SURF’S UP FOR FESTIVAL

THE EASTERN BEACHES WILL BE ABUZZ WITH SURFERS THIS MONTH AS THE ANNUAL NOOSA FESTIVAL OF SURFING ROLLS INTO TOWN.

The festival, on from March 3 to 12, will include all manner of events including the premiere of the surfing documentary The Long Road to Grajagan on March 5 from 6pm at the Deus Noosa Store at 15 Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads.

With a history stretching back to the Noosa Malibu Classic longboarding event in 1992, the Noosa Festival of Surfing has evolved to become one of the world’s premier social surfing events, now managed under the

guidance of World Surfaris.

The 10-day event features all manner of surfing competitions, live music, a beach bar and surfboard shaping and art exhibitions as well.

Surfing events are scheduled for First Point, Rivermouth, or Castaways Beach from March 4 to 12, daily from 7am.

The ever popular Surfing Dog Championships are to be held on March 4 from 3pm at First Point, Noosa, and International Women’s Day on March 8 features a Womens Surf Festival from 7am to 11am at the Beach Bar.

DRIFTWOOD ART INTRIGUE CONTINUES

LIKE IT, OR LOATH IT, THE RECENT DRIFTWOOD ART SCULPTURES IN SUNRISE BEACH HAVE SEEN SOME UNUSUAL CHANGES IN RECENT MONTHS

In July 2022, a fairly large creative structure appeared on Sunrise Beach made out of driftwood swept to shore during a period of excessive storms.

It soon served as an imaginative framework for many beach goers.

By day children would turn it into a fort, or castle for their exciting games and by evening

beach goers would take blankets, candles, drinks, food and music and turn it into a Bedouin-like base.

Located in the Sunrise Beach sand dunes this beach structure survived the aggressive storms, tidal surges and multiple weather patterns but at the beginning of the summer

holidays much of it was burnt down, for a suspected beach bonfire.

Only a few poles and scattered charcoal remained until early February this year, when the unscathed wood was dragged down to the beach front and and a solid and wellconstructed beach type shelter was built.

Despite surviving the high tides at full moon, the cyclone surf saw its demise.

The remaining driftwood scattered Sunrise Beach and perhaps, if left to nature’s weather patterns, would have continued driftingbut anonymous beach goer (s) moved the remaining wood, back into the dunes and a new unusual structure was erected.

Creating driftwood beach sculptures requires creativity and skill as working with

irregular shapes and sizes of the wooden pieces.

The process of creating these sculptures can be time-consuming, requiring patience, strength and dedication.

Sculptures can take on a variety of forms of abstract designs and patterns and often created to blend in with the natural surroundings or stand out as a focal point.

With many beach wood sculptures regularly created along our beaches, the fascination of the temporary art form and simplicity and impermanence simply adds to the appeal, making them more unique and special.

The evolving driftwood sculptures at Sunrise Beach have been intriguing to many and a wonderful conversation starter.

DIGITAL HUB UPGRADES ON WAY

Finding new ways to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies will be among the many challenges to be tackled at the Peregian Digital Hub’s lab facilities when they open at the old Peregian Community House in the coming months. The upgrade has been funded by the Federal Government’s bushfire recovery grants program.

How to protect and preserve the 11.5km of beach between Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach and the 122ha of bushland reserves that go with it is up for consideration with Noosa Council’s draft Eastern Beaches Foreshore Management Plan. The plan aims to improve the ecosystem of the health of these areas and ensure the foreshore and dunes continue to protect the region’s coastal communities from storm surges and erosion. APPLICATION IN FOR SQUARE SPACE

Fans of Peregian Square will be watching closely as the builders move into renovate and extend the commercial building at 214 David Low Way that is home to a number of stores, including Mensroom. The plans, which have passed through Council, will see the site reconfigured to have two shopfronts facing David Low Way, another three tenancies converted for a food and drink outlet and a new floor added above to include office space and a small food and drink outlet overlooking Peregian Square.

HOW DO WE IMPROVE OUR WASTE?

The search for more sustainable solutions when it comes to waste management is ongoing. The Council have released statistics that indicate the current landfill site at Noosa produces enough methane gas to potentially power 5,000 homes. It is running a survey to gather community feedback on other ideas that may reduce the reliance on landfill cells in the future, including the potential introduction of a bin for organic food waste. MARCH MARKETS AT PEREGIAN

The ever popular Peregian Beach Markets are held on the first and third Sunday of every month, meaning for March, March 5 and March 19, and April, April 2 and April 16. The markets are hosted at the park near the surf club from 7.30am to 12.30am and feature all manner of handmade goods, some fresh food, food trucks, live music and a sausage sizzle or brekky burger fundraiser for the local surf club’s Nippers program. There have been some changes in ‘community think’ with decriminalisation of cannabis and the reduction of commercial fishing licenses seeing a decline in percentages.

There was also a consistent majority of nearly 80% seeking an end to political parties and MP’s data harvesting from postal vote applications, and utilising constituent details to campaign via text, email and ‘robo calls’.

TALES OF LESS COMPLICATED TIME

SUNSHINE COAST AUTHOR PATTY BEECHAM DUG INTO HER CHILDHOOD GROWING UP IN ROCKHAMPTON FOR HER LATEST BOOK.

When the dreaded COVID lockdowns hit in 2020 poet and author Patty Beechman set herself a task.

"I determined to publish three books. I knew two of them would be poetry (simply to keep my vast collection all together) and I wasn't sure what the third would be," Beecham said.

"Someone had tagged me on a Facebook group called Rockhampton Remember."

