Summertime fun!
After a cloudy weekend, the sun came out on Monday for holidaymakers in the Bay who made full use of the opportunity to visit the beach. The SA Weather Service is forecasting a maximum 29 degrees Celsius for today and warm, sunny weather this weekend.

ROADBLOCKS HELD ACCROSS METRO

S
AFER Festive Season operations have started in earnest in the Port Elizabeth metro.
On Friday police, traffic officials and the Department of Home Affairs worked together to ensure that motorists are complying with the rules of the road. Road blocks were held in all policing areas in the Mount Road cluster, as well as foot patrols in the central business district and shopping malls. According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, a total of 781 vehicles were stopped and searched on Friday. Fines to the value of R48 000 were issued. One person was arrested for drunk-
en driving and four people were arrested on drugrelated cases. A total of 539 litres of home brewed liquor was confiscated by police in Walmer. “Traffic on the N2 Freeway will be increasing in the next week and police are advising drivers to adhere to the road traffic regulations and to make sure that their vehicles are safe and road worthy. Police visibility and increased operations will be taking place during this festive season and beyond,” said Col Naidu. The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality’s Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, Councillor John Best, said the metro promises a crime-free Festive Season with zero tolerance of drunken driving during the holidays. “Residents and visitors to the metro can rest assured that we will not tolerate drunken driving
and lawlessness this festive season. We will, instead, make sure that law-breakers would be prosecuted,” said Best. According to Best, the Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has asked that a joint message from the Metro, South African Police Service (SAPS) and other Safety and Security Agencies be issued with regard to the importance of the safety and security of the city and beaches, and to emphasise that lawlessness won’t be tolerated. A Festive Season Safety and Security Plan was launched at Wells Estate last week and promised a tough stance against those motorists who would be found guilty. “The comprehensive multidisciplinary festive season plan involves members of the SAPS, the emergency services and metro police,” said Best. Some of the objectives to reduce crime during
the festive season in Nelson Mandela Bay are to ensure high visibility patrols, deploying law enforcement to identified high-risk areas, deterring people from speeding and joint roadblocks. “Together with SAPS and a broad cross-section of stakeholders, we must show that we are highly capable of protecting the citizens of our metro against those criminal elements bent on ‘capitalizing’ during the hustle and bustle of the festive season. . The police have also appealed to shoppers to be extra vigilant during this period especially when standing at ATM’s. People are urged to make sure that when making a transaction, that you are not distracted by anyone or anything. Should this happen, refrain from continuing with the transaction and immediately cancel the process.

Metro wants to win war on leaks REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality is determined to win its war on leaks, said Councillor Annette Lovemore, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Engineering, at a media briefing at Port Elizabeth City Hall last week.

COMMUNITIES should stand together in the fight against gender-based violence. It is only through forming this type of united front that violence against women and children will be eradicated. This, says a local private security company, is why they worked with the Mount Road police recently to create awareness about the 16 Days of Ac-
tivism campaign. “This issue still remains a massive concern within our communities and we too often hear about such incidents taking place,” said Shawn Swiegelaar, Port Elizabeth Community Development Manager for ADT Security. “It is important that we all work together as a united front to make an impact and create the necessary awareness about respect and care for our women and children. Campaigns such as the annual 16 Days of Activ-
“They are settling in, being orientated and getting to know our Metro and its demands. Within the next week they will be fixing leaks. “In the New Year, we will be advertising to fill more vacancies,” said Lovemore. “We are receiving about 3 000 calls a month at our 24-hour operations centre, dealing with reports of water leaks. We have a backlog, with about 20% of complaints lodged in June still not addressed. We know this is not acceptable, by a long stretch. “Not only have we appointed plumbers – the first seven of many more – but we have filled Superintendent posts, which will allow enhanced management of our tasks. “ We have appointed contractors to help us blitz the backlog and get our leak-fixing turnaround time down to acceptable levels,” said Lovemore. Residents can report water leaks and abuse to the call centre at 0800 20 50 50.
There are also many Nature Trails along the way. The route features some of Port Elizabeth’s most beautiful spots, including the Fynbos Trail at Schoenmakerskop and the Van Stadens Flower Reserve. Adding to the excitement, there will also be the opportunity to see a couple of shipwrecks along the way. The route is listed in the official Visitors’ Guide and on the Nelson Mandela Metro website at www.nmbt.co.za . Ibhayi Sunshine Saunter maps are available at all tourism offices, hotels, BnBs etc. and tours for local and overseas visitors can be arranged. – REPORTER

