Casi sin darnos cuenta, más pronto de lo que esperábamos, Peruvian Magazine llega a su tercera edición. En justo reconocimiento a nuestra geografía planteamos para esta primera mitad de año dedicar una nota de portada a cada región: ya estuvimos en la mágica costa norte, ya vivimos la Semana Santa en Arequipa, y esta vez nos toca volar a la infinita selva loretana. Después de duros meses en los que el Fenómeno del Niño afectó a gran parte de la población, la temporada seca parece estar abriéndose paso y, con ella, la mejor época para visitar el oriente nacional, más aún cuando se acerca la maratónica Fiesta de San Juan, una tradición de largo arraigo en toda la región selvática.

Before we could notice, sooner than expected, Peruvian Magazine reaches its third edition. In acknowledgement of our geography we planned to devote a cover note for each region in this first half of the year: we were already in the magical north coast, and spent Easter in Arequipa, but now it’s time to fly to the never-ending Loreto jungle. After having gone through some difficult months in which the El Niño phenomenon affected a large part of the population, the dry season seems to be making its way and with it, the best time to visit the national East, particularly when the marathon celebration of San Juan is getting closer, a deeply rooted tradition in the jungle region.

Dicen que después del huracán llega la calma; en la selva, llega la fiesta. Entre un infinito verde, bajo un eterno sol, los locales celebran la vida. Los visitantes pueden unírseles, o tomar su propio camino. En esta edición, un especial con las mejores rutas para perderse –y encontrarse– en el nororiente: Iquitos y sus casas de fierro, Pacaya Samiria y su fauna, Belén y sus mil recovecos. Si esta revista lo sorprende camino a esta región, permita a su piel erizarse con un anticipo de lo que verá. Si no es el caso, aun está a tiempo: la temporada amazónica recién empieza y lo espera con los brazos abiertos. ¡A disfrutarla!

There is a saying along the lines of every cloud has a silver lining; in the jungle, the party begins. In the heart of an infinite green, under an eternal sunshine, locals celebrate life. Visitors can join them, or go their own way. Desde hace una década se especializa en fotografía aérea, registrando distintos espacios del Perú desde helicópteros, ultraligeros, avionetas y parapentes. asi cuatro mil metros sobre el nivel del mar. Casi cero grados centígrados. Casi en la frontera con Ecuador. Tan frías que sumergirse en ellas es casi una locura. Las Huaringas, un conjunto de catorce lagunas en la provincia piurana de Huancabamba, tienen según las creencias populares tal poder curativo que, a pesar de la distancia y lo duro del trayecto, reciben cada año a cerca de cinco mil personas buscando remedio a sus males.

t nearly four thousand meters above the sea level. At nearly zero degrees Celsius (32° Fahrenheit). At nearly border with Ecuador. It’s so cold that it’s almost insane to dive into their waters. According to popular belief, the Huaringas, a set of fourteen lagoons located in Huancabamba, Province of Piura, have such healing power that despite the distance and how difficult this path really is receive each year nearly five thousand people seeking a remedy for their ills.

¿Qué aflicciones ameritan tamaño sacrificio? Todo tipo. Los brujos de las Huaringas aseguran poder curar desde enfermedades mortales hasta males de amores, o hasta garantizar el éxito futuro.

A cambio, el visitante deberá someterse a sus exigencias: inhalar tabaco blanco con aguardiente de caña, mieles y hierbas; bailar al ritmo de las varas sonajeras que agitan incesantemente; recibir baños de talco, azúcar, lima y licores. La noche anterior al peregrinaje a la laguna son comunes las sesiones de limpia con San Pedro. Con ellas se inicia la desconexión del mundo tangible, en lúgubres ambientes abarrotados por cruces, espadas, piedras, figuras religiosas y cadáveres de animales disecados. Pero, con San Pedro o sin él, todos los ritos se centran en el baño en las heladas aguas. El visitante debe desprenderse de sus ropas –que, en este crudo clima, incluye chompas, pantalones de lana y chullos– para quedar en prendas interiores y caminar hasta donde puedan sumergirse completamente, limpiando su cuerpo y mente. Luego regresarán a la orilla, donde deberán soportar el frío hasta que el curandero termine con su sesión de purificación.