Beecham said she responded by writing a couple of stories about her dad, Canon John Warby OAM, who, as a local Anglican priest, had presided over the marriages of a lot of the members of the Facebook group.

The response prompted the decision to turn the focus on to her own early years and the novel - Growing Up, Rocky: A Rockhampton Childhood was born.

"This is the book that the Facebook Group 'Rockhampton: Remember When' encouraged me to write," Beecham says.

"Without their gentle and persistent encouragement, this book would never have been written.

"These stories are the skipping stones of my life. A little from here and there, until the end is reached. Think of this book like a patchwork quilt, with stories and timelines gently overlapping.”

Beecham grew up living within the five Aboriginal tribes of Cape York, and Rockhampton and Central Queensland.

“This my story of an innocent childhood in a fractured family as we learn to live with each other, only to be torn apart after a tragic accident," she said.

"It's a Coming-of-Age story with my dad, Canon John Warby, OAM, as a community leader and Anglican priest.

"It's a look back in time and reminiscing of a

softer, kinder world, dealing with the changing world of the '70s, and growing up in a small country town.

"It's a story of survival, overcoming bullies, and bringing myself up. It’s an Every Woman’s story."

The story begins in the early 1960s with the family living on the Lockhard River Mission.

The remote lifestyle meant Patty's three siblings were only home for about six weeks a year, spending the majority of their time away at boarding school - in fact it was only when she was four that her whole family lived together.

As society changes, television arrives, and the Pill, so does the dynamic of Patty's family who tragically face the unthinkable with the unexpected death of Patty's younger brother just days before a family wedding.

It captures the life of a girl whose Mum, Bunty Warby, ran the local corner shop in Keppel Sands while her father presided over a local congregation and all the events that went with that role.

Beecham says she has been overwhelmed by the local support for the book.

She sold out of her first run of 350 copies in just 10 days and is now well into the second print run, with the book available locally at Annie's Books at Peregian Beach, at Rosetta Books at Maleny or online at www. pattybeechamproductions.com

IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN HEARING LOSS AND OVERALL HEALTH?

THE

SIMPLE ANSWERS IS, YES.

Our ability to hear is one of our primary senses and thus has consequences for our broader social, physical, and mental health. When we lose our hearing, our overall health can be compromised.

We often lose our hearing gradually over time, and it can be difficult to appreciate how much our hearing enriches so many aspects of our lives.

Deidré Breytenbach, principal audiologist at Noosa's only independent, locally owned and operated hearing clinic, Noosa Hearing, says, "The hearing loss journey usually takes about seven years before someone gets help."

"Hearing loss is often the last thing on a person's list of health challenges as it is not life-threatening and easy to ignore. But being proactive with your hearing health is the key," Deidré says.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH RISKS OF HEARING LOSS?

Communication is an important foundation for any good relationship.

When your hearing declines, that foundation can be compromised. This commonly results in misunderstandings, frustration, and feelings of being ignored. Most significantly, hearing loss can influence some people to avoid social situations. In turn, this may affect their mental well-being and create an unhealthy situation of loneliness and isolation.

According to Professor Frank Lin from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the US, hearing loss has also been linked to cognitive decline.

A study in the US found that those with hearing loss experienced a 30-40 percent faster decline in cognitive function than those with normal hearing.

"Our results show that hearing loss should

not be considered an inconsequential part of aging because it may come with some serious long-term consequences to healthy brain functioning," Prof Lin says.

He also found that hearing loss increased the risk of falls.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO RIGHT NOW?

It's quite simple. If you think you have a hearing loss or want to establish a baseline, it's important to book a comprehensive, diagnostic hearing test.

"Everyone over 55 should have their hearing tested," Deidré recommends. A hearing test is the first step to helping your hearing, communication, and relationships.

Director Simon Denver says Les Femmes Sur La Mer explores this flux from a female perspective, theatrically examining the role of women in modern day society.

Let’s face it – our “norms” are crumbling and being redefined as we speak, from gender politics to equal pay, equal representation to the tearing down of stereotypes – life is changing very quickly.

Audiences are expected to walk away having participated in a show that might prick your conscience, touch a nerve, tickle you, slap you . Then make you laugh, feel you've been beaten up, cause you to think, make you laugh even more, cry a little, then beat you up again .. and then cuddle you afterwards.

“Les Femmes Sur La Mer” features some of the finest female talent on the Sunshine Coast, who will sing and dance a fabulous collection of songs written over the last 30 years and will be accompanied by live musicians - Darren Heskes on keyboard and Murray Wall on Guitar.

COUNCIL HAS FOXES ON THE RUN

NOOSA COUNCIL HAS JOINED FORCES WITH THE STATE GOVERNMENT, OTHER COUNCILS AND ENVIRONMENT GROUPS TO STEP FOX PATROLS FROM PEREGIAN BEACH TO MAROOCHYDORE IN A BID TO REDUCE DAMAGE TO NATIVE WILDLIFE.

From March 27, Council officers and wildlife officers will be targeting known fox haunts, particularly along the coast, coinciding with one of the more active seasons for the animals.

The autumn trapping season uses softcatch foothold traps placed across selected bushland and private properties, which are checked daily, or continously by cameras.

The European red fox was deliberately introduced into Australia for recreational hunting in 1855 and has been recognised as a signficant contributor to native animal decline across the nation.

Maria Suarez said the latest program would offer some protection for native species.

"Foxes pose a serious threat to unhatched turtle eggs and threaten species such as the endangered Mary River turtle, and green and loggerhead sea turtles," Cr Suarez said.

"They're also a threat to our livestock and domestic animals - especially chickens". The trapping program will be coordinated between Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care and Noosa Council.
