I love travel. I love seeing new places, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. It’s beneficial to get out of our comfort zones and to spend time with people different than us. It gives us new perspectives and helps us to see that differences are not only OK, they are good. But we don’t always have the time or money to travel far, and we don’t have to. We can do a little staycation (see our story on page 46) and experience a different part of where we live. I have had the opportunity to do a house swap with a friend. She and her family are staying at my beach condo and I’m staying in her downtown home for a month.

This has been an interesting experience.

It sounded a little crazy and scary at first. But, I figured, what the heck – why not? Look for reasons to say yes instead of no. Three days later I was packed up and out of my home. That alone was an experience. What do you pack for a month? What do you remove from your place to make room for someone else to settle in for a month?

And something I’ve found interesting about moving into someone is, what do I need to feel comfortable and settled? My pillow, of course. Maybe a favorite blanket. Having my dog definitely makes me feel settled I am.

Like any big move or change, I went into this thinking I could reflect and ponder life. Maybe finally read those books that have dust (so how many books should I pack up and haul with me – how actually going to read?) or learn a new language or explore som

The truth is, no matter where you go, there you are. You quickly slide into the same habits and rhythms you had at home. There is some comfort in that, and it helps you to not feel wonky. It also means, wherever you are, you have to be intentional about how you live your daily life.

I’m only 12 days into this little experiment, but getting out o was the personal growth I needed. So far, I’ve joined the YMCA and have been going to yoga classes and swimming laps. I’ve also enjoyed walk and lunches and a couple of dinners out. It was uncomfortable t but I’m settling into some old rhythms that give me comfort and new ones while learning some things about myself.

Speaking of growth, I am excited to add an outstanding editor t – Lisa Player. Lisa is taking a leading role working alongside me and our Bella writers to bring you even more of the content our readers love. will be so valuable in continuing Bella’s growth. You’ll learn more about her next month in our September issue.

Until then, get out of your comfort zone and try something new

AURA August

Nature, Western, tribal vibes inspire

Travel to botanical gardens and the Wild West for fashion insight this August!

Wide leg pants, beautiful florals in saturated violets, lavenders, sage greens as well as other vivid hues are on point. Rich orange, deep dramatic red and cobalt blue promise to make a statement – often showing up in tribal prints.

“Classic off-white, black and beige for the neutral lovers will be strong for us as well,” said Diane McLaughlin of Lee Tracy in downtown Pensacola, noting that pants are trending looser – perfect for the Gulf Coast’s tropical August temps.

“I am seeing a pretty universal trend in pants this season, with a looser cut throughout, some tapered at the hem, like a jogger, as well as full, wide leg all the way down, in both jeans and trousers and slacks. As for lengths, we will be seeing ankle length and cropped going into fall, which are so cute with boots and heels!”

Suiting and particularly blazers are a closet staple looking towards autumn.

“Blazers – plaid, prints or solid – will be an essential piece to have in your closet,” said McLaughlin. “Throw them over a t-shirt and shorts or jeans on the weekend, and to work with your dress pant.”

Feminine floral influences are in full bloom this fall.

“Florals will be strong again this season in blouses, detailed sleeves and feminine cuts,” McLaughlin said.

If flowers aren’t your thing, take a walk on the wild side.

“Animal print remains a classic,” said McLaughlin, adding that Aztec and Western influences are strong.

Not unlike leg wear cuts, the latest accessories are big!

“Oversized bags and totes are making a scene. Large or extra-large sunglasses are still on trend, and chunky jewelry will be fun for fall,” she said.

Sneakers are everybody’s favorites for casual comfort. For a dressy look, retro-inspired pointy toes are on trend.

Susan Mohr

Retirement after more than 30 years as a physical therapist has opened a new chapter waiting to be written for Susan Mohr.

“I’m looking forward to this new stage of life,” said the Minnesota native, who recently moved out to the country and is digging the idea of vegetable farming. And spending more time with her daughters and their families, including five grandchildren who are five and under. She is also expanding her travel range.

“I have only traveled in the continental United States, but have many places on my travel bucket list including Norway, Alaska, Israel, Greece and Italy,” said Mohr, adding that visiting all of the national parks is a retirement goal.

Mohr’s Midwestern roots have been replaced with Southern life.

“I was born in Minnesota and that is where all of my relatives were, but we moved away when I was young as my father was transferred frequently during his career. I grew up in the Midwest and ended up attending college in Missouri. I met my husband there. His mother and her family were Pensacola natives and early in our marriage we all moved south.”

Frequenting area festivals and Palafox Market, as well as exercising to stay healthy and fit, are among Mohr’s pastimes.

“When I have free time in the Pensacola area, I love to go on morning walks on the beautiful beaches in the area.”

steps to simplify makeup and skincare for travel

Packing for travel can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to figuring out how to take makeup and skincare. After investing a small fortune into your daily beauty routine, you want to make sure you have everything you need and that it will arrive safely. Your skin and hair might go into shock if you used hotel soap and shampoo, so it is important to have all your necessary products on hand to look and feel your best while away.

1. MAKE A LIST

Write out a list of the outfits you are packing so that you can plan to bring the correct products. Always look ahead at the weather. It may be extremely different than what you are coming from and will require different moisturizers, cleansers, primers and setting sprays. You may want a variety of eyeshadow and lipstick options to change up your look from day to day.

2. ALWAYS PLAN TO CARRY ON MAKEUP AND SKINCARE

Although it is much easier to check a bag and throw all your full-sized products in, if you master the art of packing to carry on, you will always have what you need if your luggage gets lost. There is also the risk of things getting broken when the bags are tossed onto the plane. If you keep a travel bag of products ready to go, packing for an overnight trip or a weeklong stay will be stress free.

