“Ek is baie kliëntgeoriënteerd, en my kliënte skakel graag met my oor hul aflewerings.”
– ODETTE PARFITT

One such victim is Ivy Janse van Rensburg, a resident of Greenshields Park. She lost about R1 500 of her SASSA money in February and she is still not quite certain what happened. Janse van Rensburg, whose grandson lives with her, tried to withdraw her SASSA money from an ATM, only to be told that she had insufficient funds. She and her grandson were confused and thought for a moment that the ATM had swallowed her card. She then phoned the number on the back of her ABSA card for Gridrod Bank, who provides banking services for SASSA, and requested a bank statement. They refused to give her a statement. Eventually, they paid her the amount she had ‘lost’, but she was not given a reason why the money was not in her account. “I was devastated. We need money to survive and I have my grandson to look after,” she said. According to Janse van Rensburg, she is not the only one to whom this has happened. Her neighbour across the street has also noticed irregularities regarding her SASSA account. “I told her to report it to the Walmer police station. I was able to sort my problem out on my own, but some of these people are dependents. My neighbour is in a wheelchair. What is she supposed to do?” Janse van Rensburg said. The most recent of the SASSA scams was reported on October 27 by PE Express’s sister publication, UD News, when it was revealed that several SASSA beneficiaries had received fraudulent telephone calls requesting an update of their details and their PIN numbers. Thamsanqa Singeni, Eastern Cape SASSA spokesperson, firmly replied, “SASSA does not ask for personal details, account details and pins over the phone. Nor does the agency update its database telephonically. SASSA does not do business outside its offices.” ) Sengeni encouraged beneficiaries to report incidents like the above to law enforcement agencies or by calling the SASSA toll-free number - 080 060 1011 or by visiting the nearest local office.

Metro threatens: Pay on time or electricity will be cut
Even state institutions will answer to outstanding and/or late payments. At least R2 billion in payments are still outstanding, while numerous consumers do not pay their bills on time. “From now on, users will have to settle their debt within 15 days after the deadline or their power will be disabled,” said Executive Mayor Athol Trollip last Tuesday (November 1) in Port Elizabeth. He added that water supply will also be affected. “Access to water is, however, a constitutional right. Consequently, water supply to debtors and defaulters’ properties will be reduced to a thin stream until the accounts are settled.” It is essential that residents pay their water and electricity bills, Trollip emphasised, “because, if it does not happen, the municipality does not have the money to supply basic services.” Consumers will also not be able to buy prepaid electricity if they do not settle their municipal accounts. There is, however, a bit of mercy for those who cannot suddenly settle all of their outstand-

Bay residents who do not pay their municipal bills on time will have to manage without power, said Executive Mayor Athol Trollip (middle). Consumers can, however, contact the metro to make special arrangements if they cannot afford to settle their accounts all at once. ing bills: they can contact the municipality to make special arrangements. The Metro blocked almost 3 400 electricity metres last month due to debt, said Retief Odendaal, a mayoral committee member for budget and treasury. “These metres belong to consumers who owe a collective amount of almost R17,2 billion,” said Odendaal. For the past two weeks, the Metro has collected R15,6 million of its debt after notices were sent out to warn defaulters that their power could be cut off. Among these payments, R6 million is from the Department of Health, while the Metro hopes to collect another R5,7 million from the Department of Education. Meanwhile, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has come to a special agreement with the Metro to settle its debt of over R21 million over the next six months. A payment of R6 million was made in August, with another R6 million expected to be paid this month. “We are getting strict with residents and the government regarding their debt. Hopefully we will see the positive results within a month or two.” . Consumers who want to make special arrangements with the municipality to avoid their electricity supply being cut off can contact the call centre on weekdays at 041 506 5555 or customercare@mandelametro.gov.za.

