CROESO—WELCOME SHWMAE We’re half way through 2020 and we hope that, by now, you and your loved ones have found some peace and a sense of normality in these surreal times. Whilst John and I are lucky our friends and loved ones are well, we know that for many of our wonderful readers this has been a very anxious time. So, dear reader, thank you for continuing to support our wonderful community, our amazing small businesses, and reading our magazine. If you’re a key worker or work for the NHS, John, Will, Katherine, and everyone at the Penarth View team would like to say a special thank you for your hard work, not only through this pandemic, but every single day of the year. We hope that our latest edition of Penarth View, brought to you by the wonders of technology, will continue to be useful, positive, and entertaining. We love the feel of a magazine, so we’re quite sad that we haven’t been able to print this issue. That won’t stop us though from living our mantra: switch off, relax on, and let’s escape— just remember to turn off those notifications. The emails, Aunty Edna’s GIF of a sausage dog dancing for the weekend, and the text message from the bank telling you their latest COVID-19 developments can wait. Time for you. Whilst our plan this summer was to share our love of summer festivals—R.I.P. Glastonbury 2020— we feel that celebrating Penarth Coming Together is by far a better theme in the current climate. Social distancing
2
hasn’t stopped us from bringing you the latest in community, creative, business, health and wellbeing, nutrition, food, fitness, and many more stories from our amazing team. You may also see that many of our advertisers featured in this issue are familiar. This is because we wanted to help all of the, quite frankly, brilliant businesses that make Penarth so special to bounce back as soon as possible by offering them free advertising. So we implore you, plead with you, and ask in our sweetest voices, to stay local, buy local, and support local. At the start of 2019, 99.3% of the total businesses in the UK were small businesses (those employing 0-49 employees). They total a whopping 5.82 million businesses! We need you now, more than ever to help us continue to provide you with the very best services for our community. Some of our wonderful clients have already started to adapt their business to still serve you—take a look and keep your eyes peeled as we share more stories online with you throughout the summer. Whilst we’re not new to online platforms, we’re certainly new to publishing everything we have to offer online, so please share us, tag your friends, and let us know what you think. We wish you all good health, strength, and spirit as we navigate the next few weeks and beyond. “Life always offers you a second chance. It’s called tomorrow.” —Dylan Thomas Will, John, Katherine and the Penarth View team.

THE NHS IS OPEN FOR SERVICE Words by Adam Ware, a Children and Young People’s Nurse at Cardiff University. A born and bred Penarthian, he’s recently returned home to retrain after a short stint in Brighton.
When asked to write a piece on health for the summer edition of Penarth View, I racked my brain trying to think of a subject other than COVID-19. However, the truth of the matter is that it is dominating our health landscape, and rightly so. This pandemic has affected all of us, both directly, via increased hospital admissions, adjustments to our everyday lives, and indirectly, through the unfortunate cancellation of surgeries or treatments. The COVID-19 pandemic has hijacked the public conversation from the rest of healthcare to such a degree that A&E attendance has plummeted, health visitor interactions have gone down, vaccination appointments have been missed, and GPs have found themselves with appointments that should have been made weeks ago.
4
The idea presented to us about flattening the curve was to stop the NHS becoming overwhelmed, so it could continue to function as close to normal as possible. However, flattening the curve was not intended as a reason to avoid using the NHS altogether. By doing this, we inadvertently apply more pressure to health professionals, who are facing the management and diagnosis of conditions that perhaps could have been mitigated if patients were seen at an earlier stage. The fact is we all need to work as a team, because now, more than ever, the NHS and the amazing members of the public need to be on the same page. The outpouring of generosity towards the NHS at this time has demonstrated how highly the public think of us. It is for this reason that I say COVID-19 has not closed the NHS. Remember that ignoring symptoms, or thinking that you’ll just rebook appointments at a later time, won’t do anyone a favour. There are provisions in place to deal with the times we live in, and we are ready to help you. After all, it’s why we decided to work in healthcare. So, please, call your health visitor if you’re having problems breastfeeding, make an appointment to see your GP about that lump or rash, and keep that appointment to have your child vaccinated. PENARTH LIFEBOAT STATION UPDATE Words by Andy Berry, Penarth Lifeboat Station Shore Crew and Press Officer
Who would have predicted at the start of the year that this spring and summer time would see the UK in lockdown as a result of COVID-19? I think it is fair to say that we are all struggling with the practicalities of living under lockdown, at a time when many of us would like to be making the most of school holidays and the good weather. For the volunteer crew members and supporters at RNLI Penarth Lifeboat Station, COVID-19 has brought its own challenges. The most important thing for us is to maintain our operational services, with the aim of saving lives at sea. If our pagers activate we will respond and our lifeboats will launch. We’ve thought very carefully about the arrangements for accessing the lifeboat station, making sure we can launch, without bringing excess crew together. We have the equipment we need to manage shouts and protect our crew members and any casualties we treat. We have, however, had to curtail practical training sessions, though as a crew we remain in touch via teleconferencing and online training exercises.
20
Any lifeboat call will put additional pressure on RNLI volunteers and other front line emergency services as well as potentially exposing them to COVID-19. Whilst we normally love to see people enjoying our coast, at this time we do not recommend that this exercise is on or in the sea. We know people who live at the coast still want to exercise by the sea, but when you do this, please think of the potential impact of your actions. While you could be fully competent and may never need to be rescued, by going out on the water you could encourage others who are less proficient to take part in similar activities. Our safety advice for those who do venture out to the coast remains the same: Take care near cliffs. Know your route and your limitations. Check the weather forecast and tide times. If you fall into the water unexpectedly FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and float. In any coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
One of the biggest challenges the RNLI, as a charity, faces is our ability to fundraise, which has been has been severely impacted. This could be the biggest storm the RNLI has ever faced. If people feel compelled to show their support from home, we ask them to help by giving something that keeps our volunteers ready to launch, replaces worn-out kit or helps us repair a lifeboat. To support our lifesavers, go to www.rnli.org/donate

Penarth Sounds has been developed by a collective of Penarth residents in six short weeks to bring together members of the community, showcase the creativity of the town’s residents and share news and stories from their home town. The project has been funded by the members of the collective, with help from Penarth Town Council. Stream online at www.penarthsounds.co.uk, and programmes can be listened to again after the first broadcast. Full details about the programmes and schedules are available on the site.

Feeding the Frontline Penarth businesses have rallied to support frontline workers by making delicious meals for staff in local hospitals and care homes. Matt & Charlotte from Willmore’s 1938 have donated over 1,000 items for University Hospital Llandough, including meals, toiletries, pyjamas, and much more. Father and daughter team James and Georgia Sommerin have made over 12,000 meals for the University Hospital of Wales since the beginning of lockdown. Collaborating with Waterloo Tea, the team provided meals to frontline staff who are putting their lives at risk every day. Alison and the team at The Crêpe Escape have also been donating treat boxes to frontline workers. She says “it isn’t much, but a treat box or an afternoon tea, just to make their day a little better, felt like something small we could do to help.”
Welsh Tough Titties Three Penarth women, Julie Johnson, Charlotte Court and Julia Bakshi, collectively going by the name Welsh Tough Titties, were due to do the Walk The Walk challenge in London on Saturday, 16 May. It was understandably postponed, but trained, ready and able, they instead decided to walk the same distance –26.2 miles– in Cardiff on Sunday, 17 May. Requiring a 5am start, they called it the Sunrise Walk. Money raised will go to Breast Cancer Care, City Hospice and will also feed NHS staff at University Hospital Llandough.

