Mojo-StuMer ASSociAteS: thoroughly Mo When it comes to designing luxury homes, the award winning architectural firm Mojo-Stumer Associates takes a modernistic approach. Mark Stumer and Thomas Mojo, partners in the 31year-old firm, say that though they subscribe to the architectural modernism tradition associated with such luminaries as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright , their homes are very comfortable. “We believe that modernism is a style that can go in many different directions,” Stumer says. “From totally minimalist to art deco to more traditional modernism.” Though some “confuse modernism with with cold and uncomfortable, we’ve gone just the opposite to make our interiors very livable yet represent the modern way of life,” Stumer adds. 12 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
That is achieved in the way rooms are designed to facilitate conversation and accentuate view and entertainment. “We use furniture that has a strict contemporary philosophy yet sitting on it is as comfortable as a down and feather couch.” In addition to stunning home design, the firm has more recently taken on a new endeavor: designing high end yacht interiors. “These boats are 50 to 60 million dollars and we’ve become very well respected,” Mr. Stumer says. “We’ve been up for a number of awards and have gotten tremendous publicity in the boating world.” The firm’s sleek interiors represent the direction that contemporary high end boating design is going, Mr. Stumer says. Moving past traditional wood paneling and
raised moldings, the firm has introduced some “very interesting ceiling details in the boat interiors,” Mr. Stumer says. Becoming an architect was a natural for Mr. Stumer. He always loved drawing; his father was in construction. He earned his architecture degree at Pratt Institute. Upon graduation, he worked for the firm of Michael, Harris, Spector, now the Spector Group, where he met his partner Thomas Mojo. “I started off as his assistant,” Mr. Stumer recalls. Eventually they shared the “total design responsibility for the entire firm.” Soon they struck out on their own, founding MojoStumer Associates. “The two of us started out in my bedroom in Port Washington,” says Mr. Stumer, who was 27 at the time. The success of that first

office eventually led to a one room office in Great Neck. After hiring a secretary and a draftsman, they upsized to an office in Roslyn before buying their own building in Greenvale. Their corporate headquarters, Mr. Stumer says, is “a fun building,” set up “ very loft-like and artistic in terms of a studio atmosphere.” An old warehouse when they purchased it, the building had formerly been a factory used for duct work and as a printing house. “We found it a little off the beaten path but we loved it,” Mr. Stumer says. “It was a simple white box; we were able to gut it.” The partners left a lot of the interiors open. “We have two common interests,” Mr. Stumer says of his partnership with Mr. Mojo. “That’s good architecture and good interiors. We’re both designers and I guess that’s helped us in the sense that we shoot from the hip with business.” Through hard work and good design, the pair now employ 12 full-time architects and 35 employees, many who have worked with them for more than 20 years, two for over 25 years and one that came to work for them right out of school and never left. “ It must be a fun place to work,” Stumer says, though he can’t pinpoint his most memorable project. “It’s like asking who’s your favorite child,” he says. What does stick with him is the firm’s strong multi-generational bond with families. “We worked for the grandfather, the father and now the child,” he says. “Just think of the respect that makes us feel.” The firm has designed residences in Palm Beach, FL, brownstones and house-size apartments in Manhattan , mansions on the Gold Coast of Long Island, synagogues, car dealerships and office buildings. These include a Rolls Royce dealership in Plainview, a Honda dealership in Hempstead, Rubie’s office building
in Huntington, The Luxottica Group in Port Washington and Temple Beth El and Young Israel, both in Great Neck. Designing a luxury home is a collaborative effort, Mr. Stumer says, including the input of the client, architect and designer. “One of the keys to our success in project development and design is that we do our own interiors,” he says. “The architecture helps create and blend with the environment of the interiors.” Being involved makes the project more successful. “It makes life very easy for the client,” he says. “Our interiors are an integral part of our architecture in that our model has made every one of our interiors a signature piece representing that individual client.” Among examples of their work on the North Shore is a striking open and modern waterfront home in Kings Point with clean lines. It’s comfortable and offers plenty of seating and entertainment spaces for family and friends. Fashioned with natural and durable materials and filled with light, the home is situated to take advantage of fantastic water views. An Old Westbury residence combines a beautiful use of materials and large windows that bring the outside in, with multiple spaces to gather or entertain. It’s bold and striking, yet comfortable. Some of the firm’s clients found Mojo Stumer through the Internet or social networking. “I think it’s still personality and introduction that makes it,” Stumer says. “But we’ve had a number of clients that have researched us on the Internet and we’ve been successful in developing a project with them.” What Stumer enjoys most about architecture is the creativity. “When it clicks it’s a really good feeling,” he says. a t 90, David Chotan shows no signs of slowing down. The builder of luxury homes whose name is synonymous with contemporary design says he still works seven days a week and is on the job site every day. “I am a hands-on builder,” said the fresh-faced Chotan, interrupting a visitor to take a call from a subcontractor who said he was dropping off tile samples. “My job is to act as a liaison between the architect and the owner. I am involved to make sure they get their house, not the architect’s.” During his 60-year career, he has built “a few hundred” homes, 50 percent of which dot the tony North Shore communities of Great Neck, Old Westbury, Kings Point and Brookville. The son of Russian immigrants, Chotan grew up in Queens, graduated from Far Rockaway High School and enrolled in St. John’s University to study accounting. But after the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, he left college to enlist in the Navy. After the war, he returned to Long Island and went to work for a builder as a carpenter’s assistant. It was there that he learned the basics of framing a house and reading blueprints. “That experience taught me better than any technical school,” said Chotan, who eventually earned a certificate in architecture and building design from Harvard University in the late 1980s. His first foray into home building came in 1950. Scraping together $10,000--all the money he had--he bought a 10-acre lot in Great Neck and placed an ad in The New York Times for “Homes by Bayview,” offering to build 10 traditional-style, threebedroom, two-bath 2,200-square-foot homes priced at $19,900. Early on a Sunday, armed with a stack of architect’s plans, he sat at a desk beneath a tree on the undeveloped site. Although there were no model homes to tour, by the end of the day, he sold eight homes and two more by the end of the week, said Chotan, chalking up the quick sale to ample-sized rooms and closets and upscale fixtures. “I made enough of