–alejada, aunque muy visitada– y la de Shimbe, de cerca de seis kilómetros de extensión. Al viajero se le recomienda ser especialmente cuidadoso con la selección de su guía. Hay más de medio centenar de chamanes en la zona y no todos gozan de buena reputación. Lo mejor será hablar con vecinos de Huancabamba y preguntar por aquellos más recomendados. Las tarifas son siempre pactadas en conversación, aunque difícilmente serán bajas.

El conocimiento ancestral tiene en las Huaringas un alto costo. Las leyendas que rodean estas lagunas aumentan la esperanza en quienes recurren a su poder sanador: se dice que eran estos espejos de agua los preferidos por el inca para buscar renovar su energía, y no es ningún secreto que hasta el ex presidente del Perú Alberto Fujimori se zambulló en ellas en más de una ocasión.

All kinds. The sorcerers of the Huaringas assure being able to cure deadly diseases to ills of love, or to ensure future success.

In return, the visitor must comply with their requirements: inhaling white tobacco with cane brandy, honey and herbs; dancing to the rhythm of rattles rods that they wave incessantly; receiving baths of talcum powder, sugar, lime and liquors.

The night prior to the pilgrimage to the lagoons are common the San Pedro cleansings sessions that are used to start the disconnection of the tangible world, in murky surroundings cluttered with crosses, swords, stones, religious figures and corpses of stuffed animals. But with San Pedro or not, all the rites focus on the bath in the icy waters. The visitor must shed their clothes - which, in this harsh weather, includes sweaters, wool pants and chullos - to stay in undergarments and walk to where he can submerge himself completely, cleaning up his body and mind. Then he will return to the shore, where he must withstand the cold until the curandero finishes with the session of purification.

There are many lagoons, but the most famous are the Laguna Negra –remote, although very visited– and the Shimbe Lagoon, that has an area of almost six kilometers. We recommend you to be especially careful when selecting your guide. There are more than fifty shamans in the region and not all enjoy good reputation. The best way will be talking with the neighbors of Huancabamba and ask for those most recommended. The rates are always agreed upon through direct dialogue, although they will hardly be low.

Ancestral knowledge has a high cost in the Huaringas. The legends surrounding these lagoons raise hopes in those who seek their healing power: it is said that these water mirrors were the Inca’s favorites when they were seeking to renew their energy, and it’s no secret that even the former president Alberto Fujimori dived under their waters more than once.

Y si debe escogerse un lugar para empezar el recorrido, la ciudad de Iquitos, la médula de la Amazonía peruana, es el punto ideal. Previo aviso para el viajero: no se deje engañar por su pequeña extensión, que ya la cumbia amazónica lo ha consagrado en sus letras: en la selva está la fiesta.

A little bit farther away, almost at the riverbank of the Amazon River, we find the Casa Morey, built in 1913 by the rubber Baron, Luis Morey. It is a Victorian-style house with tiles on the floor. The rescuers of this place, the British Richard Bodmer and his wife, Tula Fang, tell that at night the baron can still be heard walking down the hallways. Others swear they have seen him.