SOMEBODY TO LEAN ON
Zoya Yousef has just finished her last year at Stanwell School, albeit earlier than planned, and she is hoping to study law in London come September. She’s lived in Penarth her whole life, and has for the past two years been working at the Haven Spa, alongside volunteering with the local charity Heart Research Wales. More recently, however, she’s been spending her time with the Penarth Helping Hands COVID-19 support group. We spoke with Zoya, socially-distanced of course, about the volunteer group and why she decided to join.

Can you tell our readers a little about Helping Hands?
Helping Hands is a voluntary group in Penarth, it brings together the whole community to unite against these challenging times. Our wonderful group is filled with so many diverse people of different ages, backgrounds and talents, so it is lovely to see everyone collaborate.
What inspired you to join Helping Hands Penarth?
I remember it was the evening that Boris Johnson announced the closure of schools and cancellation of exams. I had been working relentlessly to get into university, and nnow that everything I had worked for was in a state of uncertainty, I was so confused. Although, pretty quickly I realised that all my work hadn’t been for nothing. Whilst memorising mathematical equations and French verb conjugations may not be that useful for Helping Hands, the skills I learnt in school have been of great value: the ability to communicate with others confidently, to think outside the box, and to be organised. I didn’t want to waste everything I had learnt so I put myself forward to support Helping Hands and give back to the community that I have always been a part of. Now there’s not a day that I don’t speak to Kathryn Easthope (who set up the group) and I am so glad that I’ve been able to help where I can.
What has the response been like from volunteers?
We have been totally overwhelmed with support from volunteers—it really shows how kind all the people in Penarth are and how grateful we should all be for our lovely neighbours!
PenarthView #LovePenarth
What kind of support do volunteers offer?
We have really tried to make the group as accessible and inclusive as possible so everyone can share their interests and help out. At its core, volunteers can offer to collect shopping and prescriptions, as well as offer a friendly call to check in on people who are shielding or self-isolating. However, we have been expanding little projects like our Activity Banks—boxes of activities, DVDs, books, games and toys, which are scattered all around Penarth. We have over ten boxes in circulation, so feel free to grab anything if you’re ever passing one to keep you entertained! We’ve recently set up a Seed Exchange Box too, so that people can swap gardening goodies like plants, pots, seeds and seedlings. It’s on a swap or donate premise, so if you cannot swap anything we kindly ask that you make a donation to our JustGiving page, which we will use to keep the box topped up. Surplus funds will be used to support those in our community on the frontline. The Seed Exchange Box is located at 19 Woodland Place, Penarth. All these little projects are managed by volunteers for which we are super thankful!

What are the positives that have come out of this pandemic that you would like to see continue into the future?
The community spirit has definitely been humbling—to see people who don’t know each other go to lengths to support one another has been amazing. As well as this, to see people supporting local businesses—the shops and cafés that line our town centre streets and make our community so special and unique. I have also enjoyed seeing everyone explore more of Penarth, taking walks and bike rides locally to enjoy our beautiful little town. I hope all of this will continue in the future!
Have there been any standout moments or stories for you over the past few months?
I would definitely say the Activity Boxes have filled me with so much joy. Being a bit of a bookworm myself, and valuing the importance of reading, it has been wonderful to see other people embrace it too! I love seeing children walk by and get excited by finding a good read. It is definitely harder for younger ones during this pandemic, so it’s nice to see the boxes benefit the children within our community. SEW MANY HANDS HELP OUT
Raising over £5,000, the volunteer group Scrub a Dub Dub is one of Penarth’s positive community-driven stories to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. We spoke to Vivienne Mumby who started the group from a Facebook post calling for people to help make scrubs, masks, protective bags, headbands, and other PPE. The result? A community group coming together to make over 650 scrubs and many other garments since March— all helping those working on the frontline in hospitals, care homes, and more recently, health and social care workers.
26
Can you tell us a little about Scrub a Dub Dub and how it started?
It all started from a post on Facebook calling for volunteers to help make scrubs for those working on the frontline. I didn’t expect it to go viral, and the response was amazing! After finding myself with a temporary lull in work, I wanted to help, and found others were wanting to do the same. I used my old contacts from being a wardrobe mistress when I worked in theatre and sourced the correct materials, fabric, and threads from mills in the north. We then set out on finding people with the correct skills and equipment and fundraising to buy the correct materials needed. We then set to work creating patterns for people to follow, which were printed by

Hi-Plan in Penarth, and finally set up the logistics to cut, create, and deliver to the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough. With the help of all of our volunteers, which include people who can sew, cut patterns, provide technical support, fundraise, and people who deliver materials and garments where needed, we’ve managed to help those on the frontline.
What has the response been like from volunteers?
There’s been an incredible community effort from Penarth, Sully, Barry, and Dinas Powys. What’s been really nice is how all the people involved have come out to offer their time. We needed more than just people who can sew. We’ve had volunteers give up their time to cut out patterns, wash the fabrics, even sew on buttons to make the PPE clothing more comfortable for those who have to wear it. We’ve also had people who delivered the items to the places that need them—it has been a big operation and something that’s been a full-time job in itself! I must say, it’s been a huge team effort that I cannot take all the credit for. I’d also like to mention Lisa Petherick, who has also been instrumental in organising and running the project. At its peak, we had around 50 people sewing and making, plus many others helping us out.
Are you looking for more hands? How can people sign up to volunteer?
Although demand in hospitals has started to die down, we’ve seen a slight increase for those working in health and social care settings. More recently,
PenarthView #LovePenarth
we’ve been able to provide items for people working in the community, such as mental health teams, dieticians, care workers, practice nurses, care home staff, and school staff. We ^ Hafan in Sully. even supplied Ty If you’re a competent dressmaker, have a sewing machine, and an overlocker, get in touch through our Facebook group. At the moment, we’re keeping everything local to try and keep the operation as safe as possible for everyone. However, if you’re reading from further away, there are national campaigns like For The Love of Scrubs that you can also get in touch with and support.
How can people request support?
Jump onto our Facebook group and get in contact: Scrub a Dub Dub Penarth.
What are the positives that you’ve seen from supporting the community?
Some of the comments we’ve received from people who have worn our scrubs have been very rewarding. The frontline staff have commented on how the lightweight fabric we used has made a big difference in the warm weather. We’ve also had thank you messages from staff who wore our headbands for extra comfort when wearing visors. The RNLI Penarth Lifeboat Station has also mentioned us for providing wash bags. It’s also been heartwarming to see pictures of people wearing our scrubs and accessories, which makes it all worth the effort! The great community effort from everyone involved with Scrub a Dub Dub has been great. From people who made two scrubs and a few masks, to those who had more time and made loads! It’s been truly heartwarming. Thank you.

