In this issue, we’ve expanded our profiles section to include an Architect’s Vision, along with our well-received Builder Showcase and Designer Spaces columns. Our first architect, Bernard J. Austin, is both a newcomer to the local architecture scene and an old timer: after years on the West Coast, the Lloyd Harbor native recently opened a Locust Valley office of the top-ofthe-line architectural firm Harrison Design Associates. Headquartered in Atlanta, Harrison also has offices in Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, Shanghai and Washington, D.C. Austin is dedicated to designing the best of the best in our own backyard. They will have everlasting beauty.” hood within the Herricks school district, on land that was formerly a vegetable farm, which he purchased from the 95 year-old farmer, subdivided and built six modern colonial houses. He and sold them for between $600,000 and $780,000 each. From then on, Mayourian was unstoppable throughout the North Shore of Nassau County, he recalled with a chuckle. “I picked up lots that other builders were afraid to touch because they had problems or needed special attention,” he said. “Many times different governmental agencies became involved and the process was very complicated.” But not too complicated for Mayourian. Over the last decade, his projects have ranged from the highest end luxury homes, to mid-size twofamily houses, to starter homes and rentals. Whether building a custom 8,000 square foot Italian villa or a 2,400 square foot starter home,

Mayourian is proud of his colonial style homes with details that make them unique. He compared the spectrum of options among his homes to buying a Mercedes. “You can choose the top 550 model, or opt for a less expensive model,” he explained. “But in any Mercedes, all of the fine details are still there.” Building a home is much more complicated than putting together pieces of wood, Mayourian emphasized. “There are so many different ingredients that go into making a home appealing to the eye. When I build a home, my two top priorities are the floor plan and the exterior view of the house. Each home within a neighborhood has its own character, but there must be harmony among them.” The unifying theme among all of his homes is their colonial style. “One might be a Tudor, another a French chateau or an Italian villa,

and each has its own attitude,” he said. “But while ideas and tastes change, colonials will be appreciated today, and 100 years from now. They have everlasting beauty.” One of Mayourian’s proudest accomplishments is Boxwoods Way, in Manhasset, a neighborhood of six luxury homes between 5,000 and 8,000 square feet, which he considers architectural masterpieces. “People drove around taking pictures of those homes,” he recalled. “That really put us on the map.” Today, even in a challenging housing market, Mayourian has a number of ongoing projects and has become a master of juggling his various companies, along with his time and attention. On any given day, he may travel from Kings Point, where he is building a new subdivision of nine luxury homes on two to five acre lots, to

Glen Cove, where he just won approval to build nine homes, to Roslyn Harbor, where three high end homes will be built backing up to Engineers Golf Club, and on to Bayville, where he has just started building one house. “Being a builder is my passion,” Mayourian explained. “There’s such a feeling of accomplishment and creation. When you start with a piece of property and nothing is there, you go through all of the challenges to subdivide and are finally able to put a foundation on virgin ground. You are creating something for families to enjoy for years and years. I feel that pride with each house, whether it’s large or small.” As for the largest house he has built, it’s his own home in Brookville, where he lives with his wife Melissa and their three children, now nine, six and five. ernard Austin brings a unique perspective to his architectural portfolio. Raised on the Gold Coast, he is a son of Bernadette Castro, the former Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and former CEO of Castro Convertibles, the megamillions pullout sofa company. Bernard grew up at Panfield, a grand 18 room, 15 bath, stucco English Tudor-style mansion on five acres overlooking Lloyd Harbor built in 1915 for Albert Milbank, the first mayor of the village. As a boy, Bernard liked to catapult paper airplanes into the eyepopping chandelier in the foyer. He developed an early appreciation for functional design: the upstairs bedroom doors have transom windows allowing for cross ventilation in the summer; the carved stone fireplaces in each room were used for heat when he was growing up. In high school shop class, Bernard developed a fondness for building furniture. But it wasn’t until his formal education in architecture began that he started to notice the incredible details that helped make the home purchased by his grandfather, Bernard Castro, so special, from the soaring 23-foot ceilings in the massive entrance hall and the intricately carved plaster ceiling and beam detailing in the living room to the wood paneling and barrel ceiling in the banquetsized dining room. After graduating from the Portledge School and Cold Spring Harbor High School, Bernard headed to Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where he met his wife, Alexandria. He went on to earn a Masters degree in architecture at the University of Oregon. After a brief stint working in Oyster Bay, the Austins settled in Santa Barbara. “At the time it felt right to forge out on our own,” he said. Working for a sole practitioner, he specialized in stately high-end residential design, particularly Spanish colonial and Mission Revival style homes. Not long after, Bill Harrison of Atlanta-based Harrison Design Associates teamed up with his boss. Bernard served as a lead project manager with the founding principal on significant projects from Los Angeles to Bend, Oregon. “Suddenly being connected to a firm from the Southeast concentrating on “very traditional, classical design, he was “flooded” with remind-

