Dolosse boost for SMMEs REPORTER

THE South African National Roads Agency Soc Ltd (SANRAL) has empowered SMMEs in the Eastern Cape to manufacture dolosse. The roads agency which has a responsibility to protect its asset against destructive wave action is manufacturing the dolosse which are used to protect the sea-facing N2 and the parallel railway line adjacent to the Settlers Interchange in Port Elizabeth from destructive waves. The dolosse are interlocking blocks of concrete and are manufactured at the Markman Casting Yard in Markman. “Twenty people, five each from the four SMME subcontracting companies, received training. The four SMME subcontracting companies were selected for the 17 SMME packages which were identified and advertised as part the N2 Bramlin to Soutwerke (PE Bypass) special maintenance project,” said Thabiso Ngozwana, SANRAL Southern Region project manager. Training is an integral part of SANRAL projects including Community Development Projects. The one-month training was held in July this year and included practical sessions on cleaning and assembling concrete formwork, basic concrete technology, concrete mixing, placing, finishing and testing. The training was provided by Meroe Skills Development, at the Heart Lights Training Centre in Walmer. The project’s main concrete subcontractor is Dynaform. “It was important for SANRAL to host the concrete training and to empower local SMMEs in the manufacture of precast concrete products and to increase local participation on the N2 project.” The course was offered as part of SANRAL’s Small Contractor Development, Training and Community Participation Pro-

gramme and is aimed creating sustainable enterprises. Portia Ngcwabe, who has a post graduate degree in management and is the owner of Phefong Construction, had five of her staff attend the concrete training programme. “By attending the workshop my staff can produce good products and do any concrete work. In the past, the staff would receive onthe-job training from the contractors, but this was an opportunity for them to gain skills and a qualification,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for black women, especially in the civil engineering industry which is dominated by men,” said Ngcwabe. Nwabisa Mgubasi, a qualified architectural draftsman and co-owner of Sokhazimla

Trading CC also attended the concrete training and said she now knows how to mix concrete properly. “I learned the ratio of how to get the different strengths of concrete,” Mgubasi said. “This is an amazing opportunity and I am now also in a position to impart my knowledge to the next person,” she said. Nathi Lusizi who works for Magna Civils said the course was very informative. “I not only know how to mix and make concrete, but also know how important it is to vibrate the concrete to make sure there are no bubbles trapped in the concrete mix.” Eight of the 2,5 ton dolosse are manufactured daily, cured on site and transported to the final placement next to the Settlers interchange.

Organised business welcomes hefty charges for damaged municipal cables REPORTER THE Business community has welcomed a decision by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to implement hefty charges against contractors who damage municipal cables in the city.

During a Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Council meeting last month, Council approved miscellaneous charges – with effect from September 1, 2016 – for contractors who damage electricity cables in the Metro. These damaged cables have a detrimental effect - not only on the municipality - but also on businesses operating in Nelson Mandela Bay. “In particular, big businesses can ill afford disruptions in power supply to industry due to damaged cables which hamper the manufacturing base of our city,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Kevin Hustler. Electricity and Energy Task Team Chairman Angus Clark said the implementation of the miscellaneous charges will ensure that the many contractors digging in municipal servitudes adhere to the service drawings that are provided to them as part of their contract. “In the past, contractors have damaged services without consequence and many have ignored the drawings provided or have not dug pilot holes to establish the exact location of services. “They have simply dug their trenches with mechanical devices, often damaging high-voltage cables, water lines and sewers without concern to the users of these services and the cost to industry as a result of power outages, power dips or interruption to water.