PENARTH PIER: A TIMELINE It is the elegant jewel in the crown of the Garden by the Sea, and one of the last remaining Victorian piers in Wales. Penarth Pier celebrates its 125-year anniversary this year. Here’s a timeline of the pier’s highlights.

After receiving more funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the 650 foot structure was fully restored, and a formal reopening took place in May 1998.
While the pier had undergone extensive repairs, the Pavilion itself was deteriorating rapidly.
A £3.9m refurbishment scheme commencing in 2008 involved the restoration and redevelopment of the Pavilion for use as a cinema, café, observatory and multipurpose community complex. The project completed in 2013.
In July 2018, Hollywood stars, Dame Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent tread the board of Penarth Pier whilst filming the war drama Six Minutes to Midnight.
In 2017, Snowcat Cinema pops up at the Pavilion, and remains there until today as an established cinema.

KEEPING IT LOCAL FOR YOUR GUT Influencer
Angharad Evans Penarth-based Nutritional Therapist
Being diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder led me to discover the Hilary Newman Clinic, where I embraced the power of natural remedies. Within months, I no longer needed medication to manage my illness. I was inspired by this treatment and retrained as an Allergy and Nutritional Therapist. I now have a clinic in the heart of Penarth where I offer bespoke treatment to patients for a variety of illnesses.
Spending more time at home, gardening and cooking, supporting local businesses, and rediscovering local walks and beauty spots has been refreshing. However, are you aware that keeping things local is also beneficial for your gut? Hippocrates famously said “all disease begins in the gut”. The importance of our intestinal health has received more and more attention over the last couple of years. You possibly have been taking your morning probiotic, for example. With digestion and immunity being important functions of the gut, there’s no wonder that what we eat has a huge impact on our entire being. You may have heard of microbiome? The gut wall is covered with micro-biome. What is it? Bacteria. Good bacteria. It’s estimated that
40
www.penarthview.co.uk
there’s at least 30,000 different species in our gut. This diversity is essential to our health. Check your probiotics. How many species does it state? Is it anywhere near 30,000? If we’re adding a few of the same species every morning, we’re creating a monoculture and not encouraging a diverse environment, so it’s worth not being over reliant on these products for the health of our gut. Latest research suggests that by leaving the micro-biome be, it will replenish by itself, without the need of these probiotic products. This is possible if we’re not, albeit unknowingly, destroying the thing whose whole purpose is to protect us. Overuse of antibiotics is on top of the list of things causing damage to our gut. The use of pesticides and antibiotics in our food, GMO foods, processed foods, over-indulging on alcohol and coffee, and poor diet all have a negative effect on our gut by destroying our micro-biome. So, is it worth taking probiotic? It’s believed that taking a probiotic short term is fine, after, for example, taking a dose of antibiotic. Our micro-biome has the crucial role in utilising the nutrients from our food. Eating healthily is crucial, but it gets more interesting. What else affects our micro-biome? Our local environment. Recent studies have shown that hunter-gatherers’ micro-biome is directly influenced by everything they literally touch! Food today is highly sterilised and processed. What can we do? Go out, experience everything in our local nature. Perhaps you’re guilty of eating a monotonous diet throughout the year? Potatoes, broccoli and carrots are firm favourites. Nobody in history has eaten like this. Eating seasonally
PenarthView #LovePenarth
and locally reinforces the natural behaviour in our micro-biome which then has an impact on our metabolism of food. You’re one of the lucky ones if you have a veg patch in your garden or have an allotment. The micro-biome signals to the rest of the body what’s happening in your environment. That’s why we benefit from eating local food. In relation to this, ensuring we’re eating from a non-stressed plant/animal makes us more resilient against disease. This, as well as being pesticide free, is another reason for eating organically. Keeping things local is the new normal, so it’s good to know that we’re coincidentally helping our gut health too!

As a Personal Fitness Trainer, with my company LiveFIT Wales Cymru, I work in the community, for the community, and with the community on their health and fitness. Life is short. Without moving our bodies and eating healthily, it’s shorter still. I’m also the health and fitness expert for S4C’s FFIT Cymru and QVC, the UK’s largest shopping and lifestyle network.
Oprah Winfrey says in her book What I Know for Sure that “the only time we have for sure is now”. That mantra has stuck with me and it guides how I live day-to-day. When the news of lockdown was announced, I knew that staying fit, strong and healthy during the pandemic was going to be on many people’s minds. I knew that LiveFIT Wales Cymru, the fitness company I run with my friend Kath, would be able to continue to help our members and others who lived further afield to either stay fit and healthy or, to start a new journey.
42
So far, LiveFIT Wales Cymru has hosted over 75 online fitness classes for our local members, as well as welcoming people from Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Caerphilly, Worcestershire, Kent, and even the USA! One unexpected aspect of this crisis is that it’s brought people from different parts of the world to us, giving us a chance to build new relationships and share our passion for your wellbeing. I mention this because these people realised too, that “the only time we have for sure is now” to focus on our health, fitness, and wellbeing. To put on our own oxygen mask first, before we help others. If we don’t harness this aspect of our lives, we can all picture what the alternative could look like. Here, we can really see what our futures could be like, which is why there is a feeling of unity, coming together, and like-mindedness. I think people are realising more than ever that without our health, we really have nothing at all.

DE-CLUTTER FAST WITH MASONS Daffodils are just starting to poke their heads up, which can only mean one thing: spring is on its way! And one of our favourite things about spring is the chance to freshen up our homes.

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up shot her to fame. Plus, online, there has been the rise of clean-fluencers such as Mrs Hinch, who currently has over 3 million Instagram followers. Mrs Hinch and her followers, aka #HinchArmy, are all about keeping our homes organised and squeaky clean. So, it looks like we’re all looking for a bit of order at home! Looking for some inspiration for where to start with our own decluttering here at Penarth View HQ, we turned to our friends at Masons Self Storage. The team at Masons are frequently used by their customers for home improvement projects and decluttering. Self storage is the perfect stopgap for any home projects that need a bit of space. We asked the team at Masons what they had learnt from their customers' experiences over the years. They shared with us possibly the best decluttering advice, and it even has its own acronym: F.A.S.T!

Fix a time in which you’re going to tackle the clutter, and stick to it. Anything not used in 12 months has to go. We have to be honest with ourselves, those trousers that we’ve had for years— hoping that one day they’d fit again—it’s time for them to find a new home. Someone else’s stuff. Masons told us this was one of the big reasons some of their customers take out selfstorage. Often their children are away at university or travelling, and they’d like to use their old bedroom but don’t want to throw away their possessions. Trash. After sorting through your belongings, you may have two piles. One for the bin (or to donate) and another of things that you don’t need in your home but you’re not ready to part with.

