NEW EDITOR, SAME TRUSTED COMMUNITY PUBLICATION, KEEPING THE COMMUNITY INFORMED WITH THE LATEST LOCAL NEWS

I am delighted to take this moment to introduce myself to you. My name is Darren, and I'm thrilled to be the new Editor of Eastern Beaches News. It's an incredible privilege to be following in the footsteps of Geoff and Rebecca, and I can't wait to continue their fantastic work in serving this amazing community.

A little bit about me: –

I reside in Peregian with my beautiful family – my gorgeous wife, and two incredibly energetic preschoolers. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to live here.

What an incredibly stunning stretch of the Coast. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous, the walks are scenic, and the lookouts are breathtaking.

However, what truly sets this community apart is its people. Witnessing the remarkable way everyone came together during the bushfires was inspiring, and I am so honoured to be part of a publication that reflects the heart and soul of this beautiful community.

I look forward to working alongside you, to keep Eastern Beaches News thriving, and to keep celebrating all the amazing things that make this place a true slice of heaven.

I am open to receiving feedback on both previous and current content. Your thoughts and insights are valuable to me as they aid in the readership.

If there are particular topics or areas that you feel require our attention, please do not hesitate to share them with me. Your input is greatly appreciated and will assist me in providing more informative and engaging content.

I would like to express my deep gratitude to the community for their unwavering support of our advertisers, as their support is integral to the sustainability and continued success of our community news publication.

Wishing a very happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms out there, including those who have given birth, those who have adopted, and those who have stepped in as a mother figure.

Your love, care, and sacrifices make the world a better place, and we are grateful for everything you do. May your day be filled with joy, love, and appreciation for all that you are and all that you do.

Warmest Regards,

.... and finishing line. Many Noosa Masters swimmers have recently returned from state championships with a hoard of medals and 25 state and national records. Competition between locals and visitors in the event will be fierce!

The Noosa Masters club has 80 members, with many competing in pool and open water swimming events around Australia. By volunteering at Runaway Noosa and the Noosa Triathlon, the club raises funds needed to pay coaches and to host an annual swim meet that attracts around 150 competitors from 20 or more clubs.

Based at the Noosa Aquatic Centre, the club welcomes swimmers over the age of 18, with most members currently aged from 50 to over 80 with the pool sessions run by coaches focusing on fitness, technique and

endurance. Without the commitment local volunteer organisations such as The Noosa Masters Swim Club bring to local events, they would not be the success that they are.

Runaway Noosa is a part of the Runaway Marathon Series, which has hand-picked the most stunning destinations in New Zealand, Hawkes Bay and Queenstown as well as Sydney and Noosa here in Australia.

Those who compete at all four will receive an exclusive MVP, (Most Valuable Player) award. For information on volunteering at Runaway Noosa please visit the Runaway Noosa website.

For information on Noosa Masters Swim Club, please email noosamastersswimming@ outlook.com or visit the NAC on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Sunday mornings from 7am to 9am.

FLIGHT PATH REVIEW COMPLETED

HONORING OUR VETERANS

Thank you to all including volunteers, students and attendees for an incredibly moving Anzac Day honouring our fallen veterans, with the largest gatherings across our electorate we have ever seen. We will always remember.

FLIGHT PATH CONSULTATION

The consultation period for the Air Service’s Post Implementation Review of flight paths has now been completed. Even though in the Federal Government realm, last week we prepared a Noosa 360(www.SandyBolton. com/Noosa360) summary with points relevant to our community.

TEEWAH AIRSTRIP FEEDBACK

The Department of Environment and Science is seeking feedback until 12 May on the future of the Teewah Airstrip, with further information at www.SandyBolton. com/Teewah-Airfield-April-2023. This site has been utilised by community including for evacuations during fires. Option one is to transfer wholly to National Park tenure, withoption two to transfer the majority to National Park and retain the cleared landing area (approximately 10%) as Landing Ground Reserve or some other form of appropriate tenure for community use.

