DESIGNER SPACES
“Everybody has a talent within themselves,” said Carolyn. “They just have to find it, and I was lucky —it found me.” Within its expansive interior stretching more than 6,000-square feet, the North Shore home is filled with both subtle and eye-catching details. Architecturally exquisite custom-designed moldings exude timeless elegance while luxuriously soft window treatments inventively allow for light yet ensure privacy. These design touches — and so many others throughout this 24-room, 8-bath mansion — are the handiwork of Carolyn Miller. She is the owner of the eponymous Dix Hills interior design firm that has long imbued residential properties on Long Island, in the city and in Florida with mesmerizing luxury, creativity and pizzazz. In this particular manse, an extraordinary spectrum of plush fabrics, sleek finishes and eclectic furnishings harmoniously combine to create a transitional design scheme. Textured furnishings, fixtures and floor coverings run the gamut and include Jerusalem stone tiles, a window treatment enriched with the patina and softness of wedding-dress satin, an area rug made of black cowhide, mirrored end-tables with oak trim, steel and crystal lamps and a delicate lace throw. From room to room, the tactile is as stunning as the visual. While personally favoring the clean lines and minimalism that characterize modern design, Carolyn takes her interior decorating cues from her clients and then works to fashion spaces that satisfy their aesthetic sensibility to the nth degree. Her fixation also extends to ensuring clients feel at home in their custom-created living spaces — a goal that drives her to specify, for example, dirt-concealing fabrics and finishes in rooms where families are likely to snack or the kids and their friends hang out. In the North Shore home, modular seating, upholstered in rich royal purple velvet, and a zebra ottoman take center stage in a space that does double duty as a playroom and children’s office. The kids not only watch TV with friends there but do their homework on built-in desks at each end of the room. “I always say, ‘It’s important for you to know that the home I do for you is your home. I love my home, and I want you to love yours,’” said Carolyn, a Brooklyn native who grew up on the South Shore and currently has homes in Dix Hills and Boca Raton. Married to a dentist, she is the mother of three grown sons. Her modus operandi and personality are as straightforward, welcoming and genuine as the interiors she artfully creates. They are the reasons clients not only become repeat customers but also recommend Carolyn to their parents, adult children and friends. At any given time, Carolyn is adeptly juggling seven to 20 projects, although they can range from a two-bedroom assignment to an entire house, and each can be in a different phase of development or completion. But

LUXURY WITH A SPLASH OF DRAMA what pervades all her projects is a sense of luxury with a splash of drama. Anything Carolyn spots in a store, a showroom or a magazine can potentially set her creative juices in motion. “I’ve started with a blue vase and created everything off that,” she said. At the outset, Carolyn secures a sense of her clients’ design preferences by asking them to provide her with pictures of any fabric, furniture or colors that strike their fancy — be it in a magazine or on a website. She initiated the exercise after a client professed to love traditional but turned her thumbs down on each and every traditional item that Carolyn showed her. Instead, the client expressed interest in modern furnishings that caught her eye while on shopping trips with Carolyn. Once Carolyn has a feel for clients’ tastes, she provides them with two to three design concepts that include fabrics and color schemes. Carolyn welcomes homeowners on her journeys to find the right furnishings, fabrics and accessories for their homes. “I try to make the decorating and design trip a meeting of the minds and to bring a comfort level to it,” she said. While some clients relish the learning experience the trips provide and the sense of accomplishment that follows when the project is completed, others decide, after one or two treks, to leave the legwork to Carolyn. To accommodate their wishes — and minimize the overwhelming nature of the design process -- she provides samples, pictures and, if available, pieces on loan for clients’ approval. The culmination of Carolyn’s labors is her signature oneday installation, which brings together all the furnishings and accessories to complete the project. On that day, clients leave their homes early in the morning and return about 12 hours later — during which time Carolyn goes the distance to finish and finesse their residence, including waiting for deliveries of all warehoused purchases, directing the placement of furniture and carpeting, as well as the installation of window treatments, lighting fixtures, area rugs and framed pictures. She also arranges accessories and art work, positioning each object just-so on kitchen islands, fireplace mantels, tables and walls, and flicks on sconces and reduces overhead lighting for an ambient touch. The net result: clients — upon entering their homes — experience the ultimate “wow” moment. Carolyn’s intuitive creativity and sense of style inform her work. In fact, it was as a newly-minted Roslyn homeowner many years ago that Carolyn, with no budget to hire a decorator, followed her own instincts and turned her home’s empty spaces into rooms that became not only a showcase for her innate talent but the envy of her neighbors. “Within a year, I had four clients,” Carolyn recalled. Her first project, a basement den, was a matter of doing what she had done in her own house: creating built-in platforms and covering the entire area — including the platforms — with carpeting.
“Everybody has a talent within themselves,” said Carolyn.