“We are very happy with this inclusion and positive that it will go a long way in improving the reliability of our utility services,” Clark said. R120 000 or more charged for damaging cables Based on potential income loss to Council together with the cost of repairs, these charges will be recovered from “all contractors who damage municipal underground cables.” The specific charges vary from R1 000 for damage to any low-voltage cable up to R120 000 for damage to 132 000 Volt cables. In addition to these amounts, the miscellaneous charges will also include the cost of repair to the affected cable. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Chief of Staff to the Mayor, Kristoff Adelbert, said the municipality’s infrastructure was of critical importance to the smooth running of the Metro. “We are committed to delivering better services and can only do so if service providers conduct their work with care. “We are confident that these newly instituted charges will act as a deterrent, preventing further disruptions and ensuring the preservation of our municipal infrastructure, so that business, industry and residents can conduct their affairs without hindrance,” Adelbert said. In cases where the excavation occurred without authorisation or policy was not followed, Council reserves the right to institute further steps against the party concerned. It was also resolved by Council that the same provision should be made for damage to underground sewerage and water pipes.

Confidence boost for Eastern Cape business REPORTER

and the fact that it is doing well certainly indicates that other businesses are starting up or expanding too. It is also a trend which our sales teams have picked up on.” SOX PE general sales manager Dalen Davidson said customers were increasingly technologically savvy. “Although their spending is more circumspect in a tough economy, they are still investing in the best possible solutions to grow their businesses,” said Davidson, adding that the company had many long-standing customers throughout the region. Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Kevin Hustler has congratulated SOX on its robust growth. “We are delighted that a business which started in Nelson Mandela Bay has grown its footprint, sales and revenue in what still remain challenging economic times,” said Hustler. “We are proud of our Nelson Mandela Bay companies achieving these wonderful milestones despite the challenges experienced in our local economy.” Established as Canon EC in Port Elizabeth in 1998, the business expanded its regional offices to East London in 2000. Three years later, it opened its SouthWestern Districts branch in George and Knysna. Today, it forms part of a national network of 45 SOX service centres, offering a full service that includes the sale and rental of office machines, consumables, data and CCTV security. “Our rebranding and restructuring process has also allowed us to expand our business beyond the familiar Canon connection to include other international brands such as HP and Samsung,” said Wilson.

DESPITE a tough economic climate, many small to medium businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay as well as the Eastern Cape are experiencing robust growth. This is according to leading Eastern Cape business solutions company, Smart Office Connexion (SOX) – formerly known as Canon EC – which has reported record trading figures for 2016. The company, which has 160 staff in the Eastern and Southern Cape and a nationwide staff complement of 1 560, has outstripped previous growth figures in its 18year history as a business-to-business supplier of office machines such as printers, copiers and PABXs, as well as software and technical support services. In reaction to the growth and the expansion of its clients in the region – small to medium businesses from George to East London – SOX has invested R9 million in expanding its fleet of 49 vehicles, with 34 new service vehicles for its growing technical teams. According to SOX executive Alan Wilson, the business has reported 20% growth in sales and a 15% increase in service revenue this year alone. Earlier this year the Port Elizabeth office was awarded the 2016 PMR Africa Golden Arrow award for service excellence, while the George office earned the highest accolade, the Diamond Arrow, at the regional awards. “Despite a fairly tumultuous year for the Rand, our business is better than ever,” said Wilson. “The very nature of our offering is to provide turnkey office solutions,

The booklet, written by Simon Sonderup, a teacher at Grey High School, was first published in 2014. Grey partnered up with Paul Leonard, a well-known Certified Financial Professional (CFP) and the presenter of the popular MoneyTalk on Algoa FM, and his son, Brydon, a top third-year BSC student at NMMU, to make the app a reality. Brydon created the application, called Grey High App, from his Hello World Code business. Don’t Be Fooled, Make Smart Decisions is essentially a financial literacy booklet. GREY High School’s life skills/financial literacy booklet Don’t Be Fooled, Make Smart Decisions has just been launched as a mobile application.

the booklet is aimed at school leavers and graduates in the hope that they will avoid making financial mistakes as they begin their journey as part of the working class. From a school’s perspective, the booklet complements the Maths Literacy and Life Orientation curricula. Schools can use the content as a point of departure for teaching the concepts in these two subjects. The ultimate goal of the booklet, however, is to increase awareness about financial responsibility and to point out the dangers of getting into debt. It is Grey’s hope that the booklet will play a role in reducing the personal debt incurred by many South Africans in the future. The application, which is available in the same three languages as the booklet, was launched on Thursday, October 20, and is available on the Google Play Store free of charge.

