Fortitude
When our younger son, Justin, crossed the finish line last October in his first marathon, I thought about all of the running and training that Justin had put into accomplishing his goal of running 26.2 miles. The average runs of 6 to 8 miles, the longer runs of 11 to 13 miles, and the even longer runs of 18 to 20 miles. At the same time, I also thought about the mental fortitude it takes to pound out all of those miles over a span of four to six months of training, and the mental toughness it takes on race day to put one foot in front of the other for 26.2 miles.
Many times, in life, business owners, employees, parents, students, and family members—in essence, all of us—need the same mental fortitude and toughness it takes to run a marathon. Our IQ, education, training, knowledge, and experience will only carry us so far. At times, like Justin did during the last 3 miles of his first marathon, you just have to gut it out.
Hack Spirit, an online information source that addresses social and emotional relationships, published last November the online article, “People with genuine mental toughness usually live by these 5 rules,” by Lachlan Brown, chief editor and founder of Hack Spirit. The following are excerpts from the article.
Rule 1: Embrace Challenges Head-On
When a challenge comes knocking, instead of running the other way, they welcome it with open arms. Every difficulty faced is a weight lifted, making them mentally stronger for the next round. By facing challenges head-on, they learn to handle stress, solve problems, and adapt to change. The first rule of mental toughness is simple: See challenges as opportunities, not threats.
mindset isn’t about ignoring the bad stuff. It’s about facing the bad, dealing with it in a constructive way, and keeping hope alive. Look for the good, focus on solutions, and let positivity be the driving force that propels you forward, even on the hardest days.
Rule 3: Don’t Fear Failure, Learn from It
Most of us dread failure. It feels like a slap in the face, telling us we’re not good enough. But tough-minded people see failure differently. They see it as a teacher, not a judge. When they stumble, they don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves. Instead, they pick themselves up, dust off the dirt, and take a good look at what went wrong.

Rule 4: Stay Committed, Even When It’s Not Fun
The journey toward goals is exciting at first, but let’s be honest, the excitement doesn’t always last. There will be days when motivation vanishes, and all that’s left is the hard, grueling work. This is where mentally tough people shine. They stay committed, even when the going gets tough.
Rule 5: Take Care of Your Tribe
Life is not a solo journey.
Along the way, we have family, friends, and colleagues who become our tribe. They support us, cheer us on, and stand by us during the rough patches. Mentally tough people know the value of these relationships and they make sure to take care of their tribe.
Rule 2: Keep a Positive Mindset, Even When It’s Tough
Life is full of ups and downs. There are days when things go our way, and there are days when everything seems to go wrong. Mentally tough people have a knack for staying positive, even when the clouds of adversity hover. A positive
As we stood near the finish line of the marathon last October, we spotted Justin about one quarter of a mile from the finish line. While I was hopeful his legs would carry him across the finish line, I was also hoping that Justin was thinking about a line from one of his favorite movies, “Forrest Gump,” when Jenny called out to Forrest, “Run, Forrest, run!” Sometimes, when running a marathon or when dealing with the race called life, it’s less about what’s in your legs, and more about what’s in your heart.

SMOKIN’ PROFITS
AS THE AUTHOR OF THE NEW COOKBOOK, 101 THINGS TO DO WITH A SMOKER (2023, Gibbs Smith),
one of my goals is to make the process of smoking foods easy, fun, and approachable. I’ve spoken with many people who initially feel intimidated by this method of cooking. Some folks have heard stories about how challenging it is to cook something more advanced like a brisket and aren’t sure they want to commit to the learning process.
If you sell smokers and smoking equipment, you may have encountered the same hesitation from customers. Helping people discover the versatility and ease of cooking with a smoker can open up new markets and expand your pool of potential buyers.
101 Things to Do With a Smoker has dozens of recipes for all kinds of different foods that can be successfully cooked with a smoker. People are often surprised to learn that they can add the delicious, smoky wood flavor to a range of easy dishes, from beef stew and mashed potatoes to coffee cake and chocolate chip cookies.
SIMPLE RECIPES FOR STORE DEMONSTRATIONS
One of my favorite easy recipes for introducing people to the ease and joy of smoking foods is a tasty snack mix (recipe below). Along with the traditional Chex cereal, I like to add a few surprises like baby Goldfish cheese crackers, mustard pretzels, and potato sticks. The snack mix has
just the right amount of wood-smoked flavor to complement the salty and savory taste of the ingredients. A sample taste helps people instantly understand how appealing it can be to add smoke flavor to more foods than just meats. Smoked olives are also easy to make for demonstrations. The recipe can be prepared from start to finish
in about 45 minutes, so it’s a perfect starter to prepare at the beginning of a longer class if you’re teaching customers about smoker cooking.
After tossing an assortment of green and black olives with olive oil, fresh minced garlic, oregano, and black pepper, spread them in a metal dish, and smoke at 220 degrees F for 40 minutes. After cooling the olives to room temperature, toss them with some shredded Parmesan cheese for a little extra flavor. Served with toothpicks, these never fail to disappear quickly!
Smoked almonds are always popular, and very simple to make. I buy peeled, blanched almonds (available at health food stores) because they absorb the smoke well, but you can also use raw, unpeeled almonds.
Preheat the smoker to 220 degrees F and spread the almonds in a rimmed metal pan. Smoke for 90 minutes, stirring twice during cooking. Stir in a tablespoon of melted butter and a drizzle of olive oil to coat the almonds.
If you sell seasoning salts in your store, sprinkle your favorite over
the almonds so you can introduce your customers to another product; you can also use kosher salt. Smoke until the almonds are golden brown, about 30 more minutes.
Once a beginning cook has success with a few easy smoker recipes, most are eager to learn more and move on to more challenging dishes. By carrying a variety of smoker cookbooks and demonstrating some simple recipes, you can appeal to more people of all culinary levels and expand your customer base.
Smoky Snack Mix Recipe
Feel free to customize this smokercooked mix with your favorite nuts, crackers, chips, and cereal. Recipe from 101 Things to Do With a Smoker by Eliza Cross; used with permission by Gibbs Smith.
1 cup butter, melted
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/4 teaspoons seasoned salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 cups Corn Chex cereal
2 cups Wheat Chex cereal
1 1/2 cups potato sticks
1 1/2 cups Bugles corn snacks, broken in half
1 cup rye chips
1 cup honey mustard pretzel chunks
1 cup cheese baby Goldfish crackers
1 cup shelled roasted pistachios
Preheat the smoker and add wood following the manufacturer’s instructions. Heat to 275 degrees F. Combine the butter, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until all pieces are coated. Spoon onto two rimmed cookie sheets and cook in the smoker for 1 hour and 20 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before serving. 12 servings.

HPC Fire Inspired Updates
Design with Tailored, Timely Solutions
With the increasing popularity of gas fire pits, there’s a growing demand for tailored solutions that reflect individual style and preferences. HPC Fire Inspired partners with consumers to customize its signature fire designs to elevate style with safety and durability.
“It is perfect for any residential or commercial setting,” says Sean Steimle, CEO. “Let HPC’s innovation and technology bring your backyard dreams into reality. Achieving custom-engineered designs requires proper planning, technical knowledge, and expertise. HPC truly partners with our dealers and consumers to ensure a seamless process from the designing stages to the installation.”
In a strategic move to keep up with the demand for custom designs, HPC introduced its Custom Design Configurator. Soon, consumers will be able to visit HPC’s webpage, selecting design specs through HPC’s Custom Configurator.
In turn, customers will receive an immediate quote for their desired design. “Our team is currently beta testing the configurator, ensuring that it will be ready to launch in 2024,” Steimle says. “This will allow consumers immediate access to quoting information,
expediting service delivery. Offering fast quotes can give your business a competitive edge.”
HPC is also expanding custom-engineered designs, while putting safety and functionality at the forefront. “HPC has worked closely with CSA to achieve certification on custom engineered-to-order designs,” Steimle says. “Currently, each piece tooled by HPC is not only tested internally but is also tested by CSA to confirm its safety and functionality.”
The engineered-to-order designs are curated maintaining American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and CSA standards. HPC also follows internal processes to ensure each unit has been tooled and assembled properly, allowing the design to function optimally. In terms of assembly, HPC and CSA developed an equation to deter-
mine proper placement of ports, as well as to verify maximum BTUs when using natural gas or propane gas on match-lit, electronic ignition, and FPPK push button units.
“Dealers, builders, and designers can leverage HPC educational resources online with smart apps and live training,” Steimle says. “By doing this, they can effectively promote the benefits of HPC custom fire pits and emphasize their value in enhancing outdoor living spaces.”
Fire Magic Elevates Performance and Aesthetics of its Luxury Grills
Fire Magic’s Echelon luxury line now features a touchscreen, digital thermometer, and sleek black glass.
The Echelon luxury line of Fire Magic outdoor gas grills and accessories, manufactured by RH Peterson Co., now features an innovative touchscreen and digital thermometer, while modernizing its stately look with elegant black glass. Handcrafted in the U.S., the updated performance and aesthetics of the premier Echelon grill line provides exceptional design
options for architects, designers, and builders that enhance the outdoor cooking experience for highend homeowners.
The addition of a high-performance digital thermometer and touchscreen complements other high-end features found in the Echelon Collection, such as hot surface ignition for push-button lighting, redesigned flavor grids to minimize
flare-ups and maximize cooking results, patented diamond sear cooking grids to transfer heat and cook food more evenly, and an optional Magic View window that allows outdoor chefs to monitor the cooking process without opening the grill.
RH Peterson is also elevating the look of its Echelon line with an elegant black glass accent. By applying the black glass look across the line of Echelon outdoor kitchen products, including complementary outdoor-cooking accessories such as the Power Burner and side cookers, RH Peterson enables designers to create a stylish, integrated look throughout the outdoor kitchen.
With the addition of sophisticated black glass, Fire Magic immediately updates the appearance of the Echelon line. Black glass also tastefully brings out the subtle blue of its backlit knobs. This black-glass accent is beautiful as well as functional, engineered to be extremely durable, easy to clean, and it makes the backlit controls easy to see in well-lit and dark conditions.
“We are constantly evolving and improving our grills to meet the changing tastes of our customers,” says Jerry Scott, senior vice president of sales at RH Peterson. “As demand for luxury outdoor kitchens continues to surge, discerning homeowners and the designers, architects, and builders they work with are seeking appliances with the performance, functionality, durability, and style that only Fire Magic delivers.”
The Fire Magic line is available from select dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as in some international markets.

New Products, New Momentum at Spartherm
Dealers who purchased the 600 and 700 range of stoves from Germany-based Spartherm can now buy the 800 EPA-certified range of stoves.
“We are proud to launch the 800 Large EPA range that completes our range,” says Markus Aumann, export manager. “The 600 and 700 range was launched in 2019 and has been very successful.”
The natural clean combustion dynamic of the 800 range creates a clean fire view, with modern straight lines and a large fire glass, giving an unhindered view of the fire. The 800 is a larger unit with
the ability to heat larger areas. According to Aumann, the 800 inserts will interest the U.S. market because Americans tend to have larger masonry fireplaces and often request larger inserts.