3. USE A PADDED MAKEUP BAG

Find a padded makeup bag that will fit well into your suitcase without being too bulky. Padding will protect your favorite products and ensure they arrive to your destination in one piece. Place cotton pads or paper

towels inside your compacts to protect shadows, blush and any pressed powders.

4. TRANSFER LIQUIDS INTO SMALLER CONTAINERS

Instead of taking your bottle of makeup remover, opt for travel-sized makeup wipes. Purchase travel-sized containers, and pare down anything that is too big and heavy. Make sure to follow all TSA guidelines when packing. You don’t want to have your essential products taken at security and then have to spend precious vacation time trying to find what you need while on your trip. All of your liquids must be less than three ounces and in a quart-sized Ziplock bag. This includes makeup, skincare and hair products.

5.

INVEST IN MULTI-USE PRODUCTS

Not everything can be multi-use, but there are so many great products on the market that serve multiple purposes. Find a blush palette that can also be used to contour and use as eye shadow. Instead of taking four different lip liners and lipsticks, pack the lip liners to fill in the whole lip and finish the lip with a lip balm or gloss. Instead of packing a foundation and SPF and moisturizer, take a tinted moisturizer that has SPF in it.

6. USE PALETTES

Find palettes that are compact and have colors you like and use. They will take up less space than individual eye shadows and blushes. Taking a palette that is oversized with 30 different eyeshadow options is a waste of space and the reality is you will likely use only four of those shades. Choose according to what you will actually use for the outfits you are taking and that fits into the space you have.

7. TRAVEL-SIZED PRODUCTS

Whenever your favorite products offer travel size, buy them! Not all cosmetic lines offer smaller versions, but from time to time they will. If you see a “starter” set of skincare or promo travel-sized makeup brush set during the holidays, stock up and set them aside for your next trip. You can always use travel-sized bottles and containers to put your product into when you can’t find smaller options.

8. CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Always clean your brushes before a trip. There is nothing worse than arriving to a clean hotel room or Airbnb to open your makeup bag with dirty brushes full of last month’s makeup. It is important to do this the night before you leave. Lay out your makeup brushes and decide exactly what you will need to take. Shampoo them with mild soap and rinse until they are clean. Lay your brushes out on a towel with the head of the brush hanging over the counter’s edge so that the air can dry the brush all the way around it. You do not want to pack slightly wet brushes. They will be dry and ready to go the next morning when you pack.

20 • Bella Magazine • August 2023 beauty
10

Before you pack everything into your makeup bag, lay it out and make sure you are not taking more than you need. Over-packing product adds weight and takes up space you might need to bring home a purchase from your trip. Only take items necessary. Group products, take out anything you don’t need and pack each group into Ziplock bags to guard against spills and leaks.

10. ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH A MAKEUP REFRESHER SPRAY

There are several sprays to choose from to use while applying makeup. Most of these sprays have multiple uses. They hydrate the skin before makeup, set powders after application and can be used as a final step once all makeup is on to create long lasting wear. Always have a hydration spray on hand to freshen your skin and makeup after a long day of traveling. Recycled air in cars and on planes can dehydrate the skin quickly.

Making big strides to save lives

Mark your calendars for August’s exciting and inspirational 2023 Kickoff Celebration of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Pensacola.

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just a walk, it’s a movement,” said Melanie Row, senior development manager of the American Cancer Society/Southeast Region. “Every October, we gather the Pensacola Community in the fight against breast cancer to help raise awareness and funds.”

The 2023 goal is $290,000, according to Row.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• Aug. 24: Kickoff Celebration, Sanders Beach, 913 South I St.; RSVP to Melanie Row at melanie.row@cancer.org

• Oct. 13: Survivor Luncheon, Pensacola Yacht Club, 1897 Cypress St; one caregiver can join a survivor; register online at makingstrideswalk.org/ pensacolafl.

• Oct. 28: Annual 5K, Seville Square; a non-competitive event open to individuals and teams. Register online at makingstrideswalk.org/ pensacolafl.

Questions? Contact Melanie Row at melanie.row@cancer.org or 850-407-4735.

“Because of the generosity of the Pensacola community, patients who would not have access to care can have rides to their lifesaving treatment with our Road to Recovery Program,” she explained. “Breast cancer patients can join our Reach to Recovery Program where they are connected with a breast cancer survivor and receive support, understanding and hope.”

None of this would be possible without the Pensacola community.

“I can’t say thank you enough to the volunteers and community for the continued support,” Row said. “It’s because of you that lives are being saved!”

Baptist Health Care is the premier sponsor of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Pensacola, a volunteer-led organization. With Angela Lane at the helm as event chair, anyone can join the volunteer committee and assist in planning events.

“I have been involved with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for fifteen years,” Lane said. “I started as a participant to help raise awareness. I lost a grandmother to breast cancer when I was just seven years old. It has always troubled me. I always felt like I wanted to do more and to be more involved with helping others facing losing their loved ones to this dreaded disease.”

She jumped at the chance to help.

“I went from walking in support to joining committees and volunteering for several years, and then ten years ago became a captain and began building a team,” Lane said. “Four years ago, I added event chair to my role as well.”

Lane strongly believes that raising awareness helps saves lives.

“The funds raised by Making Strides Against Breast Cancer are working to find new treatments, new procedures, to help with care of those facing their diagnosis and someday… yes, one day, find a cure,” Lane said.

Travel in Style

Essential packing guide for your next trip!

Traveling can be an exhilarating experience, offering opportunities for adventure, self-discovery and immersion in new cultures. For women travelers, packing efficiently and effectively is essential to ensure a stress-free journey. By considering the destination, climate, duration of the trip and personal preferences, you can assemble a versatile and well-rounded travel wardrobe.

Diane McLaughlin, manager of Lee Tracy in Pensacola, shared this advice for travel packing: “When choosing your wardrobe to pack for travel, consider the fabrics. Make sure they are breathable, easy to launder and try to find a good non-wrinkle fabric whenever possible. The less TLC your clothing needs, the more fun you will have on your trip!”

