SHAWN ELLIOTT Publisher’s letter It’s spring, a time of new beginnings. Our spring issue heralds the debut of our new creative director, Eric Neher, formerly of Elements magazine. He pledges to bring even more pizzazz to the pages of our newly expanded, wellreceived quarterly lifestyle magazine, now in its second year! Among our new features is the Designer Spaces column, debuting at the extraordinary stone castle that is home to interior decorator Mercedes Courland, a designer with an innate eye for style. Our Guilty Pleasures page focuses on out-of-the-ordinary extravagances for the home, such as the unique custom doors by Bella Porta. Bling, our new fashion accessories page, checks out the chicest shades of the season. Our main story takes a look back at Manor Houses, the stately and handsome homes of earlier eras that still grace our landscape. Outdoor art can transform a backyard, so we’ve taken a look at sculpture gardens. And we look at the latest trends in the home theater craze as video streaming moves into the mainstream. Our automotive feature might once again be considered a case of four-wheel envy: which cars the boldface among us are driving. Porsches, Jaguars, Mercedes a-plenty; not a hybrid in the bunch, unless you toss in our eco-conscious editor-in-chief, who just traded her Lexus for a cool new Prius with a solar roof. Need a vacation and some pampering? In this issue, we travel to the super luxe Grand Velas Resort & Spa in Nuevo Vallarta, on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Closer to home, in our Good Life column, we check out the new contenders on the haute frozen yogurt scene. And because it’s not just takeout anymore, we take you to three high-end Chinese restaurants. Chopsticks, please. Of course, Shawn Elliott LUXURY wouldn’t be complete without a look at this season’s featured property, a gracious 7,000 square foot Manhasset home that has it all, from ornate handpainted ceilings and goldleaf carvings to a Tuscan-style kitchen and a batting cage. It’s a real home run. Happy spring! Happy reading!

Thomas Abraham:

ABRAHAM LITTLE NECK DEVELOPMENT By M.C.SUSSMAN

Thomas Abraham, the chief executive of Huntington-based Abraham Little Neck Development, started servicing swimming pools in Old Westbury, Brookville and Sands Point when he was 15. Coming from a family with six siblings and two parents living in a small Cape -style house in Huntington, he was awed by the homes he saw and the people he met. “I liked having the ability to be part of that,” Abraham says. At 17, when he graduated high school, he got his own swimming pool route, vacuuming 15 to 20 pools weekly. Eager to learn and do more, by the early 1990s he was installing swimming pools, laying out patios and doing the landscaping, and started building poolhouses and cabanas, “trying to tap into the new construction end.” Confident in Abraham’s abilities, one of his clients, a high profile lawyer, fronted him in 1997 with three lots in Roslyn that he had picked up through a foreclosure to build houses. The deal was to

14 SPRING 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

Mercedes Courland, MASTER OF THE CLASSICAL WITH A TWIST Mercedes Courland’s flair for interior design is a natural. She comes from a family of interior designers and architects that stretches back to her grandfather, Theodore, who was involved in the “International” style and architectural movement developed in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. Her father, Egil P. Hermanovski, and his three brothers were all artists and architects in their native Latvia. “I was doing floor plans when I was 7,” says Courland, who grew up in Brookville. She graduated from Parsons School of Design in Manhattan, studied French design from Louis XIV to Art Nouveau in Paris and did a stint designing interiors for the Great Neck architectural firm of Blum & Nerzig. At 25, she opened her own firm. “I never thought I would have another career option,” Courland says. “ It’s in my genes. It’s in my blood.” Much of design is based on intuition. “You either have the eye or you don’t,” she adds. “Fortunately I am one of the ones who has an eye.” Her resume for the last three decades includes an exclusive clientele from Miami to Southampton and Aspen. She has participated in seven designer showcases in the metropolitan area. Courland says she’s a “good renderer” and can “walk into an empty space and describe what I am going to do there.” Then she sketches her vision and selects fabrics. Her rich signature interiors combine architectural details in unique ways, using a refined and sophisticated palette and scale in “dramatic formats.” A prime example is the turreted 7,890 square foot stone castle built a decade ago that she shares with her husband, Robert LaPorta, on a one and a half acre lot on a cliff overlooking Roslyn Harbor. With five fireplaces, it’s elegant and worldly yet supremely comfortable. The round

foyer is in the 22-foot high turret, with a winding staircase to a balcony that circles the second floor going off in all directions. “We wanted a casual elegance,” she said, having worked with Huntington architect Charles D’Alessio. The floor is Jerusalem stone with brass medallion inlays. Arched alcoves add wall detail and light streams through the windows circling near the top of the turret. Courland uses the classical with a twist and loves mixing the highly ornate with the super sleek.“If you start with the classical proportions and detailing,” she says, “you can’t go wrong.” Besides, she knows contemporary designs well, having done super hi-tech, minimalist work for the Spector Group in the 1980s, before the pendulum swung back to the traditional. Courland creates focal points with special effects that can play up a room’s assets and play down its shortcomings. She is also a master of tricks of the trade. In her receiving room, for example, what looks like elegant woodwork is actually embossed panels of sheetrock that “give the feeling of wood.” Her brother, an artist, created the glossy mottled fireplace wall with a marine varnish in a burgundy color that makes you “feel like you are sitting in a glass of Merlot.” In the foyer, the walls look like the real deal but are faux stone. “I know how to create the magic without spending a million dollars,” she says. “It’s like wearing a Hermes bag with Gap jeans.” She designs custom carpets to pick up, for instance, the fabric in a Louis XV chair, and creates pieces of custom furniture that are “works of art, yet highly affordable.” What pops in the music room is the fireplace flanked by Corinthian columns and a marble surround. “Those special details are what makes a project stand out,” Courland says. An expansive mural of Pebble Beach covers one wall in the din-

By M.C. SUSSMAN

ing room; at the other end a stained glass panel separates it from the library. A gold leaf medallion set in a frame draws attention to the burl dining room table laced with mahogany ribbons. A semi-circular window seat fills one of dozens of nooks and crannies in a series of rooms of varying sizes that flow into each other. Her favorite accent pieces, she says, are a pedestal that provides a special place for a flower arrangement or sculpture and an obelisk on a coffee table that adds height and focus. The library is an intimate space with a coffered ceiling. “I like mixing up sizes of rooms,” Courland says. At the heart of the house, a step down from the foyer, is a gourmet chef’s kitchen with a barrel ceiling, granite countertops, a large center island and a red sofa and ottoman. “When we have a party, everyone is in here,” she says. A balcony with waterviews wraps the back of the house. Summer dinners in a gazebo at the end of the deck overlook the harbor and, in the distance, Port Washington’s Bar Beach. In the backyard, a waterfall flows from a hot tub into the pool. “That’s what we use the most,” Courland says. The interior designer’s latest projects were massive undertakings: a 12,000 square foot home in Cold Spring Harbor: an 11,000 square foot home in Southampton, a 10,000 square foot Mediterranean villa in Florida and a 10,500 square foot home in Kings Point. She also takes on smaller projects focusing on one special room or projects with tight budgets. Courland sees a “continuing trend towards modernism and more minimal interiors,” especially using new “green” eco-friendly textured wallpapers and fabrics. The trend blends “traditional concepts with a more streamlined look.” SE