Former drug addicts turn over new leaf REPORTER A GROUP of substance abusers in the Gelvandale area have been given a new lease on life recently after attending the Anathallo 10 Step Recovery and Life Skills Impartation Workshop. The programme, written and presented by Ignacio Schneider, aims to assist substance abusers towards recovery and restoration. It couples biblical principles with experience of substance abuse and formal rehabilitation. Schneider himself was a substance abuser for 12 years. The first workshop, which started on October 10, was attended by Weldon Mentoor, Sagren Erasmus, Georgia Langford, Lester Stevens, Christopher Moss and Jillian Williams. “The visible change in the attendees after merely days was amazing. From scruffy to clean-shaven, from sagging shoulders to heads held high, the change of heart has become apparent on their exterior,” said Schneider. Facilitator Lucius Hufkie commented that Anathallo focuses not only on the physical and emotional effects of substance abuse, but mainly on the spiritual aspect. Abusers do not

only damage their bodies, but they lose selfconfidence and hope. “These substances erode the good from every area of an abuser’s life,” Hufkie continued. Extensive media coverage in the first week has sparked the demand for more workshops, particularly in other parts of the Northern suburbs. Therefore, subsequent workshops will be held as follows: . At the West End Community Centre, from October 24 to 28 . At the Booysens Park Community Hall from October 24 to 28 . And at the Harvest Christian Centre in Jacksonville from October 31 to November 4. All workshops are held from 8am until 2pm daily. The cost of the workshop is R500 per participant, inclusive of all learning material and catering. A call is being made for sponsorship. “Not everyone who expresses interest in the programme can afford it. We appeal to our communities to support the initiative and in doing so, help put a life back on the right side of the tracks,” said Schneider. For more info or to register, contact Ignacio Schneider on 073 302 7666.

Winnings enable man to send son back to varsity MORNÉ DU RANDT A CELL C subscriber from Port Elizabeth will be able to send his eldest son back to university after winning R500 000 in the Cell C Mega Hour competition. Nzamo Goduka (52) had to withdraw his son from university due to financial constraints. Thanks to Cell C, he is now able to put his son’s future back on track. Goduka, who works at a removals company, has been with Cell C since 2004 as a prepaid cus-

tomer and played Mega Hour whenever he had airtime. “I am thrilled with my winning and will use the money to buy a house and take my two children to university. I am very pleased to be able to take my eldest son back to university as he had to drop out last year due to financial constraints,” said the overjoyed Goduka. Muneer Abader, Senior Manager: Regional Commercial Sales, said at the cheque handover, “Cell C have had six grand prize winners from various backgrounds over the past four years, varying from R500 000 to R1 million.

“From a breadwinner looking after her family, to a retired husband and father whose business had closed down, the prize money has been life-changing for all the winners. Like Cell C, Mega Hour is also about changing lives and giving back to the community.” Cell C’s national Mega Hour winner, Nzamo Goduko, shows a thumbs up to his winnings. Nzamo will use the money to buy a house and send his two children to university after winning R500 000 in the Cell C Mega Hour competition. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Kragga Kamma Golf Club turns 15 REPORTER THE Kragga Kamma Golf Club is turning 15 years old soon and will be celebrating the occasion with a special IPS competition on November 5. The golf course was founded in 2001 and started off as a basic and modest 9-hole layout. It is privately owned and has always targeted social golfers. During its existence, the course has undergone many revisions. It was an 18-hole course once before reverting back to only 9 holes. “Most of the holes are challenging and the greens are requiring your close attention, to make that vital putt fall. All this makes the golf course to be affectionately known as one of golf’s hidden gems,” said Frans Schellingerhout, President of the Kragga Kamma Golf Club. Players can choose between three different T-box markers to suit themselves and the challenges presented. It is, therefore, possible to play a less challenging round of golf should one wish to avoid the blue markers at the back.

