This cocktail is perfect for someone who loves coffee with a bit of attitude. Serve it up on Christmas Eve when the kids go off to bed and you find yourself building a bicycle from scratch.
INGREDIENTS

16 oz fresh brewed, hot coffee 8 oz Knob Creek Bourbon 2 oz cream 2 oz Grade B maple syrup 1 pinch cinnamon .25 teaspoon Mexican vanilla 1 oz Kahlua (for foam)
Pour four ounces of the mix heated with a cappuccino machine steamer into tempered glass coffee mug or glass. For foam, dry shake heavy cream mixed with a few drops of Kahlua. Layer it over the top, dust with a pinch of sugar and torch it from the top lightly so as not to break the glass.

CHOCOLATE LAVA CAKE Makes 6 cakes
Chocolate Lava Cake is indeed a delightful and indulgent dessert that never fails to impress. Here’s a simple recipe for you:
INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter 4 ounces high-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), chopped 1 cup powdered sugar 2 large eggs 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Optional: cocoa powder or powdered sugar for dusting
METHOD Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease and flour (or use cocoa powder) individual ramekins or small oven-safe bowls. In a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler, melt the butter and chocolate together. Stir until smooth and well combined. In a separate bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, eggs, egg yolks, and vanilla extract until well combined. Slowly add the melted chocolate and butter mixture to the sugar and egg mixture, stirring continuously. Add the salt and gradually fold in the flour until just combined. Be careful not to over mix. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared ramekins or bowls. Place them on a baking sheet.
Remember that baking times can vary, so keep an eye on the cakes, and adjust the time accordingly. The goal is to have a gooey, molten centre when you cut into the cake.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes. The edges should be set, but the centre should still be soft. Allow the lava cakes to cool for a few minutes before serving. You can run a knife around the edges to help loosen them from the ramekins. Invert each lava cake onto a serving plate. Dust with cocoa powder or powdered sugar if desired. The centre should be gooey and molten. Serve the chocolate lava cakes immediately, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

ROOT VEGETABLE AND ROAST CHICKEN PAN STEW Serves 4 to 6 as a vegetable-forward main You can roast any chicken over a big pile of vegetables, securely knowing that everything will cook safely, nothing will be lost, and much will be found. As the chicken roasts, its juices season the vegetables, helping them roast too. The roasted meat is easily shredded and stirred into a simple pan stew. This is one of the most delicious ways I know to cook meat and vegetables together.
INGREDIENTS 2 carrots, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces 2 parsnips, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces 1 turnip, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces 1 celery root, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces 1 pound (450 g) baby potatoes 1 leek, top and bottom trimmed, cut into 2-inch (5 cm) intact rounds, rinsed as needed Cloves from 1 head of garlic, peeled and halved Sea salt Freshly ground pepper 1 large roasting chicken (About 5 pounds/2.25 kg) 2 lemons, halved crosswise Leaves from a handful of fresh rosemary, thyme, sage, savory, or oregano sprigs, minced A few handfuls of tender savoury greens (baby spinach, baby kale, arugula, or Swiss chard)

METHOD Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Turn on the convection fan if you have one. Fill a large roasting pan with the carrots, parsnips, turnip, celery root, potatoes, leeks, and garlic. Lightly season the vegetables with salt and pepper and gently mix together. Thoroughly season the chicken with salt and pepper and nestle breast side up in the centre of the vegetables. Position the lemon halves cut side up around the chicken. Roast, gently shaking and settling the pan once or twice, until the vegetables are tender and caramelized and the chicken is golden brown and finished, an hour or so. The chicken is done when a digital or quick-read thermometer registers at least 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the breast meat and thigh. Remove from the oven.

With the chicken still in the pan and a pair of tongs in each hand, pull, tug, and shred the meat away from the carcass. Share the crispy skin treat with all assembled. Sprinkle with fresh herbs and squeeze the roasted lemons with a pair of tongs, allowing the juices to mingle. Stir in the greens and rest as they wilt before serving, a minute or two. Reserve the carcass for another day’s chicken broth.

