La quinta edición de Peruvian Magazine mira hacia arriba. Cruza las fronteras nacionales para llegar a La Paz, capital boliviana que se descubre mejor en teleférico, dando cara a sus montañas. La revalorización de la cultura andina y la bonanza económica han resultado, al día de hoy, en una ciudad moderna que celebra su legado e historia. También en Bolivia está el desierto más alto del mundo, que no es un desierto propiamente dicho, sino el vestigio de dos antiguos lagos. Ese es solo uno de los misterios y contradicciones del salar de Uyuni, un hallazgo turístico para el país altiplánico.

The fifth edition of Peruvian Magazine looks toward the heights. It moves across national borders to get to La Paz, Bolivian capital that can be better seen in a cable car, facing its mountains. The reappraisal of the Andean culture and the economic upturn have lead, to this day, to a modern city that celebrates its heritage and history. Moreover, in Bolivia you can find the highest desert in the world, which is not a proper desert, but the remains of two ancient lakes. That is merely one of the mysteries and contradictions of the Salar de Uyuni, a touristic finding for the altiplanic country.

De vuelta en el Perú, subimos por la costa norte hasta descubrir, en la vertiente de la cordillera Occidental, los cerros y bosques secos de la Reserva Ecológica de Chaparrí, una de las zonas con mayor biodiversidad de la Tierra. Amparada por sus algarrobos y cactus gigantes, su clima constante y su aislamiento en el departamento de Lambayeque, se ha formado la comunidad de osos andinos más grande del continente americano, y se recupera la pava aliblanca, especie en peligro. Durante el mes de octubre, Lima se viste de morado y eleva un himno nazareno, buscando el milagro en el rostro moreno de Cristo, ese que, según la mística popular, sigue en pie tras cualquier temblor (telúrico o espiritual). El culto al Señor de los Milagros llena de sahumerio las calles limeñas, y así quiere elevarse también esta edición. ¡A tomar vuelo!

Once back in the Peru, we climbed along the north coast to discover, on the slopes of the West Andes, the hills and dry forests of the Chaparri Ecological Reserve, one of the most biodiversity-rich areas on Earth. Protected by its carob trees and giant cacti, its constant climate and its isolation in the Department of Lambayeque, the largest community of Andean bears in the Americas has been established, and recovers the white-winged Guan, an endangered species. During the month of October, Lima is dressed in purple and raises a Nazarene hymn, looking for a miracle in the face of the dark-skinned Christ, that one, that according to the popular mystique still stands after any tremor (telluric or spiritual). The Lord of Miracles worship fills Lima streets with incense, and so this edition wants to get higher. Get ready for take-off!

Primero, “obtener un 20% extra de tráfico en la web de la aerolínea”, para lo cual relanzaron la página bajo un formato responsive que permitiera a los usuarios realizar la búsqueda, reserva y el pago de sus pasajes desde smartphones en cualquier lugar del mundo. En segundo lugar, buscaron “entregarle al usuario una mejor calidad de navegación en la web y asegurar que la compra de pasajes se realizara de manera rápida, sencilla y segura”. En ambos casos, los resultados han sido positivos, pues superaron la primera meta en menos de tres meses, mientras que la venta de pasajes online creció en un 13% desde comienzo de año. El punto crucial de esta pequeña revolución interna en PA ha sido el acercamiento a los pasajeros, para el cual desarrollaron una estrategia de marketing digital que implicó un mejor manejo de redes sociales y buscadores tradicionales. La creación de Peruvin y ZoylaLlama, dos personajes ficticios que animan su social media, es una muestra de ello; así, mientras Peruvin se encarga de difundir buenas prácticas de compra online, ZoylaLlama es el rostro de los concursos y las promociones de la aerolínea.

Los resultados no se han hecho esperar: la mejora en la comunicación con los clientes y el crecimiento de la comunidad de PA en Facebook a 100,000 seguidores así lo señalan. El siguiente paso, comenta Sebasthian Justo, “es que el 60% de los pasajes sean comprados a través de la página web”. Y, tal como van las cosas, falta poco para que lo logren. objectives. The next step, says Sebasthian Justo, “is that 60% of the tickets are purchased through the website”. Thus, with things going as they are, it will not be long before they succeed.