The Club is part of the Eastern Province Golf Union (EPGU) and is registered with South African Golf Associations (SAGA), which means that affiliated players can swipe their scores into the national network. While golf is the key focus of the club, provision is also made for squash, table tennis, pool, darts and bowls enthusiasts. The Committee is planning to make this year’s anniversary golf day a joyous one for all competitors. Players of all levels are welcome to join in the fun, even non-affiliated players. There will be sponsored T-boxes and greens and the regular ‘watering holes’ as well. “We are looking forward to the anniversary golf day and the owners and committees are looking forward to welcome all our members, friends and patrons at the celebration,” said Schellingerhout. The golf club has already received a number of exciting prizes for the IPS competition that will take place on November 5. Bookings are now open and can be made at 041 379 4155.

shall, wat my passie deel.

Winner of doctor’s painting announced ANIKA DE BEER PHILLIP de Vos, a General Practitioner at Medicross Westering, has once again put his brush to canvas in aid of a charity. Every year, De Vos, who only paints as a hobby, does a painting which is then raffled in aid of a charity. This year, the chosen charity was Wings and Wishes, an organisation that is dedicated to transport-

ing critically ill children to receive the needed treatment. The painting, which was on display at Medicross in Westering while it was being raffled, was handed over to its new owner, Leon Geel, on October 12. The fundraiser managed to raise R6 000 which will be used to pay for the mercy packs given to the Wings and Wishes children who travel to hospitals outside their home town.

The market aims to create awareness about going green, being environmentally friendly and living in a sustainable manner. Most of the stallholders at the market sell items that are either locally crafted, revamped, reused, re-purposed or recycled. Some of the stallholders include Cat Care, the Animal Welfare Society, the Children’s Feeding Fund and Isithembiso Babies Home. The market, however, is not only a space to buy and sell things. It also provides the opportunity for people to donate any goods they no longer need at

the drop-off points at the charity stalls. Anyone is welcome to bring their gently worn second-hand books, clothes, baby goods, household items, pet items and anything else they would like to donate. The market gives a free stand to charities who want to open a stall of their own. There is still time to get a stall for anyone interested in participating in the market. Sassy food stands, food trucks and entertainment for the young ones will also be available for any PE folk who want to enjoy a lovely Sunday outing. The next market will take place on October 30 at the Walmer Town Hall from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free. For more info, contact Claudia on 072 046 4444 or theresecondsmarket@gmail.com.

Halloween party to be held in aid of animal welfare ANIKA DE BEER THE Bay City Rockers band, who have been performing for more than 40 years, will be offering up a night to aid in raising money for animal welfare. Although all of the band members are selfemployed in their respective fields of commerce, they play music as a passion, sideline and hobby, specialising in 60s, 70s and 80s rock classics. To give back to the Eastern Cape community, the Bay City Rockers endeavour to per-

form a number of charity shows throughout the year. One such performance will take place on October 29 at an Animal Welfare Fundraiser disguised as a Halloween party. The Bay City Rockers will provide live music at no cost. The party will start at 7pm at the Eddie Macs at VP Club. Prizes will be given to the best dressed guests of the night. The donation entry fee is R30 and guests are requested to bring a food donation for dogs or cats. Table bookings are recommended and can be made at 083 225 1093.

‘A Spartacus of Africa’ ballet staged at Opera House THE ballet, A Spartacus of Africa, featuring the original music of Khachaturian, has returned due to popular demand and will open at the Port Elizabeth Opera House on November 3. It will be the first of several upcoming seasons of this all-new touring version of the ballet that captivated audiences when it premiered last year in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Renowned choreographer, Veronica Paeper, re-designed her original ballet that she created for The Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB) Ballet in 1984, incorporating contemporary dance into the classical ballet style. South Africa’s most exciting and talented dancers from all around the country make up the cast of twenty, further perpetuating The South African National Dance Trust’s (SANDT) collaborative approach. It has long been Paeper’s ambition to reproduce this ballet which is arguably her finest. Drawn to the similarity between Rome’s treatment of their captives and the many downtrodden peoples in Africa, Paeper has given the ballet a mythical African slant, thus naming it, A Spartacus of Africa. The story mirrors the original ballet about slaves fighting for freedom, Spartacus’s deep love for his wife Phrygia and Aegina’s guile helping her lover, Crassus, to quell the revolt. Spartacus, the Thracian gladiator who escaped in 73 BC to lead a major slave uprising against the Roman Empire, has inspired revolutionaries, politicians and writers ever since then. The fact that he was defeated in no way detracts from his courage and that of his fellow slaves in pitting themselves against mighty Roman legionaries led by the General, Cras-