El pueblo primero: el Barrio de Belén, quince minutos al sur de Iquitos. La fiesta: San Juan. Conocido también como La Venecia Amazónica, Belén se divide en dos barrios: alto y bajo. La llegada, a diferencia de otros destinos, requiere de varias horas y demanda caminatas y el cruce de ríos, acompañados por guías especializados. Una vez allí, el viajero experimentará las costumbres de estos pueblos, muchas de ellas ajenas al occidentalismo de nuestro día a día. Es posible visitarla durante todo el año. Sin embargo, debe saber que en temporada de creciente (noviembre a abril), la reserva se convierte en un espectáculo de aves, monos y animales anfibios; en temporada de vaciante (mayo a octubre), por otro lado, animales como lagartos y taricayas son la principal atracción. Y la lista continúa casi al infinito: más de medio millar de especies de aves, cien de mamíferos y 69 de reptiles, además de mil especies vegetales, pueblan esta reserva. Pero si la sed por naturaleza se mantiene viva, un abanico de opciones se abre para el viajero más intrépido, como las reservas nacionales Matsés y Allpahuayo Mishana. Once there, the traveller will experience the customs of these peoples, many of them far away from the Westernization of our daily life. Another route towards the core of the jungle is the National Reserve of Pacaya Samiria. It has more than 2 million hectares representing the largest protected area of floodable amazon forests, one of the most bio diverse areas in the Planet. The rivers Marañon and Ucayali surround and its thickness protects endangered species, such as the river lion or giant nutria, the manatí and the pink dolphin of the Amazon River. Visits are welcome all year-round. But, please note that during the rainy season (November to April), the reserve turns into birds, monkeys and amphibious animals show; during the dry season (May to October), on the contrary, lizards and taricayas are the main attraction. And the list goes to the infinitive and beyond: more than 500 bird species, 100 of mammals and 69 of reptiles, together with thousands of plants, call this reserve home. kay Dedicada principalmente a la producción y comercialización de piezas artesanales –en estrecho vínculo con el diseño industrial y gráfico y las tendencias de la moda–, esta empresa ha tomado como inspiración principal la Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen, también conocida como “Mamacha Carmen”, en la provincia cusqueña de Paucartambo, donde KAY trabaja en estrecha colaboración con maestros mascareros. It is mainly engaged in the production and marketing of handcrafted pieces –intrinsically related to industrial and graphic design, and fashion-, this enterprise has taken its main inspiration from the Virgen del Carmen festival, also called “Mamacha Carmen”, in the province of Paucartambo, Cusco, where KAY works closely with maestros mascareros (master mask makers). Since traditional craftsmanship is perhaps the most tangible manifestation of intangible cultural heritage, Kay encourages artisans to continue to produce craft and to pass their skills and knowledge onto others, particularly within its own community, for this activity is a key factor in its social and economic development.

E El respeto a la tradición arequipeña está presente no solo en las recetas de La Capitana, sino en sus generosas porciones. The respect to Arequipa traditions is visible not only in La Capitana recipes but also in its generous serving size.

n la entrada de La Capitana hay un grabado en piedra: “Que se mantenga vivo en este lugar el inigualable espíritu de los arequipeños”. El mensaje data del 6 de agosto de 1899, cuando Trinidad Chávez fundó su picantería. Desde entonces, tres generaciones han mantenido en este lugar la cocina y las costumbres típicas de la ciudad blanca. La Capitana es ahora administrada por los hermanos José y César Díaz Huerta, quienes se han preocupado por mantener su identidad en detalles como las mesas largas en que se comparte entre desconocidos, las chombas de chicha, el uso del batán y, por supuesto, la cocina a leña. Cuando en La Capitana se promete un plato bien servido, se cumple al pie de la letra: abundancia y sabor. Su carta incluye pastel de papa, chupe de camarones, estofado, locro, costillar, soltero de queso y rocoto relleno, entre otros.

t the entrance of La Capitana, there is an engraving in stone: «Keep alive in this place the unique spirit of the Arequipenians». The message dates from August 6th, 1899, when Trinidad Chavez opened his picantería. Since then, three generations have kept in this place the cuisine and the typical customs of the White City. Today La Capitana is administered by Brothers Jose and Cesar Diaz Huerta, who were concerned with retaining its identity in details such as long tables which are shared between strangers, the chombas de chicha, the use of the batán and, of course, the firewood stove. When at La Capitana a dish well served is promised, it is fulfilled to the letter: wealth and taste.

The menu includes scalloped potato medley, chupe de camarones, stew, locro, ribs, soltero de queso and rocoto relleno, among others.

You can also order an American classic, which brings together in a single dish several of the specials of the day. Their prices, despite their wide fame, remain convenient: 14-20s soles.

Capón El Barrio Chino de Lima está ubicado a pasos del Mercado Central, en los alrededores de la calle Capón, donde se establecieron desde mediados del siglo XIX migrantes de las provincias chinas de Cantón y Sichuán. Recuperado para el turismo hace dos décadas, actualmente es un pujante y recargado barrio comercial, al mejor estilo chino, coronado por los chifas, restaurantes donde se mezclan lo mejor de las cocinas china y peruana.

