THE MOOG Hungary’s most popular alternative rock band. Formed in Budapest in 2004 by then-teenagers Tonyo Szabo (vocals), Adi Bajor (guitar) and Gergo Dorozsmai (drums), and later joined by Csaba Szabo (bass) and Miguel Gyorgy (second guitar), they’ve been compared to such modern-day chart-toppers as The Strokes and The Hives; but The Moog’s influences run deep and wide: The Beatles, David Bowie, The Sonics, The Smiths, Nirvana, Ramones, Sonic Youth, Roxy Music and Bauhaus. These and other seminal bands come to mind upon hearing their two releases: 2007’s Sold for Tomorrow, and the upcoming Razzmatazz Orfeum. Yet, THE MOOG manages to infuse their music with their own personality and heritage, and the resulting sound is brightly original, fusing together elements of 60’s garage music, goth rock, punk, and pop. Under the influence of American and British rock, they write and sing in English but their sound is distinctively Eastern European, as heard in their immediate, contagious and haunting melodies. INTERVIEW WITH TONYO SZABO. by ANDRÉS CASSANO & MARCELO BASAURE - His second album titles Razzmatazz Orfeum. What can you tell us about this new disc? - This album is a darker but still a dancer record compared to our previous one. We tried to mix together some of our 80's dark influences with the disco beat and with the atmosphere of the Hungarian turning of the century. The turning of the century feel is emphasized in the title too since orfeum(not orpheum) was a specific Austro-Hungarian venue where all kind of artists could gather and perform from actors through musicians till even acrobats. Even though all this sounds a bit bizarre this album is still rather a pop-rock album but we hope that not in an ordinary way. - What influences has the group both to musical level and to aesthetic level? - As I've already mentioned we were influenced by 80's dark music and post punk too but our musical influences are pretty wide. I listen to 60's pop and some movie scores too. For instance I'm a huge fan of Ennio Morricone and Henry Mancini too. In the aesthetic level this album is mainly influenced by the turning of the century. This could be thanked to many reasons. My major was art history and one of my favourite period in art is Art Nouveau or rather it's Austro-Hungarian version called Secession. The other reason is that I think the turning of the century was similar to our time in many ways. The people at that time had similar fears, expectations and tensions like the people of today. Maybe this could be told about every generation which experienced a turning of a century but the resemblance with the one a hundred years ago is pretty obvious to me. The vampiric themes come to our music from that influence too. The only reason why I mention this because we don't want anything in common with the hype of the Twilight films saga. - In that you sew do you inspire to write the songs of the group? Inspiration could come from many directions. I can't and don't even want to find one proper thing that I always get an inspiration to write a song. The songs, (continues on page 58) 54
bands and albums differ only because the inspirations differ I think. - You are from Hungary, what do you think about European rock scene?level and to aesthetic level? - I can't really speak for other European countries other than Hungary. Even though we toured Spain, Germany and played a few shows in England and France the only scene we can really talk about is the Hungarian one. Here there are only a few bands which are trying to have an international career and sing in English. Anyhow some of these bands I find great and we're great friends with them. For instance E.Z. Basic, and Jacked could be superstars if they had the chance to put out their music to other markets too. I think the same about Hangmรกs too even though they mix English lyrics with Hungarian. Other than these bands there are some good Hungarian bands who sing in Hungarian too of course but the music that they play could be enjoyed mainly by the Hungarian audience of course. - How would you define THE MOOG? We're like a couple who always fight but still love each other. I think this tension comes through our music too. We have some really good hooks and choruses but if you listen to our songs there's always a tense
104
feeling which makes the whole thing a bit special. - Which are your projects? Now we're playing some Hungarian festivals, then we1ll tour Germany sometimes in the fall and hopefully after that we can record our third album which is gonna be a bit shorter record, compared to our previous ones, but we aim for a bigger impact. - Finally, Suggest a book, a disc and a movie. Book: Kundera - Immortality. This is the best book that I read in the last 2 years or maybe in my whole life. Disc: The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Blood And Fire. The new album of the most underrated band of the 2000’s Movie: The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen - original title). This is a German movie that I saw in the cinema when it came out and recently in TV too. 3 or 4 years have passed since I first saw it and now I like it way better than the first time. Maybe you have to be a bit more mature to feel how refined and still shocking this movie is. Even though this is supposed to be an “art movie, I think no one would find it boring. The intense tension of this film can touch everyone I'm sure.

STOCKHOLM. If you ask someone who has visited Stockholm the first word they would probably use to describe it is “beautiful” and that it is. Stockholm is a major international city with great shopping, quality eateries in abundance, fabulous standard hotels, an internationally renowned club and music scene and a vibrant cultural life. Where Stockholm comes into its own however is its sheer, natural beauty. Stockholm, as a city, is over 700 years old and spreads across 14 islands as it faces proudly out to the Baltic Sea. You can get to just about all of Stockholm’s many wondrous sites on foot, which is the perfect way to see the city. You can also take a boat trip that will give you a different facet of Scandinavia’s largest and probably most beautiful city. To qualify the natural “beauty” of Stockholm, try a summer morning stroll in Djurgården, a dip in Lake Mälaren from Norrmälarstrand, or a quiet moment to yourself in Hagaparken. We think you’ll know what we mean.

