FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Maybe it’s the beautiful décor, extravagant centrepieces, the food, or maybe it's just all the love in the air. There's just something about weddings. It doesn't matter who's getting married, I know I'll be crying like a baby before the ceremony is finished. Seeing two people, surrounded by their closest friends and loved ones, dedicating a day to their love; it's just such a special thing. All weddings, big or small, extravagant or simple, are so incredible because it's a celebration of their commitment to each other. During the winter holidays, Christmas, Valentine's Day, New Year's, many people pop the question to their partners. New engagements bring a flurry of excitement, and a multitude of questions. Where will the wedding be? Who will cater it? How about the dress? Suit? What about the wedding party? And it's for this reason that a large section of our winter issue focuses on all things bridal. We are thrilled to offer a bride guide for our readers that's completely local. We showcase Island boutiques, venues, caterers, jewelers, photographers, florists, and pretty much everything else you need to plan your perfect day on the island. This is why it was such an honour to be a part of this issue. Because, let's be honest, PEI is the perfect place to get married. The rolling hills, the friendly people, the beaches, the small towns, the quaint chapels and rustic country venues... there's something here everyone can enjoy and connect to. We had a lot of fun putting this together, and we truly hope you have just as much fun reading it.

lemon curd cheesecake

with strawberries

This cheesecake is pure heaven and perfect to serve to your sweetheart on Valentine's Day. This version is topped with delicious strawberries - substitute with your favourite fruit or try the cranberry orange sauce for a special touch. Usually, you have to let cheesecake sit out for a little while so soften up the texture, but I found this one to be quite soft, so feel free to serve it straight out of the fridge.

METHOD

Make lemon curd: Whisk together zest, juice, sugar, and eggs in a two-quart heavy saucepan. Add butter and cook over moderately low heat, whisking frequently, until curd is thick enough to hold marks of whisk and first bubbles appear on surface, about six minutes. Force lemon curd through a fine-mesh sieve into a wide shallow dish, scraping bottom of sieve, then cover surface with wax paper. Cool completely, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

Make and bake crust:

For lemon curd:

Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Invert bottom of springform pan (to make it easier to slide cake off bottom), then lock on side. Stir together crust ingredients in a bowl, then press onto bottom and one inch up side of springform pan. Place springform pan in a shallow baking pan and bake 10 minutes, then cool crust completely in springform pan on a rack.

1 tsp finely grated fresh lemon zest 1/2 C fresh lemon juice 1/2 C sugar 3 large eggs 1/2 stick (1/4 C) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces For crust: 1 1/3 C finely ground graham cracker crumbs (5 oz) 1/3 C sugar 1/8 tsp salt 5 tbs unsalted butter, melted For filling: 3 (8-oz) packages cream cheese, softened 1 C sugar 3 large eggs 3/4 C sour cream 1 tps vanilla Special equipment: a 9- to 91/2-inch spring-form pan 2 pints/baskets of strawberries Cranberry Orange Sauce: Combine one cup fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped, 1/4 cup granulated sugar and two tablespoons orange juice in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, until the sugar is dissolved and the cranberries start to break down. Remove from heat and cool completely before serving. Top cheesecake before serving.

Make filling and bake cheesecake: Reduce oven temperature to 300°F. Beat together cream cheese and sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth, one to two minutes. Reduce speed to low and add eggs one at a time, beating until incorporated. Beat in sour cream and vanilla until combined. Pour two thirds of cream cheese filling into crust, then spoon half of lemon curd over filling and swirl curd into filling with a small knife. (Avoid touching crust with knife to prevent crumbs getting into filling.) Bake cheesecake until set 1 1/2 inches from edge but centre trembles when pan is gently shaken, about 45 minutes. (Centre of cake will appear very loose but will continue to set as it cools.) Transfer springform pan to a rack and immediately run a knife around top edge of cake to loosen. Cool completely, about two hours, then chill, uncovered, at least four hours. Cut strawberries into 1/4 inch slices. Glaze the cheesecake with the remaining lemon curd. Top the cake with strawberry slices, starting from the outside and working your way in.

FOOD & DRINK

a true farm to table restaurant Words by Katrina Geenevasen Photos by Sean Berrigan

Author Michael Pollan once said, “Serve the kind of food you know the story behind.” It’s a concept many have embraced as of late, and one that Terre Rouge, one of PEI’s top restaurants, has wholeheartedly adopted, as well. Since opening its doors on the island in 2012, Terre Rouge has established itself as one of PEI’s restaurants to watch. Its menu, carefully and thoughtfully developed with the local food movement in mind, is what gets customers in the door at first, but always keeps them coming back for more. Whether it’s the restaurant’s signature mac and cheese (to die for, I assure you), the creamy chowder, or the delectable mushroom toast, the menu is filled with tons

8

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

of personality, endless flavour, and plenty of locally-sourced food. The best part? It’s changed up every six to eight weeks (with the exception of a few fan favourites, of course, such as the dishes above). “We are surrounded by countless local producers,” explains Alex Smith, Terre Rouge’s general manager. “There’s plenty of unique produce, dairy, meats, veggies, and seafood. We believe it’s best to support people around you, so you are aware of where everything has come from.” Customers are responsive to the restaurant’s unique take on food, and it’s earning Terre Rouge a place on the world stage. In 2017, it was named as one of the best places to eat in Canada by Oberon Press. “Being listed in magazines and articles holds us to a certain standard of quality

which we are proud to uphold,” says Smith, placing a steaming plate of white wine and garlic mussels (is your mouth watering yet?) on the table between us. “It makes us want to reach a little bit further and see where else we can get our name out there.” It seems they are doing something right; they were listed as one of the top 100 restaurants in the country in 2016 (they were the only restaurant on the island to make the list), as well as one of the top 10 places to eat in Atlantic Canada. While the restaurant’s immense popularity has a lot to do with the fresh, locallysourced ingredients, there’s another important element contributing to Terre Rouge’s popularity. And her name is Lucy Morrow.

Terre Rouge’s executive chef, Morrow was born and raised on a farm in Nova Scotia, and, lucky for PEI restaurant-goers, is very familiar with the farm-to-table concept: how animals are raised, what produce is in season, and how to use it. “This is our mantra, and having a capable chef who understands this is imperative to the goal of Terre Rouge,” says Smith. “Lucy is always creating unique dishes with many flavour combinations that you normally wouldn't have just laying around the kitchen at your house. This makes for a very memorable evening out, and hopefully leaves you wanting to come

back and try something else.’ Mission: accomplished. It seems there’s nothing this charming restaurant hasn’t thought of. From the homemade ketchup to the unique and inviting atmosphere (you won’t want to leave once you’re settled into one of the cosy booths by the fireplace!), customers want for absolutely nothing. “Get out of the norm,” encourages Smith. “Come check us out and see how we use all local supplies to create very interesting dishes. Our menu, our cocktails and our atmosphere stand out in this city! Many

people who come for the first time are very surprised when they come in the door and see what we offer.” Having recently undergone plenty of change — including new staff, modern renovations, a menu overhaul, and new wine and cocktail menus, for starters — locals and visitors alike are sure to be nothing short of impressed after their dining experience at Terre Rouge. “We look forward to people coming in and letting us give them an experience they will remember and leave them wanting to come back for more.” Our advice? Start with the charcuterie board…and don’t skip dessert.

Terre Rouge has implemented a zero-waste initiative. “We look forward to people coming in and letting us give them an experience they will remember and leave them wanting to come back for more.”

The restaurant saves as many of the scraps as it can (such as stems, leftover vegetables, meat, etc.) to preserve them, dry them, grind them into dust for garnishes, or to use them for the nightly amuse bouche. What can’t be used gets returned to a local farm for feed or for compost. “This requires a lot of work,” says Smith, “but it is definitely something we pride ourselves in.” Diners are only faced with one difficulty when they arrive: deciding what to try first. for All Occasions Papa Joe’s Restaurant Words By Katrina Geenevasen Photos: LaVie in Pictures

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” - Virginia Woolf, Room of One’s Own

Joseph Jabbour, an experienced entrepreneur and restauranteur, established ‘Papa Joe’s Family Restaurant’ in the Spring of 1988. This year Papa Joe’s celebrates 30 years in business – three decades serving wonderful meals, offering warm service and hosting events. Located in the centre of Charlottetown, Papa Joe’s is open seven days a week and is still family owned and operated by Barb, John and Jo-Anne Jabbour. With its focus on fresh quality products and great service, Papa Joe’s is a favourite of Islanders and visitors alike. You can relax in the newly renovated dining room, or enjoy a snack and drink at the bar.

With its diverse menu, Papa Joe’s is a go-to establishment for business lunches, family get togethers, romantic dinners or small group events. Offering a wide variety, there are selections that will appeal to all - from braised pot roast, to Mediterranean salads, seafood specialties and melt-in-your-mouth steaks. Award winning Chef Irwin MacKinnon, this year’s PEI Chef of the Year, has been with the Jabbour family for more than 25 years. He is everything you would expect in a world class chef – creative, innovative and committed to quality and local ingredients. “Chef Irwin is passionate about his work,” says Jo-Anne Jabbour, serving up a bowl of

Those who have been to Papa Joe’s dish up what they love about Charlottetown’s best-kept secret: “Took friends last night for dinner...we have all been in the travel business for [more than] 25 years and have pretty much eaten all over the globe. We all agreed that the food was top-notch, world class.” - George Stewart (Photo: Story Sheidow)

“Absolutely the best service I have received at a restaurant, and the food was fantastic. The next time I go to PEI, I will definitely be going back to Papa Joe’s for a meal. Awesome.” - Garth Davis

MacKinnon’s creamy chowder with salmon, haddock and scallops. It’s the perfect, warming dish on the cool winter day I visited Papa Joe’s. Chef MacKinnon has been actively involved in the local culinary community throughout his career, and currently serves as President of the Prince Edward Island Chef’s Association. He has also been a teacher and mentor to many staff over the years – coaching attention to detail, consistency and care in presentation. He was also inducted into the Honour Society of the Canadian Culinary Federation, a national body of chefs. “Irwin’s skill, creativity and dedication to his craft has been instrumental in the success

and growth of Papa Joe’s,” says Jabbour. “That success has a lot to do with the direction he chose to take the menu. “We are a family owned business with a ‘local centric’ point of view,” Jabbour explains. “We know our customers and we are committed to providing them with homemade, local, fresh and healthy menu selections.” Quality service and casual, comfort food keeps customers coming back for more. “Our staff is motivated, energetic and team-oriented,” says Jabbour. “We have had the great opportunity of maintaining a long-term staff who take the same pride in what they do as us.”

So the next time you find yourself wondering what’s for dinner, wonder no more. Your next great meal can be found right here. Papa Joe’s is on University Avenue, just a short drive from the downtown core and has a large parking lot available for customers.

Modern Luxury Meets Historic Elegance Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites Words by Katrina Geenevasen Photos: LaVie in Pictures

Nestled in the heart of Charlottetown, the Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites promises to serve as an historic hideaway for its guests. It doesn’t disappoint.

“We created a whole new life and purpose for this property. Today, it remains a landmark of the city but holds a reflection of what we stand for, provides an insight of our respect for the property and the passion we are willing to share with our guests. We are proud of our achievements and are excited for the opportunity that lies ahead.”