Plaza San Martín Construida en 1921, en homenaje al centenario de la independencia del Perú, esta plaza luce en su centro la imagen del libertador nacional, el argentino José de San Martín, cruzando a caballo los Andes. A su alrededor se suceden edificaciones históricas de gran atractivo arquitectónico, como el Hotel Bolívar, el Club Nacional y el Teatro Colón. Desde ella, atravesando el Jirón de la Unión, se llega a la Plaza de Armas.

Mercado Central Reconstruido hace medio siglo, después de un amplio incendio, el Nuevo Mercado Central es hasta hoy el punto clave de la ciudad para la comercialización de insumos que van desde alimentos hasta utensilios de cocina. Un recorrido profundo le sorprenderá con mil y un productos de la infinita despensa de cultivos nacionales, a los más bajos precios que encontrará en la capital.

Un ambicioso proyecto espera iniciar pronto su remodelación.

Capon The Chinatown in Lima, known as the Barrio Chino is placed steps away from the Central Market, in the surroundings of Capon Street, where the immigrants from the Chinese provinces of Canton and Sichuan settled since mid-19th century. In the last two decades it experienced a revival for tourism, and currently is a flourishing and busy shopping quarter, in the best Chinese-style, crowned by the chifas, restaurants where the best of the Peruvian and Chinese cuisines are mixed.

San Martín square It was built in 1921, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Peru. In the middle of the square stands a magnificent statue of the national liberator, the Argentinian Jose de San Martin, on his horse crossing the Andes. All around it you will find a series of historical buildings of very attractive architecture, such as the Hotel Bolivar, the Club Nacional and the Colón Theater. From it you can reach the Plaza de Armas walking across the Jiron de la Union.

Central Market It was rebuilt half a century ago, after a large fire; the Nuevo Mercado Central is up till now the key spot of the city for the commercialization of inputs ranging from food to cooking utensils. A detailed visit will amaze you with the thousand and one products of the endless pantry of local agricultural crops, with the lowest prices that you will find in the capital city. An ambitious project hopes to launch its refurbishment in the near future.

Captive on slavery, blacks arrived in the country from Africa made use of everything they had at hand to stay alive through music. Chairs, old packing fruit crates or hollowed-out gourds were opportunities for percussion. So was the Afro-Peruvian cajita: it is believed that its origin goes back to the boxes employed for collecting alms in the churches. When someone played with the opening and closing of its lid, suddenly someone else mixed it with blows from sticks, and thus a new instrument with captivating sonority was born. Thanks to the invaluable work of Rafael Santa Cruz, so missed since his recent departure, almost a decade ago the Afro-Peruvian cajita was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. .

ás que un restaurante, un estilo de vida. Así fue creado Nanka, fusión orgánica. La idea estuvo clara desde un inicio para sus fundadores, Lorena Valdivia y Jason Nanka, sensiblemente desaparecidos cuatro años atrás. El matrimonio de chefs llevaba una frase como estandarte: “Nuestra cocina, nuestro amor”. Por ello llevaron su consciencia ambientalista a cada elemento que constituía su creación gastronómica.

Nanka es la manifestación de un propósito ecológico que parte desde la arquitectura y se extiende hasta los detalles. Las columnas del salón principal, por ejemplo, son de árboles del callejón de Huaylas; la carta está hecha con papel de algas, las mesas a base de madera de parihuelas, la barra con mermas de granito, las servilletas de papel orgánico, los espejos se decoran con cáscaras de coco y los removedores de cocteles con tallos de hierbaluisa.

Therefore they carried their environmental consciousness to each element of their culinary creations. Nanka is the expression of an ecological purpose that starts with its architecture and extends down to the details. The columns of the main hall, for example, come from trees of Callejón de Huaylas; the carte du jour is made with seaweed paper, tables made from wooden pallets, the bar with granite waste, napkins made from recycled paper, mirrors are decorated with coconut shells and Lemongrass stalks are cocktail stirrers.

