Just like in the old times!

Wooden houses & SISĂ„LTĂ– cobblestone streets The historical lower part of town by the seaside is one of the most uniform 18th century wooden town sections in Finland. Cobblestones, sandy alleys, sheltered courtyards and bright-coloured facades make you smile. Loviisa has the 1970s town architect Elmar Badermann to thank for preserving the lower town plan, town structure and the valuable old buildings as an intact whole.

The Coastal Loviisa

is the best

The town features fabulous town architecture, an inviting guest harbour and a unique feeling created by historical buildings, blooming gardens and a compact town centre. Pictorial countryside, beautiful archipelago, old Strömfors Iron Works milieu and versatile outdoor life opportunities will optimise your visit. And of course the children will also enjoy themselves in this home town of children’s Jill and Joy (Onneli and Anneli) movies. All this you can find along the E18 highway, less than an hour’s drive from Helsinki and within easy reach from Porvoo, Kotka and Kouvola. SIGHTS

Catch the sights It is wonderful just to wander around in Loviisa, but there are some unique sights you do not want to miss. For example, the beautiful market square and its surroundings, the Kappelinpuisto Park, town museum, old lower town, Suolatori (the ”Salt square”) and the Laivasilta area (with old salt warehouses turned into restaurants and shops). Other points of interest are the Myllyharju and the Kukkukivi tower, a panorama lookout over the sea, the fortresses, the Ehrensvärd hiking route for history and nature lovers, Svartholma Sea Fortress, the medieval Pernaja church and the old Strömfors Iron Works. Allow yourself to be attracted by Loviisa’s most beautiful sights!

Guests, boats & evening sun The Laivasilta area is the pulsing heart of Loviisa in the summer. Restaurants, the guest harbour, shops, the maritime museum, the Jill and Joy playground, the packet yacht Österstjernan, salt warehouses – there is plenty to see in the area. Enjoy your summer days in this relaxed atmosphere.

Regards from Laivasilta and the guest harbour! Great atmosphere and lots of fun pastime for the kids. #whatelsecanyouwishfor #summerfun 4

Loviisa church

Windmill

Kukkukivi tower

The imposing neo-gothic church in the centre of Loviisa was finished in 1865. The red-brick church was designed by the architect G.T. Chiewitz and built in 1862–1865 after the previous wooden church was destroyed in a town fire in 1855. Some artefacts could be rescued from the old church and put on display at the present one, e.g. the old altar piece and crucifix, as well as the clock and the brass crown in the sacristy.

The windmill is a beautiful sight on top of the Myllyharju ridge, about 200 metres from the church. At least six windmills stood on the ridge back in the days of yore. The present restored windmill was brought there in 1926.

From the beautiful Kukkukivi, which represents the romantic nationalism, you can enjoy a panorama view over the Bay of Loviisa. Architect K. Hjelt designed the observation tower in 1906, and it is a testimony of the history of Loviisa as a spa town. The visitors to the spa took walks here to admire the view of the archipelago and breathe in the fresh sea air. The nicely restored cast iron tower Kukkukivi is located on the ridge in the middle of Loviisa, and it is still a very popular place to stop for a moment of rest.

Market Square & Town Hall

Eija’s Garden

Visit Loviisa by boat – is there a better way to spend a beautiful summer day than take a cruise from Helsinki to Loviisa along our scenic southern coast, through the spectacular archipelago!

Most of the stately 19th century stone houses surrounding the town market square have their origins in the office of the architect Georg Chiewitz. The market square milieu remains uniquely intact.

The fortress bastions Ungern and Rosen are grand landmarks of Loviisa town centre. Designed by Augustin Ehrensvärd, the construction of the fortresses to safeguard the eastern border of Sweden was started in 1748. According to the original plan, the whole town would have been surrounded by the fortress, but only a part of the construction was finished. The bastions Ungern and Rosen were almost done, as well as their earthfill embankments. The ruined walls of the bastions have been repaired often over time, and both of them are presently used as recreation areas.

Svartholma Sea Fortress

vaults, history, fun & excitement Svartholma Sea Fortress at the entrance to the Bay of Loviisa is a popular excursion destination for the whole family, reachable by both private boats and scheduled boat services. There are plenty of free berths for boats. Inside the fortress, the island’s colourful history is exhibited. On the island there are two playgrounds and several campfires’ sites. In the summer time you can find a relaxed restaurant in the island, with live music during several weekends. Svartholma is a sister fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki, belonging to the same defence chain of fortresses. The fortification of the island was started in 1748 according to the plans made by Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd. Most of the work was finished during the 1750s. The Swedish command in Svartholma came to an end in 1808, when Svartholma surrendered almost without resistance to Russia. During the Crimean war in 1855 an English squadron blasted the fortress, and the ruins were left as they were.