Baakens Food Truck Friday hits the streets REPORTER LOCALS will get to experience the very best in street food culture when the first-ever Baakens Food Truck Friday hits the streets of Port Elizabeth on November 18.
Write to: Bible Basics PO Box 5728 Walmer, Port Elizabeth 6065 Website: http://www.hopeinpe.com/ Also on offer: • FREE correspondence courses in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans; • And leaflets on important topics such as: The Sabbath; Suffering; Heaven and Hell; Life after death; Trinity; Devil; The holy spirit.
This community-driven event will see a dozen food trucks, tuk-tuks and trailers showcase their unique offerings in the heart of Port Elizabeth, the Baakens Valley. From artisanal pizzas, to gourmet burgers, vegetarian meals and Asian cuisine, patrons are in for a taste sensation. Organisers Jan du Plessis of design and building collaborative, WERK_, and Grant Foong of Foong’s Asian Street Food have collaborated with various parties to create an event, which they believe will be good for PE and will give the growing street food industry a much needed boost. According to Foong, the event hopes to gain momentum in the city and to become a monthly event on the calendar. “This event has no entry fee as it is held on public open space. All meals will be capped at R45, keeping it real so to say, and with a definite focus
on a family environment.” Security and cleanliness of the event is a high priority, with the focus on a clean, green mentality for both vendors and patrons. Entertainment is varied and caters for the entire family. Live artists and DJs will be performing throughout the event which runs from 4-9pm, or later. Kiddies activities will also be provided. Families are encouraged to bring their own picnic blankets or camping chairs. A limited indoor facility is available in the WERK_ warehouse in case of inclement weather and toilet facilities are also available inside. Bar facilities will be available from Fratelli Foods and from the Richmond Hill Brewing Company situated off Alabaster Road, Baakens Valley. “Come and support your favourite mobile foodies in arguably the nicest but most underutilised public open spaces in PE,” Foong concludes. For more information find Baakens Food Truck Friday on Facebook, call Grant Foong on 082 367 1864 or email grant@foongs.co.za.

ST AUGUSTINE’S Cathedral is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year and, as part of the celebrations, Gail Taverner will be presenting a Floral Art Display in the Cathedral on November 12.

Floral art is an art form based on the basic principles of design using flowers and plant material such as berries, branches, pods and many other gifts of creation. Taverner has been involved in this art form for over 30 years. “My inspiration comes from being out in nature, perhaps noticing a beautiful naked branch silhouetted against the bright blue skies of winter, the golden berries this time of the year or the palm spathe that has grown in the neighbour’s garden refuse, said Taverner. Nickelodeon’s Genius finalists announced REPORTER
THE Eastern Cape’s smartest kids went headto-head in the regional heats of Nickelodeon’s Genius Quiz Show. After a gruelling two days of maths quizzes, science experiments and problem-solving tasks, teams from Grey High School and DF Malherbe in Port Elizabeth made it through to the next leg of the TV quiz show. Heading onto the next phase of Nickelodeon’s Genius are Ethan John, James Smith and Christian Davidson from Grey Primary School and Brad Spies, Gareth Pienaar and Daniella Recchia from DF Malherbe High School. Each team has won a R50 000 ABSA MegaU bank account as well as a donation from Cambridge Publishing of R10 000 worth of books for their schools. The two qualifying teams from the Eastern Cape next appear in the Nickelodeon Genius TV game show, where they will square up against teams from all over South Africa. A total of 36 kids aged between 11 and 16 from schools throughout the region gathered at the Nelson Mandela Science Centre in Uitenhage on October 27 and 28 to take part in the Genius workshop and quiz knockout, de-
signed to test their maths and science knowhow to the limit as part of the joint initiative between Nickelodeon and ABSA. “All the kids in EC showed resilience and spirit. The competition was very tight, but our two finalists really knew their stuff and 100 percent deserved to get through. “Although only two teams could be selected, every child who took part should be extremely proud of themselves. We are superstoked for the winning teams and cannot wait to see them take part in the finals,” said Tasania Parsadh, Channel Director for Nickelodeon, Africa. Nickelodeon’s Genius is powered by ABSA MegaU and supported by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The winners of the competition will receive an amazing prize: a R100 000 ABSA MegaU account for each member of the winning team and an unforgettable visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA, where the winners will eat lunch with an astronaut and a trip to Universal Studios. The winning schools will receive books and educational material worth R30 000, courtesy of Cambridge Publishing. For more information on the Genius quiz show, log on to www.nickelodeonafrica.com.

