Periodista de la PUCP, se ha especializado en la producción audiovisual y de eventos, con un trabajo sobre todo ligado al deporte y al outdoors.

Ha seguido la carrera Caminos del Inca nueve veces, así como el Dakar y el Campeonato de Rally Nacional: conoce los caminos del Perú, respeta sus dificultades y aprecia la riqueza de sus paisajes.

Conservation photographer by its very nature, passionate about travel and wildlife. Looking for new experiences he travels around Peru and other spaces, making photographic hunting a way of life. He has published and exhibited his work throughout the world.

He is a communicator specialized in issues related to human development with emphasis on conservation and development in the Peruvian Amazon. His main tool to communicate is photography, from which he tries to connect deep rural environments with urban audiences in Peru and the world. His images have served, among other things, to promote the creation of the Sierra del Divisor National Park.

Audiovisual communicator and photographer from the University of Lima where she works as a professor.

Currently, she also works as a commercial photographer and in personal artistic projects related to identity, memory, and popular art.

LA VERDADERA RIQUEZA A REAL TREASURE Biodiversidad, conservación, ecoturismo. No son solo palabras de moda, pues definen conceptos valiosos que actualmente guían una nueva tendencia de turismo mundial y también una actividad económica nacional más consciente. La edición 15 de Peruvian Magazine propone reflexionar al respecto destacando en su portada a la Reserva Nacional Tambopata, un verdadero refugio de la naturaleza donde se han desarrollado exitosos proyectos de conservación de especies como el otorongo y el guacamayo, convirtiéndola en uno de los lugares de mayor diversidad biológica del planeta. Este honor la hace un preciado destino de estudio científico, pero también una experiencia invaluable para el visitante que quiera entender el verdadero valor de la naturaleza.

Perú tiene la suerte de ser rico en espacios como Tambopata. Y también en historias exitosas de conservación productiva. Es el caso de los cafetaleros de Jaén: familias dedicadas a producir responsablemente, a la sombra de los generosos bosques, uno de los mejores cafés del mundo. Lo hacen pese a las constantes amenazas del cambio climático y de intereses económicos que merman los espacios naturales del país, cambiando un futuro de riqueza por una ganancia momentánea.

La conocida blogger de viajes Maud Gurunlian, escribe sobre ecoturismo desde la perspectiva del viajero, explicando cuánto se gana con una experiencia responsable. Y, finalmente, la monumentalidad de Huayhuash y su promesa de aventura con sus rutas de trekking, nos recuerda hasta qué punto los paisajes de Perú son ese gran privilegio que debemos proteger y compartir.

Biodiversity, preservation and ecotourism. They are not just buzzwords, they define valuable concepts that currently guide a new global tourism trend and also a more conscious national economic activity. The 15th edition of Peruvian Magazine aims to highlight this matter on its cover the Tambopata National Reserve, a true refuge of nature where successful conservation projects of species such as the otorongo and the macaw have been developed, making it one of the places of greater biological diversity of the planet. This honor makes it a precious destination for scientific study, but also an invaluable experience for the visitor who wants to understand the true value of nature.

Peru is a country with rich areas such as Tambopata.

And also in successful stories of productive conservation. This is the case of the coffee farmers of Jaén: families engaged in producing responsibly, in the shade of the generous forests, one of the best coffees in the world. They do so in spite of the constant threats of climate change and economic interests that diminish the natural spaces of the country, changing a future of wealth for a momentary profit.

The well-known travel blogger Maud Gurunlian writes about ecotourism from the perspective of the traveler, explaining how much is earned with a responsible experience. And, finally, the monumentality of Huayhuash and its promise of adventure with its trekking routes, reminds us to what extent the landscapes of Peru are a great privilege that we must protect and share.

