Saying, ‘I’m excited!’ doesn’t express my true feelings about this e-magazine. It is truly a spiritual intervention and Founder/Publisher/CEO E. Claudette Freeman is allowing God to use her how, when, where, and anyway He wants to. And she doesn’t ask why. As you read the articles and columns written in Spirit Rising, I can assure you that you will be a well informed and excited reader who will be anxiously waiting for next month’s issue. This month’s theme “God’s Word Is True” was well thought through, and hopefully, will help guide you into all truth and send you running to the Word for more. I want to personally invite you to read all of the articles in this e-mag and don’t fail to let us know your thoughts. Information on how to get a hard copy is available in this issue. Ms. Damal R. Louis’ article asks the question, “Who Am I?” I want you to check it out and see if you can identify yourself or someone you know in it. Our youngest writer, Bridget “Rize” Jones is a student at Howard University in Washington, DC and her article, “I Passed the Test,” not only demonstrates where she is with her peers but it radiates where she is in her walk with the Lord. In addition to the article, Rize blessed us with a poem “His Sound.” It is well written and will show you how “deep” and intellectual she really is. Minister E. Chantaye Watson really hit a homerun with “A Struggler Says, YES?” Read this profoundly written article and discover the truth about “YES.” God’s Word – Truth or Lies? Written by Cheryl E. Knight will confirm that “the Word of the Lord is right and true.” She knows because she is royalty and belongs to the Kingdom of God. Are you for real or faking it? Alvin Romer asks the question, Authenticity and Self-Worth – Is It Still Needed? This article will keep you thinking and searching yourself. And then – “Practicing What Is Preached” by Veronica Bedford doesn’t just make a profound statement, she informs, guides and gives clear directions, on how to reach your spiritual goals. Excited! That’s an understatement. I think Spirit Rising is an awesome e-magazine and you will be more than happy that you are reading it. All the best and keep your Spirit Rising! 6

God’s Word is True "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." John 1:1-5

Practicing What Is Preached By Elder Veronica Bedford

There is truth and power in the Word of God. However, it is of none effect if we are unaware of what is says or if we don’t know how to apply it. As a Christian educator, I never want anyone to be present in any of my sessions (whether preaching or teaching) and leave without having received something that is applicable to their daily lives. Unfortunately, it is not a rare occurrence in our ecclesial settings that one may have their ears tickled and become emotionally enticed and leave with no idea of how to

go about their daily life. As Christians, we are called to live a life that emulates Christ. We are called to be a light in a dark world. However, we often find ourselves lacking the knowledge to be an agent of change for the cause of Christ. This lack of knowledge leaves us powerless. A powerless and uniformed Christian is the antithesis of who we are to be in Christ. In order to live the life God promised we must be in a place of blessed assurance, having an assurance in the word of God and an assurance of who we are in Christ. To gain this assurance we must know the promises of God and the power that lies within. Know the Promises “For in him every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes,’ reads 2nd Corinthians 1:20. “For this reason it is through him that we say ‘Amen’ to the glory of God.” The Apostle Paul makes this statement to the church at Corinth, even as he has experienced incredible suffering and peril. Paul knows what it means to have his life threatened because of his desire to live for Christ. Nonetheless, he has remained confident in God’s Word. The problem many of us face is that we don’t know what the promises are. Therefore, when trouble comes, we are not equipped to handle it. As a matter of fact, when trouble comes we

tend to run away from the Word instead of running to it. We must immerse ourselves in the Word of God through our faith. Faith is essential to this process because, “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) We need to feed on the Word in times of plenty so that there will be a reserve to go in times of famine. The Bible is full of promises from God and about God. For example: Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.” Psalm 34:17 “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.” Isaiah 43:25 “I am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” 2 Corinthians 12:9, “but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness’.” Galatians 6:9 “So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.” James 1:5 “If any of you is lacking in

wisdom, ask God, who gives it to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.”