My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO
SA’s shining sports weekend WELL now...yes, it could have been a little better, i.e. perfect. But a 90% pass mark is not to be sneezed at. What does this have to do with sport? Quite a lot, actually – and a chunk of it took place as the dreaded deadline of sports journalism crept ever closer. But the great game of cricket took its time – something like the long ago so-called “Timeless Test” between South Africa and England when the game had to be abandoned because of a little trouble the Allies were having with a nasty fellow called Adolf Hitler and the imminent outbreak of the Second World War. This time it might have been the perfect week-
end for Pat Lambie had he had his kicking boots on at the London Wembley Stadium against the Barbarians, instead of missing two conversions, either of which would have given the Boks victory. But in an otherwise faultless performance as Springbok captain and fly half it was not to be. But at least the Boks’ efforts earned them a well-deserved draw. At the break it was 12 apiece. Then the South Africans, playing uncertainly, looked as though they might be headed for defeat in this first match of their European tour as the Baa-baas scored undoubtedly the try of the match by Luke Morahan after some fine
running from the invitation side from a loose ball near their own try-line. With the Baa-baas cracking on the pace it seemed the Boks were headed for defeat with Luke Morhan crossing for a second try and a 24-19 lead with just 20 minutes remaining. But just as all seemed lost the Boks came back in thrilling fashion with a try on fulltime by Rohan Janse van Rensburg. The crucial conversion faded to the right of the poles as the final whistle blew with the teams locked at a 31-31 draw. Meanwhile at the Waca cricket ground in Perth, the Proteas, reviving from a modest 242 (Quinton de Kock 84 and Temba Bavuma 51) hit back strongly with the best batting of this first international against Australia. Dean Elgar (127) and JP Duminy (141), ably packed up by De Kock (64) and Vincent Philander (73), were the stars of a forceful second innings. But Australians on the cricket field always
show plenty of fight and with Usman Khawaja nearing the century mark it seemed there was still much work to be done by the Proteas. But just two runs short of it he became the match’s most spectacular dismissal as the tiny fellow, Temba Bavuma, first stopped a stinging shot close in at silly off and then in one incredible twist of his body threw down the stumps to dismiss literally by inches the desperately sprinting Australian batsman. Thereafter, the writing was on the wall for the Australians, who in all had needed 539 to win; thus losing the test by a handsome margin. The second test between the two teams starts on Saturday. Here’s a thought for both our rugby and cricket teams. It comes from Norman Vincent Peale a US clergyman (1898-1993), “Learn to relax. Your body houses mind and spirit. Inner peace brings with it a relaxed body.”

REPORTER HONDA Motors Southern Africa has added a third, all-new model to its highly regarded range of sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The BR-V joins the long-established CR-V and the highly popular HR-V which was introduced in South Africa last year. While instantly recognisable as a member of the Honda family, the new BR-V features bold, distinctive styling and a sporty, agile appearance which is linked to the raised stance and rugged appeal expected of an SUV. Front and rear bumper garnishes, roof rails and 16-inch wheels are key visual elements, while the striking front grille, with its bold chrome-embellished crossbar, prominent Honda logo and streamlined headlights, endows the BR-V with a distinctive personality that is unmistakably Honda. Inside, the cabin’s roomy dimensions allow the introduction of a third seating row, boosting the BR-V’s occupant seating capacity to seven. Access to all seating positions is easy and convenient, thanks to split seat
rows that can be tumbled forward at the pull of a lever. The fold and tumble convenience of the middle and rear seating rows also provides exceptional versatility, allowing BR-V owners to configure the vehicle in different ways, depending on the seating capacity and luggage space required. The interior is comprehensively equipped and utilises premium materials and finishes for a smart, upmarket ambience. Even the entry-level Trend derivative offers air conditioning, front and rear electric windows and remote keyless entry. A four-speaker audio system with USB connectivity is also standard and mobile phones can be linked to the system via Bluetooth. Active and passive safety is also addressed via ABS anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags and inertia reel seat belts for all but the second-row centre seating position. All derivatives of the new Honda BR-V are powered by the same, efficient 1,5-litre fourcylinder engine. The SOHC unit uses Honda’s i-VTEC variable valve technology to produce 88 kW of maximum power at 6 600r/min,
together with a torque peak of 145Nm at 4 600r/min. BR-V buyers get to choose between a sixspeed manual gearbox and Honda’s refined Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). In the case of the latter, paddle shifts are provided for manual shifting between the CVT’s virtual ratios. The new BR-V is available in four colours: White Orchid, Urban Titanium, Alabaster Silver and Carnelian Red. The model lineup and pricing is as fol lows: Honda Honda Honda Honda Honda