(Photo courtesy of Sydney Boutique Inn) Here, the surrounding world becomes quiet and time stands still, enveloping lodgers into total luxury that makes it rather challenging for one to leave. Originally constructed in 1857 to serve as a private school for the Sisters of Notre Dame, the Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites features 18 exquisitely designed suites and 22 apartment suites ranging in size from 500 sq. ft. to 1200 sq. ft. All lavishly appointed with the finest of linens, plushest of furnishings, and sparkling chandeliers that simply enchant. There’s no other way to put it.

But that’s exactly what project manager Gordon MacPherson was after when the the four-storey structure was purchased back in 2014. The plan was to develop luxury accommodations that would do nothing less than leave guests breathless. “Each suite acts as a relaxing retreat and a quiet escape from the city,” he explains.

The Suites From the moment you enter The Sydney Inn, it’s easy to see how this striking escape from the ordinary is refining pure and total luxury; it’s truly an experience unlike any other. “It’s designed to surpass our clients’

- Gordon MacPherson

expectations,” explains MacPherson, leading the way through the timelessly elegant building, featuring charm at every turn. From the arched windows, to the gabled dormers, to the wide hallways flooded with bright, natural sunlight, it’s hard to know where to look first. But MacPherson makes it easy, leading the way through the inn to the Harbour View Suite. If it’s an once-in-a-lifetime experience you’re after in Charlottetown, rest assured there’s no need to look any further. With breathtaking views of the

Charlottetown Harbour, the exquisite two-bedroom suite is lavishly equipped with king and queen beds outfitted with the finest of linens, gorgeous hardwood flooring, and elegant chandeliers. The living area, complete with custom-built furnishings and eye-catching watercolour paintings, invites one to settle in and relax with a generous glass of wine. The white marble bathroom, equipped with a rainfall showerhead, dazzling light fixtures and soft terrycloth robes and slippers is equally breathtaking.

Welcome to True Indulgence. The executive king suite, classically styled to delight all the senses, is no less spectacular. A king bed dressed with premium linens is surrounded by beautiful wool carpeting, elegant crystal chandeliers, and original watercolour paintings of local scenery. And, much like in the Harbour View Suite, the living room features custom built furnishings that are perfect to relax in after a day of sightseeing in PEI. The deluxe king and queen suites are just as impressive, designed with true comfort and elegance in mind. There’s absolutely nothing ordinary about them. In fact, they are unequivocally magnificent. Know this: no matter which suite you choose to make your home-away-from-

home during your stay in PEI, the Sydney Boutique Inn & Suites will deliver an unforgettable experience. “Every stay is relaxing and pampering,” says MacPherson. “We’ve made sure each suite acts as a relaxing retreat and a quiet escape from the city.”

The Location While admittedly, some guests may have a hard time leaving the inn once they have settled into their luxurious suites, Charlottetown has plenty to offer to its visitors. It’s worth exploring, even for a little while. Luckily, the Sydney Inn is situated within walking distance to many of the island’s top restaurants and attractions, making it an ideal choice whether you’re visiting PEI on business or for pleasure.

The History The main Notre Dame building — overlooking the Hillsborough Square — was constructed in the mid-1800s to serve as an educational facility. Throughout the years, additions were added, making the already beautifully imposing structure even more so. It remained as such for nearly 120 years, until 1971, when classes ended as new schools were built to meet the needs of a growing community.

Following the school’s closure, the property became a retreat for the nuns, and a portion of the building acted as a nursing home for the aging sisters. It was 2013 when the decision was made to close the convent, which was, at the time, home to nearly 30 nuns. By 2014, the building was officially closed, and placed on the market the following year. This is where the story begins. As the property was viewed, the investors knew in their core that the structure was meant to be something special; something remarkable, memorable and nothing short of extraordinary. “The thing that intrigued me the most standing on the sidewalk and looking at the property was how timeless the building was,” MacPherson explains. “The lines were simple and clean. Masked behind tall maple trees, it was almost an unknown property to many people.” Despite showing no signs of life, the building had a certain aura about it. Something that, at the time, was hard to put a finger on. All MacPherson knew was that while it had a storied past, its future would be even brighter.

“This new hotel is well worth a visit. Everything about it is classy with the facilities and services designed for the clients’ pleasure. The staff are positive and welcoming. The rooms, suites, and apartments, are beautifully appointed and spotless. The breakfast, which was included, was varied, plentiful and delicious. The hotel is located within walking distance of restaurants, entertainment and tourist venues. A visit to this wonderful establishment will set the tone for a visit to Charlottetown and the Island. Enjoy, enjoy!” “Enjoyed our two-day stay. Wonderful breakfast selection. Beautifully appointed rooms, high ceilings, all created a very special feeling.”

“Once inside the building, I was amazed at how the sisters had respected and maintained the property. The building inside was as original as the day it was built,” he says. The hardwood flooring, detailed stairways, solid wooden doors, and detailed window and door trim lent a certain ‘something’ to the remarkable space, and a plan was set in motion to reveal the building’s true splendour. “The investors wanted to develop an understanding, an appreciation and respect for what this property stood for,” explains MacPherson. “Whatever direction they were to take, it was necessary to create a harmony between the past and the future vision they were to develop for this property.” From beginning to end, it was a process that took much more time than MacPherson ever expected, but with the support of the City of Charlotteown Councillors, the Mayor, the neighbourhood and the Sisters, he had the confidence that was needed to pursue the dream. The goal? To create a property that reflected an appreciation and respect for the environment, and to bring the property into the 21st century, all while maintaining its historical charm.

H O M E & C O T TA G E

THE FAMILY ROOM Words by Jacqui Chaisson

Comfort First A family room should be comfortable. Choose furnishings that are comfortable and cosy - big deep sofas with lots of room for the entire family. Sectionals are a wonderful choice for family rooms and they are available in an endless choice of fabrics, styles and colours.

Warm It Up Nothing warms up a space better than a fireplace or wood stove. Even though we can't accomadate natural gas fireplaces on the island, propane is a great alternative that delivers a cosy, even heat source that will drive away the worst chill of winter. A wood stove does the same job and fits into any space with ease. Many use wood pellets and are a clean-burning option.

Storage Every family room should include an abundance of storage. Shelves and built-ins for games, toys, books, family pictures and movie and game collections. Designate lower storage for the youngest members of the family for easy access. Using a combination of open shelves and cupboards will ensure your family room stays organized.

Light It Up Right Plan for different types of lighting - task lighting for reading nooks, recess lights on dimmers for ambiance lighting and spot lighting to highlight collections and artwork.

20

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

Family rooms should be a reflection of your family's favourite things. Adorn the walls with treasured photos and artwork and insist on having a space where everyone feels welcomed. Pillow Talk Add texture, colour and personalized accents with throw pillows. Choose good quality fill for your pillow forms feathers are always the best, they're comfortable and hold up to constant use. Pillow covers can be switched out seasonally and laundered when needed and can be purchsed in an endless variety of fabrics, styles and options. Use throw pillows in different sizes, textures and styles - extra large pillows are perfect for cuddling up on the floor.

Underfoot Area rugs are a wonderful addition to your family room and an opportunity to introduce a pop of colour or extra luxury. Choose a rug that offers extra comfort for lounging on the floor but is still easy to clean and won't show dirt.

Room For Everyone If you can't include a large sectional in your family room, add extra seating with poofs, ottomans, accent chairs or floor pillows.

Cuddle Up Don't forget to add soft and cosy throws and blankets to your sofas and chairs. Throw blankets come in the softest of fabrics that simply invite and encourage you to cuddle-up. Choose throws that are low-maintenance and machine washable; for 'super-fuzzy' throws - take the extra time to wash on delicate and lay flat to dry or they tend to lose their softness.

ISLAND LIVI NG Words by Jacqui Chaisson

In

every kitchen there is the potential for great storage, display, and functionality. The sad fact is all kitchens don’t have enough of any of these. A kitchen island solves these problems and looks beautiful doing it. From mobile islands to seating area kitchen islands, the amenity of having one or two in your kitchen is an added bonus. If you are fortunate to design or choose a home with a kitchen island, you’re in for a treat. For those that are on the fence as to whether to have one, look at these benefits of having a great kitchen island.

!

If you think a kitchen island is just for show, you now have legitimate reasons why your kitchen can benefit from one. From storage to additional seating, any sized home will love the versatility a kitchen island offers.

Add Storage and Cabinetry:

Extra Seating:

If your kitchen is lacking storage areas, a kitchen island may solve your problem. With the option of additional drawers, pull out shelves, and cabinets, the island is an extension to your existing kitchen. Ever thought you didn’t have enough room for recycling bins? Under a kitchen island makes a great accessible space because it doesn’t interfere with the main preparation area of the rest of the kitchen.

A kitchen island can act as informal dining area for the kids or it can act as additional seating when entertaining. Being able to chat with your family or guests is always an advantage while cooking and preparing meals. Even if your kitchen is small, a counter extension into the adjacent room can act as an island. Whether your space can seat two or six, it’s always a plus to be able to seat more people.

Perfect for Kids: Whether they're completing homework or pitching in to help make dinner, a kitchen island is a great place for kids to feel part of the action and be in close eye view. Another option for kitchen islands is to place kids' height amenities like a microwave and refrigerated drawer in reach. For after-school snacks and Saturday morning early breakfasts, amenities that the kids can feel independent using are a good idea for some households.

Adds Versatility: Need extra counter space and at other times need more floor space? A movable kitchen island offers more room when you and your friends want to cook a huge meal and each person takes a section of the kitchen to prepare. Once your meal is complete, roll your kitchen island out of the way for added space. Movable islands are ideal for smaller kitchens that need the best of both worlds.

WINTER 2017

www.pei-living.ca

25

Additional Kitchen Amenities at Your Island: In larger kitchens, add prep sinks, fridge drawers and additional cooking areas to make your kitchen more functional. Since larger kitchens may have the ability to have plumbing and electrical services run to the island, the options are limitless. Add a range hood over your stove/grill and now your island becomes the main hub of cooking and entertaining.

Options are endless: Whether you are using your island for utilitarian purposes or you want the island to be the show stopper of the kitchen, there is a countertop surface for you. If cost is a concern, consider plastic laminate or solid surface, man made finishes. For mid-level spending, consider higher grades of solid surfaces or stained concrete. At the high end of the cost spectrum are butcher block, granite, and custom exotic wood varieties. If you're on a budget, consider a less expensive surface for your countertops such as a manufactured stone and add a touch of luxury to the island.

Zackary Court owner of Victory Stone, grew up in Charlottetown and launched his business in August of 2012 after realizing there was a demand in the market for quality stone products. In the spring of 2013 Court opened at his current location on Mount Edward Road. "Initially the business was slow to start,” said Court. “It took a couple of years for people to realize there was a business in PEI that offered specialized stone products." Victory Stone offers local in-house fabrication of stone for kitchen counter tops, bathroom vanities, shower walls, fireplace surrounds and many other applications. With six full-time staff, they are busy year-round.