STOCKHOLM NEVER SLEEPS. Very few cities offer nightlife on a par with Stockholm’s - a scene that really lives, seven nights a week, year in, year out. In this respect, Stockholm has very little competition from anywhere north of Paris and London. The various Stockholm districts abound in meeting places – pubs, cafés and club- style restaurants with different profiles depending on age and musical preference. Particularly in Södermalm, but also in Vasastan and Kungsholmen, you’ll find the nightlife is trendier, more youthful and bohemian, with a constantly changing selection of clubs for every taste. However, most of the larger establishments are located in the precinct around Kungsträdgården, Berzelii Park, Stureplan and the city centre – a large area that is packed with nightlife, especially at weekends. Café Opera, Riche, StureCompagniet, White Room, Plaza, LaRoy, Spy Bar and Solidaritet are just a handful of the largest and best known of these clubs – the list could be made much longer. And if partying until 3 am isn’t enough to satisfy your tastes, relax. Many of the big clubs don’t close until 05.00. Live music is another area in which Stockholm has gained a worldwide reputation. Throughout the year, live performances by Swedish and international artists, from classical and jazz to hip hop, electro and death metal, are given at music clubs such as Berns, Nalen, Fasching, Mosebacke and Debaser, as well as at a variety of other larger and smaller venues.

SÖDERMALM. Södermalm will bewitch you with its mix of fashion, design, new and second-hand clothes and accessories and general ‘hey, chill out’ attitude. Come here to see the future of shopping, which is eco and organic products. Check out Ekovaruhuset, in the Old Town, offering clothes, shoes and accessories. Also look out for the Nudie Jeans and Cheap Monday jeans brands. If you want to purchase goods that won’t ping your conscience here is the place to come. Here you’ll find the products of the new elite of Swedish fashion in the area known locally as ‘SoFo’ – south of Folkkungagatan. There are shops, galleries, cafés, restaurants, bar and eateries in abundance and you should look our for ‘Beyond Retro’ for quality second hand clothing, ‘Brunogallerian’ and Götgatan 21, both on Götgatan.

In summer, the Archipelago is a paradise for sailors and other boaters from all over northern Europe, but it’s also accessible to visitors travelling by public transport. An hour by bus, local train or car will take you to any of several island communities, and from there you can continue by boat into the magical, breathtakingly beautiful islescape. The best option, however, is to depart from central Stockholm on one of the classic white ferries many of which are from the 19th and early 20th centuries and still in operation – making the journey an unforgettable experience in itself. Across the entire span of the archipelago, a distance of more than 100 kilometres from north to south, visitors can choose from an excellent selection of restaurants and accommodation – from exclusive hotels and inns to simple but comfortable youth hostels and camping grounds. Many of the larger hotels and inns are also open in winter, when the scenery is every bit as spectacular as it is in the summer. It’s also possible to travel by boat from Nybroviken or Blasieholmskajen in central Stockholm and enjoy a traditional Swedish Christmas buffet on board, or indeed at one of the many restaurants in the archipelago – an unforgettable mid-winter experience.

In true New Yorker style, this special loft with refined spaces has really stylish features without leaving tastefulness and comfort aside.
The recycling of this centenarian chocolate factory gave rise to the creation of these lofts: a full block consisting of ten thousand meters designed for an absolutely interesting project known as Tronador. This building has lofts laid out in four stories where the last two are duplex apartments. These lofts have a huge balcony furnished with a grill, a twelve-guest table, and a small outdoor garden. Besides, they have four bedrooms, three bathrooms and other rooms. The outside view is gorgeous since there are no tall buildings in the surrounding area; the units are bright, safe and spacious. Two paintings dominate the living room, for the considerable size of such works of art a double-height room turned out to be essential. The portrait of the English singer David Bowie created applying a metal powder technique is really striking. For the decoration of this parlor, the decorator chose comfortable and large pieces of furniture, such as the four-part sofas, the Sixties armchairs and the Italian style lamps. In this room the light streams in through

the curtains of four meters long or longer; the same happens in the dining room where a hardwood table with eight strong chairs were placed in the middle of all the whiteness. The kitchen plays an important role, it keeps working the whole day since not only meals but also all kind of schedules are prepared there. This room is of large proportions and connects directly to the service area in such a way that it is close at hand. The kitchen opens onto a spacious balcony that includes a grill and a dining room, ideal to enjoy during summer season. At the end, a private living room with a Jacuzzi dominates the balcony. On the first story one may find in suite rooms, a studio, and a bookcase that faces the living room and has an independent staircase. The results are unquestionable. The lofts feature neutral rooms with a clear view; they are comfortable, elegant and warm. just as propietary had dreamed for him.
