Cover Photo
The medical device mold featured on the front cover was designed and manufactured by Westminster Tool, Inc., Plainfield, CT, and represents one of the most challenging, high-risk projects the company has ever tackled in its 25-year history. What separated this mold from all other complex jobs was the amount of dedicated research and creative thought processes that went into its perfect execution. The end product, a micro-fluidic medical device, required several technical features that proved nearly impossible to machine with traditional approaches. The tool included complex angled slides, multi-cam action shutoffs and a micro-fluidic feature that proved to be the most challenging aspect of all. The Westminster Tool team tried EDM, laser cutting and multiple other methods to get the miniscule fluid path just right. With an extremely small end mill and high-precision polishing, the Westminster team was able to hit the tight-tolerance requirements of the micro-fluidic feature while also meeting stringent surface finish requirements.

CUT COST & INCREASE TOOL LIFE WITH DYNA-BLUE® , DYNA-BRITE™ & DYNA-GLOSS™
The most cost effective way to cut mold/tool cost is to increase tool life.
DYNA-BLUE® & DYNA-BRITE'" are both low temperature Ferritic Nitrocarburizing processes that produce a hard 75+HRC compound zone diffused into the steel supported by a Nitrogen rich diffusion zone which increases wear resistance 2-10 times over nitriding and other coatings. We also offer DYNA-GLOSS to maintain gloss levels on textured tools and DYNA-BRITE to maintain high finishes on Lens/Lighting Molds and provides better release.