Choose a pair of sturdy and comfortable shoes suitable for exploring various terrains, and include a pair of sandals or flip-flops for beach destinations or relaxing by the pool. Bring a versatile pair of shoes for evenings out or more formal occasions if those activities are on your itinerary.

“When I have women coming in looking for outfits and ideas for an upcoming cruise, vacation, holiday or even a work event, I always

& Comfort

suggest my travel line by Clara Sun Woo. We’ve been carrying Clara S. for over 15 years, because of her fabrics. She uses a polyrayon-spandex mix that is out of this world. Not only is it extremely comfortable, but it’s also wrinkle free. It’s super flattering on every body type and size, and her fabrics simply drape effortlessly. She designs everything from dresses to jumpsuits, basics to bomber jackets, and every style pant and top you can think of,” McLaughlin said

What you pack it in matters as well.

“When I travel, I tend to pack it all in my carry-on. It doesn’t happen always, especially on winter trips, but I try – it’s easy to do if you give it a whirl – my sister just returned from a 10-day trip to Italy, and sure enough, got it ALL in her carry-on” she exclaimed.

McLaughlin suggests exploring the great travel cubes available and researching vacuum packing options that save space, allowing travelers to pack more.

Consider leaving a little extra space in your bags for additional purchases made on your trip, or plan to ditch some of your clothing before your return trip to make room for items you pick up along the way. Plan to hand wash and re-wear some items if your stay is for more than a few days.

Choose accessories with weather in mind. A stylish hat and a pair of sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun and an umbrella or rain jacket could save a travel day

Don’t forget a passport wallet, packing cubes and TSA regulation-size toiletry bottles!

from ruin. It’s a good idea to limit your jewelry to a few versatile pieces to accessorize your outfits. It’s wise to leave expensive or sentimental jewelry pieces at home to avoid loss or damage.

McLaughlin also suggests packing the bare basics and using the capsule packing method.

“Every woman needs a good white button down, a pair of jeans, a blazer or cardigan, a nice pair of black dress pants with a good tank top or camisole. With these basic necessities, adding layers and switching out pieces offers a wide variety of looks. Pick a color scheme, maybe two or three colors, and stick to those when considering what to pack. They can all be varying shades of a certain color, but you can mix and match much easier when your color palette jives. Many women play it safe with black and white, but have fun with bold accessories, add a striped tee or a super colorful scarf or kimono.”

Scarves can add a huge pop of excitement and do double duty as belts, and they take up little room in the suitcase.

“Throwing in a fun dress is always a good idea – wear it during the day with a cute pair of sneaks, or later on at night with a wedge or little heel. Bottom line, wear what makes you happy,” McLaughlin said.

Give your outfits a test run before you leave for your trip. Ashley Herkie, contributor for the Facebook group Travel Fashion Girls, has good advice.

“Dress comfy first. It doesn’t matter how cute you want to look, if you’re not comfortable then it’ll never be worth the pain,” she said.

Herkie suggests that travelers shouldn’t be concerned that they look like tourists.

“No matter how hard you try you’ll never look/dress like a local and that’s OK. Vacation is where you’re supposed to wear the outfits you wouldn’t normally wear and go a little bit out of your comfort zone. Don’t ever think you’re doing too much, or you’re overdressed. You’re on vacation; have fun,” she said.

more concerned about how they look than how you look. You are spending lots of money on vacation and travel. Give yourself the freedom to wear and do what you want.

Carry a lightweight daypack or tote for daily outings and excursions, and pack a smaller bag for evenings out or when you only need to carry essentials. Invest in a travel wallet to keep your important documents, such as passports, ID cards and travel itineraries, organized and easily accessible. RFID blocking wallets can help provide safety for microchipped information. The technology reduces the reader’s signal power which prevents the microchip from working. In turn, that means your data is kept safe by making it more difficult to read the information on your ID card, credit card and passport. Transfer your essential toiletries, such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash and skincare products, into travel-sized containers to save space and comply with carry-on restrictions. Check TSA and airline websites for up-to-date guidelines.

Remember to place any necessary prescription medications and basic over-the-counter remedies in your carry-on bag or purse. Stash a change of underwear and other essential items in your carry-on bag in case your luggage gets delayed or lost. It’s also a good idea to keep your tablet or smart phone handy for accessing travel apps. Ensure you have the necessary chargers and adapters for those devices.

By packing strategically, you can create a travel wardrobe that is comfortable, versatile, stylish and fun. Remember to consider the climate, duration of the trip and activities planned to ensure you have the appropriate clothing and accessories. Traveling light and focusing on essentials will not only make navigating airports and transportation easier but will also allow for more flexibility during your journey. By following this comprehensive packing guide, you can embark on your travel adventures wellprepared and with confidence, ready to enjoy many exciting adventures around the globe.

Making the most of managing a short-

The term “passive income” is an appealing one, and over the past few years, many are exploring the option of hosting short-term rentals for that source of “easy money.” But how easy is owning or managing a short-term rental? Loosely defined, a short-term rental, or STR, is a furnished property available to rent for 30 days or fewer. Also called vacation rentals, STR sites like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Flipkey are where travelers find alternative lodging to hotels or traditional bed and breakfasts.

Let’s focus on the prospect of starting your own revenue-generating passive income source that requires little effort to manage. It can also mean working for yourself.

“It’s given me the flexibility of and the ability to have my own schedule,” said short-term rental owner Cheryl Russell. “I have found this so fulfilling. These people save all year long to come to the spaces that I provide for them and spend their one-week vacation with us here in Pensacola, Florida. It has made me really appreciate where we live and how lucky we are as a community.”

According to Airbnb.com, bookings through that platform alone increased by 31 percent, from 300 million in 2021 to 393 million in 2022. That means millions of people from all over the globe are traveling to other parts of the world to stay in someone’s house, apartment or condo. The owners of those properties have a lot to consider when welcoming travelers who are essentially strangers.

