Model Compositions for Primary 2 is written with young learners in mind and to expose them to writing in a very friendly and enjoyable manner by sharing with them what is close to their hearts. As such, the composition examples in the book are carefully planned and thought out based on understanding how a young mind learns, thinks and feels. The theme for each writing piece is drawn from the experiences, thoughts, ideas and feelings of young learners, and the themes presented in different writing styles are very relevant to school tests or exams.

My name is Sam. I am eight years old. My father’s name is John. He is forty-five years old. My father and I often do things together. On one occasion, we went to the pet shop together to buy fish for our aquarium at home. We filled the aquarium with goldfish, angelfish, tetras and danios. Once a week, my dad and I clean the aquarium together. My dad gives me a net. I scoop the fish out carefully with the net and put them in a pail of water. The fish are very active. They do not like to be caught in the net, so they dive under. I am patient. I coax the fish. I tell them, “It’s alright, guys. I just want to clean your home.” When I get them in the net, I see them jumping and wriggling. I quickly put them into the pail of water. I want them to be comfortable. My dad and I spend some time looking at the fish in the aquarium every day. My father and I are very happy to do things together.

My father is a patient man. He seldom scolds me . That does not mean that my dad never gets angry with me. There are times when I make my dad angry. My dad gets angry when I do not listen to him. Once he told me not to spend too much of my time chatting with my friends on the Internet. I got carried away and I ended up not doing my homework and sleeping late. My dad was angry. He gave me a good scolding. He banned me from using the computer for two weeks. When my father is angry, he will scold me very loudly. Sometimes he will use the cane to beat my hand. I am very afraid when I know that I am in the wrong. When my father is angry, he will not speak to me. He will speak only if I show him that I have changed and have done what he has advised. I do not want to make my father angry. I must obey him. It is for my own good.

My mother and I are like best friends. When my mum goes shopping, I am her companion. When she buys clothes or shoes, she will ask me whether the items look good on her. My mum asks for my opinion. She does listen to what I say. I read the fashion magazines that my mum buys, so I think my ideas come from what I have read or seen in the magazines. My mother and I like the same food. When we are out, we enjoy eating “sushi together. My mum says that it is a joy to cook for me because I like the food she cooks so much that I always have a second helping. My mother and I are very close. I can tell her all my secrets. Once my classmate was angry with me because I refused to let her copy my homework. She did not talk to me for the whole day. I felt sad. I told my mum about it. She comforted me. Indeed my mother and I have such a good relationship.

My mother has a talent for sewing clothes. My mum told me that she had never gone for any lessons on tailoring. She said that one day it dawned upon her that she could sew her own clothes and save money. So she removed all the seams of a dress that she had bought. She looked at all the parts of the dress. She measured each part and took notice of the shapes in which they were cut out. Later, my mum bought some cloth. She cut the cloth to sew it into a dress. When she had finished sewing, the dress fitted her so well. I praised my mum. Since then, my mum has been buying cloth and sewing dresses for me too. She would look at beautiful dresses at boutiques, copy their designs and sew. I look pretty in all the dresses she has sewn for me. My mother can sew dresses, blouses, skirts and pants. She is so talented. She seems to have the knack for sewing. She finds great joy in sewing too. I am very proud of my mum. 4

I have a younger brother. His name is Henry. He is six years old, just two years younger than I am. I think we have different personalities. Henry is very talkative and I am rather quiet. However, we get along very well. I like to hear my brother tell me about what he has read. My brother reads a lot of books about dinosaurs. I knew very little about dinosaurs in the past but now I have some knowledge about these magnificent creatures. Henry likes being outdoors. I used to stay home a lot. Now I enjoy taking my brother to the playground in the evening. We play on the slides. He pushes me on the swing and I laugh. We have fun playing together. My brother and I share the same bedroom. He always asks me to read him a story at bedtime. When I see him listening to my story so intently, I am touched. It makes me feel that I have done something nice for my dear brother. My brother and I are good company for each other. 5

