two parts, the first being a cancer awareness information session, where a doctor will inform guests about cancer detection and treatment. A cancer survivor will also tell their survival story,” explained Dlambulo. The public will be able to listen to the information via live streaming. The second part of the event will be the shaving and spraying, and donating will take place. A lucky draw will also take place. All proceeds accumulated will go to the CANSA association. “At the end of the event people will be given an opportunity to purchase balloons and let them float up in memory of loved ones,” said Dlambulo. For more info contact Phumela Matshaya on 078 421 5962 or phumela13@gmail.com

In the process Jordan van Eeden, a learner at Harvest Christian School, has managed to raise almost R100 000 for Jason Sherman (16) who has been battling osteosarcoma (bone cancer) since 2011. Jason has relapsed several times and despite numerous operations to remove tumours, Jason still continues his battle with cancer, plunging his family deep into financial debt. After reading an article on Jason that was published in the PE Express on June 8, 2016, Jordan became inspired to start a fundraiser for Jason and his original plan was to raise R16 000. Being that they are the same age, Jordan immediately identified with Jason. Jordan started his campaign when he got permission from his principal, Sean Moore, to speak at other schools to raise awareness for the fundraiser. He has been hosted at several schools around Port Elizabeth, and even had the chance to speak on Radio Kingfisher. Though Jordan is grateful to everyone who contributed to his cause, he is especially thankful to Collegiate and Victoria Park High Schools, as well as certain individuals from

Rand Merchant Bank in Johannesburg. Jordan said that the most moving moment of the campaign happened at Harvest Christian School, when a Grade 7 learner gave R50 and apologised for the fact that it was all she had. “The selfless sacrifice of that child became such a statement for what this thing has been all about,” said Jordan. Jordan visited Jason several times and was always humbled by the experience, saying that in spite of everything Jason is going through, his spirit and love for life are a huge example of what it means to truly live. “Jason is sick but he makes me feel better,” Jordan said. For most people, raising any amount of money at the age of 16 is a challenge. However, instead of raising R16 000 as planned, Jordan ended up raising R94 500 for Jason’s family. He handed the oversized cheque to the Sherman family on the evening of September 28, after Jason was admitted to the hospital again. “There is so much good in this world,” Jordan said, “and it all begins in the hearts of individual people who choose to give of themselves.” Jordan does not plan on stopping his campaign yet, though. He will continue to raise funds for Jason’s family and asks the community to aid him in his cause. Should anyone wish to make a donation to the campaign, contact Yvette on 072 194 6294.

Alison to share inspirational story at breakfast REPORTER THE nation was gripped by the horrific ordeal that Alison Botha went through when she was raped, stabbed and left to die in December 1994. Alison will be sharing her story at a breakfast hosted by Die Burger at The Boardwalk ICC on October 22. Botha was abducted by two men and taken to the outskirts of Port Elizabeth where they stabbed her in the abdomen more than 30 times and slit her throat from side to side. Somehow she lived and was able to find her way back to the road where she was rescued by a passing motorist. Alison now uses her experience as an example of the power of the human spirit. In her speaking engagements, she shares with her audiences the horror of being physically attacked, then offers insight into her own recovery and the power of inner strength. In 1998, I Have Life, Alison’s first-person account of her ordeal and recovery, was published and has been a best-seller ever since. A documentary movie on Alison and her ordeal was also recently released. “My philosophy has always been that we may not be able to control the circumstances that we find ourselves in, but we can always control what we do about them. We can always control our own A, B, Cs, which are Attitude, Belief and Choice,” said Alison. The breakfast event where Alison will share her story, will be held from 8am until 12:30pm. Tickets are R200 per person and are available from Helen at Westway Cafe, by calling 041 365 0217 or book online on www.westway.co.za.