For the Ocular-Obsessed

BAUBLE-BEDECKED SHADES HIT THE SUNLIGHT By JIAYANG FAN

Winter is done. The sun is out and spectacles — they are in with a vengeance. Along with strappy stilletos, floral print jumpsuits, and lacquered satin clutches, bauble-bedecked shades count among essential musthaves on both sand and sidewalk. This season, jewelry titans David Yurman and Bvlgari glamorize dependable staples. Silver-plate, gemstone, Austrian crystal and glossy studs dress up classic frames with wit and whimsy. Tiffany delivers timeless uber-feminine spectacles in richly jeweled reinventions of their signature key (to the manor) and hearts (for those intent on soaking up the rays full-time, Tiffany charms round sunglasses come with three sets of charms so you can mix to match your mood.) Feeling quirky? Morgenthal Frederics, a highend haven for the ocular-obsessed, with four Manhattan shops and one at the Americana

Manhasset, offers an eclectic array, from edgycool to lushly decadent; who said titanium and turquoise can’t be a pair? Even if you are low-key chic, boxy doesn’t have to be boring. Tom Ford features architectural frames with an artisanal touch. Gucci’s oversized aviators with tortoise and gold detail invariably wake up any wardrobe. Bentley, Maybach, and Ferrari? In addition to wheels, these world-class automakers serve up the sleek and luxe in miniature. Try on Bentley’s chrome-framed leather goggles (who needs a plane to be a pilot?) Or customize every component of your Maybach (choose from 19 natural horn tones, six fine wood and ten lens tints) to guarantee maximum fashion mileage. Whether you are looking for your inner wild child or content traveling incognito, avoiding the glare or flaunting your brass, wear a pair and say welcome to spring. SE

Beautiful Doors

When is a door more than a door? Like the opening scene of a movie, a door sets the mood for what comes next. Not only does it function to secure and mark off distinct spaces, a door issues an invitation to experience a lifestyle. Dramatic or conservative, classic or ultra-modern, an exterior or interior door can make a polished statement of taste and attention to detail. “In many expensive homes, the aesthetic value of a door gets lost,” explains Aidar Shabaev, President of Bella Porta in Hempstead. (www.bellaporta.com) “Part of our mission is to educate people to take the door as part of a home design. Instead of selecting a stock door from hundreds, we work with each client to help him or her design a custom door.” Like a limited edition print, each door is numbered on a steel plate mounted to the inside door jamb. Bella Porta, whose name means “beautiful door” in Italian, focuses on building quality relationships with clients. “We help with design consulting, sales, installation, support, and maintenance,” says Mr. Shabaev. He personally selects both contemporary and traditional door models, security features, and accessories from a handful of top designers in Italy and Austria. Bella Porta’s collection includes over 300 designs that come in more than 50 wood finishes and more than 210 colors. Hot trends in beautiful doors include, but are not limited to: • Fingerprint security pads make keys obsolete. The new systems can store up to 99 fingerprints. Every print is unique and can’t be copied or lost. • Magnetic locks for interior doors. Without the need for traditional bolts, door handles slim down for a sleek, modern look. To lock or unlock, simply press a bar inside the door handle. • Roto doors for small spaces and closets rotate in either direction. • Furniture quality wood. All doors and door frames are made from specialty solid wood.

• Magic Glass inserts. Italian-manufactured double glass panels with artwork overlapping on both sides creates depth that enhances aesthetics while protecting privacy. • Door frames and accessories. Contemporary European door frames have 90degree squared edges that are complemented by a selection of square-edge handles and accessories. “A door challenges the status quo.” says Shabaev. “It creates a lasting impression.” What do your doors say about you? SCULPTURE GARDENS

Creating Enchanting Landscapes Want to add pizzazz to your garden? Sculptures in outdoor settings make a statement and add beautiful touches to the landscape. Whether it’s a fountain, urn, abstract sculpture, statue or stone gargoyle, decorative pieces help define the outdoor setting all year long. Integrating sculptures into an outdoor setting is hardly a new concept. Sculpture gardens have been around for centuries—often reflecting the esthetics and mores of the culture of which they were a part. Over the years, they were created for religious, symbolic or ornamental purposes. Prominent Romans, for example, put decorative statues in their gardens to create allegories with messages understood within their culture: messages of power, wisdom or culture of the patron. On Long Island’s Gold Coast, sculpture gardens graced many grand estates during the early 20th Century. Extravagant homeowners strove to out-do one another with lavish mansions and gardens to match the grandeur of their lifestyle. At some of these mansions—like the Vanderbilt Estate in Centerport, the Philpps Estate now known as Old Westbury Gardens and the Frick Estate, now the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn —visitors can stroll the grounds to get a feel for what life was like for the privileged few. Sculptures of all sorts and sizes adorn the 145 acres surrounding the Nassau County Museum of Art, including fanciful works by renowned artists such as Fernando Botero, Niki de Saint Phalle, Alexander Calder and Tom Otterness. The interaction of sculptures with the natural environment continues to play an important role in transforming properties into masterpieces. On a deeper level, the sculpture gardens represent an attempt to connect art to the world around us, to create a balance of art and nature. 24 SPRING 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

By Linda SaSLow

Tucked away at private homes throughout the Gold Coast, sculptures— each with their own story, complement homes and gardens, bringing warmth, depth and sometimes whimsy to their landscapes. Spirit Stone: For centuries, the Chinese have believed that a stone made by the earth and formed in the riverbeds is an object of good luck. Holding to that ancient belief, a Long Island homeowner looking to bring good luck to her beautiful new home at the beach sought the help of North Shore Architectural Stone, in Glen Head, to install a two ton “spirit stone” within her garden. Maggie Tanchuck, co-owner of North Shore Architectural Stone, recalled, “To be positioned in the perfect spot, we had to bring it up with a crane, over 30 foot trees, where it now sits proudly as the focal point of the landscape.” Mermaid: The magnificent mermaid has a history that dates back to 1914. Once sitting atop a 20-foot column, side by side with a matching “mer-man,” the mermaid greeted guests at the entrance of a monastery run by Franciscan monks. That was, until she tragically fell off the column and broke her neck. Tanchuck remembers well getting the call to sculpt a new mermaid, copying the original as exactly as possible. The replica was carefully placed back on the column, where she sits proudly today at the former monastery, now a private Gold Coast home. The repaired original mermaid rests comfortably in the Glen Head showroom of North Shore Architectural Stone. Garden Urn: A beautifully arranged garden urn can become the perfect colorful sculpture in a garden. When clients of Paula Aureliano-Leighton tell her that they feel that a sculpture is too formal, she often suggests an urn or planter. Aureliano, the owner and designer of Paul’s Nursery

in Old Brookville, says that an urn can become a great focal point while adding softness and beautiful color to a garden. The plantings can also be changed each season to add the constantly changing interest to a home and garden. Group: This whimsical arrangement of children brings such a smile to all when visiting its home. The homeowners have five children, and this sculpture is a perfect example of adding fun and lightheartedness to a garden. In addition, the antique gazebo became a beautiful focal point in the garden. Reader: Statues are great for any location, emphasized Aureliano, and can be used to help soften areas and materials used in the landscape. The bronze girl reading was perfect to place on top of the stone retaining wall, adding a feeling of relaxation and comfort to this backyard. See-Saw: Sculptures can also initiate motion from a still-life capturing a “forever” photograph. The see-saw sculpture, a bronze piece, was chosen by Aureliano and her client to create a feeling of movement and play in the center of a once empty lawn area. Aureliano explained, “Adding the fine detail of a sculpture like this makes the difference between a good landscape and a great one.”