Esta inestabilidad terrestre ha influenciado no solo la cotidianeidad limeña, sino también la fe de sus habitantes. Por algo el culto al Señor de los Milagros, o Señor de los Temblores, es tan extendido.

También llamado Cristo Moreno, el Señor de los Milagros es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los íconos religiosos más populares del Perú. El mito cuenta que esta imagen milagrosa, pintada por un esclavo angoleño en el santuario de Las Nazarenas durante el siglo XVII, sobrevivió en 1655 a un terrible terremoto que no dejó piedra sobre piedra. La legendaria imagen es movilizada, entre humo de sahumerios y oraciones entrecortadas, por 20 cuadrillas de “cargadores” que se turnan el honor de sostener sobre sus hombros los 1700 kg de peso del anda. Lo acompaña la Virgen de la Nube en el reverso del lienzo, advocación ecuatoriana inspirada por una aparición de la Virgen en las nubes en 1696. Se trata pues, de dos imágenes milagrosas en una. A nivel cromático, el morado domina el rito. Ese color simboliza la fe y la devoción, y es herencia directa de las nazarenas. Así, mientras el cardumen de purpúreos creyentes desparrama rezos por las avenidas, los comerciantes venden anticuchos, estampitas y el clásico turrón de doña pepa. Y es que la historia de Josefa Marmanillo, “Doña

Pepa”, constituye el milagro más famoso del Cristo Moreno: enferma de parálisis, se dice que fue curada por la imagen y que, en agradecimiento, le inventó el postre milagroso. Ya son 42 años sin que un terremoto remeza Lima, la capital más tectónica del hemisferio sur, y es válido preguntarse si, más allá de las preferencias religiosas, no será útil levantar una plegaria al Señor de los Temblores para pedirle que mantenga serena la tierra. Basta con seguir el Himno Nazareno: “Señor de los milagros / aquí venimos en procesión / tus fieles devotos / a implorar tu bendición”. Por si acaso, ¿no?... nunca se sabe.

Thus, while hundreds of thousands of purple believers spread their prayers through the streets, vendors sell anticuchos, holy cards and the classic Turron de Doña Pepa (sweetmeat, made up of layers of flour, topped with molasses honey and candies). The point is that the story of Josefa Marmanillo, “Doña Pepa”, is the most famous miracle of Cristo Moreno: she was suffering from a paralysis in her arms, and it is said that she was cured by the image and to express her thankfulness, she created for Him this miraculous dessert. It has been 42 years now without any earthquake hitting Lima, the most tectonic capital in the Southern Hemisphere, and it is valid to ask whether, beyond any religious preferences, it would not be useful to raise a prayer to the Lord of Earthquakes to ask Him to keep the Earth serene. Simply follow the Hymn of the Nazarene: “Lord of Miracles / here we come in procession / your faithful devotees / to implore your blessing”. Just in case, isn’t it? … You never know.

En los últimos 20 años, como producto de la efervescencia andina y la bonanza económica, La Paz se ha transformado en una ciudad moderna y de contrastes con un legado vivo quechua, español y aymara que la convierte en un destino único en el mundo. In the last 20 years, as result of the Andean effervescence and the economic upswing, La Paz has become a modern city and of contrasts with an alive Quechua, Spanish and Aymara legacy, that makes it a unique destination in the world. Nestled in the Andes, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and traversed by three lines of public cable cars, is currently a diverse, fascinating and economic destination that offers a wide variety of attractions.

Ciudad colonial En La Paz se contraponen dos herencias culturales: la andina y la hispana. La arquitectura es fiel testimonio de esta ambivalencia, presentando en simultáneo edificaciones serranas contemporáneas y un núcleo colonial -el centro- con hitos arquitectónicos como la Basílica de San Francisco. Este templo católico, levantado entre los siglos XVI y XVIII bajo la advocación de San Francisco de Asís, es una de las mejores muestras de barroco mestizo en la ciudad.

