his year marks the show’s 35th edition, with no signs of slowing down after three and a half decades of growth. Right now, business is booming on the island according to Show Manager Denise Miller. “This is an event Islanders really trust when it comes to working on their homes,” says Miller. “Visitors continue to come out in droves year after year, which means our exhibitors don’t want to miss out either. In fact, many of them are so happy with the leads coming out of the PEI Home Show that there’s been a wait list for the past few years in a row.” As the biggest showcase of its kind on the Island, the home show brings out leaders in the home and garden industry so visitors can get a head start on projects, inside and out. The event gives thousands of people the chance to meet contractors, retailers and business owners face-to-face, and get to know the people behind the projects. One of the big advantages of the home show is getting a glimpse of everything needed to create a dream home, including a focus on outdoor living space. An impressive 1,200-square-foot area of the

show is occupied by landscaping experts from Island Grown Sod and Island Coastal, giving a look ahead to the year’s yard and garden trends. A walk through this area of the show is almost like hitting fast-forward straight to summer! Once again for the 2019 edition, PEI On The Move will return as an added-value feature. A leisure show focusing on hobbies, sports, recreation and healthy living, this section rounds out the event and gives something for everyone to enjoy. Products featured in past events have included powersports, ATVs, RVs, and other leisure activities like archery. CBC is back at the PEI Provincial Home Show as well with live broadcasts and personalities onsite. Check out page six of this guide for a schedule of who to expect in the CBC booth each day. Families will enjoy the kid-friendly presentations and activities including CBC Kids - Bookaboo or enjoy an ice cream to support Special Olympics Prince Edward Island. For complete details, please visit the show’s website at www.PEIHomeShow.ca and follow PEI Provincial Home Show on Facebook (@PEIProvincialHomeShow) and Twitter (@PEIHomeShow).

simple ways to bring more colour to your home

10

2019 PEI Provincial Home Show

When you look at your home’s interiors, do you find yourself craving a refresh? If so, there’s no better time than spring to update your home with thoughtful design touches that embrace the power of colour. Colour is a key component of interior design and a useful tool for updating any space. What’s more, colours can convey many emotions - from calm to energetic helping you create rooms that are perfectly reflective of your personal tastes. Even though the possibilities are endless, colour can be intimidating. While you may like the use of colour when you see it online, in magazines or other people’s homes, the uncertainty about how to incorporate it into your own home may hold you back. Fortunately, a few simple expert tips and tricks will have you using colour like a pro in no time. The power of colour transforms spaces from bland to beautiful. Use colour throughout your home to create rooms that are stylish and unique and transform your favourite spaces by using these top tips to bring colour into your home: Paint an accent wall: An accent wall commands attention and creates depth in the space, becoming the focal point of the room. The colour you choose can be any hue that’s different from the other walls in the room. Whether it’s slightly different or drastically different is up to you.

Add a rug: Transform a room in an instant with a vibrant rug. It will add the perfect touch of colour and can even be changed out seasonally to bring new hues into the space. A rug with a bright colour or pattern can help create the illusion of more space so don’t be afraid to use one in a smaller room to open it up and make it more inviting. Start small: Many people are timid about colour, so you can start small and incorporate a new, bold tone with items like a coffee table accessory or oversized pillows. You may find that your choice quickly becomes a favourite piece in your home, plus you’ll gain the confidence to add more colour to other rooms, too. Introduce textures: Bringing in different colours and textures, such as a plush throw blanket or a woven basket, takes your space up a notch and adds another visual layer. Since these aren’t permanent fixtures in the room, they offer an easy way to play around with colours to see what works best in the space. Embrace the unexpected: Bring in a bold pop of colour by doing something unexpected, like painting the trim instead of the wall. Whether you’re looking to do a quick update or a complete interior design overhaul, colour makes a room more dynamic and energized. From simple decor pieces to bolder accent walls, bringing colour into your home is a great way to refresh this season.

Choosing Shrubs and Perennials Words by Story Sheidow

Easy to grow, resilient, and diverse in shape and colour. There are many things to consider when planting your perennial plants, shrubs and trees.