Fourwheel Drive Club collect 150 bags of beach rubbish REPORTER EVERY year the Port Elizabeth division of the Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa is granted special permission from the Beach Offices in order to drive their vehicles on the beach. This is only allowed because of the International Coastal Clean-up that was scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 17 this year. However, due to heavy rain the event had to be postponed to a beautiful Sunday the next day which allowed for a more successful clean-up. All 15 vehicles had to be individually registered and had to include all drivers’ and pas-

sengers’ details. The clean-up stretched from Maitlands beach to Gamtoos River Mouth. According to Inge Elliott, a member of the club, approximately 150 bags of rubbish were collected, and included many a plastic crate and lobster catch that wouldn’t fit into a bag. “It also included things that one would not usually expect to find washed up on a beach. A whole pumpkin, a brassiere, numerous toothbrushes, a whale’s vertebrae, and sadly some sea creatures as well,” said Elliott. She added that the committed cleaners comprised adults and children. “Well done to all the committed cleaners of all ages for their backbreaking efforts to help keep our environment clean,” said Elliott.

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life,

My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

Oh my God!! I deeply thank Obed & Noor for helping me to win at a casino. I had tired of people but without help, but after I heard and read in the papers Mr. Cornelius displays his winning about people testifying ticket about Obed and Noor’s free super casino/lotto rings (for gambling). I decided to go and have my last chance as I was in financial crisis. My house was about to be Antoinette was one of repossessed, my car was Mrs. the jackpot winners already repossessed. I couldn’t even manage to put bread on the table, my children were extremely uncontrolable as I wasn’t able to take care of them. I visited Obed and Noor and they charged me R100 consultation.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 5 OCTOBER 2016

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

Unlikely but you never know YOU CAN become badly confused when you set out to write a column on two very different subjects – even though the one thing they have in common is sport, rugby and cricket in this case, at various international levels. If you aren’t careful you might even find yourself getting more than a little confused between the two: perhaps saying for example that the Proteas beat Australia 18-10 at the Wanderers in a hard-fought highly physical struggle. You might even find yourself saying the match was dominated by a stirring return to top-level sport in which Springbok flyhalf, Morné Steyn, scored all the South African team’s points with two dropped goals and four penalties. Help! Right, let’s start again – get it straight

this time. The South African Proteas, in two 50over ODIs in three days put the touring Australian cricket team in their place, largely through the efforts of Proteas wicketkeeper, Quinton de Kock, who started the first head-to-head with a polished 82, having just the week before seen off a weak attack by a touring Irish side. In the first ODI against the Australians, the wicketkeeper was again in good form, this time in front of the stumps, as he hit a career-best 178 from just 113 balls to claim the Man of the Match award. He wasn’t in quite the same frame of mind in the second ODI at the Wanderers, collecting just 22 when caught in the deep. Topping the list, however, on this occasion were JP Duminy (82) and Riley Rossouw (75) to give the Proteas a 2-0 lead in the four-match series. And on present form there aren’t many

bookies who would give you better than evenmoney odds against the Proteas sweeping to a 4-0 result of the series. The form of the likes of captain Faf du Plessis (top-scorer with 111) and De Kock will be followed to the very last ball – not forgetting youngsters like bowlers Andile Phehlukwayo (just 20) and Kagiso Rabada (21). And what does one make of this accomplishment without the skills of Hashim Amla after missing the first match of the series due to the birth of a new baby for the Amla family? Perhaps in time there will be more clarity on this – given his usual value to the Proteas. Switching now to the Momentum Rugby Championship in which the Springboks were generally considered to have been somewhat lucky to scrape to an 18-10 win over the Walla-

bies. Was this in fact so? It certainly is a long way from the best Springbok team produced at this level, but it should be taken into account that defensively it largely did well for itself, managing to limit the Wallabies to a single try. Also the performance by Morné Steyn was of the top order in the sort of game that the cooler-than-ice type this sort of flyhalf is capable of. Luckily for coach, Allister Coetzee, his gamble with using only two backs among his reserves did not backfire. It might well do so if he risks it again, specially against the All Blacks next week. Indeed, few give the Boks any chance against the All Blacks next weekend, but who knows? The strangest things have been happening with the Boks lately. If they keep their heads and play sensibly this might just be the lucky one the Boks pull off. It isn’t likely though, and Springbok rugby and its coach need to take a long hard look at themselves and more than anything concentrate on getting the basics right.