Victory Stone allows clients to choose their stone from the inventory of in-house slabs and offers them the ability to project layout on slabs to view veining, movement and colour that creates more appreciation for the material. "Like an artist offering a sketch of a proposed painting, we bring the client into the fold to ensure the crafted stone meets their expectations." Quality natural and man-made stone from around the world is what Victory Stone is pleased to offer to their growing clientele. They carry a vast selection of granite, soapstone, quartzite, marble and premium Silestone Quartz as well as a full line of masonry and landscape stone. In addition, Victory Stone offers stone consultation and design, custom fabrication and installation of natural and man-made stone. They can also source stone materials from around the world to meet their clients' demand.

Always innovating, Victory Stone has recently introduced laser-templating for precise measuring of stone projects along with many improvements including a water recycling system; new stone handling equipment as well as a new CNC bridge saw arriving from Italy in January. This new saw will help increase output capacity and meet the growing demand for quality stone products fabricated right here on PEI. "Given we are working with stone on a daily basis, we get to experience the unique characteristics of stone and what makes them one of a kind." said Court, "We can offer advice on which materials are best suited for the application which can be a challenge for other companies that don’t work with stone. Supplying quality stone products that are fabricated and installed by islanders for islanders is truly rewarding."

The stone industry is something that did not exist on PEI prior to Victory Stone setting up shop a few years back. As such, the people that form the Victory Stone team are positions that they created from the ground up. "We are very proud about this achievement." said Court, "We look forward to working with clients to create their personal style in stone for years to come."

This is what RE/MAX Charlottetown is all about.

A Dedicated Team of Professionals While the term “great customer service” is all too often loosely thrown around, the team at RE/MAX Charlottetown takes it very seriously. It’s refreshing, particularly in an industry that can move unsettlingly quickly, and is based largely on numbers. “We place a huge importance on meeting our client where they are, hearing and understanding what they are saying, and helping guide them through the process of meeting their needs,” Webster explains. “Sometimes it’s educating them on the market, sometimes it is having a

For Webster and her entire team of agents — who each thrive on being brave, taking risks, and dreaming big — an enormous importance is placed on providing first class service to every single client, no exceptions. “If you have ever experienced first class service, this will always become the mark against which everything else is measured,” Webster says. “Our goal is to be that measure; always looking to better serve our clients needs, always looking for ways to better serve our in-house processes to make everyone more efficient and always a step ahead.” No. 1 Real Estate Organization in Canada The team is obviously doing something right. For more than 20 years, RE/MAX has been the No. 1 real estate organization in Canada, and here in Charlottetown, it’s no different.

“One of our greatest strengths as a team is really being able to drill down and understand where our clients’ needs are coming from and helping them make informed choices about what they are buying or selling,” says Webster. “We attract hardworking, tenacious, driven agents with a focus on great client experience,” adds RE/MAX agent Melanie Press. “Mary Jane is very particular about the type of agent she recruits and it speaks volumes when you consider the quality agents we have, the business we practice and our proven, consistent results.” Whether clients are in the market for their starter home, have spent months (or even years) searching for their forever home, or are hoping to sell a property, the team at RE/MAX is entirely dedicated to providing a memorable experience you can walk away from feeling positive about. “As with all service industries, it’s about the experience you deliver,” says Press, who won an Executive Club Award during her first year in real estate, and went on to win the RE/MAX 100% Club Award each year that’s followed. “Nothing goes well 100 per cent of the time, especially in real estate where there’s so many factors to consider. It’s an incredibly stressful and emotional experience for some people, and some clients deal with that pressure better than others. For me, and all the agents here at RE/MAX, the key is to treat everyone as an individual and tailor the experience you offer to their personal needs and wants.” There’s no Realtor that can guarantee a quick, pain-free sale or purchase, says Press; it’s impossible to do that. “But a great agent can guarantee a high level of integrity, professionalism and a commitment to work 100 per cent for the benefit of their client and that is exactly what my business is built on,” she adds. A Realtor for Life For both Webster and Press, there’s a certain, undeniable privilege being chosen to help clients find their homes, and it’s an honour neither agent takes lightly.

“The word ‘home’ in itself is a very precious one and ‘home’ means so many different things to different people,” explains Press. “It’s safety, security — both financial and emotional — it’s where memories and major life decisions are made. It’s where people raise their families, welcome friends and connect through good times and bad. Ultimately, it’s a privilege that’s given to me by my clients, and one I take very seriously.” ▼ Melanie Press

EXPERT ADVICE HOME BUILDER

Features & Finishes 1. Structural Changes Darren MacKenzie Master Builder/Owner MacKenzie Builders Services Ltd.

One of the advantages of purchasing a custom home is the opportunity to select features and finishes that reflect your own personal tastes and lifestyle. Too many choices - so what’s a buyer to do?

Once you’ve chosen the house plan you’d like to use or have a concept drawing arrange to meet with your builder to discuss changes or amendments to the floor plan. Buyers who want to add rooms or garages, move doors or add a fireplace or recessed lighting, for example, need to make their structural changes early in the process because those changes may impact the building permit pulled by the builder. These types of changes — as well as any electrical or plumbing changes that would require walls to be opened — would also be costly to make after the home is completed. 2. Upgrades Remember that it might make sense to make certain upgrades after the build has begun. Cosmetic features in particular, such as paint, landscaping, lighting and plumbing fixtures, epoxy garage flooring, crown moulding, chair rails, window treatments and even certain appliance upgrades can often be made afterwards, particularly by homeowners who have a budget. 3. Builder Timeline

32

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

Follow your builder’s timeline to select other options or upgrades. Your builder will give general allowances for finishes and fixtures, i.e. a budget for flooring, lighting fixtures, etc. If the homeowner is concerned about budget this is an opportunity to take advantage of sales and bargains in the local market such as utilizing discount centres and even local thrifting options like the Restore or online shopping. Before making any second-hand purchase be sure to check with the builder to ensure the

product is suitable and safety checked. Getting a fantastic deal on a doublewide refrigerator is great, but if it requires changing the layout of the completed kitchen – the bargain isn’t such a great deal. 4. Start a Dream Board As you’re planning your new build go online or look through home décor magazines for ideas and collect everything in a binder or bookmark the pages online. Sites like Houzz. com allow you to search images, save your favourites and shop or source your picks. 5. Prepare a Budget Prepare a budget — and stick to it. Walking into a design centre is a little like being a kid in a candy store. You’ll see cabinets and granite and top-of-the-line flooring. To avoid overspending — and overextending yourself — prepare a budget before your shopping starts. 6. Needs Versus Wants Be flexible. Remember that you have a budget and that you may not be able to afford all of the extras you’d like, so prepare a list of must-haves and want-tohaves. 7. Resale Value Don’t over-customize. Of course, new-home buyers want their homes to reflect their personal style and taste. But, it’s important to consider the resale value, as well. Those lavender granite counter tops in the kitchen that you’re thinking about may make your home difficult to resell in a few years.

Before you start seriously shopping for your first home, you should determine what your needs and wants are. Don’t forget about closing costs Closing costs vary, and, as with Realtors, call a few lawyers who will gladly let you know about their service costs and expected closing costs.

3. Find a Realtor A great Realtor is like a great hairdresser – once you’ve found them you never want to let them go!

6. Go with your gut instinct If there’s doubt, if it feels not quite right, then, it isn’t. Never be bullied or bamboozled into buying something you’re not happy with or indeed working with someone you’re not happy with.

Don’t automatically go with the listing agent – And if you do and they disclose information about the owners, the owner’s motivation, that they can get you a better deal if you use them or disclose financial information (just to name a few things), walk away. rince Edward Island is home to many accomplished artists and craftsmen so you may be surprised to find one hiding in plain sight. Ideal Tiles and Bathrooms is situated in Cornwall and you can find not only tiles, hardwood flooring, laminates, tubs and taps, but also many unique, handcrafted wooden pieces for your kitchen or bathroom.

Ideal Tiles and Bathrooms have a full workshop where Jordan can build anything to make your bathroom project unique. Jordan designs and builds all different custom vanities, tables, and cabinets using local materials as much as possible. Any shape, size, colour, or design can be custom made with a variety of woods (oak, maple, willow or even reclaimed barn boards). If you can dream it, he will build it.

The family owned and operated business launched in 2016 by Julie Davies and is going from strength to strength. She works with her husband Mick, who is in charge of installs, and her son Jordan, who runs the workshop and is responsible for creating bespoke pieces for your home.

You will not find MDF, or particle board in any of their products. Each piece is built solid, to last, and is still affordable. No two pieces of wood are the same which provides a one of a kind piece of art just for you.

The Davies family originates from England; having vacationed here in 2008 they fell in love with the place and decided to make it their home in 2011. Having worked in construction in England, including renovations, bathrooms, and tiling, it was only natural they would continue on this path. Starting up a construction company on PEI in 2011 they noticed they were completing many bathroom renovations so decided to open up their own showroom, ensuring to only sell quality products that they would use themselves. Jordan’s passion is in designing and creating the custom vanities along with any other custom pieces customers ask for. When Jordan was in school, the wood shop class was asked to design and build something. Whilst the class was making birdhouses, pencil cases and small boxes, Jordan designed and built a solid oak washstand (vanity).

To complete your custom project they offer granite and quartz countertops and recently expanded the showroom to offer hardwood flooring, laminate and vinyl, as well as a custom built kitchen on display. Ideal Tiles and Bathrooms can complete your whole bathroom project from start to finish. Along with the vanities they also specialize in custom showers. They can create beautiful designs – they don’t just tile your walls, they design them. Bathrooms can be tailored to your own needs, whatever they may be. Or, if you prefer, they can supply the materials and some sound advice so you can embark on your own DIY project. Whatever your choice, take a trip to Cornwall today and start making your dream bathroom a reality. You can get it all at Ideal Tiles.

sing plush textures such as velvet will add depth to the room and is a simple way to make your space more interesting. Layering different textures is very important, you don’t want your room falling flat when it comes to texture. Adding some extra details to a piece can take it from good to amazing in no time. There’s little details that can be done to help create a more tailored piece. Adding nail heads, tufting the back cushion or even adding piping around the edge. Piping may not seem like it would make a big difference but trust me, it will take it to the next level. We are moving away from grey-brown earth tones and introducing rich jewel tones. Jewel tones have been on the rise for some time and I don’t see them slowing down anytime soon. The rich vibrant tones provide drama to a room, while adding style and colour to a space. Navy blue, emerald green and canary yellow are strong, bold colours that will make any piece stand out in the crowd.

Pattern is a great way to personalize a chair or sofa and to make it your own. Bold vibrant patterns are on the rise for upholstered furniture and are a great way to add a pop of colour and style to any room. Try using a large-scale pattern on a chair and a complementary smaller scale pattern on a toss cushion. Mixing patterns will give you that designer look. When you are ready to redo that old chair that was passed down from generation to generation, there’s one thing that is so important to consider. That’s why I am putting comfort into one of my trends. This is the time to decide if you want a firm seat or back. There’s many options to choose from which include different density of foam, memory foam, down wrapped, new springs, softness of fabric and cushion wrap to name a few.

EXPERT ADVICE E D U C AT I O N

Ann Myers Centre Director

Study habits that work. One of the most frequently asked questions by parents and students is, “What’s the best way to study for tests?” Although there isn’t a single guaranteed way, there are study tips and techniques that almost always work in combination with dedication and determination. Encourage your child to try these out before their next test!