14

2019 PEI Provincial Home Show

Height Many times the main factor in choosing a shrub or perennial is height. It is not only important to plant taller items at the back of a bed, but it’s also very important to consider height when planting alongside decks, under windows, and along fences and property lines. Some great shrubs under four feet to consider when planting in height-restricted areas include euonymous, spirea, potentilla, and some varieties of weigela or rhododendron. Low-lying varieties of evergreen shrubs like many juniper or spruces are another great option, as they maintain their foliage all year round. Root Depth Root depth is something that often gets overlooked when planning a green space. To avoid future issues and concerns, keep water-loving trees and shrubs away from building foundations, water pipes and leaching fields, as they can cause damage that is difficult to repair once the tree is established. Some examples of waterloving plants include blooming trees such as magnolia and willow trees, as well as birch, pine and maple. Take note of leaching fields and be sure to plant approved, shallow-rooted trees and shrubs only. Bloom Time The key to any great outdoor garden space is coordinating your blooms. Choosing perennials and shrubs with staggered bloom times ensures your garden beds will always have colour. Look for especially early blooming plants such as forsythia, tulips, crocuses, and irises, and ultra late bloomers like heather and hydrangea to help lengthen your ornamental garden season. Creating beds using flowers with staggered bloom times will ensure colour and impact from spring straight through to fall, and

will allow your beds to continuously reinvent themselves with everchanging colour palettes. Choosing shrubs with off-season berries such as winterberry and holly, or year-round leaves like rhododendrons, can give your outdoor space some unique variation from basic evergreens during the winter, and keep things bright and interesting. Winterberries are also native to PEI, and make a wonderful wild bird food during the winter months. Foliage Colour Another great way to add diversity to your garden space is by choosing plants with unique and varied foliage colour. Red is a popular choice, with some great examples being perennials like coral bells, or shrubs such as barberry, ninebark, or purple sand cherry. Brighter shades of green can help to brighten your space and create subtle diversity. Gold, pink, blue, black, and variegated shrubs are also beautifully bold options, and with many of these shrubs also producing flowers, they’re sure to be a showpiece in anyone’s garden. Shady Spaces Planning for a fully shaded area is always a challenge, as there are few plants for our climate that thrive with little-to-no sun. Ferns are a great natural choice, with many varieties to choose from, and larger varieties such as ostrich ferns help to add drama and create impact in a garden bed. Brunnera and hostas are wonderful, low-lying shrubs that are very hearty and easy to care for and take little time to establish, making them perfect for new garden spaces. Bleeding hearts are an excellent choice when looking to add height and colour to a shade garden. Available locally in both pink and white, they provide a great pop of colour amongst green foliage.

POOL TO YOUR

Tanning Ledge

Deck Jets

A tanning ledge is the perfect way to bask in both the sun and the water simultaneously. These shallow areas, anywhere from a six to 18 inches deep, can be added to your pool’s edge, and generally measure five feet long by ten feet wide.

Deck jets are easy to install features that create an arching stream of water between your deck and pool. These watercourses are fully adjustable, generally reaching a peak height of six feet, with an adjustable 360-degree rotation.

This relatively new design addition is almost essential when enjoying the sun on a hot day. While partially submerged, you no longer have to alternate between pool and chair, with this feature- the water is brought to you!

Deck jets are often installed in multiples, allowing for an arrangement of various heights and directions. This adaptability gives their small streams a very large impact. Water Fountain Fountains offer the largest variety of options when choosing a water feature for your pool. From smaller, inexpensive floating varieties to more extravagant, fully installed units, features such as waterfall effects, colour-changing LED lights, and angle adjustment are available, guaranteeing you’ll get exactly the look you’re going for. Grotto A grotto is typically a waterfall-type entrance to a space, be it a small cavernous area or a full-sized room. These features are generally constructed using a prefabricated artificial rock, and are integrated into the pool’s overall landscape design. While grottos are definitely on a higher-end price point, there are still many options available to those with a smaller budget. The two main aspects of a grotto are the waterfall, and the space behind it. These can vary in extravagance, depending on price point. Some grotto designs integrate additional features such as built-in staircases or waterslides. Others still can become the entranceways to full-sized rooms with swim-up bars, seating, or even a hot tub. The sky is the limit with this unique water feature.

Bathroom Projects You Can Do In A Weekend

Dreaming of a bathroom update? With some simple DIY projects, you’ll enhance your home’s value and functionality in just a weekend (or less).

