Frans finally becomes helicopter pilot at 59 It took 15 years of hard work and dedication, but Frans Gerber of Port Elizabeth finally became a helicopter pilot and also the oldest flight school student in the country to obtain his commercial helicopter licence. Gerber had been dreaming of becoming a pilot since he was a young boy in the 1960s. He finally began with fixed wing flying lessons in 1999. Gerber now dreams of becoming a flight instructor in the near future. His pug, Milo, accompanies him every where, and loves being his “copilot” on every helicopter ride. PHOTO: WERNER HILLS
Special Rates Area for Central? ROSLYN BAATJIES
C
ENTRAL could become Nelson Mandela Bay metro’s second special levies area (SRA) after overwhelming support from residents.
Richmond Hill is the first local SRA. An SRA is a geographic area within the jurisdiction of a Municipality, determined or to be determined by the Municipality Council in terms of Section 22 of the Municipal Rates Act 6 of 2004 as an area within which an additional rates
amount shall be levied by the Municipality and paid over to a community-owned company for its sole use in improving aspects of service delivery within that geographic area. The designated area for the Central SRA consists of 4,131 properties that are all part of Ward 5 in the metro. Sandile Rwexwana, ward councillor, welcomed the proposed SRA. “As a resident of Richmond Hill, I saw the benefits of an SRA. I support the establishment of the Central SRA and welcome the benefits for property owners and tenants in this vibrant and
historical area of Port Elizabeth.” Rwexwana said the SRA is not politically motivated and empowers residents to decide on improvements or additional services in their area. Also Athol Trollip, Executive Mayor, has pledged his support to the SRA establishment. “The Richmond Hill SRA is a huge success and has disposed of serious crime and filth. The renewal of this city has led to improved hygiene, huge increase in property value and the establishment of a popular restaurant area. “For only a small increase in rates, the residents of Richmond Hill tremendously benefi-
ted,” said Trollip. According to Kenrick Brown, interim SRA committee, the lessons to be learned from the establishment of the Richmond Hill SRA are to the benefit of the Central SRA. “This, together with an independent budget, will allow for a proactive and aggressive approach to improving safety, cleanliness and maintenance in the central region,” said Brown. *A public meeting will be held tomorrow (Thursday, December 1) at the MBDA office in the Old Tramways building at 5:30pm. Polisie waarsku ná 2de kaping in twee dae in PE ROSLYN BAATJIES DIE polisie het ’n waarskuwing aan motorbestuurders gerig om altyd op hul hoede te wees ná ’n tweede kaping in twee dae in Port Elizabeth.
Kapt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, polisiewoord voerder.
Kapt. Dié kaping het plaasgevind ’n dag nadat ’n Gautengse sakeman (73) Donderdag by ’n gastehuis in Skegnessweg, Somerstrand, gekaap is.
Mettler is metro’s new manager ROSLYN BAATJIES THE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Council last Thursday made a U-turn on his appointed municipal manager. A Council resolution in October to appoint Vuyo Mlokoti in the post, was recalled after finding he had withheld information about his work history. The Council then approved a proposal that the acting city manager, Johann Mettler, is appointed to the position. Athol Trollip executive mayor, announced on October 27 that Mlokoti was the municipality’s choice as city manager. He said thereafter they found evidence of him withholding information about the early termination of his contract with his previous employer the South African State Information Technology Agency (Sita). The decision to appoint Mlokoti was then revoked by the council. Mettler is very excited about the opportunity “I would very much like to be part of a winning city and look forward to good and better days for the Bay,” he added. Mettler entered his post as city manager on December 1, 2015 after being deployed by

REPORTER THIS summer the newly launched Tourism Blue Flag project will see the deployment of 200 beach stewards at Blue Flag sites around the country, with the aim of improving the experience of both local visitors and domestic and international tourists at our beaches. The Tourism Blue Flag project will benefit fifty beaches along the South African coastline by providing improved tourism facilities and services, while the beach stewards themselves will receive accredited training in environmental education with the ultimate goal of developing them for further employment in the coastal tourism sector. Some of the beaches that will be
affected include Hobie Beach, Humewood Beach, Kings Beach, Birah Beach and Hamburg Beach. This exciting new three-year coastal tourism and youth development project is being implemented by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) in partnership with the National Department of Tourism. The beach stewards are being hosted by local coastal municipalities and will be easily recognisable to beach goers in their project branded apparel. They have completed their induction training and are looking forward to interacting with visitors on Port Elizabeth Blue Flag beaches over the coming months. Activities one can expect to see rolling out at participating Blue Flag beaches include:

Comair sponsors schools’ trees to mark 70 years aloft REPORTER IN celebration of 70 years of uninterrupted, profitable operation, Comair Limited has sponsored 70 trees in conjunction with Food and Trees for Africa. The trees will be planted at schools in Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal and provide much-needed food and shade in disadvantaged communities. One such planting event took place at Settlers Park Primary School in Port Elizabeth. Susan van der Ryst, Corporate Communications Manager of Comair, said, “It’s important for business to play a responsible role in social development. “So while we’re very proud of nearly three quarters of a century of operation, this is an opportunity to highlight the need for corporate social investment. The schools at which the trees will be planted will benefit from much-needed shading and nutritional needs, as well as enhancing the aesthetic appeal of their properties.
