THE STORY OF PHUKET Besides from high-rise buildings and the well being of metropolis’ lifestyle, Phuket’s charisma is at the buildings and structures themselves that mostly still maintain the antique European style of architecture. This manner is inﬂuenced by the period of colonialism, especially from Portuguese style complementing with Chinese and Thai crafting so is called Sino-Portuguese architecture. The structures stand for almost a hundred years now, since the beginning of mining operations period. The buildings with this style are for examples, currently sited for City Hall, Provincial Court, and Siam City Bank Public Company Limited. Moreover, there are commercial buildings and stores those are inﬂuenced by Chinese architectural style as well. Those building would generally have narrower front but deeper in width and not so high, which are accessible for sightseeing along Thalang Road, Tin Road, Phangnga Road, Yaowarat Road, and Krabi Road.

CUISINES Apart from traditional Sino-Portuguese structures, another highlight of Phuket is the cuisine such as the spicy Hokkienstyled Seafood, original southern Thai food that ﬁlls with herbs and spices. A world class restaurant serving traditional Muslim cuisine is a place shouldn’t miss, so called Blue Elephant. The restaurant is modiﬁed from an old mansion of Thalang town’s baron.

ACCOMMODATIONS Accommodations in the city are not as many in amount but in diversity, including guesthouses of ﬁve stars hotels or of budget hotels. An interesting option would be a slight scaled boutique hotels and guesthouses that are altered from Sino-Portuguese style Shop House spreading within Phuket city. There is also an antique On-On Motel that backpackers yearn to visit because of where the scenes in movie The Beach were ﬁlmed.

ACTIVITIES The most joyful activity is sightseeing of architectural structures in the city along with tasting local meals and chatting with friendly Phuket locals. For visitors who prefer to spend time reading in a park, there is a park by the sea around Stone Bridge (Hin Bridge) in Phuket downtown, and Khao Rung park on the hill is a very pleasant sightseeing spot of the town as well.

NIGHT LIFE It may seem that Phuket locals are in bed early but that doesn’t mean the nightlife of this city would be sleeping too. There are small pubs and restaurants, modiﬁed from many classic Shop Houses on Yaowarat Road and Rommanee Side Street, and many other entertaining places scattering within the city that gifted skillful live bands take turns to perform. Timber Hut is another long lasting favorite pub for a night out.

ORIGINAL SIMPLICITY OF PHUKET STYLE For 11 kilometers away from the city, you will find a main conjunction that leads tourists to beaches. If turn left and continues driving for 1 kilometer, you would find Chalong Bay and only a bit more straight ahead there would be Rawai Beach. Then turn right and drive along the coastline then you would find Phromthep cape, where is end of far west of Thailand, between that there are small calming beaches such as Yanui Beach and extend to Nai Harn Beach. The white sand contrast with indigo blue sea is the unique attraction plus the Lagoon that exists since prosperous old mines era. Seashores in these areas soothe for easy going lifestyle, not too many luxurious accommodation and some beaches only supply tourist with Bungalow. It is very likely to call this beach as a yippie beach or an educational beach of local mariner living lifestyles. CHALONG BAY There is long wooden port stretches out into the bay, with curved seashore that you could view coconut trees in line and extend into the sea. This area of the sea is not fit for swimming because of the mud shore. Chalong Bay is an excellent start point for a day trip, renting a boat to visit other islands nearby, or fishing. However, only a few hotels are in service. The highlight of this place is mostly for sightseeing and delicious seafood where many famous restaurants are located here at Chalong Bay.

RAWAI BEACH Next to Chalong Bay for about 6 kilometers, travel by main route 4024 which is one of the most beautiful route in Phuket, will find Rawai Beach. Rawai Beach has a white sandy beach and you can enjoy swimming here because the shore is shallow and waves are not too strong. Accommodation and seafood restaurant are serviced along the beach, or local fishermen can also provide you with heaps of fresh seafood that may be purchased and you can have a little Barbeque party of your own. NAIHARN BEACH From Rawai Beach, turn right and passes Phromthep cape to travel up north, you will find Nai Harn beach with clean white sand. At the other side back of the beach, there is lagoon as called by locals as Nong Harn (Harn pond). Between the sea and the pond is where Nai Harn beach is sited. During monsoon season in May to October, waves are strong and swimming is not recommended as it could be very dangerous. At Nai Harn Beach, there are pleasant hotels in service including restaurants and souvenir shops. This beach is truly suits visitors who wish to spend quality timewith the sea.