Female Country Girl: A sculpture can be integrated into an established garden while refining the surrounding details, explained Tim Barry, senior design associate at Dodds & Eder, in Oyster Bay. The pavers and immediate plantings under the country girl work together to enhance her sense of place. As a welcoming addition outside a home office, the country girl often evokes an emotional response from visitors. Red Sculpture: Set in a garden, this contemporary piece introduces a splash of color, set off by a backdrop of evergreen trees and shrubs. The foreground plantings contrast the strong angular lines of the piece, but do not compete with it, Barry said. Steel Sculpture: An important addition to the large residential property, this steel sculpture is surrounded by plantings which change with the seasons, keeping the artwork an exciting focal point all year round, Barry explained, “As the planting are changed, they bring a different context or feeling to the garden throughout the year. During springtime, the sculpture rises above the playful tulips that surround it. Summer annuals, mums and cabbage for the fall, and evergreen boughs during winter keep bring unique seasonal interest.” SE

MANOR HOUSES

Timeless Treasures of the Past There was no more glamorous time in Long Island history than just after the turn of the century into the 1930s. Huge fortunes were being made and wealthy families, seemingly untouched by the depression, built their splendid homes along what has since become known as the Gold Coast. It was a period of prosperity and extravagance, with an elegant lifestyle that one reads about in F. Scott Fitzgerald, including lavish parties, yachting, fox hunts and duck shooting. Some of the most magnificent mansions were built, with outstanding decorative and architectural features and expansive gardens landscaped to complement the homes. Many of these manor houses became favorite retreats for the rich and famous. Today, although most of them have vanished, those that remain are a reminder of the grand era. They are timeless treasures—rich in history and eternally majestic. KENJOCKETY, Lloyd Harbor The moment that Bruce and Paula Rice first stepped inside of Kenjockety in 1983, they both fell in love, and knew that this would be their next home. The 16,000 square foot Tudor mansion on six and a half acres, high on a bluff in Lloyd Neck, with 21 rooms—including seven bed26 SPRING 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

rooms and 10 fireplaces—was then the home of Robin Gibb of the BeeGees, used as a flophouse, painted all white and decorated with ultra-modern furnishings. But with a shared vision, Bruce and Paula knew that they could use their experience and foresight to restore it to its former grandeur. In 1924, noted architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed and built the superb brick waterfront estate with panoramic views of Oyster Bay, Centre Island, Cold Spring Harbor and Long Island Sound to Connecticut. The innovative architect often described as “romantic” and “daring” was well known for helping to revolutionize ecclesiastical architecture. Using old photos to help them recreate every detail of Kenjockety, Bruce and Paula spent the next two years stripping the threestory mansion to transform it into the treasure that it is today. They painstakingly restored the crown moldings, rich oak floors and arched doors throughout their home. The result of their arduous efforts is a replica of the manor house of the 1920s, but with every convenience of modern times. They are especially proud of their restored library, with cherry wood paneling, handsome bookcases and a secret men’s room. When not curling up in front of a fire with a good

book, they spend most of their time in the glass conservatory, appreciating the family room’s glorious views. The conservatory is adjacent to an open kitchen with a center island and top of the line appliances. On the second floor, a superb master suite also enjoys water views overlooking the grounds from its private turreted rooftop terrace. Within the turret is a spiral staircase leading to a pool and garden room. On the third floor, a media room and state-of-the-art exercise room are practical additions to the 21st Century. Paula, an avid horticulturist, also designed several ornamental gardens on the estate, including a secret heart-shaped garden, with greenhouses and meandering garden paths, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the western sunset. Kenjockety, an Indian term for “far from the maddening crowd,” has become just that for Paula and Bruce. But recognizing that Kenjockety was too special to keep to themselves and a perfect venue for entertaining, they have opened its majestic doors to host charity benefits, political fundraisers and a large family wedding. Their passion for their home today is only matched by its rich history. “There is something here greater than our-

selves,” Paula said. “This home is part of American history.” Soon after moving to Kenjockety 27 years ago, Bruce and Paula met Jenny Lawrence, the granddaughter of Marjory Fleming LloydSmith, for whom the house was originally built as a wedding present from her parents. They quickly became friends, and Jenny was eager to share stories of her home’s heritage, along with several scrapbooks of photos. The photos depict the golden days, when her family raised Labrador Retrievers imported from England, and thousands of ducks for release on “shooting days,” a popular recreation in Lloyd Neck in the 1920s. The colorful history of Kenjockety also centered around grand parties with guests who included Marshall Field, Charles Grumman, Morgan Stanley and Albert Einstein, whose escape from Germany was largely due to help from Albert Fleming, Marjory’s father. Over the years, ownership of the manor house changed several times, including the Jesuits, who were responsible for much of its earlier disrepair. But at Kenjockety today, the magic of the past combines with the splendor of the present to create a timeless treasure. SHAWN ELLIOTT | SPRING 2011 27

CHESTNUT HILL, Upper Brookville If you ask Amy Afshari to describe her favorite part of the Upper Brookville manor estate, built in 1912, which has been her home for the past 18 years, she hesitates, not sure where to begin. “It would be the library,” she said thoughtfully. Aside from the charm of a fireplace, wood paneling and stately bookcases, “there’s also a secret door that leads to an ice cream parlor, which was my boys’ favorite room when they were growing up here.” But it’s more than the library that won Amy’s heart. “There’s character in an old home,” she said. “It talks to you.”

Her husband Michael, who found the 14,000 square foot, 21-room estate on eight acres, added, “It reminds me of the grandeur of such an extraordinary period in American history.” The Upper Brookville manor house was originally built on 160 acres for Hope Goddard, heiress to the Goddard fortune, and her new husband, C. Oliver Iselin. Mr. Iselin was a banker, sportsman and famed yachtsman; his bride was a famous beauty, owner of thoroughbred horses and legendary as the first woman to compete as a crew member in the America’s Cup yacht race. She was also known to have humiliated the Grand Duke Michael of Russia in 1900, by beating him at golf.

At the time that Upper Brookville was incorporated as a village in 1932, the village was about to be named Lower Brookville—a fitting name since the heart of the village is down in a valley. But when Mrs. Iselin heard the proposed name, she is said to have haughtily replied, “I refuse to live in ‘lower’ anything. If you must call it something, and I suppose you must, call it Upper Brookville.” For the Afsharis, the journey to their home in Upper Brookville began when Amy became pregnant with their third child, and didn’t have enough bedrooms for a new baby. “I love old houses,” Michael admitted. “When I saw this house for the first time, I fell in love.” But Amy was not so fast to agree. “When Michael told me he had found our dream house, my first reaction was that it was too big,” she recalled. ‘But then I went out to the grounds and turned around to see this majestic house. I could picture our boys playing football on the lawn, and I said to myself, ‘I think I want my family to live here.’” And so they have. During the first week, our youngest son got lost on the third floor,” Amy admitted. Which was not surprising in a home with 11 bedrooms and more than 10 bathrooms. But it didn’t take long for the family to settle into their home, in which each oversized bedroom has its own private bath and hand carved marble fireplace. Fond memories have continued to be created for Amy, Michael and their three sons, now 25, 24 and 19. Of course there were regular football games on the expansive lawns, as well as horseback riding. During the winters, recreational activities moved indoors, often centering around the indoor pool, which was perfect for pool parties. For Amy and Michael, who had heard about the lavish parties given in their home during the 1920s and 30s, it was only fitting that they continue the tradition, eagerly welcoming guests at the estate’s grand entrance gallery, which leads to a palatial ballroom with Tiffany bay windows, large enough for 150 people. For the Afsharis, the lure of a manor house that is almost a century old is multi-faceted. There are legends that accompany their home, like their favorite: that Pia Isadora rode horseback on the grounds, in the nude. Then there are remnants of the 1912 estate, including its original stove, which now serves as a decorative focal point in the midst of their large, modern kitchen. “Every day we still find something new about this house,” Amy said. “One day we discovered a silver safe in the pantry. We also stumbled upon a giant safe in the basement, which we still haven’t opened, because honestly, we’re afraid of what we might find.” SE

