Coega kicks off new year with big plans for EC REPORTER THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) opened its doors on January 3 with revived vigour and optimism. “The start of this year is a continuation of the hard work already put in by everyone. The year 2017 ushers the CDC into the final quarter of the Financial Year 2016/17,” said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC unit head marketing and communications. The organisation is optimistic

that this year will once again highlight the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) as a prime investment destination of choice culminating in several projects coming to the shores of the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). All of this combusted with the CDC taking on projects outside of the IDZ through its infrastructure development programme with the objective of expediting service delivery to South African citizens on behalf of government. Projects currently under construction within the IDZ are no

fewer than 6 (six). At least five (5) of these are expected to become operational by end of the FY 2016/17. “Of critical importance for the CDC is the projects contribution to socio-economic development,” says Dr Vilakazi. “Five hundred and fifty five (555) people are currently contracted on the projects in the IDZ, 70% of who are Nelson Mandela Bay-based residents. Giving credence to our vision to become the leading catalyst for championing of the socio-economic growth,” says Vilakazi.

In the 2015/2016 period, CDC created 18 366 jobs (96 776 since inception), through projects in the IDZ and its infrastructure development programme. In addition, the CDC had 36 operational investors with a combined investment value of R6.609 billion. Some of the highlight projects within the IDZ for the year ahead include: •The construction commencement of BAIC for a completely knocked down (CKD) automotive manufacturing plant in the Coega IDZ

•Implementation of energy-related projects such as the gas-topower programme with 1000 MW of the power facility allocated to the IDZ. This project is key for energy security, diversity and socioeconomic development. According to Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), in the 2015/2016 financial year the CDC contributed 0,15% to the Eastern Cape’s GDP and 0,42% to the Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy and in this current financial year (2016/17), the CDC is projecting to add even more.

Boost for NMMU Ocean Sciences REPORTER NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) efforts towards the establishment of the country’s first dedicated maritime centre of excellence were boosted with the recent transfer of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) building into its name. The university now officially owns the adjacent CSIR building that will serve as the institution’s Ocean Sciences Campus, effectively catapulting the already advanced work towards the establishment of the envisaged marine and maritime-related hub. The official transfer of the property is the culmination of two years of extensive planning and strategising on how the university’s R60 million investment into the venture would unfold. In this time, the university has been part of a broad consultative process both internally and externally to actively engage all relevant stakeholders in the development of the new campus. It has always been the university’s vision to have dedicated Ocean Sciences Campus and, when Vice-Chancellor Professor Derrick Swartz learnt of the possible sale of CSIR building, an opportunity was seized. The Ocean Sciences Campus is the Univer-

sity’s answer to what has emerged as the country’s least explored economic resource – its oceans. The blue, or oceans, economy has become a major focus for South Africa, with government’s massive Operation Phakisa initiative pushing to unlock and effectively tap into the largely untapped oceans economy by capitalising on the country’s 3 200km coastline. The University’s overarching strategy towards specialising in ocean sciences studies is in line with Operation Phakisa, which aims to create a million jobs and inject up to R177 billion into the national economy by 2033. NMMU has significant research capabilities in maritime and ocean sciences. It is also well positioned in Algoa Bay and boasts proximity and access to two major ports, effectively boosting its potential as a major player in the blue economy. The University’s vision for the Campus is that of a research commons, innovatively bringing together the expertise of multiple faculties in a multi- and transdisciplinary approach to create news ways of thinking and doing in relation to ocean sciences. “Because it’s a new thing for us, we have gone about encouraging faculties to conceptualise programmes that would fall under it,” said Institutional Planning senior director, Professor Heather Nel. “This is very important because we might

focus on sustainability of the oceans – which is the core aim of this – but we also need to find a balance between science and impact on environment.” With the sale officially through, work is set continue in earnest towards the redesigning of the space to become a leading world-class maritime campus. Partnership is a key aspect of the University’s ocean science strategy because of the lack of all the necessary expertise to tackle the space and unlock the full potential of the surrounding oceans. The University will continue to host various roundtable discussions and symposiums on the ocean’s economy, while forging partnerships with experienced institutions in the maritime field that often lead to an exchange of skills. “We partner with other universities nationally, as well as with global institutions that are leaders in maritime – Norway, Finland, Sweden and Southampton in the United Kingdom – to explore staff and student exchanges. That is proving to be very useful. There is a lot that can be done through partnering that can’t be done alone,” Prof Nel said. The Ocean Sciences Campus will not house all of the University’s maritime programmes but will instead have a postgraduate focus so as not to duplicate existing courses that tie or feed into ocean sciences.