a profit to go on and have credit with the banks.” It wasn’t until the 1960s that he began to build contemporaries in Nassau County, featuring his signature-style walls with sculpted shapes and indoor swimming pools. His own home, a dramatic, lightfilled 7,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, six-and-a-half bath contemporary he built in 1981 in Old Westbury on two acres, features expansive walls of glass, high ceilings, a loftstyle office with spiral staircase, a sauna, exercise room and a statue of the goddess Diana overlooking an indoor freshwater pool. Though he also builds traditionalstyle homes, 80 percent of his homes are contemporary. “The living is easier and entertaining is easier in a modern home,” he said. “Guests can flow from one section to another without room partitions getting in the way.” He entertains frequently, making parties for family members, which include his wife’s children and grandchildren and his daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and for his temple‘s congregation. He says the most important step in a new construction begins “long before the first brick is laid or a design is created. The cornerstone of every enterprise is getting inside people’s heads and asking a family how they live. I’ll ask if they have children, if one person goes to work and the other works from home, if they watch television or read,” he said. “You need to find out what works best for them.” In addition to building luxury homes, he also remodels homes from traditional to contemporary and viceversa, and has even repositioned a house so it would face the waterfront, he said. His homes are as varied as the amenities he installs in them, which include racquetball courts, pistol ranges, bowling alleys, movie theaters and one where the owner can “roll out of his bed and dive into a pool.” Chotan, who is currently working on two homes, doesn’t plan to retire any time soon. “I love what I do and I have a wife who puts up with it,“ he said with an impish smile. “I’m still pursuing clients.” SE SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 15

DESIGNERS’ SHOWCASE AWARD WINNER 2011: Richard Schlesinger: Surrounded by Things of Beauty The first time that Richard Schlesinger walked through the spectacular mansion that was about to become a Mansions & Millionaires designers’ showcase, he dreamed about becoming a designer super star. At 28 years old, he had just launched his own interior design business, and had grand visions for his future. “The designers were all told to choose three rooms that we wanted to design,” he recalled. “And then our hope was that we’d get assigned to one of the three.” Schlesinger was allocated a tiny sitting room for his first designers’ showcase. The room was so small that he figured it must have once 16 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY
been a closet. But he tackled the project with enthusiasm, creativity and his own unique style—decorating it from floor to ceiling in all black. While perhaps not one of his favorite all-time projects, that showcase put him on the map as a designer. “The best part was that I got noticed,” he recalled. His black sitting room was written up in Woman’s Day, and Schlesinger got a few new clients from visitors to the showcase who were impressed by his decorating flair. Since that time, he has participated in 24 designers’ showcases—many in the Hamptons and throughout the Gold Coast of Long Island.

The showcases, run by Mansions & Millionaires since the early 1970s, allow the public to visit magnificent mansions—many of which have been rejuvenated from disrepair to be made suitable for presentation. “For me, the showcases are a way to experiment and try out new ideas,” Schlesinger said. Most recently, Schlesinger was recognized for his innovative design treatment, when he was given the “Producers’ Award” for the bedroom and adjoining bathroom that he designed at last fall’s Designers’ Showcase at Chestnut Hill in Upper Brookville. Among the 30 interior designers who put their individual
touches into the grand Mount Vernon colonial estate built in 1914, Schlesinger was one of only two designers given the prestigious award. The most unusual feature of the bedroom, according to Schlesinger, was the white king-sized bed that he floated in the center of the room, to look and feel like an open cube. Over the fireplace that faced the bed, he hung “his” and “her” TVs, and chose an antique 1880 French armoire as the only important piece of furniture for the room. Details like molding on the ceiling, faux painting and an easy palette of creams, beiges, white and gray contributed to an alluring—and award winning—bedroom.
“At first, I was going for a Zen feeling for the room,” Schlesinger admitted. “But my minimal four accessories turned into eight, and then became 16. While I loved the look, I just couldn’t keep the Zen feeling, because I like to be surrounded by things of beauty.” This is nothing new to Schlesinger, whose fascination with collecting beautiful things dates back to his childhood, when he “loved to collect objects and then to find out how many different colors and sizes they came in.” In 1970, after earning a degree in Design from Buffalo State University, Schlesinger got his first real job: playing Santa Claus. But when the Christmas season was over, he wasn’t sure what to do next. Armed with his degree, his enthusiasm and a passion for design, Schlesinger found new opportunities: as a display manager in a warehouse furniture store, and as a designer of model homes. After several years gaining experience and confidence, he decided it was time to venture out on his own. Believing that everything happens for a reason, Schlesinger remembers that just as he was packing up his Rolodex, he happened to meet the producers of Mansions & Millionaires, and was selected to participate in his first designers’ showcase. And his fate as a designer was sealed. Aside from his continuing contributions to the showcases, Schlesinger has developed a following of loyal clients, who keep him juggling a busy schedule. At any given time, he works with between 12 and 20 clients, scattered throughout Long Island and Manhattan, which he said, “means a lot of shlepping.”