Over the years, it has become a well-known morning- or day-trip for anyone just wanting to escape the city. “Water is a precious resource. We cannot allow it to run to waste. We are losing about 25% of our treated water to leaks right now,” Lovemore said. At the Council Meeting on December 1, councillors tasked officials and the relevant political role-players with aggressively addressing our high water losses. A primary target – agreed at the council meeting – is the reduction of the turnaround time in attending to and repairing water leaks from the current, unacceptable 15 to 24 days to a maximum of 5 days within three months, i.e. by the end of February 2017. “In order to fix leaks, we need plumbers. Our municipality is woefully short of these artisans. Where we should have 54 plumbers in our Water and Sanitation Directorate, we had only 21. It is simply impossible to win the war on leaks in such circumstances,” Lovemore said. “We are pleased to announce that we are filling these vacancies, as we identify funding. The first seven of our new plumbers commenced their tenure with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on December 1.

Other achievements include overall first place at club level for the year, third place in the National WOMZA series, fourth place in the National MSA series, first place in the National North vs South MX challenge. Kyle is moving up to the MX 65cc class in 2017. Supporting him at the awards ceremony were his parents Claire and Neville Townsend. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
PE shoppers raise over R1.5 million in MySchool funds REPORTER THE Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth (AWS PE) recently received a whopping R60 272.45 as part of the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme. Thanks to cardholders in the Port Elizabeth area, R1 574 964.59 has been raised this year for a range of schools, charities and conservation organisations. MySchool cardholders can nominate up to three beneficiaries when they swipe their cards at participating retailers every time they shop. The retailers make contributions on behalf of cardholders based on a percentage of the amount they spend, which is then distributed to the schools, charities or conservation bodies of their choice, at no additional costs to the shoppers. Based on the more than R60 000 raised, AWS PE is definitely a firm favourite of PE MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet cardholders. Based in Walmer, AWS PE rescues, rehabilitates and shelters all kinds of unwanted, neglected and abandoned animals. Empowered to enforce the Animal Protection Act, AWS PE runs a 24-hour service to respond to reports of animal cruelty. Their facilities include catteries and kennels, as well as shelters for farm animals, other animals and birds. The organisation runs both a lost and found service and an adoption programme. Another popular beneficiary among PE cardholders is the Aurora Special Care Centre, also based in Walmer. Aurora runs both Residential and Stimulation Care centres providing professional care for profoundly mentally and physically handicapped children, as well as special needs children and adults.
Nationally, the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet programme has raised over R70 million for South African schools, charities and environmental organisations in the last financial year thanks to the support of 1.2 million customers choosing to give back as they shop. For schools and non-profit organisations across the country, the programme has become an important fundraising partner, making a much-needed contribution to the on-going funds they need to carry on their vital work. “Every year it’s a delight to see how cardholders, schools, charities and businesses are working together to make every swipe count,” said Pieter Twine, MySchool’s General Manager. “We have become one of the country’s biggest community fundraising programmes that enables South Africans to make a difference, just by shopping. Well done, PE shoppers, for playing your part!” Nolovuyo “Shorty” Ncayo, a kennel staff member at the Animal Welfare Society in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, with a puppy. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Swanepoel se toekoms is vir hom uitgestippel. In 2017 pak hy ’n meestersgraad in chemiese ingenieurswese onder prof. Cara Swart aan en daarna wil hy sy doktorsgraad behaal. Omdat hy met ’n beurs van Sasol studeer,
gaan hy daarna by dié maatskappy werk. Volgens Viljoen is Swanepoel se ingenieur-

Hy is ’n besonder waardige ontvanger.” Swanepoel het matriek met agt onderskeidings geslaag en die tweede hoogste punte in die Oos-Kaap behaal.