Makupula sees positive in EC poor matric results

Class of 2017 to be prepared for job market

MATRIC results of 2016 are out and again the Eastern Cape is languishing at the bottom as the poorest performer. Five of the poorest performing districts in the country are from this province in Libode, Lusikisiki, Ngcobo, Dutywa and Lady Frere. All five districts registered less than 50% pass rate. The Eastern Cape registered a 59.3% pass rate – a slight increase of 2.5% from 2015. It is the only province to register less than 60%. MEC for Education Mandla Makupula is, however, positive that the province is on the rise and said that his department can be proud of the “sustainable upwards trajectory.” “The Class of 2016 has had to perform in a very different academic context, where the stakes have risen in terms of levels of difficulty in all subjects. “The improvements made in 2016 must be

seen in the light of intervention programmes the Department has put in place to mitigate the impact of the high stakes NCS (CAPS) curriculum,” said Makupula. Makupula also highlighted that the biggest concern of Eastern Cape matrics was that 70% of them came from the poorest schools, quintile one to three, and recorded 49.5% to 57.9%. The richer schools, quintile four and five, were 81.5% and 95.3% respectively. These results prove that the poorest schools are unsurprisingly the least performing schools in the province. Holy Cross Senior Secondary School is one of the few noble exceptions in this year’s matric results particularly for the former Transkei region. The quintile 3 school produced one of the country’s top performers in Siphokazi Hlalukana who came second in this quintile nationally. – BUNTU GOTYWA

THE matric class of 2016 last week received their final examination results, and business has already teamed up with the Department of Education to boost the job prospects of 2017 matriculants. Plans for the country’s largest Career Guidance Initiative - The Working World Exhibition - were announced recently. The Working World Exhibition, now in its 18th year, will be hosted at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium from February 28 to March 2 with the participation of business and leading educational institutions including Coega, The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). Organised by Inkanyezi Events, with the endorsement of the Department of Education and Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, the Working World Exhibition provides Worldclass Career Guidance Textbooks, resources and personal career guidance counselling to up to 20 000 Grade 12 learners, free, every year.

While Career Guidance Workbooks, approved by the Education Department for use as part of the Grade 12 Life Orientation Curriculum are distributed to Grade 12s at the beginning of the year, the initiative culminates with an exhibition attended by up to 100 exhibiting institutions, including corporates, and 15 000 matrics. Inkanyezi CEO Andrew Binning said employers like Rosatom, Coega, Stats SA, Volkswagen, SA Police Services and The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) would exhibit alongside a spectrum of public and private educational institutions. These include: NMMU, Rhodes University, Port Elizabeth College, Varsity College, East Cape Midlands College, eta College and Total Concept Beauty Academy. The exhibition is open from 8:30am to 3pm each day. Entry is free to members of the public and school groups are required to book specific time slots to visit.

“Hy is ’n suksesverhaal.

Parents concerned about Tristan studying so hard, eating little ROSLYN BAATJIES HER parents fought with her to get her to eat and were somewhat concerned because she was focused only on her exam preparations, but last Thursday, Tristan Dampies of Salsoneville in Port Elizabeth heard that her hard work earned her six distinctions in the 2016 matric examinations. Tristan, who was Sanctor Secondary School’s deputy head girl last year, achieved distinctions is English Home Language, Afrikaans Additional Language, life orientation, life sciences, business studies and geography. “I did not expect these results. I have to pinch myself to make sure it is the truth.

“I am very relieved and it feels as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.” According to the former captain of the debate team, she was raised to always persevere in her endeavours. “During the exam period, our family had financial difficulties, but I kept my wits about myself and concentrated on my preparations. “My mother, Melanie, motivated me spititually and I maintained my determination to do well because I want to ensure a better life for me and my family.” Lindsay Dampies described his daughter as disciplined. “The wall was covered with study timetables and the table with study material. We had to fight with her to eat properly,” said a proud Dampies. Nadirah Abader, Head of Department for English and Dampies’ teacher since Grade 9, said she was bursting with pride. “Since I started teaching her, she was a model student. She worked hard, had the right attitude and always had respect for her classmates,” Abader added. Dampies will be studying journalism at the NMMU.

