Model Compositions for Primary 3 is written with young learners in mind and to expose them to writing in a very friendly and enjoyable manner by sharing with them what is close to their hearts. As such, the composition examples in the book are carefully planned and thought out based on understanding how a young mind learns, thinks and feels. The theme for each writing piece is drawn from the experiences, thoughts, ideas and feelings of young learners, and the themes presented in different writing styles are very relevant to school tests or exams.

Last Friday, our teachers gave us loads of homework. When I came home from school, I heaved a big sigh before I greeted my mother. She asked me what the matter was. I told her and she promised to help me. This cheered me up immediately because I knew I could count on my mother’s help. Actually my parents had planned to take my brother and me to Universal Studios on Sentosa Island. We were to go on Saturday. So, I had to make sure I finished part of my homework on Friday. Only then could I enjoy myself on Saturday. I could finish the rest of my homework on Sunday. After lunch, I started on my Maths homework. My mother helped me out when I was stuck. Then, I read a passage from the English textbook. I turned to my mother when I could not understand certain parts of the passage. I was able to answer all the questions that followed. It was almost six when I finished. I was satisfied with the work I had done. I went to help my mother prepare dinner. I was grateful for her help and thankful to have a mother who loves me. I learnt a valuable lesson today. We should never put off what we can do today. 1

Ronny was never serious about his schoolwork. He never revised his lessons. When his friends reminded him about the term exams, he replied, “Don’t worry. There’s plenty of time to study for it.” He spent most of his free time cycling around the neighbourhood or watching television. The Friday before the exams, Ronny noticed the exam timetable on the class noticeboard. “Oh no!” he exclaimed. “It can’t be next Monday. I haven’t even started revising,” he said. After lunch that day, Ronny locked himself in his room and started to go through his textbooks. At dinner time, his father knocked on the door, “Ronny, don’t you want dinner?” he asked. “No. I’m not hungry,” Ronny replied. He studied until he fell asleep at his desk. The next morning, he started studying again after breakfast. He skipped lunch and grabbed a quick bite during dinner. He repeated this on Sunday. On Monday morning, Ronny fainted as he was going out. Ronny’s father took him to the nearest clinic. The doctor gave him sick leave. When his classmates heard what had happened, they said, “Ronny has exam fever.”

Kavita was an only child. She loved to help her mother with the household chores. She folded clothes and put them neatly away. She always picked up her toys. She made her own bed and her bedroom was always clean and tidy. Kavita was such a responsible girl that her class chose her to be the class monitor. Since she lived near the school, she made sure she was the first to be in class every day. She supervised her classmates who were cleaning the classroom each day. She always checked that all the lights and fans were switched off before the pupils left the class. Being the class monitor, Kavita knew she had to set a good example. She was always polite and helpful. She always greeted the teachers and the other pupils with a smile. She spoke softly and never raised her voice even though she was angry. Although Kavita had other responsibilities, she never shirked her studies. She did well in the monthly tests and term exams. She took an active part in cocurricular activities. She was a model pupil. At the Speech Day that year, Kavita received the Model Pupil award. She was proud of herself.

I always look forward to Wednesday. On Wednesday, we have music lessons. We learn to sing or play a musical instrument. I can play the tambourine quite well. I love to sing too. I can sing all the high notes. My Music teacher is forming a school choir and I am proud to be part of it. We will perform at the school concert at the end of the year. I have to stay back after school on Wednesdays to practice with the school choir. We have to learn songs and sing them over and over again until the teacher is satisfied. Sometimes we are asked to sing solo. I am not good at that. My voice is not powerful enough. I am one of the backup singers. Whenever we learn a new song, we will first go through the lyrics with the teacher. Then we will listen to a recording of the song. After that we will sing each line. This can take some time if the song is difficult but we are lucky to have a very patient teacher. There are some lyrics that can be quite difficult to remember. I always practise at home. My mother helps me out by playing the tune on the piano. She sings along with me too. She is happy that I have been chosen to be in the school choir.