Here are some helpful tips to owning and managing STR properties

to maximize travelers’ experiences as well as your own income potential. Obviously, every situation is different, but here are a few tried and true practices that have worked for other owners.

HOME WARRANTY

Sometimes the thought of a warranty is simply another bill that offers little or no value to a property. However, in your first year or two of owning a STR, you’ll be focused on

your bottom line to determine if this is a viable venture, and it may be easier to budget a single, oftentimes nominal, annual fee rather than unexpected and costly repairs. A major appliance repair before your first guest even checks in is completely possible, even for a newly-purchased property. To have to shell out for a costly service call, parts, etc., before your first reservation payout can be frustrating and make you rethink the short-term rental route. Having something to

term rental

cover those unexpected costs can be comforting.

THINK OF EVERYTHING

OK, so this is probably not a practical or possible approach, but as you manage your property over time, you’ll begin to anticipate the needs of your guests. One way to do this is to stay in your property for a few days and think about the items you need. Short-term rental platforms offer a host of checklists of what guests look

FAR LEFT: Comfortable and functional furniture can add cozy comfort to any shortterm rental.

TOP: Make the most out of any room with fun and comfy decor.

CENTER: Inviting and clean spaces are a must-have for 5-star ratings.

RIGHT Guests often look for updated spaces and appliances.

for, but that extra effort of staying in the property like a guest helps you add your personal touch and added amenities.

“Just a simple thing like having an extension cord by the bed so you can plug in your electronics” is extremely thoughtful, Russell said.

CLEANING SUPPLIES

A vast majority of guests will be apt to keep the space clean and tidy during their visit if they have supplies on hand. Having anticipated cleaning supplies will often benefit your cleaning crew in between reservations. This includes plenty of all-purpose cleaners, degreasers, bleach, sponges, magic erasers, etc. Also consider keeping a rechargeable cordless vacuum on site; just remember to make a note in the house instructions to please place back on the charger after use. Some hosts even leave floor steam cleaners in case one of the guests wants to channel his or her inner-Monica Gellar by leaving the place pristine upon checkout. If you allow pets, keep specialized cleaners and odor-eliminators. Guests will likely manage those issues rather than be slapped with an extra post-stay cleaning fee.

HOUSE INSTRUCTIONS

There are many schools of thought on home instructions. Those rulesdriven hosts who may run a tight ship at home may want to provide a litany of do’s and don’ts, but not many guests like to be confronted with a long list of chores. Some good practices include having the guests take the trash out upon checkout as well as load and start the dishwasher. Some hosts require guests to strip the beds and start a load of laundry prior to checkout, but simply having an extra set or two of linens for each bed can take that chore away from them. Basically, house rules should be welcoming enough to make guests feel at home but also be efficient

in keeping the effort down for this passive-income strategy.

ACCESS AND SECURITY

Florida has very specific laws regarding home surveillance that ultimately benefit STR owners by keeping their properties safe and secure. If you don’t live near your STR property, absolutely consider a robust exterior surveillance system. You must be very clear to your guests about cameras, but explain to them up front these are present for their safety and for the safety of the property. This is an expected practice, so don’t feel as though it will deter reservations. Cameras also benefit hosts with alerts when a guest has arrived or departed. Just be sure to check with state and local laws to ensure you are in compliance.

So how will guests access the property? Generally, a remoteoperated keypad is a great practice because it eliminates the need to keep up with physical keys, which can often be accidentally lost or taken by guests. A best practice is to generate a unique code for every guest to maximize safety. And be sure to check battery life between guests.

COMMUNICATE

So you’re excited about hosting a guest in your STR, and you may feel inclined to check in with things – making sure the air conditioner is working, if the place was clean enough or where to find extra towels. Don’t. A good practice is observing the adage “no news is good news,” because as any STR owner can attest, if something is amiss, you’ll certainly hear about it. That works well when you foster an environment of support by answering questions through the platform app in a timely manner or perhaps leaving a direct phone number for an owner or a property manager. Many STR platforms rank hosts on timeliness of communication because this is a truly vital piece of the hosting

puzzle.

“When you first start, you’re just learning and trying to figure it out. What I’ve done – and I have the results to prove it – is I have several messages go out to them that are automatic through the platform that set the expectations when they arrive as well as when they leave,” said Russell.

She explains to guests very frankly this is her livelihood, yet to always let her know how she can make it a “fivestar stay.”

“I tell them if you have an issue, please let me know right when you find out so your stay is wonderful and you have a great experience,” Russell said.

Perpetual passion for travel

Beverly Vaughn’s conversation about her international travels deep dives into laughter while telling the story about trying to get on a camel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with her husband Tom.

“I couldn’t believe they wanted us on one camel – I kept apologizing to the camel,” said Vaughn, recalling the Al Maha resort offering to soak in a sunset from the iconic sand dunes. “We also went dune bashing. I thought, ‘I am gonna die in the desert.’”

No. The thrilling all-terrain vehicle ride through the majestic environment didn’t end her life more than 7,700 miles from her Gulf Breeze home. Instead, the Bedouin experience had the opposite effect of fueling her gusto to globetrot. Vaughn’s enthusiasm for travel still bubbles over faster than a shaken bottle of Dom Perignon. And she’s been this vivacious for a long time.

“I spent my youth as a military brat, moving constantly,” she said. “From the time I was five years old when we took a Navy carrier from America to Japan via Hawaii, returning to America on my first airline flight aboard Pan Am, I have wanted to see the world.”

And that she has.

“As a young girl in Yokosuka, I experienced my first train ride into Tokyo. I spent the night with the daughter and granddaughter of the admiral who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a goodwill gesture between countries. I left with my own homemade kimono and a desire to learn about other cultures, countries, and experience the world of real travel,” Vaughn said.

