We are in desperate need for volunteers to run the beach games on the 4th of July. The games begin right after the hot dog lunch. Past games include sandcastle contest, tug-o-war, water balloon toss, and noodle races. Please consider volunteering to run
one or all the games. Contact Megan Clay mbwild12@gmail.com if you or someone you know is interested.
Food Trucks
We will once again be hosting a weekly food truck at the beach every Wednesday throughout the summer from 5pm-8pm. We decided to schedule on the same day of the week for consistency. You will receive a reminder that morning with the truck information. This will also be available on the Club calendar. Trucks are subject to change depending on the weather. The Sherwood Lake Club Board of Directors decided to move the Accounting Function from “In-House” to SSC CPAs & Advisors due to safety concerns and the difficulty in hiring a part time accountant. The transition will be over the next three months with SSC working with John Wendling, Jessica Likos and Jo Hunt. I mis-calculated the time restraints for Shanna Zimmer having three young children and a full-time accounting position with The Sunflower Foundation…the part-time job was too much. Thanks go to Jessica for stepping up the last two months filling the position and working through the transition with SSC.
The Sherwood Lake Club Board of Directors voted to engage United Engineering Group to complete a Feasibility Study on re-cycling water back into Lake Sherwood when the water level is low. This water will have been treated and is better than what is flowing into the lake currently. This study should be complete by August 15, 2024.
The Kansas Water Resource Department has approved the Sherwood construction plans for meeting the State’s requirements. This plan and formal request for FEMA Funds have been submitted to FEMA for consideration. We are hoping to hear from FEMA early in the Fall of 2024.
Boating Season is upon us now and I hope you will refresh yourselves with the restrictions, rules, and boat safety. The Sherwood Lake Patrol is on duty to help in any way possible. Please respect others and their property, but yet---have fun!
Thank you.
Tom McBride
Please welcome Jessica Likos as our SLC Office Secretary!
Jessica and her husband Chris moved to Topeka from Alabama in 2020. They live on Dancaster Road with their children Lanie (12) and Mason (9). When Jessica is not busy with her kid’s numerous sports, she enjoys reading and relaxing by the lake with her family.
Jessica graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. She has 10 years’ experience in accounting and administrative functions. Her husband Chris is in production management at Goodyear.
Hello, the weather is getting warmer, and members are putting their watercraft back on the lake. The lake patrol has registration stickers and the forms to sign for the Aquatic pledge for zebra mussels. The Sherwood website has a link for boater safety course and quiz which is required for watercraft operation. Our main concern is boater safety, downed skiers, and swimmers. Members, please review the Boating and swimming rules on the Sherwood website.
Launching your vessel: Contact Lake Patrol if they are not at the beach they can return to help you. Safety/ Courtesy-Patrol will do an annual safety inspection. Please have a USCG-approved fire extinguisher and an appropriate number of life jackets. If you are a skier, be sure to have a Skier Down Flag.
Make sure you wear all the required life jackets. Please obey no wake buoys and the rules they represent. Swimming is only allowed behind the white buoys. The lake patrol will continue to enforce all rules of the lake.
Lake Patrol personnel are Travis Hirt and Kyler Gronewaller.
New hours of the Lake Safety/Courtesy Patrol.
1. Monday-Friday 7:00am to 2:30pm Staff are On Call only. If you need to launch your boat during this time or need assistance, please call (785.221.2628) and someone will meet you at the ramp.
2. Monday-Friday 2:30pm to 10:00pm the patrol will be at the beach
3. Saturday-Sunday 7:00am to 10:00pm the patrol will be there all day.
I performed my first lake water sampling with the assistance of Randy McAlister. We took samples from the Beach, Chelmsford cove, Aylesbury cove, and Blue Inn Cove. The samples were secured and shipped to Midwest Labs in Nebraska. We are currently waiting for the results.
Rule reminders:
1. All boats and personal watercraft must be registered with SLC numbers displayed on the hull.
2. If you are Wake Surfing, please review rules and regulations and you must turn before the green buoy.
3. Please use the lake in a counterclockwise direction. The speed limit is 35mph.
4. All skiers and passengers must have a CGA personal flotation device.
5. Please display the ORANGE or RED FLAG while a skier or tuber is still in the water. Once they are back up put the flag away.
6. NO WAKE ZONES the tall white cylinder buoys and orange ball shaped buoys. Most importantly swimmers may be in the water behind the white buoys. Damage to the shoreline could occur.
7. The entire lake is a No Wake Zone from dusk to dawn when the red light is on at the end of the dam.
I appreciated all the help on spring clean-up day. Members raked sand at the beach and put up the net. Members spread mulch vacuumed leaves with tractor and blew leaves out of bushes. Horseshoe pits were taken apart and reconstructed. They are being moved to the east of the patio for access. Members interested in helping move pits contact the lake Manager after Memorial Day. All the windows were cleaned inside and out. The drains at the beach were cleaned from sand and debris and beach was dragged to redistribute sand and smooth the sand out.
The beach hut was painted, but not finished. The doors have rust which needs repaired then painted. The 6 beams will get wrapped with metal. Any member interested in helping please contact the Lake Manager (785-221-3248).
The marina has updated electrical work done by Jeff Clay, Travis Hirt, and Eric. We spent a week running new electrical wiring, installing new outlets and poles with waterproof boxes and some new breakers and GFIs. Every slip now has power. I will be removing extension cords that are attached to the docks for safety reasons.
Members, please remember to review the website quick links to help answer any questions you may have. If you have problems with login, please email office@sherwoodlakeclub.org or Manager@ sherwoodlakeclub.org for assistance.
I hope to meet more members this summer.

