ello and welcome to this issue of Pet Junction. Thank you for picking up your copy of Pet Junction, we very much appreciate it and we are happy to have you along for the ride! We have got some major changes to tell you about so let’s get right down to it. First, Pet Junction will no longer be published two times per year as it has for the past six years. From this point forward, we will be focusing our efforts on providing a multi platform product that keeps you up to date day and night on all things pets. Myself and Jackie have been publishing for quite some time now (17 years) and we have come to understand the need for evolution in the publishing business. Have we been reluctant? Yes. While change is always difficult and challenging...it is also neccessary. To grow either as a person or a business, changing with the times is vital. So here’s the plan and quite frankly, we need your help to make it work. While many people believe that print is in decline, we do not. Infact, statistically print has expanded in recent years. People enjoy print as a medium as do we, so we have no plans to discontinue the print edition of Pet Junction. What we are heavily implementing into the equation are two things; our website and a new mobile app that will launch at the end of May. The print edition of Pet Junction will be published once per year in the spring, but the website and mobile app will be updated constantly with new articles, businesses, products, events, rescues,

pictures and a few other suprises along the way! Here’s where you come in. If you love print, you need to let your pet service provider know that you love print. Potty Training Your Bird In 72 Hours
P
arrots in the wild develop a habit of defecating in certain areas and under certain conditions as a matter of survival. We know most breeding hens will sit on eggs all night long without leaving the nest and defecating. We know parrots that are territorial during their breeding cycle, tend to sun conures defecate at the perimeter of their territory, and know that most pet parrots do not defecate at night. This is why we usually see a great big poop in the morning. We can assume, from this information, that birds have a conscious and subconscious awareness of where they defecate. By observing the innate behaviors exhibited by parrots in the wild, we can understand their needs and modify their behavior to allow them to fit into their domestic home. A parrot that is not potty trained will not make a good pet on a long-term basis. Anyone who owns a parrot is delinquent if they have not
taken the few hours necessary to educate their pet, and no tame parrot is too old to learn.
A tame, weaned parrot can be taught to understand the concept of defecating at specific times and under specific circumstances. This concept of defecating on command can usually be developed in as little as 72 hours. There are only 3 easy steps: Pay attention. The age and feeding habits of your pet will determine when it will need to have a bowel movement. Babies consuming formula will defecate as often as every 20 minutes around the clock. Older birds will vary from 30 minutes, to as long as eight or more hours. Watch your pet for a while and determine the frequency of bowel movements. Take into account the time of day and if your

bird has eaten recently. Leave your pet in the cage or on a perch and watch for a bowel movement. When this occurs, you should give a verbal praise and immediately remove the bird from the cage or perch, which is usually the greatest reward you can give a bird. This praise should be in the form of a word, which you will use to command the pet to defecate when you need him to. At HARTMAN AVIARY we say “Good Potty”. At this early stage, your pet will have no idea what you are trying to do. Be patient and your efforts will soon reap great rewards. Since you now have an idea of how long it will be before the next bowel movement, you can prevent an accident by putting the bird back into the cage or on the perch when one half of the expected time has passed. Now you will wait for your pet to go potty and repeat step 2. If you follow this method on a consistent basis, within 72 hours some birds will be trying to go potty every time he sees you enter the room. (Because he wants to get out of the cage.) Soon he may be trying to go again even if he has nothing to pass. Once the bird has a grasp on the concept, you may start using this command to encourage your pet to defecate on command under most any circumstance. This training, so far, will not teach your pet to have the bowel control. He will not know to wait until you give the potty command. It will only teach him to go on command. Once your pet understands you want him to go potty on command you can begin working on teaching the concept of holding it until appropriate. This bowel control behavior will take much longer to teach. When you notice your bird squatting and lifting his tail to defecate, say “No”, and if possible, try to hold his tail down to stop the process. Now move him to an appropriate location and give the potty