While the wanderlust bug bit her early on and her life has always included

travel, Vaughn said she is fortunate that she married a fellow “hodophile” –someone who loves to travel.

“Tom routinely says he wants to ‘Live a Great Story.’ That mantra came from a little sticker we saw on a pole when dancing the night away at Foxy’s Jost Van Dyke while catamaraning the British Virgin Islands with two Pensacola couples.

“Tom and I decided to adopt the ‘Live a Great Story’ line as a reminder of how blessed we are to travel,” Vaughn said. “In doing so, we often remind ourselves that we are ambassadors for our country. We meet people from all walks of life and enjoy spending the time to learn about them, their families, their culture and show them that Americans are gracious, generous people.”

Vaughn said that while there have been many trips with great memories and many lessons learned, it’s not always as glamorous as it may sound.

When she was thirty-two years old, they boarded an older cruise ship. It was their first cruise so they had no other point of reference for the cabin that had a metal wall dividing the twin beds and wall outlets that couldn’t even handle her hair dryer.

“It has never mattered that we had an inside cabin with no port hole or balcony more times than we can count. It was all about the trip, meeting new people aboard the ship and in the ports, seeing the sites and exploring all things new in travel.”

After a thirteen-hour flight to Beijing over two decades ago with their knees almost to their chins, they did realize sometimes you need to upgrade. For that trip, though, it was more than worth it since her husband proposed to her on the Great Wall of China, in Chinese.

“This instilled goals to travel internationally in something other than economy air, in tiny seats with no leg room.”

Since then, Vaughn says their furthest flight to date is more than fifteen hours

in First Class on Emirates, Dubai to JFK.

“Wow! To experience Emirates First Class – you don’t know what you don’t know!”

Vaughn’s Facebook cover page features two more mantras:

I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.

Travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer.

“These two sayings are me and travel in a nutshell, and there is not one form of travel I limit myself to or that is right for everyone,” Vaughn said.

“It can be touring out West to see the Grand Canyon, …admiring the Blue Mountains in Australia… or watching the fountains dance from Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world,” she explained.

No matter what kind of trip it is, there is excitement to be had.

“Each is an adventure where, even just in the planning and execution phase, we can learn a thing or two about what to do or not do in the future. And maybe even where we want to go next!” Vaughn said.

Thirteen years ago, Vaughn retired as the installation business manager for Naval Air Station Pensacola, having spent more than thirty-seven years in the federal government. Husband Tom Vaughn is a certified financial planner/wealth management advisor with Northwestern Mutual. While he has been in this field for over fortythree years, he has no plan to retire and

fortunately has the ability to travel.

With about 60 countries under their travel belts, the Vaughns’ international plans include three long cruises –Iceland/Norway on Viking, Singapore to Hong Kong on Celebrity and Japan on Azamara.

Feeling left behind? Well, don’t stay on the sidelines watching others go, Vaughn advised.

“Make your bucket list, prioritize your travel dreams, do your research or hire a professional travel agent, but go,” Vaughn said. “Whether it’s a weekend to the beach or a trip far away, planning for it is half the fun. And you will get there. Maybe it won’t be tomorrow, but you can dream it into being!”

Laughing, Vaughn added: “See you in the TSA PreCheck line. Oh, wait, that’s another story!”

One travel hacker’s insight

Beverly Vaughn is considered by many to be a clever travel hacker. She admits most of her days do not pass without some travel hacking in mind.

For Vaughn, travel hacking involves signing up for travel credit cards and collecting credit card points, hotel points, and/or airline miles you can cash in for free flights, flight/seating upgrades, priority boarding, upscale hotel stays, trip excursions, and much, much more.

“There are many Facebook pages with award travel advice and courses. There are even award booking services if you don’t want to take the time to learn the points and miles game, as well as real-time flight search engines such as point.me.”

This is significant for several reasons, Vaughn said.

“It has taught me the world of travel hacking and points accrual, introduced me to airlines and flight options that I was totally unfamiliar with, shown me how to stay in glamorous hotels almost free, and connected me with others who love to travel.”

The art of travel hacking is not something you learn overnight, Vaughn stressed. “I use experts, and I still have much to learn.”

First and foremost, if you can’t pay off your credit cards each month, do not get into travel hacking.

VAUGHN’S TIPS FOR TRAVEL HACKING

• Set goals: “My goals are to get free international travel in business or first class, to try all international airlines and cruise lines.”

• Do homework: “This takes a lot of time and is not for everyone.”

• Use professional/expert resources: “On Facebook, I joined Travel Hacking Study Hall hosted by Jackie Sills-Dellegrazie of the globetrottingteacher. com, 10xTravel Insiders and Travel on Point(s). I also use Award Travel 101, award.travel.”

• Choose the best travel credit cards to help you get the most for your money: Vaughn won’t tell you what card to select but says two popular cards are American Express Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve. You can find loads of information online.

• Look at ways to use travel credit cards to build points.: “I put all monthly bills that I know I pay each month on a credit card if I can – everything from utilities to car insurance to groceries, etc.”

Lauren Gund likes to tell people she is still trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up, but the reality is she is doing what she wants to be doing –dabbling in different industries, making each day different, keeping it new and interesting and maintaining flexibility.

Currently she is a graphic designer, property developer and marketing consultant with clients that range from yoga instructors to engineering firms.

“I enjoy helping small businesses succeed and be competitive against the bigger guys,” Gund explained. “I do everything from logo and website design to strategic planning for business development. I try to be a one stop shop for marketing needs.”

When she inherited some money when her mother died, Gund wanted to do something that would make her mom proud, so she purchased land in

North Hill.

She remembers thinking, “What am I doing? I literally just bought dirt.”

Now she owns a development called Hello Desoto at the corner of West Desoto and A Street. Two homes have been completed and two more are planned for later this year.