God allows us to tap into a tremendous power source. The Bible tells us that the “Word became flesh and lived among us” (John 1:14a). JeSo how do we get to know the sus became the living Word of God. promises? Here are a few ways to In John 15:5, Jesus said, “I am the feed on the Word: vine, you are the branches. granted access to the throne of God. What more can one ask than to have heaven on your side, serving as your guide? If we are drained or are experiencing a lack of power, we must ask ourselves if there is a disconnection from the power source. Since Jesus became the living Word and the Holy Spirit lives within us, then we are to be alive too! Just as there is energy in currents that produce power, our lives should be electric. How do we tap into that power? • Praying the Word: God honors the word and it will not return without accomplishing its purpose (Isaiah 55:11) • Praise and Worship: A spiritual weapon that breaks strongholds and destroys the enemy (2 Chronicles 20:13-25) • Speak Life: Remember that life and death lies within the power of the tongue refuse to give negative thoughts place in your mind or in your mouth (Proverbs 18:21) God’s Word is true and waiting for you to access all of its promises and power!

Forum How is God’s Word true? It simply is. While the truth of God’s word is all encompassing and universal, each of us comes into the knowledge and the power of truth differently. For some it may be through learning to be in love with The Almighty. For others it may be learning to rest in His arms in the midst of tragedy. Yet others come to know the truth of God’s word through simply finding self in the mirror of His Word. In the next few pieces, our Contributing Writers introduce you to this fact GOD’S WORD IS TRUE through the personal experiences and observations of the same.

And I was in (passed into a state of) weakness and fear (dread) and great trembling [after I had come] among you. 3

And my language and my message were not set forth in persuasive (enticing and plausible) words of wisdom, but they were in demonstration of the [Holy] Spirit and power [[d]a proof by the Spirit and power of God, operating on me and stirring in the minds of my hearers the most holy emotions and thus persuading them], 4

So that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men (human philosophy), but in the power of God. 5

1 Corinthians 2 Yet when we are among the full-grown (spiritually mature Christians who are ripe in understanding), we do impart a [higher] wisdom (the knowledge of the divine plan previously hidden); but it is indeed not a wisdom of this present age or of this world nor of the leaders and rulers of this age, who are being brought to nothing and are doomed to pass away. 6

AS FOR myself, brethren, when I came to you, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony and evidence or [a]mystery and secret of God [concerning what He has done through Christ for the salvation of men] in lofty words of eloquence or human philosophy and wisdom; 1

For I resolved to know nothing (to be acquainted with nothing, to make a display of the knowledge of nothing, and to be conscious of nothing) among you except Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and Him crucified. 2

12

S P I R I T R I SING

But rather what we are setting forth is a wisdom of God once hidden [from the human understanding] and now revealed to us by God--[that wisdom] which God devised and decreed before the ages for our glorification [to lift us into the glory of His presence]. 7

T:7

None of the rulers of this age or world perceived and recognized and understood this, for if they had, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory. 8

But, on the contrary, as the Scripture says, What eye has not seen and ear has not heard and has not entered into the heart of man, [all that] God has prepared (made and keeps ready) for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, promptly obeying Him and gratefully recognizing the benefits He has bestowed]. 9

Yet to us God has unveiled and revealed them by and through His Spirit, for the [Holy] Spirit searches diligently, exploring and examining everything, even sounding the profound and bottomless things of God [the divine counsels and things hidden and beyond man's scrutiny]. 10

For what person perceives (knows and understands) what passes through a man's thoughts except the man's own spirit within him? Just so no one discerns (comes to know and comprehend) the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 11

Now we have not received the spirit [that belongs to] the world, but the [Holy] Spirit Who is from God, [given to us] that we might realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts [of divine favor and blessing so freely and lavishly] bestowed on us by God. 12

And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the [Holy] Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language [to those who possess the Holy Spirit]. 13

But the natural, nonspiritual man does not accept or welcome or admit into his heart the gifts and teachings and revelations of the Spirit of God, for they are folly (meaningless nonsense) to him; and he is incapable of knowing them [of progressively recognizing, understanding, and becoming better acquainted with them] because they are spiritually discerned and estimated and appreciated. 14

