PORT ELIZABETH BAGS HALF IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPS AND BLUE FLAG STATUS

Tourism boost for Bay CARALEE DORFLING

N

ELSON Mandela Bay’s tourism and economy are set to receive a big boost with the announcement last week of the Bay not only being chosen as the the host city of the Half Ironman (Ironman 70.3) World Championships next year, but also that three of its beaches

have achieved the coveted Blue Flag status. Excitement is in the air after the announcement that Port Elizabeth will host the prestigious world championship, where the cream of the world’s best Ironman athletes compete against each other. The event is hosted in a different country each

year and Port Elizabeth competed against Nice in France and Budapest in Hungary to be the host city. The Half Ironman World Championship is expected to attract 6 000 of the world’s best athletes and their support teams, as well as their supporters to Port Elizabeth in September 2018. The announcement was made by Andrew

Messick, chief executive officer of Ironman, in Hawaii on Thursday last week. Keith Bowler, managing director of Ironman SA, believes years of hard work and striving for perfection with the presentation of the last African Ironman Championships in the Bay bore the fruit. Continued on page 2

Education department says it is ready for exams ALL Eastern Cape schools will be expected to conduct a Pledge Signing Ceremony at their respective schools this Friday, October 14. ahead of the end-of-year exams. This according to Provincial Education Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima. According to Mtima, the uniform date of the pledge signing, was aimed at setting the tone for the writing of the examinations for all grades. Mtima said the rationale behind this exercise was to ensure that there was control and curbing of irregularities.

“All public schools participating in 2016 Nation Curriculum Statements (NCS) as well as independent schools writing the state NCS are expected to participate,” said Mtima. The Department of Education has been strengthening its capacity to deliver on its mandate over the past 12 months and it is all systems go, Mtima said. According to the education spokesperson, it was now time for that hard work to bear its fruits for the 94 928 full-time candidates registered. This number is 3 118 more than the previous academic year.

Mtima assured the region that the education department has tightened all screws to limit opportunities for irregularities. This included the appointment of independent chief invigilators at all schools that were implicated in irregularities in the 2014 and 2015 final exams. Mtima said the province will use 18 examination centres this year owing to the increase of learners. Marking would commence on November 28 for some Learning Areas and others on November 30. – NCEBA DLADLA

It shows that what we are doing here is globally recognised. Port Elizabeth itself has already repeatedly proven to be a city where events of international calibre can be offered,” said Bowler. Kevin Hustler, chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, said about 6 000 participants of the championship will be a massive boost for the local economy.

“I have full confidence that we can meet all the requirements of the participants and visitors. “I know organisers earlier this year expressed concern about the metro’s roads, and I’m sure the provincial and municipal government will recognise the urgency of the matter.” Athol Trollip, mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, said preparation in the run-up to the event will start as soon as possible. This includes upgrade work to the Schoenmakerskop road, which will be used mainly

for the cycling leg. According to Kristoff Adelbert, Trollip’s spokesperson, the cost to upgrade the Schoenmakerskop road will amount to about R250 million. “Talks have yet to be held, but we will probably try to obtain money from the provincial government’s budget, because the opportunity is greater than the local municipality.” Mandlakazi Skefile, head of Nelson Mandela Bay tourism, also voiced her excitement about the news, saying they would use the sporting event to promote the city as a world destination. “We will make sure the city and environs’ unique tourist attractions are easily accessible for international visitors. “Planning for wider tourism opportunities that would help to keep international visitors here even longer after the World Championships, will start soon,” said Skefile. )The Half Ironman or 70.3 consists of a 1.9 km ocean swim, 90km bike race and 21.1 km run. The “full” Ironman’s distances are 3.8 km swem, 180.2km bike race and a road race of 42.2 km. Blue Flag status for three Nelson Mandela Bay beaches Meanwhile, it was also announced last week that three beaches in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro have achieved the coveted Blue Flag status. Roslyn Baatjies reports that altogether seven Eastern Cape beaches can proudly fly the prestigious blue flag, which symbolises excellence. The Wildlife and Environment Society South Africa (Wessa) disclosed the country’s Blue Flag beaches last Friday. The Blue Flag beaches in Nelson Mandela Bay, which again meet the stringent Blue Flag requirements, are Humewood, Kings and Hobie beaches. These requirements include excellent bathroom facilities, good (sea) water quality, an educational centre and welltrained lifeguards. “We’ve spent 16 years involved in the project and the status places us on the world tourism map. It’s good to be measured against international standards,” said Kithi Ngesi, Director of Beaches and Resorts at the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality. According to her, provision was made in the department’s capital budget to renovate the Brighton and Wells Estate beaches so that they too can apply for Blue Flag status.