NMMU’s Malgraff tops Premier Hockey League scoring NMMU-Madibaz hockey star Ignatius Malgraff emerged as the leading goal-scorer after the inaugural Premier Hockey League (PHL) drew to a close in Johannesburg recently. Thirteen Madibaz players – 10 men and three women – were chosen for the PHL, which saw five men’s and women’s teams playing in a month-long competition. Malgraff’s seven goals saw him top the list ahead of Lloyd Norris-Jones and Ricky West, who notched five each. The Human Movement Sciences student said being the top scorer was not necessarily his aim.

“Honestly speaking, all I did was take my chances in front of the goals and, in the end, I was the top goal-scorer,” said Malgraff. “I’m happy that I got this award but I couldn’t have achieved it without the help of my teammates.” The 23-year-old striker, who made his debut for the national team two seasons ago, turned out for the Addo Elephants alongside fellow NMMU students Devon Clarke, Chad Durrheim and Joshua August. They qualified for the final where they lost 2-0 to the Maropeng Cavemen, who had Madibaz

player Dillan Langeveld (as well as Michael Abrahams of PE’s Lakeside Cavaliers) in their ranks. While the PHL essentially consisted of franchise squads, each team was allocated four marquee players who turned out for the region in which they were born. The Madibaz players were:

Men: Chad Durrheim, Muzimmal Sheik, Grant Kapp, Devon Clarke, Dillan Langeveld, Joshua August, Chad Cairncross, Kirwin Christoffels, Ignatius Malgraff, Cerezo Comeresamy; Women: Kiona Sequeira, Lauren Nina, Zimasa Dunywa

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Ricciardo wins amidst much drama AT the start of the Malaysian Grand Prix Mercedes were expected to dominate on a circuit tailor-made to emphasize the best aspect of their racing car – and they did. However, Formula 1 isn’t called the most unpredictable sport in the world without reason. For as dominant as Lewis Hamilton was from pole position on Sunday, the unpredictability of the sport hit hard. As Hamilton scampered off into the lead of the race, disaster struck immediately off the line for his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. In a three-way battle for position into turn one Rosberg found himself pointing the wrong way down the track after being tagged by Sebastian Vettel. The Ferrari driver’s race ended a corner later as he pulled over with a broken left-front suspension. For his too optimistic move Vettel has been given a three-place grid penalty for this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. While Rosberg began to make his way through the back, with remarkably no damage, Lewis Hamilton was well in control of proceedings. Despite some initial pressure from Max Verstappen and his alternate strategy, there was never a true threat on Hamilton’s lead. Such was the pace of the number 44 Mercedes that he could, seemingly at will, lap a second faster than anyone else. Still, not even the all-dominant Mercedes can ensure a definite victory. On lap 40 Lewis Hamilton’s aspirations of winning the race literally went up in flames as his Mercedes engine spectacularly expired on the start/finish strait. After his retirement he made some comments to the media, which certainly fanned the flames. Something or someone, he said, doesn’t want him to win the championship. The team and Hamilton later backpedalled on this comment by saying that the driver was referring to a “higher power.” While Hamilton was rightly devastated

