UN NUEVO AÑO, UNA NUEVA OPORTUNIDAD A new year, a new opportunity El inicio del 2018 y el verano que se instala en las ciudades nos llevan irremediablemente hacia la costa. En portada está Ica, una región que combina riqueza cultural con diversión y adrenalina. Y que, además, ha inspirado a muchos por su particular paisaje de desierto y playa. En Lima nos detenemos en Chorrillos, distrito de gran tradición pesquera, para disfrutar una de las mejores cosas que tiene la capital, y que sin duda debería aprovechar mejor: su Costa Verde. Finalmente, nos movemos hasta el norte, cuyas playas y sol siempre son sinónimo de relajo y disfrute. Esta vez, Punta Sal nos recibe por otro motivo: para contarnos la historia de la conservación de una de sus especies más notables, el tiburón ballena. Todo nuevo año nos invita a la reflexión y a plantearnos metas. En Peruvian Magazine elegimos buscar "lo mejor del Perú" que está en su historia, en el legado de sus grandes civilizaciones, en su gastronomía y otras manifestaciones culturales vivas, en su biodiversidad y en la silente belleza de sus paisajes. Todo esto es patrimonio de los peruanos. Es menester tenerlo presente para cuidarlo y hacer de un mejor país nuestra gran meta este año y siempre.
The beginning of 2018 and the upcoming summer season naturally leads us towards the coast. The cover shows Ica, a region that combines cultural wealth with fun and adrenaline. Moreover, it has inspired many for its particular landscape of desert and beach. In Lima, we stop in Chorrillos, a district of great fishing tradition, to enjoy one of the best things that the capital has, and certainly to make the most of it: its Costa Verde. Finally, we head to the north, where the beaches and sunshine are always synonymous with relaxation and enjoyment. This time, with Punta Sal offering a novelty: to tell us the story of the conservation of one of its most notable species, the whale shark. The New Year invites us to reflect and set goals. In Peruvian Magazine we chose to gather the best of Peru that is present in its history, in the legacy of its great civilizations, in its gastronomy and other living cultural manifestations, in its biodiversity, and in the silent beauty of its landscapes. All this is the heritage of Peruvians. It is necessary to keep this in mind to look after it and make a better country our main goal this year and always.

El discreto (y peligroso) encanto de los delfines rosados. The discreet (and dangerous) charm of pink dolphins. Se cuentan diversas leyendas alrededor de ese curioso animal que es el llamado bufeo colorado o delfín rosado. También conocido como delfín del Amazonas, es una especie de mamífero cetáceo odontoceto de la familia Iniidae, que incluye varias especies de delfines de río. Sus colores y extrañas formas han fascinado a los habitantes de la Amazonía, así como a sus visitantes. Misterio es, sobre todo, lo que lo rodea.

Several legends have been told about this curious animal called the bufeo or pink river dolphin. Also known as the Amazon river dolphin, it is a toothed whale species classified in the family Iniidae, which includes several river dolphin species. Its colors and strange shapes have fascinated the inhabitants of the Amazon as well as its visitors. It is especially surrounded by mystery.
Se dice que se transforman en humanos y llegan a las fiestas, muchas veces a la de San Juan. Son de tez blanca, a veces rubios, en algunos casos usan sombrero para tapar el orificio que los hace respirar. Así como capturan la atención en el río, también son galantes en las fiestas. De inmediato logran la mirada de las chicas más bellas del lugar. Invitan a todos de beber y se ganan muy rápido el favor de los hombres del pueblo. A veces llegan solos, a veces en grupo. Todos los habitantes de la selva peruana han escuchado las historias, pero nadie imagina que sus hijas serán seducidas por esos encantadores forasteros. Entres las tribus amazónicas se cuenta que estos animales fueron transformados por una hechicera. Eran humanos, pero al no ceder a los pedidos de la bruja, fueron condenados.
It is said that they turn into humans and join the festivities, often the San Juan celebration. They are white-skinned, sometimes blonde, in some cases they wear a hat to cover the hole that helps them breathe. Just as they attract attention on the river, they are also charming at parties. They immediately get the attention of the most beautiful girls in the place. They invite everyone to drink and they gain favor with local men very quickly. Sometimes they arrive alone, sometimes in a group. All the inhabitants of the Peruvian jungle have heard the stories, but nobody imagines that their daughters will be seduced by those charming strangers. It is said among the Amazonian tribes that these animals were transformed by a sorceress. They were human that were punished for not giving in to the witch's requests.
Los bufeos colorados trasmutados en personas no beben y, por ello, se les puede detectar. El alcohol rompe su hechizo. Ellos emprenden un encantamiento para seducir a las mujeres más hermosas y llevarlas a su reino en las profundidades del río. Las que caen rendidas a su conjuro se les ve desorientadas vagando en las riberas por la noche. Sin embargo, hay una solución antes de que se ahoguen y el delfín las pueda convertir en parte de su séquito personal. Si se detecta el encantamiento, se debe actuar con rapidez. Un chaman curtido en las artes y conjuros amazónicos tiene el poder de preparar un brebaje y una oraciones que se deben repetir a la víctima para que despierte de su sueño.
The pink river dolphins transformed into people do not drink and this is how they can be identified. Alcohol breaks their spell. Se reportan desapariciones, familias que se lamentan. Bellas jovencitas ahogadas. Y la sonrisa extraña del bufeo colorado ha llegado a irritar a los deudos. ¿Qué tiene su color que ver con la magia que irradian? Inexplicable hasta el momento. Otros comentan que las mujeres seducidas se convierten en sirenas que cantan (o lloran) bajo las estrellas en la noche oscura de la selva amazónica. Se lamentan por su destino o cantan la inmortalidad de nueva vida.
Missing women have been reported, families are left mourning. Beautiful young women drowned. And the strange smile of the pink river dolphin that the mourners find annoying. What has its color to do with the magic that they radiate? There is no explanation so far. Others say that the seduced women become mermaids who sing (or cry) under the stars in the dark nights of the Amazon rainforest. They lament their destiny or sing to the immortality of their new life.