“On one recent day, I was in the three Bs—Brooklyn, Brookville and Bellmore,” he said with a chuckle. Schlesinger’s projects range from helping clients select individual pieces or accessories to decorating an entire house, sometimes traveling overseas to find the priceless treasures that his clients seek. Every day is different, which keeps life interesting for Schlesinger. I love what I do,” he admitted happily. “I like to shop, I like to collect things, and I like working with different people. Sometimes I’m a part time therapist and I hear things from my clients that never go past my lips. But it’s all part of a profession that is my passion.” “I’ve gotten used to working with clients whose tastes are different than my own,” he said. “But there’s a difference between my taste and their taste, as opposed to good taste and bad taste. The challenge is to help my clients make choices that they won’t grow tired of within a year or two.” For Schlesinger, every day is a new adventure. When not working with clients or designing for a showcase, he loves to travel, visit art shows and museums and shop. For the past nine years, he has also taught Interior Design at Suffolk Community College. And after five years living in Manhattan, he is getting ready to relocate to Long Island, where new challenges await him. “For as long as I’m energized by my work, I’ll keep on doing this,” he said. “When I meet a client and we click, I love to take part in creating a painting in 3D.” And for Schlesinger, that’s as good as it gets. From Tree To Table When trees on Long Island are felled, whether to clear the land or from violent weather conditions including hurricanes, they are often used for firewood or mulch, or simply wind up in landfills. But some of the hardwood trees on the Island have been transformed into spectacular tabletops, benches, bar tops, wall hangings and more by Long Island Timberworks. The Freeport-based company specializes in slabs as well as custom-made indoor and outdoor furniture ranging from coffee tables to dining room tables measuring 18 feet long by 4 feet wide. BUILDERS SHOWCASE: Robert Beer, owner of R.B. Shore Development says his claim to fame is his maternal grandfather. Morris Sosnow, the co-founder of Birchwood Park homes, later named the Birchwood Organization, was one of the biggest real estate developers on Long Island and a competitor of William Levitt, builder of Levittown. Starting in 1946, when the veterans returned from World War II, Sosnow built tens of thousands of middle-class affordable homes, among them Birchwood East and Birchwood West communities in Jericho that transformed the area into a bustling, sought-after suburb. Birchwood also constructed colonials, capes, splits and ranches from New Hyde Park, Plainview, East Meadow, Mineola and Westbury as well as the Water’s Edge complex in Bay Terrace. They were pioneers in building large communities of condominiums and townhouses around championship golf courses and built developments in Holtsville, Oakdale, Farmingdale, Medford Commack, Middle Island and Coram just name a few. To this day, people tell Robert that they live in homes his grandfather built. Sosnow also constructed the Jericho Atrium offices/Whole Foods shopping center and helped develop the Crossways at Woodbury. When Robert finished college he went to work for the family business and “learned the business from the ground up,” working in the field on a development to construct 850 units, two club houses, golf course and a sewer treatment plant out East. After five years in the field, Robert became involved with project management, estimating, scheduling, accounting, implementing a computer system with cost engineering, putting out purchase orders and schedules “knowing exactly how many two-by-fours are on a job at any one time.” When his grandfather passed away 11 years ago, the family business was sold to Kimco, a publicly traded company. Robert followed his passion and went on his own and started spot building higher end custom homes from
Great Neck to Southampton. “I build every house as if I am building for myself,” says Robert, whose website is Builtbybeer.com. “My style and designs cater to a certain clientele.” Recently Robert built a custom $5 million dollar home in Brookville and a $4 million spread in Muttontown. He is in the midst of putting up another home in Country Estates in Roslyn which was sold before he even broke ground. Many of the custom homes he builds are Hamptons shingle style. “Once you plant yourself in an area, things just seem to snowball because opportunities become available,” he says. As quoted in the New York Times, Last year, midway through the planning stage he sold a 6,200 sq ft. Hamptons Style, shingle and stone residence on a half acre in East Hills for 2.75 Million. Nearby a similar home of his was snatched up for 2.6 million. These styles of homes are so hot that many of them are being sold from blueprints says Mr. Beer. He will soon offer a similar style home in East Hills Roslyn on a one acre lot for 3 million. “Years ago younger couples wanted five acres of land in Old Westbury,” Mr. Beer said. People want more of a sense of community today. The mayor and the village of East Hills have done a tremendous job of creating that. “Back then we built everything with the mentality that what you see is what you get.” Now it’s a different ball game. “ “Custom building is a lot more hand holding,” he says,
working with a sophisticated clientele, that “knows what they want.” He builds three to four homes a year, ranging from 4,500 to 10,000 square feet, doing everything from land development, project management to handing over the keys to the finished project. Very involved in design and detail, Robert works with some of the areas most well established architects. Proficient at scheduling with lead times and overlaps, each home takes Robert approximately eight to 12 months to build. He has long-standing relationships with subcontractors who help him “build a quality product in a timely manner.” Robert says his building business “didn’t skip a beat” during this downturn. “I was always taught to keep something on the shelf and available for when things picked up.” “My grandfather taught me well,” he said. “I would never be where I am today without having that life lesson of learning the business from the ground up.” Robert Beer’s primary goal is to design and build homes of the very finest quality and value. It took visionary planning and dedication to save this treasured landmark from demolition and turn