REVIEWING VICTIM SUPPORT

In Parliament amongst many other speeches, I made a Private Members Statement regarding our ongoing efforts to improve committee processes, to address both old and new failings to get the best outcomes. With my Legal Affairs and Safety Committee being tasked with reviewing support for victims of crime, which is an enormous body of work, the eight weeks given doesn’t do justice to victims and their families. After unsuccessfully seeking leave for this to be debated in

Chamber and writing to the Committee Legislative Assembly, I am more determined than ever to get this review of our systems done and await the response to my latest requests!

CLASSIC HARMONY TO THE EARS

BUCKLE UP FOR A BURST OF CLARINET BRILLIANCE

It is very rarely that the audience of a classical performance shouts, whistles, and claps for well over a minute.

The audience of a recent concert reacted this way to the sublime clarinet virtuosity of Sacha McPhee-Gibbs.

Sacha is an active soloist, chamber musician, and freelance orchestral player. His international career has seen him perform with world class conductors, soloists and orchestras.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sacha studied at the University of Queensland, where he interned with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, graduating in 2016. Sacha was awarded their Top Performance Prize in his final year. He was then able to do a Masters Degree at London's Royal Academy.

While there Sacha was selected to represent the Academy in solo and chamber performances around the country, as well as being the principal clarinetist in the Academy Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra. Upon leaving there Sacha played with prominent orchestras in Europe.

Sacha is now presenting a very special

concert of some of his favourite pieces for audiences on the Sunshine Coast.

Accompanied by Naomi Campbell on the piano, Sacha will play his Fruitful Fantasies.

I recently heard Sacha play in a concert at Wurtula, and was completely transported by the brilliance of his playing.

It is very rarely that you have the privilege of hearing such astonishing virtuosity in an intimate setting.

Here in Noosa Shire Sacha Sacha will present his Fruitful Fantasies at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on June the 4th at 3pm.

To book tickets for this concert go to https:// www.themajestictheatre.com.au/

Tickets are $35 / $30 concessions.

ROYAL QUEENSLAND WINE AWARDS

AUSTRALIA’S BEST PINOT NOIR PRIZE VALUE IS CERTAINLY SET TO PLEASE

Dad was passionate about not only wine but wine education,” he said.

“It gave him true enjoyment to be able to see people appreciate wine at every level.

“I know our father will be honoured to be remembered and represented by this trophy and the furthering of the winner’s wine education.”

The competition also offers a $12,000 fellowship for the wine judged Australia’s best, with the funds to be used by the winemaker for education, travel and training.

The RQWA is the first capital city wine show

A new incentive for Australian winemakers of Pinot Noir has boosted the prize pool at the Royal Queensland Wine Awards (RQWA) to almost $20,000.

The recipient of the Dr Bill Ryan Best Pinot Noir of Show trophy will now also receive a $5,000 prize to be used for wine or travel.

It has been introduced by Andrew and Michael Ryan, as part of the award that honours their late father who had been involved with the RQWA for more than two decades, serving almost 15 of those years as Chair of the competition.

Bill was also a leading Queensland orthopaedic surgeon and co-founder of winery Summit Estate on the Granite Belt. He had a love for Pinot Noir, making regular visits to its homeland of Burgundy in east-central France.

Michael Ryan said his family was pleased to now provide a $5,000 prize to the winner of the Dr Bill Ryan Best Pinot Noir of Show trophy.

LAND VALUATION INCREASES

MAYOR PUTS FORWARD SOLUTIONS FOR BETTER DEAL ON LAND VALUATIONS

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart says she was disappointed with the outcome of her meeting with Queensland’s Natural Resources Minister where she raised residents’ concerns about massive land valuation increases.

Picture for media releaseNoosa Mayor Clare Stewart and Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig ventured to Brisbane to meet Minister Scott Stewart to discuss the unprecedented consecutive land valuation increases.

“Many in our community are still recovering from the devastating 2022 flood events so we put forward a few suggested solutions seeking the process to be reviewed to improve outcomes for councils and the community,” she said.

“This could involve the state collaborating closer with local councils on decisions to proceed with valuations and taking into account unprecedented situations impacting land valuations.”

Cr Stewart and Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig ventured to Brisbane last week to meet Minister Scott Stewart to discuss the unprecedented consecutive land valuation increases.

As land valuations are used by councils to calculate rates in Queensland, councillors and residents are concerned about the impact the doubling of valuations in some part of the shire will have.