I Passed the Test By Bridget “Rize” Jones

A wise man once said, “The true character of a man is exhibited behind closed doors when no one is looking.” My main concern in the body of Christ is, knowing how to keep God relevant, in everything. If we, as Christians, really understand what Hebrews 11:1 tells us, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” then we will execute faith in the most diverse situations, even when things seem impossible. As a junior attending college out of state for the first time, I’ve had numerous opportunities to exercise my faith on various levels. Imagine taking a full course load without qualifying for work study or financial aid because of your parents’ “financial status”, while their expenditures, more times than less, outweighs their income. Overcoming the financial challenges of college life can sometimes test your faith to the limit; especially, in a recession that forces you to apply for jobs in your spare time, to ease the financial burden of the routine expenses and unforeseeable cost that you never encountered, while living at home. One of the greatest challenges I faced was, learning how to budget and prioritize my responsibilities. For instance, after calculating the expenditures for food, clothing, personal items, laundry and travel, there is not much left for anything else. This added pressure can be overwhelming for a young person, attending college away from home, who barely has enough money for social activities and entertainment. I relocated from Miami to Washington, DC, to attend Howard University. The drastic climate change I experienced was another devastating shock, both physically and psychologically. As a native Floridian, I enjoy the hot summers and mild winter seasons; but, living in Washington, DC this past winter, in the brutally frigid weather compounded with record snow storms and blizzards that blanketed the area, was downright traumatic. 14

S P I R I T R I SING

That was a lot more than I bargained for, but nevertheless, I survived it. These conditions, coupled with living away from home for the first time could have been very depressing, or in my case a test of my faith. Rather than succumbing to defeat and giving up, I chose to face my fears and trust God, because I know that His grace is sufficient to overshadow any obstacle I encounter. During those rare moments of despair, God reminded me that He “will supply all of my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” He became more real to me then, than ever before. I am eternally grateful that “God is a not a man that He should lie.” He stands by His word to perform it. God’s grace is unmerited favor. My relationship with Him has been enhanced by His grace in my life. I recognize that He has given each of us a special grace to overcome the challenges in life. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Because of His grace I have the victory in every situation. And, I know that I am more than a conqueror, because God fights and wins every battle for me. The world encourages us to be independent, but God teaches us to be dependent on Him. Dependence on God is a way of life for me. God wants all of us to have abundant life. He is the only one who can fill the void that pierces your heart. He will meet you wherever you are. You must admit that you are a sinner; repent of your sins, and God will forgive and cleanse you of all unrighteousness. Just confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead; and you will be saved for ever. He loves you more than you can ever imagine. Heaven or hell – it’s your choice. Who Am I? By D. R. Louis

Who am I? I am a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, an aunt, a friend, a teacher, an artist, a lover of people, a singer, a photographer, a song writer, a business owner, an interior decorator, a playwright, but most importantly and the foundation of it all…a child of the most high God! But I was not always this way. As a child I struggled with poor self image. I wanted to be accepted but could never fit in. I sought for ways to please certain people in my life and when that didn’t work, my self-esteem would decrease. At the age of about nine, something happened to me. I began to get these strange overwhelming feelings that rushed over me at the most inopportune times. I would be at school getting ready for gym or something and would have a thought and up would come all of these emotions. I could literally feel “something” come over me. I started to write and oh what an outlet this was. I began to create beautiful pieces of works that would just lift off of the page. I had found my escape. I still didn’t “like me” but writing helped me deal with everything. I had thought about suicide but the question would come to me, who would write? Would I let the poems, songs, and stories go unheard? It was around this same time that I was invited to go to church with a neighbor. We were in service and just as the choir began the first song those emo-