Although the Peruvian organic market is still incipient to cater all the restaurant needs, today’s owners Juan Carlos Valdivia and Morales Pebbles seek to make it to the greatest possible extent. They have an organic garden and are proud to do without chemicals or preservatives. Their chickens, for example, are raised on a farm with no growth hormones. Their menu is basically divided into two sections: the legacy, as Valdivia calls the forty dishes that Jason and Lorena left -irreplaceable, that includes Chicharrón de panceta glaseado (glazed pancetta cracklings) or Arroz con pato acevichado Nanka (rice with duck) - and other twenty dishes which change every season. Particular attention is given to ingredients and procedures: all dishes are prepared in two stages, meats are cooked for twelve hours minimum.

sus cocteles, como es el caso del Pisco Sour de estación Nanka. Para escapar de los preservantes, el restaurante creó su propia receta de amargo de angostura. Resaltan también los vegetales baby como el rabanito, la zanahoria, el tomate cherry, el brócoli y los brotes de pop corn, utilizados en sus cinco versiones de ensaladas.

Preservar los insumos marinos es otra prioridad, por ello respetan las vedas y trabajan solo con aquellos productos que cumplen con el tamaño mínimo para su ingesta y comercialización. Las opciones que ofrece la pesca sostenible están en sus platos para compartir: la cachema, la pintadilla, la señorita, la charela y la caballa. Búsquelos en la

carta como ‘El pescado entero del día, como más te guste’.

En Nanka se come peruano, sí, pero con una mistura que incluye toques de cada latitud. Ejemplo de esto es el Bangers N’ Mash, un plato británico hecho originalmente a base de salchichas con puré de papas y acompañadas de guisantes o coles de bruselas y gravy de cebolla, pero recreado en una versión original y servido con doscientos gramos de chistorra –salchicha española de cerdo y res–, puré de papa amarilla peruana y salsa de cerveza artesanal. No hay mejor forma de dar la vuelta al mundo.

Humanización del servicio Al entender que nuestras acciones tienen efectos, nos percatamos de que el inicio de un cambio puede estar en actos tan simples y vitales como el saludo. ¿Estamos actuando como nos gustaría hacerlo?

H

ace pocos días, durante una reunión en la que compartí experiencias de servicio al cliente, una pregunta surgió de parte de un amigo que trabaja como gerente comercial en una empresa: ¿Cómo podemos pedir a nuestros equipos que hablen de servicio al cliente, en un contexto de agresión e indolencia como el que nos toca vivir?

La respuesta salió de mis labios sin mediar análisis, pues soy una convencida de que hoy más que nunca tenemos que conectar con la razón de ser y la esencia humana de las empresas, los equipos y las personas. Hoy más que nunca tenemos la responsabilidad de construir equipos económica y humanamente sostenibles. Es responsabilidad de quienes tenemos la suerte de tener algo que ofrecer, hacerlo desde la comprensión y la necesidad de humanizar las relaciones que mantenemos en nuestro entorno, de tomar conciencia del impacto de nuestras palabras y conductas sobre quienes se ven tocados por nosotros.

Escobar y Rodríguez, en su libro Creatividad en el Servicio, lo explican bastante bien: “Hablar de servicio es hablar de necesidades humanas y su satisfacción en ambas vías, pues no solo sirve a quien lo recibe sino también a quien lo proporciona”.

Cuando nos alejamos de la obligación de cumplir un protocolo y nos enfocamos en recordar que al otro lado hay un ser humano que se verá afectado por nuestra interacción, entonces no solo estamos cuidando la relación con el cliente sino que nos estamos cuidando a nosotros mismos.

Según la investigación de satisfacción de servicio de Accenture Global, realizada en 2013, “el 66% de los consumidores cambiaron sus preferencias de marca o negocios debido a un servicio pobre. De este porcentaje, el 82% indicó que se hubiesen quedado si la empresa hubiera hecho algo por retenerlos”. Lo realmente valioso en este dato es el hecho de reconocer la necesidad que

está detrás de este indicador: un 82% pide validación y reconocimiento, pues asegura que se quedaría si la empresa le hubiese demostrado que le importa. Podemos concluir, entonces, que los clientes no solo se van por un servicio pobre, sino porque no les hicimos saber que lamentamos haberlos afectado negativamente.