TURKEY TIME
A
utumn is poultry season. Why? Because in the north, autumn was our last chance to harvest and preserve food for the coming winter. The reason we get into turkey in autumn is dependent on what foods can be stored the longest. We feast on the most perishable of our harvest season, the humble turkey, both first and last. We celebrate the noticeable transition into autumn with Thanksgiving and, in December, the end of autumn and our trek back to longer days. So that brings me to this season’s hottest question, “How do you cook a turkey, chef?” Segment your turkey Cut it up into pieces, remove the white meat and dark meat from the internal bones. Legs and breasts get packed into a roasting pan, rubbed down with canola oil and seasoned with salt, pepper and the PEI classic, summer savory. This meat gets roasted at 175C or 350F for about two hours. After the first hour: Check your meat every 20 minutes with a probe thermometer. When it reaches 80C or 175F it’s done. You can turn your oven down and hold it there for another hour without issue. A segmented cooking technique has several advantages for handling poultry. First and most obviously, it simply cooks faster. This mitigates the drying out of white meat, as it spends less time in the oven than if it were an allday-roasting affair.

Second, there’s no guess work about whether or not the stuffing has become hot enough to sufficiently kill salmonella, as the stuffing doesn’t actually touch raw poultry at all in this process. Third, a segmented turkey can be prepped in advance, and held in the fridge in a much smaller size. It also fits in plastic food bags for overnight marinating or freezing. Fourth, a segmented bird grants access to the bones, which, in the culinary world, are the raw materials or reagents, if you will, of our most prestigious kitchen sorcery. Making sauce/gravy After removing the meat from the turkey’s torso structure, the bones get boiled up with all the vegetable trimmings —carrots, onions, celery, bay leaf, herb stems; a classic mire poix mixture, which varies in composition, dependent on the desired derivative— to make stock. After three hours at a simmer, the stock is strained and returned to the stove on high heat to boil out more than half of its liquid, reducing the volume and compounding the flavour. This is the essence of our turkey demi-glace. In combination with another touch of magic, the roux, our stock transforms from a watery, salt brine into something all together different, and far more interesting to the palate. The roux is a precise combination of equal parts by weight of fat and flour and used as a thickening agent to add both flavour and viscosity through the emulsifying properties of gluten. Here’s how it works Melt an entire stick of butter in a sauce pot over medium heat and stir in a quarter cup of flour. The two ingredients come together to form a
mass that looks similar to wet sand. There is no loose flour, nor any liquid fat left in the bottom of the pan. Continue cooking this until it smells like warm, buttery toast or roasted nuts. Add a splash (about a half cup or so) of white wine to your roux, whisk it in until it’s smooth. It’s going to look like paste. Add two cups of stock and continue with the whisk until the roux dissolves completely. Boil it and reduce the water volume by half or so, until it thickens enough to be pourable, but not gelatinous. Be cautious though; over heated demi-glace will boil over, so don’t walk away from it! Once the desired volume and viscosity is achieved, adjust the flavour until it tastes like gravy. BREAD STUFFING INGREDIENTS 2 carrots 1 large onion 3 stalks of celery 1 C butter (ADL) Stale bread (cubed) 2 C turkey stock METHOD Peel vegetables and chop finely, cook them together in a pot with butter. When the vegetables are soft, mix them into your stale bread cubes. Pour some of your stock on top or use two cups of the boxed stuff— it’s ok, nobody’s judging— mix it in. In a cake pan lined with parchment, pack this in like you’re stuffing a turkey. Really mash it in there. Cover it with more parchment. Wrap the top with aluminum foil. Aluminum keeps the steam in (like the cavity inside the turkey) and the parchment stops the foil from sticking to your food. Place it in the oven next to your turkey at the one-hour mark, and you’ll be set for success!
FRESH CRANBERRY SAUCE Combine a pound of cranberries with a cup of sugar, juice and zest of one orange, a stick of cinnamon, a tablespoon of vanilla, and a pinch of salt in a sauce pot. Frost the glass rim with sugar (optional) and place in freezer to chill. Add first five ingredients to cocktail shaker filled 2/3 with crushed ice. Strain and pour into chilled cocktail glasses.
Coffee Lovers Cocktail INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 ounces brandy (or cognac) 1 1/2 ounces ruby port 1 small egg 1 teaspoon simple syrup METHOD
There are two keys to mixing cocktails that include eggs: Make sure your egg is fresh and shake the drink more than usual to ensure the egg is properly mixed. 22
In a cocktail shaker, pour the brandy, ruby port, egg, and simple syrup. Fill with ice, and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Blueberry Gin Sour INGREDIENTS 2 ounces London Dry Gin 1 1/2 ounces Blueberry Simple Syrup 1 ounce fresh lemon juice 1/2 egg white Ice METHOD
Dark & Stormy INGREDIENTS 1 litre apple juice 1 cinnamon stick 4 cloves 1 lemon peelings cut into strips 1 apple cut into wedges 100 ml dark rum
METHOD Pour the apple juice into a saucepan and place over a low heat. Add the cinnamon stick, lemon peel and cloves and gently heat. Add the rum and stir; don’t allow it to boil. Ladle into glasses and add apple wedges and citrus peel to serve.
Fill a coupe glass with ice. To a cocktail shaker, add gin, blueberry syrup, lemon juice and egg white. Add on the lid and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Add in ice and shake the mixture again until it is thoroughly chilled. Remove the ice from the coupe glass, then strain the drink into the chilled glass.