tions came over me, again. I looked around, through teary eyes, at the other children my age laughing and playing in church and here I was weeping while listening to a worship song. I thought to myself, I’m weird enough! I don’t need this too. I tried to leave unnoticed but the neighbor saw my tear stained cheeks and came after me. As I stood in the restroom stall, I shook my head in disbelief. My neighbor tried to reassure me from the other side of the door that what just happened to me was perfectly normal. She told me that that was the Spirit of God touching my heart. I told her I was okay and she said she would see me back in service. Needless to say, I didn’t return until I knew for sure they had finished singing. Fast forward to high school - I went to a specialized school for nursing…just like my Mom! After my first year of college I decided that nursing wasn’t what I wanted to do. Of course, this was upsetting to some. I was told in the nicest words they had that dropping out of nursing school was a dumb thing to do. My response was, okay I’ll be dumb to you but happy. I met the man that I married, shortly afterwards. We have been married for 16 years and have four beautiful children, together.

I said all of that to say this. If I would have lisSPIRIT RI S I NG

tened to the derogatory names I was called as a child, I wouldn’t be comfortable in my own skin…all 230 lbs. If I would have listened to the naysayers who thought the love of my life and I wouldn’t make it, I wouldn’t still be married, today. If I would have listened to the doctor’s saying “No,” to the possibility of our having a child, I wouldn’t have any children, today. If I would have listened to the thoughts in my own head…I wouldn’t be here writing these words, today. Now my question to you is who are you? Are you allowing who other people say you are, be who you are? Are you letting the limitations from others limit you? If you are not who you are, where you are suppose to be, doing what you were created to do…are you being you? And if you are not being you, who are you? I challenge you to take what was hurtfully done to you and use it as the rudder to set you on course. Take whatever was said to you negatively and use it to fuel your vehicle toward success. Take every challenge, obstacle, and pain from you past and allow God to propel you to your future! I am currently working on my first solo project, the stage play, “WRECKED BUT NOT TOTALED”, which premiered June 25th-27th at the Waxahachie Civic Center. This is a personal testament of what God can do with a mess…He can make you a messenger. Damal R. Louis is a Writer/Producer/Director who found her love for writing at the age of 9. She has written poetry, songs, children’s books and now stage plays. She has worked on several other productions throughout her career. She is also a wife and mothers. Authenticity and Self-Worth

Is it Still Needed? By Alvin Romer

How can one be natural and innocent without blemish to imbue integrity and righteousness? In our quest to be law-abiding citizens and knowing that a sense of integrity is part of what we should be doing for right, our spiritual walk don’t always balance out to the former or the latter. We are creatures of habit, set in our ways and not easily prone to embrace change. I would hasten to say that we are not all real -- even to ourselves, knowing that we could do better. Being real in my opinion is not easily something that is inherent and innate. Moreover, one of the most important interpersonal and universal skills is the ability to reach down deep and realize that to be authentic would be the very fabric that weaves integrity into garments we all should wear. Have you established strongholds to fathom the reality of God’s Word? One of the most important interpersonal skills is the ability to be authentic and posit a sense of righteousness. Authenticity is simply defined as — ‘the quality or condition of being authentic or genuine.’ That

seem like such an easy entity to abide by, and it’s so easy to assume that we could change at a moment’s notice, but it’s all about longevity and how willing any aspect of ‘realness’ is allowed to surface. I’m aware that people just don’t have the wherewithal to be open and honest, especially if and when there’s a gain or an opportunity to advance a cause. It’s my assessment in cases like this that in order to have healthy, productive and legitimate interactions of worth, individuals must learn how to reach within themselves and be accountable for their actions for authenticity in embracing God’s Word. The inspirational and spiritual aspect is part of the process, and it all starts with self-awareness and the image you’d want to portray and live by. I constantly ask men how much do they want to be accountable for...and would they be willing to admit that change is inevitable and needed by them, to do well by their women and for family and community to be the progenitors of (their) good behavior. I also ask them to ask themselves -- “Who am I?” ”How can I be the best that I can be?” ”Am I just a caricature of my true self, and only putting up a front at the risk of losing out?” Any of these types of questions will help individuals begin to be gut level honest with them to determine self-worth and who they really are. Until we truly know who we are and become comfortable with whom we are - will we be able to live a clean and sinfree life knowing that God is first and foremost. I’m SPIRIT RI S I NG