ers of Long Island, he said, with uncompromising dedication to quality, authentic detailing and the use of fine materials that last for generations. “What we do as a firm that is very unique is we really try to understand the historic precedents regardless of the style of architecture and take a real honest, severe approach to that,” he said. When the opportunity arose, Bernard headed home. In January, he opened a branch of Harrison Design Associates in Locust Valley and, at age 36, with his wife and four children, moved back into his mother’s home.

Reconnecting with the local architectural and building community, Bernard said he is getting “a quick introduction into who the local artisans are who do this high end quality work” and the “trades that take the historic restorations and references seriously. “ New York is an epicenter for the quality of work that we do,” he added. To start, Bernard has been designing small remodels, additions and, in concert with Huntington-based developer Thomas Abraham of Abraham Little Neck Development, a nearly 10,000 square foot French-style cha-

It all seems to be “a natural fit.” The Gold Coast’s history -- and assortment of mansions from the early 1900s like Old Westbury Gardens, the Marshall Field Estate and Coe Hall, suit Bernard’s architectural bent and appreciation for historic detail. “If you take a 5 mile radius with Locust Valley in the center, the architectural resources

teau in Brookville with a steep pitched roof and ornate chimneys. He is also working on a pro bono project with the North Shore Land Alliance, restoring an historic home on two acres in Oyster Bay that might otherwise have become another knockdown. Bernard said that the essence of being a designer is engaging the client “in the process so they take ownership” and “feel they are integral” and can “make certain decisions” as changes come up. Because he grew up in the grand style his clients often seek to replicate, communication flows

naturally and easily. Bernard sometimes shows clients photos of details from Panfield, helping them decide on proportions or whether a certain balustrade is too dark or heavy for their own space. “My firm reinforces the understanding of historically correct details or precedents,” Bernard said. In the last few months he has been meeting with local real estate brokers to introduce them to Harrison Design Associates’ studio environment, their high end work across the country and the collaborative approach they take to design in Locust Valley. The resources of their Atlanta, Santa Barbara, Washington, D.C., Beverly Hills and Shanghai, China, offices extend to Long Island. “Quality control is something we do as a collective responsibility,” he said of the firm, which has close to 65 employees. “It is looking to details of homes and understanding things like scale and proportion and applying that to the vernacular,” he said, “and trying to understand the aura of that style or genre.” The point is to “hone in on the historic quality” and not to make a stately home look like it was just built. Bernard said his firm has helped clients “restore old homes from A to Z,” documenting them extensively and then gutting them completely, “so when we put them back they have the feeling of the old home.” With ground up renovations, he said, they may put plaster on the walls instead of drywall so that the acoustics are the way they had been. “There is the kind of person who wants to maintain the fact there is a gap in the floorboard and a slope in the floor,” he said, while others want “to jack up the house so it feels like it is new.” Perhaps because he grew up at Panfield, he said, his heart leaps when given “an opportunity on the restoration side.” More clients, however, opt for new construction. While the firm’s work is not always traditional, their modern design studio work “really grows out of understanding scale and proportion that is the backbone of a lot of the successful classical architecture,” Bernard said. Even in traditional homes, Bernard and his colleagues “are incorporating a lot of what modern families want,” from the way the rooms are laid out with a big, open kitchen family room, using radiant floor heating and other technological advances in homes “that have the timeless quality of design.” SE SHAWN ELLIOTT | SUMMER 2011 13