command. Stay with him until he goes, then praise and reward him when he finally does. If he has already defecated, do nothing. Just clean it up and plan to be ready the next time. It is important not to startle the bird when trying to change this behavior. He is not intending to make a mistake. By positively encouraging appropriate behavior, he will not need the old behavior. For a young bird, just like a human, bowel control may not be available until your baby is a year or more old. When an accident does occur and you did not catch it as it happened, do not reprimand him. In as little as a few seconds after defecation, your pet will probably be thinking about something else. If he is now thinking about how nice it would be to snuggle up to your neck and you tell him no, or punish him, he will be confused. It is very important not to punish your bird for making a mistake until he totally understands the behavior you want him to perform. You will just confuse him and prolong the learning process. Always use positive reinforcement by praising the behavior you want to reinforce. The most important concept for you to understand: when your pet poops on the couch or on your friend, you MADE your pet do it! By not teaching a parrot when and where it is appropriate to defecate, you are teaching him that it is acceptable to go anywhere. Beware; there are a few ignorant people who will tell you that potty training your parrot is a bad idea because he may hold it until he dies. This has never happened. ven though they are carnivores, cats seem to like a bit of greenery in their diets. Most cat owners are aware of their pets’ propensity for eating grass or houseplants. Cats in the wild usually eat their herbivorous prey’s intestines first and seem to get their “green fix” from this. No one is exactly sure WHY these normally carnivorous creatures eat greenery but, there are several theories. Some researchers think that cats have a need for certain enzymes and/or nutrients, found in greenery or that greens

form some sort of a “stomach-cleanser” with the plant fiber helping the cats’ digestion process, promoting the passage of hairballs, either through stools or vomiting. Others think that some cats simply like the taste/texture of crispy crunchy green leaves and stems. One will see grass-eating more often in outdoor cats, as they have more opportunities. Therefore, if you have outdoor cats, it is important to be careful when using fertilizers, weed and pest control products on your lawn as these can prove extremely toxic to cats. any available greenery as well. With many common houseplants being toxic, it’s important to screen the plants in your home. Avoid keeping plants that are a potential risk and make sure you offer your cat a suitable alternative to munch on.

Adopting a Shelter or Rescue Dog & Making It Work
T
here are always a wide variety of dog breeds in every size, shape, and color available at the animal shelter. And there are, unfortunately, new dogs arriving on a daily basis. If you take the time to choose a pound pup, and take the time to train and socialize him, it can be a truly rewarding experience. Generally speaking, what you see in a dog at the shelter is what you will get. A dog that is shy and skittish will be just as hard to deal with as one that tries to be the boss. Since dogs are pack animals, the way they behave when lined up in cages is their way of behaving in the pack. It is important that you get them to a quieter area so that you can gauge their behavior away from the pack. Talk to someone who works at the shelter about the dog. Just like with people, looking into the eyes of a dog can reveal a lot about his true nature.
Look for a dog that likes to play, especially fetch, as this is a good, positive sign that he will like to work. Dogs that are cautious and stand-offish are not good candidates, whereas those who approach to interact have guard dog potential. When you meet the dog, every family member should come along. He may be fine with you, but if he shows aggression to another family member, he should not be adopted by your family. ONCE YOU GET YOU NEW DOG HOME Set up an area in your home that will be safe for your dog and your property. The easiest way to manage this is with a crate or cage. Dogs that have spent any time in a shelter will now be well used to spending time in a confined area, so this should make for a pretty easy transition. Using a crate will actually help you when

it comes to potty training your new dog. Any time you have him outside the crate in the first few months, make sure you supervise all of his movements. Forget about the age, size, or breed of the dog, the only thing that should reduce the amount of supervision time is behavior. When it comes to feeding, you should start off by doing it in the crate, even when you are home. The same rules apply for set crating times. If the dog believes that he is only crated when no-one is home, he can quickly develop separation anxiety. It doesn’t matter of you adopt an older dog, treat him like a puppy and only begin to develop real trust when he behaves in an appropriate manner. Your home is your castle, and it should not be destroyed by an unruly rescue dog. Regardless of age, the process of potty training your dog should always be the same. He should be taken outside with the leash on, while you use voice command to encourage him to eliminate, followed by praise for appropriate behavior. There is no set amount of time you need to commit to the potty training process, as it can be weeks or months, depending on the dog. Another good idea for rescue dog training is obedience classes. This is a good idea for a number of different reasons: it allows you to build a bond with the dog, helps him to socialize with other dogs and people, and helps reinforce the basics of good behavior. He will also learn that he has to listen and obey even when there are distractions all around. It is important that you do not make excuses for his behavior. If he is shy around others, it likely has nothing to do with coming from an abusive home. It is