Elaborado con las uvas no aromáticas, este pisco es producto de la destilación de mostos frescos de una sola variedad de uva. Puede ser quebranta, negra criolla, mollar o uvina, cepas que aseguran que el bebedor no se saturará de las sensaciones. Es ideal para la preparación de pisco sour, el coctel con pisco por excelencia.
Hecho con las cepas de uva más aromáticas como son moscatel, albilla, torontel e italia. Es un pisco que ofrece una amplia gama de aromas y combinaciones exquisitas. Esta variedad es muy utilizada para preparar los clásicos chilcanos, que tan bien caen en verano.
Para producir esta variedad de pisco se interrumpe el proceso de fermentación habitual de la uva, con lo que se consigue un pisco con un dulzor especial y características diferentes, un sabor sutil, fino y elegante. Es el pisco ideal para consumir puro y disfrutar de una gran variedad de aromas y sabores.
Es el resultado de la combinación de al menos dos de las ocho cepas distintas de uva existentes. Las proporciones para la combinación son libres y cada bodeguero utiliza su creatividad para alcanzar la mezcla perfecta y un sabor único. Se utiliza mayormente para la preparación del pisco sour.
To produce this variety of pisco, the usual fermentation process of the grape is interrupted, which results in a pisco with a special sweetness and different characteristics, a subtle, fine and elegant flavor. It is the ideal pisco to consume pure and enjoy a wide variety of aromas and flavors.
It is the result of the combination of at least two of the eight different grape strains. Proportions are freely combined and each pisco maker uses his creativity to achieve the perfect blend and a unique flavor. It is used mostly to prepare pisco sour.
Made with non-aromatic grapes, this pisco is the product of the distillation of fresh musts from a single grape variety. La Costa Verde que bordea la capital es uno de los atractivos más emblemáticos de la cuidad. Al extremo sur de este litoral se encuentra el distrito de Chorrillos, un antiguo pueblo de pescadores que aún mantiene ese espíritu. Su terminal pesquero se llena de vida, sobre todo cuando empieza la temporada de verano y playas vecinas, como la de Agua Dulce, empiezan a llamar a los bañistas. El muelle acoge los puestos y restaurantes de la Asociación de Pescadores Artesanales José Olaya, que existe desde la década del treinta. Mientras se saborea un ceviche

preparado al momento, puede disfrutarse del paisaje que conforman las pequeñas embarcaciones de colores adentrándose en el mar chorrillano, fuente de gran variedad de peces y mariscos. Se dice que el mejor pescado es el más fresco, y más fresco que en el terminal imposible encontrar. The Costa Verde, which borders the capital, is one of the most emblematic attractions of the city. It is said that the best fish is the freshest, and the fish at the terminal is as fresh as it can be.