sus. Nelson Mandela’s fight for freedom, for which he and others were prepared to die, links to the message behind Spartacus. Innovative set designs capturing the spirit of Africa were created by KMH Architects, while ingenious costumes by the late Dicky Longhurst, an award winning designer, allow the athleticism of the dancers to be vividly dramatized. A Spartacus of Africa Port Elizabeth cast: . Amari – The title role will be shared by Casey Swales, who danced the same role at the world premier season of A Spartacus of Africa in 2015, and Juan Carlos Osma . Fayola – Dyana Acuna and Elzanne Crause, a Capetonian, will share the role of Fayola . Nadira – Kristin Wilson . Nagash – The role of Amari’s nemesis will be danced by Xola Willie and Milwhynne. Both are from the Eastern Cape . Badu – Lwanele Masiza, also from the Eastern Cape, will dance the role of Badu . Isenyaya – Alfonzo Freemantle will dance the role of the African Spirit. Osma and Acuna are both Cuban and will appear in the production by kind permission of Joburg Ballet. The production of A Spartacus of Africa was made possible by a grant of R949 000 from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC). Promising to be a dynamic spectacle, the opening night performance of A Spartacus of Africa on November 3 will be the first major dance production for Port Elizabeth’s beautiful newly renovated Opera House where the season will run until November 6. Ticket prices range between R100 and R220 with group and special discounts available. All bookings can be made through Computicket on 086 1 915 8000.

GURANTEED OR MONEY BACK

I am Lerato, a mother of four. I suffered a lot before I met this powerful man. I was so stressed after losing my money to another sangoma who promised to help me. I called Prof Badawai and explained to him my problems of which he gave me many options like SHORTBOYS that put money in the ACCOUNT. RATS TO PUT MONEY IN THE HOUSE, MAGIC WALLET TO GET R15 000 EVERY DAY AND to WIN GAMBLING. I chose the SHORTBOYS TO PUT MONEY IN MY ACCOUNT AND after 2 hours I saw the transaction of R1 000 000 (1 million) has been deposited into my account. I paid Prof Badawi R100 000. I also chose THE WALLET to get R15 000 EVERYDAYAND pay every week R20 000. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME CONTACTING PEOPLE WHO CAN’T HELP YOU - CALL HIM 063 016 1021 X1RPX5HR-PX170816

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life,

My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

TALKING F1:NATALIE LE CLUE

America brings victory for Hamilton LEWIS Hamilton has returned to winning ways with a measured drive to victory at the United States Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton ran a perfectly controlled race to take his 50th career win and with it a fifth victory on American soil at the Circuit of the Americas. While the perception from the outside made it look like an easy afternoon for Hamilton, the Mercedes driver admitted to being “petrified” that his car would suffer a reliability issue as it did in Malaysia earlier in the season. “I was just the whole race concerned the car was not going to make it,” said Hamilton. “Right up until the line, I was just in fear of the same thing, the same feeling I had, the sound I heard in Malaysia. So, I was grateful the car made it across the line.” Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg was an ever-present second ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in third, but he had to work for it. The German dropped behind Ricciardo at the start of the race and faced serious