“We chose to partner with Food and Trees for Africa as it greens, educates, offsets carbon emissions and transforms schools and other community centres into healthier, more sustainable environments.” Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) Trees and Carbon Programme Manager, Emily Jones, said, “Comair has been a long-term supporter of FTFA’s Tree planting initiatives. It’s very encouraging to see business involved in an initiative that directly benefits underresourced communities and schools in such a profound way.” Jones added that all the schools will receive a training morning where they will be taught to plant trees for maximum survival rate and care for the trees in these water scarce conditions. “Trees have many benefits apart from carbon sequestration. Trees help to clean water, they reduce erosion and noise and they provide fruit, nuts and medicine. Very importantly, they provide habitats for wildlife and contribute to civic and school pride,”noted Jones.

Sunslide heading to JBay REPORTER FROLICKING in the sun has never been this much fun - and safe - as a first of its kind sunslide is heading to Jeffreys Bay this December for one day only. The unique Nivea Sunslide will make its way to Dolphin Beach on December 13. The giant 4.5 metre high slide uses innovative technology that allows children to get complete sun protection coverage, while sliding down the big blue slide. The Nivea Sunslide sprays waterproof sunscreen onto kids and can cover approximately 100 children in an hour. Hundreds of fine spray jet outlets fitted at the top of the slide, spray down a light film of waterproof Nivea Sun Kids Swim & Play Protec-
tion Sun Lotion SPF 50+ onto the kids as they enter the arch, covering them from head to toe in sunscreen. Even those hardto-reach places like behind the ears, between the toes and on the scalp are sorted. Each child will be given a pair of goggles before sliding down to make sure his or her eyes are completely covered. J ust one slide is all it takes for complete sun protection, so parents can relax with total peace of mind that they aren’t compromising on care while their kids have fun. “The ingenious concept was developed from the insight that kids love to spend time in the sun, but hate applying sunscreen as they feel it disrupts their fun,” says Shayna Amaidas, Nivea Sun Care Brand Manager.
The new Nivea Sunslide promises to be a blast.PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Local opera singer welcomed back ODETTE PARFITT HIS life has been a whirlwind since he traded the streets of Zwide for the American stage in 2013, but being back in the Bay has given Musa Ngqungwana (32) a chance to breathe. Ngqungwana, who has performed to great acclaim as an opera singer in America, received a hero’s welcome when he arrived in Port Elizabeth last Wednesday. The PE Viola Men’s Chorus from Zwide, which counted a teenage Ngqungwana among its members, welcomed him with spirit and song at the airport, and even convinced him to sing with them. “Performing with them again after years feels like unearthing my roots,” said an exuberant Ngqungwana. “I joined the choir when I was 16 years old, and they shaped the foundation of my musical training.” It is also thanks to the choral conductor, Snaza Ntshebe, that Ngqungwana’s dream of being an opera star was born. “He showed me a video of a black man performing Mozart. I had no idea black men could perform classical music, but when I saw it, I was absolutely captivated.” In 2004 he auditioned for an ensemble for a production by Mimi Coertse. “She encouraged me to move to Cape Town and hone my talent, and that changed my life.” After his studies, Ngqungwana moved to America and joined the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia for four years. “I have not had a breather since then, moving from production to production. Centrestage salutes Johnny Cash at Old Grey REPORTER JOHNNY Cash fans are in for a treat as Centrestage brings its tribute to the popular rockabilly, country, blues, folk and rock n roll icon in their show
“Walk the Line” to Old Grey for one night only on Friday, December, 2. Two sides of the enigmatic, rebellious legend are presented in the show by long-time Cash fans Hugo Kleinhans and Lionel Hunt.