Lorraine infrastructure issues addressed ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL

FREQUENT bursts of water mains which have become a regular sight in Yvette and Aimee roads in Lorraine will be a thing of the past shortly.

Owing to the poor condition of the water mains and the sensitive nature of the surrounding area, it has been decided to include Yvette and Aimee roads in the water reticulation replacement programme. Being replaced are about 150m of 75mm diameter uPVC and 550m of 63mm diameter HDPE water mains. The estimated cost of the works is R700 000 and the work should take a month. Ward 8 DA councillor Gustav Rautenbach said he was excited about the project. “The whole of the Lorraine area’s infrastructure is worn out; however there are certain priority areas that need urgent attention, such as the Yvette and Aimee roads water mains,” he said. “I am grateful that there has been a budget allocated for this project. “This forms part of the mayor’s war on water leaks.” He added that two workers from the Lorraine community had been employed for this project. “Once the water pressure test has been done, the connection into the existing water main will be executed. “On this day, the water supply in Yvette and Aimee roads and the surrounding areas will be shut off. This step is critical as the old main needs to be disconnected and the new main connected simultaneously,” Rautenbach explained. He gave the assurance that the affected residents would be notified in writing 24 hours before the shutdown.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 12 OCTOBER 2016

Gastopower station for Coega IDZ REPORTER THE Department of Energy (DoE) has announced the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) as one of two locations for the first phase of the government’s gas-to-power programme, the Liquefied Natural Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (LNG IPPPP). With 1 000 MW of the programme allocated to Coega, the investment into Nelson Mandela Bay is expected to total R25-billion, according to the Coega Development Corporation. It will also create direct and indirect job opportunities. Richards Bay is the second selected site

with a proposed generational capacity of 2 000 MW. “This project will allow the Coega IDZ to become a diverse energy user, in conjunction with building the local energy sector,” said Sandisiwe Ncemane, CDC Business Development Manager - Energy Projects. “The project will also serve as a significant source of socio-economic growth,” said Ncemane. Ncemane added that the CDC has proved its readiness for gas-to-power and has established itself as the ideal location for both renewable and conventional energy. The CDC conducted a Pre-Feasibility Study under the guidance of the DoE which confirmed suitability and viability (strategic, technical, financial, regulatory, legal and

commercial) of a gas-to-power station to be located at the Coega IDZ. The Coega IDZ, consisting of 14 zones with a total of 11 500 hectares, is already home to the 342 MW DEDISA Peaking Power Plant (PPP), designed for conversion to gas. The DEDISA PPP became operational in 2015 after its construction was completed in record time. The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber said in a media statement that it welcomed the announcement, and in particular the job creation possibilities that will be associated with a megaproject of this nature, as well as the energy security that a gas-to-power project will bring for the region. “In order to grow the economy for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay we need alterna-

tive sources of energy to counter the burden of above inflation electricity prices and ensure security of supply to the broad representation of manufacturers and businesses in the region that necessitate electricity at a globally competitive price,” the statement read. The Chamber said the Eastern Cape has the potential to host a basket of strategic energy projects securing the future energy supply of the region. “Not only will converting more gas to electricity at Coega relieve pressure on the country’s electricity grid, but having gas as an additional utility in the mix, would make industry more cost competitive and therefore boost investor confidence in the region,” the statement read.