pressure from Max Verstappen after the first round of stops. Nevertheless, the rub of the green went Rosberg’s way and he emerged in second. Aussie driver Ricciardo was on his way to the second step on the podium, but the deployment of the virtual safety car afforded Rosberg a de facto free pitstop and, crucially, track position ahead of Ricciardo. As if to add insult to serious misfortune, the virtual safety car was deployed to recover the stricken Red Bull of his teammate Max Verstappen who suffered a catastrophic gearbox failure. There was a second high-profile retirement in the form of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen as an embarrassing mistake from the pit crew at the Finn’s final stop meant he left the box with a loose wheel that eventually led to his retirement. As one side of the Ferrari garage suffered a costly self-inflicted blunder, Sebastian Vettel was able to bring his Ferrari home in a lonely fourth in what was the best the team could have hoped to achieve regardless of the circumstances. Fernando Alonso embraced the Texas

spirit as he delivered a bigger and better performance than McLaren has seen in a while. The Spaniard’s feisty driving showed his fighting spirit as he battled his way into fifth while Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz finished sixth ahead of Williams Felipe Massa in seventh. Force India driver Sergio Perez recovered brilliantly to eighth after a first corner incident while Jenson Button made up ten places to finish ninth in the McLaren. The Haas F1 Team became the first American team to score a point on home soil as Romain Grosjean collected tenth place. The Grand Prix in the lone star state delivered good news all around for Mercedes. The team secured its fifth one-two victory of the season and Lewis Hamilton stemmed Rosberg’s momentum and sliced his championship lead to 26 points. The good news for Rosberg is that he delivered exactly what he needs with his second place finish. Nico Rosberg’s lead in the championship has been sliced to 26 points with the Mexican Grand Prix just days away.

Beach run for kids this Sunday morning X1RW1BWG-PX261016

THE popular fortnightly kids’ 1km beach run takes place again this Sunday morning as part of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series. Hosted on PE’s premier beach, Hobie Beach, the run/walk is for children 12 years and under with the youngest participant registered so far this season being Zoe Zoetmulder at just 14 months. The Series, Africa’s largest family beach event, takes place on mostly alternate Sunday mornings throughout Summer with round 2 starting at 9am this Sunday. Registration is a once-off process, ideally online to avoid the late entry fee of R30. There is no registration fee this season, with the online entry covering the first day’s race fees.

Once registered a Series number is allocated so that on all race days, one just reports for entry and pays that day’s respective entry fee without having to reregister. Entry into the Kids’ 1km Beach Run is just R40 with a late entry fee of R30 applying if not registering online prior to the races. All participants in the Kids’ 1km Beach Run receive an aQuellé drink and a finisher’s medal and are included in a lucky draw prize-giving starting at 10am on the beach. The top 3 age group winners are also presented medals at the kids’ prize-giving with around 15 awesome lucky draw prizes. The top prize is R500 cash.

Also on offer at the Series is a 5km Beach Run and 5km Beach Walk for all ages while the open water swimmers can compete in a 400m swim, 1km swim, 2km swim and 3km swim with medals for the top 3 overall place holders in each race. Lucky draw prize-giving of these events takes place on the beach just after the kids’ prize-giving. The feature lucky draw prize is R1 500 cash. See www.oceanracingseries.com for further information and registration. Online registration closes 5pm on Thursday with late entries received at the beach on Sunday from 7:30am. All races start at 9am.

Aquabear swim club dominate marina swim MICHAEL ZOETMULDER FOR top local open water swimmer, Pearson High School’s Ian Venter, it was back to winning ways at Sunday’s start to the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics’ EC Swim Series hosted at Marina Martinique and the rising of another potential open water star in Credence Pattinson, both from the Aquabear swim club in Port Elizabeth. With just under 120 swimmers taking part in the first round of the Swimming SA sanctioned Series, Venter dominated the 5km swim winning in an SA qualifying time of 1hr 3min 47sec comfortably ahead of Bay Eagle Swim Club (BEST) member Daniel Jones and team mate Cole Craig while Kirsten Marriott (BEST) won the ladies’ 5km race in 1hr 5min 25 sec, some 30 seconds ahead of PEA’s Jessica Canter and Infinity Swim Club’s Hannah Haswell. Haydn Holmes and Amica de Jager, both from the Liquid Lines Club in Cape St Francis, tackled the 10km swim finishing together in 2hrs 20minutes, well within the SA qualifying time for this marathon distance. In the 3km swim, Pattinson