Windward Opens Manufacturing Facility in Pennsylvania
With the task of a facility move on the horizon, the leadership team at Windward, consisting of Chief Marketing Officer
Rachel Peace, Chief Operations Officer Chad Desmett, Chief Financial Officer Ashley Desmett, and Chief Human Resources Officer Mindy Desmett, accompanied by President and Founder David Peace, decided it was time to think beyond Florida’s sunny shores. With steady growth in the Midwest and Northeast, coupled with the fact they were already set to move out of their current facility in late 2024, the timing was optimal to expand the company’s physical footprint northward.
After extensive research into the implications of maintaining facilities in both Florida and a northern location, it became clear that a dual-location strategy was optimal. With operational expenses rising sharply in Southwest Florida coupled with the struggle to find quality labor, a smaller footprint in the state made sense. Moreover, opening an additional facility in an area with significantly lower costs and an abundant manufacturing labor pool represented the smartest strategic move for Windward.
“Windward is incredibly excited to embark on this next chapter of growth and expansion, which will help us better serve all customers through increased efficiencies, reduced costs internally and externally, and improved facilities in both regions, to name a few,” Rachel Peace says. “Our excitement of this next chapter is pouring over into our employees as well, and it is fantastic to see their enthusiasm. Some of our long-tenured team members have even agreed to relocate northward to assist with the new facility’s launch. We are grateful for the opportunities that 2024 and beyond will bring as we continue strengthening Windward. We are truly so blessed.”

areas that require 19,000-52,000 BTU/per hour. The door size of the range is 24 3/16 inches (height) by 30 13/16 inches (width).
The Zero Clearance option on the 800 gives customers the ability to experience European design and clean contemporary features. “The installation of this fireplace is simple,” Aumann says, “and the result will be spectacular.”
Another new product is the Varia B120, which Aumann believes may be the largest factory-built fireplace on the market for North America, with a door height of 27.5 inches and a width of 47.25 inches.
“The market has been asking for this type of ‘dynamic’ fireplace and the unit has been built for a North American market,” Aumann says. “It has the option of burning with a closed lift door system or with the door open using a mesh fire screen. It was important to keep the European design, quality, and safety while integrating requirements from the North American market.”
The mesh door system is designed to work and function in the same way as Spartherm’s familiar glass door lift. Aumann says this fireplace “will fill a void because it is almost a custom-built unit that has been certified for the market.”

HPC Fire Inspired: Why CSA Matters
OFFICIALS AT HPC FIRE INSPIRED
(MIAMISBURG, OHIO) strongly believe that certification from the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) matters. More importantly, prospective customers agree and they are looking for CSA certification to ensure quality.
“The main reason CSA certification remains important is that it gives our customers the confidence that our products are safe and reliable,” says Sean Steimle, CEO of HPC Fire Inspired. “CSA certification and testing covers a wide range of functions focused on construction and performance. Each test, ensures that every fire component from the electrical equipment, wiring, thermostats, gas, pressure regulators, pressure levels to the burners are functioning at optimal level guaranteeing the performance of every design.”
The CSA certification label verifies that the product, process, and service have been tested according to Canadian or U.S. standards. As a third-party testing agency with significant experience in gas appliances, CSA tests and certifies the complete outdoor appliance which includes the controls, burners, gas valve train, ignition system, pilot assembly and pan—all the way to the ANSI standard Z21.97.
Certification of the complete appliance is important to residential and commercial
builders, mainly because it ensures that the complete assembly has been tested by a third-party to ensure that stringent guidelines of the ANSI standard Z21.97 have been met.
“This standard is critical for building inspecting officials,” Steimle explains. “The full assembly CSA certified appliance is important, because it increases the reliability of the entire fire feature appliance and mitigates safety risk for unchecked/uncertified individually assembled components in the field.”
CSA certification starts with the new product development process. New concepts are vetted at an HPC testing facility, and also go through CSA’s third-party testing. CSA will review drawings, combustion analysis, wind test, rain test, and heat test. In addition, CSA will review each individual component to ensure the product meets its standards and listings.
According to Steimle, HPC and CSA jointly perform required quarterly audits throughout production. These quarterly audits are an opportunity for CSA to review manufacturing and quality systems. Steimle adds: “They closely monitor our final appliance testing before it leaves HPC’s facility. This adds a layer of oversite and quality. HPC promises that our fire features will light every time, and we back this up with the longest warranty in the industry— including a lifetime guarantee on pans and burners.”
The process is meticulous, but the final results are reflected in the enthusiastic reviews of HPC consumers. Streamlined set-up only enhances the experience. “HPC’s
CSA-certified appliances allow for easy plugand-play out-of-the-box start up,” Steimle enthuses. “It’s as easy as setting the appliance in the opening and making the gas connection with the HPC supplied gas connector. Lastly, with electronic ignition at 120V, it is as simple as plugging it into an outlet. Other manufacturers require some assembly which potentially introduces safety variables.”
Features such as match-lit, push-button technology—in addition to new SmartArc Electronic Ignition and Bluetooth—are also benefitting consumers. These technology options are also CSA certified as a complete appliance. Each technology comes with options to operate in different requirements, with match-lit being the entry level fire feature and the Bluetooth smart app serving as the most advanced option.
HPC is the only CSA certified outdoor fireplace system to mount underneath a chimney, which makes it a true vented fireplace. It’s one of many reasons that HPC has managed to continue its considerable momentum in a competitive environment.
Residential consumers may not know about the true value of CSA certification. HPC invests in ensuring the quality every design. Maintaining CSA certification increases the performance and safety of every design. HPC would like to educate buyers, as not all manufacturers take the time and effort to achieve CSA certification standards.
“There has been an increase in outdoor gas fire feature manufacturers and it is clear that not all share the values for quality and safety. Steimle encourages consumers to do their homework. “To protect users from financial and safety risks, HPC believes that certified products are the best investment. HPC encourages all dealers to sell outdoor gas fire features that are CSA certified products that are manufactured, tested, and certified to the CSA standard. HPC Fire Inspired has more than 400+ products with complete appliance CSA certification. Partnering with HPC will guarantee you a product that is both aesthetically pleasing to the eye while remaining safe and reliable withstanding the test of time.”

Change Of Hearth?
With so many design options and technical features available, retailers help simplify fireplace shopping for their customers.
WARMING UP THE ROOM IS ONLY HALF
THE BATTLE. Consumers want a style statement and a focal point where friends and family will gather. Whether it’s an upgrade or a new build, the search usually begins online, so it’s not enough to cultivate an attractive showroom.
“We’ve seen many dealers with beautiful showrooms, but their websites are dated or underdeveloped,” says Sean Coffey, marketing manager at Regency Fireplace Products. “A dealer’s website must look and feel like an extension of the showroom.”
Once dealers upgrade their online presence and organize the showroom, will they be able to get enough inventory? “The past few years have been bumpy as we navigated many of the supply challenges that came because of the pandemic,” says Michael Lewis, chief marketing officer at Astria. “We continued to develop new products during this time, but focused on mitigating supply and manufacturing pressures.”
With the stay-at-home spike largely gone, the result industrywide has been steady and predictable growth. Gary

business development manager at Camina & Schmid Inc., believes that trend will continue. “While every industry is coming off of a three-year high fueled by pandemic period stay-at-home spending,” he says, “we believe the 2024 market will not look much different from 2023.”
“I am confident that the fireplace industry will see growth in 2024, although I believe it will be modest,” adds Holly Markham, president and founder at European Home. “There is still significant spending, and fireplaces, unlike other building materials, provide a feeling. Renovation cutbacks will affect the house’s footprint, the number of windows, or landscaping for example, but I don’t think people are willing to give up a focal point and a family gathering area.”
With new looks, new technology, and traditional themes, the dozen companies in this issue’s spotlight offer a diverse array of designs to capture sales in the new year.
BRITISH FIRES
The New Forest 63-inch Electric Fireplace from British Fires Ltd. (Christchurch, U.K.) is the company’s top seller these days, but the New Forest 48inch is also a contender. Michael Athay, group managing director, attributes the popularity to the realism of the New Forest flame effect.
“Realism is the main point for customers when considering the purchase of an electric fire,” he says. “We appreciate that the flames are not real when compared to gas and wood fireplaces, but the New Forest Electric fire is the next best option using our latest LED flame technology and incorporating the patented Air Curtain Technology design.”
Seeing the flame technology up close goes a long way toward closing the deal, so an attractive showroom installation is crucial. “Our realistic-looking fireplaces set us apart when you see them in person,” Athay says. “The quality of the display is vital and the attention to detail can really shine through in the showrooms, giving dealers the platform to take their showrooms to the next level.”
As the name suggests, the U.K.-based company seeks to bolster its overseas look and feel. Athay explains: “Our logs are based on those found in the New Forest Park in England. The flame effect we designed rivals a real fire, and our fuel bed is deeper than most electric fireplaces, which maximizes the viewing area in the fire.”
The Air Curtain Technology heater system is thermostatically controlled with wide dispersion from the fire to effectively heat the room. The temperature can be set between 63° and 81°F using a remote.

CAMINA & SCHMID
Camina & Schmid Inc. (Bissendorf, Germany) recently gained certification on its 60-inch linear fireplaces, and company officials anticipate certification on their 30inch and 36-inch traditional fireplaces later in 2023. “In 2024, we are excited to bring our flame-out-of-log technology to a 42-inch traditional that we are expecting to land in the U.S. for burn season next year,” says Gary Lindberg, U.S. business development manager.
The flame-out-of-log technology has existed since 2017 in Europe, and Lindberg believes the realistic looking flame—coupled with double-glass, screen barrier, and cooling fan-free technology—will resonate with American consumers. The technology features ease of installation with simple-to-remove glass and ready access to the Mertik-Maxitrol split flow valve.
According to Lindberg, Camina & Schmid Inc. serves the top end of the market, and “our best advice to dealers is to explore the space outside of their showrooms. Builders, architects, and designers are all clamoring for something new. For dealers who partner with Camina & Schmid Inc., getting in front of those specifiers and influencers is critically important.”
New warehouse space in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will support Camina & Schmid’s distribution network and help dealers to efficiently receive the top end products in a timely manner. “For the dealers and end users, it will feel exactly like working with an American company, complete with all of the conveniences of product, warranty replacement parts, spares, and service from America,” Lindberg says. “Also, in November of 2023, Camina & Schmid hired Cyril Bongaerts, R&D manager, focusing squarely on the improvement and development of our fireplace product line for America.”
ICC INDUSTRIAL CHIMNEY
Officials at ICC Industrial Chimney Co. (St. Jerome, Quebec) believe their role is to support dealers as much as to supply them. To help dealers succeed, they have specific recommendations to increase and improve fireplace sales.
“One of the most important things is getting to know local designers and architects,” says Don Bonar, vice president, residential. “Fireplaces are largely for new construction and architects rely on local expertise when planning projects. Becoming an indispensable fireplace expert will open all sorts of potential jobs. By the time a designer has chosen a specific product, it can be difficult to change. The trick is to influence decisions in advance—not in a deceptive way, but toward the trusted products the dealer carries.”
ICC builds trust with dealers through a commitment to continuing in the wood-heating segment. Keeping up with changing standards to develop and certify EPA wood-burning heaters is a process that Bonar contends is “not something many manufacturers
are doing right now.”
The best-selling fireplace in the ICC family is the Opel, mostly because people love the way it heats. “It’s generated an almost cult following among customers to the point where people walk into RSF retailers and ask for it by name,” Bonar says. “They’ve witnessed its performance at their cousin’s or their brother’s home and were impressed. Testimonials from happy customers are still the best sales tool we can hope for. That’s the kind of referral we love.”
The Opel is successful, but designers have not been afraid to make changes since its introduction in the 1990s. The most recent version is catalytic, and Bonar boasts, “It’s currently the cleanest burning fireplace on the EPA Woodstove Database at just 0.7g/hr. It’s a big, efficient, clean burning unit that ticks all the boxes.”
ASTRIA
Early this year, Astria (Russellville, Alabama) launched a 48-inch linear fireplace that rounded out the company’s venerable Allume series. The Allume series now comes
in four sizes ranging from 48 inches to 84 inches and offers a selection of popular features.
“Our vision from the beginning was to offer a selection of contemporary linear fireplaces that install into standard stick framing,” says Michael Lewis, CMO. “There are a number of custom options available in the market, but they come with installation nuances and special considerations that often drive up cost and make them less accessible to some customers.”
Lewis believes that focusing on installation, in addition to products, is a prime differentiator. “Astria wood and gas fireplaces stand out because of our focus on common framing across different tiers of product,” he explains. “We have put as much consideration into the installation experience as we do into the aesthetics and features.”
The strategy has worked, with consistent interest remaining for Astria’s premium wood fireplaces such as the Georgian with Mosaic Masonry Panels. “The Georgian is a large traditional wood-burning fireplace that is offered with real firebrick interiors