Blocked stormwater drains create job opportunities REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro municipality has launched a campaign that will not only result in the clearing of blocked stormwater drains in the Bay, but in doing so, creating job opportunities for more than 220 people through an Extended Public Works Programme. Launching the programme in the Uitenhage Town Hall last week, the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip, called on all the residents of the metro to support the project by refraining from dumping litter and foreign objects into stormwater drains. “We are launching an important programme that seeks to improve our infrastructure and create the much needed jobs for the people of this city, especially the youth. We must make it our responsibility as residents to clean this city and make sure that the city’s infrastructure works

well to support economic growth that will in turn create jobs,” said Trollip. Speaking to the newly employed as he was busy clearing one of the blocked drains in Chase Street, the Executive Mayor told them to take their jobs seriously, because it was important work that would assist the Municipality in delivering world-class infrastructure. Stormwater drain and canal clearing, creating awareness about illegal dumping in drains and removing overgrown grass in ditches and drains is some of the work that will be undertaken by the recently employed people. Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Councillor Rano Kayser, stated, “We have committed ourselves to create work opportunities for the residents, under a very difficult economic climate; this will be achieved through a number of initiatives. We took a conscious decision to start an initiative aimed first at creating work opportunities and also servicing our

infrastructure.” A visibly excited employee of the Programme from Uitenhage, Vanesa Adams, thanked the Municipality for the opportunity. “What makes me happy is that I will be doing a job that will contribute to service delivery and bring a positive change,” she said. Another employee from Motherwell, Siyabulela Nkosiyaphantsi, said, “As a man of the house, being given an opportunity to put food on the table is dignity restored for me. This opportunity will go a long way in changing the fortunes of my family.”

Peter van Kets, international key note speaker and award winning adventurer who survived a trip across Antarctica to the South Pole, will share his story on perseverance, courage, teamwork and the will to win at this year’s event. It will take place at Running Waters in Kragga Kamma Road on October 14 from 6pm to 10pm. In High Gear is a professional platform where individuals have the opportunity to network with other likeminded people, namely, “those who share the same hunger for success and desire to expand their horizons in order to reach new heights of excellence in their careers, said co-founders JonPaul Raper and Russel Ho. In High Gear was launched in 2015 where TV celebrity, Dr Michael Mol, was the main speaker. Chartered accountants, lawyers, doctors, engineers, businessmen and many more made up the more than 250 guests who attended. “We trust that even more professionals will attend this year as this elite professional networking opportunity will not only empower individuals to go beyond their limits, but also contribute to the well-being of others, Raper said. This year, In High Gear will be taking professional networking to a whole new level by creating awareness for the visually impaired, partnering with Retina SA. PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 12 OCTOBER 2016

‘King William’s Town Express’ launched REPORTER LAST Wednesday was another proud moment in the history of Media 24 with the first publication of their brand-new free local newspaper, the King William’s Town Express, a sister publication of Port Elizabeth Express. King William’s Town Express will be distributed to 20 000 homes in King William’s Town and Bhisho every Wednesday. “Just like Port Elizabeth Express, the content of the newspaper is hyperlocal and gives the people of the local communities a voice and platform. The focus will be on school, sport, municipal matters, entertainment and motoring news, as well as any other news that may affect or interest the local community,” said Bettie Giliomee, EP Media Regional Editor. The launch of King William’s Town Express follows hot on the heels of the launch of Queenstown Express in February this year. Port Elizabeth Express also increased its print order with 20 000 copies to a total of 120 000 copies at the beginning of September this year. EP Media is part of Media 24 and publishes eight local newspapers throughout the East-