GOLD COAST MOVERS AND SHAKERS

GUESS WHAT THEY’RE DRIVING… By LINDA SASLOW

Some say that cars define us—that the make of the car you drive gives insights into your personality. While some people choose their cars for practical reasons—safety, price or fuel consumption—others are more passionate in their selections, sometimes viewing their automobiles as an extension of themselves. There are those who even name their cars, others who attribute emotions to their vehicles. When their car won’t start, they blame it on its stubborn personality. Terms like “powerful,” “angry,” “dominant” and “arrogant” have been associated with those inanimate machines of steel. In 2004, a German study explored the interrelationship of character traits between buyers and their autos, and found that people choose car models that best correspond to their personality features—sending out a message of how they see themselves and how they would like others to perceive them. Like their drivers, cars can be smooth, fast, sleek, perky sluggish, low key, showy, quirky, or sometimes unreliable. Just take a look at what the richest people in the world drive: Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, has been a long-time lover of Porsches, while Warren

Buffett, the second richest man and Bill’s good buddy, owned a 2001 Lincoln Town Car with a license plate that read “Thrifty.” In 2007, he sold the car on eBay for $73,200. The Kelly Blue Book value was $11,200, so the billionaire made yet another profit, and donated the money to a worthy charity. Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle Software, has driven a 2006 Bentley, while Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Ikea and the world’s 4th richest man, owns a 17 year-old Volvo 240GL, and Alice Walton, the Wal-Mart heiress, has driven Porsches, but prefers large trucks. Which wheels do the North Shore’s movers and shakers prefer? Some love motorcycles, others prefer golf carts and pick-up trucks. Jaguars, Porsches, Mercedes and Maseratis get kudos from some high flyers. HighprofileplasticsurgeonSteven Greenberg doesn’t stress over deciding what to drive. His choice is simple: “It’s my Jeep Wrangler by day, and my Porsche by night.” When commuting between his offices in Woodbury and on Park Avenue in Manhattan, Dr. Greenberg, who is also known for his cosmetic plastic surgery fashion shows, opts for his Jeep, which is always reliable, “And I don’t have to worry about

weather or where I can park it.” But on nights and weekends, that’s a different story. “I love my black Porsche convertible,” he said. “It handles well and is fun to drive. For years, I was driving Maseratis, then switched over the Porsches.” And for his next car? He answered, “I think I’ll probably go back to a Maserati.” Gary Melius, owner of Oheka Castle in Huntington, loves to collect old cars, but these days he doesn’t have a need to do much driving. Living and working at the castle, built on the highest point on Long Island, which was the former estate of financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn, Melius admits to having become a homebody. “I used to ride a motorcycle,” he admitted, “But then I grew up.” His current car, a black Mercedes sedan, has 21,000 miles on it after almost three years. It’s not only because he doesn’t have to travel to work, but also “because no one will get in the car with me,” he confessed. “I’m a very good driver, just fast. But when we get ready to go anywhere, everyone refuses to drive with me, so my wife insists on driving and we end up taking her car.” Cars are not very important to restaurateur Rich Cutler, who drives a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with 110,000 miles on its odometer. “For me, a car is just something to throw my stuff in that I need for the restaurants,” said Cutler, who owns Mims in Roslyn and Syosset, Mill Creek Tavern in Bayville, and is now putting the finishing touches on his newest endeavor, Cedar

INGVAR KAMPRAD, THE FOUNDER OF IKEA AND THE WORLD’S 4TH RICHEST MAN, OWNS A 17 YEAR-OLD VOLVO 240GL, AND ALICE WALTON, THE WAL-MART HEIRESS, HAS DRIVEN PORSCHES, BUT PREFERS LARGE TRUCKS.

BILL GATES, THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD, HAS BEEN A LONG-TIME LOVER OF PORSCHES, WHILE WARREN BUFFETT, THE SECOND RICHEST MAN AND BILL’S GOOD BUDDY, OWNED A 2001 LINCOLN TOWN CAR WITH A LICENSE PLATE THAT READ “THRIFTY.”

Creek in Glen Cove, scheduled to open in March. The 10 year-old navy blue Jeep Cherokee was formerly his wife’s car, “And when the lease was up, I just bought it,” he said. “It’s steady and reliable, and one of few cars around that still has a tape player.” Aesthetics are a priority for Deborah Sarnoff, a cosmetic dermatologist and expert on anti-aging techniques, with offices in Greenvale and Manhattan. “I do care about driving a beautiful car, but I’m pretty boring,” Sarnoff said. “I’ve been driving the same car for years, and all I change is the color.” That car is a 4-door Mercedes 350E, with gray the hue of choice for this lease. “It’s reliable and has 4-wheel drive, which is great for commuting in bad weather,” Sarnoff said. Not surprisingly, she refused to get a convertible because of the risk for premature sun damage and skin cancer. The compromise was a sunroof, she revealed. “I love my car,” she said, “But there is a basic difference between boys and girls. If I had to pick between jewelry and cars, I’d choose the jewelry.” For Doug Pierce, owner of Pierce Day Camp, the country’s oldest day camp, which is celebrating its 94th year in business, a golf cart is the vehicle of choice during the summer camp season, when he can be seen driving around the grounds to greet campers and make sure that everything is running smoothly. But when he leaves the premises, Pierce hops into his Dodge pick-up Truck, a perfect vehicle for picking up camp supplies or escaping for a weekend to the Berkshires. Then there’s his one little indulgence: a Mercedes 550 SL convertible. “I work hard, and I play hard,” Pierce admitted. “I’ve had eight or nine Mercedes, and they’re great cars. This is my one little treat to myself.” Over the past 30 years, Robert Byalick has had 22 cars. “I’ve always loved cars,” said the psychologist, whose private practice is in Roslyn Heights. “Growing up in a poor family, I always looked up to anyone who had a car. When I got my first car, a 1964 Plymouth Ford Fury convertible, it

made me feel immediately successful and optimistic.” After driving Porsches, Corvettes, BMWs and Audis, Dr. Byalick recently stepped into his newest auto: a navy blue Jaguar XF. “I think it’s the finest looking car on the road,” he said. “When I am driving it, I feel like I am luxuriating, and I want everybody to see me.” Cars are the fourth on the list for Richie Kirschenbaum, who owns 10 Shoe Box stores— including five on Long Island. “First, I love shoes and women, and of course, my kids,” he said. As for cars, “Sure, I enjoy them,” said the entrepreneur, who owns three. “I love my Porsche Carrera, but my wife has first possession of it,” he confessed. “It’s her baby, but I like to steal it from her when she lets me.” On those days when he doesn’t get first pick, Kirschenbaum makes do driving to work in his black Mercedes sports convertible. After all, he said, “I’ve had it for 25 years, and it’s still a great car.” From his very first car—a 1960 T-bird that he bought and re-built, Mark Stumer has always loved cars...and motorcycles. These days, the notable architect and partner with Mojo Stumer Architects, which specializes in high end contemporary design, rotates his driving time among his three cars: a blue Porsche Cayenne SUV for every day driving, a white Porsche 911 Turbo convertible for weekends and summer days, and his prize possession: a brown Jaguar XKE, reserved for warm, sunny and totally dry days, which he’s owned for more than 30 years. Vanity plates on any of his cars? That would be a definite NO. “I love my cars,” Stumer said, “but I would never