Colonial City In La Paz two cultural inheritances are contrasted: the Andean and the Hispanic. The architecture is faithful testimony of this ambivalence; it offers simultaneously contemporary highland buildings and a colonial core –center– with architectural milestones such as the Basilica of Saint Francis. This Catholic Temple, built between the 16th and 18th centuries consecrated to St. Francis of Assisi, is one of the best samples of the Mestizo Baroque style in the city.

In the Centre is Plaza Murillo, built in 1558 at the request of the chief magistrate Ignacio Arana. This centuries-old square marks ‘zero-mile’ in La Paz and is an excellent place to apply the Andean dolce far niente. Nearby is Jaen Street, magic and one of the oldest of the capital city. This traditional alley, crammed with balconies, pubs, cafes and museums –Pedro Murillo Museum and the Precious Metals Museum– keeps to this very day the colonial elegance.

Otro atractivo ideal para aventureros son el Valle de las Ánimas y el Valle de la Luna, dos alucinantes desiertos de estalagmitas. Ubicados a 4 y 10 km de la ciudad, respectivamente, estos impresionantes accidentes geológicos están compuestos por rocas erosionadas que apuntan al cielo como gigantescas agujas de piedra, regalando al visitante paisajes extraterrestres. Menos conocido es el misterioso Camino a Los Yungas, también llamado Carretera de la Muerte. Se trata de 80 km de trocha que unen La Paz con Los Yungas, con rumbo al norte tropical de Bolivia. Esta escarpada ruta, labrada literalmente entre el cerro y el cielo, es un paraíso para los ciclistas de montaña. La altura, fluctuante entre los 3600 y los 5000 metros, la hace no apta para cardiacos. Es imposible resumir en tan poco espacio una ciudad múltiple e intensamente viva como La Paz; a lo sumo, estos son tan solo apuntes, direcciones para que el viajero escuche su intuición y explore el maravilloso mundo mestizo que oculta la capital más alta del mundo.

Potosi, for instance, at only 25km, is one of the favorite destinations of mountaineers, hikers and climbers. Its name means “Young Mountain” and with its 6088 meters height is one of the most visited mountains of the Cordillera Real. Other interesting attractions for adventurers are the Valle de las Ánimas (Valley of the Spirits) and the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), two amazing stalagmites deserts. Located at 4 and 10km away from the city, respectively, these impressive geological features are composed of eroded rocks pointing to the sky like giant needles of stone, giving the visitor extraterrestrial landscapes. Less known is the mysterious road to Los Yungas, nicknamed “Death Road”, a 50 miles dirt trail linking La Paz - Los Yungas, heading north into Bolivia’s Tropical Sector. This rugged route, literally carved between the hill and the sky, is a paradise for mountain bikers. Height, ranging between 3600 and 5000 meters, makes it nonapt for people with heart problems. It is impossible to summarize in so little space such a multiple and intensely alive city like La Paz; at best, these are just notes, tips for travelers to use their insights and explore the wonderful mestizo world that the highest capital in the world hides.

La fiesta reunió a clowns de todo el mundo, que lo recorren para que su labor social alcance a más personas. Aventura de la ruta. Rafo León hizo de su pasión una profesión, y hoy conduce el programa de televisión “Tiempo de viaje”. Adventure of the route. Sus periplos por carretera empezaron cuando cursaba la universidad. Llegar por tierra de Trujillo a Piura implica tomar la carretera Panamericana Norte. Sin embargo, comenta el viajero, lo bello del viaje está en lo que reside paralelo a la vía pavimentada. Allí se descubrirán valles, pueblos, sitios arqueológicos, caletas de pescadores e islas. A Rafo, en lo particular, le gusta recorrer los caminos que llevan más al este, a la parte sierra de Trujillo: a Santiago de Chuco, Vallejo o Cahicadán. Si se va por la costa del norte grande, agrega, no debe dejar de visitarse el valle de Nepeña. Allí se encuentra una ciudadela pre inca por explorar, y también un sitio arqueológico llamado Puncurí. Lo infaltable en todo viaje por tierra, además de artículos de cuidado y aseo personal, como cremas para proteger la piel, pasta dental sin aroma, y una colonia suave de bebé, es llevar un amuleto. En su caso: una flauta moche o un hueso de venado tallado con las figuras de una iguana y un dios degollador. Consejo personal del viajero: nunca confiarse del medio tanque, hay que andar siempre tanqueado. Y luego solo empezar a manejar.