Pay municipal account and win a car, cash ROSLYN BAATJIES RESIDENTS of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro whose municipal accounts were paid on time can win one of two brand new cars in July. Everyone - except councillors, business enterprises and municipal workers - will be eligible to win the car- and cash prizes, said Retief Odendaal, member of the mayoral committee for Budget and Treasury. “We want to send the message to our municipal account holders to make their accounts a priority. It looks like 2017 is going to be a difficult financial year and it is also going to have an impact on the municipality. Our residents must try to settle their debt,” Odendaal said. According to him, the recovery rate in July last year was just under 90%. The metro’s budgeted recovery rate is 94%. “In November, our recovery rate was about 100%. We are happy about the progress that we have made. “In November, 7 156 households made arrangements with regard to outstanding payments to the value of R68 million.” EOH Mthombo, the service provider that verifies the water- and electricity meter data at properties, is sponsoring the competition. “EOH spent about R1 million on marketing and prizes for the competition and I hope that we will see the fruits of it in a couple of months. “There are cash prizes of R10 000 and R5 000 respectively. Lucky draws for this will take

place at the end of February and March. Lucky draws for the two Chevrolet Sparks will take place at the end of July.” Leslie Reddy, EOH’s director for the public sector, said that there will also be a R50 000 prize for the ward that improves the most in their account payments. Mbuzeli Nogqala, the Director of Revenue Management and Customer Care for the municipality, said that all six municipal areas can win prizes of R10 000 or R5 000. “It is a lucky draw and the municipality’s internal audit department will play a role as observers.” How to win:

Panda is baie dankbaar vir Van Eyck se groothartigheid.

The awards took place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on December 6 and were hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) in partnership with Brand South Africa and Proudly South African. The Managing Director and founder of AM Group, Anda Maqanda (32), could not contain his excitement after being announced the winner of the category with a Cape Town-based enterprise, Computers 4 Kids. “We are more than excited because the award does not only bring joy to me as the owner of the company, but it’s a source of pride and inspiration to everyone who is part of this business. To be recognised in national awards really means that there is something good that we as a company are doing. This will give us more motivation to continue working harder and growing the business,” said an elated Maqanda.

AM Group, an engineering business specialising in overhead power lines, solar systems, and high voltage substations was also a finalist in the Young Entrepreneur category of the awards. “We knew we were facing a tough competition from other companies that entered the awards from various parts of the country, but to us being finalists in the two categories was an achievement we were content with. To win one of the two was the cherry on top,” quipped Maqanda. He started the AM Group in 2008 at the age of 24 after quitting his job at Eskom where he worked as a project engineer. His vision to grow the business was never distracted and today the company employs 156 people. The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, said the SMME Award acknowledged small, medium and micro business enterprises as a key enabler of economic growth and employment in South Africa. “The company that wins this award should have illustrated its sustainability, as well as future potential, to grow and create more local jobs. In all economies of the world, the small business sector is the engine of job creation and South Africa is no exception,” said Minister Davies.

NitroPark sponsors Alexander Road waterpolo team REPORTER NITROPARK has announced their sponsorship of the Alexander Road High School 1st Waterpolo Boys team for the next two seasons. Under the guidance of Dr Peter Manser, principal of Alexander Road High School, the school’s motto Nil Sine Labore (which loosely translates to ‘the altogether experience’) is applied throughout the system, from the classroom to the sports fields. Dr Manser believes in everyone participating. Winning is not the only factor that counts; it is also important to work as a team and show good sportsmanship. These are also the values NitroPark’s owners, Andrew Beuster and Haiden Webb, wish to promote among the youth today. They have therefore decided to support youth enrolment in sport and physical activity. They believe that sport contributes to a better world and young people who participate in sport learn essential life skills such as leadership, disci-

In addition to NitroPark sponsoring the teams’ kit for the next two years, they will also be hosting team building evenings which will bring work and play together and allow the boys to grow as a team.

