IS TROPICAL. INTERVIEW BY THE GOLDEN SOULS CLUB thegoldensoulsclub.tumblr.com 56
57
58
Is Tropical is a band from London with three talented male artists (Simon, Gary & Dom) who together create the perfect blend. The band says it feels a deep connection with the continent rather than the island. They recently launched ‘Native to’, a new album whose songs are united by rock tunes and stories filled with magic and energy.

IINTERVIEW WITH IS TROPICAL. written by THE GOLDEN SOULS CLUB. photos by TOM BEARD.
- Where did you meet? - Gary and Simon knew each other from back in the day in Bournemouth / Southampton. Moved to London and met Dom through a mutual friend a few years ago. We all had a shared background in art and started making music together in a squat in Elephant & Castle, South London, early 2009. Now we're based between Stoke Newington and Bow. - Why did you choose the name “Is Tropical? - It was a bit of an escapist idea. We wanted the name to not have a direct meaning attached to it - tropical was just a nice abstract concept that seemed at odds with our everyday reality. It's also good that the name sounds plucked from the middle of a sentence or story - a name that doesn't suggest a concrete identity was useful and descriptive because we wanted to make varied, changeable music. - How do you compose your songs? - Mostly at home on computers. Any time we are around instruments, we come up with lots of little ideas - we also record from TV, ambient instruments and use shitty mics to put things into demos. Unlikely sources or uses for instruments have become important to us. We like the idea of making something sound quite weird / different. This inappropriate synthesis of sound as well as accidents and bad translations are like little symbolic M&Ms that you find on the floor and keep you interested in what sounds good in music. [continues on page 63] 60
61
62
[from page 60] - What influences your songs? - A lot of different stuff. Wikipedia pages about really random things... Books and films, art, TV, trying to rip off other massive songs. We like combining different things or maybe playing a song in a way that wouldn't be obvious the first time. Games like Broken Sword and Megaman and films by Jim Jarmusch... the music of Tom Waits to Kraftwerk to Wu Tang Clan... mythology or bits of history... chinese whispers and strange things you see abroad and even complete fantasy... little pieces of everything that gets absorbed by our overactive brains. Variety is the spice of life, right?
just a gesture away from a frontman/pin-up culture in what was supposed to be genuine/alternative music. We didn't want to be a band that pouts at the camera or uses some weird constructed front to sell the music. Better to have no face at all. Now, putting the mask on before we play is a part of the process - its easier to put your head down and put your attention into playing a really energetic show when you know people aren't staring at your perfectly chiselled jawline. - What do you feel when you are playing live? - We're 100% zen and we acheive 600% rises in Gamma wave activity in our brains. Sometimes, without realising it we undergo time dilation and our consciousness slows down time. Also, we have our monitors so loud that most of the time we are actually hovering above the ground on a cushion of sub bass. This almost superhuman state of readiness and absolute wisdom is only broken when someone makes a mistake and breaks that mutual concentration - you can be in the middle of what's supposed to be a climactic part of a song and you're both pissing yourselves laughing. Then you look over and someone else is still in the zone hovering away and you realize what's happened.
- How would you define your music? - Pop music foremost, with a tendency to rougher / more distorted sounds. Bass driven, heavy drums, frenetic but pretty. We want to make music that everyone could listen to at one time or another. - What are your aspirations as a band? - I think we just want to see as much of the world as we can and earn enough money to maybe make a couple more records. To have your music on a film soundtrack would be awesome. If it was a good film. Like the Beavis and Butthead film or a film where Ross Kemp foils a bank robbery. - What does it mean to your band to sign with KitsunĂŠ? - I think we were excited to sign with KitsunĂŠ because the independent route seemed the most attractive to us. We didn't necessarily want to be treated as something to be moulded or shaped. We had strong ideas about our aesthetic, we do our own artwork and we wanted the opportunity to be creative in all aspects. Obviously this is sometimes hard with a label but the people at KitsunĂŠ are conscious of the importance of being creative on your own terms.
- Describe three dreams that you have for your band. - Playing a gig in an ice fortress; releasing a couple albums and people actually really liking them; supporting The Strokes in Madison Square Gardens. - Describe, in your opinion, the importance of laughing? - Somewhere between gravity and sandwiches. - Name your favorite book, movie, and CD album. - The Master and Margarita; Salvador(1986); Black Lace's Greatest Ever Party Album.
- Why do you cover your faces when you play live? - That ritual has taken on more meaning since we started doing it. I think it began as 63

HOW DID I DISCOVERED THIS PLACE? Step one, falling in love and travelling to Athens to make it real. (?) Step two, disapointing your lover and being send off to Crete to clear your mind. And saying all that via text message. Step three, following my impulses and taking the first boat in my life!
hidding in secret squares…Every little thing inspires you to make your fantasies of romance come true. Running as fast as the wind, kissing in tiny streets full of rose blossoms and keep running to the lighthouse to see how the sun says goodbye hidding behind a little island in front of the city, and leaving the stars keeping an eye on you at night.
Once you are there you just have two options to get to the village, bus or taxi. Either it's expensive, so just take one of them and enjoy your "welcome trip to the island"
People say that Santorini is the 5th best sunset in the world. Χανιά (Chaniá) must be the 6th one. And this, convined with my love next to me again was like being high! Then you can choose a quiet plan in the centre drinking amazing cocktails or go crazy in the beach clubs like Villa Mercedes (commercial house) or Mylo's (electronic and live music), Every club has, of course, his own part of beach, so you can go there in the morning and enjoy another magnificent sunrise, a drunk sunrise with shoes and skinny jeans as I did with my baby. Every little step become an experience. Every experience become a picture, and every picture become a memory that makes you smile everytime you think about it.
I was lucky to live with greek people, enjoying hidden places and paradisiac beaches (the most beautiful are far away from the city, but's worth the trip!) Every corner has it's own magic; the walls, the traditional restaurants, the kind people you may not know this but cretans are renowned for their hospitality) , the mandidades and also in the annoying turistic shops that make the streets crowded. Then the night attempts to come, and it's one of the biggest shows in the island as the sky turns red as blood and with it does the sea.
And this is how the magic in Χανιά works, and this is how love stories not always have a sad ending.
Walking by the port and the old city is like being in the movie "Perfume: The story of a murderer". Flowers on the streets, fountains