S P F

with the failure, it is inconceivable, and frankly absurd, that he would be sabotaged in any way. If not for any other reason than the fact that Mercedes would never want the image of an engine on fire associated with its brand. But there are many other reasons why this conspiracy theory is baseless. How do engineers ensure that an essentially new engine will expire on demand? The show must go on – and it did – with a superb and popular victory for Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. The Aussie driver brilliantly held off his teammate Max Verstappen to take the fourth win of his career. Red Bull’s one-two finish is the first for the team since the 2013 Brazilian GP and snaps a run of 10 victories for Mercedes. In a further show of his class Ricciardo dedicated his win to Jules Bianchi who sadly passed away last year after a horrible crash at the 2014 Japanese GP. Despite a ten second penalty for causing a collision with Kimi Raikkonen, Nico Rosberg was able to recover to third and takes a 23-point lead to the Japanese GP. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen came home in fourth, but was down on power for the majority of the race, which implies that the engine has some sort of damage. It could mean an engine penalty at some point perhaps this weekend in Japan or in Texas. Valterri Bottas finished a solid fifth for Williams ahead of Force India’s Sergio Perez. Fernando Alonso drove a brilliant race from last to finish seventh ahead of Nico Hulkenberg in eighth and teammate Jenson Button in ninth. Renault’s Jolyon Palmer scored the first point of his career with tenth. A 23-point lead for Rosberg seems a big one, but with five races remaining it isn’t a done deal. After the race in Baku he had a similar advantage and it took Hamilton three races to overcome it. If nothing else the Malaysian GP proved that it’s never over until the chequered flag drops.

Swimming season kicks off OCTOBER sees the start of two iconic open water swimming events, the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series and the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics EC Swim Series which offer open water swimmers unprecedented racing and training opportunity. The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series kicks off on Sunday, October 16, as Africa’s largest family beach event, offering something for the whole family with its 7 simultaneous events on alternate Sunday mornings at Hobie Beach in Port Elizabeth. Three beach events available include a 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and a Kids’ 12 years and under 1km Beach Run. These complement the ocean swim events which this year include a 400m, 1km, 2km and 3km swim – all taking place at the same time.

The Ocean Racing Series lucky draw prize giving on the beach immediately after each race day has also drawn a lot of attention over the past years with some fantastic prizes. For the kids 12 years and under a prize giving takes place at 10am and this is followed by the adult prize giving which this year sees a R1 500 cash lucky draw prize each race day. Online registration ahead of the registration function at News Café on Friday 14th is highly recommended on www.oceanracingseries.com. The EC Swim Series returns to Marina Martinique this season and will kick off on Sunday, October 23. Each of the 5 race days within the Series will feature a 10km, 5km, 3km, 1km and 500m swim and is one of the few SSA sanctioned events in the country offering

swimmers the opportunity to register qualifying times for the SA Openwater Swimming Nationals and world championships. The Series is hosted at Marina Martinique opposite the Marina Wharf Bistro with registration open from 8am on race days. See www.ecswim.co.za for further information and to register. Late entry fees will apply for swimmer registrations on the day. Legends head for fish river This weekend sees the Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon, one of the world’s most popular canoe races, taking place in Cradock with legends of the paddling world lining up to try to win. A star-studded field is led by South African paddling icon and 8 time world champion, Hank McGregor, who returns from Ger-

many having won both the 2016 single and double canoe Marathon World Championship titles. This year’s Fish takes place on Friday and Saturday starting at Grassridge Dam and finishing at the Cradock Sports Complex and is guaranteed to be extremely competitive. One of the favourites for the 82km race will be local paddler Greg Louw who was brought up on the banks of the Fish River and probably knows this river better than most. Paddlers will also be excited for the new addition this year of a weir which has been added to take out the Baroda Bridge portage just after the start of day 2. This will ensure cleaner paddling with great rapids as the men and ladies battle it out for top honours and equal prize money for the top 3 finishers in both gender classes.

Victory Raceway to host Stock Car Finals REPORTER THE final round of the Stock Car Racing Regional Championships will take place at Victory Raceway in Walmer on October 8.

The classes that will be competing are the Development, Jnr Hot Rods, 1660’s, 2.1 Modi-

fieds, Super Sixes and American Saloons. The gates will open at 3pm with the racing starting at 6pm. Tickets are R50 for adults and R10 for children under the age of 13. Braai facilities will be available in addition to food stalls. For more info, contact Maggie on 082 656 8830.