“It’s the scariest yet most exciting and fulfilling thing I’ve ever done, and I believe this is just the beginning of my real estate journey,” Gund said.

Gund describes her husband, Michael, as “the most incredible man… the yin to my yang, my grounding force, my sounding board, my best friend.”

They have two rescues from the Humane Society: a dog named Luke, and a cat they call Winston. Gund loves Pensacola for all the metro perks – walkability, restaurants, events and the most beautiful beaches around –without the traffic, trash and high taxes

of other metro areas.

“I also love the people here,” she said. “I have met so many incredible humans. They are kind, passionate, generous and driven. They inspire me to be creative, work hard and play harder. They inspire me to give myself to my community the way they do. This is why Pensacola is so great because of the collective giving of a passionate and supportive community.”

Controlling her own business interests allows Gund to be actively engaged in the community.

“I am a proud member of IMPACT 100, which is one of the most incredible organizations and groups of women I have ever seen. I am blessed to serve alongside inspiring women on the board and nearly 1,200 ladies in the community,” she said.

She also loves fashion.

“I love the way an outfit can be an instant confidence boost. There’s so much power in clothing. I feel like you can really get a read on someone by what they choose to wear. It’s not as much about name brands and the latest trends for me. It’s about feeling good and expressing myself. I notice that when I’m in an especially good mood, I wear bright colors. When I’m feeling

down, I gravitate to more blacks and neutrals. Which is all fine! My point is we get to express ourselves through fashion, which is a real gift.”

Gund says she is also her mother’s daughter and loves a good sale!

“Dillard’s and TJ Maxx are my gotos, but I also love all the boutiques we have around town,” she explained. “I own a bunch of neat vintage pieces. Most of them I got from my mom and were passed down generations. A lot is costume jewelry, but I have some special pieces like this gold cameo ring that I always wear. Trends come and go, so it’s most important to choose styles that you love and that flatter your own body.”

Take a cruise along the romantic

Danube

The Danube is Europe’s second longest river and therefore one of its most significant. Often referred to as the “Blue Danube,” it is actually not blue at all – it’s a muddy, brownish green. But Strauss named his famous waltz after a poem written in 1817, and the name stuck. For centuries it has provided a pathway to facilitate trade, war and relaxation.

Originating from the Black Forest in Germany, the Danube touches ten countries (more than any other river in the world), four of which are visited on Viking’s Romantic Danube River Cruise. My sister and I were lucky enough to experience this historic waterway on board a Viking ship and can vouch that it is a very relaxing and educational way to see this part of the world.

BUDAPEST

We began our journey in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Budapest is divided by the Danube River into two distinct areas, Buda and Pest (pronounced Pesht). On the hilly Buda side, we visited the medieval Castle District and Matthias Church and soaked in the panoramic views from Fisherman’s Bastion. Then we crossed

the Chain Bridge to Pest, the bustling heart of Budapest, and were awed by the Gothic Revival style of the Hungarian Parliament building. Did you know that Hungary is the largest producer of paprika in the world? Now you do.

VIENNA

The next stop on our cruise was Vienna – a city that beckons travelers with its imperial palaces, grand boulevards, world-class music and mouthwatering pastries. The Ringstrasse, a grand boulevard encircling the city center, and the famed Hofburg Palace are not to be missed. We admired the Vienna State Opera House and the neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall) and toured the historic stables of the Lipizzaner Stallions. We also toured the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty, and marveled at the Baroque architecture and impeccably manicured gardens.

In our free time, we wandered through Stadtpark, Vienna’s beautiful city park, and were amazed by the floral clock (Unsere Garten).

But hands down, the absolute highlight of our time in Vienna was meeting the Vienna Boys’ Choir, touring their residence, and sitting for a private concert in their parlor. They are from all over the world, ten to fourteen years old, and their voices melted my heart. Their encore song was “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson! It was fascinating to speak with their choirmaster about how they are chosen and the life they lead. And super fun to see them playing basketball like regular kids as we boarded our bus.

BAVARIA

I had never heard of Krems, Austria, but it was worth a stop. Göttweig Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1083, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The imperial staircase is

the largest Baroque staircase in Austria. It is also home to the highest apricot orchard in Austria’s Wachau Valley.

After Krems, we cruised the Danube through the picturesque Wachau Valley with stops in Passau and Regensburg. I highly recommend doing an electric bike tour whenever possible. We e-biked through Bavaria, along the Inn River through farm fields and forests. Biking out of Germany through Passau, we crossed a bridge into Austria through Wernstein. The scenery was stunning. And our e-bike adventure in Prague enabled us to experience cool places we wouldn’t have found on our own, like the Lennon Wall. Be warned, though, biking on ancient cobblestone streets is…ouch.

PRAGUE

After disembarking our Viking ship, my sister and I roamed in Prague for a few days. The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague captivated us with its

rich history and charm. We crossed the iconic Charles Bridge, an architectural marvel adorned with statues and street artists showcasing their talents. The view from the bridge was breathtaking, offering a panorama of the city’s rooftops and the Prague Castle up on the hilltop. We took a tour of the Saint Vitus Cathedral, a symbol of Gothic grandeur. And, of course, we were mesmerized by the famous Astronomical Clock in Old Town – an intricate masterpiece dating back to the 15th century.

One of my favorite memories is dining at a rooftop restaurant overlooking that iconic clock at sunset. It was a magical moment. I’d love to take credit for researching and finding that magical place. But no, we befriended a knowledgeable Viking tour guide and she discreetly told us about the place.

“It’s very small, for locals only, so say very little and be willing to wait two hours for a table,” she advised. “There’s a secret bar in the cellar under the building where you can wait. But the elevator doesn’t go down to it. You just have to look for the old stairs and go down in the dark.”