Turning business into goodness REPORTER UNEMPLOYED youth from previously disadvantaged communities not only get the chance to become trained baristas, but they also form part of an initiative which sees all the profits generated pumped back into the social upliftment of the needy. The recently launched Coffee For A Cause Café at the Boardwalk is a speciality coffee pop-up store that uses all profits generated for social good through the Red Band Barista Academy, which trains unemployed youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds in the art of coffee pouring and latte art. To date, the academy has trained 70 new baristas with the majority having been employed at local coffee shops around the city. Coffee For A Cause is a fundraising initiative of the Leva Foundation, a non-profit organization (NPO) in Port Elizabeth. It has gained popularity with its participa-
tion at the Valley Market. To date, it has raised R150 000 for social upliftment and the training of baristas. Coffee For A Cause has partnered with the Boardwalk over the festive season. It will be selling artisanal coffees, refreshments and confectionery items. All profits will go to the Red Band Barista Academy in order to continue training baristas and help them find employment. “The set-up and shop fit of the coffee shop was done by our Woodwork team. This project helps homeless men get off the street through the building of pallet furniture,” said Ryan le Roux, Managing Director of the Leva Foundation. “Everything in the coffee shop has a purpose and story behind it. We want people to know that even through buying a coffee they will be making a difference to someone’s life. Because if we spend so much of our lives in business and work, surely this time should add value and meaning to the world.”

Miss Junior SA finalist aims to make a difference in girls’ lives REPORTER FROM gracing the PE Express’s front page as the first ever Miss Matric Dance winner to becoming a national finalist in the Miss Junior SA pageant, Chanté Rossouw is definitely going places and not letting the grass grow under her feet on her way there. Rossouw (20) matriculated from DF Malherbe High School in 2014. She is currently a law student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). As part of the Miss Junior SA Pageant, Rossouw is on a mission to raise funds for a Happy Days campaign that aims to provide sanitary pads to more than three million South African schoolgirls and she needs the community’s help to achieve her goal. The Miss Junior SA Pageant and the Happy Days Foundation entered into a partnership that later became the charity of choice in the annual beauty pageant. The Happy Days Foundation was founded by Ramona Kasavan as a non-profit organisation in 2013. It was created to address challenges faced by young women in South Africa. The organisation donates sanitary pads via sponsors and CSI departments and teaches women entrepreneurial skills that help alleviate high levels of unemployment. Caroline Baldwin Botha, the pageant director of Miss Junior South Africa, stated, “The Miss Junior SA Pageant concept is unique compared to other pageants. “The mission, vision and objectives of the pageant are aimed at instilling in contestants the importance of uplifting people in our local communities, building, community pride, promoting intercultural understanding and increasing external appreciation and support of the problems these communities face. “In addition, beauty pageants are about breaking stereotypes and raising awareness of feminine issues, so I can’t think of a better cam-
paign than the Happy Days one in which to have our young ladies participate and make a difference in,” Botha said. Rossouw said, “As part of my journey as a national finalist for Miss Junior SA, I have to raise funds, as well as public awareness of the Happy Days campaign. Each month these girls from disadvantaged communities are in danger of having to skip several days of school for the lack of something most girls take for granted: sanitary pads. “I am very excited about the partnership between Miss Junior SA and Happy Days. I am looking forward to making a difference in the lives of girls who come from underprivileged areas and to help keep them in school,” Rossouw added. Anyone interested in contributing to the cause can contact Chanté on 083 261 1611 or chanterossouw9@gmail.com. Chanté Rossouw from PE is a national finalist in the Miss Junior SA pageant.

Mr Schoeman says farewell after 36 years ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL THE new school year at De Vos Malan Primary School will start without the familiar face of educator Cedric Schoeman, who retired recently. Schoeman had been teaching at De Vos Malan for 36 years and left the learners and parents with a thought-provoking message at his final assembly. “Children are being raised with brand names these days. We were raised singing in the choir and doing piano lessons. We need to bring that back into our communities.” He emphasised the importance of encouraging children to get involved in sport and cultural activities at school. He concluded by saying that although he was looking forward to his early retirement,

he would miss the learners and his colleagues immensely. “I was very young when I started at De Vos Malan. Both my parents died in those years, and a handful of old colleagues have also been buried since. This has been a second family even though we agreed to differ sometimes.” Principal Jonathan Jansen said that Schoeman had been a driving force behind the school’s sporting programme, and has coached soccer, cricket, gymnastics and athletics at school. “Mr Schoeman has been a pillar of strength in the Schauderville Primary Schools Sports Union as convener of sporting codes and organiser of many tours for the school and union,” Jansen said. “The school will miss him for his loyalty and the community for his empathy shown towards the learners and parents alike.”

