The Structure of Gratitude
david brooks
Kindness
Expectations
Expectations?
Kindness?
GRATITUDE AWAKENS WITH GOD
• He enters your conflict // “Jesus traveled along the border …” (v. 11)
• He meets you in your condition // “Ten men who had leprosy … stood at a distance …” (v. 12)
• He hears your cries // “Jesus, Master, have pity [mercy] on us.” (v. 13)
GRATITUDE GROWS THROUGH TRUST
• Promise before certainty // “Go show yourselves to the priests.” (v. 14)
• Obedience before evidence // “And as they went …” (v. 14)
GRATITUDE MOVES IN WORSHIP
• Not just the gift but the Giver // “One of them … came back …” (v. 15)
• Not just “thank you” but doxology // “He threw himself at Jesus’ feet …” (v. 16)
GRATITUDE MAKES YOU WHOLE
• More than healing—salvation // “Your faith has made you well.” (v. 19)
• More than manners—grace // “Eucharisto” (v. 16)
“The praise of God stands on its strongest ground when it stand s on nothing.” // gk chesterton
“One cannot be grateful to oneself.” // thomas aquinas
