PSALM 27:1-4: BEHOLDING TRUTH
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. // Psalm 27:4
Our calling is not just to know about God, but to know God. This means the spiritual discipline of studying God’s Word has a very specific purpose, which is to lead us into a deeper encounter with the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. And that should change us. In the words of Bernard of Clairvaux, when we come to the recognition that we’re encountering God it leads to a re-cognition of how we think and live.
• In the 27th Psalm, David claims, “One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after…” What is the one thing you would ask of God?
• The one thing David sought was, “…to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.” What does it really mean to live in the house of the Lord all your days? (Hint: It isn’t about how much time you spend in church.)
• How does studying the truth of God’s Word lead you to beholding the beauty of the Lord?
• Jesus Christ is the Word of God dwelling among us. How does he reveal God’s truth and beauty?
• What does it mean to behold the truth of a beautiful new way… for the world? for your life?