that exude strength and permanence,” Lewis says. “I attribute the success of this product group to a change in what we need from our homes. Three years ago, we were all forced to look at our homes differently as we sheltered in place.”
“I have always felt strongly that sitting with family by a fireplace evokes a nostalgic response that calls back to simpler times,” Lewis says. “Many fond mem-
ories have been built in front of fireplaces. It makes sense to me that there would be a resurgence of interest in recapturing those memories with a grand fireplace that lives up to them.”
DIMPLEX
Dimplex (Cambridge, Ontario) launched the Optimyst Linear fireplace earlier this year, showcasing the company’s patented vapor flame technology. “Our newest Optimyst is the closest you can get to real flame without fire,” says Angela Hunt, product category manager. “It is a true 3D flame effect created with water vapor and lights.”
The new linear format provides a pre-boxed option
to Optimyst cassettes, which are entirely for custom builds. “In addition to amazing customization options, Optimyst Linear features our Comfort$aver heating system, exclusive to Dimplex, which sips electricity to maintain a stable room temperature,” Hunt says. “There is no other fireplace brand or manufacturer in the market with this feature. This premium fireplace is really the ultimate replacement for gas and wood. It’s the next generation of fireplaces.”
Dealers who properly show all the options are capitalizing on consumer preferences and sparking interest in products that may have been unknown to consumers.
“By offering a full lineup of fireplace options that include vapor and electric, dealers have solutions to suit any customer,” says Gord Carter, vice president of marketing. “This kind of choice is essential for increasing business. With state regulations coming in, changes in buying habits and behaviors, and a growing shift to more sustainable fireplace options—there is no better time than now to invest in a broader range. Optimyst vapor fireplaces are a smart way to protect the profits that would be made selling gas.”
Carter counts himself as “extremely optimistic” about what the next year holds. “We’re launching several new products in 2024,” he says. “These products are designed for growth opportunities; we already know there’s strong support for the upside of vapor technology and our patented Optimyst lineup. Those dealers who are willing to stay current with trends and take advantage of innovative solutions will be the ones who win.”
HEARTH & HOME TECHNOLOGIES
For Hearth & Home Technologies (Lakeville, Minnesota), 2023 has been one of the largest product launch years ever. Notable intros included a redesigned Heat & Glo flagship product—the new 6K/8K series. With the redesign, the best-selling mid-range traditional fireplace got a 25% increase to the viewing area, all within the same framing dimensions.
“Our new on-trend interiors, fronts, and heat management capabilities, along with the most up-to-date technology like Wi-Fi, deliver the products consumers desire most,” says Randy Wendolek, marketing director, brand and category, fireplace business unit. “For our dealers, it’s also important to have a full line of mantels and surrounds to accentuate the fireplace, so we launched a new selection of those as well.”
Heat & Glo produced a new premium linear fireplace called the Primo II. Like other product debuts, the fireplace includes the latest technology and heat management capabilities, providing what Wendolek calls “best-in-class design for architects and designers wanting to make a bold statement in their home designs.” The product offers a luxury feel with SafeSurface glass to ensure a beautiful, clear, and safe view with no screen.
Additional new offerings such as the Heatilator Caliber and Majestic Meridian units were designed for “move-up homes” with new front options, heat management capabilities, and Wi-Fi control.

“Another new and impressive product we launched in 2023 is the SimpliFire Inception,” Wendolek says. “The Inception has the most true-to-life flame in a traditional electric fireplace due to our exclusive Digital Spark technology. Our non-structural solutions for installing this model, as well as our Allusion Platinum product, have made it very easy for consumers and builders alike to add them at any point in the decision-making journey.”
EMPIRE GROUP
Empire Group Inc. (Belleville, Illinois) sparked excitement this year with the launch of its new open face wood-burning fireplaces in sizes 36, 44, and 54. The
large open face wood boxes are ideal for the custom home market. Meanwhile, the best-selling fireplace remains the Rushmore/Renegade series, which includes patented TruFlame technology.
Nick Bauer, president, describes TruFlame as the most realistic fire in the industry. Whether it’s online or in-person, Bauer urges dealers to make it easy for consumers to scrutinize the flames.
“Consumers do more online research now than ever before,” he says. “Having an easy-to-navigate website is more crucial than ever with the ultimate goal of getting customers in the door. In terms of showroom displays, we have seen the most success when dealers display units fully featured. It is always easier to sell
down rather than up when trying to close the sale.”
In addition to product launches, the Empire Group purchased Montigo Fireplaces of Langly, Canada, in July. It’s only been about 90 days since the close of the sale, and Bauer anticipates promoting Montigo as part of Empire Group at HPBA in Nashville next year.
It’s a lot of new items, but Bauer contends that products are not enough to justify a dealer’s business. “We have always focused on being easy to do business with,” Bauer says. “That includes how we approach customer service and dealer support. We want to help our customers provide an excellent experience to their customer in the easiest possible way.”
VALOR FIREPLACES
Designers at Valor Fireplaces (North Vancouver, BC) recently introduced the LT1 tall linear radiant gas fireplace, in addition to electric fireplaces such as the Valor GE3 Insert electric fireplace by Charlton and Jenrick. The electric offerings are distributed by Valor throughout Canada and the United States.
Another tall linear is in the pipeline, similar to the LT2 tall linear gas fireplace (same length) but taller. Several upgrades to some classic products are also in the works, specifically an upgrade to Valor’s Portrait Series, a smaller insert fireplace, and a bigger (more BTUs) gas stove.
The G3 insert gas fireplace has resonated with homeowners looking for home improvements. “Being able to keep your existing fireplace, but upgrade to an easier-to-use-and-maintain gas fireplace, is an efficient and cost-effective choice,” says Berit Hansen, marketing specialist. “However, many homeowners are also renovating and want a large square gas fireplace, like the H5 or H6, or a linear fireplace. Linear fireplaces continue to be popular among folks who are renovating their home.”
Dealers who work with Valor Fireplaces order new products directly from Valor’s inside sales team. If dealers have questions, experts on the technical support team are available for problem solving.
“We provide dealers with customizable marketing for social media, just a couple of clicks away,” Hansen says. “Dealers can order brochures, POP, and promotional materials online to help them on the floor and with customers. We offer incentives to upgrade dated fireplaces or add new ones to a dealer’s repertoire. We always welcome dealer feedback, much of which is implemented.”

calls it the perfect size for almost any application—residential or commercial.
Currently available in three configurations, the City Series 50 has a one-sided linear (New York View) or three-sided Bay (San Francisco Bay) that can be converted into a left or right two-sided corner fireplace. The City Series features a refined flame picture and Regency’s patented Cool Wall system to allow use of any finishing material direct to the edge of the firebox.
Regency’s new Atmosphere Collection of electric inserts features an optional insert or fireplace installation, plus two heat output options, mix-and-match accessories, and a realistic flame picture with a Chromalight LED lighting system.
“Orange and red flames are combined with 13 fuel bed lighting options and top-down lighting to create a realistic and stunning flame picture,” Coffey explains. “Adjust the flame and fuel bed separately with fivestep brightness controls. The view of the fire is further enhanced with an artfully crafted, raised, and layered log set sitting upon a grate, charcoal logs, embers, and ginger crystals to provide depth and realism.”
Yet another electric option is the Onyx Range of premium electric fireplace heaters. “It comes complete with a robust log set, integrated log lighting, and advanced Chromalight Plus LED system,” Coffey says. “It has full color customization, Wi-Fi control, and a generous 17-inch glass height. It means this fireplace is sure to amaze with its aweinspiring flame picture.”
ORTAL NORTH AMERICA
Ortal North America (Columbus, Ohio) debuted Wilderness Gas Inserts in 2023, specifically designed for individuals aiming to transform classic masonry fireplaces into upscale, direct-vent gas models. “We’ve debuted with two sought-after sizes—34 and 29 inches—accompanied by a broad range of customization choices, including surrounds, media, panels, and more,” says Gina Almaguer, director of marketing. “In a pioneering move, we’ve also incorporated dual flame controls, enabling homeowners to individually adjust the flame intensity through the log and on the ember bed.”
All of Ortal’s units use passive cool wall technology, allowing for combustible materials to be placed up to the edge of the glass. “It also offers the flexibility to position a TV or artwork just 4 inches above without needing a blower or fan,” Almaguer says. “Ortal offers a selection of more than 300 standard models, including our realistic Wilderness technology or our signature natural flame on our Evolve models. Plus, we cater to bespoke needs with custom-designed pieces.”
It amounts to a feast for the eyes, and Almaguer notes that it’s all about the experience when closing the sale. “Dealers who showcase live displays tend to achieve the most success, as both homeowners and design experts prefer a tactile approach when selecting fireplaces. Experiencing the authenticity and beauty of an Ortal fireplace in-person, be it at a local dealer showroom or our design center, is unparalleled.”
Many Ortal dealers showcase three or more units, and Ortal’s display program incentivizes this practice.
“Building and nurturing relationships with local design professionals, including architects, builders, and designers, is another strategy,” Almaguer adds. “This positions dealers as trusted local resources, and at Ortal, we have a dedicated architect and design team fostering these connections with our dealer network.”
EUROPEAN HOME
In 2023, European Home (Middleton, Massachusetts) launched the Domofocus suspended fireplace. According to Holly Markham, president and founder, the Domofocus is a new (and smaller) cousin of the iconic Gyrofocus—the suspended rotating fireplace by Focus. Similar to its larger counterpart, the Domofocus features the same clean, modern design and a hearth that rotates 360 degrees.
“The Domofocus’ smaller size boasts a larger hearth opening, 9.25 inches high to the Gyrofocus’ 8 inches, for a better view of the hypnotic allure of a wood-burning fire,” Markham explains. “This model is also available in an indoor as well as outdoor version. The indoor version offers a selection of either a black or white finish while the outdoor is available in black or hematite rust. The shape and versatility makes it an efficient source of heat but also a showpiece and work of art.”
In early 2024, Markham plans to continue momentum by launching the Ergofocus Gas suspended fireplace. “When Focus launched the Gyrofocus Gas in 2022, it was a patented global innovation,” she says. “Today, Focus has repeated this astonishing accomplishment with the Ergofocus Gas. They have achieved a real technological milestone by allowing gas to flow through a plate in the ceiling and then down through an insulated conduit into the fireplace, while still allowing the hearth to swivel 100 degrees.”
The new Ergofocus Gas uses a remote control that instantly lights the fire, while the flame’s intensity is fully adjustable. The flames dance rhythmically in the heart of the realistic ceramic log hearth.
“Thanks to its ease of use, this decorative appliance can be specified in homes as well as commercial projects, including reception areas of large hotels, corporate offices, luxury condo common
areas, and restaurants. It can be installed above any surface, including wood floors, without the need for a protective plate underneath.”
NAPOLEON
The drawing board has seen a flourish of activity at Napoleon (Barrie, Ontario), and Garry Scott, vice president of marketing, is confident that work will pay off in 2024. According to Scott, the first example is, “Our new Luminex LCD Built-in Electric Fireplace that provides superior realism and a truly unique and immersive fire experience.”
As Napoleon builds out its electric line, it will also add the Elevation Built-in Electric Fireplace, which will allow for a true “choose your fuel” option and feature the same framing as the Elevation Gas series.
“A full firebox of flames and unrivaled design options will make it easy for homeowners to enjoy the benefits of a stylish fireplace, regardless of fuel type desires or fossil fuel limitations,” Scott says.
“Meanwhile, our Entice Wall Hanging Electric Fireplace continues to be a best-seller for specialty retail as well as builders. This past year, it received a facelift with new flame and color options. Together, these changes make it a standout in its class.”
With so much change and innovation happening in the hearth category, Scott believes specialty retailers can play a key role in showcasing what’s new. Innovation with new electrics, flame enhancement and reduced energy consumption are just a few areas of change. “Through education, consumer aspirations grow and trade-up scenarios play out,” he says.
“The demand for Napoleon innovation is attracting customers. We are also seeing inventory levels in the trade return to normal following a rebalancing of supply chains following COVID.”
In the Spring of 2023, Napoleon expanded its US Distribution center to better serve customers. On the digital side, the Napoleon.com website expanded options to make it easier for dealers to specify products and for consumers to learn about options. The online Fireplace Design Studio, for example, allows consumers to use a VR tool on a phone to visualize a fireplace in any room of the home.