Perú es protagonista del libro editado por Laia Libros Barcelona a pedido de la empresa española Gas Natural Fenosa, que durante 14 años consecutivos saca un libro anual en formato de coffee table book, para regalar a sus clientes a nivel mundial. “Perú. Patrimonio Cultural y Natural” repasa la cuna de civilizaciones milenarias, la relación con el mar de la costa, el urbanismo prehispánico, y otros temas relacionados al patrimonio material e inmaterial peruano. El fotógrafo nacional Michael Tweddle -columnista de Peruvian Magazine- estuvo a cargo de la curaduría y autoría fotográfica principal del libro. Participaron los autores de renombre Walter Alva, Eduardo Bedoya Garland, Soledad Mujica, Fernando Roca, Jaime Mariazza, K. Makowski y Regulo Franco. El libro avalado por la UNESCO se presentó en España en diciembre de 2017 y ya ha sido traducido a seis idiomas.

Peru is the main theme of the book published by Laia Libros Barcelona at the request of the Spanish company Gas Natural Fenosa, which for 14 consecutive years has published an annual coffee table book format to give to its customers worldwide. “Peru. Cultural and Natural Heritage” reviews the cradle of ancient civilizations, the relationship with the sea on the coast, pre-Hispanic urban development, and other issues related to the Peruvian tangible and intangible heritage.

National photographer Michael Tweddle, Columnist of Peruvian Magazine, was in charge of the curatorship and main photographic authorship of the book. Renowned authors Walter Alva, Eduardo Bedoya Garland, Soledad Mujica, Fernando Roca, Jaime Mariazza, K. Makowski and Regulo Franco participated. The book, endorsed

by UNESCO, was presented in Spain in December 2017 and has already been translated into six languages.

PASEOS PEATONALES DE SAN ISIDRO PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS OF SAN ISIDRO Agradecimiento: Municipalidad de San Isidro / Acknowledgement: San Isidro Municipality Como parte de las actividades paralelas que se realizaron en el marco de la Feria Internacional de Arte de Lima, ART LIMA 2018, a mediados de abril se inauguraron diez pasos peatonales intervenidos con la obra del artista venezolano Carlos Cruz-Diez en San Isidro, bajo el nombre de “Color Aditivo Lima”. La obra fue plasmada por alumnos de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Perú, y durante seis meses el arte óptimo de Cruz-Diez será parte del día a día de los transeúntes de una de las zonas más transitadas del principal centro financiero y económico de la capital.

El artista venezolano de 94 años de edad reside en París desde 1960 y es uno de los principales representantes del arte óptico y cinético a nivel mundial. Su obra se ha expuesto en museos como el MoMA de Nueva York, el Tate Modern de Londres y el Museo de Arte Moderno de París, entre otros.

The 94-year-old Venezuelan artist has lived in Paris since 1960 and is one of the leading representatives of optical and kinetic art worldwide. His work has been exhibited in museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, among others.

De este modo, Lima se suma a las ciudades intervenidas con obras del artista venezolano.

Perú tiene hermosas rutas para principiantes (Lomas de Lachay, Huancaya), pero también tiene otras que por su exigencia podrían resultar demasiado para una primera experiencia. Lo importante es que disfrutes cada momento.

03 Invertir en ropa “inteligente”: es ligera (la puedes empacar y cargar con facilidad pues no ocupa mucho espacio ni pesa), te mantiene caliente cuando hace frío y fresco si hace calor. Además, te protege del sol (tiene protección UV).

La palabra “ecoturismo” se escucha cada vez más en el Perú y a todos nos gusta, ¿pero sabemos realmente qué significa? En una pequeña definición lo podemos resumir como el tipo de turismo que busca ser responsable con la naturaleza y las comunidades locales. El turismo donde la prioridad no es el viajero ni generar más plata, lo más importante es no dejar huella. Pero como eso es casi imposible porque, aunque no lo crean nuestras pisadas marcan la diferencia en los ecosistemas, la idea es dejar la huella más chiquita posible. ¡Que nuestra presencia en ese lugar sea casi invisible! Esto suena imposible, pero cada vez hay más información y más destinos que nos ayuda a acercarnos al eco turismo.