LOCAL FEEL, GLOBAL OUTLOOK We had a chance to ask Dr Gerard Griffiths, Principal of Westbourne School, how a global approach to education can make a huge difference in children’s education and development. Although situated in the heart of Penarth, it’s clear to see how Westbourne School celebrates its own international culture, and harnesses it to support students’ education. Could you give our readers an overview of the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Westbourne?
Could you tell us a little bit about how Westbourne uses educational programmes for a global audience? I know it is the expectation of all schools to encourage their students to be global citizens, but at Westbourne we allow our children to live this experience on a daily basis. We have about 25% international students from all over the world studying alongside students from throughout Penarth, Cardiff and the wider Vale. We draw on all their experiences at every opportunity to enhance the education of all our school community, as well as creating many international links across the globe. This also promotes a culture of inclusion, so our students feel comfortable in sharing ideas and stories from their own part of the world. 46
The IB Diploma programme is an academically demanding international curriculum that is specifically designed to develop the key skills required for university and the workplace. Critical thinking skills, leadership development and the discipline to write research essays is taught alongside six subject choices, developing subject breadth and depth. Offering students independent learning in a global context and an experience that will stay with them forever, the Diploma is highly regarded by top universities across the globe.
Could you tell us some recent success stories from some of your students who have completed your full IB Diploma programme? There are numerous examples of initially shrinking violets who grow in both resilience and confidence to become head boys/girls, of students who excel in areas they did not think possible, and those who take an alternative route to incredible success. Our head boy last year arrived from Tirana, Albania.
www.penarthview.co.uk
Two years ago, English was his second language and his ambition was to study Medicine in the UK. A compulsory aspect of the IB is to learn a secondary language, and he chose French. He excelled so much he was torn between Medicine and Modern Languages. Instead, he decided to apply to Montpellier University to study Medicine through French.
Having 90% of your IB students graduate to Russell Group universities must be a huge achievement. What goes into achieving a stamp of approval like this? The IB Diploma itself allows our students to present themselves at interview with incredible confidence, because they can talk of what they have done not only what they would like to do. Our head boy two years ago spent his summer between lower and upper sixth at a university in Germany studying an aspect of Physics he was keen to investigate. On his own fruition he applied to a professor at the University of Cologne to spend his summer in his department - the professor was so impressed by his letter that he was invited to spend three months with him. He returned to school having not only researched with a PhD group, he also learnt German too. Experiences like this are common practice - and shows why admissions departments are keen to listen to IB students.
What would you say to parents and students who are thinking about the IB programme?
Finally, congratulations for achieving #1 rankings in the UK School league tables for the past five years. What do you think makes Westbourne stand out from other schools? A clear and simple ethos, an exceptional sense of school community and a committed long term plan.
Applications are currently open for September 2020 entry into Nursery, Prep, Senior School and Sixth Form. Personal tours and taster days are welcomed all year round.

If families are keen for their sons and daughters to be challenged in a climate of global citizens, developing an advanced skill-set as well as incredible resilience, then I would encourage them to explore the IB Diploma fully.

So what better time to get the kids to sit down and write letters to those they can’t visit during this time. Maybe even include a painted picture or drawing. Much better than a text, we think.

Fruit lollies A wonderfully fun activity for the whole family to get involved in. And the best part is, you can be as inventive as you want. Why not make lemonade and fruit ice lollies? Or maybe orange or apple juice lollies? And for the parents, a nice gin and tonic lolly for when the day is done and the kids are in bed.

PENARTH SKYTOWN GATEWAY
You may have already seen Penarth’s newest public sculpture taking shape at the new entrance to Dingle Park, Windsor Road, one of the town’s gateways. Always interested to find out more, we’ve been talking to Ruth Spiller, Creative Designer at Bristol’s Cod Steaks, who won the public commission to design the sculpture.
50
www.penarthview.co.uk
PENARTH VIEW CREATIVE SECTION SPONSORED BY ROWLEY’S THE JEWELLER
THE JEWELLERS How did Cod Steaks start, and what’s the inspiration behind the name? That’s without a doubt our most commonly asked question. The company was started nearly forty years ago by our MD, Sue Lipscombe, working in the film, TV and animation industries building Oscar-winning sets, props and modelmaking. We design and build everything in-house ,which also includes museums, theming and exhibitions, and we have a particular passion for public art. When Sue created the company she wanted a memorable name—one evening, on opening the fridge at home, she saw the cod steaks, and the rest, as they say, is history.
What can you tell us about your project Penarth Skytown Gateway? We’ve absolutely loved working on this commission and were honoured to be selected as the artist. After researching the area we had a loose concept in mind and following several weeks of community engagement developed Skytown to celebrate the area—it’s distinctly Penarth, characteristic of the area and we hope it will bring an enormous amount of enjoyment to everyone that sees it.
What did the project involve? Could you talk us through the process.
After a process of tendering for the commission, we worked closely with the council to build a community engagement programme. This involved hands-on workshops at two local schools, and an open day to get feedback from the very people who will live alongside the final artwork. It’s absolutely critical that the end result is something for the community, past, present and future generations, as much as it being adventurous and unique

in its own right. We then developed our concept for presentation and once it had been given the green light started fabrication at our workshops in Bristol. This included the lighting design, plans for the installation as well as the structural calculations. Over 4000 individual elements were precision cut in steel and welded together to make Skytown.
What impact did Windsor Road being a gateway to the town have on the design?
The commission brief was specific from the outset that the artwork should be both a gateway to the park and gateway to Penarth. As such we wanted something that celebrated the whole town and its heritage as well as sitting sympathetically within the park. I think the buildings we’ve chosen reflect the unique architecture of the area, bringing well-loved and distinctive landmarks together, but the lamp-post trees and lighting make this a charming and welcoming feature symbolic of the natural environment around it.
51
How did you choose which buildings to use?
During the community consultation phase we asked local residents what they loved about Penarth and if there were landmarks that they felt particularly attached to, or that held significance for the area. From a long-list we whittled it down to a wonderful spectrum of buildings that had been suggested and, from an artistic perspective, sat well together. The buildings we’ve used represent both landmarks and a sense of place, also referencing Penarth’s proximity to the sea and tourism, as well as its history and importance. Collectively too, we felt the buildings used were distinctively Penarth—unlike nowhere else.
How tall is it?
The sculpture is a few millimetres shy of 4m tall at its highest point.
What is it made from?
The sculpture is handmade from steel, and painted with highly robust exterior paints. The paint finish is artworked to look like bronze, with a verdis-gris patina on the buildings.
What was most challenging working on this project?
In all seriousness it has been an absolute joy to work on throughout. The most challenging aspect has been out of everyone’s hands, in that we haven’t been able to complete the site works yet. We’re looking forward to coming back after the lockdown lifts to complete the artworking and see the lights working. 52
What stands out as being one of the highlights from Penarth Skytown Gateway?
Without a doubt it’s been meeting the people in Penarth and working with local schools in the workshops. Their enthusiasm and ideas were hugely valuable in those early stages. Knowing too that the sculpture will be lit is also a huge highlight – look out for the lighthouse!
What makes the work you do so special?
Everyone at Cod Steaks loves what they do, and loves working together – it’s a team effort, combining great integrity and creative experience. We put an enormous amount of passion and imagination into our work and I hope that comes across in Skytown.
What do you feel when you deliver some great work for communities like Penarth?
We feel an enormous sense of achievement when we create something that is embraced by the community. To know we’ve captured their imagination and heart is extremely valuable to us, and we feel very proud to have contributed something so permanent to their legacy. When you’re out next walking the dog, or going for a run, make sure you take in the town’s newest sculpture, Penarth Skytown Gateway at Dingle Park.

