PSALM 107:4-9 DON’T WASTE YOUR WILDERNESS
Simplicity and Fasting are Voluntary but Wilderness usually is not. Sooner or later all of us will spend time in the Wilderness. We will have so many questions: how did I get here? Where is God in this? Does God still love me? It’s literally Be-wildering.
In Scripture, John the Baptist chose to live there, Moses led the Children of Israel there until the first generation passed away and a new tough generation was ready to take the Promised Land.
Today we will look at 3 Wilderness stories:
• Hagar, who was in the Wilderness through no fault of her own
• Jacob, who was in the Wilderness because of his own bad choices
• Jesus, who used His Wilderness time to talk with God, resist temptation and clarify his purpose
Hagar: her story is in Genesis 16 and 21. She is used and mistreated by Abraham and Sarah and sent away with her son Ishmael. She calls God the One who sees and her son she names God Hears.
Jacob: his story begins in Genesis 25. He was born into a blessed family and knew he would rule over his brother, but he schemes as though he has to get his blessing by force. The birthright, love, and wealth do not bring him what he’s longing for. Then he wrestles with God in the wilderness and his brother miraculously forgives him. And God is now his God.
Jesus: one of his Wilderness temptation stories is in Luke 4. How did Jesus use his wilderness time? He went to pray and think about John the Baptist’s description of his ministry, he withstood temptation and he emerged with clarity and purpose to tell the world that he was a Messiah of Good News.
God can use Wilderness to bring you strength and purpose, don’t let that time be wasted.
There will be an end to Wilderness!