“Ek was (verlede) jaar net onseker oor my toekomsplanne as gevolg van die proteste by universiteite,” sê sy.

Dié A’s is in inligtingstegnologie, Afrikaans, Engels, wiskunde, rekeningkunde, lewensoriëntering en fisiese wetenskap. “Die eindeksamen was vir my verskriklik opwindend,” sê hy.

Vibrant young lineup named for Showtime revue REPORTER AFTER a lengthy auditions process, a strong line-up of vibrant young performers were selected and went into the first phase of rehearsals in November last year for the highly popular annual Clover Showtime Awards Young Talent Development 2017 revue, A Grand Night for Singing, which will be seen on the Little Theatre stage this January. Presented for the second time in collaboration with the PE Musical and Dramatic Society, the production will salute the twin Richard Rodgers song books, with lyricists Lorenz “Larry” Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II, with several surprises thrown in along with the song, dance and comedy. Returning to lead the female core cast will be Shannon Hubbard, who impressed in the 2016 revue, The Pleasure of Your Company. Hubbard will be joined by new female Showtimers Abigail Ranwell, Amber April, Isabella Rosochacki, Kayla Mathiesen, Kelly-Lee Jeffrey, Kyrah Lloyd and Kyla Smit. James van der Merwe is also returning, joined by newcomers Arthur Daniels and Sean Cady. The dancers will be Britney Shaw, Gia Smith, Ma-Bell Muller (also making a Showtime return), Rachel Parker, Kayla Auld and Skye Phillips.

Also returning, from a couple of years ago, will be a group of 10 singing boys and girls from Charlo Primary School. They are Lea Carelse, Anneke Pienaar, Kaylin Roberts, Lené Scheepers, Dané Van Dyk, Meagan Vogel, Stefan Basson, Jared Doubell, Dillon Roberts and Sam Vos. Although they will be seen in several many company sequences, they will be specially featured in two routines in the show. The show will once more be devised and written by Bob Eveleigh, as was the case in 2016, with Marlene Pieterse directing and Wayne Hughes as Musical and Vocal Director. Siobhan Day will be making her debut as a Showtime choreographer after winning many Clover Showtime Junior Awards for her dance and movement staging in various High and Primary School productions. Also back from 2016 are Rocky Mann and Lance Bright, who will once again be the technical consultants, with Gwen Davis as Production Secretary, Brenda Ower as Special Assistant to the Producer and Director and Robyn Unsworth as Stage Manager. A Grand Night for Singing will be the 27th birthday of the Clover Showtime Revue and will run from January 23 to 28, including the Junior and Senior Clover Showtime Awards nights on January 24 and 27 respectively.

Dowwe Dolla to make a stop in Bay McLaren-sirkusbaas mor oor weiering van staanplek REPORTER

DOWWE Dolla has been South Africa’s most loved dumb blonde for more than two decades now and she is bringing her special brand of comedy to Nelson Mandela Bay.

In her latest show, she will explore the vast world of social media. Because social media is where “everything is happening” nowadays, it’s only right that Dolla investigate this phenomenon. In the process of trying to understand the difference between Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Solitaire, Dolla discovers why women still keep men around and explains the real secret behind a braai which, in turn, leads to heavy topics such as Trophy hunting, arachnophobia, white guilt, and Hannibal Lecter. This latest show will feature “Ouma Dowe Dolla” (also performed by Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck) for the first time to give a more historical (or maybe hysterical) perspective to everyday life in South Africa. Expect another “laugh a minute” verbal-tsunami from SA’s favourite blonde on February 9 at the Barkly Street Theatre in Uitenhage at 8pm. Tickets at R120 are available at 082 809 4272. ; Dowwe Dolla is bringing her special brand of comedy to Nelson Mandela Bay. PHOTO:ROBERT HAMBLIN