ern Cape. A total of 310 000 free copies of Express newspapers, i.e. Port Elizabeth Express, Kouga Express, UD News, Queenstown Express, Mthatha Express, Isolomzi Express, UvoLwethu Express and King William’s Town Express, are distributed every week, door to door. As part of the launch celebrations in King William’s Town last week, staff of EP Media and King William’s Town Express took to the streets of the town last Wednesday to introduce the first edition of the newspaper to residents. During the street activation, a cake-cutting ceremony was also held in front of Nick’s Foods SuperSpar and was attended by Buffalo City Metro councillor Ncedo Kumbaca, Portfolio Head of Infrastructure Services at the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Key role players in the different segments of the King William’s Town community also attended a launch function of the newpaper at the Steve Biko Centre last week Tuesday. Here, they did not only meet the staff and correspondents of the newspaper who are based in King William’s Town, but also the staff from the Port Elizabeth office, who will be involved in the production of the newspaper.

LearntoSwim programme needs community’s help ANIKA DE BEER A WATER safety programme that has been running for three years in Nelson Mandela Bay to address the high number of drownings among children, is in need of assistance. Yonwaba Sipliliti and Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA) have been running a Learnto-Swim (LTS) programme since 2013. The programme helps about 2 000 children a year become water safe. Yonwaba is perceived as a hero in his community. He does not have his own transportation and, in addition to offering up his time, he also pays for himself and sometimes even the swimmers to take a taxi to and from practice sessions. The programme teaches children from grade 4 to grade 9 the various aspects of swimming and water safety in 30-minute sessions. The sessions take place from 10:30am to 3:30pm on weekdays during the swimming season which runs from October to March. Yonwaba teaches about 150 to 200 children

a day and often takes them to a gala or the beach on Saturdays. NMBA offers a number of pools to the LTS programme, including those in the Algoa Park, Zwide, Motherwell and North End areas. Most of the children from these parts of Port Elizabeth come from disadvantaged backgrounds and do not know how swim. “Sometimes they show up to practice having not eaten yet and most of them do not have the necessary swimming equipment,” said Yonwaba. The LTS’s mission includes: ) Creating water safety awareness; ) Teaching the participating children to have fun with water and enable them to save others; ) Providing development possibilities in poor communities; ) And demonstrating non-contact rescue. SwimSafe is intended to eventually form part of the school curriculum. The intended outcome of the programme is to change chil-

dren’s attitude towards water, and enable them to teach others the techniques that are taught to them. During the winter months, promising swimmers are taught further techniques in indoor pools. SwimSafe and LTS are currently partnered with the NMBM, NMBA and Ready For Life and they aim to eventually be partnered up with the Department of Education, the Department of Sport, sponsors and any local NGOs that offer swimming lessons as well. They will accept any donations, but are specifically looking for a car for Yonwaba and food and water for the children. To contribute to their cause, contact Kirsten Horton on 074 195 7276 or kirsten@nmbaquatics.co.za.

ADVERTORIAL: WALMER PARK BABY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

Two weeks remain to enter your baby A REMINDER to enthusiastic parents and their babies, between the ages of 0-24 months, to enter the Annual Walmer Park Baby of the year Competition 2016! Two weekends have “flashed” by and we have two weeks remaining, with the last photographs being taken on October 23. Superb prizes have been donated by our generous sponsors – Dischem, the Baby Gym, Toddlers’ Workshop, Edubaby, Francarlo Designer Goldsmith, Kodak Express, Debbie Louw Photography, Edgars, Pick n Pay, Baby Builders, Circular Health, Rain, Dulce café, Capitec Bank, Old Mutual, J-Bay Cloth Nappies and Happy Little Humans. The age categories for the competition are 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months and 19-24 months, all ages being based on the baby’s age as at October 29.