Retinol stands out as an ingredient that truly delivers noticeable results. In the beauty industry, retinol has become a star player. The retinol reputation Renowned by dermatologists worldwide, retinol is celebrated for its ability to boost collagen production, reduce fine lines, and fade dark spots. Look for a brand known for its compatibility with various skin types and tones, leaving behind a youthful glow even after the first application. However, there are some important considerations. Too good to be true? Retinol can have side effects, including what’s known as the “retinol uglies” – a temporary phase of skin shedding, redness, and adjustment before revealing a luminous glow. It’s crucial to patch-test and gradually adjust the concentration to find what suits your skin. Don’t forget to use broadspectrum SPF 30 or higher to protect your newfound radiance. Regarding other side effects, many skincare ingredients may initially cause breakouts. It’s essential to observe how your skin reacts and seek guidance if needed. My personal experience I battled cystic acne from ages 13 to 17, leaving scarring and uneven texture. Retinol, specifically a one per cent concentration product, has been a game-changer for my fair-toned,
chemically resilient skin. Combined with moisturizing and a short massage routine, and topped with SPF for outdoor protection, it has worked wonders. It's about confidence In my search for a reliable skincare routine, retinol stands out as an ingredient that truly delivers noticeable results. While many products claim to be miraculous, retinol leaves my skin smoother and radiantly glowing. It’s not just about shine; it’s about confidence and hope in my skincare journey. But how do you start and when should you stop? Remember, everyone’s skin is unique, and the abundance of product choices can be overwhelming. Start with a moderate concentration, like 0.5 per cent, and adjust as needed. In Canada, the highest over-the-counter retinol concentration is one per cent. The appropriate concentration also depends on factors like skin tone and melanocyte activity. Darker complexions should start lower, usually at 0.5 per cent, to prevent hyperpigmentation while lighter complexions may begin at 0.5 per cent or even one per cent.
harmful free radicals that can damage the skin. It promotes error-free development of skin followed by a radiant glow. Later in your skincare journey, if you find that your skin doesn’t tolerate retinol well, try incorporating alternatives like AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids). These mild acids unclog pores and exfoliate dead skin cells. AHAs work on the surface, addressing issues like uneven texture and hyperpigmentation (including acne scarring), while BHAs target the deeper layers of the epidermis (more specifically the first two — stratum corneum and lucideum) helping with persistent breakouts. Keep in mind that this information should not replace advice from a licensed dermatologist. Lastly, less is often more in skincare. If using topical retinol, avoid overwhelming your skin with multiple active ingredients. If incorporating hydroxy acids, be mindful of how they fit into your routine and adapt slowly. For example, lactic acid (AHA) and salicylic acid (BHA) are often used in alternation, but start cautiously and let your skin adjust.