20

2019 PEI Provincial Home Show

SMART TOILETS Replacing a toilet can easily be completed in a day or two, making it a DIY project worth considering. Not only will the bathroom feature an updated focal element, but the right toilet design can reduce the amount of water you use. Install a toilet that has a dual flush system to save both your wallet and the environment. STYLISH SINKS AND VANITIES A new sink and vanity is a smart way to update a bathroom in minimal time. Designs with simplified installation make it an easy DIY task. Choose the vanity that suits your needs - a refreshed modern look, extra storage, or a vintage touch. If you have limited floor space consider a pedestal sink and use wall space for added storage.

MODERN FLOORING Don’t forget to look down when considering smart bathroom updates. Replacing the floor is a simple weekend project that stands out. If you have dated vinyl flooring, consider installing modern vinyl options that are far superior to the designs of yesteryear. With planks that closely mimic wood or tile, the new look will impress. Ceramic or marble tiles are popular choices for bathroom flooring as well. For a luxury touch, consider taking a weekend to add in heated flooring elements. You can find kits at your local home improvement store that install under stone floors, so with the turn of a knob you transform chilly floors into toasty tiles. VISUAL ELEMENTS

With just one weekend you can transform a dated bathroom. These smart DIY projects increase value and enjoyment for all members of the household.

To update a bathroom, consider visual real estate and all the extras that create a cohesive aesthetic. The walls typically take up the largest space in a bathroom, which means fresh paint can be a simple weekend project with big impact. Consider choosing a semigloss mildew-resistant paint for moist bathroom spaces. Continue the refresh by painting the ceiling a crisp white, which provides a clean look that also reflects light. Finally, analyze hardware and replace dingy or outdated knobs, handles and hooks. This provides a finishing touch that ties the entire space together. LIGHTING A quick and easy way to update a bathroom is to change your lighting fixtures. Consider the types of lighting you’ll need in a functional bathroom; task, ambient and overall. Task lighting is important for above the vanity or within an enclosed shower. Ambient lighting is wonderful when relaxing in a bubble bath and your basic ceiling lighting is vital.

Seasonal Accessories As seasons come and go, our interiors should change along with them. Spring is when we like to introduce bright, fun colours. After the long winter its nice to inject colour into our spaces and cling to the spring feeling that’s in the air. Summer brings calm tones and lots of white and soft blues. Its fresh and airy and we like to keep things a little simpler because our lives usually become much busier during the summer months.

▲ Damien Morris (Photo St. Clair MacAulay) damien Morris Design 425 Brackley Point Rd, Charlottetown 902.218.0598 www.damienmorrisdesigns.ca

Fall we start bringing in warmer tones that would continue as the weather gets colder. In the winter we want to cozy up our space and bring in throw blankets, furry pillows, saturated and darker colours and create the feeling of warmth.

Area rugs are another great option to change seasonally. In winter a shag rug feels much cozier and switching it out to a sisal rug in the summer.

Toss cushion are an instant way to change up your décor without breaking the bank. Invest in good quality inserts with protectors and just purchase new pillow covers. That way it will be easier to store them on the off season.

Drapery is another way to change up for the season. Winter months we like heavier drapes to warm up those cold windows. In the summer we may not want drapes and instead cover our windows with a soft sheer. Another option to consider is moving your accessories around your home. It is an easy and cost effect way to change a room. I always am looking for great deals on accessories and moving things constantly.

Exterior Upgrades Words by Jacqui Chaisson

Thinking of adding a deck? How about replacing the tired, worn siding on your house? Now that the winter is over, it’s the perfect time to start planning your home projects so you can nail the budget and settle on the look you’re after.

28

2019 PEI Provincial Home Show

Updating your home’s exterior can make an older home look more modern, but it can also make a new build feel warmer and more established. Whether you plan to sell, or stay and enjoy your new features, anything you do to update the exterior can maximize the value of your home. Think “cool neutrals” When someone suggests a neutral tone for your exterior, do you think boring beige and tepid taupe? When it comes to vinyl siding, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover there’s a broad range of colour and style choices to meet your taste and design preferences, including soft grays, bolder mid-tone blues and warm earthtoned terra cottas.

why wellness and mindfulness have become huge influences in interior and exterior spaces. To turn your backyard into a retreat space, consider amenities like water features, zen gardens or even a shaded reading nook. Rethink your shed

The options are only limited by your imagination: backyard bar, outdoor shower, or the classic she-shed or man cave. You can even make it into a home office for those telecommuting days. To dress up a plain shed add siding with complementary trim, windows (and flower boxes), finished with a sleek glass door.