Uno de los personajes más misteriosos y terroríficos de la mitología peruana, y una leyenda que sigue viva y vigente en el imaginario colectivo de la Amazonía.

One of the most mysterious and terrifying characters in Peruvian mythology and a legend that is still alive and active in the collective imagination of the Amazon.

La frondosa inmensidad de la selva peruana, que alberga a una vasta infinidad de animales, plantas, ríos, árboles y parajes con las imágenes extraordinarias, parece de por sí sacada de una ficción.

No es de extrañarse que sea también escenario de numerosas leyendas, mitos y misterios que intentan explicar, desde tiempos milenarios, los hechos que ocurren en medio de la oscuridad y complejidad de su vegetación.

Uno de los personajes más conocidos y que ha sido protagonista de historias inexplicables es, sin lugar a dudas, el Chullachaqui, un ser siniestro. Algunos dicen que es un enano, otros que es un demonio; su nombre proviene de los términos quechuas “Chulla” (disímil) y "Chaqui (pie), llamado así pues tiene una pierna de hombre y la otra de cabra. Según la leyenda, esta extraña criatura tiene la habilidad de adoptar la imagen de personas conocidas para engañar a sus víctimas y atraer su atención: al seguirlo,

se pierden en lo más espeso y profundo de la selva. Identificar al Chullachaqui no es complicado, pues la particular disimilitud de sus pies y las huellas que deja a su paso lo delatan con facilidad.

De ser sorprendida, la criatura no tendrá más remedio que huir y esconderse.

El miedo a lo desconocido suele ser padre de las más extrañas historias. La Amazonía es tierra fértil en todo sentido, también en leyendas y mitos. Pero en este caso, se dice que existen testigos, quienes aseguran haber estado realizando actividades cotidianas en el bosque cuando se encontraron con esta mítica criatura. Algunos aseguran que existen registros de niños y adultos perdidos que han sido encontrados, luego de varios días o inclusive semanas, en completo estado de abandono y totalmente ajenos a la realidad.

No puede saberse si fue el Chullachaqui o fue, simplemente, la realidad de la selva, cuyo verde laberinto hay que saber respetar.

Its name comes from the Quechua words “Chulla” (dissimilar) and “Chaqui” (foot), because it has one human leg and one goat leg. According to the legend, this strange creature has the ability to adopt the image of familiar people to deceive

Identifying the Chullachaqui is not complicated, since the particular dissimilarity of its feet and the traces left in its path easily give it away. EL SECRETO DE SU RIQUEZA Uno de los proyectos de conservación emblemáticos dentro de la Reserva Nacional Tambopata es el “Proyecto Guacamayo”.

A fines de los años ochenta un grupo de investigadores estableció lo que hoy es el Centro de Investigación Tambopata, con el objetivo principal de estudiar la ecología reproductiva de los guacamayos del área. Con el tiempo, el proyecto creció y hoy el centro es un lodge administrado por Rainforest Expeditions que es visitado por turistas que pasan horas observando a las coloridas aves posadas sobre las paredes de arcillas.

Al norte del país, en la región de Cajamarca está ubicada una de las principales zonas cafetaleras del país: un lugar privilegiado por su geografía, su clima y su gente, donde crece uno de los mejores cafés del mundo.

Aunque muchos no lo saben, el café en nuestro país es una industria que mueve cerca de 800 millones de dólares al año sólo en ventas al exterior, lo que nos coloca en el sexto puesto del ranking mundial de exportación. De un total aproximado de 258 mil toneladas de café verde producidas anualmente en Perú, poco menos de la mitad provienen de Jaén.

Ubicada en la parte baja de región Cajamarca, Jaén es la tierra prometida para los agricultores, pues en sus campos se produce de todo y bien; uno de sus cultivos estrella es el café, pues su geografía y su clima hacen que de forma natural, las condiciones sean óptimas para su desarrollo. El café en Jaén, al igual que en el resto del Perú, se produce principalmente en pequeñas fincas familiares que no tienen más de unas cuantas hectáreas de extensión. Si esta dinámica pudiera traducirse en una imagen, sería como una lluvia de granos que uno a uno se juntan bajando por las laderas de las montañas, cruzando ríos, para llegar hasta el mar. Los agricultores en Jaén realizan la cosecha selectiva –sólo usan granos maduros y sin imperfecciones-, e implementan carpas para mantener los granos de café a salvo de la lluvia mientras se secan.