ncorporated in 1995 after the amalgamation of five communities, the population at that time was approximately 5,800. From the 2016 to 2021 census periods, Stratford grew by over 12%, and today is more than 11,000 strong. Stratford is poised to continue to grow at a rapid rate with many exciting projects underway in the community, and projections for a population of over 20,000 by 2041. SHAPE STRATFORD The Town of Stratford received funding through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)’s Housing Supply Challenge’s Round two of funding. The Shape Stratford project supports finding solutions around barriers to new housing supply and believes that by working together and having conversations in our community, we can identify and close gaps, and create goals to achieve suitable housing for all. Stratford recognizes that there is widespread public concern about housing affordability and availability, not only in our community, but across PEI and Canada. We have all been 34
witness to the rising housing prices and inflation, which are pushing many out of being able to afford to live in the community they want to live in. Current zoning in Stratford, and other Island municipalities, necessitates a high frequency of council consideration of zoning and approvals, which most often result in adversarial public meetings on development projects. There is a systemic challenge built into the existing process in building public and council support for projects that increase density due to the values associated with traditional patterns of low-density development. The Shape Stratford project is aiming to change this by: • Working with residents, developers, stakeholders, community groups, and others. • Providing an engagement and education component. • Looking at the planning framework and process. • Forming an inter-municipal committee for collaboration and sharing. • Designing the project so that it can be replicated in other Canadian municipalities upon completion.

STRATFORD COMMUNITY CAMPUS Community life is an important aspect of any healthy and vibrant community. Residents who have access to facilities and spaces which support their mental, physical and spiritual health are happier and have a stronger sense of connection. The Town of Stratford has a bold vision to develop a multipurpose campus in the community, and construction is currently underway on required infrastructure to move this project forward. Upon completion Stratford’s Community Campus will encompass recreational, cultural, and educational facilities and amenities including the new high school currently underway by the Province of PEI. Sports fields for soccer, baseball/softball, and cricket, alongside a future multipurpose facility that is intended to include a rink, multi-
purpose space, cultural space, and other amenities, along with outdoor walking trails, are all part of the overall plans. There are also many sporting groups and associations who are in talks with the Town of Stratford to partner on this exciting development. This development is the largest undertaking of our community and will be a gem for residents to be proud of, as well as a gathering place for the community. MICHAEL THOMAS WATERFRONT PARK Another exciting project underway in the Town of Stratford is the development of Michael Thomas Waterfront Park. After the decommissioning of the sewer lagoons from the site a couple of years ago, the space has been reclaimed and is being developed as a signature park for the community to gather in and enjoy, through all four seasons. The current trail system in place is being upgraded with a wooden boardwalk installed. There are three lookouts with benches included in this phase of the project to allow park users to enjoy the views looking over the water. Electrical outlets and lighting will provide for use in the evenings and for seasonal events, and the wooden boardwalk will extend to encompass the existing area surrounding the Michael Thomas
fountain providing further access to it. Further phases are proposed to include a marketplace plaza; additional trails, gardens, and plantings; future extension of the boardwalk; and other mixed-use developments in the general area. The Town of Stratford has a long history of being a welcoming and diverse community. October of 2021 the largest credit union in Atlantic Canada was created when four PEI credit unions came together under the name Provincial Credit Union. Two years on, CEO Alfred Arsenault reflects on the impressive changes and growth the organization has seen. “The response to the amalgamation has been very positive,” he says. Members “now have access to service at our ten branches across the Island and we have implemented many new products and services over the last two years to continue to respond to members’ needs.” Among those new products is a debit Mastercard, a new First Home Savings Account and, for young people, no more service fees on chequing accounts. “Anyone 25 and younger can