it into a world-class arts center. In 1984, when the Port Washington school district’s Board of Education announced plans to close the Main Street School, residents joined forces— not only to preserve the historic 1908 building, but to create a multifaceted community hub that would offer access to rich cultural events and recreational/social opportunities, and provide housing. A small town success story, Landmark on Main Street now consists of 59 units of affordable senior housing and a 25,000-square-foot Community Center. But what draws Long Islanders and city dwellers from all around the area is the
Jeanne Rimsky Theater, a 425-seat venue housed in what was once the school’s auditorium and run by the not-for-profit Landmark on Main Street Inc. “We’ve been fortunate to grow and expand with incredible support from our patrons and our founders who made this ‘Miracle on Main Street’ happen,” said Sharon MaierKennelly, the theater’s executive director. Since it opened in 1995, Landmark has quadrupled its offerings, from less than 10 programs to nearly 40 each season. In addition to musical events, Landmark also hosts a free speaker series, “Conversations from Main Street,” that features a variety of authors, educators, celebrities and others. Past speakers have included the author Nelson DeMille, sports star Patrick McEnroe, and then-New York State Attorney General (now Governor) Andrew Cuomo. JOHN W. ENGEMAN THEATER Picture a suburban downtown Main Street of old and what comes to mind? A general store, pharmacy with soda fountain, and, of course, a movie house. Silent films and vaudeville ruled the days when Northport opened its first theater in 1912. The venue provided entertainment for Northport residents until it burned down in 1931; a new movie house took its place the following year, a few doors up from the original, and remained open until 1996. The theater sat dormant until longtime Huntington resident Kevin O’Neill and his wife, Patti, put into motion a plan that would bring Broadway-quality theater to Northport while also honoring Patti’s brother, who was killed in Iraq in 2006. Thus was born the John W. Engeman Theater, which opened in June 2007. The multimillion-dollar renovations brought the magic of the original theater back to life, and then some. The owners restored the elaborate Baroque-style murals that give theatergoers the feel of classic theaters of yesteryear. They continued the mood with new stadium-style seating and carpeting in gold and burgundy shades that complement the murals. They also added an orchestra pit and a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system to guarantee a quality theater experience. The excitement begins before the show starts, with drinks in the classic wood-paneled piano lounge. It continues after the show, with theatergoers and newcomers listening to local performers or, on occasion, one of the show’s stars, in the lounge. But what sets the picturesque theater apart more than anything else is the quality of the casts. : “Lots of theaters on Long Island put on musicals, but what makes us different is that we cast actors from the Broadway talent pool in the city,” Kevin O’Neill said. “We can’t do the

No audience member is more than 70 feet from the stage.” Now in its fifth season, the theater also hosts fund-raising performances to give back to various local nonprofits—another plus for the entire region. It also boasts a children’s performing arts school, offering year-round classes and summer camp for aspiring child actors. “The Engeman Theater has become a fixture in Northport village and an integral part of the village’s downtown,” said Frank P. Petrone, the Huntington Town Supervisor. “Discerning theatergoers have learned they don’t have to travel to New York City to see Broadwayquality shows. Village businesses have embraced the theater and taken advantage of marketing synergies to help make Northport village a destination for people looking for a special night out.”

So far, the response has exceeded their expectations. “Huntington has always been supportive of the arts,” Doyle said. “For us it was important to continue that tradition.” Creating a theater that could draw world-renowned acts such as Elvis Costello and the B-52s to Long Island also provides a huge boost to the economy, he said. “Huntington Village has always been a Mecca as a shopping and

Now we have businesses bustling all week long, especially on days that were traditionally slow.” The Paramount features a main floor general admission area, which mixes standing and seated options; loges on the mezzanine for reserved seats; and a standing-room-only back bar. Every area has a great view of the stage, along with quality sound. For those willing to dip into their pockets for special treatment, the Paramount’s owners created the Founder’s Club, a “secret” bar modeled after the speakeasy style. The $2,500 annual fee also provides early access to the best seats in the main theater. Town Councilwoman Susan Berland helped bring the Paramount to Huntington. She, believes that

THE PARAMOUNT Long Islanders were saddened when the music stopped playing at the Inter-Media Arts Center, better known as IMAC, in downtown Huntington. The beloved music venue closed its doors in June 2009, a victim of declining arts funding, a declining economy, and a building (circa 1925) that had been declining for decades. Late last September, the beat returned with the opening of The Paramount, expanded and renovated from its days as the IMAC to accommodate a crowd of 1,500, more than triple the theater’s previous capacity. The 29,000-squarefoot Paramount bears virtually no resemblance to its predecessor, having achieved a funky Manhat-
It’s been seven years in the making, but the curtain will soon rise at the Westbury Performing Arts Center, a completely refurbished theater and restaurant complex at the site of the shuttered 1927 Westbury Theater on Post Avenue at the core of the village. Its rebirth can be attributed to Cyrus Hakakian, a garment industry entrepreneur who decided to invest nearly $1.7 million into what he acknowledges was a “leaking, run down, dark mass of building.” “When it came up for auction and I walked in, it took my breath away,” said Hakakian. “The main theater had a nearly 45-foot ceiling, and a proscenium and stage that were out of this world.”