won in a fast time of 38min 33seconds and was followed home by team mate Nicolas Adam and Infinity swimmer Cullen Biddulph (who at just 14 years is another fast up and rising open water swimmer). The girls’ 3km swim was dominated by East London club Aquanova with Tayla Botha winning in a time of 42min 32seconds from Chloe Velde and Madison Malherbe. The 1km swim was won by 11year-old Britney Brown (15min 16sec) from Tayla-Paige and Delwen Henderson while in the boys it was Danre Du Preez (15min 34sec) from MC Strydom and Connor Craig. Also held on the morning was a 500m swim which was won by Wietske van der Westerhuizen from Greg Hough and Ben Joubert with Emma Lacey winning the girls’ 500m swim from Megan Hough and Katy Hofmeyr. The next EC Swim Series event takes place at Marina Martinique in two weeks’ time. See www.ecswim.co.za for further information and to register online. Registration closes on the Thursday afternoon before race weekend and late entry fees apply.

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

Who knows – it might just happen this way! THEY call it “Sticking Your Neck Out”. So let’s do it. The Springboks will win at least three of the four matches of their overseas tour starting with the so-called “friendly” against the Barbarians at Wembley on November 5. Why not? All sorts of weird and wonderful things happen on that day – it’s Guy Fawkes Day after all, remember? The day in modern times when the heavens are set alight with all kinds of colourful explosions. A day when fireworks with thunderous bangs blitz the skies, dressing the darkness with garments of every shade and shape. It is, too, a day that regularly celebrates not only all that is best about rugby football – its bravery, its sportsmanship, its stamp of courage; also its daring from players who set out, more than anything, to entertain. Then comes the tough grind, you might say in this case the “serious” side of such a tour – for the Springboks coming at a time when

South African rugby so desperately needs to prove itself once more. Make no mistake, the talent is there in “Spades”, as the saying goes, both in the “friendly” opening 80-minute clash with the Baa-baas and the more demanding fixture against England at Twickenham, followed by Italy on November 19 and winding up the following weekend against Wales at the Principality Stadium. The toughest encounter of the four, without doubt, will be the Twickenham date, specially under the guidance of former Australian coach, Eddie Jones. Quite how seriously Bok coach Allister Coetzee is taking this tour as a stepping stone for the Boks to elevate the nation back to the greatness of bygone years is demonstrated by the manner in which he has chosen two squads for the tour. For the opener against the Barbarians, 30 have been named; for the Test squad, 33. Specially intriguing are players who have

been named for both the opening “friendly” and the three Tests – key players the coach believes who could be keystones to the Boks’ success. To name just a few: Patrick Lambie, the lock pairing of Eben Etzebeth and PieterSteph du Toit, hooker and captain Adriaan Strauss, tight-head prop Tendai (Beast) Mtawarira. Also Ruan Combrinck is back in the mix, though several regulars are missing because of injury, among them Handré Pollard, Cobus Reinach and Bismarck du Plessis. Says coach Coetzee, “It’s part of planning for the future. The Barbarians match is a great occasion for the younger lads to show they belong at this level.” Baa-baas match: Cheslin Kolbe, Jama Ulengo, Jesse Kriel, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Sergeal Petersen, Ruan Combrinck, Francois Venter, Damian de Allende, Tian Schoeman, Pat Lambie, Rudy Paige, Faf de Klerk, Piet van Zyl, Nizaam Carr, Roelof