My brother loves food. When he is at home, he is always asking my mother for something to eat. Then, when we go out, he is always asking my dad what we are going to eat. When I see my brother eat, I know that he enjoys his food. He does not throw any food away. He always finishes what is on his plate. I think my brother’s favourite food is instant noodles. He knows how to cook the noodles by himself. He has them for supper very often. I have never heard him say that he is bored of eating instant noodles. As for other types of food, I do not see my brother eat them all the time. My brother tells me that the noodles are very tasty. He says that when he adds in an egg and some prawns, they taste even better than the noodles sold outside. I agree with my brother. I have tasted the instant noodles. They are delicious. My brother’s favourite food is something so common. It is just instant noodles! 6

My brother thought of playing a joke on his classmate on April Fools’ Day. He decided to put a toad inside his friend’s school bag. The night before April Fools’ Day, he went on a toadcatching adventure. I went along. My brother took with him a net and a torch. We walked to the park near our house. The rain had stopped. I could hear the toads croaking. It was quite dark. Without the torch, it was impossible to see anything on the ground My brother shone his torch around. After some time, he saw a toad. He put his net over the toad. When he flipped the net over, the toad jumped on to his face. He screamed and I laughed. My brother tried to catch the toad but he fell into a puddle. My brother searched again. This time he had a small toad in his net. He put the toad in a box. We trudged home. The next morning, my brother opened the box. The toad was not there. It just went missing!

My younger brother had a bad habit of biting his thumbnail. My parents told him not to do so, but when they were out of sight, he did it again. I also advised him but he did not listen to me. He only bit his right thumbnail, not the left thumbnail. I remember it all started when he was watching a horror movie. He was so scared that he put his right thumb inside his mouth. Ever since that time, the habit had stuck with him. One day, I did not see my brother bite his thumbnail. I was surprised. I praised him but he cried. I took a look at his right thumb. It was red and swollen. My brother said that it hurt badly. My parents took him to the clinic. The doctor did a small operation. They made a small cut on his thumb and took out all the pus. It was painful. He looked at his bandaged thumb and sobbed. Since then, my brother has stopped his bad habit.

She allows us to do so. We pretend that we are models walking down the catwalk. My sister and I study and do our homework together. When I see her study hard, I do the same. We always pass our tests. When it is my birthday, my sister gives me a present. For her birthday, I make a special card for her. My sister and I love each other very much.

We have a pet cat at home. My sister likes to play with the cat. Sometimes my sister is mischievous. She ties a ribbon to the cat’s tail. This makes the cat go round and round trying to get the ribbon on its tail. My sister will then laugh. I pity our cat. I think it does not like to have something on its tail. Once my mischievous sister covered the cat’s food with a bowl. The cat could not eat its food. It used its paw to try to push the bowl away, but it was difficult. It kept meowing. After some time, my sister took away the bowl. I saw the cat eat its food. It seemed very hungry. On another occasion, the cat wanted to go out to the garden. My sister stood at the doorway. When it moved to the left, my sister moved in the same direction. The cat could not get past my sister. I heard my sister laughing. My sister is always up to mischief. If I were the cat, I would be very annoyed.

My sister has many dresses but there is one which is her favourite. Her favourite dress is pink in colour. It is sleeveless. The fabric is cotton. On the front there are two big pockets. My sister says that she likes this dress because of the pockets. She likes to put her candies there. My mum bought the dress for her from the mall last year. The dress is knee-length. My sister does not like to wear dresses that are too short or too long. So this length suits her. There is a small embroidered picture of a puppy on the right side of the dress. I think the puppy embroidery design is very cute and nice. My sister wears this dress very often. She wears it at home and when she is going out. She says she likes the feel of the cloth. It is not warm and prickly. The cloth is light and she feels very comfortable. I think my sister looks very pretty in her favourite dress. My mum is happy that my sister likes the dress. 11

When my mother gave birth to my baby sister, my grandma came to stay with us. I was so happy to see her. I was even happier when she told me that she would be staying for a long time. Every time she bathed the baby, I was there beside her. I watched her. She was so tender and loving towards my baby sister. My grandma also took good care of me. She made sure my clothes were washed and ironed. She reminded me to study hard and do my homework. She went to the market and came back with a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. She cooked delicious meals for us. When my grandma came to stay, we were all very happy. We were so well taken care of. She made our home so warm with her love and care.