have vanity plates.” Robert Beer is fast to admit that he’s a car freak, and has been for all of his life. “Actually, I’m a horsepower freak,” said the builder and entrepreneur, known for high-end single family homes and his retail projects: Nisen of Woodbury, Nisen Sushi in Commack, and Red Mango in Wheatley Plaza—with three other Red Mangos scheduled to open over the next few months. “I’m a grounded person,” Beer said, “But I live fast and I like to get where I have to go fast.” It may come as no surprise that his newest car is a white 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia—one of four cars that he owns. Perhaps his favorite among his collection is his black 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, with an 850 horsepower engine that he re-built himself. Robert Zimmerman spends a lot of time in his car. “So, I have to feel good about what I drive,” said the television political commentator and partner in Zimmerman-Edelson, a well known Long Island public relations and marketing firm. Although not a car aficionado, Zimmerman admits that he’s excited about the metallic dark green Jaguar XJ that he just ordered, due to arrive in April. It’s a perfect set of wheels in which to attend social events, to travel to Manhattan and out to the Hamptons. With a great sound system and a small back seat, he said, “It’s big enough to accommodate my friends, but not for being a chauffeur service.” And while Zimmerman has changed cars, not so with his license plate, which is still the same one (though he declined to disclose that for security purposes) that he’s had since high school! SIT BACK, RELAX and PASS THE POPCORN

By LAURIE NADEL

It should come as no surprise that the latest flat screen televisions with 3-D capability, high-tech audio, internet connectivity and Wii games are spawning a new movement in luxury home design. The latest ne plus ultra for the home owner who has everything is an inner sanctum dedicated to the highest level of audio and video quality on the market: an Oscar-worthy home theater with ultra-comfortable, luxurious seating that renders the local multiplex obsolete. “Today, a five to six-thousand square foot custom house on Long Island must have a dedicated home theater,” says Robert Kaufman, President of Audio Command Systems in Westbury. Mr. Kaufman’s team of designers and technical engineers works hand-in-hand with each client to take his dream from the concept stage to reality—a process that can take as long as two years. “The audio quality here reproduces the sound quality that the movie director heard and wanted on the set. You get to experience what the director saw, heard, and felt,” says a homeowner in Port Washington whose private theater is encased in 18-inch walls layered with plywood and exotic materials to cushion the room’s sound so that bang-bang! crash! and kaboom! soundtracks can play at high volume without being heard anywhere else in the house. The floor of the home theater is suspended on thousands of cups to further absorb transient sound. In addition to housing his cable box and electrical gear, an equipment closet contains a customdesigned power panel with a 200-lb. magnet that sucks all transient sound from LIPA’s electrical lines. When the screen and audio system are silent, the 34 SPRING 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

lack of transient sound makes it possible to have an intimate conversation here without any echo. “The acoustician calls it ‘a happy room,’” the homeowner says. Having built an extension onto the back of his home to create his dream entertainment environment, he no longer has any desire to go to a movie theater. With four electronic Transformer ™ reclining seats—at $4,000 per chair--Art Deco wall sconces of Murano glass and French gold, a stateof-the-art projection system and cinema screen identical to the one in Radio City Music Hall, the experience of watching movies, TV, or concerts here surpasses anything at the local cinema. The homeowner observes, “There’s a social movement now called cocooning. Home is now a destination. This is the future of entertainment.” Robert Kaufman, whose company offices extend to the Hamptons, Los Angeles, Boca Raton, and Miami, agrees. “When it comes to home entertainment centers, there is no limit to what you can create. Some people have both fully dedicated home theaters and a high-end home entertainment center in a family room or den,” he says. “Others opt for an open space with one or more flat-screen TV’s.” Whether it’s a 6,400-square foot media center and gym like the one Tiger Woods built in his Jupiter Island bachelor crib or a “man cave” lined with flat-screen TV’s where a guy and some friends can watch a few games simultaneously while shooting pool, a home entertainment center can function as a gathering place for large groups or a private retreat where you can tune out the rest of the world. For those who value perfection and privacy, the ultimate value of investing in your own state-of-the-art

a unique theatre that the client’s whOle Family can enjOy.

theater is, well, priceless. Kal Smith, senior sales consultant of Home Theater Design Center in Manhasset notes that since 2008, there has been a drop-off in demand for dedicated custom theaters. He says, “Today, people are looking to invest in a media entertainment center as a space that the family can use.” According to a 2010 survey conducted by the Custom Electronic Design Industry Association (CEDIA) “electronic systems contractors reported that home theater and media room projects were among the core components of their business,” representing 24% of their business in 2009. That shows a three percent drop from the 2008 Benchmarking Survey which showed that home theaters and media rooms represented 27% of their business in 2007. In the last quarter of 2010, Smith reported that business started picking up again. “People are coming out of their shells,” he said. Regardless of whether the home entertainment center is an open space next to the kitchen accessible to family and friends or a fully dedicated theater, Smith points out that the big draw is the same: “People are investing in amazing large flat-panel 3-D screens with great picture and audio quality that can be controlled from any part of the house with an iPad. You can push an icon, control the lighting and simultaneously lower a motorized blackout screen in the other room.” Joe Calise, president of Sight – N – Sounds in Seaford noted the “growing trend towards streaming media and downloadable content.” Calise predicts that “physical content” such as DVDs, is “going away quickly, as happened in the music industry. The tide is also shifting when it comes

to multi-room audio systems. They are very different than they were five years ago, thanks to digital media. Streaming audio and video systems are easier to use now and there are many to choose from.” The newest generation of digital remote control systems is revolutionizing the way home theater systems are designed. Instead of costing five to six thousand dollars for a customized touch-screen control panel system, a $500 iPad can be programmed to control all the entertainment, lighting, and security systems in the house. You do not even have to be in the house to adjust the lighting and cue up the movie you want to watch. It can all be done from your iPhone. Another cost benefit of digitalized remote systems for home entertainment centers is the elimination of the need for expensive cabinetry. “The old trend was to build a cabinet under each television for a cable box and DVD player. The new trend of streaming video and Netflix means that expensive cabinetry is no longer needed. Consumers can save a lot of space and reinvest the money saved on cabinetry into new technology,” says Scott Boxenhorn, President of IDS Audio/Video and Technologies in Roslyn. He estimates that between 20 to 25 percent of what would have been spent on custom cabinets is now invested to remote the equipment. Another space-saver is a custom sound bar installed below the flat-screen TV which renders the sub-woofer and main speaker invisible. Instead of cluttering up the space, the remaining four speakers—two front, two rear—needed for a surround-sound environment can be installed behind the walls, thereby freeing up room for Wii or X-Box 360 activities or additional reclining seats. With such a wide range of custom features, costs can range from $5,000 for a basic home entertainment center to north of one million dollars. According to Boxenhorn, expect to spend at least $25,000 for an automated home entertainment system that includes television, music, security, lighting, heating, and cooling. Smith estimates that a full custom home theater would cost approximately $120,000. According to Kaufman, “A great dedicated home theater can cost between $50,000 and $200,000.” But a serious movie buff or audiophile may not be satisfied with anything that modest. Kaufman put it this way: “Like the guy who wants the fastest car in the world, there’s no limit to what you can spend if you want your home theater experience to be out of this world.” SE