It is said that the best coffee is produced between 800 and 2000 meters above sea level, however, as the weather changes, these parameters also do so. Otra alternativa para conocer un más es visitar la Quinta San Antonio en el distrito de San Ignacio (a dos horas de la ciudad de Jaén en auto), donde Manuel Ignacio Arias, reconocido cafetalero de la zona, hace tours por su parcela, mientras que su mujer prepara comida regional deliciosa. Incluso se puede pasar la noche en una de sus habitaciones.

But not all is lost. Although climate change will definitely affect the "normal" conditions under which coffee has been produced, the important thing is that there are measures that can be taken to mitigate and adapt to these effects. Many of these measures do not require large investments, but knowledge and advice: to make better water management along the productive chain, or the realization of pruning and fumigation to avoid the proliferation of fungi and other parasites that tend to increase in warmer and wetter climates.

Fortunately, Jaen is already working to face this challenge and ensure that in the future this land continues to produce one of the best coffees in the world.

CAFÉ Y CLIMA Existe una relación compleja entre café y clima, precisamente porque la planta del café produce su mejor grano bajo parámetros climatológicos bastante especiales, como la cantidad de humedad y horas de luz que reciben las plantas, y estos factores normalmente están determinados por la altura sobre el nivel del mar. Actualmente el cambio climático está proyectando una sombra sobre el futuro de este cultivo y de las familias que dependen de él. Se dice que el mejor café se produce entre los 800 y los 2000 msnm, sin embargo, a medida que el clima cambia, estos parámetros también lo hacen. Lo que en la práctica significa que el café está subiendo de altura y muchas zonas que hoy son aptas, están quedando por debajo del límite.

Pero no todo está perdido. Si bien el cambio del clima afectará definitivamente las condiciones “normales” bajo las cuales se ha venido produciendo café, lo importante es que existen medidas que se pueden tomar para mitigar y adaptarse a estos efectos. Muchas de estas medidas no requieren grandes inversiones, pero sí conocimiento y asesoría: hacer un mejor manejo del agua a lo largo de la cadena productiva, o la realización de podas y fumigaciones para evitar la proliferación de hongos y otros parásitos que suelen incrementarse en climas más cálidos y húmedos.

Felizmente en Jaén ya se está trabajando para hacer frente a este reto y asegurar que en el futuro esta tierra siga produciendo uno de los mejores cafés del mundo.

Despite being so impressive, the Huayhuash mountain range is one of the most fragile ecosystems in Peru: actually, it was unprotected until 2002, when it was declared a Reserved Zone by the Peruvian government. Las alternativas para caminatas son muchísimas y con la construcción de las nuevas carreteras el acceso es cada vez más fácil. La mayoría de rutas guiadas de trekking que se realizan en Huayhuash duran entre diez y doce días para completar el circuito. El punto de partida es la cuidad de Huaraz. Dependiendo de la ruta que se tome se puede llegar hasta los 5000 m.s.n.m. de altura, por lo que es vital estar bien aclimatado para la caminata, ya que se enfrenta varios días cargando con mochila, carpa, accesorios y alimentos.

Debido a estas exigencias es muy importante revisar la temporada en la que se realizará la actividad, pues la lluvia puede hacer que la experiencia sea aún más difícil de lo que ya es, por eso se recomienda aventurarse entre los meses de mayo y setiembre que es donde las lluvias son menos intensas. Además, en temporada seca es más fácil orientarse, ya que los caminos están mejor marcados y la posibilidad de perderse es mucho menor. Adentrarse en las complejidades de Huayhuash es un esforzado reto que vale la pena emprender. Además, nada importante es fácil.