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 11 JANUARY 2017

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

Cricket’s magic words – ‘Kolpak Time’ IF cricket’s your game you’ll surely remember the names – the incomparable Don Bradman, Len Hutton, dashing Denis Compton; then, going closer to home, the likes of Dudley Nourse, Eric Rowan and others – all of them belonging to the list of magical performers on the game’s international stage going right back to the inimitable WG Grace. Higher than that you can’t go! If you love cricket you will at least have heard of them; read of their many exploits on the field of play with bat or ball, or both! Besides cricket skill what else do they have in common? Yes, that’s it – they all belong to the past, some of it very distant now. Yes, “time marches on,” as they say – which present day lovers of the game ought to try to remember. Yes, that’s what concerns us today: heavy

criticism circulating the very blood of the game; criticism that some present day stars – in particular two outstanding Proteas in Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw, who have opted to continue their careers with the English County Championship side, Hampshire, much to the disgust of South African coach, Russell Domingo. The coach last week launched a blistering attack on both players, outstanding fast bowler Abbott and batsman Rossouw. The signing of the two effectively ends their careers with South African cricket. In turn Cricket SA has wasted no time in cancelling both their contracts. Reacting to the move by the two South Africans, coach Domingo wasted no time in slamming both, holding nothing back as last week ended with the Proteas taking a 2-0 lead in the trouncing of Sri Lanka at

Newlands in their four-match series. Domingo had so faithfully encouraged 27year-old Rossouw since he made his international debut at just 23 in 2014, shielding the youngster after the left-hander started his ODI career with four ducks in his first six matches. The coach’s disappointment was understandable. It seemed at times he was fighting a lone battle to keep the youngster in the Test match loop. Bitterly upset, he now says: “Yes, very disappointed. That’s the truth. He toured Australia as the back-up Test batsman. He’s the guy we backed after four ducks. We invested in him massively. If he was a player of colour everyone would have slammed us, would have said, ‘transformation’.” The coach’s disappointment included Abbott. There’s no doubt both players would have been an integral part of SA’s plans. Its

cricket chief, Haroon Lorgat, admitted to “disappointment” at the turn of events. He added: “No one is guaranteed a place to play for his country, but he had as good a chance as any other player to win top honours.” But... there’s one thing Domingo and his boss seem to be missing here. Yes, in the old days when money was not an issue, when all that counted was the honour of representing your country, none of this would have mattered. But times have changed. Unless you’re born with a golden spoon in the mouth, money counts. A financial chance such as that going the way of Abbott and Rossouw doesn’t present itself every day. And there’s no shame, surely, in looking after one’s own interests first. Unhappily, that isn’t today’s norm. These days it’s “Kolpak Time” – every man for himself!

ZSPORTS WORLD: MICHAEL ZOETMULDER

R10 000 lucky prize for river mile THE Spar Summer Festival, which incorporates Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, the SPAR River Mile, has announced a R10 000 cash lucky draw prize for one lucky Mile Swimmer when the event takes place on Sunday, February 26. A festival of activities for the whole family just got a whole lot more interesting for all those who would like to swim the Mile race on the Sunday afternoon. Drawn by way of lucky draw, one finisher of the Men’s or La-

dies’ Mile races who is present at the prize giving will walk away with R10 000 cash. Possibly one of the biggest cash lucky draw prizes in any of the sporting events in Nelson Mandela Bay. The festival will take place over the weekend of February 25 and 26 at Cannonville on the Sundays River just 15 minutes outside of Port Elizabeth and will feature a host of festival activities including the massive Wimpy Rotary Kids Zone for children 12 years and under, the Castle Lite Beer Garden and loads of entertainment for the whole family. On the sporting front, the Saturday events will include the Wimpy 5km Family Fun Run, the Mountain Bike Races, the Double Mile swim, disabled Mile swim, the family half-mile swim and the ‘Anything

that Floats’ where you’re able to bring all your inflatable beach and pool toys and tackle the half-mile down the river with the incoming tide. On the Sunday, the water activities will include the Wakaberry Kids across the river races and the two feature Mile events. Finishers medals, hamper prizes and loads of cash and product lucky draw prizes are up for grabs across all the events. See www.zsports.co.za for further information on the SPAR Summer Festival and also to register for one or more of the various sporting events on offer. The Anything that Floats event is free entry so just come on the day with your inflatable and jump in. Great start to ocean series The weather was fantastic for the start of the second half of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series which saw round 6 taking place at Hobie Beach on Sunday morning with over 500 participants entering for the events. Africa’s largest family beach event enjoyed its best beach weather of the season with flat clear ocean conditions for the swimmers. Grobbie Grobler and Belinda Niemand won the 5km Beach Walk whilst Vuyiswa Mtimku-