Resulta increíble que las empresas se vean forzadas a implementar un protocolo que exija saludar y despedirse. ¿Saludar no es acaso reconocer al otro en su condición de ser humano? ¿Cómo es posible que tengamos que exigir a nuestros colaboradores que saluden como parte de una medición de calidad y que esto no ocurra de forma natural?

Las empresas contratan especialistas para desarrollar protocolos de servicio y ‘enseñarles’ a sus colaboradores a saludar a sus clientes mirándolos a los ojos. En mi labor como coach ejecutivo y con equipos, veo con mucha frecuencia que esto ocurre también en los equipos de trabajo y –lo que es más doloroso aún– en nuestras propias casas. Hemos dejado de lado el saludar y vivimos enfocados en el celular como si estuviéramos ocupados, olvidando que lo realmente importante está ahí, en ese mismo momento, en la mirada del otro. ¿Qué pasaría si empezamos a vivir el protocolo en familia, si al llegar a casa miramos a los ojos y sonreímos a quienes nos reciben detrás de esa puerta? ¿Cómo serían nuestras relaciones si en vez de señalar y exigir empezásemos a preguntar si hay algo en lo que podamos ayudar? ¿Qué pasaría si nuestro trabajo y su protocolo fueran una excusa para empezar a consolidar nuestra propia humanidad? Empezar a influir a nuestras familias desde el aprecio y la validación humana, usando como eje la esencia del protocolo de atención. Si comprendemos entonces que afectar a otros y permitirnos ser afectados es la esencia del servicio, la pregunta que surge naturalmente es: ¿Cómo estoy afectando a quienes me rodean?

Humanizing services Once we come to understand that our deeds bring effects, we realize that the beginning of a change may be in simple and vital actions such as greetings. Are we behaving as we would like to do?

F

ew days ago, during a meeting in which I shared experiences related to customer service, a friend of mine who works as sales manager in a company raised the question: «How can we ask our teams to talk about customer service, in a context of aggression and indolence we are living in today?»

The answer jumped out of my mouth without analysis, because I’m convinced that now more than ever we have to connect with the raison d’être and the very human essence of businesses, teams and people. Today more than ever we have a responsibility to build economically and humanly sustainable teams. It is the responsibility of those of us lucky enough to have something to offer, to do it based on understanding that we need to humanize our relationships with the people around us, to become aware of the impact of our words and behavior on those whom we approach.

In their book, “Creatividad en el Servicio”, Escobar and Rodriguez explain it fairly well: “To talk about service is talking about human needs and its satisfaction in both ways, not only to those receiving it but also to those granting it. When we move away from the obligation to comply with a protocol and focus on reminding ourselves that on the other side there is a human being who will be affected by our interaction, then not only we are taking care of the relationship with the customer, but also that we are taking care of ourselves.

According to Accenture 2013 Global Consumer Pulse Survey, “66 percent of surveyed customers changed their preferences in terms of brand and business due to poor customer service experiences. Of this percentage, 82% report that they would not have switched had the company done something to retain them”. The

really valuable thing of this data lays in the very fact of acknowledging the need behind this indicator: 82 percent of surveyed customers requests validation and recognition, because they indicate that they would stay if the company had shown them that they cared about them. We can thus conclude that customers not only switch due to poor customer service experiences, but due to the fact that we did not let them know that we regret having negatively affected them.

It’s unbelievable that companies are forced to implement a Protocol requiring things such as greeting and saying goodbye. Isn’t greeting to recognize the other as a human being? How it is possible that we have to demand our collaborators to salute as part of quality measurement and that this does not happen naturally?

Nowadays, firms are hiring professionals to develop service protocols and “teach” his colleagues greet customers looking them in the eye. In my profession as executive and teams coach, I see too often that this also happens in work teams and - what is even more painful - in our own homes. We have set aside the salute and live more focused on cellphones as if we were busy, forgetting that what really matters is there, in that very moment, in the eyes of the other. What if we start to live the protocol with our family, if arriving at home we look in the eyes and smile those who receive us behind that door?

How would our relationships be if instead of pointing and demanding we began to ask if there is anything we can do to help?

What if our job and its protocol were an excuse to start consolidating our own humanity? And we begin to influence our families based on esteem and human validation, using the service protocol’s essence.