The alternatives for hiking are many and access is increasingly easy due to the construction of new roads. Most of the guided trekking routes that are offered in Huayhuash have been planned to take between ten and twelve days to complete the circuit. The starting point is the city of Huaraz. Depending on the route taken, up to 5000 meters high can be reached; therefore, it is important to be well acclimated for the hike because of the several days spent carrying a backpack, tent, accessories, and food. Due to these requirements, it is very important to review the season in which the activity will take place, since rainfall can make the experience even more difficult than it already is. This is why it is recommended to venture between May and September as rainfall is less intense.

Furthermore, during the dry season it is easier to find your way, since the roads are clearly marked and there is a low possibility of getting lost. Going into the complexities of Huayhuash is a challenge that is worth undertaking. Moreover, all things that are important are never easy to accomplish.

Este verano la fotógrafa Andrea Gianella cumplió treinta años y quiso celebrarlo en un destino lejano y exótico. Planeó un viaje al sureste asiático que incluyó a Siem Reap en Cambodia: la ciudad de los templos camboyanos que siempre le habían fascinado. Descubrió Siem Reap como un pueblo tranquilo, con espíritu rural y con algunas zonas llenas de hoteles masivos. La zona de Angkor, donde se encuentran todos los templos, está inmersa en la selva camboyana, “lo cual fue simplemente hermoso”, recuerda Andrea.

This summer, photographer Andrea Gianella turned thirty and wanted to celebrate in a distant and exotic destination. She planned a trip to Southeast Asia that included Siem Reap in Cambodia: the city of Cambodian temples that had always fascinated her. She found out that Siem Reap was a quiet town, with a rural spirit and with some areas full of massive hotels. The area of Angkor, where all the temples are located, is immersed in the Cambodian jungle, “which was simply beautiful”, recalls Andrea.

The National Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the anniversary with several concerts in the Grand National Theatre of Peru, amongst other activities.

This year, the Lima cultural scene began with a free concert. In February, the Los Incas auditorium at the Ministry of Culture's headquarters offered the opportunity to hear works by Leonard Bernstein, Johann Strauss II, Sergei Rachmaninov, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, among others, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra. Thus began the 2018 season of the orchestra with the longest trajectory in Peru. An important year, since it is 80 years since its foundation. The National Symphony Orchestra prepares to celebrate them with activities such as 18 concerts in the Grand National Theatre of Peru, decentralized concerts, publications by record companies, and national tours.

Este año, la escena cultural limeña empezó con un concierto gratuito. En febrero, el auditorio Los Incas de la sede central del Ministerio de Cultura dio la oportunidad de escuchar obras de Leonard Bernstein, Johann Strauss II, Sergéi Rachmaninov y Nikolái Rimsky-Korsakov, entre otros, interpretadas por la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional. Inició así la temporada 2018 de la orquesta de mayor trayectoria en el Perú. Un año importante, ya que se cumplen 80 años de su fundación. La OSN se dispone a celebrarlos con actividades tales como 18 conciertos en el Gran Teatro Nacional, conciertos descentralizados, publicaciones discográficas y giras nacionales.

La orquesta fue creada el 11 de agosto de 1938 con la misión de llevar, a través de sus conciertos de temporada, la mejor selección de un repertorio universal –obras clásicas, latinoamericanas o peruanas- al público nacional, conocedor o no. Antes de

The orchestra was created on August 11, 1938 with the mission of bringing, through its seasonal concerts, the best selection of a universal repertoire-classic works, Latin American or Peruvian-to the national public, specialized and non-specialized. Before its existence, an orchestral group of professionals and amateurs were performing in the city, founded in 1907, directed by Federico Gerdes and sponsored by the Sociedad Filarmónica de Lima. The desire of a national professional group was materialized with the official presentation of the National Symphony Orchestra on December 11, 1938 at the Municipal Theater of Lima under the baton of Viennese musician Theo Buchwald, and with the presence of President Óscar R. Benavides, authorities and main personalities of the cultural world and the society of the moment.