lu and Tara Sacke won the 5km Beach Run. The 400m swim was won by Connor Craig and Tiara Finnis, Cole Craig and Kirsten Marriott winning the 1km swim, Daniel Jones and Chane de Jager the 2km swim whilst Chris Mowbray and Amica De Jager won the 3km Ocean Swim. The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series returns on Sunday, January 22, the day after the Eastern Province Triathlon Championships which will be taking place on Saturday 21st, with pre-registration at News Café, Boardwalk on Friday 20th between 5pm and 7pm. Three different distances are being offered for this Triathlon, the Youth, Sprint and Olympic Distance Triathlons. All the swimming action returns to Marina Martinique this Sunday for the next round of the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics EC Swim Challenge Series which offers a 500m swim, 1km, 3km, 5km and 10km swims. MOTORING 19

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

We go crossover with Mazda’s CX3 MAZDA certainly knows how to design goodlooking cars. And one of them is the CX-3 the crossover version of the Mazda 3. The CX-3 is also one of the 10 finalists in the prestige South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ)’s WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition. The model test driven is the top of the range Mazda CX-3 2.0L Individual with automatic gearbox which retails at R355 400. The CX-3 range starts with a price tag of R277 800. Design The All-New Mazda CX-3 features their KODO - Soul of Motion design language and offers the full suite of Skyactiv Technologies. According to Mazda, Skyactiv is a series of technologies developed by Mazda which increase fuel efficiency and engine output. Skyactiv comprises new engines, transmissions, body, and chassis which also provide for a connectedness between car and driver. The CX-3 is a compact crossover that looks like a premium product and certainly is a head-turner – and the top of the range vehicle test driven comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and daytime running lights as standard features. Its crossover character is accentuated by twin exhausts, black mouldings, a good looking roof spoiler, and window frames with black trim. The CX-3 is available in three specification levels starting with the Active, followed by the Dynamic and then the top of the range Individual. And it certainly is good-looking on the inside too. It has a smart-looking interior with an upmarket design. As is the case with the Mazda 3, the dashboard is dominated by a tablet-like

touchscreen display for the multimedia system – a feature which I think is extremely good on the eyes. The display houses the music and infotainment system which can be operated with the touchscreen or with joystick type controls between the two front seats. It also displays the rear camera when the car is put into reverse. The CX-3 has plenty of standard features such as Bluetooth, climate control, power steering, electric windows and parking sensors. The top of the range test model was also fitted with keyless entry, a start/stop button with i-stop for better fuel consumption. Red accents with a suede look and stitched leather all add to the upmarket feel of the inside – not to mention the sunroof. The seats for the back-seat passengers are also comfortable and spacious. I also liked the storage spaces – with enough stowage spaces to hold keys, cellphone, access cards, remotes and of course coffee cups and water bottles. Engine All the CX-3 models are powered by a 2,0-litre petrol engine. The test model featured a smooth, six-speed automatic gearbox but it is also available with manual transmission in the Active and Dynamic models. The Individual model is only available with an automatic transmission. And the Auto gearbox certainly is a bonus. The ride quality is smooth and enjoyable and dealt well with poor road conditions. Mazda claims the CX-3 has an average fuel use of 6,1 litres every 100km but the test drive found it’s closer to 8.1 litre/100km – which was all done

exclusively on the urban commute. Specs and pricing When designing the new CX-3, Mazda focused on those things that people regard as essential in a car. It is a combination of Mazda’s latest technology and design, maximised fuel efficiency and the latest active safety and connectivity technology. Model lineup and Pricing