Lynette Van Wyk, one of the 2016 sponsors, who runs the BabyGym and Toddlers’ Workshop in Port Elizabeth, knows the importance of early child development. Toddlers’ Workshop offers classes from three months up to the age of four years, every age group focusing on perceptual skills necessary for that specific age. Toddlers’ Workshop also offers classes for pregnant couples and family evenings, as well as providing moms and dads with a well-equipped library. “At BabyGym we assist in de-stressing and relaxing the baby, facilitating bonding, assisting with sensory awareness and developing body awareness, muscle tone, posture and spatial orientation,” Lynette says. “Our programmes have been designed to guide Mom and Dad from pregnancy,

through birth and through each of the physical development milestones.” To find out more, contact Lynette at, lynette.vanwyk@babygym.co.za. To stand a chance to win fantastic prizes, hurry along to the Edgars Court at the Walmer Park Shopping Centre to have your little one’s smile captured on camera by professional photographer Debbie Louw. You can also view the photographic display of our precious entries so far. Entries will continue to be received there over the next two weekends, Friday until Sunday, between 10am and 2pm, until the competition draws to a close on October 23. The competition costs R50 to enter, with R5 of every entry donated to a children’s charity. You will receive two jumbo-sized photographs, one of which will be displayed in the Edgars Court for the duration of the competition. Once the competi-

Vir meer inligting, bel Sampson by 082 990 6202 of McCarthy by 072 277 0087 of stuur ’n e-pos aan info@dgproductions.co.za. ) Kyk Dans in jou Taal vanaf Desember op kykNET NOU! (DStv-kanaal 146).

According to Hoppé, it is however not only about creating fun. “The Boardwalk takes tremendous pride in its role as a corporate citizen of Port Elizabeth and continuously strives towards excellence to enhance the complex’s appeal so as to promote tourism to Nelson Mandela Bay and thereby contribute to the local economy.” “From the very beginning, The Boardwalk has put in place numerous social and environmental responsibility programmes, striving wherever possible to support organisations and initiatives with causes close to its heart and the heart of the community,” said Hoppé.

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life,

My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

Chalk ’n cheese in rugby and cricket IT’S a good thing former South African cricket captain, Ali Bacher, had his one-on-one TV interview with the great Springbok lock, Frik du Preez, before last Saturday’s Kings Park, Durban, thrashing of the Springboks by the All Blacks and not after it. The great Frik, renowned for his good humour and ever-ready smile was in his element before the start of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship clash. But had the Bacher interview preceded the game it would not have surprised rugby fans if Du Preez had been reduced to tears after watching Springbok captain Adriaan Strauss’s team tumble to the country’s worst ever 57-15 defeat on the rugby field. Hardly a memorable game in his last appearance on home soil in the Green and Gold of the Bok jersey. Think about it – nine tries to none! That sadly was the unbelievable tally by the end of it all. In Frik’s day there were defeats the Boks weren’t exactly proud of – but nothing as humiliating as the more than half-century of points against the Boks whose leaps were growing steadi-

ly weaker. Yet for some time it had seemed the Boks might somehow pull off a miraculous victory. With 17 minutes remaining it seemed there was still the possibility of victory even if – for the second time in a row – the job was left to the trusty boot of flyhalf Morné Steyn. But it was not to be. Suddenly the Springboks found themselves in the quick sands of defeat – Frik du Preez, no doubt sadly shaking his full greying head of hair. The 54 000 cramming the Durban stadium were gradually brought to stunned silence as the All Blacks began to increase the pressure of a remorseless stranglehold. It’s worth recording that – as well as he played in other areas of the game – Kiwi flyhalf Beauden Barrett, in missing several kicks at goal, might have made the final score even higher. Nonetheless, in answer to flyhalf Steyn’s five penalties, Israel Dagg, with two tries, TJ Perenara (2) and Barrett (2) were the New Zealand top scorers. Other tries came from Codie Taylor, Ben Smith and Lionel Squire. Barrett

and Lima Soponga each succeeded with two conversions. What awaits the Boks in the coming tour of the UK? In creaking form such as this, from England in particular, it could still be more woe, one fears. Switching to cricket: the Proteas now deservedly lead the series against Australia with a 4-0 clean slate, with one match left to play. It seemed at first it would be a doddle with three of the Australians back in the pavilion with less than 10 on the scoreboard. At that stage it looked like cricket’s proverbial easy “walk” to victory. But Aussies don’t give up that easily, and it became the Proteas’ turn to struggle with opener, Hashim Amla (2) soon back in the pavilion and opening partner Quinton de Kock (18) soon joining him. However captain Faf du Plessis (69) steadied the ship nicely, leaving it to Rilee Rossouw (33 not out) and nuggety Berhardien (12 not out) to take the Proteas to a six wicket win. Man of the Match with his capturing of six wickets was pace bowler, Kyle Abbott.