A love for the industry combined with an emphasis on quality control leads to success for this Canadian retailer.

S“Today, our business is primarily 90% fireplaces, although we still sell a variety of heating and cooling products,” Shawn says. A textile engineer and certified in quality control, he
hawn Amiri, founder and owner of The Fireplace Club (Thornhill, Ontario), has always loved fireplaces. In fact, when he started his company 13 years ago, he was primarily an HVAC dealer selling a small offering of fireplaces. However, sparked by strong customer demand and his own enthusiasm for the industry, hearths quickly took center stage.

The Fireplace Club serves the greater Toronto area and offers residents a wide variety of hearth products to meet any customer’s desire or need. This includes gas, electric, and wood models in a range of modern, traditional, and transitional styles. The store partners with a range of topflight fireplace manufacturers such as Amantii, Dimplex, Heat & Glo, Majestic, Montigo, Napoleon, Regency, Valor, and Vermont Castings. DaVinci Custom Fireplaces
is an exciting recent addition to the line-up. In the outdoor living category, the store offers gas, wood, and electric fireplaces along with heaters. “We have over 35 brands for different tastes. Whatever a customer wants, we have it here.”
The HVAC category includes Carrier furnaces and air conditioners, water heaters, boilers, heat pumps, central air conditioners, and ductless systems. In addition, an indoor air quality category offers air purifiers, central humidifiers, media air cleaners, UV lights, and heat recovery ventilation systems.
BOTTOM:
Although there is an increase in the installation of electric models in condos and townhomes, gas fireplaces are the biggest sellers by far due to the weather in Canada, Shawn notes. The business does a combination of remodels and new construction. “We work with a lot of designers, architects, and builders as well as homeowners who are often converting their fireplaces from wood to gas. People truly enjoy the heat and efficiency of gas over wood.”
The sales staff works with its customers on design and selection to create the new fireplace of their dreams. All installations and service are performed by The Fireplace Club’s licensed crew of top-notch installers and technicians.
STUNNING SHOWROOM
The 3,000-square-foot showroom is one of the largest fireplace stores in the region and features approximately 35 burning displays. This allows buyers to shop brands and models side by side, giving them the opportunity to compare technology, quality, and operation.
“In my opinion, we have one of the most beautiful showrooms in the greater Toronto area,” Shawn says. The store’s excellent reputation for offering quality products as well as reliability brings cus-

tomers through the doors. In fact, Shawn spends very little money on advertising and dropped about 80% of his marketing efforts some time ago. “We still advertise in a few magazines and online, and we are active on social media.”
The majority of customers, about 75%, come from referrals or are repeat business. Shawn likes to say that word-of-mouth advertising is “his chief” in business. Sticking to this philosophy has given The Fireplace Club a very good reputation in the market. He notes that when consumers walk through his showroom doors today, they are very sophisticated and savvy and come in armed with knowledge.
“People do their research and know what they want. I always tell my sales crew that our customers are better educated on products than we are since we need to know many different products compared to consumers who focus on one or two.”
STELLAR SERVICE
The store’s sales philosophy is one in which the staff should not expect anything from customers but instead provide the best service by educating them
on all their options. This then gives people the knowledge and power to select the best fireplace for them. “And because of this approach, customers usually end up buying from us,” Shawn says. Overall, he notes what sets The Fireplace Club apart from the competition is above and beyond customer service, a variety of products, and a multitude of burning displays in the showroom.
The Fireplace Club’s customer service philosophy has resulted in numerous positive online reviews. In 2023, the store received several awards, including the prestigious Consumer Choice Award, which recognizes excellence in small- and medium-sized businesses in North America. The dealer is also the 2022 HomeStars Best of Award Winner. This honors professionals who demonstrate consistency, integrity, and unparalleled customer service and also honors businesses that produce high-quality work and always put their customers first.
“These awards mean a lot to us and are recognition that people appreciate what we do,” Shawn says. “It not only
feels good but sets us apart from our competitors and gives us more energy to continue to work hard.”
Shawn says his background in quality control truly sets the tone for his success in the hearth industry. Good quality control verifies whether a product or service meets certain industry, legal, and regulatory standards—with the main objective to achieve maximum customer satisfaction. “I learned this philosophy early on in my quality control work that in everything we did, the customer is the key and is always right. Therefore, we do our best to keep our customers happy and satisfied and, in the end, this all goes back to keeping our good reputation and name.”
The Fireplace Club remained open during the pandemic as an essential business supplying HVAC products. Sales were good, Shawn notes, as people stayed home and focused on making improvements to their homes. “The Canadian government also paid people COVID-19 benefits, so people had money to spend.” Supply chain issues were tough, he adds, with wait times of
six to nine months. “There were months of setbacks, and some customers became quite frustrated. Thankfully, that is behind us now.”
Shawn continues to grow The Fireplace Club with a focus on building the custom segment by working with designers and architects. While business is good, he says there could be a concern for a slowdown in the future with high mortgage rates and rising inflation on the price of food and consumer goods.
“Prices are going up and while families may have money, fireplaces are still considered a luxury product. People may wait another year or two to see if prices come down and hold off on a remodel,” he says. Fortunately, The Fireplace Club has not experienced any negative economic effects yet.
Shawn says that wherever he goes, he wants to create a fire. He truly enjoys all aspects of any type of fire. “I am happy sitting around the heat, watching the flames, being with friends, and enjoying a drink together. Maybe this is why I got so involved with fireplaces. I just love what I do.”

Amere 30 minutes from Boston, you will find the charming town of Arlington, Massachusetts, where barbecue aficionados come to peruse the offerings at the Bar-B-Que Barn, a local gem that first made its appearance in the area in the early 1980s as an extension of Dudley Automotive Services, which offered propane tank refilling stations for area residents.
According to Mary Marino, co-owner at Bar-B-Que Barn, her grandfather, Samuel Nigro, began an ice and coal business in 1939 that migrated to home heating oil. He had built a three-bay garage across the street from the oil company, Dudley Fuel, to service his fleet of vehicles.
“My oldest brother Ed started fixing cars for friends and families when he wasn’t fixing oil trucks,” Marino says. Joining Ed in the shop were his brothers Dan and David, and Mary joined the siblings in the office. Dudley

Automotive Services Inc. was incorporated in 1979 as a full-service automotive repair shop.
“Propane grills started to grow in popularity in the greater Boston area in the early 1980s,” Marino says. “With a deep history in the fuel business, we brought in a propane tank and became a propane filling station in 1981.”
Along with the increase in gas grill use came inquiries about replacement parts for the grills the customers at Dudley Automotive Services were using.
“There was an old barn on the property that was used for storage. The property, at one time, was farmland of our great grandfather’s,” Marino says. “We cleaned out the barn and began doing business with MASDA Corporation in Boston, which sold a line of grill replacement parts made by HARPCO Manufacturing, and the Bar-B-Que Barn was born.”
The following year, the family brought in Ducane Gas Grills, followed by Weber and MHP a few years later. The Bar-B-Que Barn operated out of that original barn for 25 years, until its “leaning” structure
became more and more evident, resulting in the barn being removed in January 2012.
“We were blessed with an unseasonably warm winter to build the new barn and warehouse. Finding a contractor to build the plans that were developed by Matt Tripi of Tripi Engineering in the time frame we needed became impossible,” Marino says. “As many family businesses do, we took it on ourselves, subcontracting where needed and working together seven days a week.” The grand reopening was held in May 2012.
BROAD SELECTION
Fast forward 11 years and today, the Bar-B-Que Barn provides leading-edge grills and grill parts for over 30 different types of grills to the region.
“Barbecue restaurants became a thing in Massachusetts around 1987 and slowly evolved into a mainstream takeout option,” Marino says. “We were among the first retailers in Massachusetts to bring in the Big Green Egg to our store and I would say that was the biggest evolution in the grill industry since gas
grills became mainstream. The Big Green Egg allowed people to bring the takeout barbecue to their backyard. Flat-top griddles, pellet smokers, and pizza ovens are what is driving the industry now.”
Over the years, Weber grills have been the Bar-BQue Barn’s best-selling products. Marino also has recognized that customers from the greater Boston area are looking at aspects of grilling products that are different from those in many areas of the country.
“I would say the biggest difference is in size—the average lot/deck/patio in greater Boston is much smaller and the consumer does not want to take up all their space for a cooking appliance,” Marino says. “The customer we tend to see is looking for quality and longevity. They may have had their first grill last 15 years and they are expecting their second one to last as long. Our customers are also tuned into where products are made, and they are willing to pay a little more knowing that it is made in the USA or at least not made in China.”
In addition, as the company buyer, Marino pays attention to the product elements that their customers

are drawn to. For example, when looking for a replacement grill, Bar-B-Que Barn’s customers are sometimes influenced by the presence of a side burner.
“Their previous grill had a side burner and they ‘never used it.’ We have seen more interest in infrared side burners, since sous vide cooking has gained popularity. They like the fact they can sear it off without taking out the cast iron pan.”
FULL-SERVICE STORE
Another facet that has made Bar-B-Que Barn the “go to” grilling retailer in the greater Boston area is the company’s focus on being a full-service grill store. The team assembles and delivers most of the grills they sell.
As Marino explains, with over 40 years of experience, service has always been the core part of their business—whether they are troubleshooting a grill issue over the phone or servicing the item
in-house, they have the knowledge and expertise that no other company in the area can offer.
In addition, the store offers firsthand grilling experiences so customers can see a particular grill “at work.”
“When the new barn was built, an outdoor patio was created. The outdoor burn area is home to many in-use grills,” Marino says. “Customers can see an Egg cooking a Boston Butt, a pellet grill smoking four racks of ribs, a Gozney Dome cooking a pizza, or they can just see how to use it. Our staff is not only knowledgeable about the grills they sell, they also are amazing pitmasters.”
With such a long history, Bar-B-Que Barn has undoubtedly faced a myriad of challenges but luckily has come out on top through them all—including the recent pandemic, which proved to either make or break many businesses.
“Fortunately for us, people having to stay home and not go to restaurants helped our business greatly. I think that even after things opened back up, people remember how much fun they had just staying home and cooking on the grill,” says Marino, who also pays attention to industry trends so they can meet the interests of their consumers.
For instance, Bar-B-Que Barn has always sold natural gas grills, but the company has seen an increase in interest in natural gas as many people are putting money into their backyards. In addition, outdoor kitchens are not as popular in New England as they are in the warmer climates, but the Bar-B-Que Barn team recognizes that there is growing interest with the grill enthusiast to combine all their grilling equipment into one area.
“I think what is most exciting about our business now is that although the winter months are slower and we do not do any hearth, we are finally able to say that it is not a seasonal business,” Marino says. “Fall football through Thanksgiving are perfect times for smoking; Christmas is a great time to buy something for that hard-toshop-for person; and with early buy orders arriving in early spring, before you know it, it’s Memorial Day.”