La región al sur de Lima es un nutrido campo de actividades que giran en torno a gastronomía, historia y deporte. Su excepcional combinación de desierto junto al mar cobijó grandes culturas ancestrales y también tradiciones que siguen vivas. This region south of Lima is full of activities that revolve around gastronomy, history, and sports. Its exceptional combination of a desert by the sea sheltered great ancestral cultures and also traditions that are still alive.
El pintor Sérvulo Gutiérrez, uno de los artistas más importantes que ha dado la región al sur de Lima, retrató con colorido expresionismo los paisajes de Ica. Los huarangos son protagonistas en sus cuadros. Son estos árboles expresiones de vida en el desértico paisaje iqueño, una región que fue cuna de diversas culturas como los Paracas y los Nazca, entre las más conocidas. Hoy, Ica constituye una de las alternativas más nutridas de actividades turísticas para el visitante. Tan solo desde Lima, y dependiendo de la ciudad a la que se apunte (Pisco, Paracas, Ica, Nazca, entre otras), el recorrido no es menos de una hora ni más de cuatro.
Painter Sérvulo Gutiérrez, one of the most important artists in this region located south of Lima, portrayed the landscapes of Ica with vivid expressionism. The Huarangos are the main elements in his paintings. Hay tres formas de disfrutar esta región, aunque no son excluyentes. Una es la arqueológica/histórica, para los interesados en ahondar en la cultura ancestral y republicana de la zona. Otra es la deportiva, con diversas opciones desde lo más extremo hasta lo más apacible. Y, finalmente, la gastronómica, pilar del motor turístico de los últimos tiempos.
There are three ways to enjoy this region, although they are not exclusive. There is the archaeological/historical tour for those interested in exploring the ancestral and republican culture of the area. The sports tour, with various options from the most extreme to the most relaxing alternative. And, finally, the gastronomic tour, which is the latest major pillar of tourism.
En cuestiones históricas, hay algunos imperdibles más allá de las plazas de armas principales de la región. Unos muy interesantes son, por ejemplo, Wari Kayan en la falda del Cerro Colorado, a 18 kilómetros al sur de Pisco. Un complejo de la cultura Paracas, muestra de su urbanismo y costumbres funerarias. Otro es el de Tambo Colorado (O Puka Tampu), en el distrito de Humay. Se dice que fue una edificación mandada a realizar durante la época del Inca Pachacútec (alrededor del 1450). Se cuenta que este lugar había tenido la finalidad de ser la residencia del gobernante incaico en esta zona. Asimismo, la Casa Museo Maria Reiche es
As for historical options, there are some must-see places in addition to important main squares in the region. Some of the most interesting ones are, for example, Wari Kayan on the slopes of Cerro Colorado, 18 kilometers south of Pisco. It is a complex of the Paracas culture which shows its urban development and funeral practices. Another option is Tambo Colorado (or Puka Tampu), in the District of Humay. It is said that it was a building commissioned during the Inca Pachacutec period (around 1450) with the purpose of serving as the residence of the Inca ruler in this area. La edición 40 del Dakar partió de Lima con la atención de 190 millones de espectadores, rumbo a los terrenos más duros de Perú, Bolivia y Argentina. El Rally Dakar volvió a incluir a Perú después de cinco años. Esta ha sido la tercera vez que la clásica competencia automovilística –sin duda, la más famosa del mundo- pasa por territorio peruano, y la segunda en la que parte de Lima, desde que el organizador, la Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), trajo la competencia a Sudamérica en 2009. Esta edición es especial no solo porque vuelve a atravesar la geografía peruana: también porque marca los 40 años del rally raid más difícil del mundo. La edición de aniversario convocó a 525 competidores en 337 vehículos en carrera, entre ellos, los mejores pilotos de los últimos tiempos: campeones como San Sunderland, Cyrill Despress, Carlos Sainz, Nani Roma y Stephane Peterhansel. Peru was included again in the Dakar Rally after five years. This is the third time that the classic car competition -undoubtedly the most famous in the world- passes through Peruvian territory, and the second time it starts in Lima, since organizer Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) brought the competition to South America in 2009. This edition is special not only because it crosses the Peruvian geography again, but also because it is the 40th anniversary edition of the most difficult rally raid in the world. The anniversary edition summoned 525 competitors with 337 vehicles participating in the race, including the best racers of recent times: champions such as San Sunderland, Cyrill Despress, Carlos Sainz, Nani Roma, and Stephane Peterhansel.

CARRERA DE IMPACTO Desde que el rally llegó a Sudamérica cada país por donde ha pasado percibió un estimado de 300 millones de dólares en ingresos, entre alojamiento, alimentos y bebidas, transporte, entre otros rubros, según asegura la propia ASO. En la edición del 2017, por ejemplo, cuatro millones de personas se acercaron a las rutas de la carrera para ver pasar a los vehículos en competencia. Este año, el Dakar mostrará el Perú a 190 millones de telespectadores, calcula el Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo. Sin embargo, el impacto no es solo económico. Existe una polémica sobre la posibilidad de que la ruta de la carrera destruya patrimonio cultural, especialmente las hermosas dunas de la costa peruana y sus geoglifos aún sin inventariar. Los defensores del Dakar aseguran que el daño y la basura que se han identificado se deben al público que decide seguir la carrera, y no a la organización. Como previsión, este año se habilitaron 50 zonas seguras para evitar cualquier daño a espacios patrimoniales y se prometieron duras sanciones para quienes no respeten las vías permitidas. Las rutas de Sudamérica se merecen ese cuidado. Desde sus inicios en 1978, el rally Dakar ha atravesado algunos de los parajes más inhóspitos de 29 países de Europa, África y Sudamérica: escenarios maravillosos que ponen a prueba a los mejores pilotos.