MAKING YOUR MIND KIND Words by Will Summers, Penarth View Co-editor
Change has always been a catalyst for shifts in mood, energy levels, and mental health. It’s fair to say a lot has changed since March! I don’t think any of us could have foreseen the huge changes to our social lives, physical health, and mental wellbeing that COVID-19 has set. Whilst I’m sure many of us promised ourselves to start exciting new projects, travel plans, or improve our wellbeing at the beginning of 2020, the pandemic has certainly made us take a rain-check. It’s clear that the pandemic has affected different people in different ways, and, for many, one day can drastically change to the next. It’s also hard not to notice the outpouring of gratitude, thanks, and empathy shown to those who have sadly lost their loved ones, those in isolation, and those that are working hard to keep everything going. Thank you! Personally, lockdown has been a rollercoaster experience, with anxiety attacking in the first two weeks for the health of our close family and friends, and the future of our businesses in jeopardy.
56
Week three started with a determination to adjust, adopt, and adapt to the ‘new normal’, followed by a new-found love for social distancing in week four. Well, after week four, whose been counting? Being a social butterfly myself, I found it a little strange at first settling into a calmer, and less social lifestyle. I’m surprised at how much I’ve begun to like my own company. In the past, I’ve been guilty of using every spare second of time, so it isn’t wasted, piling things onto my to-do list and saying ‘yes’ to too many people. I’ve stopped. I’ve taken time. And it feels good. Whilst I’ve never been one to sit still and am known by friends as a ‘Chatty Cathy’, I know I haven’t always got the balance right. In the past, I’ve juggled three jobs and a house renovation, all while trying to deal with a family bereavement—looking back it’s no wonder my head was fried! Having come out the other side of that now, I’ve made it my mission to make my headspace a positive one. Space where negative thoughts, habits, and internal dialogues become comforting, responsible, and kind thoughts for myself and others. The result? A calmer, happier, and more comfortable mind. It sounds easy, but it’s taken a lot of work. Improving mental health and wellbeing isn’t always a walk in the park and luckily, I’ve found a few things that have helped over the past seven years. So, if your mind isn’t being kind, or sometimes needs a nudge in the right direction, try some of these exercises, tips and mindful tricks to help you navigate out of COVID-19 this summer. Stay safe, talk to each other, and talk to a professional if you need to.

IT’S OK. OK? Words by Katherine Peach, Penarth View Sales Associate
I don’t have to tell you that these are difficult times. But I think it’s safe to say we never thought lockdown would be this hard. Stay inside? Don’t go to work? Get to spend your days doing whatever you want? That should be easy, right?
58
It’s okay that you’re having a hard time adjusting. It’s human nature to create a routine for yourself. We don’t thrive in chaos, so we do our best to control and order the things around us. But no matter how organised we are, or how we control the scenarios in front of us, we just have to accept the fact that sometimes things aren’t going to go the way we want it. And that’s okay. With all the extra time on our hands, it’s no wonder that we find ourselves endlessly scrolling through social media, in an attempt to make ourselves feel more at ease. Yet we find ourselves bombarded by strangers displaying all the wonderful things they’ve been doing, celebrities giving you the best home workout routine, or your old high school friends showing off their new skills.
www.penarthview.co.uk
At first, I found myself feeling really guilty that I wasn’t doing the new 30day ab workout, or learning to bake, or paint. I felt guilty that I wasn’t getting up early every morning and honing my new skills. I hated myself for not being super productive every waking minute. The voice in my head was asking why I hadn’t written a book, or learnt to play the piano, or become fluent in French. Never giving myself the time to breathe and relax—time which I should have given myself to accept the situation. But it was ridiculous to think that I was alone in feeling like this. So if ever you start to feel yourself slipping into a spiral of guilt, remember this—it’s okay! It’s okay that you didn’t get up until midday today, or that you didn’t have a healthy breakfast. It’s okay that you spent most of the day bingewatching a show you’ve been dying to watch. It’s okay that you stayed in your pyjamas. It’s okay that you still haven’t done that DIY project that’s been staring you in the face for the past four months. It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay that you’re struggling with this new normal, because believe me, you’re not the only one. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed or angry, it’s okay! If spending a day watching TV makes you feel calm and relaxed, do it! If you want to have a lie in or spend the day just sitting and reading you’re favourite book, do it! Having said that, if you find yourself falling into a pattern of activities that make you feel grumpy and groggy, it may be time to mix up your routine. Do just one thing slightly different. Maybe do try a workout video, or do a second attempt at that Victoria sponge. But do
PenarthView #LovePenarth
it because it makes you feel better, not because some old high school classmate made you feel bad about yourself. This is your time as much as anyone else’s. You may be luckier than others, your situation may be easier than most. But that doesn’t mean that those feelings rattling around inside your head aren’t valid. Don’t apologise for feeling that way. Accept these feelings instead of pretending they’re not there, and try to find healthy ways of dealing with these emotions. And it’s okay if you’re not feeling so great—reach out. Reach out to friends and family, even if it’s just for a little chat over the phone or a quick video chat. Remember you are not going through this alone. Once you realise that there is nothing to feel guilty about, you can begin dealing with these emotions better. Despite everything going on, we can take comfort in the fact that it won’t last forever. And in six months’ time, we will be able to look back on this and see the positives within it. The moment when we took the time to reconnect with our families, the spent quality alone time we always wanted. The time we realised what was really important. The time when we played board games until we mastered them all, sunbathed outside with our questionable homemade cocktails. I, for one, have never been prouder of this community. We will look back on these days and see how when crisis hit, we didn’t hide away from our neighbours. We did whatever we could to help and I hope these actions will carry through once this is all over.

PROTECT THE SKIN YOU’RE IN Influencer

I have a background in pharmacology, psychiatry and addictions spanning over 30 years. I love to consider all things to do with health and wellbeing, of both the mind and the body. I believe good lifestyle decisions are made when we have the right information.
You may have already seen this image, which has been doing the rounds on the internet since 2012. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this photo of a truck driver shows what 28 years of sun damage looks like. The trucker has had his left side exposed to UVA rays transmitted through his window–whereas his right side was covered and relatively unharmed.
Picture: New England Journal of Medicine
Ultraviolet rays are a form of radiation from the sun. UVA penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin and causes ageing, whilst UVB causes burning. Both cause skin cancers. UV is invisible. It is not associated with heat or light, and is present all year round. Even on a cloudy day we are being exposed, and even through glass. UV from sun exposure is the number one cause of skin cancers, including melanoma and others. Sadly, UK melanoma rates are still increasing but are largely preventable.