Hakakian immediately saw beyond the dilapidated structure and got to work transforming the historic 30,000-square-foot complex. The $8 million renovation, accomplished with the help of architectural firm Hoffman Grayson Associates and builder Zucaro Construction, included replacing the old Tudor-style exterior with a stone-and-stucco “contemporary twist” on Art Deco style, with mosaics and a seamed metal roof. Inside is a Broadway-size proscenium stage with unobstructed views from every seat in the house (400 on the main level and 300 in the balcony); an upscale restaurant; a coffee house; and several loft style apartments geared to artists, dancers and musicians. Cabaret, Broadway road shows, comedy acts, and live music will be on the performing arts schedule, along with simulcasts of opera and other grand events from around the world on a huge, pull-down screen. The project is the culmination of a decade-long downtown revitalization, which has included renovated storefronts with vintage signage, a paved piazza with a fountain and waterfall and antique-style street lamps, according to Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro. “The theater has the potential for being a tremendous center of gravity for the village, attracting new patrons, shoppers, and tenants for the 800 multi-family residential units that exist within a block of the downtown area,” he said. He also believes it will attract new businesses to the town and be “a really unique place for the arts in central Nassau County.” Hakakian is pleased by the growing interest. “Not a day passes that I don’t get a phone call or email from residents saying they can’t wait for the project to be done,” Hakakian said. “It’s been eyesore for many years, and the town wants it badly. It will bring tremendous economic opportunity to Westbury and the surrounding areas. There’s really nothing like it on Long Island.” (There was no schedule available at press time.) SE

Though many New Yorkers sing the praises of the Palm Beach to Miami corridor, the west coast of Florida offers different but considerable charms and delights. From the wide, sun-washed sandy beaches of Marco Island to the picturesque Naples waterfront, a feeling of laid back Southern gentility prevails on the less hurried, less crowded Gulf of Mexico coast, the perfect spot for a long weekend getaway, a snowbird haven or gracious year round living. Four miles wide with six miles of sun-dappled tropical shoreline, Marco Island, with a population of 14,000 year round residents that swells to more than 30,000 during the snowbird days of winter, lies at the Gateway to the Everglades 50 miles south of Southwest Florida International Airport in Ft. Yet, crossing the bridge from the mainland, it feels like it is a world away. The largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, Marco Island is nestled among miles of uninhabited mangrove islands, bays, creeks and the Gulf of Mexico. Vacationers and winter refugees from colder parts enjoy the sunny 70s and 80s degree weather, walking the beach, playing golf on six courses, tennis and fly fishing. Accommodations range from plush and comfortable quarters in resort hotels to condominiums, villas and rental apartments. Dolphins, always a joy to behold, ply the Island’s calm waters. On a recent long weekend, the deluxe Marco Beach Ocean Resort was a perfect place to relax and unwind. The boutique all suites hotel on S. Collier is located at the center of

There were flat screen TVs in both the living room and bedroom and the kitchen was well equipped with a half-size refrigerator, microwave, oven and the requisite pots, pans, china and flatware. The heated pool, on the fourth level, has its own casual bar and grill, with umbrella tables for dining and free mini smoothies every day at 3 p.m. An elevator whisks guests

Centrally located, the Marco Beach Ocean Resort was an easy spot from which to explore the Island, from Fantasy Island-style multimillion dollar mansions to yachtladen marinas with friendly eateries like Mangos Dockside Bistro. At the local four screen movie theater in Marco Walk shopping center, I savored a baked brie appetizer with pears and apples during the film. Waitress service is available for din-
ner, drinks, or a big tub of popcorn, with seating at round tables or a counter as well as more typical rows of chairs outfitted with pop-up meal trays. In the same courtyard shopping center, Captain Brien’s Seafood and Raw Bar restaurant offers music and dancing and is also home to the Off the Wall Comedy Club. For dessert, don’t miss the homemade scoops at Beebe’s Ice Cream. Twenty miles north, in Naples, rocking chairs are on the porch at the La Playa Beach and Golf Resort, Beyond two sets of glass French doors, the eclectic lobby, with its wood planked vaulted ceilings and crystal chandeliers, is elegant yet homey and just a little bit funky. My beachfront room had great views of the Gulf coupled with the old world charm of a four poster bed with butterfly netting, a broad desk, a comfy sofa with ottoman and a marble-topped bistro table. A chaise lounge and two chairs on the broad balcony were perfect for watching pelicans dive after fish or enjoying brilliant sunsets. Baleen, the hotel’s stunning restaurant and bar has upholstered booths as well as long wooden banquet tables and more traditional round tables. More tables and bar seating outside occupy two levels of waterfront terrace. For cool evenings, Adirondack chairs circle a large firepit on the lawn. Four cascading swimming pools set with natural stone blend into the lush landscape, along with manmade ponds and waterfalls. The 18-hole LaPlaya Golf Course is 15 minutes away. Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South, downtown Naples’ lively hub of sidewalk cafes, restaurants, elegant shops, art galleries, a community theater and ice cream parlors, is a 20 minutedrive. But for a hearty homespun breakfast, head to Joe’s Diner on Rt. 41 around the corner from LaPlaya. The scrumptious eggs, oatmeal and freshly baked mini-muffins will woo you back day after day. SE

F