Hi! I am Andrew and this is my blog about my school canteen food. Let me start by saying that I do not go to the canteen at recess because my mother always packs some food for me. They are usually sandwiches or homemade sausage buns. I also bring a bottle of plain water to school so that I do not have to buy a drink. I also have more time to eat since I do not have to queue up. However, sometimes I have to stay back after school for co-curricular activities. Then, I have lunch at the canteen. This is what I have to say about the food sold in my school canteen. It is not tasty at all. There are many different types of food such as, fried noodles, fried rice, noodle soup, chicken rice and burgers. They cost one dollar each. A plate of fried noodles consists of noodles fried in dark sauce with bean sprouts and eggs. The fried rice consists of rice, mixed vegetables and small bits of sausages. The noodle soup and chicken rice are no better. The burger is too oily and soggy. The meat patty does not taste like meat at all. So do you wonder why I prefer not to eat canteen food? Next time, I am going to ask my mum to pack lunch for me too. 5

Why should we have a clean school? 1 Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. They cause dengue and malaria. Therefore, the ditches around the school should be kept clean. 2 Dustbins that are overflowing with rubbish smell bad. If the smell is too strong, we cannot focus on our lessons. 3 Rubbish also attracts pests such as cockroaches and rats. We do not want these creatures in our schools! 4 Litter is also an eyesore. The school may have a new and beautiful building but if there is litter everywhere, the school is ugly.
Pe
la n

What can we do? Throw litter into the dustbins. Keep the school toilets clean. Pick up litter when you come across it in the school compound.
Let’s work together to get faster results. 6

I seldom use the school toilet unless I cannot help it. Do you know why? Let me list the reasons. 1. There is a stench as I approach the toilet. This makes me want to gag. 2. The floor of the toilet is wet and slippery. If I am not careful, I may slip and fall. 3. There is tissue paper all over the floor. 4. The sinks are sometimes clogged with leftover food. Some pupils wash their food containers in the sinks. 5. The faucets at the sinks are slippery with soap suds. 6. Some pupils do not flush the toilet after use. 7. Some pupils squat on the toilet seats. They leave their dirty shoe prints on the seats. Follow some simple rules while using the toilet. Drop litter into the dustbins. Flush the toilet after use. Do not squat on the toilet seats. Wash away any soap suds from the faucets after use. Do not throw water on the floor of the toilet. Every pupil should keep the school toilets clean. 7

On Friday, my classmates and I worked in the school science garden. We brought along plastic pails, watering cans, trowels and gardening forks. We put on gardening gloves to protect our hands. We worked in groups of fours. First, we pulled out the weeds from the vegetable and flower beds. There were some weeds with very long roots so we used the trowels to loosen the soil around them. Then we pulled them out. We put the weeds in the plastic pails. After that, we loosened the soil in the beds. We used the gardening forks to do this. We worked quietly and quickly along the beds. We finished our task in half an hour. Next, we filled the watering cans and watered the plants and flowers. Then, we brought the pails of weeds to the compost heap. We left the weeds there for the school gardener to turn them into compost. He uses the compost to fertilise the plants. I like working in the science garden. I enjoy looking at the colourful flowers and green leaves. I feel happy to see the plants growing well. If we look after them well, they will reward us with beautiful flowers and juicy fruits.

Dear Joe, I received your letter a week ago. I am sorry to hear that you have not been able to find time to carry out your favourite pastime. Let me tell you how I manage to complete my school work and have time for my favourite activities. The secret is time management. You need to plan your work. I have a schedule which I follow strictly every day. I pin it up on the noticeboard in my room. After school, I have lunch and give myself half an hour of television time. Then I start on my homework and revise my school lessons. I am usually done by 5 p.m. I relax and read a story book for half an hour. If I am tired, I take a nap. By 6 p.m., I’m free to go cycling if the weather is fine. If it is raining, I play a computer game. I hope that I have been of some help to you. Please write to me about it soon.
Yours sincerely, Kartik 9

What do you do with your pocket money? How can you earn more pocket money? These are the two things I would like to discuss. First, what should you use your pocket money for? I get a weekly allowance from my parents. I use it wisely and sometimes I have extra money. I save this in my money box because my parents always encourage me to do so. When I have saved enough, I am allowed to buy extra gadgets for my bicycle. Second, how do you earn extra pocket money? Let me list the ways. 1. Wash your father’s car for a sum of money. 2. Talk to your mother and see how you can get paid to do some household chores. 3. Collect old newspapers and sell them at the recycling centre. 4. Run simple errands for neighbours and relatives and get paid. 5. Help your neighbours to walk their pet dogs.
Whatever you do, always get your parents’ permission first. Remember to spend your money wisely. A fool and his money are soon parted.