IMPACT RACE The rally event in South America has generated in each country where it has passed approximately 300 million dollars in income, including accommodation, food and beverages, transportation, among other items, according to the ASO. In the 2017 edition, for example, four million people approached the race routes to see competing vehicles pass by. The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism is calculating that the Dakar rally will show Peru to 190 million viewers this year. However, the impact is not only economic. There is a controversy about the possibility that the race route will destroy cultural heritage, especially the beautiful dunes of the Peruvian coast and its geoglyphs yet to be inventoried. Supporters of the Dakar rally allege that the damage and garbage generated are caused by the spectators that follow the race and not by the organization. As a precaution, 50 safe zones were set up this year to avoid damage to patrimonial spaces and harsh sanctions were established for those who fail to observe the permitted routes. The routes of South America deserve that care. Since its inception in 1978, the Dakar rally has crossed some of the most inhospitable places in 29 countries in Europe, Africa, and South America: wonderful scenarios that put the best racers to the test.

La verdad de la milanesa es que por momentos no pensaron que terminarían concretando su sueño de tener un restaurante, y menos uno con esta temática. Lo que sí sabían Ernesto Noriega, Lucas Ballón, Daniel Temple y José Boado era que querían hacer un hacer restaurante de acuerdo con la tendencia mundial del comfort food, que propone sabores cálidos y cercanos que hacen sentir bien, y plasmar en su carta las añoranzas de casa. Y es así, que mientras pensaban en cómo darle una temática especial a su proyecto, una milanesa apareció en la mesa para ser compartida durante la reunión de trabajo. Ernesto improvisó algunos acompañamientos que complementaran el clásico empanizado. Del hambre surgió la inspiración, y también el concepto que estaban buscando. Ernesto improvised some accompaniments that complemented the classic breaded dish. Inspiration came from hunger, and also the idea they were looking for.

In August 2014, La Verdad de la Milanesa (LVDLM) opened its doors to the public, albeit partially, since in this first stage the business operated behind closed doors and only serving customers who exchanged a password for a reservation they had to request through their social networks. This marketing strategy quickly paid off and after four months the doors of their first shop opened up in Barranco. Then, restaurants in Surco, Miraflores and, most recently, in Mega Plaza Shopping Center would follow.
En agosto de 2014, La Verdad de la Milanesa (LVDLM) abrió sus puertas al público, aunque de manera parcial, ya que en esta primera etapa atendían a puerta cerrada y solamente a los clientes que intercambiaban una contraseña por una reserva que tenían que pedir a través de sus redes sociales. Esta estrategia de marketing dio rápidamente sus frutos y luego de cuatro meses las puertas de su primer local se abrieron definitivamente en Barranco. A ese le seguirían restaurantes en Surco, Miraflores y, el más reciente, en el Centro Comercial MegaPlaza. La dinámica de tres pasos a la hora de pedir es una de las características del restaurante. En un primer paso se elige de qué será la milanesa. Existen cuatro alternativas: pollo, res, pescado y berenjena, para los que prefieren una opción vegetariana; a esas opciones se sumará, pronto, una nueva milanesa de carne de cerdo. El segundo paso es escoger una de las 23 salsas posibles, que se vertirán sobre la milanesa. La variedad es enorme y para todos los gustos: desde una clásica “napolitana” con jamón y mozzarella, hasta una “huancaína” con queso fresco y polvo de aceituna. Entre las salsas más elaboradas (que en la carta se denominan “las top”), se cuentan la contundente “parrillera” con salsa BBQ , chorizo, frankfurter, mozzarella y chimichurri, y “la nona”, con jamón ahumado, albahaca, mozzarella y fondue de tomate. El tercer y último paso consiste en elegir el acompañamiento de la milanesa: aquí hay 16 diferentes opciones, pero la más pedida es, sin lugar a duda, la “pasta pesto” con el clásico sabor del pesto casero de las mesas limeñas. Otras opciones para acompañar son los distintos tipos de papas fritas, purés (de papa o camote), ensaladas o un peruanísimo tacu tacu. La Verdad de la Milanesa también propone un maridaje distinto para acompañar sus platos: una selección de las mejores cervezas artesanales. A esta opción se le sumará muy pronto una selección de vinos chilenos, argentinos y españoles.