MARGREET CEVASCO Transitional with a Masculine Edge by JENNA KERN-RUGILE

Margreet Cevasco comes from a long line of creative people. As owner of Margreet Cevasco Design in Sea Cliff, she loves to share stories about her father, a writer and scholar, and her grandmother, a couture dress designer. And she’s thrilled that the creative gene is continuing in her offspring, a son who recently graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Cevasco’s biggest influence was her mother, Constance Cevasco, also an interior designer. “I absorbed much of her style,” she says. “When I did my first showcase, I looked at the finished room and thought, ‘This looks just as if my mother did it.’ When I showed her the room, she felt the same way.” 14 SUMMER 2011 | SHAWN ELLIOTT

Cevasco never planned to enter the interior design field. “I was a bit of a hippie type,” she laughs. But her mother had an inventive way of guiding her daughter toward the career that is now her passion. “In my mid twenties, I had a boyfriend with a really ugly apartment,” recalls Cevasco. “When I asked my mother to help redesign it, she said she didn’t have the time. She encouraged me to do it myself.” Cevasco took on the challenge, and was surprised to discover she “absolutely loved” the process. “I guess you could say it was in my DNA,” she says with a smile. The key to great design, says Cevasco, is an intangible quality: the artistic sensitivity a designer brings to the process. “I firmly believe that, although you can learn technique, you can’t learn talent,” she says. “My job is to take a client’s vision and transform it into a sophisticated, comfortable and livable space.” She was formerly a partner in CDXO Design, a now defunct Sea Cliff interior design firm. Cevasco calls her style “transitional,” with an emphasis on a more masculine look. “I never go for the frilly,” she says. “I love to

combine old and new in an eclectic mix that creates a sense of balance and comfort. I don’t want to be confined by a particular style or element.” Working out of a studio in her transformed garage, she typically creates the framework in neutral shades—mostly whites, creams, browns and grays--and then layers color on top, using artwork, upholstery and other elements to add splashes of color and interest. That technique also enables her designs to be altered seasonally—for example, adding deeper-colored pillows and weightier window treatments in winter. “If the basics are well chosen, accessories can be changed to make a huge impact,” she says A project she recently completed in Commack personifies her style--and it also has special meaning, since the homeowner was her mother’s client three decades ago. The project was Cevasco’s way of paying tribute to her mother, who passed away in 2006. The couple was downsizing from a large waterfront home in Fort Salonga to an upscale, three-bedroom condo in the Hamlet.

“You have to feel very comfortable with the person whom you allow to be part of the intimate experience of designing your home.” “It was a very emotional move for them,” says Cevasco. “It was important to them to keep as many of their treasured pieces as possible, but they had no idea how to incorporate them into their new home.” Cevasco repurposed many of the couples’ existing furnishings in new ways. For example, she moved the chandelier from their former dining room to the new home’s master bedroom; she hung the kitchen light fixtures in the bath; and she transformed the antique kitchen table into a desk for the home office. Neutral walls, wood floors and brown fabrics create a warm, comforting backdrop for the couples artwork and accessories, including an oversized Asian screen, a lion collection and some magnificent Chinese urns. “We discussed some fabric and color choices before they left for Florida for the winter, but they trusted me completely,”

says Cevasco. Her experience in model home staging and turnkey design made this project a perfect fit. “We’ve had several clients that have entrusted us to renovate and design their homes and have given us the freedom to make decisions and selections with minimal involvement from them,” she says. Clients describe the desired look and function, give Cevasco their wish list and requirements, and then she and her team present an overall design concept that includes palette, layout and some key furniture pieces. “Once the mood and feel of the space has been determined and agreed upon, they leave the details and headaches to us.” That level of trust is crucial, Cevasco says. “It’s all a matter of the relationship; you have to feel very comfortable with the person whom you allow to be part of the intimate experience of designing your home.” SE SHAWN ELLIOTT | SUMMER 2011 15