In front, from left, are Lionel Hunt, Andrew Warneke and Hugo Kleinhans. At the back are Megan Du Toit and Devon Van Rooyen. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Vocalist and keyboard player Megan Du Toit features as Cash’s second wife, long-time love interest and ofttimes singing partner June Carter. The double bass also features as Andrew Warneke gets to play the upright fretless instrument which was so central to the late nineteen fifties Tennessee Three rockabilly sound. The lineup is completed by Devon Van Rooyen on drums. The show takes in some 38 classic Cash songs, including hits played in his famous free prison concerts such as Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Get Rhythm, Boy Named Sue, I Got Stripes, San Quentin and Folsom Prison Blues. A fifties rockabilly salute depicting the popular sound of the time during Cash’s early tour days is also likely to prove extremely popular. Lionel Hunt, well known nationally as a top-notch Elvis impersonator, comes in from his home in Port Alfred for the performance. “Walk the Line” promises to both replicate and reinterpret the Johnny Cash songbook which is still particularly loved by audiences everywhere. Tickets for the Old Grey performances, which start at 7:30pm, can be purchased through Computicket at R150 or R130 for 8 or more.

Bay artist accepted into British Guild of Motoring Artists REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay automotive artist and illustrator, Clive Botha, has been accepted into the ranks of the British Guild of Motoring Artists. The Guild of Motoring Artists (GMA) is a prestigious worldwide group of artists, designers and engineers who share a common interest in automotive art and whose work shows a strong commitment to motoring subjects. Founded in 1986, the GMA has attracted some of the best automotive artists through its worldwide membership, including members from North and South America, Australasia and across Europe. In order to maintain a high standard, admission to the Guild is subject to a rigorous selection process. “I have been drawing since I was a small child and growing up in the ‘Mo-
tor City’ fuelled my passion for cars and the automotive industry,” said Botha. “In 2016, I applied for membership to the GMA and was accepted as a Full Member. This is a great honour and I am proud to represent my city and country on this distinguished platform.” Botha graduated with a National Diploma in Graphic Design from the former Port Elizabeth Technikon (now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University). He has over 10 years’ experience, managing his own digital marketing agency, MotorMedia Communications, where he primarily focuses on automotive related industries. Over the years, he has done work for large corporate brands and small to medium-sized businesses, as well as individual clients - locally, nationally and internationally. Botha explained, “Although I deliver a range of marketing and design
services to the automotive sector, drawing and illustration is, and always will be, my first love! For this reason, I created a division within my agency called ‘The Cartist’ that specifically focuses on automotive art and illustration. “I mainly work in graphite, coloured pencil and graphic marker; however, I do not focus on one particular style or medium. I often incorporate pen, pastel and gouache into some of my artwork which ranges from quick sketches to highly finished renderings. I would describe myself as a perfectionist and I am extremely detail-oriented, but at the same time I also enjoy being a bit more expressive in my artwork. In the near future I also plan to expand and develop my skill set to include digital art as an additional medium for my work.” For more info, visit www.motormedia.co.za.

Müller, who works for SARS, has become somewhat of a community legend around Christmas time when he picks a theme and makes a Christmas tree by hand from scratch. This year’s tree is called the “Snow Queen” and it was designed to fit in with the more traditional theme Arthur has chosen. For the last ten years or so, Arthur has donated the proceeds of the event to a different charity every year and this year’s chosen charity is Hannah’s Arms. Hannah’s Arms is a charity that takes in abandoned or hurt babies from the ages 0 to 3 years and provides one-on-one care for them until they find them a home. They also provide education and access to resources for women who face crisis pregnancies. The fantastic event will include hundreds of fairy lights and children will be given the opportunity to write a Letter to Santa and throw it in Santa’s mailbox. Arthur’s Christmas Wonderland will take place on December 3 and 10 at 4 Framesby Villas in Heilbron Street, Framesby. Entry into the magical land will cost R20 per person. In honour of this year’s chosen charity, a request has been made to bring along baby food, diapers or anything else that could possibly aid Hannah’s Arms. For more info, contact Arthur on 082 565 4216.