Su aridez no debe confundir: los bosques secos estacionales del noroeste del Perú se encuentran entre los de mayor biodeversidad en el mundo. En el departamento de Lambayeque, a solo 70 km de Chiclayo, la riqueza de Chaparrí se descubre entre algarrobos, palo santos y cactus gigantes. Seco, caluroso y soleado de día, por las tardes se baña con un viento fresco. Para los antiguos Moches, Chaparrí era una montaña sagrada. You should not be puzzled for its aridity: the Seasonal Dry Forests of northwest Peru is one of the most biodiversity-rich in the world. In the department of Lambayeque, only 70 km away from Chiclayo and at the heart of carob and Palo Santo trees, and giant cactus you can distinguish the wealth of Chaparri. Dry, hot and sunny at midday, but in the evenings it receives a bath of fresh wind. For the ancient Moche, Chaparri was a sacred mountain. La Reserva de Chaparrí es la primera Área de Conservación Privada del Perú, título que recibió en el 2001. Esta experiencia es pionera en el país en más de un sentido: fue también la primera vez que una comunidad campesina entregó su terreno para la conservación de la naturaleza. La reserva es propiedad de la comunidad campesina Santa Catalina de Chongoyape, que cedió más de treinta y cuatro hectáreas; aún más, es la propia comunidad que se ha encargado de protegerlas. Y lo más especial, quizás, es que esta coexistencia armoniosa ha conseguido que poblaciones de especies en peligro se recuperen: al día de hoy, Chaparrí guarece a la población más densa de osos andinos (también conocidos como osos de anteojos) en Sudamérica, con cuarenta osos avistados, y casi un tercio de la población total en vida silverstre de la pava aliblanca, con casi cien ejemplares. Explica su director, el fotógrafo y naturista peruano Heinz Plengue, que la comunidad campesina ha descubierto en esta labor los beneficios de las actividades económicas sostenibles. Es así que el Chaparrí Ecolodge, construido para recibir a los visitantes que buscan convivir con la naturaleza, ha dado trabajo a muchos de los pobladores, y ha conseguido que la reserva sea autosostenible. Otros comuneros son guías y guardabosques: ¿quién mejor que ellos, que conocen y aman esa geografía, que es su propio hogar? Finalmente, el turismo responsable que ha generado la reserva beneficia también a los artesanos de la zona. Existen peligros latentes. La amenaza que representan la minería y la agricultura comercial, y las mafias de traficantes de tierras que rondan la reserva. Ante ellos, la comunidad campesina es la primera en ponerse en guardia. Eso es motivo de orgullo para Plengue. Mientras tanto, Chaparrí seguirá recibiendo a todo aquel visitante que quiera experimentar su naturaleza. Y continuará siendo refugio para el oso andino y la pava aliblanca, y también para el zorro, el venado, y otros mamíferos y anfibios, y las doscientas cincuenta especies de aves que la han convertido en un paraíso para su avistamiento. En el bosque seco del norte del Perú, Chaparrí está llena de vida.

Chaparri Reserve is the first Privately Protected Area in Peru, title that it received in 2001. In many ways, this is a groundbreaking experience in the country: it was the first time that an agricultural community handed over his land for nature conservation. artín Morales entró al mundo de la gastronomía en medio de números rojos. Casi en bancarrota quedó a mediados del 2011, luego de vender su casa por una causa culinaria: quería abrir un restaurante que le rindiera culto a la cocina peruana que lo había visto crecer. Pero nadie lo secundaba.