Garages and sheds can be more than a storage space for your lawnmower and tools. These four walls hold many other possibilities, and homeowners have come up with creative, free-time-oriented uses for these simple backyard structures.

Going neutral no longer means sacrificing style, or having your house look like all the others on the block. Today’s neutrals convey warmth, comfort and closeness to nature - all traits we desire in a home. Bring the inside out If you’ve decided this is the year to add a deck or a patio, don’t settle for an uninspired open-air platform. Today’s designers are remaking the deck concept altogether by bringing traditionally “indoor” amenities outside. Rugs, arbors and highdesign furniture will turn your deck into an outdoor living room. By adding a fire pit, portable furnace or heater, you and your family can spend time on the deck year-round. For a finishing touch, a floor-toceiling sliding glass door not only brings in more sunlight and natural views, it creates a seamless transition between inside and outside. But a great deck starts with high-quality materials, because the last thing you want is to spend excessive time and money on routine maintenance. Instead of using natural wood, opt for a premium composite decking that combines the natural beauty of exotic hardwood with the unsurpassed and exceptionally low-maintenance requirements of composite materials. Zen Home is where the heart is, right? So it makes perfect sense to make it into a space where self-care is a priority. That’s

Inspiring Designs

Trend Watch Photos courtesy of damien Morris Designs

Design shows feature the boldest, most cutting edge trends on the market today, constantly reinventing interior design aesthetics. These trends tend to trickle down and slowly make their way to smaller, more remote areas like here on the Island. Having the opportunity to see these shows in person helps to bridge that gap from fairytale to the every day. “To stay on top of trends I try to always attend at least one design show per year. Last year I attended IDS in Toronto and this year I decided to go bigger and checked out the Las Vegas Market; it did not disappoin! Three 16-floor buildings with 10-15 show rooms per floor, says Damien Morris, of damien Morris Designs.

“Here are four trends to follow for 2019.”

Colour was huge at the market this year. From turquoise to orange to navy, colour was popping up in sofas, headboards and in lots of wallpaper. It’s nice to see so much colour being injected into everyday items, rather than saving colour for just accessories or artwork. Using a turquoise sofa does take some guts, but it sure looks good when it’s done right.

Move over white bedding. I am a huge fan of all white bedding and I think it’s the perfect way to end the day; crawling into crisp white sheets and a beautiful white duvet. But lets step outside the box for a minute and inject a little colour into the bedroom. Navy and orange was hot-hot-hot at the show and I fell in love with this bedroom set. Maybe it’s time to add some personality back into bedroom finishes. 32

Gold was still very strong. From furniture, lighting, mirrors and artwork, every showroom embraced gold in their own way. Don’t shy away from gold, adding in little bits of it here and there and mixing it with other metals helps warm your space and creates a beautiful layered look. Start small and slowly build your gold collection.

Lighting artwork. There were so many beautiful lighting fixtures at the show, and it was so hard to choose which I loved more. From deconstructed to over-the-top to simple Edison bulbs: There was a wide range to choose from. One thing is for sure, statement lighting is here is stay, and investing in beautiful lights for your home can set you apart from everyone else.

So, what’s the scoop on investing in real estate on the Island? We’ll break down the options, the risks and the benefits so you can be assured you’ll “invest best”.