TALING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

First Japanese victory for Rosberg NICO Rosberg continues to achieve firsts in 2016 and has now added a first-time victory in Japan. The Mercedes driver, never troubled, strolled towards the chequered flag while teammate Lewis Hamilton dropped further behind in the race for the championship. While Nico Rosberg charged off his pole starting position, Lewis Hamilton was swamped by several cars off the line. The Brit ended up eighth after the first lap after he bogged down on the start with wheelspin. Through consistent driving, and a particularly strong second stint on the hard tyre, Hamilton was able to recover to third. In second place Red Bull’s Max Verstappen faced significant pressure from Hamilton for the second step on the podium. Nevertheless, the 19-year-old did not succumb and more than held his own against the superior Mercedes. The Mercedes team later lodged a protest against Verstappen’s defence into the final chicane on the penultimate lap but has subsequently withdrawn it, seemingly, at the request of Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen deliv-

ered solid drives for Ferrari despite several issues plaguing the team throughout the weekend. For more than three-quarters of the race Vettel was well in contention for the podium but yet another strategic error from Ferrari made sure he didn’t get there. As he battled against Hamilton for the position the call to make his final stop of the race came too late and the position was surrendered to Hamilton. Although Raikkonen qualified third on the grid he was forced to drop to eighth due a gearbox problem. The Finn ultimately recovered to fifth place. Earlier in the weekend, Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene made a point of sitting down with a media outlet for an interview. He made very specific comments in this interview that include the statement that Vettel must earn his seat at Ferrari. There is nothing inherently wrong with this comment. No driver in F1 is absolved from needing to earn his place in the sport. However, this comment and argument isn’t a one-way street. For this reason the question must be asked: What is Ferrari doing to earn Vettel and Raikkonen? The pendulum swung dramatically for last

weeks race winner Daniel Ricciardo who could only manage a sixth place finish seven days later in Japan. The Force India pairing of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg came home in a solid seventh and eighth place respectively. Meanwhile, Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, in ninth and tenth, took the final points on offer for Williams. This result strengthens Force India’s fourth place in the constructor’s standings to ten points over Williams. Mercedes secured the overall title of constructor’s champions with their Japanese GP result. The German marque remains the only team and manufacturer to be champions in the hybrid era of the sport. Effectively Mercedes has also won the driver’s title, as no other driver is mathematically able to take the crown. However, the question remains - will it be Rosberg or Hamilton who takes the ultimate prize? Rosberg’s win in the land of the rising sun gives him a 33-point gap over Hamilton whose title chances have dimmed slightly. However, with 100 points still up for grabs it’s far too soon to call this race.

EP team wins trophy in Get the whole family fit with sevens rugby tourney fun in the sun at ocean racing MICHAEL ZOETMULDER

Kicking off at 9am, Africa’s largest family beach event offers a selection of 7 events to take part in. After 11 seasons in the city, Season 12 looks set to be bigger than all the previous ones. For the youngsters from nappies to 12 years old, there is the popular Kids’ 1km Beach Run/Walk and a popular lucky draw prize-giving, this year including a R500 cash lucky draw prize. For others who enjoy the beach, there’s a 5km Beach Run or a 5km Beach Walk whilst for those that enjoy the sea the Series offers a 400m, 1km, 2km and 3km ocean swim. A 400m swim is a new addition to the programme this year.

THE Eastern Cape’s u/17 rugby team won the Shield trophy at the SARU Interprovincial Sevens Rugby Tournament which took place at Durban High School from September 30 to October 1. According to head coach, Neville Botha, the team was on fire. “The boys played an excellent brand of rugby and they applied the fundamentals skills correctly,” Botha added.