not unscathed from this malady...and I’ve not always toed the line or walked in the footsteps of righteousness. I’ve had my problems. But along the way to the altar, God got my attention and made me suffer a bit. He broke me up and put me on my back. While on my back I was in no position for comfort -- I had no choice but to look up. You see, the key is knowing that you can be broken to be made whole again, but to stay on track you need to be real! The lack of authenticity does not only affect our daily routines as we go about our business, but it blends over into our metabolisms and mannerisms. Lying, cheating and being less than honest, at the expense of getting over on someone for some ill-gotten gain, is not the way for authenticity to define good works. Being ourselves and developing good character traits should start from the earliest point in our growth patterns and continue up until we know right from wrong. The regiment for change should be par for the course, if you know that there are problems with your walk. The lack of authenticity

boils down to insecurity and lack of self-esteem. I had to learn to be myself, find my own voice and develop real habits to be convinced that God’s Word is true. In closing, the ability to stand up and be tall, the realness of a good self-image can be the catalyst for change to define all that you should be. Make daily steps toward finding spiritual worth and a reservoir for inspiration. Your authentic self is who you are, and when you have no fear of judgment, or when faith allows you to make elections and callings surest, your walk will justify the change in you. You will be emboldened with a plan of action to study the Word of God. Before the world starts pushing you around and telling you who you’re supposed to be, emerge strong and confident as you are endowed to give yourself permission to be your authentic self.

I’ve struggled with so many things in my life. I’ve struggled to stay sane, I’ve struggled to remain happy when the truth was - I was sad inside. I’ve struggled with loving those that didn’t love me. I’ve struggled with eating. I’ve struggled with habits. I’ve struggled with life. You name it, I’ve struggled with it. I’ve struggled with me. The “me” that always felt the tugging of God but thought He had tugged on the wrong one. He couldn’t possibly have wanted me? I used to wake up each morning wondering what kind of struggle that day would bring and would I be able to live through it. Just when I thought I had victory over a struggle, another one would show up… One day the biggest struggle of my life knocked on my door. I contemplated whether or not to answer because truth was; I just wasn’t up for another struggle. But hesitantly I asked who is it? The answer was “YES”. YES? YES. As I stood there trying to weigh the consequences of this struggle, I searched the word of God and I cried SPIRIT RI S I NG

out to the only one who’d been a constant in my life. Lord, how can I say yes? I was traumatized from so many years of horrible things spoken over my life. Suffering rejection from family and friends who just didn’t see me like God saw me. After all, I was still trying to recuperate from so many wrong decisions made in my life. And wasn’t I still making them? There were only a few good decisions I was proud of like choosing to be with my husband, giving birth to the substance of my life: my two sons and giving my life to Christ. I thought that walking down to the front and releasing my life into His hands was all I had to do other than try to live according to His word. Then I remembered reading in God’s word about Jeremiah. Like me, when “Yes” showed up at Jeremiah’s door, he found reasons why he didn’t want to answer. One of them was that he felt he couldn’t speak because he was young. But God had plans for Jeremiah, God has plans for me and He certainly has plans for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” YES showed up at my door. Sent there by God because He has plans for my life and because there is something more that He has in store for me to do. There I was again, now struggling with what would happen to me if I succumbed to the YES. I wasn’t crazy enough to believe that accepting this YES would mean that my struggles would be over. No, actually, I knew that taking on this YES would mean that all hell would break loose. It meant giving up some things. It meant coming out of my comfort zone. It meant choosing. My first choice was between two loves. God, who I love and my husband, who I loved, too. But why was there such a struggle between the two? Unlike God, my husband didn’t see what God saw in me. He didn’t know the change that had taken place deep within me. Changes that hadn’t all surfaced to the outside. Changes that began the day I found myself staring face-to-face at death in the Intensive Care Unit. After all, my husband had known the old me for so long he hadn’t noticed some of the “inside things” seeping out more and more, each day. I remember reading a passage in Matthew 13:57 about how Jesus says that a prophet does not have honor in his own home, but not until I was faced with the same situation, did I realize that God’s word is definitely true. God warns His people of things so that nothing should be a surprise. That’s why it’s so important to stay connected with the word. It is a source of life. Through His word, God dispels my struggles. I mean, why do I struggle? God has already won the fight. A struggle is like pulling hard on the rope that God already has in his possession. So what are you pulling for? Why do we struggle when obviously there is no need to fight? The battle has already been won! Although the struggle took but a moment, it seemed like days. I made my choice. I let YES in. I choose God. And just like I knew, when I let YES in, some things had to go in my life. Just what are those things? Only God knows, but not only did I choose God, I choose to really leave my life up to Him. I trust what He is going to do with my life. I trust His word. His word is true. He says that He has the plan and not I myself. I don’t need to fight in this battle that’s called “my life”…all I need to do is just show up! It was a struggle but I said yes!