WINDOW DRESSING: Controlling the Light

BEFORE

Floor to ceiling windows may add drama to a home, but sometimes sun-glare, heat and privacy can be problematic. Arched windows above a front door illuminating a two-story foyer can be hard to reach or lose pizzazz if covered by blinds or curtains. Light bouncing off a pool can glare and overheat a room. At certain times of day, skylights can let too much sun in. Enter E-Green, or “electronic glass,” a new glazing technology developed on the North Shore, that allows users to control the glare, heat gain and ensure privacy at the touch of a button. “It eliminates having to use curtains, mechanical blinds and shades,” says Steve Abadi, the inventor and chief executive and founder of Innovative Glass, a family- run business in Plainview. “We achieve this by building the glass with an electronic film laminated in the middle of the glass. When you apply electricity to the film or the glass, it changes state,” and darkens or brightens a room. Millions of nanospheres or particles suspended in the film scatter the light. When the electricity is switched on, “the molecules line up like soldiers in perfect rows, allowing the light and vision to pass through.” When the power is switched off, “the particles go back to a random position and that darkens the view,” Abadi explains. The special glass can be used in media rooms, bathrooms, front entry doors and rooms with waterviews. It is also used in conference rooms for privacy at meetings and in intensive care units in hospitals and emergency rooms. Nurses, for instance, are able to monitor patients by switching the glass from private to clear. There are no moving parts or anything that can wear out, Mr. Abadi says of the green technology. “Think of it as mini blinds within your glass. If the blinds are turned on edge you can see right through.” Like transition lenses, “when the sun is very

AFTER

strong on the hottest day, the glass can automatically darken to keep the sun out,” he continues. “When the sun moves to the other side of the house, the glass can go clear again.” There is also a manual override. One of the byproducts of E-Green is energy efficiency, because power isn’t needed to darken the glass, and the amount of electricity used to turn it clear is miniscule. Meanwhile, rooms don’t get overheated and the load on the air conditioning is reduced, Mr. Abadi says. The product can be used with new Anderson, Marvin and other window brands, or retrofitted to existing windows with special panels. Abadi, an inventor, electronics designer and product developer, has been working on the smart glass that tints, shades and turns private for 25 years. Along the way, he received several patents and owns proprietary technology. When manufacturing the product became cost effective eight years ago, he started Innovative Glass, marketing to architects worldwide. Business has increased 20 percent every year since, though it was flat during the downturn. About 25 homes on Long Island have the E glass along with hundreds worldwide. The E-Green, he says, “was the natural evolution to the smart home “ he was developing 40 years ago. Abadi claims he developed the “first whole house multi-function remote control system,” long before the invention of the universal remote. “I could control the lighting, the audio, the video but I couldn’t control the glass,” he recalls. Wanting to have “complete control of everything in the house” he had “an epiphany” and came up with the idea of electronic liquid crystal privacy glass. Geared toward the discriminating client, EGreen doesn’t come cheap. A two by five foot window runs about $1500 to $2000; a larger

window could be as much as $8000. “This is very, very clean,” Abadi says. “It is very, very slick and it gives you the coolest windows on the block.” Two different technologies are available: LC Privacy Glass allows the user to instantly switch from clear to fully private, frosted white -- perfect for bathrooms, where blinds and shades tend to get wet, musty and dirty and need to be maintained. Installed in the panels flanking a front entry, LC Privacy Glass adds privacy and security. At Abadi’s home, the panels to each side of his front door are usually frosted. When he wants to see who is at the door, he pushes a button. The glass clears for five seconds, turns back to frosted. The benefit is instant: “If you don’t want the solicitor, you ignore him,” Abadi says. SE Innovative Glass, (516) 777-1100

GRAND VELAS RIVIERA NAYARIT

AZURE WATERS ON MEXICO’S GOLD COAST The Baileys on the rocks just kept coming. Eager to please despite the hot midday sun, the waiters kept circling as I lounged by the pool engrossed in a novel at the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, a splendid, high end all-inclusive beach resort and spa in Nuevo Vallarta, on the west coast of Mexico. I didn’t need to budge. I just sipped, flipped the page, and smiled as my next drink arrived, accompanied this time by a snack of yummy quesadillas con queso and a scoop of guacamole. Grand Velas, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, is the kind of luxurious beachfront palace that you want to return to again and again. When snowstorms are blanketing New York in winter, at Grand Velas warm, sunny weather is nearly guaranteed. For some the lure might be the plentiful activities -- from deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, sailing, swimming with dolphins, parasailing and whale watching on Banderas Bay to bullfights, canopy tours, golfing on seven spectacular courses or shopping along Puerto Vallarta’s El Malecon, a mile-long boardwalk that follows the beach and main street downtown. I loved it -- two years in a row -- because it is a perfect spot to relax and unwind, nap on a wellcushioned lounge chair under a beach umbrella, doing absolutely nothing, in haute style. Okay, I’ll admit it: I occasionally took leisurely swims in the triple- tiered pools to the swim-up bar for a refreshing pina colada. Accommodations are deluxe. The 267 oceanfront one, two and three bedroom suites, starting at 1,000 square feet, are spacious and well appointed with contemporary furnishings and have views of the pool, gardens and ocean views. The marble baths

are exquisite and oversized, with separate showers and tubs. And on the balconies, where one of my three sons sometimes often slumbered under a starstudded sky to the rocking sounds of the ocean, are double-sized mattress lounge beds. Many mornings on our two-week sojourn during the Christmas holidays, after a plentiful smorgasbord breakfast at Azul, the resort’s casual oceanfront restaurant, my family and I went bicycle riding around the neighborhood 20 minutes south of better known, and more seasoned Puerto Vallarta. Afternoons I walked the beach, stopping to check out the trinkets, pottery and blankets at a makeshift seaside

By M.C. SUSSMAN “tienda” or the silver jewelry hawked by strolling vendors. By five p.m., having earlier worked out in the resort’s well-equipped gym, the kids headed for the tennis courts. My days were not complete without a trip to the luxe spa for a ritual massage and pampering, starting with a plunge in the hot and cold water lagoons, a schvitz in the crystal steam room, a dousing in the Swiss shower and -- totally exhausted -- a schnooze on a well-cushioned lounge chair. The spa offers 80 different treatments from body wraps to facials and has 20 treatment rooms. Each visit ends with a treat: a daily goody bag with small flower-shaped candles. A notch above many all inclusive resorts, the a la carte restaurants at Grand Velas offer artful dining in tranquil settings. Gourmet Mexican cuisine is on the menu at Frida; Lucca offers a choice of Italian-Mediterranean dishes like sea bass or veal ossobucco over risotto and handmade cannelloni stuffed with spinach and ricotta. Our family’s favorite dinner spot, Piaf, has a traditional gourmet French menu, with escargot, Chateaubriand with Bearnaise sauce and Dover Sole. And not to be missed warm, luscious chocolate souffles or creme brulee. Long after I’ve returned home, thoughts of the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit leave a smile on my face. The breathtaking vistas, the fluffy beach towels, the accommodating service and glorious sunshine. This lovely, spacious resort, with its red Mediterraneanstyle roof and tiered stories bedecked with deep pink bougainvillias, graces a pristine cove by the azure waters of Banderas Bay on Mexico’s gold coast. It’s a pleasure to behold and a relaxing vacation spot that is hard to beat. SE SHAWN ELLIOTT | SPRING 2011 41

