NEPAL. Despite the fatigue, I woke up early. From the window a dense and scattered town unfolded before my eyes, and little by little was covered with a brown veil, till get confused, in the distance, with the earth. Earth that beyond, tried to reach the sky, in a zigzag way, and almost succeeded. A solid and powerful mountain contained the city, like a hug. A hug so strong that ended waking me up. I took it as a welcome.

Some men went hand in hand, others were embracing loving and innocent, and together, in small groups, launched a myriad of looks like a swarm of harmless knives, which shook to any traveler. Were black and intense eyes. Occasionally their smiles bright as flashes of simplicity, and get them completely undressed. I assumed that we shared the same wonder, for being different, and i walked relaxed, with my body alive.

The sun was burning furiously the skin, and inflamed with rage, the colors of the women involved in a bunch of overlapping fabrics. Amazed with the endless combinations, I walked with dirty feet of an orange ground, stained of the place now. It felt comfortable, familiar, almost ancestral.

Some took refuge from the siesta sun under the arches, others just let their eyes appear from the dark depths of the houses or stores or barbers wide open. The rest appreciated in the temples, which abounded, as their gods and religions, and also give cool shade. I stopped at one. Breathe a rich and loving air. Then came rites, My dry mouth took me out of the prayers and peace. multicolor trance, and looking for a little water, I found a fruit stand, very fresh to the view, of all shapes and colors. An orange juice sweetened my Katmandu, Nepal. enthusiasm, and recovered, I followed. May 2007 69

COFFEE WITH SYMPATHY. by JEREMY HUNTER

I am not evil,” said Lucifer. “I just do my job. Just like everyone else.” He was sitting at sidewalk table of a cafe on Bermuda Lane, stirring sugar into his cappuchino. His eyes were hidden behind his sunglasses as he gazed down the street. “A lot of people would argue otherwise Luc,” George suggested. He glanced down at his watch. It would be time to open the bar down the street soon. He wasn't sure why Lucifer had stopped him and offered to buy his coffee. He was relieved to find out Lucifer just wanted someone to talk to. “Of course they would,” Lucifer replied calmly. “They want to blame their own wickedness on someone else. But evil lives in the hearts of men.” “And you've never had a hand in any of the terrible things that people have done over the years?” George cocked an eyebrow at Lucifer and sipped his coffee. “Hmmm...” Lucifer smiled a thin smile. “Well now... That's what gets to me sometimes. Whenever men talk about a serial killer they say 'he's got the devil in him.' Or if someone gets caught embezzling money or cheating on their wife they say 'the devil made me do it.' I don't make anyone do anything. I give people choices. It is their decision what actions they take.” He paused and sighed. “You know... I've tempted and tested messiahs, saints, saviors, all varieties of heroes. Some who have become gods and inspired millions of people to have better lives. And no one ever credits me for making these champions so divine. But if I did not challenge them they would never have become so great. Without the trials I set before them they would never achieve such magnificent feats. No, they only want to blame me when something dreadful happens.” Sounds like you need some help to clean up your image,” said George. He knew that when

people needed someone to talk to they also wanted to draw their own conclusions in a conversation. He had learned this much from years of bar tending. “After several thousands of years, I don't think there is much hope for that. I know I do my job well. That is what matters.” Lucifer took a drink of his cappuchino and licked the foam from his lips. “You enjoy what you do. I think you have to admit. Don't act like I haven't seen you in action at the bar.” George folded his arms over his chest and gave Lucifer a knowing look. The devil chuckled and took off his sunglasses. His bright blue eyes almost glowed, they were reminiscent of stars. “Yes,” he said “ I have to admit that do.” He stared back at George, his voice sounded amused yet his face was emotionless. George felt a cold chill run through his body as Lucifer's eyes beamed in his direction. It was at this moment that George decided he would go open the bar. He had known Lucifer long enough not to be scared of him, but every now and then he still made George feel uncomfortable. “Well... I should get going. I'll see you at the bar tonight?” asked George as he got up to leave. “Yes, yes of course. Don't let me keep you.” answered Lucifer, his eyes again drifted aimlessly down the street. The sun was setting, sky was orange-pink and the street had a chrome yellow glow. “Thanks for the coffee,” said George and he turned to walk away. Lucifer didn't respond. He just gazed down the street at nothing in particular. A thousand temptations and trials ran through his mind. One of his eyes squinted slightly with the faintest trace of melancholy. He blinked and it was gone.