around $1300 to have your car shipped to southern Florida from Long Island. Shipping to California runs about $2000. When researching a company to ship your Bentley or Porsche, ask whether the transport vehicles offer enclosed sections of differing heights. “Some companies use a curtain-side vehicle but a hardside carrier protects your vehicle,” says Mr. Pliaconis. A family-owned business since 1982, Plycar ships tens of thousands of exotic and luxury automobiles every year. Additionally, make sure that your luxury car transporter provides a horizontal load which protects the engine fluids from destabilizing. Horizontal loads also protect the spoilers on exotic cars. “There are a lot of exotic car forums, as well as Ferrari, Porsche and Corvette clubs online,” Mr. Pliaconis says, re-emphasizing that “R” word. “You have to do your research.” Ms. Bennett suggests that art collectors make sure their art “is insured for transport and that this policy is in effect before your art is handled or transported.” Many art and auto shippers sell transport insurance but it tends to be more expensive. Ask for a fine arts risk policy instead. Jonathan Schwartz, President of Atelier4, a “soup-to-nuts assets-based business” in Long Island City, Miami and Los Angeles, recommends setting up “a good relationship with your insurance agent.” In terms of logistics, keep clear records of each object’s provenance and where it was acquired. “If the work is going overseas, you have to think in terms of things like seizure,” Schwartz says. Before picking up the phone, he advises checking out prospective companies on social media sites. “You can find out what is being said about the companies before calling a shipper,” he says. Or just call a gallery, auction house or museum for a recommendation. SE SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 13

MODERN KITCHEN DESIGN
FROM FUSSY TO SLEEK: THE NEW KITCHEN LOOK By M.C. SUSSMAN
Design: Tuthill Architecture 701 East Broward Blvd. Suite G, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33301 (954) 527 0007
IT MAY BE TIME to redo the kitchen again. The swing from mid-century
modern to avocado appliances and sparkly laminate countertops to the new millennium’s oh-so-opulent kitchens with wood cabinetry with intricately-carved corbels and tumbled marble backsplashes that were all the rage before the economic downturn have given way to an emphasis on functionality and a sleeker, more transitional look. And though North Shore style has traditionally been, well, traditional, it may be a sign of the times that there’s a move towards a timeless, more value-conscious, paredback transitional look. “People are looking for simpler kitchens, not contemporary but transitional, with simpler lines, simpler details, classic and timeless, with moldings that aren’t quite as heavy as in the past,” said Brad Berkoff, a certified kitchen designer and owner and president of Bisulk Kitchens in Garden City South. by Urrutia Design Bisulk Kitchens are known for their traditional look. But,Designed Brad said, what’s Matt Sartain Photography
hot now is “the opposite of what we heard five, 10, 15 years ago when it was more ornate with glazed finishes and paints.”
These days, door styles are simpler and traditional styles are being used in frameless construction, “which is considered in the industry more transitional.” If corbels are used to fashionably provide under-counter support, they have simpler styling and “less intricacy in the styling.” Increasingly they are being replaced with sleeker countertop supports and cantilevered counter edges. The trend, Brad said, started with the Diane Keaton/Jack Nicholson movie “As Good As it Gets.” “They came in and said, “I want that kitchen.” The styl20 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