or many of us, the image of Lucy and Ethel in the candy factory episode of the television classic “I Love Lucy” still elicits guffaws. While four local female chocolatiers remember that hilarious scene fondly, for them there’s nothing funny about making chocolates. Instead they consider it an art. Each professes a life-long love of chocolate that they’ve translated into distinct cocoa creations, taking the time to both create quality chocolates that keep customers coming back for more and adapting to industry trends. Here we present a showcase of confections and the women who create them. Susan Ackerman, owner of Chocolicious in Locust Valley, went to law school before deciding what she really wanted was to open a candy store. That was 20 years ago. She’s now in her third location, a corner spot on Birch Hill Road where the scent of chocolate draws you through the door and the butter-yellow décor adds to the cheery atmosphere. But it is the cases filled with raspberry truffles, chocolate-covered marzipan and other sweet delights that draw the eye— and summon the taste buds. Ackerman uses American chocolate and adds her own milk, butter and other ingredients. For additional flavorings, she says she prefers subtlety. “We don’t do exotic flavors like chili or tea. We use different flavors in everyday life that are mild, not overbearing,” she says. “Even if you don’t like rum or brandy you can still enjoy our truffles because the flavor is mild so the chocolate flavor is still there.” Those showcase gourmet truffles include cinnamon, champagne and Grand Marnier, each decorated with copper, gold, purple or pink “sugar dust,” a trend Ackerman says replaces the once-popular painted molds and colored chocolates. But she also makes kid-friendly favorites like chocolate Gummi bears, giant marshmallow pops, candy-covered pretzels, peanut butter and jelly filled pretzel logs and Rice Krispie cakes. With molded chocolates for favors and gifts, there’s something for every chocolate lover here. Lee Perrotta is The Chocolate Lady of Oyster Bay, a self-named die-hard chocoholic who believes the candy is “magic medicine.” Chocolate is even in her blood—lineage, that is—since she uses her Italian great-aunt’s recipes for hot chocolate (which has five different layers) and six classics, including hazelnut, caramel and cherry cordials. A trained pastry chef, Perrotta travels to the West Indies each year to purvey her own cocoa. “I use 10 different chocolates from all over the world,” Perrotta says. “For instance, Hungary is famous for their black chocolate, so the last time I came back I made Hungarian black truffles that
sold out in four hours.” Conscious of the health benefits of chocolate, she also mixes in blueberries and acai berries for their antioxidants and dips super fruits like pomegranate, mango and papaya in chocolate. Her 1917-era style shop, opened in 2008, also includes novelty chocolates like beauty masks, cell phone holders, chocolate paintings, sculptures, and even a “naughty corner” for adults, along with specialties like the blue pearl of Oyster Bay and chocolate ganache truffles. Just don’t ask Perrotta to reveal which of her many candies are her great-aunt’s secret recipes. That she is keeping to herself. Heather Foley didn’t set out to create gluten-free chocolates when she debuted Azure Chocolat in Centerport in 2004. The former sales training manager wanted to open a shop that reminded her of France, “where you wander in and
the chocolatiers, all of whom are also working moms, create specialties for every holiday, from chocolate-covered cherries for Valentine’s Day to skeletons for Halloween. And, of course, the chocolate makers happily taste-test everything thoroughly. everything is freshly made, like a little chocolate bakery.” Her Greenlawn store, where she relocated in 2009, certainly conveys that image with its azure-painted walls, crystal chandelier and white décor. It was the challenge of creating chocolate goodies for customers with food allergies that set her current path. “My goal was to provide a gluten-free product that tastes indistinguishable, so that you’re eating a really good chocolate that happens to be gluten-free,” Foley says. The line was a hit. Her gluten-free chocolate products are also sold in local Whole Foods stores. Using Belgian chocolate and all-natural ingredients, Foley created a line that includes truffles like pumpkin spice, Cabernet Sauvignon, champagne, walnut lavender honey, roasted banana and jasmine flower truffles. “I like to use a mix of savory and sweet flavors to bring out the nuances of the chocolate,” she says. Foley also makes toffees that don’t stick to your teeth and even a beauty bark that’s stuffed with
Omega-3s and good for you: a slab of chocolate with blueberries, golden flax, cocoa nibs, sea salt and walnuts. But she also still follows popular trends, including creating caramels topped with sea salt. In 1980, Mary Alice Meinersman answered an ad in the Pennysaver to dip chocolates in the window at Bon Bons Chocolatier in Huntington. That part-time job turned into a career when she bought the store in 1985. Since then it has become a family business. Her daughter, Susannah, works with her to create not only the chocolate line, but the vast array of seasonal gift items they sell in their spacious Main Street store. While their popular items also include toasted coconut marshmallows and white chocolate popcorn, their mainstay is chocolate. “Our chocolate is American-made from a Swiss formula,” says Mary Alice Meinersman. “We do hand-rolled truffles like champagne and hazelnut with ganache centers. Chocolate is a wonderful medium for all flavors because it blends so well with coffee, mint, orange, raspberry and Grand Marnier.” In keeping with a new trend, many of the chocolates are designed with cocoa butter transfers, acetate sheets printed with leaves or flowers that are placed on chocolates before they’re cooled. The touted health benefits of dark chocolate have made almond bark a popular seller, Meinersman says. But so are confections containing peanut butter, a uniquely American product. It’s hard to resist watching chocolates being dipped in a glass room inside the store, where besides the luscious dark citron noir truffles or cinnamon