Quick Takes On Our Favorite Chinese Restaurants IT’S NOT JUST TAKEOUT ANYMORE By M.C. SUSSMAN PHILIPPE CHOW JERICHO 399 Jericho Turnpike (516) 605-2555 White orchids decorate the window ledges at Philippe Chow, the Chinese restaurant that opened next to a gas station in Jericho last fall, adding to its outposts in Manhattan, Miami, East Hampton, West Hollywood and Mexico City. Spare and chic, red leather banquettes provide seating along the walls; the floor is painted black wood. White wood planking and beams line the main dining room ceiling. Except for a few orchidshaped sconces, the walls are unadorned. A glittery, noisy A-crowd packs the place, indulging cravings for upscale, pricey Chinese, and to see and be seen. Service was quick on a recent visit; our appetizers arrived almost instantaneously. Our waiter insisted we sample the chicken satay, skewers of chicken that had been marinated for 24 hours in carrots (hence their orange color) and dipped in a creamy peanut sauce. But at $29 for two, we passed on the tempting Maine lobster spring rolls . Instead, our waiter gallantly spooned bits of chopped chicken, mushrooms and squash onto leaves of iceberg lettuce for make-your-own wraps. Messy? Not to worry. Warm washcloths were offered between courses. For the main dish, honors went to the crispy sweet and sour Alaskan halibut and house mignon. Another fine selection: Beijing chicken, with walnuts in brown sauce. Seating is also available in the oh-so-cool and dark wine cellar, stacked with the red and the white, and for diners who don’t want to miss a game, a large flat screen TV. Dessert goes far beyond your typical Chinese fortune cookie and a slice of orange. The molten chocolate cake with a scoop of caramel ice cream was luscious. The fresh fruit plate of kiwi, pineapple, cantaloupe and red and green grapes was a surprise delight, as were the scoops of red and green grape sorbet. Perhaps the waiter just wanted to sweeten us up before he delivered the check. 42 SPRING 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

PEARL EAST 1191 Northern Blvd, Manhasset (516) 605-2555

HUNAN TASTE 3 Northern Blvd, Greenvale (516) 621-6616

Even with reservations, diners wait seven days a week for a white tablecloth-covered table at Pearl East in Manhasset, the glamorous Chinese restaurant on Northern Blvd. That’s because the pan Asian menu, including both traditional Chinese and the latest in Japanese fare, including Sushi, is always reliable. The dishes are artistically arranged, a pleasing palette for the palate. Or as one diner said in a Zagat review, “The best Chinese take-out this side of Shanghai or least on the north shore of Nassau County.” It’s not just the food. Pearl East also has the most sophisticated atmosphere, with a marble foyer, decorative art pieces and finelyappointed dining room. For starters, try the lettuce wraps with chopped chicken, water chestnuts, scallions and pine nuts as well as the barbecue spare ribs. The dim sum sampler with chicken, lobster, vegetable and seafood dumplings is a perennial winner. The miso-glazed black cod melts in your mouth and is accompanied by string beans. According to our waiter, Ivan, among the most popular dishes are whole lobster Cantonese-style, Ying and Yang Shrimp with honey brown sauce, sesame crusted Chilean sea bass with black bean sauce, blackened tuna with honey wasabi sauce and skirt steak with teriyaki and baby bok choy. On the Japanese menu, the sushi rocks. The Snow Mountain roll has eight pieces of spicy yellowtail and yellow tuna. The Caterpillar roll is shrimp tempura topped with kiwi and mango sauce. Another winner: The Green Lobster roll, with lobster, avocado and tempura crunch wrapped in green soy paper.

You might not get a ticket stub in the tiny parking lot at Hunan Taste, though it’s usually packed. Whether you are there to pick up takeout or eat-in, chances are the valet remembers your Lexus. Inside this popular restaurant, service is outstanding and the staff is just as friendly. Or as one reviewer described it, Hunan Taste is like a “North Shore country club” with diners flitting from table to table to say hello and chat with friends, A neighborhood institution, families dine here week after week, year after year, savoring the consistently good if slightly pricey, Chinese basics. For starters, share the Har Gow (four shrimp dumplings), scallion pancakes and some egg rolls. The Peking Duck roasted, with skins and meat skillfully carved and served with finely sliced scallions and hoisin sauce in crepes is a classic, as is the crispy General Tso’s Chicken sauteed with hot pepper in a spicy tangy sauce. Another spicy choice is the hot beef shredded with carrots and celery. For fish lovers, steamed Chilean Seabass, topped with ginger and scallion sauce and served with bok choy, is a sure bet. The tofu with Chinese mushrooms with snap peas satisfies the vegetarian palate. The menu also includes low carb, gluten free dishes like wok-grilled chicken with vegetables and oil free light cuisine including steamed jumbo shrimp with seasonal vegetables, served with the chef’s brown sauce on the side. Italian Renaissance in Flower Hill

By M.C. SUSSMAN

From a commanding spot on a hilltop at the end of a most desirable Flower Hill cul- de -sac stands a stately brick colonial of more than 9,200 square feet on 1.68 acres. Built in 2004, the mansion has six bedrooms and six and a half baths. Embellished with breathtaking details, the mansion’s eye-popping wow factor starts the moment the wood double entry doors open onto an opulent Italian Renaissance-style grand foyer, with a white Carrera marble and marble inlay floor and a glittering chandelier suspended from a hand-painted rotunda. Along the dramatic double bridal staircase three-dimensional gold leaf carvings are framed by extravagant moldings. The Sistine-chapel feeling continues in the dining room, with a hand-painted mural on one wall and a hand-painted and stenciled ceiling with heavily decorated beams forming an oval around a sparkling Baccarat chandelier. French doors with Italian grillwork lead from 44 SPRING 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

the grand foyer to the Tuscan farmhouse- style family room, with its large stone fireplace and hand-finished stucco mixed with straw walls. Antique wood ceiling beams that came from an old church add character to the ceiling. Past a brick archway to one side is a gourmet chef’s kitchen with an elegant stove, coffered ceiling, granite countertops, wood cabinetry and a separate butler’s pantry illuminated with twin chandeliers. A large breakfast room has French doors leading to the patio and pool beyond. To the other side of the family room is a woodpaneled library/office. The formal living room is off to one side of the grand foyer, but also accessible from the family room via an Italianate archway. Upstairs, the elegant master suite includes a gas fireplace in the bedroom, a sitting room with a balcony, a spa bathroom with steam shower, Jacuzzi and double vanities, and room-sized his and her closets. There are also two other master-

sized bedroom suites upstairs, two bedrooms that share a Jack and Jill bath, and a spacious laundry room. The sixth family bedroom, now being used as a playroom, is on the first floor, In the terraced backyard, an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven are situated under a wisteriacovered pergola. The focal point of this playground geared towards outdoor entertaining is an in-ground pool with a spillover hot tub. In another seating area across the patio is a fire pit. Downstairs might best be described as the perfect man cave. It includes a poker table, a billiards room with a glass-walled wine cellar, batting cage, dry sauna and well-equipped gym. There are also staff quarters and a second laundry room on the lower level. The house has its own generator and a deep three-door garage that can accommodate four to six cars. A Spectacular THE GOOD LIFE

FALL LAUNCH

It was a dark and stormy night with wind-whipped rains. But a nor’easter wasn’t enough to deter 1,100 revelers from turning out for the spectacular launch party of Shawn Elliott Luxury’s Fall issue at Ferrari Maserati of Long Island’s striking new 22,000 square foot glass-walled showroom. With the red carpet again rolled out, it was the perfect setting for the who’s who of the North Shore to gather. The fabulous event also celebrated the one-year anniversary of the well-received magazine, which quickly and perfectly captured the spirit of the Gold Coast.

