Phuket Island The island has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world...

huket Province: Located approximately 862 kilometers south of Bangkok is Phuket, Thailand's largest island, which is often dubbed as the pearl of the Andaman, or the pearl of the south. Its natural resources-rocky peninsular, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it the South's wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island and province.

Phuket borders on Phang-nga Province to the north. The other 3 sides are encircled by the Andaman Sea the place where many of the best diving sites are located. The island is connected to Phang-nga Province

by Sarasin Bridge and Thep Krasattri Bridge.

Staying on the island is easy, as there are only two seasons in a year - the rainy season (May to October) and the hot

season (November to April). The low season of phuket is between September and October as they are the wettest months.

The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breeze and marvel at the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches.

Average temperatures ranges between 23 C and 33 C. 19

History of Phuket Most geologists believe that the area known as Phuket today was once a cape that extended into the Andaman Sea. Geographical formations gradually changed the capes location, finally detaching it from the mainland.

A famous Greek philosopher, Claudius Ptolemy, was the first person who mentioned the cape in his book written in the year 157.

The cape was locally referred to as Jung Ceylon, which was located between latitudes 6 N and 8 N (the present site of Phuket Island). Natives called the place Cha Lang, which evolved to Tha Lang the name of the main town to the north of the island.

As a perfect stopover sheltering traders from monsoons, Jung Ceylon welcomed merchants from India, Persia, 20

Arabia, Burma, China and also Siam.

During the 16th century, the island was also a popular trading port for tin with Portuguese, Dutch, English and French traders flocking to the island. This contributed to making the development of mining so unprecedented.

Chinese businessmen and miners later migrated to Phuket and soon enjoyed thriving business wealth.  Apart from serving as a meeting point for traders from Europe, Central Asia and China, Phuket also attracted ambitious immigrants, especially those from Portugal and China, to work in the tin mines. With its colorfulhistory, visitors admire the SinoPortuguese style architecture in the city especially those buildings located along the Thalang and Yaowarat Roads.

In 1894, Phuket was promoted to be a Monthon administrative unit under the supervision of the central administrative body (located in Bangkok).

In 1902, Phraya Ratsada Korsimbi, a Sino-Thai businessman who contributed to developing the modern city of Phuket was appointed Governor of Phuket. He also helped to improve the welfare of local residents and set up the market system in the countryside. In 1916, Phuket became a province.

The tin mining industry has gradually failed to generate economic growth in Phuket, especially after 1985 when the

price of tin fell by half. However, with its natural resources, Phuket later emerged as a tourist destination with great potential.

This polished pearl of the Andaman is truly a destination that provides visitors with memorable experiences.

The islands long history has shaped the distinctive Phuket of the present with its diverse ethnic groups, culture, architectural influence, and fine cuisine. With approximately 35 percent of the population being comprised of Thai-Muslims, it is possible to see an equal number of Wats (Thai temples) located next to Mosques.

oh yao is comprised of Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, located on southeast area of Phuket. You can reach there from Krabi, Phang Nga and Phuket by ferry, travelling time around 30 minutes from all three directions. Though Koh Yao located on the south of Thailand and 90 percent of population there are Muslim, the whole of Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi is totally safe because it located out of the risk area of conflict and received many eco-tourism awards, both national and international. Moreover, it’s full of five-star hotels, convenient stores and many facilities. A good thing is that the locals could live with these changes peacefully and keep the simple way of life as they have used to be at the same time.

Roaming Koh Yao in backpacker style Sometimes on your holiday, you need not to have activity or convenience of everything. For someone, resting is to stop all activities, forget everything and just stay with oneself, change environment from routine life, freeze one’s time in a beautiful and quiet place for a while, that’s enough, and Koh Yao can give you these things.

Even though Koh Yao located near another tourist attractions such as Phuket, Phi Phi Islands and Krabi, the feeling when you touched Koh yao will be completely different from those places. There is no music from beer bars, only blowing breeze and the sound of wave, no people moving around, only you and a line of trees near the beach and just a good book is enough to make you feel not lonely.

If you are a traveler who love simple life, like sunbathing, reading a book, lying down and listen to music, a bit adventurous, when reached the destination you like to stay still, not emphasized on activities, you should begin your little adventure by travelling from Phuket to Bang Rong pier, taking a Phuket24

Bang Rong bus from Fountain Circle in front of Municipal Market to Bang Rong pier (the trip takes 60 minutes and the last bus leaves Phuket at 1.30 pm.). Ferry service is all day, stop at Koh Yao Yai first and end at Koh Yao Noi (travelling time around 60 minutes).

I introduce choosing bungalow for staying and should be reserved in advance because there are not many quarters on the Island, price between 350-1,000 baht. At Koh Yao Noi, most of bungalows are on the eastern beach, far from community area around 7-8 kilometers. At Koh Yao Yai, the bungalows scatter in Lohjak pier area and Ao Thiu Son. You can rent a motorcycle or a mountain bike for travelling within the Island, price 200-300 baht/day. If you plan to stay several days and not too economical, you should rent a boat for cruising Phang Nga bay sea, Koh Panyee and stop over at Koh Hong for playing and swimming, rent a boat or a car as you wish, you can ask someone at your bungalow’s service counter all the time.