A longtime patio shop embraces the easy, breezy outdoor lifestyle Floridians relish.
BY SHARON SANDERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE CONNOR
Living, working, and playing outdoors is the way of life in Florida. Patio.com (Boca Raton, Florida) has created a niche for itself in this abundant, yet competitive market by knowing who its customers are and what they need to create spaces they love. This past year, the forward-thinking retailer moved into a modern new location that is bringing a fresh perspective and a noticeable boost in sales.
Owned by Phil and Dave Ross, the popular chain of luxury specialty patio stores, headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, has been around for over 30 years—with humble beginnings starting in the backseat of a station wagon. Boca Raton is the newest of eight retail stores that includes locations in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and Virginia. Patio.com has gained a fiercely loyal following, thanks to its focus on high-end products and service.
In Florida, the store’s customer base is primarily snowbirds who travel in the winter months to escape the cold weather. Many of them already buy from Patio.com in the New England and Mid-Atlantic areas for their primary homes. “That familiarity gives us instant credibility. We tailor our product mix for the Florida lifestyle,” says Wina Burns, store manager. She opened the Boca Raton

location 13 years ago after over a decade with the company. “It has been wildly successful, yet the time was right to take the next step for a more modern image.”
The new Patio.com Boca Raton was unveiled in October 2023 just a mile from the original location. Situated on a busy road with visibility from the street, the storefront stands out with its
An experienced merchandiser, Burns has completely transformed the 3,600-square-foot showroom from top to bottom. “My goal is to stage an environment that inspires customers and caters to designers,” she explains, adding that the high ceilings are the feature she’s most excited about because it enables her to display tall merchandise indoors like the store’s popular Tucci umbrellas. “Tucci is a big seller for all the Patio.com locations, so I’m thrilled we can finally display them properly, instead of having to open them outside
The first thing shoppers see when they enter through the store’s 12-foot front doors are three Tucci Max cantilever umbrellas (8’x12’, 11’ octagon, 10’x10’ square) positioned over outdoor tables merchandised with colorful settings. “The umbrellas really capture your attention and set the stage for the overall showroom experience.”
The store’s exterior features bright yellow Adirondack chairs and two yellow/blue Tucci Manta umbrellas that reflect the Patio.com corporate color scheme. “The umbrellas have an unusual shape that causes people to take a second look when they drive by. Curious, they will often stop in to see them up close and then browse the showroom to see what else we have to offer.”
The Boca Raton store specializes in the Florida market, which has an aesthetic that is completely different than most of its customers’ traditional-style homes, which are typically brick and dark wood. “Here, it’s all about white, white, and more white,” Burns says, adding that over the past few years, contemporary Miami-style décor and architecture has gained in popularity. “Our job is to guide customers in the right direction to help them select décor with local flair, yet reflects their tastes and personality.”
The store features high-end brands that include Brown Jordan, Gloster, Barlow Tyrie, Kingsley Bate, and Telescope Casual, and offers everything needed to create playful, yet sophisticated outdoor

living areas perfect for relaxing.
Being on the coast, weather-resistant outdoor furniture is a must to withstand the salty air and year-round sun. The store’s top sellers include powder-coated aluminum, as well as teak furniture—which is a personal favorite of Burns. “We sell a tremendous amount of teak. People love it because it brings visual warmth and texture to the allwhite stucco look that is so prevalent. I personally have teak furniture at home that has aged to a beautiful gray.”
Customers are also drawn to Telescope Casual’s marine grade polymer products because it is impervious to the weather and cleans up easily. Sunbrella Rain fabric has become a recommended favorite for cushion furniture because it’s water repellent, instead of just water resistant. Rain has a waterproof coating under the fabric, so water sits on top of it instead of filtering into the cushions. “We suggest Rain for furniture that won’t be used under any type of covering. We are showing it on several furniture collections on the floor right now, and it’s getting a lot of interest.”
IT’S PERSONAL
Along with offering Florida-centric luxury brands, the personal service experience is what fuels the store’s loyal customer base. Burns has a passion for guiding homeowners through the furniture selection process. She explains that there are three ways to approach décor in an outdoor space: One, take the inside and move it out; two, create a completely different look; or three, mimic the design of
the exterior of the house. “It’s a starting point that gets design moving in the right direction,” she explains, adding that this approach helps take away the overwhelming feeling that many people get.
Next, she encourages customers to focus in on what furniture they will use the most in the space. “Dining is typically the most important to conquer first, then we can coordinate deep seating and build from there to pool or lounging areas.” The trend right now is curating a space with furniture that coordinates using mixed materials. “Gone are the days when everything matches with the same frame colors and fabrics. This way of decorating creates a luxury feel that is much like indoor interior design.”
Burns works with designers constantly and admits that finding the right products for the coastal experience can be tricky because the size and shape of the outdoor areas are not like a typical home. “Condos especially have plenty of length, but not a lot of width. So I offer a selection of different size tables for a smaller balcony size so people can take in the view of intracoastal waterways or the ocean.”
With the store open and operating in full swing, Burns has nothing but optimism for the future.
“It’s an exciting time for everyone right now—the
owners, the staff, and the customers. Since 2020, the specialty patio industry has seen many ups and downs from the panic of COVID shutdowns to riding the wave of renewed interest in outdoor living to the recent downturn in the economy. Phil and Dave have been the smart, flexible, resilient leaders of our company through it all. They are the heart and soul of all we do. They always support me in everything I want to accomplish, and we will continue to work together to determine the best way to move forward into 2024 and beyond.”

The Windward Design Group is well positioned to help retailers succeed in a competitive marketplace.
BY SHARON SANDERS
IN TODAY’S UNPREDICTABLE ECONOMY, FLEXIBILITY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME.
The Windward Design Group (Sarasota, Florida) is not only known industry wide for its customerdriven outdoor furniture designs, but moving forward, it has made it a priority to be the best and easiest manufacturer to work with on every front. Patio & Hearth Products Report met up with Rachel Peace, CIO, to get a glimpse behind the scenes of this forward-thinking company to see what its plans are for 2024 and beyond.
How has the Windward Design Group made a name for itself in the outdoor furniture industry?
Peace: Windward is a family-owned company that has been manufacturing products for the outdoor furniture industry for 33 years. We’ve made a name for ourselves by providing sound, quality, domestically sourced and crafted outdoor furniture delivered at a good lead time and sold at a good price point. We built our business specializing in aluminum furniture for the commercial/hospitality space and diversified into residential in the late 90s/early 2000s.
A little over 10 years ago, we saw potential in marine grade polymer outdoor furniture, so we decided to jump on board. It has become a huge success for our company and now makes up about 40% of our sales. Since our business started in the commercial/hospitality realm, all of our furniture (including residential) is commercial grade that’s made to last in any environment.
What has been your most notable company news recently?
Peace: The biggest thing for us is we have locked in an extremely strong management team. Having a like-minded team internally that shares the same vision, mission, and values of where we see the business going is so important. We all know our roles within that unified vision and mission, so we are all moving in the same direction, and our staff and customers can feel it.
Holistically, we are in a very homey, casual industry that is built on relationships—the more we can treat people as if they are our own family,
the better we are going to do. This perspective is the core of everything we do. It’s also important to mention that with our new management team, we’ve been able to create an abundance of efficiencies in production, which has enabled us to lessen our lead times and look into future decreases in pricing.
What Windward collections are longtime favorites among consumers?
Peace: The favorite for aluminum has been our Ocean Breeze Aluminum Sling Collection. It was one of the first collections that was created. It has been in our line since the 1990s, and it is still one of the most consistent products that we sell because of the quality, timeless style, and price point. It’s one of those collections (regardless of the territory you’re in) that you can have on your back patio for 15 years and it will last. It’s also a very versatile collection that appeals to the majority.
When it comes to marine grade polymer, the
Kingston Collection has been a consistent top seller. It has a simple and timeless style at a good price point—making it great value on a retailer’s floor. It’s another collection with a lot of versatility that covers all the bases from deep seating and dining to different heights (dining, balcony, and bar) and motion pieces. It’s perfect for people who want everything or just a few pieces. All of our products can be special ordered. Anyone can pick their own fabric and frame finish, and make it exactly how they want it to look.
What new Windward products are you most excited about for 2024?
Peace: Windward has taken a different approach for the upcoming season. We haven’t necessarily come out with any new product but are rather fine-tuning our current offerings. This decision revolves around our mission to hyperfocus on the details that matter most to the dealers and customers who have supported us for the past three decades. Based on their feedback, we came out with some enhancements such as adding a stylish swivel poly base for our polymer motion pieces.

Telescope Casual leader reflects on past achievements while looking ahead to the future.
BY KIMBERLY RODGERS
THE START OF A NEW YEAR IS A GOOD TIME TO LOOK BACK
ON THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
that happened in the previous one. Indeed, Telescope Casual (Granville, New York) and its chairman-CEO, Kathy Juckett, have many achievements to reflect on. At the 2023 International Casual Furnishings Association Annual Awards Gala, Juckett received the ICFA Lifetime Achievement Award. “There were so many feelings running through my mind at the moment, but my first thought was, ‘I’m not done yet,’” Juckett says. “It is an honor to be recognized and acknowledged by our peers in the industry.”
Another highlight of this year’s ICFA Casual Market: It was the first show held at the redesigned AmericasMart Atlanta, marking a move from Chicago. Nearly 50 casual furniture manufacturers, including Telescope Casual, opened permanent year-round showrooms in late 2022. “Our new showroom was a very exciting place to be at the July market,” Juckett says.
While Telescope Casual has had a presence at AmericasMart Atlanta for over 25 years, the new space is 25% larger than any other showroom the company has and is also located in a prime position, just off the second floor escalators. “Our space in Atlanta is perfectly designed to give the best possible furniture-focused presentation,” Juckett says.
Yet, despite its size, she adds, “Our showroom gives you the immediate feeling of home when you walk in the doors.” Juckett notes that Telescope takes the “Casual” part of its name very seriously and wants customers to experience and feel that mantra at its showroom. In addition to the ample and generous floor
area, attendees also enjoyed another new highlight of the space—a kitchen area filled with coffee, hot tea, breakfast and lunch items, and sweet treats.
“Moving the entire market from Chicago to Atlanta was no small feat. We were greatly impressed with the partnership of the ICFA and ANDMORE (formerly International Market Centers) for such a successful first July Casual Market,” Juckett says. “We are looking forward to future markets in Atlanta and exploring the new opportunities available to us there.”
PRODUCT INTRODUCTIONS
Along with a new space, several product introductions also created a lot of buzz and excitement in Atlanta, including Telescope Casual’s new Leeward Cushion Premier Swivel Rocker. Constructed with an extrawide marine grade polymer frame, the rocker features built-in side pillows for added comfort. “This makes it the perfect curl up with a book and blanket item, and it pairs perfectly with our fire tables,” Juckett says. In addition to its size, the Premier Swivel Rocker is designed with Telescope Casual’s ultra plush cushions and relaxing rocking motion. In addition to its ever-popular
marine grade polymer slatted table top collection, Telescope Casual has also introduced tables in a dash design top. This collection offers a more modern aesthetic and slots, which are completely open. “This makes it the perfect table top for maintenance-free homes or commercial applications,” Juckett says.
Telescope Casual has been proudly manufacturing products in the United States since its founding in 1903. The company not only manufactures in the U.S. but also sources over 98% of raw materials domestically. “It was not always easy to continue to be American-made and American-sourced prior to the pandemic,” Juckett says. “We did so because this is more in-line with our core family values; and as an American-made manufacturer, it is very important to also support other domestic businesses.”
As supply chain issues increased during and after the pandemic, sourcing and manufacturing product domestically became a necessity, says Juckett, adding that it has been a huge benefit to have American-made resources available. “Since COVID, we have seen a significant increase in interest in buying American-made brands. That said, style, price, and availability still remain