We acted like we knew what we were doing, found the rickety stairs, and abracadabra, we were in an episode of “Twin Peaks.” In a timeless underground speakeasy, our cocktails arrived in a treasure chest with a coin for us to keep. Our incredibly handsome server sat with us for a bit and asked about our travels. He told us if we returned after midnight, the place would be packed wall to wall with hip, young locals. But luckily for us, at four in the afternoon, he had time to chat.

That’s what I love about travel. Plan, plan, plan. Do the tours with a guide so you can learn all the things. But listen, ask questions, talk to the locals and be willing to go off the beaten path on an adventure. Unplanned adventures often become my favorite memories.

British Virgin Islands SAILING THE

Bravely going where I never thought I could go

I am not beachy. I don’t like “roughing it.” I get seasick.

Seeing “Jaws” and “The Poseidon Adventure” as a kid made me terrified of being on the open water.

So, when my husband and friends decided we should all take a sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands, I was…frankly…horrified. I am a museum hound, not a salty dog! But I knew how much my husband would love it, and I do like challenges, so I climbed aboard the BVI trip planning ship and started mentally preparing for what was going to be the biggest leap of my life.

PLANNING MATTERS

When planning a trip like this – which would take me as far from my comfort zone as from my backyard – it helped to have friends who had done it before. One couple has taken this same trip multiple times, and they know the ropes. He is an experienced sailor, too, a must if you don’t want to hire a captain. The third couple on the trip were novices like us, but game for all possible adventures ahead.

We planned for early March, when the weather would be gorgeous, and it wouldn’t be too crowded. We chartered our 50-foot sail catamaran through The Moorings. I had nightmares about sparse accommodations with no privacy, but our sailboat had four full guest cabins (each with a queen-sized bed and bathroom). I was particularly excited about the air conditioning and fully stocked kitchen. This was perfect for me! Being comfortable is the first step toward being brave, in my book.

Our plan was to have most breakfasts and lunches on the boat, and then go out to dinner every evening,

so we ordered provisions a couple weeks ahead from Rite Way, and they were delivered and waiting for us when we arrived. Before ordering food, my friends and I planned some breakfast and lunch menus and estimated our needs for snacks, bottled water and drinks. With all my trepidation, I think the detailed planning we did beforehand really helped me feel secure about embarking on this trip!

GEARING UP

Okay, I have to be honest. I could have survived with nothing but a bathing suit, a rash guard, a cute coverup doubling as a dress, one pair of flip-flops and that’s it. But that is not how I roll (or fold?), and I overthought, overpacked and over organized. I bought reef-safe sunscreen and ordered snorkel masks and fins. I got a wet bag and a new hat (can’t live without a good hat). I shopped and bought and changed my mind and returned. I realized this was one way I was trying to ease my fears, but even knowing that no amount of proper packing could have saved the Titanic, still I packed.

ENJOYING THE TRIP

While setting out the first morning from the marina, I had the most amazing

physical experience, and it wasn’t seasickness! Pulling out into open water, I felt something I’ve never experienced before. My best description is as if dominoes that were lined up from the crown of my head, down my neck, across my shoulders and down my spine just started falling, one by one, and every bit of tight, balled-up anxiety and stress fell off my bones with them. It was incredible. A relaxed, peaceful feeling set in to take its place, and that lasted the entire week.

We spent the week meandering around the British Virgin Islands, hitting all the big places (see sidebars for highlights) and being sure to squeeze in snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, shopping and eating — lots of eating! But we also just relaxed. As nervous as I was about going, I ended up loving this vacation as much as any I’ve taken. You can’t beat a good museum, historical landmark or Broadway show, but you also can’t knock the pure joy of fresh air, water, a tropical drink and good friends.

I made some concessions along the way to ease my own anxieties. I wore an inflatable snorkel vest (don’t make fun). I stayed on the bow of the boat when we were underway. Fresh air in my face was all I really needed to keep from getting sick. I did not join the guys

in the traditional jumping off the second deck of Willie T’s floating bar. While I am usually a “feet on the ground” type of person, on this trip, I was happy enough with my feet on the boat.

My friends were understanding of my trepidation, and they helped me relax and enjoy myself. And they were fun! A boat full of easy-going pals who love to explore and enjoy all a vacation has to offer makes a huge difference.

There were sights and sounds I experienced that I wouldn’t trade for a million dollars. Sitting on the bow’s pulpit seat while fully under sail, feet dangling in the air above the waves, wind blowing in my hair – just glorious. The plants and trees I saw that I didn’t know existed were spectacular, along with the textures and colors of a place formed from volcanic eruptions, coral and limestone. Everything above and below the surface of the sea was aweinspiring. And waking up to the sounds of goats on Jost Van Dyke mixed with the crashing of waves on rocks? Now that was unexpected!

So, I started out hesitant, scared and anxious, and I came home soothed, calm and refreshed. I am proud of myself for realizing I can do things I am afraid of. I can’t wait for the opportunity to do it again!

BVI ACTIVITIES NOT TO MISS

• Norman Island: Snorkel at The Indians to see breathtaking coral formations and sea life. Kayak in and around The Caves and feel like a pirate looking for booty! Hike up the trail behind Pirates Bight restaurant to the top of the island and take in the spectacular 360-degree view.

• Necker Island: Sail past Richard Branson’s private island (watch the “Branson” documentary first so you know the history).

• Virgin Gorda: Sail over to The Baths, swim into shore (carefully – the water can be rough here) and hike up to the top then back down the other side to explore the boulders. Such amazing evidence of Mother Nature’s power!

• Scrub Island: Spend the night docked at this perfect mid-week stop at a marina with pools, showers (!!!) and a thrilling open-air trolly ride to a beachside Caribbean barbeque, complete with music and performers on stilts. Provisions, breakfast and a fine cappuccino are available at the on-site coffee shop.