and appliance settings from anywhere there is a wi-fi connection. Steam ovens are in vogue and refrigerator drawers remain popular. Wood, or tile that looks like wood is the flooring of choice, with an emphasis on warm, dark colors like walnut, Brad said. Small glass tiles, square, stacked and even round are being used on backsplashes. Tumbled marble, which is porous, is out, often replaced by basketweave accent or other porcelain tiles. In the showrooms at Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, a 30year-old kitchen and bath design company in Williston Park and Sag Harbor, traditional Wood-Mode kitchens are juxtaposed with sleek modern Allmilmo designs. Owner Ken Kelly said that in the last few years there has been a surge of interest in modern kitchens, particularly in the Hamptons, Manhattan, waterfront and other contemporary homes in Great Neck and Roslyn. Still, the more avant garde look represents less than 20 percent of his jobs. “We haven’t been putting modern kitchens in traditional homes,” Ken says, preferring the style of a home to be consistent throughout. “It’s a matter of what is really appropriate.” Though it could look beautiful, “you could be doing a disservice to the value of your home.” But even in traditional settings, Ken acknowledged a “huge uptick and a huge trend” towards “a cleaner, crisper look” and “towards simpler. Some people call it more modern; I call it more transitional.” Big moldings are out, he said. Mid century modern homes that had been made over with traditional trappings “are going back to a 2012 contemporary.” And then there’s the center island. Across the style spectrum, from traditional to transitional, eclectic, country or contemporary, “everyone wants monster islands,” Ken said. “You can’t make people’s islands big enough.” The bigger the island, the grander the breakfast bar and the more storage space for that pasta maker used once a year as well as the requisite breakfast bar dishwasher, sink and perhaps an additional set of refrigerator drawers. Of course, as folks downsize from 6000 square foot homes to 1300 square foot apartments, space and storage is at a premium and more than ever, good kitchen design and attention to detail is paramount. “They want

REGIONAL ARTS
TILLES CENTER
By LINDA TAGLIAFERRO
FOR MUSIC LOVERS, theater lovers and art lovers, it’s the North Shore version of Lincoln Center. With a dazzling 30-foot high, 3,600 square-foot atrium lobby of glass, steel and stone, a grand staircase and outdoor plazas, the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at the C.W. Post College of Long Island University in Brookville is a prime go-to place for Long Islanders to enjoy dance performances, Broadway shows and topnotch concerts featuring music from Beethoven to the Beatles. “If Long Island weren’t in the shadow of New York City, we would certainly be in the country’s top 10 areas in terms of world class visual and performing arts,” says Roger Tilles, chairman of the Tilles Center. It was through the Tilles family that the performing arts center became a reality. In 1979, administrators at C.W. Post College were faced with a major dilemma. During a severe snowstorm, the domed roof of the campus concert hall collapsed, and plans were discussed for the venue’s future. Gilbert Tilles, Roger’s father and then vice chairman of Long Island University, considered the options, and eventually, through his generous donation, made the venue a reality. “My father felt that if we were going to be involved in a project,” explains Roger Tilles, “then we had to be involved all the way.” A successful Long Island real estate
32 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
developer, the elder Tilles realized the area lacked a major performing arts venue, and consequently, many great performers could not appear here. “Long Island’s been very good to us, “ Roger Tilles says, “so we wanted to give back.” University administrators finally elected to use the same footprint as the first auditorium but to expand its range of performances. In 1985, Gilbert Tilles and his wife Rose donated over one million dollars to the hall that now bears their names. In 1981, the venue opened with 2200 seats, with Zubin Mehta conducting the New York Philharmonic. That year, audiences enjoyed an array of famed artists including Marcel Marceau, Alicia de Larrocha and Victor Borge. In 1986, Elliott Sroka became executive director, a post he still holds. “When I started here, my mandate was to expand the center dramatically and I did,” Sroka recalls. “We went from 24 shows a year to close to 100 in a fairly short period of time. We presented everything from pop music to comedy. In the mid-80s, we had performers including David Copperfield, Kitaro, Dizzy Gillespie, Raffi, and Peter, Paul and Mary.” In 1988, they presented the Big Apple Circus in the campus equestrian center and sports field. “That relationship lasted for almost two decades,” Mr. Sroka says, and led to more family-oriented programming.
As the venue’s performances expanded, so did the need for benefactors. “It’s very expensive [to run the center],” explains Sroka. “Luckily, the list of patrons is fairly long.” When Gilbert Tilles passed away in 1990, Frank Castagna, owner of the Americana at Manhasset, served as chairman of the board for 10 years. “The shopping center is one of the finest in the country,” comments Sroka. “The Americana was the sponsor of our annual subscription campaign. Together with his wife Rita, Frank’s mission was to strengthen the sense of community here.” From the luxurious boutiques at the Americana to the cultural offerings at the Tilles Center and the visual treasures of the nearby Nassau County Museum of Art, Sroka describes that stretch of Northern Boulevard as a “cultural corridor.” Gilbert and Rose Tilles’ children continue to support the center. “Peter was the founder of our annual golf tournament which raises funds every year for our arts education,” explains Sroka. “And Roger is involved in a wide range of things here. Their sister, Ellen Weil, is a major donor. Over the years, the family has given over $10 million to the center.” The venue also functions as a community educational institution. “Artists of world class stature like Yo-Yo Ma and Vanessa Redgrave
have given master classes to C.W. Post and local high school students,” explains Roger Tilles. “Our Long Island outreach program has grown tremendously to 20,000 students a year. We don’t just bring students here, but we also arrange programs, usually in higher needs school districts, where kids wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to attend artistic productions.” Alvin Ailey dancers, for instance, have individually visited schools the week before performances. “It’s very gratifying to see how the kids cheer when ‘their’ artists step onstage at the center,” says Tilles. The Tilles Center brings exceptional performances to those who would otherwise need to venture into Manhattan. “The city is a wonderful resource, but it’s a commitment of time, energy and money to travel there,” comments Sroka. “Very often, an orchestra will perform here the night after they’ve appeared at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center.” This spring’s lineup includes the Dance Theater of Harlem, and Broadway shows including “Hair.” In May, their endowment fundraiser, “Here to Stay – the Gershwin Experience,” includes soprano Sylvia McNair and pianist Kevin Cole. Roger Tilles concludes, “We’re trying to get Long Islanders to realize that they have such a treasure here.” SE
INTERIOR VISIONS
FUN WITH LIGHT On the lower level of the pool house of her Gothic-style Tennessee estate, trendsetting interior designer Jamie Beckwith built a futuristic cathedral-like blue lit acrylic wine cellar that holds 2000 bottles. (please see front cover.) The hi-tech LED lighting can be programmed to change colors when Beckwith entertains. The lights are built into the circular holes where the wine is stored, allowing the bottles to be seen from all angles, including through a glass ceiling that doubles as the floor for the sitting room above. Three large wooden spheres and the patterned wood block floor add warmth to the cellar. The informal pool house kitchen is open to the great room and has a sunny yellow 3-Form Chroma acrylic counter. The walls are covered in travertine and the stove backsplash is onyx illuminated from behind. Built in 2001, Beckwith’s 12,398-square foot main house is classic and out. The high-end traditional home has seven bedrooms and 6.5 baths outfitted with the finest finishes. The pool house continues the Gothic-style of the mansion, but with a decidedly modern twist inside. The estate is on the market for $5.89 million. For interest in this property contact Shawn Elliott at (516) 695-6349. SE