Smit, Uzair Jean-luc du Preez, Oupa Mohoje, Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, RG Snyman, Lood de Jager, Lourens Adriaanse, Trevor Nyakane, Thomas du Toit, Lizo Gqoboka, Tendai Mtawarira, Adriaan Strauss, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi. The Test squad: Johan Goosen, Pat Lambie, Ruan Combrinck, Sergeal Petersen, Willie le Roux, Jessie Kriel, Lionel Mapoe, Francois Venter, Bryan Habana, JP Pietersen , Damien de Allende, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etstebeth, Lood de Jager, Franco Mostert, Vincent Koch, Steven Kitshoff, Jannie du Plessis Trevor Ngakane Tendai Mtawarira, Adriaan Strauss Bongi Mbonambi, Malcolm Marx. Finally, there was no doubt about it – Free State Cheetahs in defeating the Blue Bulls 3616 in last week’s Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein were at least twice as good as their opponents, as simple maths shows. The Cheetahs are growling, well on their way back to the big time.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 26 OCTOBER 2016

Burgess Cup to celebrate 100th anniversary REPORTER THIS year marks the 100th anniversary of the Burgess Cup Bowling tournament and arrangements are underway to make this an especially exciting year. The first ever tournament was played in Port Elizabeth on October 7, 1916, between the Port Elizabeth Scottish Association and the Port Elizabeth Bowling Club. The latter ended up claiming the victory for that year. The tournament originated as an idea suggested at a PE Scottish Association committee meeting, which was held in August 1916. The idea was to raise money for the war funds. The match proved to be so successful that it was decided at the next annual general meeting of the Association to be held annually in aid of a local or national charity. The late Past Chief, John Burgess, suggested

that a cup, which he had presented many years previously as a highland dancing trophy and which was no longer required for that purpose, be reinscribed and used as a floating trophy for this annual match. This was unanimously agreed to and the trophy was named the “Burgess Cup”. This year’s tournament will be held in aid of the Childhood Cancer (CHOC) Foundation. Besides the tournament itself, additional funds will be raised by means of a cake stall and hampers that will be raffled at the event. Members of the Algoa Caledonian Pipe Band will entertain the guests at a cocktail party on November 4. The cocktail party will officially kick off the tournament, which will take place on November 5 and 6 at the PE Bowling Club in Park Drive. Tickets to the cocktail party are R70 per person and can be purchased by contacting Margaret Thompson on 082 320 3145.

THE NMMU’s Madibaz Rowing Club delivered some impressive early-season results when they competed in the recent Knysna Midway Regatta. Going up against clubs and school teams from the Eastern and Western Cape, the Madibaz rowers took three first places, one second and a third place. NMMU Rowing Club chairman Wade Murison said they were delighted with their results even though regular rivals such as UCT, Stellenbosch and Rhodes were not able to attend. “The competitors in our senior events were Alfred Rowing Club from Cape Town, Buffalo Rowing Club from East London and the Zwartkops and PE clubs from Port Elizabeth,” he added. He said Madibaz had six rowers who competed in the senior (ages 19 to 26) and masters’ (27 and above) categories, where all races were contested over 1 000m. Louis Nel showed good early-season form for the Madibaz, taking first place in the men’s A division single sculls race and achieving a similar result with Sebastiaan Marx in the A division double sculls. In the double sculls race, they edged out colleagues Murison and Dane Walker for the win. Murison walked away with the title in the men’s masters’ singles sculls, while Karl Whitlock and Alasdair MacPhail were third in the men’s B division double sculls. MacPhail was fourth in the B division single sculls race. Murison said the Madibaz club regularly took part in the Knysna regatta, but it had been the first time for several of their members.

“It was a great start to the season and we are looking forward to a few more events that are coming up.” He said they would be taking part in the ECRA Champs Regatta in East London on the Buffalo River on October 29 and their provincial rivals, Rhodes University, had confirmed that they would be racing there as well. “So, we are looking forward to even harder and closer racing at the end of the month. All races at this regatta will be over 2 000m,” Murison added. Murison said there would be a break in November and December before the programme resumed in January. “Our first event next year will be the Settlers Sprints Regatta on the Settlers Dam in Grahamstown on January 28 over 1 000 metres. “That will be followed by the Buffalo Regatta in East London on February 17 and 18.”