Filmmaker brothers want to plough experience back ODETTE PARFITT IN January, they exchanged Port Elizabeth for the green pastures and illustrious film industry of Ireland. Now, brothers Tom (26) and James Collins (24) are on their way back to their hometown to pass on the lessons of the industry to the next generation of filmmakers in Port Elizabeth. The brothers will present a three-day workshop from December 19 to 21, to 15 budding filmmakers in the metro – with the possibility of a repeat course in January. It was a love for the city they grew up in that enticed them to come back, said Tom from India, where they are currently working on a documentary film about fair trade in the country’s cotton industry. “We appreciate that many people in the Bay set time aside to educate us and present opportunities,” said Tom. “Therefore, we want to give this gift now, six years later, to people who are in the same circumstances that we were when we started.” The course will especially focus on ways to create films with little money. “The industry
It was a love for the city they grew up in that enticed them to come back... - TOM COLLINS
is very competitive, but we want to share our experience and also pass on techniques that took us years to learn.” Participants will also manufacture a short film of two to three minutes during the course. The brothers only discovered their dream of making films after attending university. Before this love blossomed, Tom studied environmental science while James completed a year of music studies, both at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). “At university, we did have access to a DSLR camera which we used to record our first videos for a surfing video competition. We won a prize in this competition.” Hereafter, they completed an online course and worked for a year at The Media Workshop under the leadership of director David Lister. After making short films for the Father’s House Church for another three years, they relocated to Ireland. “The plan was always to go and work overseas and build up experience in large scale productions. In the beginning, we made shorter marketing videos before we started working as assistant directors for the fifth season of Vikings.” This experience was definitely a highlight for Tom. “I am a big fan of the series. My proudest moment, however, is the work we are currently doing in India. It is easy to get caught up in the glamour of the big productions, but we are actually doing it to build up experience that we can later apply to our own productions.” James confirmed this statement. “I learned a lot and met famous people, but to create this documentary together is a highlight,” he said.

The Secret that I Keep’,” sê sy. “Dis iets wat uitvloei wanneer ek kreatief voel. Ek is nie seker dat ek die soort skrywer is wat kan gaan sit en ’n liedjie skryf oor ’n voorgeskrewe onderwerp nie. “So, ek voel iets en dis maar een van die maniere om uitdrukking daaraan te gee,” sê Barnard. Sy het ook ’n plaaslike kompetisie sowat 20
jaar gelede gewen met die liedjie ‘Harder than it Seems’. Barnard sê haar familie is baie musikaal. “My ma het altyd gelag vir die ABBA-liedjie ‘Thank You for the Music’, want sy het altyd gesê ek kon regtig ‘sing long before I could talk’. Dis ook my eerste herinnering.

Morningside hosts rugby tourney to honour friend REPORTER AFTER the recent tragic passing of Morningside High School learner, Philasande Jimu, the school’s rugby boys paid tribute to their friend by walking from McDonalds to the spot where he passed away and held a moment of silence in respect. They then headed to the school in song
for the Memorial Service followed by a rugby tournament to commemorate World Aids Day on December 1. It was both a sad and exciting day for the learners as they met with children from other areas in the Nelson Mandela Bay and shared their different stories and ideas. They might have been from all different walks of life, but they had one thing in common: a love and passion for rugby.
The event was sponsored by the Department of Sports and Recreation, as well as the Western Suburbs Support Forum (WSSF) which is run by Siyabonga Dabula, Siyanda Jemsana, Chuma Kimberley and Onke Sotyato. Together, these two parties made the day for the children a resounding success. Legal Aid also came on board to show their support and handed out T-shirts and other goodies. “The tournament was the first of its kind in the metro and we have received a large support base, as well as a demand for the event to be an annual event,” said Kimberley. “Some of the kids come from impoverished backgrounds, but that fact didn’t stop them from wanting to experience a new environment and showcase their talents, which is exactly what the WSSF is all about. With the support of teachers from Morningside High School (MHS) the event was successful.”
A nail-biting game between the Ezee Fana Dragons and Mzontsundu High School saw the Dragons claiming victory against Mzontsundu, who never stopped pushing until the last minute. The hosts, MHS, managed to claim third place while Mzontsundu took second place in the first ever Rugby 7’s Tournament at Morningside High School. “We would like to thank Morningside High School, the parents, the clubs and the schools that participated for their support, as well as the Department of Sports and Recreation for their part in making the day a success. “We wish to build greater relationships with all parties involved in making this day possible,” said Kimberley. “Lastly, we believe that every child is a step away from a successful adult and we need to nurture our children and give all of them an equal opportunity to learn and become who they want to be no matter where they come from,” she concluded.
From left are Siyabonga Dabula (WSSF Secretary), Eezy Fana (Eezy Fana Dragons’ Coach), MHS Principal, Dr S.S Pather, and Siyanda Jemsana (WSSF Managing Director). PHOTO: SUPPLIED