Cramming doesn’t work. The “all-nighter” is a time-honoured strategy for getting through tests, right? Wrong! The human brain just isn’t made for cramming. If you want to learn something, put in the time to practice and master it. Just ask any accomplished athlete or musician. Neither does multitasking. Multitasking is a myth. It’s okay for everyday chores and activities, but for important tasks like studying, you cannot give 100 per cent of your attention to more than one thing. It’s simple arithmetic. Budget your time. Based on what kind of learner you are decide what routines work best for you. When are you at your best: Morning or nighttime? Take control of your time, your learning and your grades by dedicating yourself each day to keeping up with your studies. Be sure not to procrastinate! Need help figuring out what study habits work best? Sylvan’s Study Skills program can help point you in the right direction! Our teachers can help get you more organized, strategically plan projects and reach goals! Work with a study buddy. Learn from each other. Quiz each other. Support each other’s good habits. Remember, we retain what we first learn and what we last learn, so schedule plenty of short breaks.

Sylvan Learning 18 Superior Crescent, Charlottetown 902.367.3678 www.sylvanlearning.com

Keep up with the reading. Newsflash! You can’t keep up with class material, discussions or projects if you’re not up-to-speed. Do the daily drills and practice. Read the daily assignments. Make a list of things you don’t understand so you can ask about them. Be involved. Be active. Be in control.

Anticipate the test questions. It’s usually not too difficult to know which questions teachers will put on tests. Pay attention to what is stressed during class. What major points keep cropping up? What are favourite and recurring themes? What skills are stressed? What are the book’s chapter headings? If you were the teacher, what would you put on the test? Anticipate your answers. Prepare some possible answers, especially for short and long answer questions. Do you have enough information to fully answer the question? If not, keep working on them. Star athletes anticipate challenges, so do the same thing. Think ahead. Organize yourself. No matter what you’re working on in life, organization is guaranteed to help. Keep a planner with important test and assignment dates in it. Schedule study times alone and with study buddies. Keep notebooks and electronic material organized, so you can easily find what you need. If organization isn’t your thing, ask for help from friends, parents, or teachers. Take good class notes and review them regularly. Write or type the major themes and important information in class each day. Then, just like star reporters, interviewers and writers do, review them as soon as possible to make sure you’ve got it!. If you don’t, ask follow-up questions. Set goals. Be determined that this time you’re going to be serious about improving your test grades. Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, eat sensibly and use your common sense. Set yourself up for success, and you’re bound to do well! WINTER 2017

Through gentle movements, Jolliemore is helping him map connections between his brain and body and he is now moving his arms, legs, back and pelvis. “He is less spastic and doesn’t arch as much, and sleeps through the night,” reports his mother Emily. “He coos, reacts to sounds, smiles – and has really come to life.”

“We use words such as "teacher", "lesson", and "student" to emphasize that NeuroMovement is about learning, not therapy,” said Jollimore, now one of only two ABM-trained NeuroMovement teachers in the Maritimes. “The learning is based on the brain and the body connected as one. The brain learns through movement and movement is impossible without the brain.”

Four-month-old William, a premature twin born with a neurological disorder, was

NeuroMovement increases range of motion and decreases – or even eliminates – chronic pain in adults and can help restore function following a stroke. Due to a motor vehicle accident, Jollimore’s student Paula had lived in pain for more than 25 years, prematurely giving up her nursing career. After trying acupuncture, physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic treatments, she finally got pain relief from NeuroMovement lessons. “I began to feel different right away. Lorrie gently worked with my legs and hips, ‘showing’ my brain what movements could be done. That night, for the first time in many years, I was able to swing my right hip into bed smoothly and without pain,” said Paula. “Through ideal movements, my neural network learned different patterns and possibilities, allowing my body to start healing itself.”

This interest led Lorrie to a major career change, and she did begin to teach — but her classroom, students and lesson plans were not anything like she expected.

Normally a baby’s nervous system intelligently maps movements into its brain so they become natural. Babies born with physical impairments are unable to do this mapping; however, through NeuroMovement, the infant learns and maps ideal movement.

Continuing speech work has led to an increased vocabulary and a boost in the girl’s self-confidence.

Despite intense physiotherapy, stroke victim Carol was left with a spastic left hand and an inability to walk on her left heel. Through lessons with Lorrie, eight years after the stroke, Carol remapped her left body and ultimately achieved her goal of walking confidently on the grass for her daughter’s outdoor wedding. Bathurst, NB, mother Anna credits NeuroMovement with her daughter Rowan’s improved speech. While addressing physical limitations, Jollimore began incorporating different sounds into lessons and the girl started distinguishing between them and using them to form words.

Jollimore is thrilled with her new career and continues to be amazed at the results of her lessons. She operates Movement and Vitality at McKinnon Wellness in Charlottetown – and her daughter happily runs with her friends. WINTER 2017

In addition, she has added credentials specific to rowing, such as Schwinn Cycling, Indo-Row, and ShockWave. Capturing elements of competitive, on-water rowing, it focuses the mind while challenging the body in a team-building atmosphere. Shockwave marries functional strength training with short-burst, high intensity interval circuits, and has been dubbed one of the most efficient total body workouts out there. When we're young most of us are at our physical peak. When we reach our 30s and 40s, family and career become our priority.

5 4O reasons to stay fit after

Words by Jacqui Chaisson

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

As

we age, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a healthy body; there’s menopause, for starters, but many of us also have busy schedules, and lack the energy needed to exercise. And yet, we can’t stress enough why it’s so important to “commit to fit” – it’s about more than looking great. Here are just five reasons to maintain your fitness after 40. 1. Muscle Burns Fat, Even While Resting A body’s metabolism has a large role in how food is converted to energy. Those

who have a higher degree of muscle mass burn calories even when they’re at rest. As a person ages, metabolism naturally slows down, leading to gradual weight gain. Muscle is a great way to counterbalance the body’s natural slowdown, and the earlier a person starts, the easier it will be to maintain that muscle over time. 2. Building Muscle Delays Bone Loss As a person grows older, bone loss is inevitable, especially for women after menopause. This can cause bones to

break more easily, feelings of fatigue and weakness, and reduced tolerance to physical activity. Weight-bearing exercises strengthen bones, helping minimize natural bone loss and reducing the risk of injury. When a person lifts weights, it also builds strength and balance, which can help prevent falls. 3. Muscle Toning Improves Balance Balance has benefits beyond preventing injury. It comes into play no matter what you’re doing, whether it’s carrying groceries or climbing a set of stairs. Through strength training, you can more easily accomplish these tasks even as you get older. Muscle

5. You’ll Look Great As important as all of the other benefitsare, there’s just something to be said about looking great! When the weather heats up again (or if you plan to head south this winter), you’ll likely be wearing clothes that cover less territory – think shorts, sleeveless tops, and bathing suits. Work out and rock those outfits with total confidence. Conclusion It's never too late to be fit and healthy - or become fit and healthy. Start with small

toning also improves endurance during athletic activities, which will help you during those games of beach volleyball.

goals and talk to a fitness expert. Make this the year to quit smoking, give up the unhealthy eating and get active.

4. Strength Training

Being fit is a lifestyle choice no matter what your age may be and being fit means you'll live longer, healthier and be happier.

Strength training has been shown to provide a number of health benefits, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. By including strength training, you’ll reap the rewards of the hard work. Strength training can also improve a person’s mental health, reducing depression and improving sleep quality.

Isn't that what your goal should be? Remember to check with your doctor before beginning ay new exercise regime and start slowly. PEIL

Workout Challenges and Comrades at

CROSSFIT Words by Rebecca Spinner Photos: LaVie in Pictures

CrossFit 782 is a true success story. This local gym didn’t just outgrow its previous address—its membership has virtually doubled in about a year.

B

oth Mike Ives and his CrossFit 782 co-owner, Brett Roberts, seem excited that their gym now has more than 200 members. They’re especially enthusiastic about members’ diverse ages, genders, and fitness levels. “It’s open to everybody,” emphasizes Ives. Ages range from seniors to teens; Roberts coaches a 3:30 p.m. class especially for teenagers. Among people unfamiliar with CrossFit, Ives acknowledges, misconceptions about workout intensity aren’t unusual. However, he doesn’t describe CrossFit as punishing or elitist. Rather, he says, it’s a straightforward system consisting of efficient, varied workouts emulating natural body movements. “Workouts are sometimes long, sometimes

44

short. They combine gymnastics, weightlifting, running, and lots of other things.” While CrossFit is accessible, it’s also challenging. It’s “very popular with athletes and first responders,” Ives notes. Members can tweak workouts for their strengths and weaknesses, and the atmosphere is far from highpressure. On the contrary, members keep each others’ morale high. “The workouts are great. The coaching is rocksolid. But overall, CrossFit 782 is about community.” “It’s a positive, supportive environment people want to belong to,” agrees Roberts, who says members’ visits bolster “both physical and mental health.”

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

New arrivals at CrossFit 782 get their bearings at a complimentary intro class, subsequently learning the ropes through a private or semiprivate three-class Fundamentals Program. Following the Fundamentals Program, they’re free to attend classes and “open gym” hours as often as they choose. Both Ives and Roberts have trained in CrossFit for years —which, apparently, isn’t rare. “We have members who’ve been with us for a decade,” Ives says. However, “We want everyone to leave every class better than when they arrived, whether you’ve been with us ten years, or ten classes. At the end of the day, it’s you against yourself.”

The salon may not be front and centre, but it offers an individualized one-on-one experience second to none to its loyal clientele base. Sitting in the chic and cosy entryway of the salon, Caissie explained how he knew he always wanted to be in the hair industry, following in the footsteps of his mom who was a hairdresser years ago. “I was a little unclear of the industry on PEI because going into it, there wasn’t a lot of male hairdressers. It was a very undervalued industry as far as men,” he says. Following his studies in hairdressing at the acclaimed Marvel Beauty School in Yorkville, Toronto, Caissie worked for a leading high-end salon. He returned to Charlottetown where he has now taken his brand to new heights with his signature blonde balayage services at the Island’s only signature salon. The salon focuses mainly on blondes because Caissie knows the value in a client’s satisfaction when they leave his salon with the perfect customized blonde and exclusive hair treatments just for blondes. “Clients come in and say they’ve never been happy with their blonde. That makes why I do what I do,” he says. “Clients want the new, of-the-moment look or to achieve the level of blonde that they’ve always wanted, so hopefully I can do that.” One

Caissie swears by his signature techniques, being able to achieve perfect blonde looks for each client’s goals. He also says he can use the same technique on everyone, but it doesn’t look the same on every person’s hair style. “I’m literally painting on highlights, and it wasn’t done here before. It’s me just creating my brand on these girls, and some guys, but it gives you that look that is going to look classic and effortless.” In a world of social media, Caissie has also been able to tap into a major following on Instagram and Facebook by sharing photos of his work. He looks to his role models from a high-end salon in Los Angeles called Ramirez Tran Salon who started the whole before-and-after transformation posts on social media. “When I started doing beforeand-after photos people saw it on real people, on their friends. We all think we want that perfectly filtered look, but in the real world everyone is so individualized and I think that’s what makes us unique.” As trends come and go, Caissie is constantly educating himself on new techniques and tips of the industry, which he says is one of the most important things a stylist can do to stay relevant. “I think the hair industry has changed so much in the last three years, at least, where it’s not about coming in

On the Road to Success Go Girl Fashion and Accessories Words by Stephen Petrick Photos: Kirsten Stewart Photography

ou’ve heard of food trucks or ice cream trucks, but have you ever heard of a “Fashion Truck”?