Spartherm’s quest for continuous innovation keeps it one step ahead of the competition.
BY MAURA KELLER
FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS, GERMANY-BASED SPARTHERM
has been making a name for itself within the hearth industry by manufacturing leading-edge fireplaces that boast unique and innovative designs with the highest grade of materials. Both contemporary in functionality and safety characteristics, Spartherm’s fireplaces have become a much sought-after accouterment by consumers across the globe—consumers who embraced the innovations of this family-based company that is leading the charge in the hearth industry in Europe.
Because of the company’s long-standing history, Spartherm understands the nuances facing the hearth industry today. According to Martin Bauer, head of export, in Spartherm’s opinion, the change of the EPA regulations in May 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic changed the industry. The EPA’s recent standards mandate that wood-burning fireplaces cannot produce more than 2.5 grams/hour of particulate matter, resulting in manufacturers creating clean-burning models.
“Most of the producers thought there would be a transition period of at least a year, but that was not true,” Bauer says. “Most of the North American producers were not prepared for the change.” However, Spartherm was prepared and started directly with the full EPA product range of the company’s 600 and 700 fireplace models.
“Furthermore, being from Europe, the design was a bit modern for the market in the beginning, but eventually well accepted,” Bauer says. “The big question for the future is, what will happen in and with the EPA after the next presidential election in 2024.”
“Will we still have EPA regulations with tax refunds, or are there no environmental regulations at
all? In addition, the EPA is not stating clearly which test method will be the one for the future. Will it be crip wood or the former crib wood test? We as a German-based company think it should be close to the burning material the customer is using—cordwood. As far as we know, it is confusing for the American market but is more irritating for European manufacturers. More and more producers are saying goodbye to the
hearth market, because of these uncertainties.”
Spartherm leaders also believe that it is a smart idea to be electrical-power independent and have the possibility for at least one warm room in wintertime if there is a power outage. “Human beings like to feel secure, and a burning wood fire always gives us that feeling,” Bauer says.
LEADING THE WAY
Since its founding in 1986, Spartherm’s fireplace products have captured the attention of consumers who are looking for state-of-the-art fireplace design and functionality. And consumers love that Spartherm’s products are engineered and built in Germany.
“Germany still has a good reputation for highquality and durable products. We wouldn’t be on the market for more than 35 years and being one of the top European brands if we did not have that

RH Peterson’s products ignite the industry as it celebrates 75 years of being in business.
BY DANA ROBINSON
CREATING A COZY FIRELIT SPACE FOR A BUSINESS OR IN THE HOME
seems like a simple task—just throw a lighted match beneath a well-organized pile of kindling and enjoy watching the flames grow. But maintaining that fire is quite another matter. Keeping a blaze crackling all night requires purchasing and storing endless quarts of firewood, and keeping a safe distance when throwing huge logs on the fire that can send sparks flying. And, of course, there’s the messy cleanup of ash from the hearth as well as chimney and flue maintenance.
Bob Peterson, founder of RH Peterson Co., found a cleaner, safer way to keep a room warm and well lit. In 1948, he launched an Altadena, California-based kitchen remodeling business. And while enjoying lunch at a nearby restaurant in Pasadena, he learned that the owner was having trouble keeping the fire in his wood-burning fireplace consistently lit. Peterson put his mechanical engineering degree to good use and created a gas burner for the fireplace, fashioning gas logs from chicken wire and an aggregate of materials that could be molded to withstand fireplace heat. The result was a beautiful, realistic fire that need-

ed no tending—and the RH Peterson Co., along with the modern, realistic gas log set, was born in 1949.
Over the years, RH Peterson has seized on the opportunity to expand its business, beginning with the acquisition of Fire Magic Barbecues from Whittier Steel Company in 1982. The move enabled RH Peterson to offer a counter-seasonal product to its network of specialty retailers. With a heritage dating back to 1937, Fire Magic Grills were revolutionary as they were designed to be built into masonry structures.
This was the beginning of the outdoor kitchen concept, which helped usher in the popularity of the full-size outdoor room. In response to the trend, RH Peterson grew the Fire Magic line with more grill models and accessories to help consumers create the outdoor space of their dreams.
More than two decades later, the company broadened its reach again, this time with the introduction of the American Outdoor Grill
brand; and in 2012, the company acquired Designs By Garry’s line of outdoor fire features and rebranded it into American Fyre Designs. The collection of fire pits, fire tables, outdoor fireplaces, fire bowls, and many other items were designed to enhance and expand outdoor living.
BRAND POWER
Each of RH Peterson’s brands offers customers new and exciting ways to make their homes unique and more suited to their needs; and this past year, it has unveiled even more products within each line to help clients achieve their goals: “We’re incredibly excited about the launch of our new Fire Magic EL 500 Electric Grill,” says Dominque Seim, president. “It delivers a premium electric grilling experience and offers an alternative for grillers who are seeking a sustainable product or are living in an area where open flame grills are not allowed.”

75 and Going Strong
AS RH PETERSON CO. CELEBRATES THEIR 75-YEAR ANNIVERSARY,
two of their top dealers share what makes RH Peterson Co. unique and different in terms of product development, technology, customer service, and the all-important partnership factor.
Hearth and grill users have been singing the praises of RH Peterson Co. for decades. For dealers who sell the company’s products, the relationships run deep—built on a legacy of trust, friendship, and profitability.
Rick Forshaw Jr., co-owner of Forshaw’s (St. Louis, MO) has been selling RH Peterson products since the 1950s. Forshaw remembers hearing his grandfather talk about when Bob Peterson used to drive from California to Ohio to see his family during the summer, bringing gas logs in his station wagon to sell to new customers along the way.
“My grandfather, Joseph Forshaw III, bought some gas logs from Bob on one of these trips,” Forshaw Jr. says. “We’ve been buying RHP products as long as they have been selling them outside California. We’re their oldest distributor outside California. The business began with gas logs, but we now do well with all of their products, such as: Real Fyre vented & vent-free gas logs; Fire Magic grills; American Outdoor Grills; and American Fyre Designs fire features. We sell every category of product that RHP manufactures.”
That type of loyalty stems from RHP’s fundamental willingness to do what they say they are going to do. Forshaw Jr. sums it up: “They are honest and easy to do business with. They adapt to changes in the marketplace with new
worry, I can do this. I own the company!’ Then he introduced himself.”
Bortz’s passion for the hearth industry showed up again one night when Montgomery, Bortz, and a few others went out to dinner in Chicago. Montgomery remembers: “Leslie disappeared for about 20 minutes and we were all wondering where he was. He came back and asked, ‘Did you see that fireplace in front of the restaurant?’ He then explained that the fireplace industry was small and the gas log component is just a fraction of the industry. When one gas log looks bad, the whole industry looks bad! He had been rearranging the display. Leslie always had a passion for gas logs.”
After 35 years of working for Anaheim Patio, Montgomery opened Backyard Expressions with his daughter, Angela Rolish. At that point, Bortz helped considerably with inventory. Based on trust and friendship, Bortz sent a full truck of merchandise for display.
products and designs. They listen to feedback and quickly make changes.”
Consumers appreciate RHP’s made-in-the-USA philosophy, an ethos that helps sales in every category. When the company eventually switched ownership to Leslie Bortz, the core values remained—only strengthening in the ensuing years.
Jim Montgomery, owner of Backyard Expressions (Yorba Linda, CA) met Leslie Bortz, chairman of RH Peterson Co., many years ago. “While I was engaging my customer, this man comes up and starts rearranging a gas log on display,” Montgomery remembers. “I asked if I could help and also asked what was he doing. He replied, ‘Don’t
“There was no invoice or anything,” Montgomery recalls. “I called and told him that I could not afford to pay him for everything. He laughed and said that I could pay it in six months, and if I couldn’t he would give me another six months and another six months until I could. I was able to pay it off within the first six months. I called the credit manager, Kathy Blair, and she laughed. She told me that Leslie knew that I was going to pay it earlier, because he knew me. That has stuck with me ever since.”
Leslie, Kathy, and the whole RH Peterson company continue to support and encourage Backyard Expressions, and that type of service extends to dealers across the country. “It has been and continues to be a great partnership,” says Montgomery. “The relationship between Backyard Expressions and the RH Peterson company began in April of 2008 and continues even stronger today.”

RH Peterson has also raised the bar on its top-of-the-line Echelon grill—a new, state-ofcontinued on page 76

THE OUTDOOR GREATROOM COMPANY
(LAKEVIEW, MINNESOTA) will celebrate its 20th year as an outdoor fire expert this year as it continues to offer beautiful, technologically advanced products paired with consistently superior customer support.
“Our design-forward products handcrafted in Minnesota is something that is unique, and then we have a great customer service team that loves working with our trade partners,” says Monica Turner, director of brand strategy and category management. “We have an industry-leading value chain, so we’re delivering on time; we’re delivering what you want, when you want it.”
After the sale of Heat & Glo to Hearth & Home Technologies,
Dan Shimek established The Outdoor GreatRoom Company with the goal to be the consummate outdoor fire expert manufacturing high-end outdoor living products, including fire tables, burners, and outdoor fireplaces. As the cofounder of Heat & Glo, Shimek brought decades of experience in the industry that contributed to the growth and success of The Outdoor GreatRoom Company as it continues to craft innovative products to greatly enhance the livability of outdoor spaces.
HAVENWOOD RENEWED
“This past year, we relaunched the Havenwood collection, and that started shipping in October,” Turner says. The Havenwood features a handcrafted Everblend top that results in unique colors, textures, and patterns. Havenwood was an existing collection but was released last year with more detail.
“Havenwood was historically a driftwood, then a stone-gray color, so it kind of looked like wood, but we enhanced the realism of them quite a bit, so now we’re able to make it look like a wood-top firepit, but it’s not combustible,” Turner says. “It’s that concrete durability that we

have for these products.”
There are three top options in the Havenwood Collection: driftwood, carbon gray, and pebble gray. This allows customers to create a driftwood aesthetic or a faux concrete design. There are also three bases— white, black, or graphite gray—that can be mixed and matched with the tops to create a variety of finished looks to match any décor. “With the different combinations of colors as well as the top options, our trade partners are able to buy the tops and bases separately if they want to get that variety to match what the consumer comes in looking for to find their perfect fire table,” Turner says.
This lets partners have a lot of options for customers without having to carry a large amount of inventory. “We have completed tables, too, where they can just pick the right one for their market because we have that variety to tailor it to what people are looking for in their part of the U.S. and Canada,” Turner says.
The design options available in the Havenwood collection demonstrate how The Outdoor GreatRoom Company strives to give its partners what they need. During the development process of new products, the company pays close attention to trends for both indoor and outdoor

BOTTOM: Last year, The Outdoor GreatRoom Company relaunched the Havenwood collection with enhanced design elements and a variety of top and base combinations.
“You don’t need to up your inventory and buy large quantities, because we’re here in the U.S. ready to deliver products when needed, and we have a great breadth of products in the outdoor fire feature area.”
designs, as well as customer feedback. “We take a look at home trends of what’s happening inside the home, as well as outside the home, and then we also get feedback from our trade partners on what people are looking for that they’re not able to find on the market,” Turner says.
Another new release, the Uptown Iroko Fire Pit Table, also taps into current market trends with its combination of a durable Iroko wood table, black powder-coated aluminum base, and Supercast concrete surround. This construction allows customers to bring natural elements and textures outdoors with a design that is made to last.
“The teak has properties that make it a good natural wood for the outdoor space,” Turner says. “You still have to maintain it like you do with teak, but it gives you the organic, natural elements that you’re bringing into your space,
which is a trend in home design.”
The rich brown color of the teak is combined with other materials for a fashionable, on-trend overall look that has proved very popular. “Some of the bigger trends that we have with new products coming out is using mixed materials,” Turner says. “With the Uptown Iroko, you have metal, concrete, and wood all in one fire table.”
The aesthetic that is achieved by mixing materials is also found in the new Havenwood offerings. “With the Havenwood, you have a wood or concrete look with a metal base to incorporate the mixed materials—that is a trend we’re seeing in home design,” Turner says. The Outdoor GreatRoom Company knows that having options is valuable, so it has mix-and-match tops and bases, as well as complete sets for convenience. The superior technology used in its
flame products is another advantage of selecting its products.
“We have ready-to-finish outdoor fireplaces, and those are customizable to an outdoor space, so you have a lot of options with non-combustible materials to be able to get the look that’s right for that outdoor space whether you want to do a tile, marble, or stone,” Turner says. “We also have our Crystal Fire Plus Burner used in all of our products.”
DOMESTIC FOCUS
Another component that makes the company’s products attractive to its partners is that The Outdoor GreatRoom Company has no minimum quantities for its orders. “You don’t need to up your inventory and buy large quantities, because we’re here in the U.S. ready to deliver products when needed, and we have a great
breadth of products in the outdoor fire feature area,” Turner says.
Not only did its domestic manufacturing capabilities help the company keep pace with demand throughout the pandemic, but it has helped form its goals going forward. While many of its products are made at its Minnesota headquarters, some are manufactured internationally. Turner notes that the company would like to keep increasing its domestic manufacturing.
“It shaped us after COVID because we want to continue to build more and more of our products here in the U.S.,” Turner says. This advances The Outdoor GreatRoom Company’s longterm objectives for the future. “Our overarching strategies are that we want to in-source, and we want to integrate our principles in our manufacturing with our product launches.”