High tea raises funds for Madrassa Tus Salaam A SUCCESSFUL ladies’ high tea fundraising event for Madrassa Tus Salaam in Overbaakens was recently held at the Muslim Movement Hall in Parkside. The theme of the fundraising event was “One woman, many roles” with the aim of highlighting the important role of women in society. The event was sold out, with 24 tables and over 200 guests attending. Event coordinator, Nazeema Forbes, said that despite their busy schedules, women came out in droves to show their support for Madrassa Tus Salaam, which is an Islamic learning institution. “Our initial target was to host 20 tables. However, with the overwhelming support received we exceeded our target by four,” Forbes said. “I think it was a wonderful event to get so many
women together at this time of the year when everyone is just looking forward to the holiday break and want to wind down.” Prior to the fundraising event, Madrassa Tus Salaam encouraged members of the community to show their support through hosting a table at the high tea fundraising event. i-Express, a monthly publication of EP Media, also hosted a table. The guest speaker for the event was local attorney, notary public and conveyancer, Tasneem Fredericks, who is also the founder and managing director of the law firm, Fredericks Incorporated. “Her talk focused mainly on the role of Muslim women in business and the many barriers they had to overcome,” Forbes said. “Islam permits women, within its culture to have a job and
even run a business as the business owner. Today, more and more women in Islam have embraced these rights and have become successful entrepreneurs.” Forbes mentioned that another focus of the fundraising event was to acknowledge the elderly. “Each of the 24 hostesses was tasked to bring along an elderly person, as they are at times the most neglected women in our society,” Forbes said. “Our focus was to honour and respect them, so most of the day was spent on spoiling them and making them feel special.” Forbes mentioned that they have already received requests as to when the next high tea will be held. “I think as women, we sometimes need to share with and support each other but most importantly, just get together,” Forbes said. – SASHIKA PILLAY

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA
I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

Motorsport legend Atta Victor saluted ODETTE PARFITT MOTORSPORT legend Atta Victor was saluted in a special way with a funeral service at the Victory Raceway last Friday. Victor died at the age of 69 of a heart attack recently. His name was “virtually synonymous with stock cars” in Port Elizabeth for decades. “Stock cars were his life, and everyone on the track knew Atta,” said Johan van Eck, who knew through their years of participation in motorsport. “We have known each for many years. Atta was always the man with the most beautiful cars, because he visualised something in his head and knew how to build it and make it beautiful. That’s how I will remember him.” Victor retired from racing in the 1980s after he established himself as a national and

