“Maybe, it will stop if I stay very still,” Carrot thinks. So, Carrot lies on her stomach. ‘Hicks!’ Oh, no! It doesn’t stop.

“Maybe, it will stop if I go outside,” she thinks. So, Carrot runs out into the garden. ‘Hicks!’ That doesn’t stop the sound, either.

“What if I stand on my front legs?” she wonders. So, Carrot slowly lifts her hind legs up... ‘Hicks!’ Oh, no! She is still making the strange sound!

Nothing Carrot does seems to work. She is out of breath...and ideas.

“What a clever puppy!” someone remarks. Carrot looks up and sees some people standing outside the gate. They have been watching her do different tricks. ‘Clap! Clap! Clap!’ they cheer.

Carrot is happy to see people smiling at her. She wants to bark to say hello. Instead, the only sound that comes out is, ‘Hicks!’

Carrot runs inside to find Carrie’s mum. “Perhaps she can help me!” Carrot thinks.

‘Hicks!’ “Oh! You have a hiccup, Carrot!” Carrie’s mum says. “Here, drink some carrot juice,” she tells Carrot.

Carrot hesitates. She thinks, “How can I drink while I’m making this strange sound called a ‘hiccup’?”

Carrie’s mum sees that Carrot doesn’t want to drink the juice. “Come on, Carrot,” she coaxes. “Drink up, and your hiccup will stop.”

So, Carrot drinks the carrot juice. ‘Gulp! Gulp!’ Then, she waits to see what will happen...

At that moment, Carrie rushes into the kitchen. She has just come back from school. “Mum, I have a hiccup!” she declares. ‘Hicks!’

Carrot knows just what Carrie should do! She pushes her bowl in front of Carrie. There is some carrot juice left.