If you know Paulette Barke you likely have. The Prince Edward Island native has a fashion business that runs partly on wheels. Her “Fashion Mobile “as she calls it, has been popping up at events and private parties on the Island for the past year as part of her business, Go Girl Fashions & Accessories.

▲ Paulette Barke

“We want every woman who comes through our doors to feel special and enjoy their shopping experience”.

Go Girl’s innovative Fashion Mobile is 25 feet long and has been retrofitted as a full boutique with change rooms inside. The Fashion Mobile is a fun and convenient option for women, especially in an era when the way people shop is constantly changing. Barke says that “While online shopping is convenient in many ways, being able to bring the actual product to women so they can touch and feel it and see what it looks like has its advantages. We are able to take our store on wheels straight to our customers providing them with the convenience of shopping from home with the benefit of actually seeing the product in person. We can customize the bus for private parties, festivals and any other events our customers want us to attend”. The Go Girl Fashion Mobile has stopped for events all the way from Tignish to Souris. In the spring of 2018, you will occasionally find the Go Girl Fashion Mobile across from the Charlottetown Farmers' Market in the UPEI parking lot. Barke started Go Girl Fashions & Accessories in August of 2009 by doing “pop up’s ‘' on PEI at the Credit Union Place in Summerside twice a year. As the business grew, she felt it was time for a “brick and mortar” location. This would allow her to regularly engage with customers and the business community of Summerside. With the encouragement of her husband and family, Paulette opened her permanent

store in May 2015, located at 215 Wyatt Crescent, Summerside. Having a permanent location, and a mobile store, Barke enjoys being connected to the city of Summerside as well as customers across the province. Barke supports the Summerside Rotary Club, The Boys & Girls Club as well as the Prince County Hospital’s fundraising golf tournament. She is a member of the Summerside Chamber of Commerce and the PEI Business Women’s Association. Paulette loves providing women with great fashions, carrying many lines from Canadian designers along with US and European designers. The Management and staff at Go Girl provide excellent service and are very knowledgeable in the latest, up to date fashion trends. Barke says, “We want every woman who comes through our doors to feel special and enjoy their shopping experience”. To Barke, Go Girl Fashions & Accessories is more than a business; it’s her commitment to a “passion for fashion”. Barke says, “Fashion can help women look at feel fabulous. At Go Girl, we pride ourselves in providing this customized customer service. It is a privilege to be part of Summerside community and to meet so many wonderful people across the Prince Edward Island." Paulette and her husband live in Calgary, but her desire is to retire on the Island where her family reside.

Perfect Venues and Menus MHG Catering & Events It’s impossible not to appreciate Prince Edward Island’s surreal beauty. When it comes to elegance and romance, the Island equals Niagara Falls or the Eiffel Tower. That makes PEI perfect for weddings—and, through Murphy Hospitality Group (MHG) Catering & Events, PEI-based nuptials can be celebrated in venues as charming as the Island itself. Charlottetown’s PEI Brewing Company is one such space. MHG Catering & Events General Manager Kelley Gillis calls the Brewing Company “extraordinary,” describing a mixed-media woodwork and brickwork interior that could easily complement diverse decorating schemes. Couples looking to highlight this unique venue might treat guests to a brewery tour, or a draft from a customized cask of beer. Furthermore, for those planning large-scale celebrations, the space can accommodate up to 500 guests. MHG Catering & Events’ RiverShed venue lies a short distance from Charlottetown, in the Oyster Bed Bridge area. Despite its 150-person capacity, this waterfront space strongly resembles one of the Island’s beloved “getaway” cottages, and features firepits perfect for late-night entertaining. Couples planning a winter wedding will likely fall for Fishbones (in warmer months, this capacity-120 event space is one of PEI’s finest seafood

restaurants). Fishbones’ interior could easily lend itself to a metropolitan, warehouse-style wedding: it’s a stylish--yet relaxed and unpretentious— space. Fishbones, the RiverShed, and the PEI Brewing Company all feature a menu by Culinary Institute of Canada graduate Chef Lincoln Key. “We focus on fresh, local products from local suppliers,” Gillis says. “Whether the event is for 30 or 300, guests still get restaurant-quality food.” The drink selection is chosen just as carefully. “The bar menu includes local, handcrafted ales,” says Gillis; at the PEI Brewing Company, “guests can drink beer that’s brewed in the same building!” The menu on MHG Catering & Events’ website speaks to Chef Key’s gift for chic, playful wedding fare. Couples can tempt guests with lobsters, smores, and even off-kilter delights like mashed potato martinis. And since MHG Catering & Events caters offsite, it’s possible to enjoy Chef Key’s menu even if you’ve already booked a venue. MHG Catering & Events builds “relationships” with clients, says Gillis, that can last 12 months or more. And—venues and menus aside—the company’s most appealing quality may well be their remarkably personal approach during that time. “We’re able to be part of someone’s big day. That’s the most exciting, special thing for us.”

The support MHG Catering & Events offers extends right up to a couple’s “I dos". On one occasion, Gillis recalls, an MHG pastry chef repaired a cake that had arrived from the baker damaged so flawlessly, that the bride never knew it had happened.”

Countless couples have searched endlessly for a venue and caterer so completely committed to wedding-day perfection--in PEI, however, newlyweds-to-be need only turn to MHG Catering & Events.

Kuriosities Jewelry

Connecting your love story to the Island Words by Katrina Geenevasen Photos: Courtesy of Kuriosities

The world looks different when your toes are wedged into the soft grains of PEI sand. Just ask Kimberly McIntyre, goldsmith, jewelry designer and owner of downtown Charlottetown’s Kuriosities. A handcrafted jewelry studio located on historic Victoria Row, Kuriosities utilizes traditional and modern jewelry techniques to create gorgeously unique pieces that each tell a unique story – perfect for a couple in the process of writing their own, real-life fairytale.

58

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

Creator of Sand Band A minimalist wedding band embossed with sand, Kuriosities is perhaps best known for its Sand Band, which is created with sand from the picturesque beaches of Prince Edward Island. “Many clients choose to gather their own sand from beaches that are dear to their hearts,” says McIntyre, who is passionate about honouring each of her clients’ stories. “Each may have their own special beach embossed, or choose to have a beach that is part of their love story.”

Why sand? “The ocean is an integral part of every Islander’s life,” explains McIntyre. “The rhythms of the tides, the salt in the air, the crashing waves. “To me, it means home. I use it in my work to honour that connection we have as Islanders to our home. Many of us travel away to find work, to study, or to follow our dreams. It is a tangible symbol of our Island home that we can carry with us until we can return.”

Whether you choose your band to be created from sterling silver, or yellow, rose, or white gold, Kuriosities places a huge focus on using recycled metals whenever possible. The material has been refined to ensure the highest quality pieces that will last a lifetime, assures McIntyre. Not only that, all diamonds are ethically-sourced and certified conflict-free. A History in Creation McIntyre has been passionate about art and storytelling for as long as she can remember. “I was never without a notebook, sketchpad or paint,” she says. From the time she was just a little girl, there was also always something about gems that she found fascinating. “I fell in love with an amethyst bracelet, and through my obsession with it, decided I needed to uncover how it was made,” she explains. “That started the whole ball rolling 16 years ago, and I have never looked back.” Part of the draw is that there is always something new to work on in jewelery, a new skill to master, a new teacher to study under, a new trick from fellow jewelers. “It is endlessly fascinating to me,” says McIntyre.

A Passion for Her Craft For McIntyre, there’s no such thing as a dull day at the office. “I never stop designing in my head,” she says. “It is never quiet in there! There is something immensely satisfying in taking the pictures from my brain and making them tangible. To me, it is magic. I am constantly excited by what I do, and always striving to reach the next level. I love it all.” It seems this PEI jeweler is doing something right. Her pieces are worn by more than 75 thousand people, including many wellknown musicians and celebrities. It’s not a number — or an honour — she takes for granted. After all, nothing beats knowing her bands are worn by couples in love. “It is so exciting to be included in their special day, and to create pieces that they will wear daily for the rest of their lives together,” she says. “I love when couples come into the shop after their wedding and show me their wedding photos, and love watching as their new families grow. It has made me fall even more deeply in love with this Island, and our community.”

Your Very Own Custom Creation Schedule a free 30-minute design consultation with the studio’s designer to create a piece unique to your own story. Come with ideas and a budget in mind. Book your wedding bands as soon as possible. Allow eight weeks for simple bands and up to 13 weeks for more complicated designs or designs that include stones that may need to be sourced.

Hazelbrook Homestead On a snowy day in 2016, Savannah Belsher-MacLean and her husband Todd MacLean laid eyes upon Hazelbrook Homestead for the very first time. Despite the state of disrepair, it was, as the saying goes, love at first sight. Constructed in 1880, the newly restored Hazelbrook Homestead gives a whole new meaning to the term “hidden gem”; accessed only by a long, winding driveway, Hazelbrook Homestead is located just 10 minutes away from downtown Charlottetown but completely hidden from view. Its property – which comes complete with accommodations for 10 people, 60 acres of farmland, and a large fresh water pond – makes it the perfect venue for weddings. Hosting an intimate celebration? Consider hosting your wedding in the home’s grand room, which BelsherMacLean explains has been decorated with simplicity in mind to allow couples to make the room their own for their big day. If, on the other hand, your wedding needs to accommodate hundreds, you can rent a tent and exchange your vows next to the property’s beautiful freshwater pond. “Whatever the vision is for your wedding day, you’ll be able to do it here,” explains Belsher-MacLean.

If you’re tying the knot in 2018, know this: whatever dreams you have for your big day, you can trust Hazelbrook Homestead to make them come to life in a beautiful way.

The Perfect Pear Bridal Whether you’re exchanging your vows on a sandy, windswept beach in front of close friends and family, or tying the knot in a glamorous ballroom, one thing is certain: you need a great wedding dress that makes you feel like you’re falling in love all over again the moment you see yourself in it. The Perfect Pear Bridal – with its wide and impressive collection from top designers – is guaranteed to have it. Owned and operated by Kelly Moorehead – who ensures all brides are given the star treatment the moment they walk in the door – Perfect Pear Bridal provides an intimate environment to try on as many dresses as you need to before you find the one that makes your heart beat as wildly as your intended does. Each bride is given a private lounge and a dedicated consultant that promises to make the already memorable experience that much more unforgettable.

“We try and make everyone feel comfortable,” says Moorehead. “We have lots of energy, and we like to show that! We have a great time doing what we do. We have had lots of girls come in nervous about trying gowns on, and we like to make them feel comfortable and at ease.” Offering gowns from industry leaders such as Essence of Australia, Maggie Sottero, and Bonny Unforgettable, brides of all shapes and sizes will love the selection of stunning, figure-flattering gowns, which feature the highest quality fabrics and intricate detailing. Your love story is uniquely beautiful – make sure your dress is, too.