Tuesday, 26 November I am very proud of myself today. I helped someone and felt blessed to be able to do so. The lift was under repair this afternoon so I had to walk up the stairs after school. When I reached the landing on the third floor, I met old Aunty Jane who lives on the fifth floor. She had two heavy shopping bags and was taking a rest to catch her breath. I greeted her and offered to help her with her bags. At first she refused because she did not want me to go out of my way. I told her to wait for me while I left my school bag at home and also let my mother know what I was doing. I carried the heavy bags up two flights of stairs. I waited for Aunty Jane to open her door. Then I carried the bags into her house. She was grateful and wanted to pay me for helping her. Of course I did not accept her money. What are neighbours for? When I got home, mum said she was proud of me. She gave me a big hug and that was reward enough for me. I feel blessed that I am young and strong enough to help an older person.

My family lives in a large residential area. There are many rows of terraced houses and bungalows. Some of the houses have well-kept front lawns while there are others which have overgrown weeds. I think each household should be responsible for its compound. It should be kept clean and tidy. There are a few simple ways to do so. First, those who have pets such as dogs and cats should remember to pick up their dog poop when they walk their dogs. Make sure that their dogs do not urinate into the neighbour’s hedges or on the car wheels. Second, do not throw litter into the common drain in front of the house. Make sure the drain is not blocked by debris such as dried leaves and litter. Third, throw household refuse in plastic bags which are tied up to avoid attracting flies and other pests. Do not leave them by the road. Instead, drop them into the rubbish bins outside the house and make sure the bins are covered. Stray dogs and cats will tear open trash bags and scatter the trash all over the road. Make cleanliness and tidiness a habit and the neighbourhood will be a lovely place to live in.

My friend Wei Mun lives next to Mr and Mrs Wong, their three young sons and Grandmother Wong. Mr and Mrs Wong run a noodle stall at a nearby hawker centre. They leave home at 7 a.m. and usually come home after 3 p.m. Grandmother Wong looks after the three boys. The three boys are very unruly. They do not pay any attention to their grandmother. She would shout loudly at them when they are naughty. Sometimes she would chase after them with a cane. The boys run from room to room, screaming and banging the doors shut. They are very noisy indeed. One day, while this was going on, the grandmother stepped on a toy car. She slipped and fell. She hit her head on the floor and fainted. The boys had locked themselves in their bedroom. They did not know that their grandmother was hurt. They played noisily in their bedroom until their parents came home. Mr and Mrs Wong were shocked to find the old lady unconscious. They sent her to the hospital. They realised the boys needed to be disciplined. They enrolled them in a nearby kindergarten. Nowadays, the three boys are better behaved. 13

Yesterday I went to the neighbourhood playground with my younger sister. I wanted to let her sit on the swing and play on the slide. When we got there, the playground was crowded. There were children playing on the slides, swings and monkey bars. Unfortunately, the younger children were not supervised. I saw some older children pushing the younger ones out of their way as they rushed to climb up the slides. One small girl dropped to her knees and cried but no one paid any attention to her. There were some children who were standing on the swings as they swung to and fro. I thought this was dangerous. I think parents should not allow their little children to go to the playground unless they are accompanied by an older child. Parents should also talk to their children about safety in the playground. Older children should understand that they should not hog the equipment in the playground. The younger children should be allowed to play on the slides, swings and see-saws without being pushed around. The playground belongs to the community. Everyone has a share in it. If everyone is responsible, it will be fun to go and spend some time there.