WITH MORE THAN
40 YEARS OF BEING A LEADER
in providing functional, technologically advanced products, ROBAX is prioritizing design elements with its most recent offerings without sacrificing the technical characteristics of its glass-ceramic panels. “We want to create more design options for end users,” says Karen Elder, product manager of glass-ceramics for SCHOTT North America Inc.
Elder explains that a recent trend in the industry is for manufacturers to use black glass ceramic on the inside of the firebox of gas fireplaces. This is aesthetically pleasing as it makes the fire look larger, and it creates a clean interior when the fire is not lit or an alluring reflection when the fire is lit.
“This has become almost a standard product for high-temperature gas fireplaces, especially the more design-oriented products,” she says. “What we’re doing now is using black glass ceramics on the actual window of the fireplace, which is kind of counterintuitive, but we’ve developed a new product that is a semi-transparent black glass ceramic that can be used for woodstove or wood fireplaces.”
ROBAX’s Night Flame allows a fireplace to be beautiful whether the

fire is lit or not. When a fire is lit in a wood fireplace, it provides ambiance and a pleasing view, but when the fireplace is not in use, it can turn an otherwise gorgeous focal point of a room into a dirty eyesore. “What our product Night Flame does is when the
fire’s not lit, the window appears black like a dead front,” Elder says. “However, when the fire is lit, the glass becomes mostly transparent.”
This is popular with customers because it creates an attractive, clean look when a fire isn’t burning without compromising the clear view of a crackling fire. The unique composition of glass ceramic used in the fire-viewing panels also has the characteristics to maintain its integrity when exposed to high temperatures. “You get the pure, almost untouched flame color that you’re used to seeing all while carrying the thermal characteristics and mechanical strength that are required in high-temperature applications like woodstoves and fireplaces,” Elder says.
ROBAX began introducing Night Flame to its customers in the spring, and it has garnered a lot of interest for its one-of-a-

THE ATMOSPHERE IS ELECTRIC
these days at longtime hearth products supplier Enviro— and it has little to do with the continuing success of its lineup of gas and pellet fireplaces.
Instead, it has everything to do with the highly anticipated debut of a luxury electric fireplace line called Uptown that the company believes will give it a foothold in the upper end of the burgeoning electric fireplace market.
Targeted to a discerning clientele that includes designers, architects, builders, and luxury homeowners, the company says the four-model lineup is designed to integrate seamlessly into a variety of room sizes and layouts. “These fireplaces serve not only as a source of warmth, but also as a stunning centerpiece, elevating the aesthetics of any space they inhabit,” says Jamie Yousief, Enviro’s marketing manager.
Set to officially launch at February’s International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, the Uptown line features models ranging from 44 inches to 80 inches wide, and Yousief insists that’s only the beginning. He notes that several additions to Uptown, as well as additions to
Enviro’s existing gas and pellet fireplace lines, are already in the works.
“The electric fireplace market is experiencing a surge in demand, and Uptown is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend,” he says. “The continuous growth in the electric fireplace market reflects a broader trend toward more sustainable and aesthetically pleasing heating solutions.”
And he says IBS is a perfect launch site for Uptown since it’s the most important trade show for the line’s target audience. “This event

serves as a platform for industry leaders to showcase their innovations and connect with a diverse audience,” Yousief says. “Uptown’s presence at IBS 2024 underscores the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry and engaging with its clientele on a larger scale.”
GROWING DEMAND
Estimates on the size of the global electric fireplace market vary widely— ranging from $2.1 billion to nearly $4 billion annually—but all of the research firms that have studied the market seem to agree that it will remain on a steady growth trajectory for the next decade.
Delaware-based Transparency Market Research, for example, estimated the market at $2.1 billion in 2020, but said it jumped to $3 billion in 2021 and predicted it will reach $4 billion by 2031.

These bases tend to be clunky overall in the industry, and we have come up with a design-focused version.
We have also extended our polymer deep seating and now it all comes in high back, which was requested quite a bit. We tweaked many more of our designs in ways that matter most to our customers. By focusing on current offerings, we have been able to spend more time and energy on our core mission—become the easiest manufacturer to work with that is extremely customer focused. We will be introducing some new product next season!
How is Windward partnering with retailers to help them grow their businesses?
Peace: Our goal is to become the easiest manufacturer to work with, which means hyperfocusing on service. We understand that the economy is tough, and retailers are facing many challenges. Last season was slow, so many of them are still inundated with excess inventory they purchased at a premium. We’ve taken a personal approach and are working with our reps one-on-one to help work different territories and retailers in a way that meets them where they are at. We are taking into account their needs and figuring out how we can develop programs specifically tailored to them so it’s a win for our partnership.
We have also incorporated a new software system that gives retailers and sales reps their own portals, so they have access to data including specifics on their sales with us down to colorways and SKUs; the ability to track cur-

rent orders; and have live-time data of their account(s) standing, etc. Having this information will allow them to make better business decisions now and for the future.
What do you see as the company’s biggest opportunity and challenge going into 2024?
Peace: I’m a very optimistic person overall, so I instinctively see challenges as opportunities. I think the demand for outdoor furniture will continue to rise regardless of what is going on in the economy and in our country. COVID created a mindset that one’s outdoor space is very important. Residentially, people look at it as an outdoor room that is an extension of their homes where they can entertain and relax.
On the hospitality side of the industry, outdoor amenities are seen as more important than ever before. Recognizing that even though the demand for outdoor furniture will exist and, in some verticals, increase, we may see an interesting season ahead due to various situations in our country that are outside of our control.
The only thing we can do is focus on what we can control and prepare for what we cannot. Just as when the pandemic started, businesses must be prepared to pivot, think outside the box, and navigate through uncertainties. Windward is prepared to do everything we can to be reliable and consistent for our customers no matter what, and we carry this mindset into every
the deciding factors in purchase decisions.”
Most manufacturers of casual products experienced a huge surge in demand as people stayed home and created gathering and work spaces. While demand at Telescope Casual was certainly overwhelming, Juckett says the company and employees jumped into action as quickly as possible to make the necessary adjustments to meet the demand in orders. “We were lucky enough to remain open and to keep all of our staff employed during that time. In fact, we significantly increased our employment by 40%.”
She adds, “Our employees are rockstars and most defi-
decision we make as we prepare for the years ahead.
What emerging trends do you see in outdoor furniture?
Peace: I predict that manufacturers will get more creative with marine grade polymer as it is becoming more popular with consumers. Right now, a lot of the styles are cookie cutter, so there is a lot of room to experiment with new styles and design. I also feel like the look of outdoor furniture that mimics indoor furniture is on the rise.
Lastly, I am seeing more multifunctional pieces with built-in storage like sectionals with under seat storage, fire pits that can be used as tables, and tables with hidden storage areas. Furniture for smaller spaces is also growing in popularity because many people are choosing to live in apartments and condos.
What is the future for the Windward Design Group?
Peace: I think it’s the concept of marrying the foundation that has made Windward what it is today with more modern technology, stronger customer care, and some added style. We will remain focused on being the best family-owned, domestic manufacturer in the industry with special-order capabilities. The backbone of what we do is quality furniture, delivered with a quick lead time and at value pricing—we plan to still be that for the next 30 years.
nitely our best asset.” For example, during the height of demand, 50% of the workforce volunteered to work on Saturdays. “We are lucky to have such dedicated personnel to help us navigate these ever-evolving times.”
120 YEARS AND COUNTING
Telescope Casual celebrated the company’s 120th anniversary in 2023, and is now under the care of the fourth and fifth generations of the Vanderminden family. Statistics say that 30% of family businesses survive to the second generation and only 12% make it from the second to the third. Juckett notes a few reasons why Telescope Casual has not only survived but thrived as a successful multigenerational family business.
“Nobody in our family has a say unless they have earned a spot. Not one of our family members is here by
default—every single one has worked hard for the position they have,” she says. “We have cultivated a culture that carries a high level of respect for everyone’s right to have a different opinion. It is through our diversity of opinion we get great resolutions to our problems.”
Respecting and valuing the environment has been passed down from previous generations, and green initiatives run deep in the company culture. Juckett notes anywhere the company can, it acts as environmentally friendly as possible. For example, the facility is heated with locally cultivated wood and wood waste. In addition, several green initiatives have been built into the production, including the recycling of scrap from MGP, aluminum, steel, cardboard, and old catalogs. “We are in the beginning stages of converting our wood director chair finishes over to water-based paint to make our waste from the production of these chairs more environmentally friendly,” Juckett says.
In reflecting on receiving the ICFA Lifetime Achievement Award, Juckett says while she knows Telescope Casual has accomplished great things, she feels she has much of her career still ahead of her. She is eager to keep moving forward. “I can’t help but think how lucky I am to be surrounded by such an incredible group of people. My family, our employees, sales reps, and our loyal dealers and suppliers all make it possible to achieve what we have. Our industry is the best of the best, and I am incredibly proud and thankful to be a part of it.”