La Parma II: Italian Soul Food, Castelli-Style By Linda Saslow
Whatever you order, it will most assuredly be served by an experienced member of the La Parma staff -- many have been with the restaurant for more than 10 years, some even since it opened.

The synergy between the trades sizzled on Dec. 5 when designers, architects and home builders along with clients and associates of Shawn Elliott LUXURY Homes & Estates mingled at a social networking party at the striking Zicana Showroom in Westbury. Call it “old school social networking,” a cocktail party for making business connections the good old-fashioned way. “It goes back to the way business was done over 100 years ago,” said Shawn Elliott, networker extraordinaire and the brains behind the face-to-face networking event. “Business done by recommendation, everybody helping everybody to be successful.” The spectacular evening drew more than 250 guests who enjoyed music and cocktails along with meeting and greeting members of

the trades. Among the guests was five-time Emmy award winner Kathy Hobbs, the television journalist, celebrity interior designer and home stager. An HGTV Design Star finalist and the Co-Host and Executive Producer of the national real estate series Metro Residential Metro produced weekly for WPIX-TV Channel 11. A beautiful display of natural stones, marbles, granites and onyx provided a dazzling backdrop. Models served champagne and caviar. Guests enjoyed a Renaissance feast of Italian treats including more than a dozen types of olives, fresh burrata and other cheeses from various parts of Italy along with salamis, hams, peppers, onions, Caprese salads, meatballs, pastas and artisanal breads. Old school met new school social networking. And in true Shawn Elliott LUXURY fashion, it was a sensational and productive event. SE