THE PRINCIPLE OF SONSHIP YOU ARE ALREADY GOOD ENOUGH

For the Truth of God’s Word By Vernita C. Williams

Do you see yourself as a servant of God or as a son of God? There is a difference. The difference and the significance of it is something most of us never consider. It is an absolutely wonderful thing to classify yourself as a servant of God. It is far more excellent, however, to be a son (or daughter) of The Most High. Why? Because a son usually has privileges and a servant does not. In fact, more often than not, the son has privileges that a servant will never have. So, where do you stand? When it comes to walking in your God-given authority - are you a suffering servant or a privileged son? A privileged son will also understand that the Word of God is absolutely true and the truth of it must and manifest in his life. The Apostle Paul addressed this same question when he noticed that there were believers who were in bondage to the “trying to measure up” Mindset. They struggled and failed repeatedly, and never seemed to be good enough to satisfy the traditional biblical laws set by Moses. In order to change the mindset of believers who inwardly considered themselves second class servants who were never able to fulfill the Law, Paul delivered this powerful, life changing truth:

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Galatians 4:7 The Vernita Williams translation of that passage simply says: If you accept, recite and believe that your only measure is to be a servant as opposed to a son that serves, you will never achieve more than the portion of a suffering servant. The Word of God though says as a son, you are a joint heir entitled to all things Christ is entitled to. There is another passage in the Word of God confirming that the insight and privileges of a servant are in fact restricted. When a relationship with God becomes intimate through fellowship and obedience, God extends the privileges and revelations of sonship. God literally makes known to you things that He does not share with those who are not sons. You become partakers of wonderfully divine and powerful family secrets.

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth,I call you not servant; for a servant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. John 15:14-15 As a son and friend of God you must approach life knowing that all of the blessings, the promises and the words of God are yours. If you have the audacity to believe that you can live abundantly each and every day of your life – then guess what - abundance will be yours. It is up to you to receive the mindset of the son and therefore receive all that the son is promised in the Word of God. Stop struggling to measure up. You are already a son. You are a son of the Most High God. Learn to exercise and live under the rights and privileges you have been assured of in God’s Word as a son of God. When you do abundance will sit comfortably with you in your favorite chair.

Rev. Vernita C. Williams, is the Pastor of Stewardship, at New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International in Miami, Fl. The PRINCIPLE OF SONSHIP is an excerpt from her forthcoming book from Pecan Tree Publishing, PRINCIPLES OF ABUNDANCE. An attorney specializing in wills, trusts and estate planning, she is a highly sought after speaker on estate planning and Biblical stewardship.