Since then, the National Symphony Orchestra went through several experiences. The decades of the forties and fifties were marked by the presence of European musicians and distinguished guests.

In successive years, it had among its directors personalities such as Luis Herrera de la Fuente (considered one of the most important Latin American musicians of the twentieth century) and Carmen Moral (the first woman to occupy such a position in an orchestra in Latin America). Currently, under the baton of its main director, Fernando Valcárcel, the National Symphony Orchestra con-

su existencia, sonaba en la ciudad un conjunto orquestal de profesionales y aficionados, fundado en 1907, dirigido por Federico Gerdes y auspiciado por la Sociedad Filarmónica de Lima. Las ansias de una agrupación profesional nacional se concretaron con la presentación oficial de la OSN el 11 de diciembre de 1938 en el Teatro Municipal de Lima bajo la batuta del músico vienés Theo Buchwald, y con presencia del presidente Óscar R. Benavides, autoridades y principales personajes del mundo cultural y de la sociedad del momento.

Desde entonces, la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional vivió varios momentos. Las décadas del cuarenta y cincuenta estuvieron marcadas por la presencia de músicos europeos y de eminentes invitados; en años sucesivos tuvo entre sus directores a personalidades como Luis Herrera de la Fuente (considerado como uno de los más importantes músicos latinoamericanos del siglo XX) y Carmen Moral (la primera mujer en ocupar dicho cargo en una orquesta en Latinoamérica). Actualmente, bajo la batuta de su director titular, Fernando Valcárcel, la OSN continúa en la tarea de acercar su repertorio a un público cada vez más amplio.

Prueba de ello es el concierto que ofreció en abril pasado junto a Bareto y Manuelcha Prado en el Parque de la Exposición de Lima, reuniendo a más de cuatro mil personas. Y las actividades recién comienzan. La temporada 2018 de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional es de celebración y memoria.

Los Andes Tropicales del departamento de Amazonas fueron alguna vez cuna de la cultura Chachapoyas y albergan además una importante concentración de biodiversidad. Entre el follaje de los árboles destaca el intenso color naranja rojizo del enérgico y bullicioso gallito de las rocas, brincando de rama en rama, desplegando su colorido plumaje entre bailes competitivos para conquistar a alguna hembra de color marrón rojizo apagado. El "tunqui", como también se le conoce localmente al gallito de las rocas, es el ave nacional del Perú. Además de su colorido destaca su cresta de plumas erguidas como una media luna sobre el pico.

Se alimenta principalmente de frutos e insectos siendo considerada como especie clave en la dispersión de semillas en el bosque.

Habita en la vertiente oriental de los Andes Tropicales desde Venezuela hasta Bolivia entre los 500 a 2,300 metros, prefiriendo zonas encañonadas y húmedas. Por su belleza es perseguida por sus plumas y como aves de exhibición y mascotas por el trafico ilegal de fauna silvestre.

La selva alta, esa mágica porción geográfica que se desarrolla entre los Andes peruanos y la selva amazónica, cuenta entre sus provincias con una de paisajes especialmente hermosos, amplia variedad de flora y fauna, pisos agrícolas generosos y una particular diversidad cultural. Oxapampa, en el departamento de Pasco, destaca también por albergar un gran número de colonos austro-alemanes quienes llegaron a estas tierras desde mediados del siglo XIX y lograron perfeccionar las técnicas de cultivo, el cruce genético de plantas y animales, y el desarrollo de la industria maderera, una de las principales fuentes de ingresos para los pobladores de la zona.

Es en este especial escenario, entre ríos y bosques de pino, que se esconde Altares de Oxapampa Ecolodge. Situado en el Parque Privado Quebrada de San Luis, su propuesta es ofrecer a sus huéspedes algo más que un lugar dónde pasar la noche, darles una experiencia única de conexión con la naturaleza pero con todas las comodidades. Incrustadas en medio del colorido de la selva aparecen las siete cabañas (para cuatro, cinco o seis personas) y la casa principal, un club house, además de una piscina.