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Brazil readies for drama THERE is something about the Brazilian Grand Prix that brings out the very best that Formula 1 has to offer. For years the South American circuit has delivered some of the most memorable races and visuals in the sports history. The Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace has immortalised itself by crowning five world champions in the 21st Century, so far. In 2005 and 2006 Fernando Alonso wrapped both of his titles here and in 2007 Kimi Raikkonen won the championship by one point over then rookie Lewis Hamilton. In 2008 one of the most dramatic endings to any championship season culminated in Hamilton’s first title. The unlikely story of Brawn resulted in Jenson Button’s title at the end of the 2009 season. The last champion here was crowned in 2012 as Sebastian Vettel swept to his third driver’s crown. In 2016 the opportunity for another champion to be crowned has once again come to the fore. Nico Rosberg currently leads his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by nineteen points with a maximum of fifty still on the table. For Rosberg the equation is clear – win the race and he will become the world champion. It sounds like a simple enough task but there is of course one rather large obstacle in his way – Lewis Hamilton. Granted, Hamilton doesn’t have the greatest of records in Brazil but he must throw caution to the wind in order to stop Rosberg. This weekend there is no percentage game to be played, no damage limitation. It is the type of situation where a true champion thrives and one that, arguably, all F1 fans relish. The Autodromo is one of the shortest circuits on the calendar but still provides a specific challenge to drivers. “The track is quite a technical layout, especially sector 2. It’s important to get this right for a quick
lap. Like many of the circuits we race at, it has had a lot of history and great moments over the years. This makes it one of the ‘special’ ones on the calendar,” said Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. Red Bull could be in with a good chance this weekend as despite the long start/finish strait the layout should suit their car. Sebastian Vettel is likely to lay off the radio commentary this weekend after his rather colourful Mexican Grand Prix. The German driver apologised to all parties involved and will most likely opt to do his talking on track where Ferrari should be able to deliver a turn of pace which could make proceedings quite interesting. The track surface is quite an abrasive one for which Pirelli have brought the hard, medium, and soft compound. This doesn’t provide any profound insight as to what will happen in the race though. In truth, over the years the Brazilian Grand Prix has been one of the most unpredictable races of the year with a tendency to err towards the dramatic. Naturally, the expectation is that Mercedes is the favourite going into the weekend but at this history-laden South American circuit nothing is a given. It’s already primed to be a weekend of high stakes but it’s likely to be an emotional one too. Brazilian driver Felipe Massa will contest his final home race ahead of his retirement from the sport. The image of Massa winning this Grand Prix amid the euphoria of the crowd is a special memory. What’s more, few will ever forget the gracious manner in which Massa conducted himself as he fell agonisingly short of winning the 2008 title. While his star may have waned slightly over the last few seasons, we will never forget Felipe Massa’s prodigious quali speed, his glorious wins in Brazil, and the grace he showed in 2008. Obrigado Felipe.

Basson swimming twins target Worlds AFTER a successful African Championships in Bloemfontein last month, NMMU’s Madibaz swimming twins Alard and Alaric Basson now have their sights set on the World Short Course Championships which will take place in Canada from December 6 to 11. The 20-year-olds from Uitenhage in Nelson Mandela Bay returned from the continental meeting with a bunch of medals and will be looking to put that experience to good use in December. Alaric, a breaststroke specialist, returned from the African champs with a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 200m event, as well as gold in both the 4x100 mixed and men’s medley relays. Although spending many hours in the water under the tutelage of Coach Mark Edge, Alaric said they always kept their focus on the bigger picture. “All the training can be quite tough, but then you have to look at what your goals are,” he said. “At the moment it is the Worlds but, ultimately, I’m aiming for the 2020 Olympics and my mindset is always on that prize. “To have a chance of achieving something
like that, you have to make a lot of sacrifices and you can’t just say you don’t feel like training.” The second-year student-athletes, who are both studying building engineering at NMMU, said they started swimming at an early age. “Our dad saw us in the pool at home and felt we had some talent so he signed us up for the local Dolphin Club,” said Alaric. “From there we eventually linked up with Mark and have been with him for 11 years.” Like his brother, Alard said he was happy with his results at the African champs, where he took gold in two relays and bronze medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly events. “Considering we were at an altitude which we are not used to, I was pretty pleased the way it turned out.” With Tokyo 2020 in the back of his mind, Alard said he was focused on putting in an extra effort to improve his chances. “You always have to go the extra mile and push yourself to the limit,” he said. “I always think of the other guys who are also training, so you have to push yourself even harder to have the edge.” He said he had been inspired by South African star swimmer Chad le Clos and had learnt much from him.
THE Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa takes place on Sunday, January 29, 2017 and the PE Express is giving away a free entry into the race, valued at R3 250. The deadline for registration is on November 11. How to enter: Simply send an email with a very short motivation on why you would like to win.