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 11 JANUARY 2017

Modern Pentathlon finishes year on high note THE month of December was a very busy one for the Nelson Mandela Bay Modern Pentathlon Association. All in all they held four events in just six days to bring an end to the year and first half of the 2016/2017 season. On Saturday, December 10, the first Tetrathlon of the season was held at the picturesque Woodridge College. The first Tetrathlon event was the fencing discipline. This event was expertly managed by expert fencer and coach, JonPaul Raper, from the Excelsior Fencing Club in PE. In Tetrathlon athletes are given scores in each individual discipline which are then added up to determine the final score. Tetrathlon is a sport for all ages and two six-year-olds participated in the event. Both these boys already dreaming of Olympic glory in Modern Pentathlon. After a competitive session of fencing, athletes turned their attention to the pool. This came almost as relief to the athletes on the sunny day. More good performances followed in the pool by the athletes. The next event was the Combined Event. This event includes shooting with a Laser Pistol and running a prescribed distance. This is another event that requires super focus and control in the shooting and then an explosion of energy in the run. In the end Youth E athletes Ludgen le Roux and Keira van Heerden were the winners of their age groups, as well as the top male and female points scorers. The performances at this event showed why as a district they are one of the top contenders at SA Champs, especially in the younger divisions. Triathle Later on the same day at the same venue the NMBMPA held the first Triathle of the season. Triathle is an exciting sport with very small margins; a race can change on a poor shoe change or one good or bad round of shooting. Triathle starts with a small sprint to the laser

pistols where one is required to hit five targets or try for 50 seconds. From there they run to the transition area, taking their shoes off and swimming the prescribed distance. Once done with the swim, shoes have to be put back on to complete the run distance back to the shooting station. In the first race two six-year-olds, Josh Marais and Danny Baxter, battled it out for first place with their shooting ability really impressing everyone. In the end Danny managed to take the victory in the Youth F age group. In the Youth E girls’ race Keira van Heerden proved too strong for her competition on the day while the Youth E boys’ race proved to be the race of the day with very small margins swinging the race in the favour of Tristan Marais. In other divisions Ruan le Roux won the Youth D boys’ race, Keegan van Heerden won the Youth C boys’ race, Damien Smith the Youth B boys’ race, Rhys Poovan (from East London) won the Youth A race and Gareth Vorster won the Junior division. The Youth C girls’ race was won by another East London competitor Sanchia Poovan. Laser Run On Sunday, December 22, the grey skies and drizzle in the air could not dampen the spirits of the athletes competing in the first Laser Run of the season. Among the athletes competing, there were nine athletes who had competed at the Laser Run World Champs in Lisbon, Portugal in October, including the Youth E World Champion Tristan Marais. The venue was full of twists and turns and made for difficult racing conditions but the athletes all handled this with ease, despite a fall here and there. Laser Run is the same as the Combined Event mentioned earlier. The winners of the different categories were as follows: Youth F Boys – Alexander Serfontein, Youth E Boys – Tristan Marais, Youth E Girls – Keira van Heerden Youth D Boys – Ruan le Roux

Youth C Boys – Keegan van Heerden Youth C Girls – Sanchia Poovan Youth B Boys – Damien Smith Youth A Boys – Rhys Poovan Junior Male – Gareth Vorster Laser Run is an exciting new sport that mixes focus and control with speed and endurance. Cape Town will be playing host to the 2017 Laser Run World Champs in October. The Association is looking to grow Laser Run in PE in order to send a strong team to the World Champs. Biathle midseason champs The second annual Biathle Mid-season Champs were held at St George’s School swimming centre. This event, first held last year, has become a family favourite. As athletes are racing for medals the competition is serious, but a fun relay event is held where athletes, siblings, parents and friends can make up relay teams to compete. This year a younger sibling chocolate race was also held. This year’s event saw a few first-time athletes who performed really well. Although some of the regulars had already gone on holiday all races were very competitive. The results per age group starting with the gold medallists are as follows: Youth F Boys – Alexander Serfontein, Danny Baxter, Nathan Appels Youth F Girls – Elah Duru, Nicola Loest, Tatum Lowe Youth E Boys – Jayson Archibald, Daniel Richter, Tristan Marais Youth E Girls – Keira van Heerden, Myra Viduya, Megan Hough Youth D Boys – Ruan le Roux, Corban Olivier, Aidan Ackerman Youth D Girls – Robyn Hough, Jasmine Witthum Youth C Boys – Kyle White, Christian Appels, Arno van Heerden Youth C Girls – Anke Serfontein, Bella Archibald, Kerri-Lee Barnard Youth B Boys – Damien Smith, Andrew McCallum Youth A Boys – Stephan Neethling, Daniel