You know I’m always here with Good Neighbor service. But I’m also here with surprisingly great rates for everyone. Call me for a quote to see how much you can save. You might be surprised.
Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.®
Dick and Judy Edington have been residents of Lake Sherwood for forty years. They purchased their home, known as the Pizza Hut house because of its unique appearance, at 6760 SW Aylesbury Road from Carol Ring Broughton. The original home was built in the late 60’s and experienced a fire in the 70’s that destroyed the entire top story. The fire happened on Christmas Day and was due to wrapping paper that traveled up through the fireplace flue and onto the roof. Because Lake Sherwood was so rural at the time, it took the fire department a long time to arrive. The home was rebuilt without the top floor.
Meanwhile, the Edingtons were both teaching school and coaching various sports in Olathe, KS. In fact, Dick coached a high school swimming team in Olathe that won the State Championship in 1980. When a major career change beckoned them to Topeka, they purchased a beer distributorship, named it Edington Distributors, and ran it for ten years before selling it. During this time, Judy taught 3rd and 4th grades at Wanamaker Elementary and retired in 2004, having taught for 39 years. After the beer distributorship sold, Dick taught Social Studies, Physical Education and coached football, basketball and track in the schools that served Eskridge, Dover and Harveyville. He retired for good in 2005. They have one daughter, Eimee, who served as Lake Patrol for some time, and one granddaughter, Sloan.
Dick served on the Sherwood Lake Club Board for two terms, which included five years as president. During his Board tenure, it was decided to gate and fence the beach for safety purposes as it was being used for parties and activities after hours by non-members. The Edingtons favorite activities have included the 4th of July dance which featured a live local band at the beach and the Tennis Club which was extremely active. Dick and Judy remember the enforcement of strict rules regarding sizes and heights of homes, structural additions, and yard maintenance and upkeep. The Edingtons still enjoy their membership in The Sailing Club and being the consummate competitors that they are, they especially love the annual Treasure Hunt. They have served hotdogs at the beach every 4th of July since they have lived here.
And finally, we all owe a huge shout out and thank you to the Edingtons. For over 20 years, in the early morning hours, rain or shine, you will find them walking around the south side of the lake picking up trash. They have returned purses, mail, packages and other items of personal importance to our neighbors. They have seven different routes that they rotate through. The only thing that keeps them away from their mission is ice and a very rare vacation. They are appreciative and complimentary of our members who take pride in their homes and lawns and who don’t mow yard waste and leaves into our streets.
Judy is 82 years old and Dick will be 85 in July. They have certainly seen many changes through the years at Lake Sherwood. They are especially pleased to witness second and third generations of our original founders choosing to live here, raise their precious families and call Lake Sherwood HOME!

We had race #1 the next day, and Bob Meinzer won the traveling Charlie Hoch 1st Race Winner Memorial Award on a very windy day. Excellent race, Bob.

• Fertilize only if a soil test indicates it is needed and in accordance with your product’s recommendations to avoid over-fertilization which can be harmful to your turf and our ecosystem.
• When purchasing plants for your garden, say NO to plants treated with neonicotinoids pesticides to avoid harm to our pollinators. Incorporate flowering trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals into your garden. Try to have something blooming during the entire growing season to feed pollinators. Consider plants such as milkweed for monarch butterflies and beebalm, Echinacea, snap dragon, hostas and colorful wildflowers for bees.
• Exercise EXTREME caution and care before applying pesticides, paying special attention to time of day, blooming patterns and type of poison used. Organic doesn’t necessarily mean safe to pollinators.
• For a healthier lawn, return your glass clippings to your turf as you mow. Avoid blowing grass clippings and yard debris into the lake, street or gutters.
• If you observe clogged drains or debris entering the lake near drainage basins or pipes, please notify Board Member, Paul Feist.
• We appreciate your continued efforts to keep our lake free of zebra mussels. Zebra mussels are excellent hitchhikers. Please don’t allow lake access to any unregistered kayaks, canoes or other watercraft. Clean and quarantine all equipment such as skis, boards or lily pads that have been used on other lakes.
THANK YOU!
The first water sampling for the current season occurred on May 16, 2024. The samples indicate that the lake is overall healthy. The lake’s clarity is very good to excellent with the exception of the West End cove. Elevated microcystins are again noted and remain a concern. Ongoing monitoring of both water quality through sampling and visual inspection for harmful algal blooms is necessary. Microcystins are produced by blue-green algae and associated with harmful algal blooms. Harmful algal blooms can cause death in dogs coming in contact with the toxins produced and trigger human illness as well. If the lake receives beneficial amounts of precipitation periodically during the summer this will mitigate the risk of harmful algal blooms. Providing aeration to the stagnant layers can reduce the potential for harmful algal blooms and may require consideration at some point in the future.
Microbiologic studies do not show any significant amount of E. coli or fecal coliforms though detection thresholds were reached at all sites except the Beach. The West End site will require ongoing monitoring. There is very little risk to members currently engaging in water recreation although swimming in the West End cove should be undertaken with caution due to the presence of E. coli and Fecal Coliforms.
The following creel, possession and slot limits shall apply to all fishing on Lake Sherwood.
Individuals that violate these limits shall be suspended from all Lake Club Privileges for one (1) year from date of violation, in addition to “Penalties” as may be determined under the Sherwood Lake Club Rules and Regulations which may be amended or updated from time to time.