Service price on this Island is almost the same standard, you can be at ease.

Visit the real core of Koh Yao The highlight of this heaven Islands is the more-than-simple charm. For those who want to touch and learn the sufficiency philosophy which makes Thai people smile easily and smile all the time, I can tell that you are suitable for homestay package that will allow you to touch the virgin of Koh Yao very closely. The homestay packages for choosing are 2 days and 1 night, 3 days and 2 nights and longer if you want.

Homestay tourism is to stay with the local family in their house, eat with them and try to earn a living in their style. Everything is more than Reality Show, no distortion, but no unbearable hardship neither (Homestays here are certified by Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thai government and received

World Legacy Award for Ecotourism and Culture from National Geographic magazine, United States of America, in 2002 ). The most interesting activity would be the local way of life, crab catching, shrimp catching and fishing in the way of local wisdom which sometimes make us tongue-tied and surprise by their uppermost technique.

Isle of paradise Coral Island, known locally as Koh Hae, is a beautiful getaway destination located nine kilometers southeast of Phuket. The island features two main beaches, Long Beach and Banana Beach (small beach). Coral Island has no public energy such as electricity and water. The electricity and water have to be gain from electric generator and drills respectively.

Coral island lives up to its name with a reef only a few meters from the beach. Guides provide instruction and show you the best spots around this shallow reef. Before crossing roads, look left and right

Road ways in Phuket and other cities in Thailand could be One-way or Two-way Traffics. I, myself, as a Thai person, am still confused and often being close to be hit by a car. So, be cautious, look both left and right side of the roads before making decision to cross them. Especially, there’re always bicycles or motorbikes using the wrong side of the roads. Again, be CERTAIN before crossing the roads.

Be extra careful when you do the driving, yourselves

The hilly Phuket roads lead to the beaches have a lot of curves, turns and ups and downs hill, so, please be extra careful when you drive. It could be very slippery when it rains. On the way to Patong beach, when you reach the top of the hill, do not be frightened and prepare for a lot of noise from the “HORN TOOTS”!!!!! It a common practice of the LOCALS to pay highly respect for the sacred spirit who protect the hill.

Ask First before Using Services

Phuket is famous as one of the most sincere town, but problems of unfair charges could happen with both tourists from overseas and tourists from Thailand, with the fact that every community comprises of GOOD GUYS and BAD GUYS. So, please ask for the CHARGES before using services, study from travellers’ guides, booklets and information magazines. If you are encouraged to use the services before talking about the prices, just refuse to use those services.

Don’t be late

Lives are so easy here. People are so relax, they don’t care much about the TIME. Especially, if you have to use the local bus service to the airport, you should spare at least one hour to you original plan. Waiting at the airport is far safer. But TAXI services are not too bad.

Practice SAVE SEX

On the paradise island, anything can happen. Some parties are letting go the spirits. Tourists here come from all walks of lives; when they get together, let their spirits go- how can you know that those spirits are pure without HIV? So, to be save, do carry with you some condoms, no matter, you are male or female.

Don’t gat Tummy Aching

Thai food is famous worldwide. Thai restaurants in your country could tone down the spiciness to suit your tongue. But, Thai restaurants in Thailand often increase the spiciness as much as three times or much stronger than your experiences. Especially, the local southern style Thai food is known as the spiciest in Thailand. Learn to say “MAI-PED” (not too spicy) or “PED-NOI-NOI” (cut the spicy out). One other fact is Thailand is a tropical country which is suitable for the growth of germs, you should eat only well cooked food.

Be Pretty but Do Not Be Too Sexy

Modern BACK PACKERS are so confident and are able to travel everywhere alone. Please be careful, not to be too sexy in isolated places, do not be naked in public beaches, avoid being in the “not well lid” area or isolated area at night and do not receive any drinks or foods from strangers.

Swim Safely and Do Not Drown

When travel by boats, please always ware life jackets. Avoid travelling in the sea when it rains heavily or in the storm. (Monsoon season in Thailand is the period during May to November).

Please look for areas along the beaches between RED FLAGS; they indicate unsafe areas to swim.

Be cautious before renting Cars, Motor Bikes or Scooters

Before renting CARS, MOTOR BKIES or SCOOTERS, please check around vehicles together with owners to see scratches or dent marks. Take photographs of the vehicles, choose mode to record date and time. The process can help preventing any post renting arguments.

Natural Disaster Awareness

A lot of people are still scare and frightened by the Tsunami. Please do not let that incident destroys your enjoyment of the trip, you simply notice signs telling route to get away, available in your accommodation and along the beach areas.

Alarm systems are already installed in the areas. Be remembered that before Tsunami happens, the water in the sea will be unusually reduced, then you must be rush away to high grounds. If there is storm or heavy rain, you should protect yourself in a strong building, avoid being on the hills because you might face a land slide. If there is an earthquake, avoid being near buildings.