I

nvesting in a rental property can be profitable, but it’s not without risks

Have you ever dreamed of investing in real estate? A rental property, maybe several? Investing in property is a smart move that pays off every month, creating a steady income - but, there are things to consider and it can be risky. Property on PEI is a hot commodity and investment property gets snatched up pretty quickly, resulting in impulsive decisions. “PEI is one of the Canada’s smallest provinces with an incredible amount of growth and innovation happening now, and for many years to come,” says Nick Tweel of Coldwell Banker, Nick Tweel Real Estate. “We have less people leaving our province and more and more establishing roots - building businesses.” Multi-unit vs Single Investing in a multi-unit rental vs a single unit apartment or condo depends on a few important factors. Investors just entering the market may find the multi-unit option a bit overwhelming as first-time landlords. Vetting new tenants, building maintenance and upkeep - including snow removal in the winter and yard-work in the summer - without hiring a property manager you may find being a landlord a full-time job. A great alternative is a purchasing duplex, where you can live in one side and rent out the other. Inthese cases often the rental unit will cover a majority of your expenses. In-law/Rental Suite Adding an in-law or rental suite to your existing property is a great way to produce extra income with reduced risk. With both UPEI and Holland College attracting students each year, rentals are in great demand, and an added advantage to creating a student rental is the ability to convert to a shortterm rental during the tourist season. “Having an additional income to offset the costs of owning a house can be a incredible way to help you grow your investment and enjoy life a little more”, says Tweel, “But remember, there can be some downsides to this, so careful planning, proper paperwork and good advice from someone like myself will help make this a more positive experience. And always insure your tenants have apartment insurance, this is often overlooked and is very important.”

Condominiums Purchasing a condominium as an income property is one of the easiest ways to enter the investment market. With property maintenance paid through condo fees, as a landlord you would only be responsible for your unit’s upkeep. Condos are also a great setup for an AirBnB or short-term rental - but be aware, as the property owner you will be responsible for damages and disturbances caused by your guests. There may also be restrictions regarding short-term or AirBnBs in the building. AirBnB & Executive Rentals Offering fully-furnished rental properties complete with coffee machine, appliances and sumptuous bedding as an alternative option for business travelers is a niche market that can be a great investment. The property can be a condominium in a high-end building or a single-family home, the most important consideration is offering convenience and luxury. “The AirBnb area of rentals in very strong and going to get stronger,” says Tweel, “People love having the benefits of a fully furnished house with kitchen, and most of them are in prime locations for the same price as a regular hotel room.” says Tweel. Vacation Rentals It is PEI after all, and vacation rentals are always in demand during the season. Purchase a property closer to one of the many incredible beaches, have it available during the tourist season as a weekly rental, and close it up for the winter each year. Or rent it short-term for the season and reduce the rate for an off-season rental - of course it will need to be well prepared for the colder months, and location will be an important factor. The benefit of a seaside cottage is having access to the property for your family during the summer.

What are the best areas to buy investment (rental) properties? “If its your first time, or you want to reduce the risks, choose a property close to downtown or the city centre” says Tweel, “If the market slows down you can be assured that these units will always rent first before any of the units on the outskirts.” In conclusion, always seek the advice of a real estate professional when you decide the time is right for investing in property. “Being a landlord can be a very rewarding experience.” says Tweel, “You’re building an incredible future and retirement. You meet people from all walks of life, and it makes you feel proud to be a property owner.” 2019 PEI Provincial Home Show

Solar Energy - The future is bright Words and photos by Story Sheidow

“The average home consumes 25 to 30 KWHs per day, or about 11000 KWHs per year. Based on those estimates, homeowners can ideally expect to require an approximately 30-panel system to balance production and consumption.” ▲ Matt Eye, M.B. Eye Electrical

Solar energy is steadily gaining popularity, and its use has nearly doubled annually in recent years as power rates have increased. Homeowners are searching for innovative new ways to increase energy efficiency and save money long-term. Installing a solar array is a great way to do just that, and solar itself is now more accessible than ever. Technological advances have created smaller, less expensive, and more powerful panels. Now, it’s possible for nearly everyone to acquire a solar energy system array.

R

enewable energy sources such as solar are great options for homeowners, and are suitable for both new builds and existing homes. One key advantage of solar power is its minimal environmental impact. Since solar energy is a renewable resource, it produces zero emissions, so its carbon footprint is minuscule compared to finite resources like coal and gas. That in itself is an undeniable reason to consider solar energy.

not to produce more solar energy then they consume,” Eye advises. Since HST is charged when you utilize stored energy credits, and any unused credits with the electric company are only held over for one year, aiming to produce slightly less than your needs can lower your installation, operation, and maintenance costs. That maximizes solar power’s value for owners, and simplifies metering practices.