Se había hecho un nombre en el mundo de la música cuando joven: había trabajado como Dj, viajado y tocado en el Summer State de Nueva York, en el Central Park; había compartido el escenario con los White Stripes en el festival Lowlands, en Holanda; había trabajado con EMI; le dio el visto bueno a la cantante Joss Stone antes de ser el monstruo del soul que es hoy, e hizo famoso al alter ego de una niña llamada Destiny Hope Cyrus; pero pocos confiaban en su proyecto allá atrás, en la cocina. Quería poner de moda el sabor peruano cuando aún no se escuchaban los nombres Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, Gastón Acurio ni Virgilio Martínez. Mientras René Redzepi, co-propietario del restaurante Noma de Copenhague [con dos estrellas Michelín], le decía: «Martin, tu idea es súper fresh», el crítico culinario A.A. Gill, reconocido por su trabajo en The Sunday Times, uno de los diarios más importantes de Inglaterra, dudaba: «mientras no sea como la comida mexicana, vas a estar bien…». Pero no tenían idea en lo que se convertiría aquel aparente fracaso financiero.

En el 2012, Giles Coren, crítico culinario de The Times, confesó en su columna que luego de visitar aquel lugar ya no quería ir a otro sitio nunca más. Luego vendría su restaurante Andina, en el 2013, una picantería con la que busca rendir homenaje a su abuela, su Mamita Nati de Santiago de Chuco, La Libertad. El tercero sería Ceviche Old Street, inspirado en el bar Cordano del Centro de Lima. «Si bien los proyectos pueden compartir nombres, los conceptos siempre son diferentes», acota el chef que el pasado 28 de julio inauguró su nuevo concepto: Casita Andina, dedicado a la cultura cuzqueña y ayacuchana. Pero, ¿qué pudieron haber tenido en común las giras musicales, los discos, las especias y las ollas en la vida de Martín

Morales? El chef responde: «la creación de un plato es como la creación de una canción y estar en una cocina es como dirigir un grupo de música». Es por eso que quizá todos sus restaurantes tienen la cocina visible, tal como en un escenario. Y agrega: «el que está en el grill es el guitarrista; el asistente, el baterista. Todos tienen una tarea y todos deben coger el ritmo. El primer plato es el primer single y el menú completo, el álbum», finaliza. No es una respuesta que sorprenda del cocinero que, mientras trabajaba con los integrantes de la Orquesta América, esos que compusieron el Cha cha cha, soñaba con remangarse la camisa y adentrarse en el oficio culinario. ¿Si tuvieras que hacerme escuchar un single ahora mismo cuál sería?, es la última pregunta. Hay una pausa: «Un buen ají de gallina». Se oyen risas.

La ormosia coccinea es una planta que crece en Centroamérica y Sudamérica, y que produce pequeñas semillas de color rojo y negro. Huayruro, se les llama en Perú: brillantes y llamativas, del tamaño de un frejol, su uso se remonta a tiempos precolombinos y evoca más de un misterio. No solo porque el huaryro es bello a la vista y venenoso si se le ingiere: los incas usaban el huayruro en sus rituales, ya que le atribuían poderes de curación y protección. También ha sido parte de la tradición ancestral de la Amazonía, cuyos nativos se adornan, hasta el día de hoy, con collares y pulseras de cuentas de huayruros. Su función no solo es decorativa: es un amuleto. La sabiduría popular dice que si se lleva sobre el cuerpo, protegerá de malos intenciones y miradas envidiosas; si se guarda en la billetera, atraerá la fortuna. T rabajaba como albañil en Mali. Lo demás fue casualidad. Cuando necesitó una fotografía para un volante que estaba haciendo, se dio cuenta de la baja calidad de las fotos disponibles. Fue entonces que Hamidou Maïga (Burkina Faso, 1932), decidió aprender él mismo: estudió fotografía en Mopti, y empezó su práctica en Tombuctú. Y se convirtió, según su propio relato, en uno de los primeros fotógrafos en internarse en la región nigeriana. Las imágenes de Maïga componen un “excepcional registro de la sociedad maliense” del período de transición de una colonia francesa cosmopolita a una nación africana independiente. Encontradas para Occidente en el 2011 por el curador y galerista inglés Jack Bell, llegaron a Lima traídas por el fotógrafo peruano Mario Testino: las fotografías de Maïga, reunidas bajo el título “La ruta del Níger: de Mopti a Tombuctú”, conforman la tercera edición de Maestros de la Fotografía del MATE. Esta serie de exhibiciones expone una vez al año la obra de notables fotógrafos internacionales, y “procura mostrar la diversidad del lenguaje estético y visual de la fotografía histórica, moderna y contemporánea proveniente de diferentes culturas y modos de ver el mundo”, da cuenta el propio museo. Hamidou Maïga se fogueó con el fotoperiodismo. En 1958 montó su propio estudio en la ciudad de NʼGouma. “Mis clientes eran los pocos curiosos que no podían creer la idea de fijar una imagen en un papel”, aseguró el fotógrafo africano en una entrevista del 2011. Sus imágenes muestran a los aldeanos, músicos, artistas, deportistas, autoridades y otros personajes de la cambiante sociedad de Mali. También viajó durante dos años por la ruta del