Since the amalgamation, Provincial Credit Union staff numbers have grown from 155 to 190 across the province. “Staff are the lifeblood of our organization,” Arsenault says. The staffing increase is important, he notes, “to support our growth and enable us to provide great member experience to our members and communities across PEI.” That focus on community is a hallmark of credit unions. “Supporting our communities through strong connections and meaningful contributions is a core value of our organization,” Arsenault states. “Last year, we returned $1.5 million back to our communities in the form of sponsorships, scholarships and member rebates.” As part of the community engagement initiatives, EV chargers were installed at all 10 branches across the province.
Employees are fully committed to these community initiatives: “From volunteering to facilitating financial advice sessions to serving on community boards, staff are always working to better their community,” notes Arsenault.

he Gray Group has a long history of real estate development in Atlantic Canada, and of all the development projects they’ve worked on to date, this one has special significance. As Owner and CEO Cory Gray, President Trevor MacLeod, and several team members proudly call Stratford home—living, working, and raising families here—it’s a town they feel deeply connected to. Seeing the incredible potential for the town, The Gray Group acquired 102.6 acres in Stratford in 2018. Together with the Town, they began envisioning what the municipality’s future could look like and strategic planning for The Crossroads began. The Crossroads, the most extensive planned urban development in PEI’s history, is set to redefine the future of Stratford. The development allows for growth without expanding the town’s borders, as opting for vertical development over urban sprawl is more economically viable and environmentally friendly. The plan outlines ambitious goals, including 3,200 residential units, approximately 260,000 sq. ft. of new commercial space, and around 44,000 sq. ft. of light industrial space. The Gray Group has worked with the Department of Transportation, conducted traffic studies, and analyzed both the economic and environmental impact of this development. Their all-encompassing plan prioritizes strategic land use, preserving community connections, safeguarding environmentally sensitive areas, optimizing traffic flow, and enhancing the active transportation network— all while contributing to the Island’s housing inventory. The Crossroads will surely be a gamechanger for Stratford, and the team at The Gray Group hopes Islanders are as excited as they are to see this historic project come to life.

the heart of Stratford, a unique and heartwarming residence has emerged “The Nannies’ House,” a thoughtful creation by wellknown Island REALTOR® Melanie Shaw and her husband, Graeme, for their mothers, Clara and Joan. The idea for The Nannies’ House was born out of a desire to have both mothers close by yet allow them the autonomy of their own private spaces. The Nannies’ House was named by grandson, Brett. Clara, an Islander, was already living nearby, but Joan, residing in Ontario, faced mobility challenges and needed a home closer to her family. PLANK & PINE - Timeless, distinct, and designed for the way you live. PLANNING YOUR LIGHTING: Lighting choices are crucial for a home’s functionality, mood, and aesthetics, but it’s the one aspect where my clients often face the most challenges when building a new home or renovating. I want to address a few common lighting pain points to better prepare you for the sometimes overwhelming decisions involved in creating an enjoyable lighting experience. Inadequate Planning: ► From the moment your home is framed, you’ll be conducting a walk-through with your electrician, making crucial decisions about fixture placement. This entails having a clear understanding of where each fixture will go, a detailed grasp of your bathroom’s finished millwork dimensions, mirror specifications, ceiling heights, and many other key details that are often overlooked. It’s this level of foresight that people tend to neglect and this is where hiring a designer can be very valuable. Ignoring Fixture Location/Placement (functionality): ► Factors like ceiling heights necessitate careful attention, including the need for rod extenders, which may not be an option with all fixtures. Additionally, when dealing with sloped ceilings, it’s crucial to choose fixtures with an adaptability to sloped ceilings, as not all are. If installing pot lights on sloped ceilings, opting for directional pot lights, can work to eliminate an undesirable glare. The size and shape of the backplate on a fixture should also be considered to ensure it will fully cover the hole the electrician cuts. There are some fixtures that are vary from the standard size and you don’t want unsightly gaps. Underestimating Fixture Size: ► It’s a common mistake to choose fixtures that are too small (or too few), which can make them appear out of proportion and underwhelming with the context of the room. Conversely, oversized fixtures (or too many) can overwhelm a space. To determine the right fixture size, consider the size and layout of the space, as well as its intended purpose. Remember the goal is to strike a balance between the fixture’s size, the room’s proportions, and the desired visual impact. Overlooking Layered Lighting: ► There are three essential types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. Ambient lighting, like pot lights, provides overall illumination. Task lighting, found in floor lamps and table lamps, helps with specific activities. Accent lighting, such as picture sconces, add depth and highlight key features. By thoughtfully layering these three light sources, you create a home that’s not only supportive and functional but also cozy and aesthetically pleasing. Inadequate Lighting Budget: ►High-quality fixtures aren’t cheap but they have a substantial influence on the overall aesthetics and ambience of your home. Investing in well-designed, thoughtfully chosen light fixtures can transform your space from ordinary to extraordinary. 46