more likely that he is that way because there was a lack of socialization in his past. To continually blame is behavior on abuse from a previous owner does nothing to correct the behavior that he is displaying. If he is nervous around guests in your home, give the guest a treat to give to your dog every time they meet. This may help rectify the situation. Lingering on the past will do nothing to create a better future for you and your dog. If you were not able to speak with the vet at the shelter, your first appointment after bringing your dog home should be to visit your local vet. The dog should be given a complete physical before being established in your home. The vet will use a stool sample to check for intestinal parasites, and will also be on the lookout for heartworm, assuming the dog is old enough. The shelter should give you the vaccination history for your dog. The vet will check that and make sure your dog is up to date with his shots. INTRODUCING YOUR NEW DOG TO OTHER PETS If you have other pets at home, you will want to get an idea of how the dog will react when you are doing the pre-adoption evaluation. There will be plenty of other pets in the shelter, so ask the worker handling your case to bring in another cat or dog to the meeting area, just to get an idea of how your new dog will react. You might also ask if you can bring your own pet in for a meet and greet, but not all animal shelters allow this to happen. If, during these meeting, you see that the dog does not interact well with the type of

Keep in mind, though, that a dog that is aggressive towards other animals may always stay that way. Even if it appears that your new dog is happy and comfortable around other animals, you will still need to supervise the goings on inside your home for a while. Make sure that you have a controlled setting when introductions are made. Your new dog should remain on leash, and your existing pets should be in a crate or carrier. There is every chance you will get scratched, clawed, or even bitten if you do not have these controls in place. Hackles may be raised, but this may be a normal sign in friendly meetings. Keep dogs on a leash and give them a little leeway, but don’t be afraid to pull them away if things go south. If a fight does erupt, DO NOT get your hand anywhere in between the dogs when pulling them apart. Throw a blanket over the dogs, or get a chair in between them. As you may have already guessed, it’s best that there is someone in control of each animal as opposed to you trying to do all of this alone. The new dog should never be left at home alone with your existing pets until they have shown that they can behave appropriately, which may take weeks or even months. If you are in a position where supervision is not possible, make sure that the new dog remains crated. This does not mean hiding him away, though, as you can leave the crate in an area that allows our existing pets to come and have a look or a sniff, although you

should supervise when they do. Your existing pets may antagonize the new dog, which could cause him to lunge, snap, or growl. Taking time to plan, prepare, and train increases your odds of getting a shelter dog that becomes a beloved member of your family. QUICK CHECKLIST FOR ADOPTIONS • ALWAYS go with your head over your heart when adopting. • Make sure that your adopted dog will be a good fit in your new home, which means getting along with every other animal or human that lives there. • Take time to research different breeds. • Think about the reasons WHY you want a dog, and specifically WHY you want a rescue dog. Your goal should be to have an adoption that works. Do you want a dog that will laze with you on the couch, or do you want an active dog that will play and go with your on long walks? • Understanding what it is YOU want will help you choose the type of dog that best suits your specific situation. It may be that a puppy is a better fit than a mature dog, or vice versa. • DON’T adopt a dog and believe that you can change his nature. You need to be able to work with what you get, as wholesale nature changes just don’t happen. The only way to create any kind of behavior change is with a huge investment (time and money) in training. • DO NOT think that this is something that needs to be done alone. 10 TIPS FOR HOTEL STAYS WITH YOUR PETS 1. Be sure the hotel’s pet policy allows you to leave pets unattended, and take note of any limitations on the length of time pets may be alone. 2. Do not leave your pets alone until they’ve acclimated to the hotel room. Taking your dog to a place he doesn’t recognize and promptly leaving him is a sure-fire way to induce a panic attack. 3. If the hotel offers the option, consider upgrading to a two-room suite. 4. Keep the time you’re away as short as possible. Go downstairs for something to eat, run errands to places that don’t allow pets, or attend a quick meeting – but when you’re finished, get back to your pup as quickly as possible. 5. Bigger isn’t always better. Every town has their “name brand” shelter – the one everybody recognizes. What people may not realize is that there are also dozens of small local rescues working just as hard if not harder to save the lives of animals. Many of these rescues are self-funded and are saving hundreds of animals a year. A large portion of rescues will take dogs on the euthanasia list from local shelters and foster them until they find a permanent home. Foster-based rescues also have the added benefit of the dog being socialized in a home versus picking up behavior issues and potentially aggression associated with long periods of time living in a kennel in a shelter.