Caley Joy Photography “Who doesn’t love a good love story?” asks Caley Aylward, who has been behind the lens for more than 13 years. She’s humbled when couples choose to hire her to photograph their wedding day because she knows she’s being entrusted to capture moments that are truly once in a lifetime. “I believe in capturing the natural romance of the fleeting moments, and creating timeless imagery for them to look back on.” Be sure also to inquire about Caley's custom wedding invitations. Relics of Oceanic Romance Jeanette Walker Jewellery

Twenty-five years ago, a young jewelry designer set out to do something a little differently. Her goal was to create pieces that not only reflected the wearers’ core values, personality, and style, but also held deep personal meaning, would stand the test of time and never go out of style. Fast-forward to 2017, and it’s clear Jeanette Walker — who comes from three generations of metalsmiths — has done just that, and more. Her studio, co-owned with her husband Lindsay and located in an historic building in Charlottetown, is filled with jaw-dropping examples of finely-crafted pieces, each collection a testament to the designer’s true artistry and raw, unparalleled talent.

4. 5.

6.

The Power of Uniqueness Walker believes in the power of every client’s unique story, taking what she learns to create the perfect custom design. “Each one of my clients has their own personality and desires,” she says. “By listening carefully, I intuitively translate thoughts and emotions into a design perfectly sculpted for the individual.”

1. “Pink Sapphire Twist”rings: for the alternative bride. 14kt white and yellow gold stacking rings set with a pink sapphire and opals. 2. “Smooth Sailing” Wedding Set: The gold and diamonds were re-purposed from the couple’s original wedding set to celebrate their 20th year of wedded bliss.

7.

3. “Smooth Sailing” wedding ring: men’s version to match #2.

8.

4. “Bubbles & Wake” ring: the yellow gold and diamonds were re-purposed from unworn and outdated vintage family jewellery.

“I am such a big fan of your sand casting and I loved seeing the stories of the past bands you made, especially those that include sand from memorable places. I’ve been collecting sand from Cleveland (my birthplace), Latvia (my heritage), Venice (where we met) and am waiting to get sand from Hawaii (where Troy was born). The bands are such a beautiful representation of our two lives coming together to start a new journey. Thank you for making this most beautiful artistic expression of our momentous day!" - Client ▲ Jeanette Walker (Photo: Lans Photography) Designed with the Earth in Mind Walker takes care to design and create her one-of-a-kind pieces in a sustainable manner. “Being kind to the Earth and its creatures is important to me,” she says. “It’s important to me to minimize my footprint, while creating romantic, nature-inspired pieces that keep Earth in mind.” Indeed, Walker is not concerned with chasing the latest trends or creating staid, uninspired pieces. Rather, she strives to design jewelry for nature and ocean lovers. “My business focuses on being eco-ethical friendly,” she says. “I’ll often repurpose a client’s heirloom or outdated jewelry.” All of the diamonds she uses are recycled or laboratory grown, but she also uses a lot of customers’ diamonds passed down from family. “I’ll take peoples’ materials and design around what they have,” she explains, showcasing a gorgeous stacking ring she created for a customer using vintage diamonds and gold. It’s been especially popular for those seeking a one-of-a-kind engagement ring or wedding band. “Adding a loved one’s gemstones or gold is a beautiful way to honour the past and imbue your new piece with personal history and meaning,” she says. Since heirloom jewellery often carries precious

memories and emotions, it’s an honour for her to listen to the stories behind these pieces. “It’s what makes my work meaningful,” she says. Walker also specializes in redesigning anniversary pieces. “People who have been married for 20 years will bring in their original wedding set and then I’ll melt that down and make them something new.” Ancient Techniques, Modern Masterpieces Using ancient jewellery-making techniques, Walker has perfected the art of sand casting, amalgamation of metals and granulation. “These slow techniques create collections of modern sophistication,” she explains. “However, each piece of jewellery carries a flavour of the past and has a unique old-world appeal.” Jewelry Designs with Personality and Soul

9. Walker believes jewelry made by human hands has personality and soul, and it only takes one glance at her work to know this is inherently true. “From the first pencil sketches to the final polish, my creations are wrought by hand, eye and heart,” she explains. It only takes one glance at her work to know this is inherently true.

5. “Beach Love” Engagement Ring: made using client’s family heirloom gold. The recycled 14kt white and yellow gold was cast in beach sand collected from the couple’s favourite beach.

8. “Beach Sand” textured wedding bands: sand was collected from four beaches in different parts of the world creating a unique and meaningful texture on their wedding bands.

6. “Seagrass & Red Sand” wedding bands: 14kt rose and white gold wedding rings inspired by the ocean landscape.

9. “Twist” Rings: recycled yellow gold and recycled diamonds were used to create dainty stacking rings for the alternative bride.

Our ‘antispa’ beauty bar concept offers efficient but impeccable services. - Kelsey MacDonald

Do you think of manicures and pedicures as just an occasional way of pampering yourself? Regular manicures and pedicures actually provide great benefits for your overall health and well-being, especially in cold and harsh weather. It's a wonderful way to reduce stress, relax and catch up with friends. In the past the only options for manicures and pedicures were local spas and they rarely offered a quick or walk-in service. On Mother’s Day 2016 that changed when the The Ten Spot opened its doors on Queen Street, downtown Charlottetown. There is no better pick-up on a gloomy winter day than a girl's' day that includes a mani/pedi from The Ten Spot. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between upscale spas offering ultra elaborate services and, at the other end of the spectrum, the cheap and sometimes questionable chop shops,” explains owner, Kelsey MacDonald, “Our ‘antispa’ beauty bar concept offers efficient

but impeccable services. No one wants to spend half the day getting monthly beauty maintenance services; we focus on efficient services, while maintaining service excellence, so our guests can be in and out, and leave looking and more importantly feeling awesome. We want you to leave feeling like a 10, your most confident and best self.” The Ten Spot doesn’t cut corners and offers little extras like a complimentary toe wax with each pedicure and brow touch-ups after waxes. They also offer complimentary sparkling water and espresso and welcome anyone to pop in for a complimentary skin analysis or a lash consultation. The Ten Spot offers manicures and pedicures; waxing and laser hair removal (including their signature brazilly service for both); Dermalogica facials; and brow and lash tints. “Our manicure/pedicure area and waxing rooms are super comfy and equipped with

Netflix so you can catch up on Stranger Things or This is Us while taking care of your bikini line, or getting a polish job.” Said MacDonald, “We offer a selection of red, white and sparkling wine (and make a great mimosa), as well as beer and cider to enjoy while you relax.” Each of the six certified esthetic experts goes through an intense amount of reeducation for all of the service protocols before they can be approved to perform services. This ensures the guests receive a consistently incredible experience. Because The Ten Spot is part of a franchise system, clients benefit from the incredible amount of effort and investment that goes into making sure that the products and services they offer are the best around.

The Ten Spot recently launched laser hair removal. The laser is the safest and most effective on the market for hair removal and it works on all skin and hair types including people with blonde or red hair, or with darker skin complexions. “Our laser machine is the only one on the market that has a patented skintel technology that measures the melanin content of your skin and automatically sends that information back to our diode laser, so your service is tailored to your unique hair colour and skin type,” said MacDonald. “We take a new reading of every area of the body to ensure the safest, most effective treatment. We’ve been getting amazing feedback from guests who have been in for services, and have seen great results. They’re also surprised by how quick and pain-free it is.”

EXPERT ADVICE B R I D A L M A K EU P

Simply Natural

Sabrina Bigalow Makeup by Sabrina Sierra

Wedding Day Makeup That Suits Every Bride Choosing the perfect makeup look is one of the countless decisions a bride has to make when it comes to her special day. Need inspiration? Look no further.

This is for ladies out there that like to keep things light and fresh. For your big day, opt for neutral colours for the eyes, like taupes or light mauves, and complete the look with a couple coats of mascara. For a bit of added drama, consider applying just a few individual false lashes. Pair with a rosy, glossy lip, and you’re ready to shine your way down the aisle.

70

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

Make your love-filled eyes pop with a shimmer lid with warm transition shades in the crease and darker tones towards the outer corner of the eye. Complete your look with a brown or black gel liner and beautifully wispy false lashes for all-day wear. Finish with a lip stain or liquid lipstick to really make your look pop.

Subtle Glamour Divinely Dramatic This look is for brides-to-be that enjoy wearing a little bit of makeup, but still want to keep their look fresh-faced and natural. Experiment with some light contouring, and medium coverage foundation on the skin. Enhance your eyes with darker tones, and add a little shimmer for some drama on the lids. Finish with some pencil liner and natural lash inserts. Finally, swipe your pretty pout with a light rose or pink lip stain to keep lips looking luscious and first-kiss ready. Traditionally Timeless

Makeup by Sabrina Sierra @makeupbysabrinasierra 902.439.5001

Your wedding day skin will look flawless in a medium-to-full-coverage foundation with a powder contour, while highlighter added to your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose and cupids bow will give you a dewy glow.

Traditional looks are probably the most requested look in the bridal world.

Dramatic makeup is not for the faint of heart. This look is on the heavier side, including fullcoverage foundation, cream contouring and highlighter to emphasize cheekbones. Sometimes, a thicker liner and glitter is added to the eye or a darker lid shade may be chosen. For lovely lashes, double up. Unbeatably gorgeous drama will be yours in the blink of an eye! When it comes to your lip shade, look for colours that are darker and more intense; your groom won’t be able to resist your lusciously lovely lips.

BRI DAL NAILS Getting the perfect wedding day manicure is easier than you think and should never be overlooked. Here are some simple steps to having picture-perfect nails on your big day.

Test-drive different shades Certain shades look better on different skin tones, so test out different shades in the months leading up to the big day. For an elegant look, try a classic French manicure. Once you've found your perfect shade stock up. One for the salon, one for your wedding day emergency kit and one to pack in your honeymoon bag.

It isn't the end of the world if you chip your polish. Use the tip of the brush to fill in the hole, then let the polish dry for 30 seconds. Next, brush on a second coat of polish and finish with a thin clear top coat.

To Gel or not to Gel Note that some traditional nail polishes are chip “resistant” but not chip free. A Gel polish sets (or cures) under a UV light. Sometimes Gel is known by some of its brand names like “Colour Gloss” or “Shellac”. Lastly, a gel top coat is applied and the nails are again set under the UV. Gel polishes should be done only one or two days before your wedding. Keep it simple We're all for a fun nail design, but if you're not usually a "glitter and appliqué" kind of girl, your wedding day isn't the time to experiment with nail art. Don't Forget Hand Cream It's amazing what moisturizing your hands can do for your pictures. Massage cream into your cuticles and knuckles before your photographer takes close-ups of your bouquet or ring for instantly younger looking hands.

tips for a stress-free wedding day Words by Jacqui Chaisson

You've planned it since you were a little girl, a fairy-tale day with all eyes on you - the perfect bride. The day has arrived and you're stressed and agonizing over everything that could go wrong. Here's a few tips to ensure your big day is the beginning of your 'happily ever af ter'. Invite Mother Nature

Arrange for a 'helper'

Be a couple

No one can control the weather so don't let it stress you out! Formulate a 'what-if' plan that can be implemented smoothly. Most venues will have an indoor space available so ask before you book.

