Alphabet recognition is a critical skill that children need to learn before they set about learning English. The alphabet is a collection of letters and sounds which forms the foundation of the English language. Learning the names and shapes of the letters of the alphabet is the first step towards reading and, subsequently, writing.

Learning to read is very different from learning to speak, and it does not happen all at once. There is a steady progression in the development of reading ability over time. Once the children are able to speak, they can begin developing basic reading skills. With reading comes more vocabulary and curiosity that can help them acquire and develop socio-economic skills to express themselves better and gain more knowledge about the environment they live in. Writing is a complex task that involves both motor and critical-thinking skills. It is not surprising that learning to write is a process that takes years to accomplish. It also happens in order, with each skill building on the last. Since handwriting is a basic tool used in many subjects − taking notes, taking tests, and doing classroom work and homework for almost every content area as well as in language arts classes, a lack of skill in this aspect will have a pervasive effect on school performance.

The Reading and Handwriting Workbook series introduces our young learners to concepts of print using the correct sequence of strokes, familiarises them with the upper-case and lower-case versions of each letter and helps them practise pronouncing letters and words. Comprehension questions are designed to train them to derive information from passages and make conclusions that are based on observations and analytical skills. Every worksheet incorporates an interesting line-up of fun activities to captivate and engage the learner.