The three-step process when ordering is one of the characteristics of the restaurant. In a first step, the type of milanesa is chosen. There are four alternatives: chicken, beef, fish and eggplant, for those who prefer a vegetarian option. To these options, the new pork milanesa will be added soon. The second step is to choose one of the 23 sauces, which will be poured over the milanesa. The variety is huge and for all tastes: from a classic “Napolitan” with ham and mozzarella to a “huancaína” with fresh cheese and olive powder. Among the most elaborated sauces (called “the top sauces” in the menu), there is the satisfying “barbecue sauce” with BBQ sauce, chorizo, frankfurter, mozzarella, and chimichurri, and “la nona”, with smoked ham, basil, mozzarella and tomato fondue. The third and final step is to choose the accompaniment of the milanesa: there are 16 different options, but the most requested one is, undoubtedly, the “pasta pesto” with the classic flavor of homemade pesto from the Lima tables. Other options to accompany are the different types of fried potatos, purées (potato or sweet potato), salads or a Peruvian tacu. La Verdad de la Milanesa also proposes a different pairing to accompany its dishes: a selection of the best craft beers. A selection of Chilean, Argentine, and Spanish wines will be added to this option very soon.

En la frontera entre Perú y Bolivia, a casi cuatro mil metros sobre el nivel del mar, respira el Lago Titicaca, el cuerpo de agua dulce más grande de ambos países. Es conocido mundialmente por ser el lago navegable a mayor altitud, y la leyenda cuenta que de sus aguas nacieron los fundadores del imperio incaico, Manco Cápac y Mama Ocllo. Su importancia es indudable: el efecto termorregulador que produce el agua que alberga suaviza las condiciones de extrema temperatura que se dan normalmente en el altiplano, permitiendo que sus islas y los alrededores sean habitadas por personas y diferentes especies de plantas y animales. La presencia del lago también permite el desarrollo de actividades como la agricultura, ganadería, pesca, y cada vez más, el turismo. Desde los años 70 se empezó a generar espontáneamente el turismo en Taquile, una de las islas del Lago Titicaca. Entonces era visitada por unos pocos curiosos. Ahora, centenares de turistas visitan el lago con el objetivo de pasar un tiempo con las familias locales y aprender y compartir sus costumbres.

On the border between Peru and Bolivia, at almost four thousand meters above sea level, is Lake Titicaca, the largest body of fresh water in both countries. It is known worldwide for being the highest navigable lake, and legend has it that the founders of the Inca empire, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, came out from its waters. Its importance is undoubted: the thermoregulatory effect produced by the water it shelters softens the extreme temperature conditions that normally occur in the Andean plateau, allowing its islands and the surroundings to be inhabited by people and different species of plants and animals. The presence of the lake also allows the development of activities such as agriculture, livestock, fishing, and increasingly, tourism. Since the 70s, tourism began spontaneously in Taquile, one of the islands of Lake Titicaca. In those times, it was visited by a few curious people. Now, hundreds of tourists visit the lake in order to spend time with local families and learn and share their customs.
TURISMO Y COMUNIDAD En la isla Amantaní, donde viven alrededor de 400 personas, Justa nos da la bienvenida en quechua y nos invita a pasar a su casa que guarda el estilo arquitectónico tradicional. Tras sus muros de adobe, tiene todas las comodidades necesarias: su cocina está muy bien equipada, pero aún conserva un pequeño fogón a leña con el que hasta hace unos años preparaba sus alimentos. “Me visitan de muchos países e intercambiamos experiencias: ellos me cuentan de su familia y su trabajo y yo también les cuento cómo empecé con el turismo”, explica Justa. A solo dos horas en bote desde Amantaní, en la península de Chucuito, se encuentra la comunidad vecina de Luquina Chico. Aunque a primera vista parecen similares, la población aquí es aymara, no quechua: la vestimenta, costumbres y cosmovisión son diferentes. Este grupo étnico es reducido en Perú y solo se encuentra en zonas cercanas al Lago Titicaca. En Luquina Chico conocemos a Richar: él se siente muy orgulloso de ser aymara y de su forma de trabajar

en comunidad. Una experiencia que los visitantes pueden experimentar gracias al turismo rural comunitario, trabajando hombro con hombro en la tierra o con el ganado. Cada pueblo y cada isla del Lago Titicaca tiene costumbres propias y pobladores dispuestos a compartirlas.

TOURISM AND COMMUNITY On Amantaní Island, where approximately 400 people live, Justa welcomes us in Quechua and invites us into her home which keeps the traditional architectural style. Behind its adobe walls, she has all the necessary comforts: her kitchen is very well equipped, but it still has a small firewood place in which until a few years ago she prepared her food. “I receive visitors from many countries and we exchange experiences: they tell me about their family and their work and I also tell them how I started in the tourism activity,” explains Justa. Only two hours by boat from Amantaní, on the Chucuito peninsula, is the neighboring community of Luquina Chico. Although they look similar at first glance, the population here is Aymara, not Quechua: the clothing, customs and worldview are different. This is a small ethnic group in Peru only found in areas near Lake Titicaca. We met Richar in Luquina Chico: he feels very proud of being an Aymara and of his way of working in community. This is an experience that visitors can enjoy thanks to rural community tourism, working shoulder to shoulder on the land or with livestock. Each town and island of Lake Titicaca has its own customs and there are settlers willing to share them.