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life,
My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
We test drive Volkswagen’s new Tiguan BETTIE GILIOMEE VOLKSWAGEN’s new Tiguan was recently announced as one of the 10 finalists in the prestige South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ)’s WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition. Express on Wheels spent a week test driving the new Tiguan on the mom’s taxi (urban) commute. The new Tiguan will initially only be available in 1.4 litre guise in SA. This is in line with people moving away from the traditional bulky, fuel-thirsty 4x4s of the past, to sporty, multipurpose family and cargo carriers which look like an SUV and offer the practicality and convenience of an SUV, but are used 90% of the time by mom or dad in town – so it needs to be fuel efficient and drive like a car. And those are the boxes that the Tiguan ticks. The test vehicle, the mid-range Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSi Comfortline (which retails at R419 000), was fitted with quite a number of optional extras such as a panoramic sunroof, electrically released towbar, auto actuated boot lid, active info display, adaptive cruise control, Vienna leather seats, R-line exterior package, LED headlights and 6.5-inch CD/Radio composition media, to name a few. At present only 1.4 TSI engines with 92kW and 110kW are available in SA. The 92kW is available with 6-speed manual transmission and the 110kW is mated with a 6-speed DSG transmission. The 2.0 TDI engines with power output of 81kW, 105kW and 130kW will be introduced in the last quarter of 2016, together with 2.0 TSI with 162kW. These high powered engines will be fitted with the 4MOTION drive system. The Tiguan is available in three equipment levels: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Exterior VW says that their design team applied a simple ethos: less is more. And in my opinion, the exterior look is one of the most impressive features of the new Tiguan. It’s not over the top; it will not date quickly; yet it stands out and definitely makes heads turn. It has squarish lines but curves in all the right places. The test vehicle was fitted with the R-Line package which added some more accents to make it stand out even more. Interior While the concept of less is more is definitely pulled through to the interior design, there are some quite impressive elements that make
travelling in the Tiguan a fun event for the whole family. The back seat passengers cannot be blamed for thinking they are in an aeroplane seat. They not only have access to trays – that fold down from the back of the front seats, but also their own air-conditioners which they can set according to their preferences, a centre armrest with cupholders, magazine pockets and reading lights. Talking about lights, when you climb into the Tiguan at night, you will be pleasantly surprised by the ambient light which runs, like the running lights in an aeroplane, along the top and bottom of the side panels. The boot is nicely spacious with storage spaces for smaller items. The adjustable 40:20:40 split bench rear seat can slide forwards or backwards by up to 18 cms, thereby giving one the choice of either more legroom or boot space. An optional extra, which the test model was fitted with, was an auto-actuated bootlid, meaning the boot opens and closes automatically when you press a button. There is also a button right next to the electrically adjustable driver’s seat, to open the boot without leaving your seat (quite handy for the school run) as Mom doesn’t have to get out to open a heavy boot lid or help the kids to close it again. As far as “toys” for the driver are concerned, the most eye-catching is the digital display for the speed and odometer right in front of the driver. A beautiful graphic of the car pops up when switching on the car. The digital display can be adapted to rather show the satellite navigation with smaller displays of the speed- and odometer. The Tiguan has a voiceferous park assist – which even dims the music substantially to make sure it is being heard when needed. It is also very quick to complain (or alert you) when you are driving too fast behind a car that is stopping in front of you. The Tiguan also has an electronic handbrake and auto lights which switches on when the circumstances require it. The new Tiguan offers the latest generation of infotainment systems, based on the brand’s Modular Infotainment Platform (MIB). The 6.5 inch touchscreen of the test vehicle reminds one of working with a cellphone – with lots of swipe action to make your choice on the menu – and very easy to operate. Ride The ride feels very much like that of other VW models – just with a higher seating position. That could be since the Tiguan is the first Volkswagen SUV to be built on the MQB, or

Modularer Querbaukasten (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform. This means it benefits from the latest available technology and shares much of its underpinnings with other new models such as the award-winning Golf and Passat. For a 1.4 engine, which delivers 98kW, to propel quite a big vehicle, the Tiguan is surprisingly not as sluggish as one would expect. It responds quickly to acceleration, and offers a smooth ride. It idles very quietly – in fact – so quietly that while waiting at traffic lights I often wondered if the engine was still running or not. I enjoyed the smooth ride, precise handling and unflustered way it dealt with the urban obstacles of not only speedhumps and traffic circles, but also the uneven patches along my route due to the many roadworks going on in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro at the moment. During my time with it on the urban commute, the trip computer showed an average fuel consumption of 11 litres per 100km. The trip computer also indicated that the fuel consumption over an extended period is 8.8 litres/100km, while VW states it as 6.1 litres /100km for the combined cycle. The test model was fitted with a 6-speed gearbox – and though it’s smooth and easy to change, I would have preferred an automatic version. Standard and Safety features The new Tiguan received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP which was aggregated from
the new Tiguan’s results in four sub-sections: occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and driver assistance systems. It offers driver and front passenger airbags, an airbag curtain system and front seat side impact airbags. Hazard lights flash automatically under hard braking, while Electronic Stability Control, XDS transverse differential lock and fatigue detection (Rest Assist) are all standard. Manual air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, cruise control, front fog lights, leather multi-function steering wheel, connectivity package (Bluetooth and USB interface) and roof rails are among the many standard-fit features on all models in the range. All TSI engines feature BlueMotion Technology. As such they include Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems to enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions. It comes standard with a 5-year/90 000km Service Plan, 3-year/120 000km warranty and a 12year anti-corrosion warranty. Service Interval is 15 000km.
EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
We test drive the Mazda BT-50 double cab SOME of the most difficult vehicles for me to test drive and write about are bakkies – in any shape or form. I find them, especially the big double cabs, a huge nuisance on the school run or in parking areas. And one just has to go and look at any school run or shopping centre and see how many double cabs are parked there and have become the family vehicle. Every now and again, I find myself – being a motoring columnist – behind the wheel of a double cab and becoming that nuisance. The test vehicle was the Mazda BT-50 2.2L 4x2 Double Cab with 6-speed manual transmission. The vehicle was taken on the mom’s taxi route, as well as a daytrip to Port Alfred. And the terrible state of the roads in this town, is certainly a good enough excuse to own a bakkie in town. The Mazda BT-50 double cabs are available in 2.2 litre and 3.2 litre engines. The 2.2 litre is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission and in 4x2, while the 3.2 litre versions are available with manual or automatic gearboxes and in 4x2 and 4x4 guise. In a bakkie, used mainly on the mom’s taxi route, I would have preferred an automatic transmission to the manual one test driven. I find the first gear always a bit problematic and its almost easier to pull away in second gear than in first.

PHOTO: SUPPLIED
I have test driven many of the double cabs on the market, and I can say that as far as comfort and equipment levels go, the Mazda should be a bigger competitor in this market segment than it currently is. The interior of the BT 50 does offer a lot of the comfort features of a car and is quite spacious and comfortable in addition to looking stylish with nice silver accents – yes – who would have thought the word stylish and bakkie would be used in one sentence. All the models come with power windows and mirrors, air-conditioning and cruise control.
Sat nav is also standard in some of the models. A trip computer is another handy feature. There are also switches on the steering wheel for the audio system and the Bluetooth functions. The passengers in the back also benefit from an armrest with cupholders and lots of legroom. As far as its bakkie quality goes, it has a big loadbed with the ability to haul over 1,400kg or tow 3,500kg. Ride and safety The new generation turbo diesel engine uses
advanced common-rail direct injection resulting in more power with less fuel consumption. Hill Descent Control (HDC) automatically applies brakes to maintain a steady, low speed down steep slopes. Hill Launch Assist (HLA) keeps the brakes applied for about two seconds when you remove your foot from the brake pedal to apply throttle. Other safety features include ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which optimises braking force according to vehicle load. Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) monitors pedal application to recognise emergency braking, adding stopping power right when it’s needed. The Mazda BT-50’s handling is responsive, and apart from the gearbox – which felt typically like that of a bakkie – it does have a car-like feel when driving it. You only know you are in a bakkie again when you try to look for a parking space. Its handling and steering is responsive and despite being on the open road without a big load to bulk it down, the ride was solid and not as floaty as one would expect.
Price:
Prices for the BT-50 Double Cab models range from R409 900 to R516 200.