JOURNALING

God’s Word Truth or by Cheryl E. Knight

What's that noise? It can't be my child I hear. It's 11:30 pm. She should be sleeping and getting her rest for school tomorrow. Also, there were strict instructions given: no more sweets tonight. No one is in sight. The kitchen is empty except for the broken glass and cookies covering the white tiled floor. Now, I'm really upset. "Were you in the kitchen?" "No." "Were you getting cookies when I told you not to?" "No." Obviously, there is something missing from this dialogue: the truth. When you are thinking about truth or lies, the source of the information must be considered. Children, when seeking refuge from punishment from their parents or teachers, will sometimes tell a lie. Adults, when trying not to be caught in a mess in marriages, relationships or at work, will sometimes tell a lie. Not a big one, only a little white lie. Right? What about God? Does His back get up against the wall? Does He tell lies? In answering these questions regarding truth, let's take a look at God's nature and God's word. God always tells the truth. "God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” [Numbers 23:19(NIV)] This is 26

Lies?

difficult to comprehend because of your experiences in your homes, schools, organizations and workplaces. You can think of several instances, throughout your life span, where promises were given but actions were the direct opposite. It is disappointing to realize that your spouse doesn't love you like they proclaimed or that your best friend has betrayed you by spreading a rumor. What is even more disheartening is when you realize that you have been lying to yourself about your strengths, weaknesses, motives and God's purpose for your life. After encountering untruthfulness often enough, it becomes difficult to believe that God is truthful and has the utmost integrity. One of the ways that God speaks to you is through His Word - the Bible. The Bible is comprised of 66 books which contain chapters. Each chapter consists of sentences which are referred to as scriptures. Scriptures were written by men but were inspired by God who always tells the truth. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” [2 Timothy 3:16 and 17 (NIV)] Throughout history, there has been debate among some regarding the authenticity of the Bible and whether is it still relevant to your life today. This way of thinking is not surprising since God's word often challenges every aspect of your life

including your thoughts, money, attitude and relationships. It would be easier to discount the Bible so that you can live your life your way without directions from God. Wouldn't it? Actually, your life is more difficult when you ignore God's Word. His guidance is for your protection and for you to experience the best life that He has to offer. "For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.” [Psalm 33:4(NIV)] Exploring God’s Truth and Your Truth. Grab your journal and let’s expound on – TRUTH. In what areas of your life are you untruthful? These are the areas that you like to avoid because dealing with them usually causes discomfort and pain. WRITE 1: Make a commitment to operate in the truth as governed by God's Word. Write your commitment out so that you can review it regularly. WRITE 2: Identify scriptures which will assist you in the areas identified; recite the scriptures out loud daily.

Scripture References The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Psalm 19:7-11(NIV) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes. Because I love your commands more than gold, more than pure gold, and because I consider all your precepts right, I hate every wrong path. Psalm 119:105, 125,127-128 (NIV) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8(NIV) Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Mark 13:31(NIV)

WRITE 3: Keep a written log of your thoughts and progress, and ask God to help as you move forward in your journey of a truth filled life. WRITE 4: Identify a trustworthy friend or accountability partner to help you.

God’s Word Is True This issue we have explored the fact that God’s Word is true. Can you identify at least three specific areas in your life where you learned, acknowledged or witnessed this fact? There are some who argue that there is no power in the actual words written by the historians and profits of God, but the power comes solely from the energy that the Christian exerts in believing and affirming. What are your thoughts on this belief? In her journaling column, Cheryl Knight challenges us to take a look at the fact that we are not always truthful in dealing with self. Have there been times when you chose not to deal with the truth of God’s Word because it was too difficult or went against what you “wanted” to do or hear? Chantaye Watson talks about acknowledging a specific word from God for her life and in service to God and how that word from God was going to make a difficult situation even tougher. Have you ever considered that living according to God’s Word may present challenges in your life that seem challenging? If yes, how have or how would you handle those challenges? If no, what do believe the impact of God’s true word in your life is? Both Elder Bedford and Cheryl Knight encourage us to know the Word and know the promises of God. Can you identify at least one promise of God for the so-called seven main life areas: health/ wellness, finance, family, relationships, spirit, career/job, church? You may meet someone tomorrow who does not believe God’s Word is true, what words can you offer in love to plant the seed that it actually is? SPIRIT RI S I NG