• Jost Van Dyke: Moor at Little Harbor and wake up to the sound of goats! Hike to Bubbly Pool and the rocky vistas above. Spend another night at Great Harbor, where you can moor, get provisions and visit several stores, restaurants and bars, including the famous Foxy’s, where you might just find yourself doing a line dance with an entire crew of pirates in costume.

FAVORITE BITES

• The Petite Pump Room next to the ferry terminal in St. Thomas is a great place to wait and have your first rum punches and Caribe beers of the trip. Beautiful views, tasty snacks and lunch dishes will get you in the mood for an island vacation.

• Pirate’s Bight has fantastic special-recipe wings and barbeque ribs, two must-haves while on this trip. They also serve a classic chicken roti and local lobster. There’s a garden behind the restaurant where they grow many fresh ingredients onsite.

• Saba Rock – literally built atop a rock in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda – has an upscale restaurant, shop, nautical museum, and rooms to rent. It was completely rebuilt after the devastation of Hurricane Irma in 2017 and is truly a gorgeous place.

• Foxy’s Taboo sits alone on the uninhabited side of Jost Van Dyke, a little ramshackle hut with a few tables and a surprisingly good menu. As is the case with most beach bars, it’s decorated with stickers from all over the world, and we found many from Pensacola and the rest of Northwest Florida.

• Ali Baba’s restaurant is a fun, quirky, family-owned place to eat great food and get to know some locals. Ali Baba is a legend, and he will show you how to blow into a conch shell (which you can buy onsite). Talk to the chef and ask to try some local rums.

Juneteenth Gala

In honor of the history of Juneteenth (June 19, 1865, when the last slaves were finally freed), many came from near and far to celebrate at this year’s third annual Juneteenth Gala: Celebration of Black Success held at The Historical Museum of Commerce on June 17. In addition to several other supporters and sponsors, Visit Pensacola had in attendance six travelers as a part of the first Juneteenth Familiarization Tour. All attendees enjoyed a gourmet dinner and live entertainment.

The song remains the same her perspective

“Memories, like the corners of my mind…”

Hmmm, the cobwebs of my mind are filled with songs, but not that one. Have you ever noticed when you hear certain songs, they transport you back to a special place and time?

According to a study by Northwestern University, regions of the brain that are involved in musical memory and processing (e.g., the cerebellum) are not as affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia until much later. Many people with Alzheimer’s may struggle to remember certain events or conversations; they might forget the names of loved ones. But despite these impairments, remarkably, they are still able to tap into musical memories long after other types of memory fade. Music can elicit emotions and memories, helping provide a link to a person’s past to promote interconnection with caregivers. Music is a powerful memory cue. Hearing a song that carries importance in your life can elicit vivid memories.

One vivid musical memory takes me back to my childhood in the seventies. My older brother was totally into Led Zeppelin. He had just put the needle down on Led Zeppelin III, track one, and blasted it on our console stereo in the living room. We were rocking out, bobbing our heads, when our dad stormed in and shouted, “That sounds like a dying cat, turn it off!” To this day, whenever I hear “Immigrant Song,” I listen for a dying cat. Now that I am older, I can see where my dad was coming from, although I still love the song. (Dad thought the dying-cat-sounding singer’s name was Led, that still makes me laugh.) I wish my dad could have heard “Tangerine.” That song would have changed his mind about Led.

My dad loved Abba and Barbra Streisand. Therefore, I hated Abba and Barbra Streisand. He wore the grooves out of his copy of Bab’s 1971 album, “Barbra Joan Streisand.” Recently, I randomly heard the song “Space Captain” from that album. I was shocked at how it took me right back to seventh grade, my dad sitting in his black Naugahyde recliner. I listened to the album on Spotify and was amazed that when one song ended, I knew which song came next. She covered John Lennon’s heart wrenching song, “Mother,” on that album, wow. Maybe Dad had better taste than I gave him credit for. Maybe someday I’ll like Abba.

Another seventies song memory involves a song I hate. In

Music Appreciation class, we dissected Diana Ross’s “Theme from Mahogany.” After studying “Do You Know Where You’re Going To,” my conclusion was that it’s the worst song ever written. I still cringe if I hear it and wonder why our codgerly, bespectacled teacher was so into it.

Listening to Cat Stevens used to take me back to my childhood bedroom, my sisters’ music blasting from across the hall. But now when I hear “Father and Son,” all I can think of is the amazing Ted Lasso finale. (And that Cat Stevens sued the Flaming Lips for plagiarizing “Father and Son” in their song “Fight Test” and won. They have to pay his estate 75 percent of all royalties. I’m not a big Cat fan anymore.) But if we’re going to talk about memorable television finale songs, Breaking Bad’s “Baby Blue” is the GOAT. Badfinger has never sounded so good. Thanks to Walter White, I’m a fan “No Matter What.”

Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” will always take me back to childhood summers swimming in the Cordova Park pool. Boston’s “More Than a Feeling” flashes me back to my first kiss. Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life” takes me back to Pensacola Racquet Club’s family night cookouts. Grand Funk Railroad’s Red Album transports me to my brothers’ stinky, cluttered bedroom. “Jackie Blue,” by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, beams me back to my fifth-grade friend’s bedroom. She was allowed to keep her radio on all night. I was not. So, when I spent the night with her, I never slept. That song was on heavy rotation – I heard it like every 45 minutes. To this day, I can’t sleep with music on because I will listen to every song and not sleep.

The first time I heard The Cure I was living in London attending the London School of Economics. Shopping at a flea market, a song was playing that mesmerized me. I asked a mohawked, spiky-collared bloke what he was listening to and he replied, “The Cure – they’re #*&%ing bril.” I bought a bootleg from him. He was right.

I’m so thankful for these musical memories. I hope the research is correct, and I will never forget them. May there be many more memorable musical moments. Oh, how my codgerly, bespectacled music appreciation teacher would love my use of alliteration.