provincial champion. He then founded Custom City, where he used his talent to build hearses and limousines. “Atta was the heart of the place. We will all remember how dedicated he was,” said Van Eck. His daughter, Vicky Gillmer, also testified to his hard work. “The day before his death, my father worked on a hearse project,” she said. “He was at his happiest when he could watch drivers race around the track that he had prepared. “We, as his children, will miss the tight hugs, the jokes and old stories he told - but we abide by knowing that he is with Jesus and we will see him again.” )Victory Raceway would like to honour Atta Victor’s legacy in hosting a memorial race in remembrance of the motorsport legend. THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO
What a smashing time of year this is! SOUTH Africa’s hopes of a double victory, by adding a second triumph in the Cape Town leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series to the thrilling victory in Dubai, were dashed last weekend when the seemingly nervous Blitzboks were found wanting before losing to a gritty England by 19 points to 17. The Blitzboks started out nervously and were outmanoeuvred at times by the quickthinking English team. The home side fought back bravely in the second half and might have forced the contest into extra time, but missed the conversion of their final try. Indeed, the week as a whole will not be remembered as one in which all went well for South African sport. You might almost say it was a week that produced quite a bit of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly in equal doses for our beloved country, leaving many sports fans to lick their wounds in private. This, however, does not apply to rugby fans exclusively. With regard to soccer, the game off the field was bad enough, with Kirsten Nematandani, former president of the SA Football Association, being banned for the time being from all football-related activities at national and international levels. Equally important were Shakes Mashaba’s problems with the soccer authorities. Who knows where that will end? But let us take a jump here to the brighter side of things. Two big winners were athletes Wayde van Niekerk and Sports Woman of the Year, Caster Semenya. Van Niekerk was, unsurprisingly, named
South Africa’s Sports Star of the Year following the SA Sports Awards in Bloemfontein, where he was honoured for having smashed long-standing US star, Michael Johnson’s world 400m record. His final time of 43.03 shaved .15 seconds off the American’s mark that had seemed invincible since the Seville World Championships in 1999. In the Brazil Olympics, Van Niekerk stunned the sports world with a flawless run from the eighth lane to not only win the 400m gold for South Africa, but also smash Johnson’s long-standing record. Over and above this, Van Niekerk’s efforts also won him the Best Olympic Athlete’s Award. The only athlete to overshadow the South African was Jamaica’s Usain Bolt with his “triple” in the sprints – 100m, 200m and 400m. “I’m quite excited to see what’s ahead. But I leave that in God’s hands and I take each day as it comes,” Van Niekerk said. He credits much of his success to Coach Ans Botha. “She’s 74,” he says, “but she’s in good health and strength. She knows her stuff. She’s amazing.” In the swimming pool, it has not been all sunshine and smiles for Chad le Clos, despite getting the World Swimming Championships in Windsor, Canada, off to a flying start with the gold medal for the 200m butterfly for the third time in his career. He had to settle for second place in the 100m to Korean, Taehwan Park, who wrested the title from the South African in a new championship record of 1:41.03. Le Clos followed a close 0.62 seconds be-
hind him. Le Clos set up a new 100m butterfly mark of 48.08 seconds the very next day, improving his own world record mark of 48.44. Despite these amazing athletes, not all South Africans in sports kit play for their home country. England’s Keaton Jennings, son of former SA wicketkeeper and coach, Ray, scored an elegant 112 against India in Mumbai just three days after arriving as a replacement. Talk about fate!

And finally, here is something slightly unusual. It is that time of year again when old favourites like Crosby and Sinatra emerge from their CD straightjackets with the likes of White Christmas, Silent Night, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and I’ll be Home for Christmas. Admittedly, it has nothing to do with sport, but it is a nice way of saying to you all out there, “Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas now!”

Triathletes prepare for Summer Series MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THIS year’s About IT Triathlon Summer Series will be taking place on December 16, 18, 21 and 26 and is ideal for both the seasoned and novice triathletes. As a Sprint Distance triathlon, participants will tackle a 750m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run. The Series is open to both individuals and teams. The first three races are scheduled for Pollok Beach, Summerstrand, whilst the race on December 26 is in Port St Francis. The About IT Triathlon Summer Series is supported by aQuellé, Caltex Eastern Cape, Dynamic Express Services, Black Sheep, Oracle Media, Zone 3 and High 5 Sports Nutrition. A total of R7 500 cash and medals are up for grabs for the overall Series winners. Those who finish the races will receive medals at each of the four races this season. The Port Elizabeth races will start at 8am and the Port St Francis race at 8.30am. The Series entry fee is R200 per person and R300 per team. Online registration is recommended and can be done on www.trisummerseries.co.za. Visit the website for race routes and online registration. Damp year end for aQuellé series While the rain and wind may have kept away
the social family members, more than 300 participants braved the conditions at Hobie Beach on Sunday morning to take part in the fifth round of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series, the final race of 2016. The choppy seas took its toll on the swimmers, making for a very testing swim in the morning. This, however, did not seem to upset the pace of 19-year-old Deshaan Pillay in the 3km swim. Pillay won the long distance swim with a time of 38:26, with Cullen Biddulph taking second place and former national swimmer Kevin Richards being placed third. In the ladies’ 3km swim, it was 17-year-old St Francis Bay swimmer, Amica de Jager, who won with a time of 40:54, with Hannah Haswell in second place and Lara Truter in third. The 2km Ocean Swim saw unbeaten champion, Daniel Jones, finishing first with a time of 27:16, while Jarryd Cooke came in second and Michael Kingston in third. Kingston’s wife, Liza, won the ladies’ race from De Jager’s older sister, Chane, with Delwen Henderson in third place. The 1km Ocean Swim that took place on Monday, December 12, was won by Cole Craig with a time of 13:40, while Jamie Riddle was placed second and Barry Serfontein third. Kirsten Marriott took the ladies’ 1km swim in 15:23 with Britney Brown in second place and Rebecca Jade Newman in third. The 400m Ocean Swim is a new distance intro-