“The Minister made it clear that there wasn’t much that could be done, however I encourage residents who feel aggrieved to lodge an objection to the Queensland Valuer Generals Office,” Cr Stewart said.

“It doesn’t make sense why we had to face another round of land valuations, particularly with the added pressure of the valuation occurring in an extremely volatile market.

“With the softening of property demand

being experienced in the area, the state may need to subsequently reverse some of these increases in future years, indicating these increases may not have been necessary this year,” Cr Stewart said.

The average land valuation increase determined by the Queensland Valuer-General was 62 per cent.

But nearly 2000 properties across Noosa were hit with an increase in valuation above 100 per cent, a further 400 had a 200 per cent jump and 15 properties are above 300 per cent.

About 2000 properties in Noosa had a comparatively low valuation increase of under 30 per cent.

“It’s not just owners of properties in the more expensive areas facing increases, it’s homeowners right across the shire who have seen their land valuations jump,” Mayor Stewart said.

Cr Stewart said like the community, council is working in a heightened market with CPI at record levels.

“We are facing enormous challenges to keep rates increases below CPI levels and these valuations present even more difficulties for us to ensure equitable rating outcomes for every single property experiencing a valuation increase,” she said.

MAGNIFICENT BAROQUE ON SHOW

BACH'S MIGHTY MAGNIFICAT IS RETURNING TO THE STAGE IN NOOSA

Five years ago Noosa Chorale performed JS Bach’s Magnificat to a packed and enthusiastic audience at The J Theatre.

Now it aims to repeat that success in May by not only presenting the memorable music again but adding two other Magnificats—one by Antonio Vivaldi and the other by Bach’s son, Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach.

Chorale president Fran Wilson said the concert at The J on May 26 and 27 would also feature a baroque orchestra and five impressively talented Queensland soloists, one of whom is Queensland soprano Annika Hinrichs who sang at the 2018 concert.

“The others include baritone Leon Warnock who has also sung previously with us, soprano Jolanta Kudra, mezzo soprano Morgan Rosati and tenor Sebastian Maclaine.

"Sebastian has been a member of the popular Australian group, The Ten Tenors, performing in 16 countries.”

Fran said there was another connection to The Ten Tenors, this time with the Chorale’s guest conductor, Kim Kirkman who is a former co-owner, music director and performer of the group.

“There are countless hundreds of musical settings of the Magnificat, and a magnificent variety of styles and moods across the choral versions of this work.

“The three chosen by the Chorale are amongst the best known and most frequently performed today.

“They each reveal a variety of moods across the movements, and each makes significant demands of virtuosity from the soloists, choristers, and instrumentalists."

Fran said singing choral music from the baroque period was challenging and rewarding.

She said the music was often fast-paced and complex, with vocal parts interweaving, and the whole effect is dynamic and emotive.

“We are thrilled to be singing with such talented soloists and orchestra," Fran said.

"Working with such professionals really inspires a choir.

“Next year is our 30th anniversary of our founding by Noosa barrister Joe McMahon and we have had many blockbuster performances in that time.

“Magnificat” in May will be among the best of them.” *******************************************

HOW TO HIT BETTER IRON SHOTS

DO YOU OFTEN FIND YOURSELF HITTING THE FAIRWAY, SETTING UP A PERFECT SHOT TO THE GREEN, AND THEN MISSING THE MARK WITH YOUR IRON SHOT? HERE ARE THREE SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP YOU MAKE CRISP CONTACT EVERY TIME.

Step 1: Use your body, not your hands. To achieve strong and crisp contact, learn to turn using your big muscle groups, such as your legs and chest. This allows you to create more time, compression, and power. Relying solely on your hands to control the club requires perfect timing every time, which can lead to inconsistency.

Step 2: Pay attention to your ball position. Recognise where your club makes contact with the ground. For most players, the ball is struck better when positioned forward of centre in relation to their feet. This allows you to hit through the ball towards your target.

Step 3: Finish with your weight on your lead leg. At the end of your shot, your follow-through should leave you holding 90% to 100% of your weight on your lead leg. This means you’ve transferred your weight through the strike, putting the most amount of force into the ball as possible. With a little effort and dedication, you can start hitting better iron shots and taking your game to the next level.

Happy golfing