chocolate you can buy a rug for your home. The chocolatiers, all of whom are also working moms, create specialties for every holiday, from chocolate-covered cherries for Valentine’s Day to skeletons for Halloween. An instant hit, MP Taverna, a two-story Greek restaurant in the heart of Roslyn village, opened last year to wide acclaim and the great cooking of executive chef -owner Michael Psilaki, a home grown master of rustic Greek cuisine. Instead of attending culinary school, he learned the basics of cooking growing up in Queens and Long Island in his Greek mother’s kitchen. His formula has continued to please. In 2008, Psilaki was named “Chef of the Year” by Bon Appetit and Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine. He also owns Kefi in Manhattan. M.P. Taverna’s atmosphere is casual, the crowd chatty and the noise level high. The decor is well suited to the food. Diners sit on striped banquettes; tables and floor are bare wood and the the walls have dark wood paneling and blinds. Among the fun to share appetizers are octopus, crispy cod, mac and four cheese with spinach and bechamel, and meatballs with olive, onion and tomato sauce. Entrees like branzino, salmon, chicken, hangar steak and Greek sausage come simply grilled, with a choice of interesting salads on the side. Besides the Greek MP salad, choices include a bulgar salad with medjool dates, almonds, pomegranate, olives and pistachio; a tomato salad with string bean, grilled onion and feta and my favorite, a dried fruit salad with young greens, smoked almonds and manouri cheese. You can also choose to have your grilled branzino with fingerling potatoes, cherry tomatoes and olives. Specialties include lamb burgers, and on Saturday nights, a braised lamb shank served with orzo and root vegetables. For larger celebrations, M.P. Taverna will prepare a whole kid goat, suckling pig, baby spring lamb or a shank of veal, with two days advance notice. Desserts are not to be skipped. The Halvah brownie was moist and delicious, accompanied by a scoop of tahini ice cream. Fresh fruit includes grilled pineapple and watermelon. One of the best values on the North Shore, you’ll visit M.P. Taverna again and again.
There is no pretense at this friendly Mediterranean-style fish restaurant across from the Long Island Rail Road station in Great Neck. A small storefront, often crowded with diners, it has the seating grouped in two rows by twos and fours, often with larger parties at long narrow tables. Despite the sometimes tight quarters, its loyal followers come back regularly for ample salads, the first rate, simply prepared fresh fish and an ambiance that feels like home. Once seated, small tasting bowls of tzaziki, eggplant, red cabbage, tahini, and pickled vegetables are brought to the table along with a basket of warm, crusty bread. Salads are not to be skipped. The Israeli salad of diced tomatoes, cucumbers and onion; a “green” salad of shredded romaine with feta cheese , dill and scallions, or the Greek salad with romaine, cucumbers, green bell peppers, tomatoes and a slice of feta on top, come in two sizes but even the smaller portion is large enough for two. Another great appetizer to share is the plate of thickly sliced fried eggplant, zucchini and green pepper. Among my favorites is the Branzino prepared “half and half.” Though listed as grilled on the menu, upon request the chef grills the fish, then lightly dips it in a fryer at the last moment. Served whole, or with the head removed upon request, the result is a crispy, and delicious skin covering a moist, tender, flavorful fish. Another good choice is the whole red or black tilapia known as St. Peter’s Fish, grilled or fried, and in season, barbounia, or small red mullets. The weakest link at Turquoise are the side dishes that come with each entree and haven’t varied in years from a choice of two, including steamed medley of asparagus, broccoli and carrots, a grilled tomato, rosemary potatoes or basmati rice. Dessert options include cake of the day-- usually a Tiramisu or fruit salad. Try the mint tea; it comes in a tall glass filled with mint leaves, or if you like your cup of Joe strong, the Turkish coffee. Chances are, the next time you come back, the attentive wait staff will remember your favorite dishes. SE

LIMANI In Greek, Limani means seaport. In Roslyn, that “seaport” is an imposing white limestone building that used to be a car dealership. Instead of 4-cylinder Saturns, beyond the walls of glass is a casually elegant, upscale yet relaxed restaurant with soaring ceilings, gold chandeliers, marble columns, a white marble bar, eclectic decor and an open kitchen. The striking surroundings not withstanding, the star of the show at this Mediterranean restaurant is the fresh Greek seafood that’s simply divine, and in Greek fashion, on display and served by weight. Appetizers are ample enough to share. Have a spanakopita of fresh spinach, leeks feta cheese wrapped in phyllo; the melizanosalata, a garlic and eggplant puree or the skordalia spread, a blend of almonds and garlic. Try the grilled octopus or go for the raw bar sampler of oysters, clams, shrimp, Maryland crab, New Zealand mussels and Maine lobster. Among the whole fresh fish, served lightly grilled and filleted tableside is arctic char -- a pink sea trout, wild Pacific coast salmon, Dover sole and from the Mediterranean, Loup de Mer and Royal Dorado. Meat lovers can choose from veal or lamb chops or a cowboy steak as well as chicken. Sides highlights are the red and yellow peppers, spinach and Greek fries. Among the desserts are baklava, sorbets, creme brulee, bougatsa -- a custard wrapped in phyllo with cinnamon and powdered sugar, served warm; Yaourti or authentic Greek yogurt with thyme, honey and walnuts. For the chocoholic -Chocolatina, a warm chocolate soufflé, is served with roasted figs and fig ice cream. Shawn Elliott’s reputation for throwing the most fabulous launch parties on the Island stands tall, no matter what the glitches. Because of an electrical box fire last September at Chestnut Manor, at the last minute the first opening night party for the Mansions & Millionaires 2011 Designers’ Showcase in Upper