Before going on stage, Alonso Briceño, Luis Buckley, and Paul Schabauer rehearse an energized version of GoGoGo, one of their themes. It is their ritual, their lucky charm, or their superstition. “It helps us to throw out any anxiety, get warmed up, and be aware that the show is about to start,” says Briceño, the group's singer and guitarist.
Antes de salir al escenario, Alonso Briceño, Luis Buckley y Paul Schabauer ensayan entre ellos una versión energizada de GoGoGo, uno de sus temas. Es su ritual, o su cábala, o su superstición. “Nos ayuda a botar cualquier nervio, a calentar motores y a decirnos el show está a punto de empezar”, comenta Briceño, voz cantante de la agrupación y guitarrista. Siempre es necesario subir las revoluciones antes de presentarse, a pesar de que ya tengan más de una centena de conciertos a cuestas. Cuando fueron teloneros de Jack Johnson en Lima, anunciaron al público con emoción que era su presentación número 100. Y regalaron una tocada memorable llena de viajes melódicos y energía. Poco tiempo después se presentaron en el prestigioso festival South By Southwest, en Texas, compartiendo escenario con algunas de las bandas más importantes del planeta. Eso fue una antesala para la pequeña gira por España (por Madrid, Barcelona y Granada) que emprendieron con éxito.
It is always necessary to raise excitement before the show, even though they already have more than a hundred concerts performed. When they opened for Jack Johnson in Lima, they were thrilled to announce to the audience that it was their 100th presentation. And they gave a memorable show full of melodic journey and energy. Shortly after, they performed at the prestigious South by Southwest festival in Texas, sharing the stage with some of the most important bands on the planet. That was a prelude to the small tour of Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, and Granada) that they undertook successfully. It all started with “Found Love”, their mega hit. Alonso Briceño says that when they composed and wrote it, they did not see anything special in it. “At first, I wanted to take it out of the album, somehow it sounded very corny. But after discussing it for a while, we decided to keep it in Violet”, he explains about his first album, which has managed to sell more than five thousand copies. “Months later, I was alone at my place and I heard it. I felt that we had composed a nice song. For a moment, I saw the future of that song and it moved me to tears”, confesses the vocalist. The three members had shared musical passion since they were children. Briceño says that they had always had the support of their parents, who mainly filled their homes with music and gave them musical instruments. They formed different bands, with different musical styles, until they split up due to career preferences and professional obligations. However, since personal

Todo comenzó con “Found Love”, su mega hit. Alonso Briceño comenta que cuando la compusieron y escribieron no le vieron nada especial. “Inicialmente yo la quise sacar del disco, de alguna manera me sonaba muy cursi. Pero luego de conversar durante mucho tiempo decidimos mantenerla en Violet”, explica sobre su primer álbum, que ha logrado vender más de cinco mil copias. “Meses después la escuché solo en mi casa, sentí que habíamos compuesto un lindo tema, por un momento vi el futuro de la canción y me conmovió hasta las lágrimas”, confiesa el vocalista. Los tres integrantes habían compartido pasión musical desde que eran niños. Briceño comenta que siempre tuvieron el apoyo de sus padres, por un lado, que llenaron de música sus hogares y les regalaban instrumentos musicales. Tuvieron diversas bandas, con diferentes estilos musicales, hasta que las vocaciones y obligaciones profesionales los fueron apartando un poco. Sin embargo, con el sentido de compromiso personal que conlleva la madurez, decidieron apostar por contratar al productor David Chang y de ahí nacieron los primeros temas. Dos han sido sus presentaciones más memorables. La primera, y quizás la que más recuerdan, es el concierto con el que abrieron para la banda colombiana de folk pop Morat. “Una fiesta”, describe Briceño. “Mucha gente joven coreando a todo pulmón nuestras canciones”. La segunda fue su sexto concierto en Victoria Bar. “Había espacio para 80 personas y confirmaron 3 mil, fue una locura con mucho feeling”, recuerda el cantante. Hoy, mientras trabajan en nuevas canciones, diferentes portales a nivel hispanoamericano hablan de ellos como la gran revelación. El cronograma de conciertos del 2018 no se hará esperar. Y es que hace falta escucharlos en vivo para entender la energía que trasmiten.

commitment comes with maturity, they decided to hire producer David Chang and hence the first themes were created. They have had two memorable presentations. The first one, and perhaps the one they remember the most, is the concert in which they were the opening band for the Colombian folk pop band Morat. “It was a celebration”, recalls Briceño. “A lot of young people were chanting our songs at the top of their lungs”. The second one was their sixth concert at Victoria Bar. “There was room for eighty people and three thousand confirmed, it was crazy with a lot of feeling”, recalls the singer. Nowadays, as they work on new songs, different Hispanic-American portals speak of them as the great revelation. The 2018 concert schedule will soon follow. It is indeed necessary to be at a live concert to understand the energy they transmit.