While we understand that affecting others and allowing us to be affected are the essence of service, a natural question to ask is: How I’m affecting those around me?

Atraído por la posibilidad de ser un extranjero viviendo un contexto ajeno, este portafolio representa, principalmente, su interés por dos ideas opuestas: la inalcanzable objetividad de capturar un momento a escondidas, sin alterar la escena; y el juego de lograr con la particularidad de su mirada imágenes que hablen más del fotógrafo que de lo fotografiado.

I n August 2015, the photographer Ronald Martínez decided to make a 5-week trip around Western North America, from California to Alaska, in a route where visits to National Parks were the main focus but that also included an exploration of street photography. He felt attracted by the possibility of being a foreigner living in a foreign contexts, reason why this portfolio mainly represents two opposite ideas: the unreachable objectivity of capturing a moment from a hiding place, without altering the scene; and the game of obtaining with his peculiar vision pictures that speak mostly of the photographer than of the photographed object.

Por más de tres siglos nueve comunidades se han organizado cada cuatro años para trabajar y celebrar durante casi una semana entera la restauración del techo del templo San Francisco de Asís. La tradición sigue viva.

Los trozos más pequeños flotan en el aire y crean una particular atmósfera en la que nueve comunidades se deshacen del rústico techo de la iglesia San Francisco de Asís para reemplazarlo por nuevas fibras que continúen manteniendo en pie la estructura de barro. Así como la han mantenido desde que fue alzada en el siglo XVII para resistir cada año trescientos días de lluvia.

Se trata del ‘wasi chakuy’, una jornada de cinco, seis o hasta siete días, dependiendo del clima, en la que el trabajo y la fiesta no son conceptos contrapuestos. For more than three centuries nine communities have been organized each four years to work and celebrate for nearly a whole week on the restoration of the ceiling of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi.

n Marcapata, Cusco, each four years there appears to be raining straw. The smaller pieces floating in the air create a special atmosphere when nine communities get rid of the rustic ceiling of the Church of Saint Francis de Assisi to replace it with new fibers that will keep standing the structure of mud. This is how they have been doing since it was built in the 17th century so it could resist each year hundred days of rain.

It’s the “wasi chakuy”, a day of five, six or even seven days, depending on climate, when labor and party are not contrasting concepts. Conversely, the day is accompanied by

The youngsters take charge of the ceiling as if they were a swarm of ants. The elderly stay by the Church rubbing the fresh straw into ropes that secure the large blocks of ichu (Stipa ichu). Only unmarried or widowed women are allowed to help in the task. The rest of the women joins the feast by providing food and chicha. But the spectacle’s main protagonist is the “mula”, a forty centimeters traditional piece of finely worked wood, in which is placed the ichu bales that by means of a system of ropes, are carried up to the top.

Es mantener viva ‘la cumbre’ –significado en quechua de Marcapata–, una de las zonas con mayor número de aguaceros con vientos intensos en el país. A pesar de los más dos siglos de lluvia que ha resistido hasta hoy, el ritual comunitario del pasado continúa garantizando el futuro.

Coronado por encantadoras lagunas y quebradas, el distrito de Santiago de Viñak es un santuario natural en la sierra de Lunahuaná, solo cinco horas al sur de Lima. Al paraíso se llega por carretera, pero se disfruta sin motores.

Topped with enchanting lagoons and gorges, the district of Santiago de Viñak is a natural sanctuary in the mountain region of Lunahuana, located just five hours south of Lima. Paradise is reached by road, but enjoyed without engines.

or las noches, las estrellas parecen estar al alcance de las manos.

Viajar a Viñak es, de alguna forma, ser partícipe de una peregrinación elísea. ¿Quién dijo que había que esperar toda una vida para llegar al cielo santo? El distrito se posa a faldas del cerro Calaquenhua, a más de tres mil metros sobre el nivel del mar, pero la excursión empieza en pavimento. Para llegar es necesario tomar la Panamericana Sur hasta el km 132, luego el desvío hasta Cañete para seguir la ruta pasando Lunahuaná, Pacarán y Zúñiga, hasta el puente San Jerónimo. Una vez allí, se da vuelta en “U” en la primera entrada y se sigue 40 kilómetros más por un camino de trocha que se encargará de llevar al viajero hasta este destino con naturaleza casi virgen para el turismo. Porque Viñak es como un lienzo en fresco. Y quizá por ello el panorama puede antojarse irreal: cielo de azul unánime, negro absoluto por las noches, doscientos kilómetros de caminos de herradura y colibríes y carneros sobre el verde inacabable de los cerros y el gras. Los pellizcos son válidos. La geografía abraza al escéptico: el Edén existe.