H e used to work as a mason in Mali. Everything else was by chance. When he needed a photograph for a flyer that was doing, he realized the poor quality of the available photos. That is when Hamidou Maiga (Burkina Faso, 1932), he himself decided to learn: he studied photography in Mopti, and began his practice in Timbuktu. Thus, he became, according to his own story, one of the first photographers to penetrate the Nigerian region. Maïga’s images is “an unparalleled record of Malian society” related to the transitional period from a cosmopolitan French colony to an independent African nation. In 2011, the English Jack Bell, curator and gallery owner discovered them for the West and now they are in Lima, brought by Mario Testino, Peruvian photographer. Maïga photographs, under the title “The route of the Niger: from Mopti to Timbuktu”, make up MATE’s third edition of Masters of Photography. This series of exhibitions present once a year the work of remarkable international photographers, “aiming to show the diversity of the visual and aesthetic language related to historic photography, modern and contemporary, from different cultures and ways of seeing the world,” states the museum. Hamidou Maïga hardened with photojournalism. In 1958, he established his own studio in N’Gouma. “My clients were the few curious people who could not believe the idea of fixing an image on paper,” said African photographer in a 2011 interview. His images show villagers, musicians, artists, athletes, authorities and other characters of the ever-changing Mali society. He also traveled for two years by the route of the Niger River, developing a clientele for his typical outdoor studio portraits. “I became

Llegar desde La Paz es sencillo. Una opción es ir en bus: La ruta es nocturna y demora entre 8 y 10 horas, según la época. También se llega en tren desde Oruro (previo viaje La Paz-Oruro) tras 7 horas de camino por el altiplano. Por último, vía avión, tras un vuelo de 50 minutos. Una vez ahí, los hoteles de sal -como el Hotel Palacio de Sal, en Colchani- son la mejor opción para relajarse y dejar que el cielo estrellado haga lo suyo.

Uno: Uyuni, ubicado a 3363 metros sobre el nivel del mar y considerado el desierto más alto del mundo, no es un desierto propiamente dicho, sino el vestigio de dos antiguos lagos hoy secos: el Michín y el Tauka; es decir, 10 582 km2 de sedimentos de belleza insospechada. Dos: esta maravilla natural es también una importante fuente de recursos, pues alberga 10 000 millones de toneladas de sal y el 50-70% del litio del planeta, además de reservas de boro, potasio, magnesio, carbonatos (bórax), sulfatos de sodio y ulexita -también conocida como “piedra televisión”-. Tres: Uyuni son dos. En época húmeda (de noviembre a abril) se inunda y forma grandes espejos de agua que reflejan el cielo celeste. Esos meses son los indicados para ver “ojos de sal” -pozos de agua resplandeciente- y visitar sus 12 islas, como la Isla Pescado. En la época seca el agua se evapora y aparecen los llamados “hexágonos de sal”, forma-