2. Serious buyers only! If a buyer is house hunting in the winter, they’re ready to move. Prospective buyers who shop during the winter months don’t want to miss out on the perfect home by taking the risk that another buyer will purchase the home before spring. In the spring, the flood of new houses on the market coupled with freshly warmed weather can create a lot of “thinkers” who aren’t really ready to buy. In short, winter buyers are more likely to pull the trigger on making an offer on your home. So, you have decided to list during the winter. Here’s some key things to keep in mind before welcoming interested buyers in. Set the Temperature
SELLING YOUR HOME IN THE WINTER Winter has proven to be an excellent time to sell their home and waiting for the spring market could mean you’re missing out on a great selling opportunity. Two of the best reasons to consider a winter listing are: 1. Less buyer competition Listing in the winter can give your property more attention. Since many people consider spring to be the best season to sell your home, many homeowners wait to list their homes until then. This increases the amount of inventory buyers have to look at. With fewer homes available in the winter, this may be a better time to put your home on the market.
While you may be trying to economize, it’s important to remember that you want buyers to feel warm and welcome the second they walk in the door. Keeping your home warm and welcoming (but not hot) is one way to make it easier to connect with it.

Handle the elements We live in a climate with snow and ice for a good part of the year, so it’s crucial to avoid potential obstacles or safety hazards. Your sidewalks, driveway and doorstep should remain clear, giving potential buyers easy access to the house and helping them avoid a nasty fall. Prioritize coziness Buyers want to feel warm and cozy the second they walk into your home. Add blankets, rugs, candles and pillows throughout the space. If you have a fireplace, make sure it’s pumping out heat and light during showings. Holiday decor Even though it’s the holidays, it’s important to pay attention to what’s

design journey with this easygoing family began in historic downtown Charlottetown, where their colonial-style home stands as a testament to timeless elegance. Eager to make some updates, they enlisted us to guide them through a primary bathroom renovation. Recognizing that the project might be too complex and overwhelming for them, they desired a hands-off approach from the very start. They entrusted us with the entire process, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience from start to finish.

Our mission was to seamlessly merge the concept of “luxury” with the existing unique historical features, ensuring the new space didn’t feel disconnected from the rest of the home. We started by merging two adjacent closets from adjoining rooms, providing us with an increased footprint. This allowed us to give our clients a spacious custom shower and the pony wall provided privacy to the relocated toilet. While we always aim to minimize the reconfiguration of plumbing to contain costs, in this case, we recognized the necessity of relocating it. At the top of our client’s wish list was in-floor heating and a towel warmer - two essential components that would infuse their bathroom with the luxurious atmosphere they were striving for. When you’re already in the process of renovating your bathroom, incorporating radiant in-floor heat is a relatively straightforward and costeffective enhancement to make. We worked with a local cabinetmaker to craft a custom vanity that featured slightly narrower outer portions, accommodating the existing window trim, and unintentionally infusing captivating dimension into the space. Additionally, we asked for arched toe kicks, a subtle but harmonizing element that beautifully resonates with the curved oversized mirror positioned above. Our shower’s tile choices defied convention with a mix of textures, shapes, and styles. Hexagon marble adorned the floor, while soft gray large format matte tiles graced the lower walls, and a classic white glossy subway tile adorned the upper sections. Transitioning between the two wall tiles, a marble bluenose seamlessly bridges the gap, and for added movement and intrigue, veiny quartz elegantly lines the sills and curbs. 52