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO
Even Doc Craven would’ve blanched
YOU have to wonder what the “Doc” would have had to say about the Springboks’ 27-13 defeat by Wales in Cardiff last weekend. Who’s this “Doc” fellow? The late Daniel H Craven, that’s who. Rugby writers always went to him for his take on a Test match – particularly if his beloved Boks were on the losing end. Indeed he would no doubt have been just a little grumpy, particularly in a case like this: the Boks’ lack of success in the dismal European tour, with one draw. Your question would definitely have elicited at the very least a sigh and a shrug of the shoulders. Then something like: “Well, if you’ve got no plan what do you expect?” Although there was the consolation of a 31-31 draw against the Barbarians, everything began to fall apart. You no doubt don’t
need reminding; but for the record the results of the four-match European tour, excluding the Baa-baas, ended in the following sad fashion: lost to England 37-21, lost to Italy 20-18, lost to Wales 27-13. Last weekend, starting with Elton Jantjies at halfback, it looked in only the seventh minute, like it might be the Boks’ big day. But that was wishful thinking. Put another way – the 3-0 score-line was the first and last time the Boks led. It was also the start of a steady decline that would grow in the South African team’s inability to put on any kind of brake as Wales, piling on the pressure went 20-6 ahead (Ken Owen try). Then, even though the Boks had shortened the lead to 20-13 through a five-pointer by flanker Nizam Carr, the home side, put-
ting on increased pressure, scored again through the ever-busy Justin Tipuric, who would by the final whistle be named Man of the Match. Would the Boks be able to fight back? Any hope of the game going in that direction began rapidly to fade as Wales turned on the pressure while the visitors seemed at wits’ end with no real plan – the South African efforts now largely going nowhere, except sideways, making it easy for the Welshmen to cut them down with determined defence. It was this that prompted the former Springbok No 8 and national coach, Nick Mallett, to remark at halftime that while the Boks seemed still to be in with a chance, things weren’t going well for the South Africans. “They are going to need all the luck they can get. As soon as the tide turns
against them, their heads drop.” How right his prediction turned out to be. Coach Allister Coetzee tried to put a positive spin on the Boks’ display. “There were several aspects of their play that were spot on,” he said. However, if it hasn’t happened already, the dropping of the dapper former scrumhalf as the Boks’ coach must surely be around the corner. It wasn’t a good week for South African sport as a whole. The Proteas, although taking the cricket series against Australia 2-1 in Adelaide at the weekend, had to bow to the home side’s superior performance, losing the final Test of the series by seven wickets. However, South Africa’s pace bowler, Vernon Philander, for his all-round performance deservedly picked up the Man of the Series Award.
TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Rosberg holds his nerve to win title SINCE that first weekend of the F1 season, back in mid-March, there has been a menacing steeliness about Nico Rosberg that seemed unbreakable. This steeliness, along with astonishing form, has, after eleven seasons and 206 Grand Prix races, made Nico Rosberg the 2016 Formula 1 World Champion. The season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix delivered a tension-filled race from beginning to end. Lewis Hamilton, starting on pole, needed to win the race with Rosberg in fourth to take the title. Unfortunately for Hamilton, Rosberg stayed in a close second for the majority of the race and – as would be expected – Hamilton tried all he could to win the championship. In fact, Hamilton attempted to back his teammate into the clutches of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen by deliberately slowing his pace. Less than two seconds covered the top four by the chequered flag, but just as in the other twenty races of this season, Rosberg held his nerve and finished second.
Ultimately, Hamilton won the Abu Dhabi GP ahead of Rosberg and a late-charging Vettel. Meanwhile, the two Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Raikkonen brought his Ferrari home in sixth. Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez’s seventh and eighth capped a tremendous season for Force India who finished a superb fourth in the constructor’s championship. In his final F1 race Felipe Massa finished ninth ahead of McLaren’s Fernando Alonso. Jenson Button’s 17-year F1 career, sadly, came to a premature end with the failure of a wishbone on the right-front suspension. There will be those who question whether Nico Rosberg deserves to be the 2016 driver’s champion, but the answer to their question is an easy yes. He has won nine Grand Prix races this season and most vitally, delivered stunning qualifying performances under extreme pressure. His ability to absorb the pressure and not
buckle under it, has been the key to Rosberg’s success in 2016. In 2014, his inability to handle pressure from Hamilton was there for all to see as he buckled first in Russia and then in Italy and Texas while leading. He went away with the aim of coming back stronger, and he did. His heightened mental strength allowed him the ability to focus on one race at a time. While it seems an easy enough concept, the mental strength required to successfully accomplish it, under extreme conditions, cannot be underestimated and must be commended. Some will crow about unreliability, specifically Hamilton’s failure in Malaysia. But unreliability has been a part of the sport for as long as it’s been in existence and it will be going forward. It’s as much a part of a Grand Prix season as changeable weather or safety cars. In context, the “unreliability-argument” only goes so far though. For example, while the headlines after the Malaysian GP screamed of Hamilton’s truly unfortunate
Auto Traders
failure, it didn’t focus much on Rosberg’s drive in the same race. After all Rosberg was dead last after a collision with Sebastian Vettel and recovered brilliantly to ultimately finish third. What’s more, Hamilton’s “finger-trouble” off the start-line in Japan and Italy, and the crash in Baku, that prompted a gearbox penalty, were all his own doing. The simple, but telling, fact is that Hamilton was simply out-performed by Rosberg. Any world championship triumph depends on the consistency of the eventual winner and the proof of Rosberg’s deserved success is in the numbers. Of the 1 268 laps in the 2016 season the German driver has spent 957, or 75%, in the top three. In addition, in all of the 21 races he never qualified outside the top two and only spent thirteen laps outside the top ten in the entire season. While all these numbers reveal an emphatically imposing season, the only number that Nico Rosberg will care about is the 285 points which have made him the 2016 Formula 1 World Champion.

