alphabet. The children learn to recognise and pronounce the 26 letters. They also learn to associate the letters with objects and animals which are common to them in their environment so that the meanings of the words can be easily understood. The use of attractive stickers stimulates the children’s interest to learn. What’s more, they learn to pronounce the words properly in the process. Equally important, number recognition to ten is taught as a key to their early maths. Colours and shapes are introduced to them as the recognisable characteristics to observe and categorise what they see.

Did you ever wonder why alphabet recognition is such a critical skill that children need to learn? The alphabet is a collection of letters and sounds which forms the foundation of a language. Learning the names and shapes of the letters of the alphabet is the first step towards reading.

The alphabet can be taught at an early age, even before primary school. It is recommended that this learning takes place before preschool age because this is such a critical part of the learning process. Learning to read is very different from learning to speak, and it does not happen all at once. There is a steady progression in the development of reading ability over time. Once the children are able to speak, they can begin developing basic reading skills. With reading comes more vocabulary and curiosity, so it helps them express themselves better about their environment and gain more knowledge about everything.

“Learn to Read” is written with the understanding that each letter of the alphabet has limited value, but combinations of letters create words, the essence of written communication. In order to read an alphabetic language like English, the children must learn the alphabetic principle that letter symbols represent sounds. The workbook introduces them to concepts of print using the correct sequence of strokes, familiarises them with the upper case and lower case versions of each letter, acquaints them with the names of objects that start with the target letters and sounds, and helps them practise pronouncing words.

“Learn to Read” – a stepping stone towards the wonderful world of reading.