Lazaric’s electrician background started with taking a one-year course at Holland College before working with Olympia Electric in Charlottetown immediately after completion. His fouryear apprenticeship followed in which he received his Red Seal, allowing him to work anywhere within Canada. After passing the Red Seal exam Lazaric moved to B.C for four years where he gained extensive experience on industrial and commercial sites as a foreman. In May of 2023 he decided to move back home to PEI and start his own company and bring his experience from away to his hometown. Since Lazaric opened his business, some of the most recent projects that he’s most proud of include the new Brafasco location on Sherwood Road, a 12,000 sq/ft retail and warehouse building, with a separate tenant space available for rent, as well as working on a larger commercial building in Stratford, which will have seven to eight small businesses in it when it is finished.

The types of projects Lazaric and his team are working on currently in PEI are mostly commercial jobs in Stratford and Charlottetown, he says, as well as keeping very busy with service upgrades and generator hook-ups as Islanders gear up for the colder months ahead. Ensuring that Islanders are happy and safe and being back home is what is important to Lazaric. “What I like best about working on the Island is that it is my hometown,” he says. “After being away for four years and knowing how badly I wanted to come home, it makes it very humbling to be doing honest, quality work on the Island I love so much.”

A FOCUS ON PEOPLE BRINGS SUCCESS FOR STEVE YOSTON AND THE EXIT REALTY PEI TEAM You never know where life will take you or what will inspire you to change directions.
F
or Steve Yoston, it was a newspaper ad for an EXIT Realty event in Charlottetown. He had never considered a career in sales but attended the event to see what it was all about. “The presenter was Steve Morris, the founder and Chairman of EXIT Realty Corp. International. It ended up changing the direction of my life,” says Yoston. “I got my real estate license shortly after.” Having grown up on a tobacco farm in Launching, Yoston gained his first work experience in the fields but also on the water. “My grandfather fished lobsters out of the harbour. His operation was eventually taken over by my brother. 66

My father and my brother also grew cultured mussels from leases in Boughton River. My early working years were spent in tobacco fields, mussel leases and off the east coast of the Island helping out on fishing boats.” Yoston then attended Holland College, earning diplomas for lab field testing technician and construction technician. He worked in construction for a short time and continued fishing lobsters with his family. It was in 1999 that his father pointed out the newspaper ad that would lead him to Charlottetown and a career in real estate. In 2002, while celebrating the end of a successful lobster season, he met Carol O’Hanley. “She has been my partner in business and life ever since,” says Yoston.

During this period Yoston continued to develop his real estate business and, in 2015, he and Carol purchased their EXIT Realty franchise. “My takeaway from the initial event with Steve Morris was that anyone can change their life by changing their thoughts,” Yoston states. “Carol has a background in human services and always had a servant’s heart. MATERIAL GIRL HOW TO SELECT FABRIC FOR YOUR HOME: Fabric selection can be fun and exciting, so here are a few tips for when you start to put together your décor.
I like to start a story board. Usually, I find something that inspires me like a painting that I love, or a piece of fabric. From your inspiration you can draw out all the colours you like and make decisions on where you want to apply those choices: wall paint, cushions, drapery, and upholstery. You can choose to have colour everywhere, or just on accents. One is more serene and the other more eclectic. There is no right or wrong choice, as long as you love it. Typically, the walls and large upholstery pieces get solid fabric choices. Pillows, drapery, and chairs can use patterns. Along with these selections we think about whether the fabric should be smooth or textured, heavy or light. How will the fabric be used? Will it be used for drapery or romans which do not require heavy fabrics? Will it be used for a family sofa with lots of wear and tear? Maybe a little-used side chair that can be lightweight and fun? Fabrics have a grading system that tells us what kind of wear we can get out of it. Some fabrics have fabric guard built in. This should be used on highly used items like sofas or favourite chairs.