By M.C. SUSSMAN

As music from electric guitarist Lorenzo LaRoc along with a D.J. pulsated throughout the two-story car palace, partygoers sipped wine, mingled and oohed and aahhed over Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island owner Stuart Hayim’s breathtaking collection of the finest luxury and exotic cars in bright hues like fire engine red and banana yellow along with classics like black and white. On the first level, partygoers played roulette and blackjack at a casino set up to benefit the American Cancer Society. Upstairs, guests checked out

more fabulous cars and relaxed in the elegantly appointed living room model set up by Ritz-Carlton Residences, North Hills, previewing the private, exclusively residential luxury condominium enclave with 244 units soon to be built on the North Shore. Sumptuous hors d’oeuvres were passed, paparazzi clicked away and another awesome Shawn Elliott LUXURY bash was the talk of the Gold Coast. SE

Title Insurance Knowing what isn’t covered is just as important as knowing what is. • Before you allow someone else to order title on your behalf, remember, you are in control of what you buy and who you buy it from. You will be paying the bill, not the person who may want to choose a title company for you. • Not all title fees are the same. Homebuyers who order title themselves may pay hundreds of dollars less than those who allow others to order title for them. • Luxury clears property titles quickly and completely. Luxury also offers the peace of mind which comes from knowing that their work is backed by an insurance policy from America’s largest title insurers.

THE GOOD LIFE

Go Ahead, Indulge

THE LATEST SCOOP ON FROZEN DESSERTS: Tasty yogurts, light ice creams, gelato and glaces “as healthy as you want it to be.” By SUSAN MORRIS NOVICK

It wasn’t long ago when sitting down with a spoon and a pint of ice cream was a kind of cinematic shorthand for reckless over-indulgence. Ice cream, with all its fat, sugar and calories, was comfort food as guilty pleasure. Not anymore. Thanks to an array of healthful frozen yogurts, glaces, light ice creams and gelatos, you can satisfy your sweet tooth without sacrificing your waistline. At new frozen dessert shops on the North Shore like Red Mango, Baci Gelato, D’Lites and 16 Handles, old-fashioned ice cream parlors have been replaced by stylish, order-at-the-counter cafés where you can have your cake (a la mode) and eat it too. “People on the North Shore are very health-conscious,” said Robert Beer, of Brookville, the owner of Red Mango in Greenvale. Noting the number of high-end health clubs here, Mr. Beer bet that Red Mango’s signature frozen yogurt – nonfat, all-natural, gluten-free and certified kosher – would be well-received. One year after it opened, the Greenvale store was named the #1 Red Mango franchise in the country, based on annual sales. Mr. Beer, president of RB Shore Development, as well as the owner of Nisen Sushi (in Woodbury and Commack), opened another Red Mango in Manhasset on April 2. A Rego Park location is set to open midMay and Lake Success on July1. The Red Mango chain began in South Korea in 2002, and features frozen yogurt enriched with probiotic cultures, containing live bacteria, that give it digestive health benefits and a distinctive, tangy flavor. Flavors like pomegranate, citrus-based tangomonium and Madagascar vanilla yogurts are served alongside an extensive toppings bar, which includes fresh berries, mango, Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips and granola. Parfaits, shakes, smoothies, protein shakes and probiotic iced teas round out the menu. “It’s all healthy stuff and the kids love it too. Not only are they getting protein from the yogurt, they’re getting a nice dose of fiber and anti-oxidants from the fruit,” said Mr. Beer. At the new Baci Gelato café in Albertson, there is a changing selection of 24 flavors of gelato, each with less than 8% butterfat and lower in sugar than traditional ice

cream. With a relatively low dairy content, gelato flavors are bright and intense. Hazelnut, rich espresso and caramel are favorites, said co-owner Doron Bensusan of Manhattan. Housemade sorbets, like refreshing mango and pucker-inducing lemon, are made entirely of fruit, water and sugar. Several of the gelatos and sorbets are soy-based, yogurt-based or sugar-free for those on restricted diets. Baci Gelato’s on-premise kitchen services a wholesale gelato business that includes clients like the Waldorf-Astoria and the Pierre Hotel. But the cafe itself, outfitted with white and stainless steel café tables, feels like a neighborhood café, with a menu of made-to-order crepes and a display of low-calorie, bite-size gelato popsicles to grab and go. If you’re looking for an ice cream-based diet, D’Lites in Woodbury has got it on the menu. The 29 year-old national chain began in Florida but has only recently arrived on Long Island with soft-serve, light ice creams that are low in fat, calories, sugar, sodium and carbohydrates. D’Lites ice cream is kosher, and cholesterol- and gluten-free. Dr. Todd Coven and his fiancé Magda Abt, both of Centerport, first discovered D’Lites in Aventura, Florida several years ago. “I have diabetes and my fiancé has celiac disease. It was the one product we could eat every day,” said Dr. Coven. “Whenever I landed in Florida, I would always go right to get the ice cream. I was addicted to it.” In 2010, Dr. Coven brought D’Lites to New York. To his surprise, the Woodbury store sold out of ice cream on its opening weekend. “People come in and order quarts and quarts of it to last them the week,” said Dr. Coven. There are plans to open additional stores in Greenvale, Babylon, Commack and Bayside in coming months. D’Lites offers a rotating selection of 150 soft-serve flavors, 8 each day, including

classics like vanilla and chocolate, as well as signature flavors like Texas peanut butter, York peppermint patty and chocolatecovered strawberry. As for the ice cream-based diet, Dr. Coven claims that you can lose up to 20 lbs in 30 days. For breakfast, consume two 4 fluid-oz. servings of D’Lite, two more servings for lunch, and a 1000-calorie balanced meal for dinner. At 50 calories for a 4 oz. serving and 100 calories for an ice cream sandwich, results may be well within reach. At the pink and green 16 Handles cafe in Jericho, the frozen yogurt is self-serve, as are the 40 different toppings on display, so you can control your own portion size. Collect a cup and make your way down the line of 16 handles, pulling a different flavor from each of the yogurt machines, taking as much or as little as you’d like. A rotating menu of more than 25 flavors includes white chocolate macadamia, cake batter, pistachio and raspberry tart. All yogurts are probiotic and kosher; most are nonfat and gluten free as well. There are nondairy sorbets and “no sugar added” chocolate and vanilla. The yogurts at 16 Handles are creamy and sweet, perhaps a bit less tangy than other yogurts. “You totally forget it’s nonfat,” said Scott Silverman of Old Westbury, one of the owners. “It’s so good it tastes like a custard.” The toppings bar features seasonal fruits like strawberries, bananas and kiwi on one side and decidedly non-dietetic gummy bears, marshmallows and milk hazelnut crunch on the other. “The adults hang out on the right with the berries and the healthy stuff, while the kids are busy piling on the gummy bears and rainbow sprinkles on the left,” said Mr. Silverman. A new 16 Handles store is set to open in Port Washington this spring, showcasing its creamy frozen yogurt, as healthy as you want it to be. SE