Brookville took place entirely in the great hall at the elegant mansion at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, the beneficiary of the showcase. What a treat! The Great Gatsby-esque Gold Coast 1920s Tudor-style mansion was an incredible delight, from its striking 86-acres of gardens and grounds to the castle-like interiors. Wine flowed. Guests nibbled on morsels of steak, creamed spinach and other delights from favorite area restaurants like Rothmann’s Steakhouse and Bar Frites. Worth a walk up the grand staircase were both the five stained glass window scenes from Shakespearean plays on the landing and the ice cream sundaes offered among the desserts. Since the guests couldn’t be shuttled to Chestnut Manor that evening as planned, two weeks later, Shawn Elliott hosted a second soiree at the Designers’ Showcase, a 1914 Wolver Hollow Mount Vernon colonial estate once home to aspiring movie star Pia Zadora and her husband, Meshulam Riklis, a wealthy businessman. Guests oohed and aah-ed as they toured nearly 40 brilliantly decorated rooms, from the 70-foot long grand art-filled gallery to Jeani Ziering’s Asian-themed dining room, Richard Schlesinger’s award-winning cream-colored bedroom with a floating modern four-poster bed covered in

THE GOOD LIFE Recently I bought a deluxe smartbin garbage can with motion-activated lid. The passive infrared motion sensor that gives the smartbin its smarts, blinks red. Constantly. The first morning after its arrival, I was in the kitchen with my best friend – a first cup of coffee. As I sat and sipped, the blinking red light seemed to taunt me. It’s part of a growing number of lights in my house marking the technological spray of gadgets and equipment. During the day, they’re less noticeable. But a pre-dawn walk about the house revealed a rainbow of 21st century living. Television cable boxes shine the time green, as does the alarm clock. The DVD panel reads: “Disc,” I must have left my latest NetFlix pick in the player. A vertical line of green and gold flickers on the modem; the front panel of my laptop reveals it’s charging with two deep blue dots that make it look like a stingray spying me from the ocean floor. The screen of my charging iPhone reveals a lime green bar, and the heater for my contact lenses (chemicalfree disinfecting) shines an amber square. The wireless router, multiple surge protectors, smoke detectors and radon detectors proclaim security and safety status with colorful twinkles of light. In the kitchen, the microwave’s square-styled numbers illuminate the time of day or the elapsing time until the next meal, when a series of high-pitched beeps (a modern day dinner bell) announce it’s time to grab your knife and fork. The microwave even snitches on LIPA – if the power goes out when you’re not home, the LED screen gets all discombobulated with illegible symbols. It actually looks angry Plugging in my Kindle creates the most compelling of the night lights. Each time I charge the e-reader, a different author’s black and white image presents itself on the 5x3 1/2 inch screen: Emily Dickinson, Charlotte Bronte, Agatha Christie. One night Virginia Woolf gazes across my table; the next night Jules Verne’s bearded face is looking out my window; and I eagerly await my favorite in the author rotation - Jane Austen’s serene stare. Who will I sleep with tonight? Mark Twain? Ralph Ellison? John Steinbeck?

Each night’s screen is a surprise. Sometimes I don’t sleep with a writer. Images of birds or fish or works of art populate the screen as I power-down while my e-reader juices up. Moonlight shines through the vertical glass panels of my front door, but it’s the house alarm pad on the wall that catches my attention. When you’re up in the middle of the night you focus on the strangest details, such as the beat of the blink. The SmartBin’s red dot flashes every
four seconds, whereas the alarm pad reflects a 25-second cycle, the time it takes the system to sweep and check all connections. It’s not just the SmartBin’s relentless blinking, but its overzealous opening. Whenever I go near the bin, it opens. I get milk from the refrigerator – it opens. I reach for a mug in the cupboard above – it opens. It has become my Hal-9000. I began altering my movements to steer clear of its infrared range. (Is its range expanding?)
Plus, it’s noisy. At night the house is crypt quiet until the SmartBin’s lid rises emitting a mechanical pulley-like sound in an ascending and descending four-note beat, similar to a slot machine minus the excitement. Years ago it was the tick of the clock that kept you company in the wee hours. Today it’s the winks of technology that spy on the sleepless in the dead of night. Atop the 22-inch-high white bin is a control panel that resembles a face. Two buttons on the far left and far right – the ears; a strip of non-blinking sensor dots in the lower center resemble the mouth (it’s grinning); and the eternal red blinking dot is its Cycloptic eye. The kitchen is one of my favorite places in the house to read. Perhaps it’s a throwback to childhood days doing homework, or the proximity to food. Whatever the reason, I wasn’t about to let the SmartBin muscle me out of my space. A few nights ago I came down with my Kindle to read but was distracted by the bin’s grin. So I decided to break the spell of Mr. Smarty Bin by turning it around. When I attempted to grab it, the lid shot up, making a whirring racket. Crouched down, I approached under sensor level, grabbed the bin by its girth, and spun it around in the opposite direction so that the eye was facing the wall. All the while it was opening and closing in midspin, as if movement had re-booted the beast. Finally, silence. Now I grinned. Satisfied, I returned to my chair. But then, reflected in the stainless steel oven adjacent to it, a blink. Hal was winking. The next day, I retrieved the box the bin came in from the garage (I’d saved it…just in case). Even the box mocked me: ‘Its low noise operation won’t distract either, unlike conventional covered bins.’ And I retrieved my old swing-top covered-bin that didn’t require four D batteries. Once again, morning coffee time is quiet and blink-free. SE