The Sprint Distance triathlon is a 750m swim, 20km Cycle and a 5km Run with entry open to individuals or teams (of 2 or 3 people). Online registration is on the all new Zsports website, www.zsports.co.za, with the first 100 triathletes to register online receiving a branded silicone swim cap. The entry fee is R200 per participant or R300 per team and participants are welcome to select just one or more of the races throughout the Series. First race of the 2016 Series will be the traditional Summies to Schoenies triathlon on Friday, December 16, which features a rare one way triathlon with the swim at Pollok Beach, cycle to Schoenmakerskop and
the run through the scenic Sacramento Trail. The organisers ensure that all race kit is taken from transition in Summerstrand through to the transition area at the finish zone in Schoenies. The Series carries a prize pool of R7 500 for the junior and senior top 3 finishers and is supported by Caltex Eastern Cape, Dynamic Express Services, aQuellé, Zone 3, Black Sheep and Oracle Media. See www.zsports.co.za for details or follow the Series Facebook page (@trisummerseries) to be kept informed of dates, routes and prizes available this season.

2017 XTERRA Trail Run entries now open REPORTER INCORPORATING the trail run routes of South Africa’s premier off-road triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA, the XTERRA Trail Run will kick off at the Buffelspoort Dam in the North Western Province on January 22, 2017, before heading to the Nelson Mandela Bay and then Grabouw. “The XTERRA Trail Run features the best trail run routes on offer in Buffelspoort, Nelson Mandela Bay and Grabouw,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Trail runners not yet ready for the challenge of an off road triathlon, can still experience the electric XTERRA vibe while taking on a third of the XTERRA challenge. Families can look forward to an action packed weekend with likeminded people in picturesque outdoor environments.” 2017 Event dates:
Lawson Brown volleyball going to Steve Tshwete Games Lawson Brown High School’s volleyball team will represent the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan at the Steve Tshwete Games later this year. The team players are, from left, Papama Hawu, Kuhle Ngaye, Sinovuyo Makonza, Sinazo Jela and Inga Ngaye.
(10.2km) in Nelson Mandela Bay in an impressive time of 38 minutes 27 seconds. “Trail running is marvellous; it keeps your muscles healthy and challenges you mentally,” said Gcogco. “When I first started taking part in trail run events I always finished last. Crossing the finish line in first place was a wonderful experience”. The event will take place on February 12, 2017, at Kings Beach. Entry costs R120 for the 6km race and R180 for the 12km.
Grabouw (Western Cape)
South African 10km Road Champion Elroy Gelant was unstoppable in the men’s 12km XTERRA Trail Run Grabouw in February, claiming gold in an impressive time of 46 minutes 14 seconds. “I was in Cape Town for a product launch when I heard about the XTERRA Trail Run. I thought that it would be great cross training for me. The route was really beautiful and a nice change from road running,” said Gelant. The event will take place on February 26, 2017, at the Grabouw Country Club. Entry costs R120 for the 6km race and R180 for the 12km.

Buffelspoort (North West Province)
Adele Broodryk made her XTERRA Trail Run debut in Buffelspoort earlier this year. “My husband took part in his first triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA Lite, so I decided to enter the trail run. I’d recommend this event to other runners because of the amazing atmosphere, beautiful scenery and good organisation,” said Broodryk, who completed the 12km XTERRA Trail Run in an impressive time of 56 minutes 59 seconds. The event will take place on January 22, 2017, at the Buffelspoort Dam. Entry costs R120 for the 6km race and R180 for the 12km.