Use sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, states broad spectrum, or has the UVA logo. SPF shows the degree of protection the sunscreen provides against UVB only. Remember, the higher the factor, the greater the level of protection against UVB. The recommendation is SPF 30 at a minimum, but ideally you should be going for SPF 50. Protection against UVA is indicated by the UVA logo enclosed within a circle. This means it has the right proportion of UVA protection in relation to the SPF rating. Use correctly by applying liberally on all exposed areas and reapply throughout the day. Ensure the product is in date and keep it out of extreme heat, so keep it under your sunbed or in your bag. Reapply more often if you are sweating or exposed to water (even if it is waterproof).
2
Use all year round. It will prevent skin cancers and is the best thing to stop premature ageing—pigmentation, age spots, wrinkles and sagging skin. Incorporate it into your daily regime so it becomes routine. Encourage your children to do the same. Sunscreens have vastly improved and many now spread easily, are suitable for sensitive skins and have other skin benefits.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
3
Sunscreens work differently to one another. Some are mineral based, some are chemical based, and some are a combination of the two. Choose one that does not contain harmful chemicals (especially oxybenzone/octinoxate etc.) or nano mineral particles, especially if you are pregnant or are using it on children. Chemicals such as these have been found in our bloodstream and breast milk. Some countries have now even banned the use of these sunscreens as a result of damage to marine life. Look for brands that are certified as safe for the environment.
4
The safest option is to avoid direct sunlight. Sit in the shade, especially at peak times between 11am and 3pm. Wear a wide brimmed or peaked hat and clothing that has a close weave. It’s also possible to buy UV protective clothing. Prevention is better than cure, so make sure you protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun every day— the sooner you start the better.

JE NE SAIS QUOI?! Influencer
Sylvie Pasquier Penarth-based Events Organiser
I was born in Troyes, in the well-known Champagne area of France. Fashion has always been a passion of mine—I was sketching at the age of 8—and I studied haute couture in Paris. I now live in the Vale of Glamorgan with my daughter and a little dog called Lili.
Bonjour! From Troyes, in the well-known Champagne area of France, to Penarth, Sylvie Pasquier is Penarth View’s new fashion influencer. Fashion has always been a passion of hers, sketching ladies wearing pretty and colourful dresses from the age of eight years old. So it was no surprise to anyone when, several years later, she decided to go to Paris to study haute couture. We’re so excited to welcome you to the Penarth View team as our new fashion influencer.
Thank you, Will. Absolutely thrilled to be part of the team. I look forward to sharing my fashion experiences and expertise with you and hope to bring a certain “Je ne sais quoi…?!” to all readers of Penarth View. I’d also like to wish Claire Jacklin, your previous fashion influencer, all the best with her future projects.
62
www.penarthview.co.uk
Thank you! When did you realise that fashion was a passion of yours?
From a very young age actually. Both my parents were very fashion conscious so you could say it was part of my upbringing. I used to watch my mother get ready when she was going out in the evening. She always took great care of her appearance. She was the one who taught me the importance of accessorising and how a key piece such as a necklace or a belt could take an outfit to a completely different dimension! Something I still put in practice today.
What was the first item of clothing that you bought and treasured?
I was barely 18 at the time and it was a jumper—the very brightly coloured and oversized type which was very fashionable at the time. Believe it or not, I kept it in my closet for over 20 years.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I would not describe myself as having one specific style. The type of clothes that I choose every morning very much depend on what I am planning on doing that day. It can range from a sharp suit to a casual pair of cropped trousers and t-shirt, a dress and heels or a pair of jogging bottom and trainers if I am planning on going to the gym.
Has it changed during lockdown?
Most definitely! Lockdown has had a great impact on the way I have been dressing. With the option of going out and meeting people being greatly reduced, my daily choice of clothes has turned more towards casual and lounge wear which is better suited to the stayat-home guidelines during lockdown.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
How has the quarantine been for you and your daughter?
There have been good days and bad days like for most people I guess. My daughter has found it particularly hard not be able to see her friends. But we have enjoyed spending time together, playing board games, baking cakes and going for walks with Lili, our little Jack Russell.
Do you have any lockdown tips you can share with our readers?
Use the time available to go through your wardrobe! We all tend to accumulate clothes which no longer fit or that we no longer wear. A good clear up can really make all the difference and help you reassess your own fashion style.
You mentioned that you liked drawing dresses from a young age. Do you still draw?
I did yes but have not done so for quite a long time now. The last time I used this skill was when I was running my own fashion business back in the early 90s. The clients who contacted me to create an outfit for them really enjoyed having their ideas and wishes translated into a drawing. It helped them visualize the finished product much better.
Tell us a little about your studies and influences in haute couture.
I studied haute couture for three years in the 12e arrondissement of Paris in the same college of art as Christian Louboutin a few years before me. The teachers all had a great deal of experience having worked in the famous fashion houses such as Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Yves St Laurent and Givenchy, to name just a few.

They were strict and very demanding but taught us through the whole process of creating a garment, from the design to the finished product. As part of our final exam we had to create a collection of three outfits to be presented in front of a panel of judges in the form of a mini fashion show. I still remember it as being the most nervewrecking and exhilarating day of my life!
What item of clothing must we always have in our wardrobe?
Pashminas! Which technically could be described more as an accessory than an item of clothing, but everybody should have at least one in their wardrobe. They can really jazz up any outfit by adding a touch of colour and luxury. I find them to be quite useful throughout the year, either wrapped around the shoulders during a cool summertime evening or worn over a jumper to keep you warm in winter.
If there was one thing you could move from Troyes to Penarth, what would it be?
The quirky little streets and buildings in the centre of Troyes, which date back to the 16th century.
What can readers expect to see from you this year?
After lockdown, I believe a selection of bright outfits and accessories is required to bring back some sunshine and fun into our lives.
What three wishes would you ask from a genie?
1. Greater care for our planet. 2. Good health. 3. Great friendship throughout the world!

PASHMINA SCARF IN BLOSSOM £47 Pashmina featuring Melin Tregwynt’s Welsh tapestry design Twmpath in blossom colourway, from Melin Tregwyn local stockist Rowley’s the Jeweller.
What are your three favourite places to be in Penarth?
1. The pier! To enjoy the view and some fresh air. 2. Rowley’s the Jewellers—for a lovely chat with my friend Petra and her husband Cem. 3. Fauvette! I cannot resist the fantastic selection of French cheeses and products! For a minute, I feel as if I am back home.
Finally, what led you to start your own event business?
With my daughter growing up and becoming more independent, I felt that the time was right for me to get back to work. Organising events for friends and family was something I had always really enjoyed doing over the years and it felt like the natural way forward. So S. Events was born.
www.penarthview.co.uk
What types of events do you organise and how can people find out more?
I organize all types really. Birthday celebrations are obviously the most popular, but I also organize baby showers, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties, family picnics, Easter egg hunts for children, business promotions, retirement parties, charity balls, house-warming parties, graduation parties, the list goes on! There have been some unusual ones too—like the time when I was asked if I could organize a divorce party for a lady who had separated from her husband! I also had an enquiry from an older gentleman who had recently lost his wife and asked me whether I arranged wakes. It was something that I had never even thought about until I received this call. So, as you can see, it is pretty varied. The best way to find out more about S. Events is to simply give me a call. It is a very personal service and I find that having an informal chat is not only much nicer, it also makes it easier for me to understand exactly what the person is looking for. Then it is just a matter of arranging an appointment to discuss the finer details and from that point, working still in close collaboration, I make it happen!