But How Does It All Work? Net Metering Will Save You Money Through the local electric company, an energy budgeting program called “net metering” is available. This program stabilizes homeowners’ energy needs and maximizes the advantages of shifting to solar power. Because solar energy relies entirely on available sunlight, energy intake can vary widely from day to day. Net metering enables excess energy created on sunny days to be banked and carried over throughout the year, allowing customers to use stored energy credits on days when their production is low.

Solar panels can be installed either on your home’s roof, or on specially designed ground level racks. Which style you choose is contingent on the size of your required solar array, how many panels your roof can accommodate, and how much direct sunlight your home receives. You can determine your solar needs based on your average daily energy consumption, which can easily be calculated using your past year’s electric bills. In Eye’s experience, “The average home consumes 25 to 30 KWHs per day, or about 11000 KWHs per year.” Based on those estimates, homeowners can ideally expect to require an approximately 30-panel system to balance production and consumption.

Net metering can make solar power more reliable for Islanders, often evening out their yearly production/consumption ratio. Matt Eye, of M.B. Eye Electrical, is a certified solar installer specializing in energy-efficient electrical options. He offers some of the most innovative site-specific solar energy solutions available today. “Homeowners should strive

With all this in mind, there are many reasons to choose solar energy. As finite resources rise in price and solar costs decrease, many people are now making the shift to this renewable resource. On-site solar consults are generally free, so consider reaching out to explore your options, and taking part in the clean energy movement.

BUILT IN small space storage solutions Making the most of living in a small space means finding storage solutions that are both functional and stylish. Built in storage is the perfect answer to finding a place for everything without everything taking over our space.

uilt-ins add storage and organization to any room and can replace bulky furniture. There are lots of new innovative ways to design and use built-ins in your space; here are just a few ideas. That's entertaining Opt for a built-in entertainment centre as opposed to a large piece of furniture as a focal point. Combine open shelving, glass front cabinets and cupboards to house and hide cords, electronic equipment, game consoles and games. Have electric outlets, Internet equipment and cable outlets built in to avoid the need for messy cords. You're surrounded Plan a built-in around a fireplace or window to add style and architectural detail to an otherwise plain space. Add a window seat with extra storage as a bonus. Murphy's Law The ultimate built-in? A Murphy bed allows you to double the function of a guest room and they take up less space than a pull-out sofa. Home office A home office never seems to have enough storage. Build in everything from storage to the desk along the walls, and leave the centre of the room empty, especially for small offices. Mud Room Use the built-in to function as mudroom storage. Keep the clutter in its place! Muddy boots, shoes, backpacks and all the paraphernalia that comes with a busy family can easily be tucked away. Laundry room blues Specialized storage is available for laundry rooms such as built-in ironing boards, sorting stations, and drying racks. Even the appliances themselves can be hidden behind built-ins.

Play space Kids' rooms and playrooms are always suffering from clutter overload. What mother hasn't stepped on Lego or tripped over misplaced toys? Try to include adjustable shelves that allow the built-in to grow with your kids. Portable Don't despair if you're a renter. Have your built-in designed to be removable when you move on to new digs. Just be sure that it is secured properly and safely while it enhances your current space.

Whether it is a tiny condo, a colonial house in a subdivision or a unique energy efficient build, Damien Packwood of Charlottetown-based design business, damien Morris Designs, creates dazzling designs that are both inspirational and enticing. Celebrating just over a year and a half of being in business on his own, Packwood is working on new designs, refreshing homes, and connecting with local partners. The now 33 year old originally from Newfoundland relocated to Prince

Edward Island to attend Holland College. He worked in a couple of different industries over the years, but he was never fully satisfied with his choice. He knew he wanted to work in interior design. “I knew I wanted to be in this industry even when I was kid. I would always be constantly changing around my room or picking out different colours. I watched City Line like all my life,” he recalls. Packwood first took an interior decorating course online at the age of 19, and an online interior design course last year. He has now been in the industry for over seven years, with experience working with local design companies and a custom kitchen cabinet business. “I gained experience. I gained skills and education and just kept building because I knew in the end I was going to have my own place,” says Packwood. damien Morris Designs opened in June

2017. His office is located in Charlottetown where he is currently working from a comprehensive showroom, which consists of different furnishings, as well as arrangements of various rooms in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. “I think it’s important, especially when I’m selling kitchens. I want to take them to the kitchen and show them ‘this is your light valance, this is your crown, this is the door style we can do.’ There’s a bunch of organizing and drawers; a lot of moving components to a kitchen that if you just talk about them, they don’t really get it,” he explains. Since venturing off on his own, Packwood has partnered with local companies including Greenleaf Construction. He designs the majority of the home interiors for Greenleaf, and also works with Kitchen Concepts designing all of their kitchens.