The district settles at the base of mount Calequenhua, at more than three thousand masl, but the excursion begins on asphalt pavements.

For reaching Viñak it is necessary to take Panamericana Sur as far as km 132, until the turnoff for Cañete to follow the route passing through Lunahuana, Pacaran and Zuñiga, to Bridge San Jeronimo. Once there, you turn “U” in the first entry and drive some other 40km more along a dirt trail that will lead you to this destination with least touristed nature, since Viñak is as a virtually blank canvas. And perhaps for this reason the panorama may seem unreal: a unanimous blue sky, absolutely black by night, two hundred kilometers of bridleways with hummingbirds and sheep on the never-ending green of the hills and grass. Pinches are valid. The geography embraces the skeptic: Eden exists.

Para recorrer Viñak es necesario afianzar la resistencia pulmonar. El destino es ideal para los aficionados del trekking, aunque también es posible llegar a sus rincones a caballo o en bicicleta. Existe un trayecto para cada modalidad y cada exigencia corporal. Si se es principiante y se va a pie, por ejemplo, no debe dejar de visitarse el valle Marca –una caminata de dos horas– en donde se entra en contacto con el pastoreo y la esencia agrícola de la que se nutre la provincia de Yauyos. Para una excursión de nivel intermedio, el río Florida es ideal. Ubicado a cuatro horas de distancia, es un conocido espacio entre los birdwatchers en busca de los majestuosos halcones de la zona. Pero si se aspira a la máxima exigencia, enfile hacia la quebrada de Palca, a seis horas de camino, donde se encuentra vestigios de los primeros cazadores y agricultores llegados a la zona diez mil años atrás.

Para quienes no son amantes del trekking, muchas otras alternativas existen para conocer Viñak y alrededores a profundidad. A cuatro horas a lomo de caballo se llega al poblado de Hortigal, hogar de leyendas de espíritus y misterios. Si se es más avezado, una ruta de diez horas lo

For an intermediate level outing, the Florida River is perfect. It is located four hours away, it is a well-known spot among birdwatchers searching for the majestic hawks in the area. But if you aspire to the maximum exigency, run towards Palca Gorge, a six hour drive, where you will find traces of the first hunters and farmers arrived in the area 10,000 years ago.

El refugio Santiago de Viñak es también conocido por albergar un hospedaje turístico de categoría mundial. El Refugio Viñak-Reichraming invita a perderse en la naturaleza y, por qué no, en uno mismo. Se ubica en el centro de la localidad, desde donde puede partirse a los parajes mencionados y a poblados aledaños como Esmeralda o Pampa Rosario.

Su arquitectura contribuye a la cercanía con el espacio: construcciones rústicas, extensas áreas verdes y amplios ventanales que se funden con el cielo. Ofrece a sus visitantes sesiones de yoga, paseos a caballo, trekking y downhill en bicicleta. Solo es cuestión de recorrer las agrestes rutas y dejarse impresionar por los paisajes sempiternos, los riachuelos, cataratas y ríos, así como también por la aparición de águilas, cernícalos y hasta cóndores. Consejo final: olvide los calendarios y apague las alarmas: en Viñak usted es propiedad de la naturaleza.

Its architecture enhances closeness to the environment: rustic buildings, extensive green areas and large windows that melt into the sky. Among the many activities, visitors can take yoga sessions, horseback riding, trekking or mountain biking. It’s just a matter of exploring the roads framed by a wild landscape and let yourself be moved by the everlasting sceneries, streams, waterfalls and rivers, as well as the appearance of eagles, kestrels and even condors. A final tip: forget about schedules and turn off alarms: for at Viñak you are a property of nature.