Penarth-based Veterinary Surgeon

Having lived and worked in South Wales for 11 years, initially in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Cardiff, I have finally found my home in beautiful Penarth, where I also volunteer as an RNLI crew member. Growing up as the son of a dentist may have influenced my passion for veterinary dentistry.
Whilst coronavirus has gripped the globe, caring and treating animals must continue—albeit socially distanced. Picking up on the genuine concerns of his clients, Dave reassures pet owners in Penarth that everything will be ok. Are vets still open?
Yes most surgeries are still open, but may be running reduced hours and working on a triage system. Most will initially be offering telephone or video consultations. Please be patient with your vet in these unprecedented times. They are working extremely hard to juggle animal welfare at the same time as ensuring human safety. This has been an extremely challenging task, and will continue to be while the backlog of postponed routine work is triaged, and the relative urgency assessed. Please know that your pet’s welfare will always be of utmost importance.

What if my pet is due a vaccine?
Vaccination remains an important part of your pets preventative health care. During the COVID-19 lockdown many pets have had to have their booster vaccinations postponed. Many vaccine licenses, for both dogs and cats, have a three-month grace period depending on the year of vaccination. If it is your pet’s first annual booster after puppy/kitten vaccinations, this has slightly more urgency. Contact your vet and they will advise you on the most appropriate course of action. Many pet insurance companies are allowing flexibility with their policies on routine vaccinations and dental check ups due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have any concerns contact your insurance provider.
How has coronavirus affected our pets’ wellbeing?
Our pets have also had to adapt to the changes associated with coronavirus. For example, our furry felines are very sensitive to changes that we may not even perceive to be a problem. During lockdown we have seen an increase in stress-associated cystitis. All cats can get cystitis but overweight male cats, in multi-cat households are statistically more at risk. If you notice your cat repeatedly visiting his/her litter tray, or urinating inappropriately in the house, contact your vet for advice. Cystitis in male cats can be life threatening if left untreated, as they can suffer the complication of becoming blocked. With mental health being a hot subject during the coronavirus lockdown, it’s worth remembering that studies have shown that owning a pet can reduce the signs of anxiety by the release of the happy hormones dopamine and serotonin.

How can I do more to help?
Many re-homing centres are at bursting point due to the current crisis. If you are considering getting a new pet, please consider re-homing from a charity as your first option. If you feel fostering an animal on a temporary basis is something that you would be able to offer then please contact your nearest re-homing centre for details. This could mean freeing up room for a more vulnerable animal to get the support it needs.

BE AWARE OF HEATSTROKE In warm environments, dogs regulate their body temperature by panting. Heatstroke happens when a dog is unable to do this efficiently which can be very serious and even life threatening. Remember the warning signs of heatstroke: panting or rapid breathing, drooling, lethargy, drowsiness, lack of coordination and eventually collapse, vomiting or diarrhoea. If a dog is displaying any signs of heatstroke, they need to be moved to a cool shaded area and a vet should be contacted immediately. Do not delay in contacting your vet, but you can also follow these steps to cool your dog whilst awaiting veterinary attention.
Move them to a cool area— preferably shaded.
Apply cool (not cold) water to your dog with wet towels. These can be applied to their back, neck and tummy. The breeze of a fan can be useful.
Take them to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.
68
Make sure your dog has access to small amounts of cool water.
Continue to apply cool water to the dog’s coat until their breathing starts to settle. Don’t use ice and do not cool so much that they begin to shiver.

THE BRAND NEW, STATE-OF-THE-ART
valley veterinary hospital Arthritis is a common condition that can affect many of our pets. Did you know that over 80% of dogs over eight years old and 90% of cats over twelve years old have arthritis? Joint pain can cause very subtle behavioural changes that we often assume are just old-age related. For example, has your cat stopped jumping on the window sill or coming up to bed? Does your dog seem stiff after rest, or finds it difficult to find a comfortable position? Please contact your practice who can work with you to help manage your pet’s arthritis, to give them the best quality of life.
Following a diagnosis of arthritis, Park Vets in Penarth, together with their other branch on Sanatorium Road in Cardiff, can work closely with the new Valley Veterinary Hospital to offer priority access to the wide range of services, such as physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. This new facility is less than six miles away, giving owners in Penarth greater peace of mind when their pet requires specialist care, or 24/7 emergency care, close to home.

COME GATHER IN THE KITCHEN
T
Words by Ceri Hill, Chalkhouse Kitchens
he Gardens area of Penarth is always popular, particularly with families, as the traditional houses have great potential. The owners of this home had previously added an extension on their lounge but were struggling with their galley kitchen, especially when they hosted the large family parties they loved. The solution was to open up the kitchen by adding on a large, light-filled family and dining room with space for the twenty-plus guests for Christmas dinner. Replacing the original kitchen window with a contemporary, graphite-grey one ties the original part of the room in with the new matching bi-fold doors that lead out into the sunny garden. With

two resident golden retrievers (plus regular visits from their other four-legged pals) adding a utility room, with external access, where they can be washed down and dried off after a muddy walk or romp outside, was a great solution to avoid dirt being brought into the kitchen. The owners chose a modern slab door for their new kitchen, painted in Designers Guild’s Chalk No. 4 to keep the room light and airy, but then added touches of oak to match their dining table and add warmth to the minimalist scheme. The worktops are a beautiful, pale, hard-wearing quartz with striking marble graining to add some visual interest without dominating the room. The Blanco Silgranit sink

The position of the oak door into the room couldn’t be moved, so a full-height, shallow larder was custom-made to tuck neatly behind the doorframe to keep the tall run streamlined whilst still giving plenty of storage for foodstuff. A bank of wide pan drawers on the island give accessible storage for pots and pans, bowls and crockery beneath the sleek hob. The downdraft extractor behind the hob simply pops-up when cooking and slides neatly out of sight when it’s no longer needed. Housed in a cabinet on the back of the island facing the dining room, it is flanked on either side with feature oak cupboards, one a bookcase, the other a wine rack. What was once a narrow, cramped kitchen is now a beautiful, flexible space, perfect for entertaining, family gatherings and of course two big, fluffy dogs!

Jewels Canley Interiors
I was schooled in Fashion Design before switching to Interior Design. I have a unique talent for sussing out a client’s taste within just minutes, and I’m always bubbling with ideas to transform any space, from residential homes to hotels. Not so secret fact: I’m crazy about dogs!
During these very strange times we find ourselves living in, we have been forced to stay indoors to stay safe. And we have all done really well! Okay. I am sure that by now many people have culled and organised their wardrobes—this seems to have been the number one area to start on. And I bet your drawers are now ready for the summer season—byebye jumpers, and hello strappy vests! Dust has been wiped from every surface, the plants have been watered, things are starting to shine again, and it’s making you think that maybe you should get a bit more creative with your interiors. Here’s some simple ideas of small changes that can make a big difference.
76
1
Fresh frames
Re-frame your family pictures that are scattered along sideboards and hang them up on hallway walls instead. This not only makes the hallway more interesting and warming, but also keeps your surfaces tidy for adding ornaments and flowers instead.