Milagros Gonzáles vive en República Dominicana desde el 2010: su hogar está en la ciudad de Bávaro, en la provincia La Altagracia, al este de la isla. Aún recuerda su primera impresión: palmeras, cocos, arena blanca, mar azul, piñas coladas y reggeaton. Todo muy relajado, pero caótico a la vez. Una vida sin el estrés de una gran ciudad, pero con la sensación de que todos están de paso. Para la mayoría, República Dominicana es sinónimo de sus playas, una postal desde el paraíso. Sin embargo, la fotógrafa peruana ha podido viajar por su interior y conocer otras facetas de la isla: la zona de montaña en la provincia La Vega, donde Milagros Gonzáles has been living in the Dominican Republic since 2010: her home is in the city of Bávaro, in the province of La Altagracia, east of the island. She still remembers her first impression: palm trees, coconuts, white sand, blue sea, piña colada and reggaeton. A very relaxing atmosphere but chaotic at the same time. It is a life without the stress of a big city, but with the feeling that everyone is passing through. For most, the Dominican Republic is synonymous with its beaches, a postcard from paradise. However, the Peruvian photographer has been able to travel around and learn about other aspects of the island: the

También ha seguido la vida cotidiana de los pobladores, que transcurre al margen de los turistas y los visitantes. Milagros trabaja como destination wedding photographer, fotografiando a parejas que llegan hasta República Dominicana para casarse, renovar votos o comprometerse. “Este es un lugar rico en historias locales, con personajes únicos, inmersos en lugares de fantasía”, asegura la fotógrafa, cuya mirada se deja influenciar por el sol de la isla.

a bruma matutina en las vertientes occidentales andinas de la Reserva Nacional de Calipuy, en el departamento de La Libertad, nos regala la última población del más amenazado de los cuatro camélidos sudamericanos, el guanaco norteño. Este imponente animal de manto rojizo dorado deja ver su silueta estilizada de hasta 1.80 metros de alzada, ramoneando entre la hierba a la distancia. Con un fuerte balido advierte a su clan de nuestra presencia. Si bien esta especie se encuentra bastante distribuida entre Chile y Argentina, es en Calipuy donde se encuentra el límite norte de su rango de distribución desde La Patagonia. Se estima que alberga la población aislada más grande del Perú, con 400 a 650 ejemplares. Sus características físicas distintas a las de sus parientes del Sur la sitúan como una subespecie única. Sus mayores amenazas son la endogamia por falta de intercambio genético con otras poblaciones, la cacería ilegal por su piel y carne, así como la pérdida de su hábitat. Su pelaje tiene una fibra de excelente calidad siendo más larga que la de su pariente cercano, la vicuña. A diferencia de la llama y la alpaca, el guanaco y la vicuña son especies silvestres no domesticadas por el hombre. El guanaco está clasificado como “en peligro” por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN).

he morning mist in the western Andean slopes of the Calipuy National Reserve, in the Department of La Libertad, gives us the last population of the most threatened of the four South American camelids, the northern guanaco. This magnificent animal with a reddish golden fur reveals its stylized silhouette up to 1.80 meters high, grazing on pasture in the distance. With a loud bleat, the clan is warned of our presence. Although this species is quite distributed between Chile and Argentina, Calipuy is the northern limit of its distribution range from Patagonia. It is estimated that Calipuy houses the largest isolated population in Peru with 400 to 650 individuals. Its physical characteristics which are different from those of its relatives in the South makes it a unique subspecies. Its biggest threats are inbreeding due to lack of genetic exchange with other populations, illegal hunting for their skin and meat, and the loss of their habitat. Its fur is of excellent quality fiber and it is longer than that of its close relative, the vicuña. Unlike the llama and the alpaca, the guanaco and the vicuña are wild species not domesticated by man. The guanaco has been classified as “endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