The anticipation in the air was palpable as the doors of Shoe Craze swung open on the bright morning of April 15th, 2023, marking the grand opening of Summerside’s newest shoe haven. This venture wasn’t just a new business endeavour for owner Paulette Barke; it was the culmination of a strategic decision to expand and diversify. The opportunity arose when the former owner of the only existing shoe store in Summerside retired, leaving a gap that the ambitious team at Go Girl Fashions was eager to fill. In 2021, the first steps toward this exciting venture were taken when the building was acquired. The transformation process began, with a 16-ft wall being removed and a garage evolving into a beautiful shoe store. Collaborating with Pop Design for the interior design and Built Rite Construction from Summerside for the construction, the end result was nothing short of stunning. The store stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of the local trades that turned a vision into a one-of-a-kind shoe boutique.

To enhance the shopping experience, Shoe Craze went beyond just offering an extensive collection of footwear. A cozy fireplace and a cappuccino machine were added to create an inviting ambience, turning a visit to the store into a delightful outing. The initial feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents of PEI are expressing their appreciation for having another option to shop for beautiful footwear locally. The carefully curated selection includes renowned brands such as Roamers, Django Juliette, Vionic, Capelli Rossi, Dorking, Channi B, Di Chenzo, Miz Mooz, and more, offering a diverse range of styles and origins to suit every taste. Beyond being a shoe store, Shoe Craze is driven by a broader mission. The goal is to empower women, helping them look and feel terrific through a combination of fashion and footwear. Exceptional customer service is a top priority, with a commitment to listening to customer feedback to continually improve and expand the product offerings.

Q. What do you love about creating art? Besides keeping my hands and mind busy, seeing, or making art of any kind makes me happy. There is this magical quality of watching something beautiful appear beneath your own hands that gives me such a rewarding feeling. Q. When did you start painting? While I did dabble with painting over the years it was during Covid lockdown that I decided to take watercolour classes online. I discovered a wonderful teacher from Poland, Chris Kowalski, who I highly recommend (website:Esperoart.com). His was a methodical, step-by-step approach that really helped develop my skills and upped my game so much as to make me like painting more than ever.

Q. What medium do you work in? Watercolour Q. What inspires you? I’m primarily inspired by beauty and colour. The challenge is to make my paintings have a vibrancy that sets them apart from classical realism. Q. What is your favourite subject to paint? Typically, my favourites are nature and creatures related to water or waterthemed scenes, most likely inspired by living on what I consider the most beautiful island of all. I usually treat these subjects in either a whimsical or serene manner rather than moody or dark. Q. How long does it take to complete a piece? It can take me weeks to complete a composition because watercolour can be a tricky, unforgiving medium in that the whites are created by the paper, and you can’t really overpaint or erase mistakes.
To be honest, it can terrify me sometimes that I might mess up, so I often step back and reflect for a while, and I really take time to consider choices and prepare by doing testing samples and strokes on the side.

Because I started painting later in life, I lack the confidence most artists might have and suffer from a bit of imposter syndrome where I can’t truly believe I know how to do this, but then it turns out I do! Such a lovely and surprising satisfaction.
Yes, and in various sizes. You can find my work at the Inn at Bay Fortune, Carr’s Oyster Bar and my shop, Material Girl Fabrics. Q. You also have a business. Tell us a bit about that?
Q. What is your favourite piece so far? “Young Christine’s Dream” which I created while taking the online class. This painting is like a whimsical narrative of my own personal story of how I ended up living on PEI. The subject is a summery-dressed woman in her 40’s who is riding an old school bike near a beach. One sees by the flowing head scarf that there is that lovely breeze that comes by being near the shore, and yet the viewer doesn’t see her face. That is because she is gazing; not ahead of her, but at the
l founded Material Girl Fabrics in March 2018 and it is a custom home furnishing shop. We have the largest fabric library in the Maritimes, with loads of samples to browse through and choose from. We make drapery, cushions and pillows and also upholster furniture. Material Girl also offers alterations on clothing, and repairs on heavy duty items like boats, recreational vehicles, and patio enclosures. I and my staff love to help customers with their own pursuit of art and beauty within their living spaces.