2
Rug swap
Similar to wife swap, but causes less arguments. Moving a rug from one room to another can completely change the vibe of the room. Layering textiles can make a room more cosy, so don’t worry about positioning a rug on top of a carpet.
3
It’s beginning to look a lot like cocktails
Making a bar area in a corner of a room, especially during these times, can be a creative way of filling some time. Make it as ambitious as you like. You could clear a surface, and choose some gorgeous spirit bottles and matching bar utensils to make an instant change. Or by upholstering a piece of plywood, you can create a structure quite easily. And if you’re not quite the chippy, the upholstery on top will cover most of the amateur workings underneath. Great stuff!
Jewels Canley Interiors has been an established company since 1983. Now a mother and daughter business, the brand of Jewels has grown, originally from curtain-making and upholstery, to now expanding in more recent years to develop the interior design avenue. Julie and Hayley work well to create contemporary living with a nod to classic styles in the accents of furniture and accessories.

Thanks be to plants
Hanging plants are a great space saver, and are also great for giving different levels of greenery. Trailing plants can dangle elegantly down the wall to take your eye from table height up towards the ceiling.
5
Pallets please
Remember when pallets were really popular? Well they are back, desperate to be used to make outdoor furniture and ideal for stacking small plants. Paint them in a vibrant colour and enjoy on your balcony with your morning glass of fizz. Fizz in the morning? Yes, I’m talking to you Susan.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Words by Penarth-based interior designer Miffy Shaw
Our homes are the only place we’ve been for months, and I don’t know about you, but I’m looking around at the interior of our home and thinking about what I love around me. Trinkets, photos of holidays and get togethers (which are even more special to me now), and everything that is functional. I’m looking at things that I want to change or freshen up, and all the little jobs I’ve put off for forever! Like most people, I’ve got my DIY projects on in full swing. Our most recent family project has been to build an outside playhouse for our daughter—what a lovely project to work on. It’s been perfect to get stuck into it with the gorgeous weather, and made me realise I’ve never been so grateful for my garden! Spring into summer is a lovely time of year. Whilst we are all at home with our families thinking about when lockdown will end, I’m also sure many of us are thinking about when we can get together again with our loved ones and friends. Although we won’t be meeting up at pubs or restaurants like before, we’ve decided to prepare
78
our garden for our get-togethers—at a sensible distance of course! Now is the perfect opportunity to get creative with your outdoor space. I’ve always been the biggest fan of bringing the outdoors in, but now it’s all about bringing the indoors out. Make the most of this glorious weather, shift your living to the outdoors and treat your garden as another room to cosy up in. Think about how your space works, add plants for colour, outdoor sofas, rugs, candles, fireplaces, lighting, cushions, and plenty of them! A comfortable outdoor space to relax in and spend quality time with your family will add memories and warmth to your home. Here are some musthaves for your outdoor living areas. Shân Eastwood set up her driver guiding business over eight years ago to provide high-end tours for American and European tourists to Wales. With coronavirus, she’s now offering a companion driver service to support people who are shielding, selfisolating or are vulnerable. At the beginning of the year she was planning hotels and booking activities for clients, and looking forward to a full season. As coronavirus took hold, tourism became non-existent, and she started again. She’s adjusted her luxury glass-roofed tourer by adding a sneeze guard and a cleaning station for guests. She’s taken the middle row of seats out of operation so guests can only sit in the rear of the vehicle, and she limits her bookings in order to make time for cleaning. She wears PPE and can provide it to guests if asked. Guests are relieved to find a service that has taken such measures to protect people. There will always be a need to travel, be it to collect shopping or prescriptions, or to attend medical appointments. Being mindful of the devastation that the pandemic has caused, there has been an opportunity to reflect on the local market, build on the service already in place and create new packages to customers when we emerge from the lockdown. At the moment the cards are still in the air for a lot of people, and working dynamically and responding to changes is key.

Keep thinking of all the possibilities.
2 Be open to change and just do it.

You’ll recognise Will as one half of the editorial team at Penarth View, but he also runs Studio64, a music tuition service offering piano, flute, clarinet, and saxophone tutoring. As the virus began to take hold and lockdown restrictions came in, Will felt a mixture of apprehension, worry, and relief! “We pride ourselves on face-toface teaching and building a great relationship with our students. We’re so happy that moving over to technology has only helped strengthen our friendships with our students, and has helped us welcome more students from around the UK.” Sessions now take place exclusively online, and they can now be recorded too, which can be played back by the student when practising, increasing their ability to learn. Although the move to technology was done through necessity, lockdown has made him wonder why they didn’t choose to offer this before! And customers have taken to these changes brilliantly. What’s profound is that every single student has used music to help occupy themselves, learn more skills, and make lockdown a more enjoyable experience. Music really is that healing! “Personally, I’ve noticed a much calmer, peaceful, and thankful audience.”
Will's top tips 82
Embrace online. The jump to online can be daunting if your business is personal. Make the people behind your brand stand out by blogging or creating social media posts. Encourage people to get in contact with you and make sure that every conversation with a customer is nothing short of excellent.
2 Support other local businesses— they make up 99.3% of all businesses in the UK. We all need everyone’s support, now more than ever.
3 Write a thank you note. If your business relies on repeat custom, it’s a great way to recognise your supporters and brand ambassadors. Tell them what they’ve helped you achieve. For us, we managed to keep all of our tutors in work, help two students complete their university degree, and help a student complete a Grade 8 exam over video-conference. People buy from people. Fact.

Tanya, a previous editor at Penarth View says that whilst her freelance business Lynchpin is having a quiet break from the rat race that no longer seems to be racing, lockdown has given her the time and energy to fall back in love with her side project Ease Retreats. Like many in the wellbeing and travel industries Tanya is also waiting for social distancing restrictions to be lifted before being able to get back to it. “I didn’t quite believe the hype to be honest. It took me a good couple of weeks to get my head around the news and work out exactly what to do. During week three, it hit me hard, and I started to think how I could pivot my career and especially how I needed to be resourceful.” Thankfully, through the power of digital platforms, her customers—or her tribe, as she likes to call them—are engaging with her and are all having a hoot. Of course, there are down days, but it’s a supportive network so everyone is able to help each other through the lockdown lull. In fact, this online community will continue into the future, but since the business is primarily dependent on retreats being hosted in gorgeous beach houses along the West Wales coastline, it will only be a sideline to the main offering—social distancing isn’t a given in the retreats industry.
PenarthView #LovePenarth
Tanya's top tips 1
Write a brand manifesto. It’s a good exercise to focus your mind on what your business actually stands for and what its purpose really is.
2 Do one thing and do it well. Remain focused, don’t be distracted by what the rest of the herd are doing.
3 It’s okay to feel vulnerable, and be honest with your customers. If it’s taking longer to complete a project, let your clients know. If they trust in your brand they trust in you.