Assign a good friend, sister or maid-ofhonour to cater to your needs on the big day. Have someone to help you get dressed, keep you organized, be your bathroom buddy or post on your social media.

Don't ignore your new spouse after the ceremony. Greet and mingle with your guests as a couple - it's your day.

Have a 'day-of' organizer Hire someone or choose a wedding guest to act as 'day-of coordinator' to ensure the details are looked after and any emergencies are handled. Keep your schedule free Don't plan a lot of activities for the wedding day. Plan your manicure and spaday for the day before the wedding so you can relax before you walk down the aisle. Don't micro-manage Trust in the professionals you've hired for your big day. Don't check out the venue or do any follow-ups with flowers or caterers on the day. 72

www.pei-living.ca WINTER 2017

Keep track No one wants to spend their wedding night in the bathroom. Have a drink-buddy who will keep track of your alcohol intake and ensure you'll enjoy yourself without the morning regret. Have a photography schedule Include a photography schedule in the invitations so everyone who needs to be included in wedding day photographs will be aware of where and when they need to be available.

Imperfect can be memorable Don't stress if something goes wrong - it's the quirky things that you'll fondly remember. The torrential downpour will make a wonderful anniversary story. Clear the air Talk about the day with family and friends and explain how you may not be able to be attentive to everyone. Feelings may get hurt because someone could feel they were ignored or overlooked. Remember what's important This is your wedding day - have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The most important thing to remember: this is your day. Be prepared for things to go wrong but don't stress about the small details. Your family and guests will focus on just how happy the bride and groom were on their special day - you should too.

e v o L r u o Y e r e h W Story Begins Clinton Hills Rustic Barn Venue

N

estled in a breathtaking valley surrounded by rolling hills and private woods sits a gorgeous, weather-worn barn that, for the past four years, has played host to the love stories of countless couples. While many adjectives have been used to describe Clinton Hills — from stunning, to breathtaking to magical — there’s perhaps only one way to describe this rustic wedding venue: an absolutely pictureperfect place to get married.

And it’s not just the venue itself that’s truly remarkable; the food is, as well. Led by Chef Duncan Smith, Broadway 45 Catering Services works tirelessly with each couple to ensure delectable meals that brides, grooms, and guests will savour until the last, mouth-watering bite.

Clinton Hills is perfectly located in the golden triangle of PEI’s major centres, Charlottetown, Summerside and Cavendish. As well, it is situated just a short drive from the Confederation Bridge and the primary airport.

The seasonally inspired menu, developed with the Farm-to-Table philosophy in mind, combines the bounty of East Coast waters and the finest of locally grown produce.

die for,” gushes Courtney and Brett Judson, who became husband and wife at Clinton Hills in October, 2016.

For hors d’ oeuvres, couples can choose from everything from salad rolls and pulled pork sliders, to rustic Italian Bruschetta.

By combining rustic country charm with contemporary personal conveniences, Clinton Hills is redefining the traditional country venue, says Maribeth Roberts, who co-owns the venue with her husband, George. “The barn, with its cathedral ceiling, rustic beams, and original wood floor creates a warm, homey feeling that is priceless,” she says. Whether couples choose to exchange their vows in the enchanting woods, while overlooking the spectacular panoramic views of the Southwest River, or in the courtyard next to the barn, they’re guaranteed one thing: dazzling memories that will last a lifetime. “Our goal is simple: to create an occasion or an experience for all attending that is memorable, heartwarming and has that ‘wow’ factor for years to come,” says Roberts. The main loft, which presently accommodates 165 people on the main level and another 20 in the upper section, is what Roberts proudly calls the venue’s “showcase.” This winter, Clinton Hills will be undergoing a number of renovations, which will only elevate the already stunning venue. “We’re getting ready for an exciting 2018 season,” says Roberts. Changes include the addition of a brewery, landscape updates (including a new pond and a romantic fire pit), and the enlargement of the already gorgeous loft. Once the renovations are complete, the breathtaking space will have the ability to hold 200 people.

It seems the venue is onto something. In 2017, Clinton Hills was named by Weddingbells magazine as one of Canada’s Loveliest Venues; it’s an honour Roberts is justifiably pleased with. “From our very humble beginnings in 2011, when we started to transform a tired, and neglected dairy barn, I can’t begin to tell you what it has meant to us to be bestowed with this distinction,” she says. “It is truly an honour to be chosen from wedding venues from across the country from coast-to-coast.

“Our goal is simple: to create an occasion or an experience for all attending that is memorable, heartwarming and has that ‘wow’ factor for years to come.” The main dish promises to be just as spectacular; there’s everything from steak and salmon dishes to stuffed bell peppers and traditional lobster dinners. To end the romantic evening on an even sweeter note, couples can choose from a wide assortment of options, including New York-style cheesecake, layered trifle, and chocolate almond torte. “Our wedding menu is not a cookie cutter version,” explains Roberts. “We take great pride in following the couple’s wish list, after all, it is their special day.” Countless couples married at Clinton Hills gush about the delectable meals served during their wedding. “The food was to

“This latest honour continues to empower us to do what got us here in the first place. Our staff will continue to pour their hearts out passionately to make each couple’s wedding day dreams come true.”

“My preference on the wedding day is to simply capture things as they unfold, not to pose or stage anything,” says LaVie, who owns LaVie In Pictures. “Making a connection with my clients is very important; I want them to feel like I am just an extension of their family for that day and know that I would treat their ▲ Shawn LaVie 76

wedding like it was my own.”

Shawn LaVie, wedding photographer extraordinaire, uses images to tell stories – but he’s a storyteller, not a story maker. At each wedding he photographs, he lets moments unfold on their own and captures them with his camera, as opposed to setting up posed shots. LaVie, a native of Souris, P.E.I., runs his business with his wife, Jennifer, a wedding expert in her own right. She created her wedding planning business, Kiss The Bride, in 2007, and LaVie is an integral part of her business as well, as they have worked together as a team for the past six years. The couple know how much work and how much pride rests in every wedding “and that gives us a huge advantage when photographing a wedding,” says LaVie. He says one of the keys to shooting a wedding successfully is getting to know the clients beforehand. That includes getting to know about their family and their weddingday vision. “This helps me to be able to anticipate the moments of the day and to be on the lookout for those key things that, unless you knew about them, otherwise may not be captured. It helps with my clients’

comfort level on the day of the wedding as well.” While LaVie is a creative person, he doesn’t aspire to shoot “perfect” wedding photos. “People sometimes get intimidated by styled photos that are seen online, and worry that their wedding will never look that way. They are probably right. My ideal client is not concerned with wanting everything to look ‘perfect’; rather they understand that what makes their wedding perfect is the imperfection, the uniqueness that is only their relationship, their day,” he says. “I like to say that I see perfection in the imperfection and always try to approach each wedding with an editorial mind frame. There’s nothing like capturing true emotion in a photograph.”

And Prince Edward Island often provides him a great backdrop for capturing great moments. “P.E.I. is home and always has been,” he says. “Having worked along side of my wife for the last six years in the wedding industry here, I can honestly say, it is also one of the most amazing places to come to have a wedding. It’s a huge destination wedding location in Canada. So many people who have absolutely no ties at all to the Island are coming here and bringing hundreds of people with them for their weddings. Who can blame them? We get to live in a place where — especially in the summer — everywhere you look there is so much beauty.”

♥ Beautiful potted floral arrangements make wonderful centrepieces; and can double as wedding favours your guests can take home to become planted memories. ♥ Moss and ferns make stunning and impactful greenery for bouquets and flower arrangements, and are a great way to incorporate native greenery into your motif. ♥ Include a field guide in your wedding invitation or program with local trees and plants that can be found in the area, and give the guests an opportunity to learn more about our forests and wilderness. ♥ Wedding favours like handmade jars of jams, jellies, or other preserves make unique and thoughtful wedding favours for your big day. Personalized packets of wildflowers or other non-invasive seeds are simple symbolic ways to spread your love of the wild with your guests. ♥ Nature inspired wedding bands: Gold or silver fused with high-quality wood make, eye-catching wedding bands. Capture their beauty on your big day by arranging them on a leaf or flower to be photographed. ♥ Choose wildflowers from your backyard for your bouquet and evergreen boughs or willow branches strung with twinkling lights to decorate your tables and chairs. ♥ Use natural materials like burlap, linen or canvas (painter's drop-cloths are cheap and easy to find) for table cloths, runners or chair covers. Wrap natural hemp rope or twine in floppy bows instead of ribbon for bouquets. ♥ Choose a colour palette that is inspired by nature; sage green, berry red and faded blues and grays. ♥ Simple natural items like branches, fallen leaves, berries or grasses and reeds can add a dramatic and rustic element to your wedding décor. The bonus is most of these can be found objects.

Professionally developed and clinically tested, Aveda products feature plant-based, organic ingredients that deliver high-performance results, says MacIsaac . When combined with the restorative touch of our skilled spa therapists, the results speak for themselves. “We have specialized services for the bride and recommend a consultation three to six months in advance to review any concerns and formulate a schedule of appointments leading up to the big day." You've decided that she's the one and you're ready to pop the question. Your next destination should be Taylor's Jewellers in the Confederation Court Mall in the heart of downtown Charlottetown.

Since 1879, Taylor’s Jewellers has built a heritage in the fine jewellery and watch business on Prince Edward Island based on integrity, trust and courteous service. They are proud to feature Maple Leaf Diamonds, fine jewellery and exceptional time pieces. Retrieved from Northern Canada, Maple Leaf Diamonds are recognized for its natural and unprocessed diamonds stamped with the maple leaf insignia. Maple Leaf Diamonds were formed over three-billion years ago in Northern Canada where they lay dormant, under the frozen tundra, waiting to be discovered. Today, the pristine Canadian North has become symbolic of the purity and beauty of these Canadian diamonds, which are ranked among the world’s most exquisite and brilliant gems. These natural and untreated diamonds bear a distinct maple leaf insignia and tracking number that traces the journey of each diamond from the rough crystal to the finished treasure, guaranteeing its Canadian origin.

A Maple Leaf Diamond is an added Value because Canadian diamonds are ethical, conflict free and local. There are several factors to consider when you’re shopping for an engagement ring. Every woman’s style is different, but there are nonetheless some basics that every guy should know… Diamonds are graded according to the four "cs", clarity; colour; cut and carat weight. Taylor's Jewellers can guide you through the process of choosing a stone or stones for custom pieces or a beautifully designed ring on display in the showroom. People are

usually interested in the size and sparkle of the diamond. More sparkle, or brilliance, makes the diamond more desirable.

There are basically three popular settings for the engagement ring: SOLITAIRE With a centre stone atop a simple but elegant gold band, the solitaire is a timeless and classic style. It can become an instant family heirloom. HALO A “halo” is a ring of gems—typically diamonds— around the centre stone, like the petals of a flower around its pistil. THREE-STONE What’s better than one beautiful diamond? Three of them! The three-stone style is a beautiful alternative to the traditional solitaire engagement ring. The three diamonds are often said to represent the past, the present, and the future. The three-stone is a versatile piece of jewellery, appropriate for engagement, anniversary, or even birthday presents.