power of innovation, quality, and comfort within the products,” Bauer says.
So what is Spartherm seeing in terms of consumer trends and interests in fireplace design today? As Bauer explains, the market for Spartherm is split 50% in decorative fireplaces and 50% in EPA-approved fireplaces, inserts, and free-standing stoves.
“The decorative fireplaces are for the upmarket clients who own a large home with a large living area. It is the price range for the upper middle class to the top,” Bauer says. “The other range under the header ‘Gemuetlichkeit,’ a German word for coziness, is more middle-class priced and created for smaller houses and living rooms and is EPA approved.”
Following this trend, Spartherm will introduce in February a 42-inch-wide front fireplace with a mesh and glass door—the biggest-tested fireplace in North America. “In addition, we have enlarged the 600 and 700 range with the new 800 insert, fireplace, and freestanding stove,” Bauer says.
Keeping its finger on the proverbial pulse on the fireplace market has been paramount to Spartherm’s success. As such, the Spartherm team sees a strong trend toward European design in combination with natural stones and wood from the North American landscape.
As Bauer explains, in the high-priced housing market, the famous style of architect Frank Lloyd Wright is coming back. “The integration of the house in the landscape using building material from the area is, in the meantime, more important than creating a million ‘same-looking’ villas based on the design of an English

castle,” Bauer says. “A house with the possibility for wood burning has higher value than a house without. It is as simple as it sounds.”
So what are some types of hearth products that consumers are no longer showing interest in? According to Bauer, after the energy crisis, it was the gas products, because of the strong price increase on gas. But that was only a psychological reason, not based on facts. “The gas consumption of a gas fireplace is so low that the price increase does not really affect the bill so tremendously that you should not think about buying it,” Bauer says. “Furthermore, did the energy price increase also count for the wood?”
Today, Bauer says consumers are striving more and more to incorporate preeminent fireplace designs in their homes and are willing to pay more for a technically well-made product.
“A lot of people think about the environment and comfort. We think about bringing the electronic combustion control, or a remote-controlled lifting door to the North American market,” Bauer says. “It is all standard for Spartherm in Europe, but not in the U.S. market yet. The market is moving more and more away from the UK and countryside style toward modern European living style.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Spartherm will be launching a series of new products in 2024 that are bound to capture the attention and interests of global consumers. After a successful launch of EPA-certified 600 and 700 range models in 2019,

the-art black glass touchscreen control that offers even more precise cooking results and Bluetooth connectivity. Now grillers can have the added convenience of monitoring the grill remotely from a smartphone. New Real Fyre products include a Flame Enhancer Kit designed to intensify the flame delivered on the popular G45 and G4 burners, bringing even greater realism and beauty to the fireplace. “From American Outdoor Grill, we launched a new contemporary island package that offers a premium and convenient all-in-one outdoor kitchen solution,” Seim says.
New from American Fyre Designs is the Milan Front View Linear Fireplace offering a contemporary outdoor fireplace available in a tall and low version, with electronic ignition and Bluetooth control from a smartphone.
From its small beginnings in Southern California, RH Peterson has grown to include a staff of more than 200 employees and has stretched its wings to not only include more brands, but more customers in its 75 years in business. “We like to say we’re a homegrown company with global reach,” Seim says. “Our products are sold through hundreds of authorized retailers across the United States and are available in Canada, Europe, and Mexico. We’re also proud to announce our recent expansion of the Fire Magic line into Australia and New Zealand.”
Product popularity varies from region to region, but Seim notes that demand for the Fire Magic, American Outdoor Grill, and American Fyre Designs products continue to be strong in the Sun Belt region due to the
year-round warm climate. And vented gas log products from Real Fyre Vented Gas Log Systems, which can be installed in any existing wood-burning fireplace, have become popular Sun Belt products as well.
And as the outdoor living trend becomes increasingly popular across the U.S., demand for these products continues to grow in colder regions in the north, he says. Real Fyre Vent-Free Gas Log Systems, considered to be 99% energy efficient, enjoy increased popularity in the Southeast.
But no matter where a customer resides, manufacturers must always be prepared to offer products that fall in line with the latest trends. This sometimes comes in the form of stocking several sizes of grills and fire features to accommodate the customers’ needs, or having plenty of products available in the season’s trendiest colors that are making the rounds on social media. But RH Peterson customers tend to seek out products that offer added convenience in terms of usability and functionality, Seim notes.
And the company has answered the call with its aforementioned smartphone-controlled grills and burners as well as its remote-controlled American Fyre Designs’ FyreStarter electronic ignition system. Outdoor kitchen products with greater functionality, like the Fire Magic Pizza Oven with a main door that can hold up to 50 pounds and Fire Magic Gourmet Griddle with dual heavy-duty stainless-steel burners, meet that demand allowing backyard chefs to cook almost anything imaginable in their outdoor kitchen.
Spartherm will be introducing its 800 EPA-certified range of stoves, with zero clearances and inserts, that can heat larger areas thanks in part to its expansive size.
“The natural clean combustion dynamic of this range creates a fantastic clean fire view. Modern straight lines and large fire glass give an unhindered view of the fire,” Bauer says. “The 800 inserts will be interesting for the U.S. market as they have larger masonry fireplaces, and the request for a larger insert has been very clear. The zero clearance option 800 also gives the customers the ability to have European design and clean contemporary features in any room.”
Spartherm’s upcoming Varia B120 fireplace may be the largest factory-built fireplace in the North American market. As Bauer explains, the market has been asking for this type of “dynamic’’ fireplace, and the unit has been built to accommodate these desires.
“Having the option of burning the fire with a closed lift door system, as well as the option of burning the fireplace with the door open with the option of a mesh fire screen, has revolutionized our design,” Bauer says. “It was important to keep the European design and the utmost quality and safety but integrated with the ‘on the ground’ requirements from the North American market. The mesh door system is integrally designed to work and function in the same way as our glass door lift door function. This fireplace will fill a void as it is almost a custom-built unit that has been certified for the market.”
75 AND COUNTING
This year, the company will be celebrating its 75th year in business, and executives have plans to mark the occasion in a big way. “We are thrilled to be celebrating 75 years of manufacturing excellence,” Seim says. “We’ve got several initiatives underway to commemorate this important milestone, including a specially created anniversary logo, a new company video that will explore the company’s rich history, and celebrations with our RH Peterson family of customers, reps, and employees.”
So, what’s RH Peterson’s secret to staying in business for nearly eight decades? Maybe it lies in its pride in providing American-made products that are designed and manufactured in Southern California with unmatched attention to detail and performance. Or that the company continually innovates by investing in research and development, staying up to date on the latest technological advancements, and actively seeking feedback from customers to ensure that its products not only meet but exceed customer expectations and remain at the forefront of the industry.
“We are committed to providing independent specialty retailers with the very finest products and product support,” Seim says. “And through them we promise to continue delivering the highest quality products that enhance and elevate people’s experiences at home.”

kind design. “There’s never been anything like this on the market before,” Elder says. “It solves a lot of negatives, especially when the fire’s not lit.”
WHY GLASS CERAMICS?
The demand for high-temperature gas fireplaces and woodstoves continues to grow because of the functionality they offer customers. Regular or tempered glass may experience thermal breakage when exposed to the extremely hot temperatures produced by a wood, gas, or pellet stove. However, glass ceramics is an ideal material for panels in a fireplace because of its heat resistance—withstanding temperatures of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
“Because of the unique characteristics of ceramics and glass, glass ceramics has near zero glass expansion,” Elder says. “The thermal resistance and near zero thermal expansion are two of the most important characteristics for using it in fireplace and other high temperature applications.”
All ROBAX glass products carry these same thermal characteristics in any application, including the black, semitransparent black glass used in the Night Flame. “If it wasn’t for a transparent glass ceramic solution like what we have,
LAST WORD
you wouldn’t be able to see the fire in a woodstove,” Elder says. “It’s really the only thing that can withstand the temperatures with a closed off woodstove, which is of course even more important nowadays with the EPA requirements for woodstove emission standards.”
In keeping with its desire to provide customers with products they want with ROBAX’s expertly engineered technical characteristics, the company crafted ROBAX Magic with Signature Impressions that takes the contemporary design of glass ceramics in fireplace applications and elevates it further. Different colors, textures, and decorative patterns can be applied to the glass such as black glass with a gold marble print, which gives customers more customization and design choices. Other color choices include gray, blue-gray, and white that can be combined with smooth, nubbed, or grooved surfaces and additional decorative options.
ROBAX Magic was designed with customers, market trends, and SCHOTT ROBAX’s high standards in mind. The company has its own internal team paying close attention to the market, as well as feedback from manufacturers and consumers. “A lot of our

That’s a compound annual growth rate of 6.1% during that 10-year span.
Another Delaware-based research firm, Future Market Insights, was slightly less optimistic, projecting a compound annual growth rate of 3.7% from 2022 to 2032. The firm predicted the market would hit $3.2 billion by 2032.
But while researchers may differ over the fine points of the data, Yousief agrees that the electric fireplace market is trending up smartly, and he believes Enviro is poised to take advantage of those opportunities at the upper end of the market. “The company anticipates a robust performance in 2024 and is gearing up for exciting additions to its product line,” he says. “As the market continues to evolve, Uptown remains dedicated to providing cutting-edge solutions that redefine the concept of home heating, making a lasting impression in the hearts and homes of its customers.”
Yousief says the company is unapologetic about positioning the Uptown line at the high end of the market because that’s where it sees the best opportunity to grow its business. “It offers a competitive edge against other premium brands while maintaining a more accessible price point,” he says. “This strategic positioning makes Uptown a preferred choice for those seeking sophistication without compromising on affordability.”
development is driven by what our customers are saying,” Elder says. “We understand not just the technical needs, but the trends that are happening, and we get a lot of that from our customers.”
STRONG RELATIONSHIPS
As a component supplier, ROBAX has a longer timeline with product introductions as it releases innovations into the market to be picked up, developed, and then sold to the consumer. Elder emphasizes that working closely with industry partners and building strong relationships with them is a priority for the company and is essential at each stage of product development and marketing.
“We’re very well known in this industry because we’ve been a close partner for many years,” she says. “We’ve always supported the HBPA (Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association), we’ve always worked closely with our customers, and we’ve also been a partner in the industry while being close to the market and the needs of our customers.”
This commitment separates SCHOTT ROBAX from other companies and is another reason for its success as a technical glass company all over the world in applications including automo-
A distinctive feature that makes the Uptown line stand out is its western timber log set, Yousief notes. Made from authentic Canadian Douglas Fir and handcrafted by skilled artisans, he adds that each log set is assembled manually, resulting in a high-end rustic look. “The real wood log set offers a distinct look that cannot be found anywhere else in North America, making it a signature feature of Uptown fireplaces.”
The log sets and fireplaces are designed at Sherwood Industries’ corporate headquarters on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
Yousief says the Uptown line “represents a new innovation of design and functionality in the hearth industry” that builds on the company’s long history with gas and pellet hearth products.
“With over 30 years of experience, Sherwood Industries has honed its expertise that stands out in terms of quality and aesthetic appeal,” he adds. “The versatility (of Uptown) ensures that Uptown can seamlessly integrate into various room sizes and architectural layouts, providing customers with options that suit their specific needs.”
BEYOND ELECTRIC
And since the company recognizes an electric fireplace may not suit everyone’s needs, Yousief says it is continuing to enhance the gas and pellet stoves, fireplaces, and related hearth products that have become synonymous
tive, pharmaceuticals, space, and home and living products. For decades, it has upheld the company’s ideals and kept its partners and customers at the forefront.
“SCHOTT is a technology company, but you can have the greatest technology in the world, but if you don’t understand the market and have partners within it, you’re not going to be making the right products,” Elder says.
As a company, SCHOTT ROBAX also holds itself to the highest standards for sustainability and was recently awarded a National German Sustainability Award (Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis) in the glass and ceramics category. It also has taken on a historic endeavor by committing to be climate neutral by 2030. In striving toward this goal, the company has reduced its carbon emissions by 60% since 2019. For the last two years, it has also worked to offset any carbon created where a renewable source was not available.
“We want to be the first specialty glass company to achieve that, and that is a very big lift when you’re talking about melting glass at extremely high temperatures,” Elder says. “We have very specific and concrete goals to achieve this. It’s something that we’re very proud of. It’s distinct in the glass business.”
with Enviro since its founding in 1989.
The company is perhaps most excited about its Urbana line of luxury gas fireplaces that was introduced in 2020. The line features 30-, 50-, and 70-inch models with a bay design. Like the Uptown electric fireplace line, Urbana is aimed at the high end of the market and is proving to be popular with designers, architects, and builders of luxury homes.
Also popular at the upper end of the market is Enviro’s lineup of linear gas fireplaces, not to mention its extensive offering of freestanding gas stoves, wood stoves, fireplace inserts, and log sets.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Sherwood was founded in 1989 by Thomas O’Connor, Martin O’Connor, and Cherbel Yousief. Their first product was a wood stove called Seefire. It was a success, but stricter environmental regulations triggered the company’s move into pellet stoves, and it became the first manufacturer of pellet stoves in Canada.
Over the years, the company expanded its pellet stove lineup, added gas stoves and fireplace inserts in the early 1990s, and rolled out an extensive line of gas fireplaces in 2000.
Cherbel Yousief and Stuart O’Connor acquired 100% interest in the company in 2015, and since then, numerous additions have been made to the Enviro line of gas and pellet products.