“We’re kind of a little trio package,” he explains. He says his style, right now, is all white everything with minimal detail, raw natural wood accents and matte finishes rather than high gloss. “Kitchens I am more Scandinavian,” he says. For living rooms, he tends to be more contemporary with varying shades of grey, clean lines and chrome finishes. “I also love traditional spaces because they are classic design and are timeless and not trendy,” Packwood says. Another local company dMD is working with is Atlantic Green Contractors. This design feature is trending everywhere right now and adds some life, literally, to otherwise flat, blank spaces. “It’s really cool. You can do these living walls in your house or these moss art walls,” he says. “I’m trying to get some movement with it because nobody else is doing it.”

In the future, Packwood plans to own a design a décor store. He also hopes to someday start a company where more than one designer can be based. “I would be fine collaborating with two or three other people and sharing an office space,” he says. “I would rather work together. We’re all going to have our own projects and compete on some projects, but I think there is enough to go around that I think it would be a cool concept.”

Herbs to Add to Your Flower Bed Words by Story Sheidow

With spring just around the corner, the time has come for garden planning; and with all that in mind, I’d like to “plant a seed” about some beautiful, fragrant, and hearty perennial herbs that are sure to not only give your flower beds a wow-factor, but also come in handy in your home!

42

2019 PEI Provincial Home Show

Lavender Though many associate this plant with its relaxing aroma, lavender offers so much more. In our gardening zone (Zone 5 here on PEI), lavender is a perennial - technically a small shrub - measuring 20 to 24 inches tall at maturity. With impactful light gray foliage and vibrant dark purple flowers, it can add depth and create contrast to your landscape – and a delightful fragrance too! Lavender is best bought as a two to three year old plant to increase its chances of survival in the first year, where establishing its root system is essential. Bonus: Use this herb to promote relaxation and sleep.

Sage

Yarrow

Echinacea

Sage is a visual stunner in any garden. The contrasting white foliage adds drama to a common green backdrop, and with its height of one to two feet, it can be utilized to create variation and support around taller, sparse perennial flowers such as daisies, coreopsis, and false sunflower.

While yarrow is common on the Island, often found in fields and disturbed areas, it remains highly underutilized. While most often seen in its white variation, yarrow is now available in an large array of colours, from orange to red to yellow.

Echinacea, also knows as coneflower, is a hardy perennial similar in appearance to black eyed susan - but with light purple or pink petals. Once established, echinacea is an easy to grow herb that blooms reliably each year from July to September, regardless of soil quality.

Sage prefers to grow in sandy conditions and dislikes fertilization; so resist the urge to amend its soil with anything rich in nutrients. Sage prefers to be planted in full sun, protected from the elements, if possible. Bonus: Sage is great as a tea or gargle for coughs and colds, can aid in night sweats and hot flashes, and is delicious with fish and other protein-rich culinary delicacies.

What makes yarrow so essential to any gardener is its ability to accumulate nutrients from far below the surface. The deep root system of this plant will actually mine the subsoil for potassium, phosphorus, and copper, and bring it up to the surface, creating nutrient-dense mulch. Due to this unique trait, yarrow is especially useful to plant around fruit trees and berry bushes. An added bonus to this lovely flower is its ability to attract pollinators. Butterflies and bees will appreciate its nectar-rich flowers, which also make a beautiful addition to cut flower arrangements.

These flowers look best when planted in clumps for a more dramatic impact, and can be used as cut flowers once blooms have opened fully. Echinacea not only attracts butterflies and bees, but also provides birds with a protein-rich seed source in the fall, making it a must-have for any bird and wildlife enthusiast. Bonus: All parts of this plant are medicinal. Use leaves, flowers, and even roots for tea to boost your immune system and fight off colds and flus.

Bonus: Use yarrow to slow the bleeding in wounds. Simply mash the plant into a paste with a small amount of water, and apply topically.