En el mar de Tumbes y Piura nada el tiburón ballena, un pez que llega a medir 20 metros de longitud y pesar 34 toneladas. Su conservación es todo un reto, y no solo por sus grandes dimensiones. The whale shark, which swims in the sea of Tumbes and Piura, is a fish that can measure up to 20 meters in length and weighs 34 tons. Its conservation is a challenge, and not only because of its large dimensions.
Partimos en bote desde Punta Sal hacia el norte con un objetivo. Habían pasado unos treinta minutos cuando divisamos una gran sombra moviéndose lentamente en el mar. A pesar de que sabía que no había motivo, el miedo invadió mi cuerpo. Con la máscara, el snorkel y las aletas puestas salté al mar, y nadé hasta llegar al lado del pez más grande del mundo.
We left by boat from Punta Sal towards the north with an objective in mind. About thirty minutes had passed when we saw a large shadow moving slowly in the sea. I was overcome by fear even though I knew there was no reason. I put on the mask, snorkel, and fins and jumped into the sea and swam until I reached the side of the largest fish in the world.
En el norte peruano le llaman tintorera y hasta hace poco era temido por los pescadores. En otras partes del mundo es conocido como tiburón ballena y es buscado con entusiasmo por los amantes del buceo. Su gran tamaño -20 metros de largo y 34 toneladas de peso- justifica el miedo de pescadores y de principiantes en el buceo como yo; sin embargo, el tiburón ballena se alimenta exclusivamente de zooplancton, es decir, de animales marinos muy pequeños. A pesar de que puede bucear a una profundidad de casi dos kilómetros, en el mar norteño es posible verlo nadando calmadamente en la superficie.
People in northern Peru call it blue shark and until recently it was feared by fishermen. Known as whale shark in other parts of the world, it is eagerly sought by diving enthusiasts. Its large size -20 meters long and 34 tons of weight- justifies the fear of fishermen and beginner divers like me; however, whale sharks feed exclusively on zooplankton, i.e., very small marine animals. Although it can dive to a depth of almost two kilometers, in the northern sea it is possible to see it swimming calmly on the surface.

Muchos de estos animales han sido cazados alrededor del planeta para satisfacer la demanda china, en donde una sopa de aleta de tiburón es considerada un manjar. Su sobre explotación ocasionó que la especie esté considerada en peligro por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza. Frente a esto, en el 2017 el Ministerio de la Producción

Ya antes, desde el año 2012, la bióloga Rossana Maguiño de la ONG ecOceanica investiga a las poblaciones de tiburón ballena en el norte del país y da a conocer la importancia de su conservación. Actualmente, en colaboración con su colega Adriana González, colocan marcas satélites en las aletas los tiburones para conocer por primera vez su comportamiento migratorio en el Perú. Poco a poco, la visión que tienen los pescadores sobre este enorme pez está cambiando, representando actualmente una oportunidad para desarrollar turismo sostenible. Perú no es el primero en hacerlo:
países como Filipinas, México y Ecuador promueven el nado con tiburón ballena desde hace varios años. El ecoturismo de tiburones puede generar hasta 314 millones de dólares a nivel mundial en un año, creando diez mil puestos de trabajo. Juan Pablo Testino, gerente de la empresa North Shore Peru Expeditions, apuesta por esta actividad. Trabaja en Punta Sal con los pescadores de Cancas organizando tours de nado con el tiburón. “Es muy importante que esta actividad se lleve a cabo de una manera responsable, y que el impacto que genere el turismo en la población de tiburón ballena sea positivo”, enfatiza Juan Pablo. Esperamos que se sigan sumando esfuerzos públicos y privados por investigar y conservar a esta especie, y que su avistamiento sea una fuente de ingresos sostenible para las familias norteñas.

this species was a fantasy. Many of these animals have been hunted around the planet to meet Chinese demand, where a shark fin soup is considered a delicacy. Its overexploitation caused the species to be considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. In view of this, in 2017 the Ministry of Production of Peru banned whale shark fishing. Since 2012, biologist Rossana Maguiño of NGO ecOceanica has been studying the whale shark population in the north of the country and disseminating the importance of its conservation. Currently, in collaboration with her colleague Adriana González, they are placing satellite tags on the fins of sharks to study for the first time their migratory behavior in Peru. Little by little, the fishermen’s perception
on this huge fish is changing, and it is currently offering an opportunity to develop sustainable tourism. Peru is not the first to do so: countries such as the Philippines, Mexico, and Ecuador have been promoting swimming with whale sharks for several years. Shark ecotourism can generate up to 314 million dollars worldwide in a year, generating ten thousand jobs. Juan Pablo Testino, manager of North Shore Peru Expeditions, is committed to this activity. He works in Punta Sal with the fishermen of Cancas organizing swimming tours with sharks. “It is very important to carry out this activity in a responsible manner, and that the impact generated by tourism in the whale shark population is positive,” emphasizes Juan Pablo. We hope that public and private efforts will continue to be added to study and preserve this species, and that its watching will be a sustainable source of income for northern families.