Taylor's other services include appraisals, ring restoration and sizing, claw re-tipping, watch batteries, watch band replacements, engraving and in-store jewellery cleaning. Taylor’s Jewellers is the exclusive Canadian dealer of AWC watches; beautiful timepieces in stylized and elegant designs, all made and finished to Swiss quality standards.

EXPERT ADVICE FINANCIAL

Leaving An Inheritance Jeff Somers, BA, AIT, CFP, RRC Executive Financial Consultant

Until recently, passing down an inheritance was something to be expected. Parents would save enough money so their kids would receive some sort of windfall that they could then put toward their own retirements.

Not everyone wants to leave an inheritance. But several studies over the last few years have shown that some boomers plan to spend what they have instead of passing it on. While Canadian data on this subject is sparse, a recent Australian study* found that one-fifth of baby boomers plan on dipping into their kids' inheritance to take trips. A 2016 U.K. study** found that one-sixth of people between 50 and 70 plan to spend all of their money before they die, while a 2014 report*** indicated that 66 per cent of people between 50 and 65 would rather spend their money than pass it on to their children. Christine Van Cauwenberghe, Vice-President, Tax & Estate Planning at Investors Group says that, in her experience, most boomers still want to pass down something to their children but many will likely end up spending a much larger chunk of their savings in retirement than their parents would have. "When boomers do a financial plan, it might become clear that they'll need the majority of their assets to support themselves, especially as they age and the need for costly medical care escalates.

Another option is for boomers to hang on to their house until they die or until they have to move into an assisted living facility. The children can then sell the home and take the proceeds as an inheritance. This option can become difficult when the boomer parents have their retirement money tied up in their house — meaning they'll have to sell to access those funds. Whether to spend what they have now or pass some of it down is a decision that should be made through frank discussions between boomer parents and their kids. "Everyone should know what's happening," says Van Cauwenberghe. "Explain your motivations and be sure your true legacy is not just about money, but support for everyone's plans for the future." Your professional advisor can help you make the financial and legacy decisions that are best for you. *https://www.seniors.eom.au/news-insights/seniorsabroad-the-australian-seniors-series ** http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3818803/ The-baby-boomers-spending-kids-inheritance-Onesix-50-70- year-olds-say-plan-use-money-die.html

"People may need to use the money they've saved, but still want to leave something to their children. Insurance is one way to do both."

***Baby boomers spend the inheritance rather than pass it on, Financial Times: https://www.ft.com/content/9b4a7bfe-5933-ll e49546-00144feab7de

If boomers buy life insurance, and if they continue making payments throughout their life, their children will receive the policy benefits upon the parents' death. The parents can then spend more of their money during their lifetime.

CUSTOM CLOTHIERS

efined taste has come to Charlottetown and it's customized to suit you.

Alexander Peters has transformed a passion into a new business venture with the creation of Raffiné Custom Clothiers. Buying a bespoke garment is an experience that is like no other. Choosing a custom garment ensures it is made specifically for your body, and being able to choose the style, cut and fabric means the garment is designed with you in mind.

"There is much more than meets the eye with bespoke garments", says Peters, "Beautiful garments hold pride for both the maker and the client who gets the joy of wearing something that fits, looks, and feels right. I want to provide Islanders with that experience for many years to come." Peters uses a manufacturer based out of Toronto who creates the garments. They have workshops in both Toronto and China but any finishing touches are done locally. From the first consultation to when the client picks up their garment is four to six weeks.

"A majority of the fabrics I have on hand are natural fibres, such as wool, cotton, and cashmere in a variety of colours, patterns, texture and weight." In the next months, Raffiné will be expanding its services to the Atlantic Canada region and adding more accessories to the showroom allowing clients to choose a customized look from head to toe.

LIVE @ the Centre Words and photos CCOA

Maybe it’s cold outside, but Confederation Centre is turning up the heat

with Live @ the Centre going full blast until May! Here’s some hot ideas to tempt you off your cozy couch and into the warmth of our theatres. ▲PSS... PSS...

Best Deals in Town: If you are looking for a great deal and a little nudge to check out some performers you may know less about, then the Songwriter Series is just the ticket(s)! Centre regulars love The Mack venue for its intimate atmosphere and cabaret style. This year’s three-part series features Old Man Luedecke on March 3, Hillsburn on April 6, and Fortunate Ones come to The Mack April 27. Purchase tickets to all three shows and save 25 per cent. Best Deal #2: Pay what you can (yes, really!) to see the fascinating PSS... PSS...by Baccalà on March 21. The two-man/circus show of mishaps and acrobatics is described as brilliant, tender, hilarious, ingenious… and… inventive, exciting, and ridiculous! Rock’n’roll Chameleon Two years ago, Islanders were surprised and impressed by Billy McGuigan, a performer that took on the ambitious challenge of a rock’n’roll survey show – all the way from 50s hits to the psychedelic 60s, through to the groove of the 70s and 80s – and he rocked it! Billy McGuigan’s Rock Show is also interactive – tell him what you want to hear at the top of the show or intermission and see what the chameleon comes up with! Relative Zones of Comfort If getting off your couch means moving ever so slightly out of your comfort zone, then Confederation Centre’s 2018 Live @ the Centre line-up is designed for you. Montréal-based band from Chad H’SAO has been capturing a lot of attention lately. The band’s blend of modern sound and traditional African musical influences draws from gospel, soul, R&B,

reggae and Chadian music. Come down to The Mack and meet brothers Caleb (guitar), Mossbass (bass) and Izra L (keyboard) along with their childhood friend Dono (drums). Conversant with classical, or down with hip hop? Why not change it up and check out how the other musical half lives? Atlantic String Machine are already turning their February 24 show “on its ear” by reversing the room: the audience will be seated on the Homburg Theatre stage while the talented string musicians perform on the thrust edge. On April 27, Classified, the platinum-selling rapper from Enfield, NS, presents a stripped-down acoustic show for one night only. Classified’s lyrics deal with topics like personal struggle, fatherhood, and his artistic journey; this special performance will also feature invited guests and musical collaborations. Insider Tip If you have never attended a concert in Confederation Centre’s Art Gallery, please take our advice and book tickets now for the May 8 performance by Geneviève RB and Alain Barbeau. The small venue and artsy surrounding make for a very exclusive atmosphere. This performance by pianist Geneviève and guitarist Alain Barbeau offers up a fusion of folk and pop music from their album On est les deux.

HOT 105.5 PEI’s New Music Showcase By Rebecca Spinner Photos Story Sheidow Hot 105.5’s listeners never waver from the station’s flawless playlist of great new music: Hedley, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, and the rest. But “hotties” (as listeners are called) also keep an ear open for the station’s irrepressible on-air hosts—Ashley Bee, Johnny Novak, Angela McNally, Matt MacLeod, and Hot Dan. The “Morning Hot Tub” with Ashley Bee and Johnny Novak provides hit music, topical conversation, and more from 6 a.m. onwards. Ashley and Johnny (both Ontarians) are relatively recent Island arrivals; Novak hails from Ottawa, Bee from New Hamburg. However, program director Matt MacLeod notes, Bee recently purchased a home locally. Matt himself is originally from Uigg, and worked in multiple Atlantic locales (“I call 88

it ‘the Maritime tour,’” he jokes) before returning home. He originally hosted Hot 105.5’s morning program; now that he’s awaiting his first child, he’s switched to helming the afternoon broadcast. Music director “Hot” Dan Gallant also hails from PEI; a Holland College alumnus, he snagged his spot at the station through an exceptionally successful internship. Hot Dan handles the station’s evening entertainment, including the Hot 6 @ 6 spotlight (“PEI’s only daily countdown of the day’s hottest songs,” Matt notes) plus the latter part of the Saturday Night Throwdown. Midday host Angela McNally takes Hot 105.5’s reins from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; she presents the throwback-focused 30 Minute Lunch Jam. Angela originally arrived here from Moncton. Now, Matt says, she’s lived

in PEI for years. “She’s really in touch with what’s happening in the community,” he notes. That’s important, since Hot 105.5’s “Hotties” are integral to the station. In fact, the station’s storefront studios, located on Great George Street, allows listeners to glimpse the hosts in action. Hosts are also happy to swing by local events in the station cruiser. Broadcasting an impeccable music selection (and handling everything from birthday requests to blizzard warnings) Hot 105.5 is PEI’s new music touchstone. While you’re enjoying music from Sia, Demi, and Ed, it’s a pleasure to catch up with Ashley, Johnny, Matt, Dan, and Angela, Hot 105.5’s motley crew.

Q

Q: How long have you been painting?

& LINDSAY WALKER

A

with

w w w. li nd sa y wa lke ra rt. com

Born in 1967 on Prince Edward Island, Lindsay Walker is self taught, and has been creating art as long as he can remember. His first sale was a drawing at the age of seven. Walker was introduced to the art of Robert Harris in the archives of The Confederation Centre of the Arts at an early age, and it left an impression on him that he would never forget. He absorbed the great care everyone was taking with the paintings, the white gloves, the awe of the work, and learned that this fellow Islander had been long gone, but his art would always remain. It turns out to be a philosophy of his to this day, to create art whose admiration can stand the test of time. His work is a reflection of his surroundings, and simpler times.

I've been painting since 1997 or so. I painted in school as well, juniour high and high school art classes. But I really caught the bug around '97, and I've been painting full time since 2003.

Q: How did you get started as an artist? Well, I had a Government job in downtown Toronto all of the 90s, which is where I met my wife Jeanette. I showed her some of my old drawings, and she asked me to draw a wolf for her, and so I did that Christmas of '96. It was shortly thereafter she bought me a brand new set of oil paints and brushes, and I've had paint on all my clothes ever since. It's all down to her encouragement and pushing me to go for it really.

Q: What inspires you? I would say, Mother Nature's endless beauty, and simple times.

Q: How long does it take to complete a painting? It depends on the size and the amount of detail. I usually stretch all my own linen as well. So I'll figure out a subject, and make a canvas size to suit it. Generally, I would say the average painting would be a few months of 10-hour days. I have had one six foot piece on my studio wall for more than ten years now. I've got to finish it. But hey, Mona Lisa's smile took ten years to perfect too right?

Q: Do you do commissions or custom work? I do. I love doing murals. I've been lucky enough to be commissioned to help paint the pediatrics ward at the QEHospital here on the Island, a Canadiana sport theme in Fort McMurray, Alberta that took six months to complete, and two great restaurant projects in Greenwich, and Manhattan NYC.

Q: Do you now or do you plan to have an exhibit of your work? If so - when and where? If not - where can the public see your work? I am going to have a show in the spring at our studio space in Charlottetown. My work can also be found at The Dunes and Ellens Creek Gallery on the Island, and my website Lindsay Walker Art.com .

Q: What goals do you have an artist for the future of your work? I'd love to travel some more and create large murals again. I always love challenging myself with something totally new. I love growing, and learning new things. But mostly, I'd love to be lucky enough to just keep painting.

Q: Do you have a favourite painting? Yes, I do, and it's always been the same. My next one.
